Apple-licious: The Best Cider Tours Here and Abroad

apple and cider

Real apple cider isn’t the sickly-sweet stuff you buy in six-packs. And it’s not the juice sold in jugs at the grocery store in October. Real cider is a revelation: an effervescent, lively and snappy drink that can be sweet or dry. Some artisan varieties taste like champagne, and some are closer to beer, but all are worth exploring. Here are a few of the best cider tours in the U.S., England and France.

The Best U.S. Cider Tours

A one-day Virginia cider tour will take you from Richmond to the rolling hills of Piedmont country. We’ll begin right here in the capital city, where Allianz Global Assistance has its U.S. headquarters. Richmond is home to Blue Bee Cider , an urban cidery in Scott's Addition that makes dry ciders from rare and heirloom Virginia apples. Also located in Scott's Addition,  Buskey Cider , which occupies a former train car-loading building in an industrial-chic part of the city. Then head west on I-64 to Castle Hill Cider in Keswick, Virginia, a beautiful estate dating to 1764 that makes sophisticated ciders. Taste the Celestial and the Terrestrial; we can’t pick a favorite. Drive just a bit further to visit Albemarle CiderWorks , a friendly, family-owned orchard and cidery. Stay the night at Albemarle’s guest cottage, or head to nearby Charlottesville.

Another region famed for its apples — and its cider — is upstate New York. Cideries abound in the Finger Lakes and the Hudson Valley regions. When you’re planning your New York cider tour, seek out places that are off the beaten track. As New York Times travel writer Freda Moon notes, “there seems to be something of an inverse correlation between an orchard’s status as a tourist attraction and the quality of its drink.” 1 Standouts include Hudson Valley Farmhouse Cider , which uses European techniques and ecological farming, and Aaron Burr Cidery , which specializes in making cider from wild apples. If you’d prefer to stay in the city, you can taste local ciders at more than 60 locations during Cider Week NYC .

Jumping from East Coast to West, Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is another place to find phenomenal cider. Try the Olympic Peninsula Cider Route , a beautiful drive that carries you past stunning views of Discovery Bay. Begin at Alpenfire , the state’s first organic cidery, where you can tour the orchard and take home some cider vinegar, too. Continue to Eaglemount , which also makes wine, and then to Finnriver Cidery , where you might catch a bluegrass or funk concert on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons.

The Best British Cider Tours

The Brits have been making cider for more than two millennia, giving them plenty of time to perfect the art. 2 Cider has enjoyed a revival in Britain in recent years, and you’ll find popular varieties like Strongbow and Blackthorn in many pubs. But cider aficionados should venture to small farms and cideries in order to taste the real stuff: cloudy and uncarbonated in the West Country, lighter and fizzier in East Anglia. While England’s home to hundreds of cideries, here are just a few to consider adding to your British cider tour:

  • The Somerset Cider Brandy Company ’s picturesque farm has been pressing cider for 150 years. Sample the cider and some 20-year-old brandy, and if you’re not knocked out, climb Burrow Hill for a glimpse of the distant Glastonbury Tor.
  • Perry’s Cider invites visitors to enjoy Somerset cider varieties in its tasting room. Then visit the tea room, cider works and the small museum of cider-making equipment.
  • Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm makes cider with a 16th-century press, as well as wine, spirits and its signature cloudy lemonade. Don’t miss the family’s collection of vintage Healey sports cars.

The Best French Cider Tours

If American and British ciders are too tame for your palate, head to France for the famous Normandy cider tour: La Route Du Cidre . The region is known for three types of apple-derived alcohol: cidre , which can be dry ( brut ) or sweet ( demi-sec ); Calvados, a super-strong aged apple brandy; and Pommeau, a mixture of Calvados and apple juice. 3

The 25-mile cider route through Normandy can be explored at leisure. One favorite stop is Domaine Dupont , a family estate that offers free distillery and cellar visits all year round. Calvados Pierre Huet is a distillery operated by the fifth generation of Huets and operating with modern, sustainable methods. Splurge on a bottle of Calvados Millesime 1972 , which is aged 38 years or more. En route, you’ll also see postcard-perfect towns, marvels like the Bayeux and Rouen Cathedrals, and historic D-Day sites.

Already dreaming of embarking on your cider tour? Whether you’re traveling stateside or internationally, it always makes sense to insure your trip with trip insurance from Allianz Global Assistance. There’s a plan for every budget to protect you from all kinds of travel emergencies, from lost luggage to missed ships to injuries abroad. Travel happy!

Richmond-based travel writer Muriel Barrett has a terrible sense of direction, and has spent many happy hours getting lost in Barcelona, Venice and Jerusalem. Her favorite travel memories all involve wildlife: watching sea turtles nest in Costa Rica, kayaking with seals in Vancouver and meeting a pink tarantula in Martinique.

cider tours

Take a self-guided tour of the Mill's production area in the Cider Gallery on the second level. The Gallery houses the exhibit Power, Process and Popularity that depicts the entire process, portraying the unique equipment that powers the Mill and offering information about apples and cider. The Gallery overlooks the 1889 Boomer & Boschert water-powered, water-hyraulic cider press producing some 20,000 gallons of cider each fall. The actual process takes place in the fall  at non-scheduled times dependent on cider sales.  At other times a video demonstrates the cider making process.

The cider making starts with the harvest of hand-picked Apples from New YorkÂŽ Apples. The apples are stored at 38 degrees Fahrenheit before pressing. As needed the apples are sent through the apple washer located in the Mill's old ice house where they are scrubbed with nine rows of brushes and heavy jets of fresh, clean water.

After washing, the apples fall into the grinder, a stainless-steel drum with knives running at high speends.  The grinder shreds the whole apple in to a course mash called pomace.  A progress-cavitey feed pump transfers the pomace to the second-level grinding area.

Layers of pomace are placed in nylon cloths between plastic racks in a formation called a "cheese." After the "cheese" is complete the entire pressing tray is rotated under the press. Pressure is applied by a two-cylinder water pump that is powered by the Lestner Water Turbine located in the basement of the Mill. The spinning turbine runs another flat belt to transfer power to the press's water-hydraulic pump creating pressure on the "cheese." The resulting sweet cider is pressed out of the pomace and held in a storage tank for the next step: assuring cider safety.

The Mill's newest piece of technology is an ultraviolet light processing machine called "Cidersure." The Cidersure process guarantees cider safety by shining high intensity ultraviolet light through a very thin stream of cider. The light eliminates the possibility of any harmful contaminates in the fresh juice the same as with pasteurization without the addition of heat, therefore retaining a freshly pressed taste.  Another advantave of the UV method is that it does not damage any of the natural yeast in the juice so it will still ferment.  The cider is then pumped into two storage tanks ready to be tasted and purchased by Mill visitors.

All of our cider is made in this fashion and without any preservatives....  nothing added - nothing taken away!

Tours are complimentary and self-guided.

“The wonderful, sweet, delicious golden flow of the autumnal harvest from the Fly Creek Cider Mill has arrived. We sit here in SW Florida sipping on this exceptional cider and have paired it with homemade guacamole and tortilla chips. This rich, syrupy apple cider, pressed on your historic Boomer and Boschert cider press using NY state apples kissed by the autumn frost, is as fresh as if it was squeezed earlier today. It truly is a remarkable treat for us.”

“"...but the Apple Cider itself, really was the best! In CT we have several well known cider farms but they really do not compare to the Fly Creek Cider! Fly Creek has no sediment on the bottom, just a fresh clean apple taste. (It even freezes very well without compromising the taste.) Will be back before Thanksgiving to pick up more cider... and pie! Great tasting apple pie without the overkill of nutmeg, cinnamon, or sugar like other places."”

“A diverse operation features everything from collectibles in a museum-like setting to a thriving retail operation”

The Cider Junction

A cider & beer taproom, a place to explore food and cider.

We invite you to Silicon Valley's first Cider Taproom - a place where you can explore craft ciders from around the world (and craft beers too!) and enjoy a small bite along with them.

The Cider Junction brings together the ``old`` and the ``new``: From craft ciders made in the traditional style (dry, aged, sometimes still, sometimes sparkling) to experimental ciders fermented or infused with other fruits, herbs and hops - We offer ciders on tap and in bottles and cans. Our friendly staff will assist you with your selections.

Our ambience leans on Santa Clara Valley’s rich history of orchards  in a casual and friendly atmosphere.

What exactly is a craft cider?

Cider is technically a fruit wine. Craft Cider has at its base either fresh pressed apples or 100% apple juice (i.e. the cider maker bought the juice, not the apples). The often small batches are then fermented (like wine), sometimes with the addition of fruit/puree/juices or herbs. Some bring them to market in a few weeks, others let them mature for months or even years. It is not brewed, i.e. there is no heat applied or water added.

We have over 20 taps  and 40+ ciders in cans and bottles for on-site consumption, plus craft beer and a selective wine offering.

cideries in PA

Here in Pennsylvania, we are blessed with an abundance of cideries all across the Commonwealth. There are orchard cideries that grow their own fruit, wineries and breweries that have added cider to their line of products, and city cideries that bring the flavor of the country to downtowns and urban neighborhoods.

Visiting a cidery (or two) is a lovely way to spend the day — many offer tours, guided tastings and flights, as well as to-go sales of cans, bottles and growlers. Some cideries in PA are more akin to full-fledged bars and restaurants, with additional local beverage options, like PA beer, wine and cocktails, as well as happy hours, dinner and brunch service.

To help you explore all that PA cider has to offer, we’ve put together the Pennsylvania Cider Trail. There are cideries to discover in all four corners of the state, and everywhere in between; use our guide to string together your own cider road-trip, add a cidery visit onto a vacation, or just check out a cidery in your own town the next time you’re looking for a fun night out.

All along the Western side of Pennsylvania, you’ll find craft cideries, as well as wineries, making their own lines of hard cider. From urban cideries in the bustling city of Pittsburgh to charming tasting rooms in rural communities, there is so much great cider to try in Western PA.

From Pip to Pint – A Thatchers Cider Tour

Thatchers Cider is without a doubt a Somerset staple, but despite choosing to lay my roots in the county I don’t yet have cider running through my veins. However that’s all about to change after a 2-hour cider tour with a cider tasting that would convert even the most cider-loathing person.

Disclaimer: I was invited to participate in a guided tour as part of the Visit Bristol Summer in Bristol campaign. I was not paid for this experience, and all opinions expressed in this article are my own.

Who are Thatchers Cider?

Thatchers Cider is a common sight across the West Country (and Australia apparently), but you’ll be forgiven for any lack of comprehension of the brand. Even as someone living in a cider-loving county, where the products are as synonymous on supermarket shelves as cheese and bread, I was completely unaware of the family traditions and innovations that form the brand.

As one of the few remaining independent cider makers, their heart-warming story from pip to pint truly showcases their dedication and pride in the products they produce, which they’ve lovingly crafted for over 115 years directly on Myrtle Farm.

Although Somerset is one of the main cider-producing counties in England, Thatchers is one of the few to use their own apple orchards – with around 500 acres – rather than farming their apples abroad. With complete transparency of the varieties grown, a bottle of Thatchers Cider can always promise the highest and standardised quality.

Thatchers Cider Tour

The family has meticulously planned each part of the plant-to-package process to produce around 50,000 canned and bottled products an hour.  During the 2-hour cider tour , you’ll be guided around the orchard and mills to learn more about the art of independent cider-making. Public tours run Wednesday to Sunday at ÂŁ15 pp for a 2-hour tour with cider tasting.

Here are some of my highlights.

The Exhibition Orchard

The Exhibition Orchard pays homage to the haughty apple, preserving around 458 of the rarest apple types that may otherwise be forgotten. Some of the varieties were rescued from the Long Ashton Research Station when the agricultural and horticultural research centre closed in 2002. Besides keeping a gene stock of the apple varieties, the farm completes ‘tree trials’ to discover new flavours that may be released as limited edition flavours. In fact, both the Rose and Haze were developed this way!

The orchards are even bee-friendly with on-site bee hives managed by local beekeepers to promote effective pollination.

The process is truly a sight to behold with tanks holding 200,000 pints, storing the cold liquid until its ready to be fermented. At the farm, you get to see the full-circle life of the apple from the orchard, to the cleaning and pressing, to bottling and packaging. The apple pomace – the waste – is taken away to be used for clean energy. Much of the process is automated, with a keen attention-to-detail, like the technology that ensures every label is perfectly placed each and every time.

The Historic Oaks Vats

Made in 1850 when Henry 8th was King, these 30ft tall oak vats still have a prime place at the farm. The largest of the 11 vats is said to hold around 135,500 pints of cider.

The Railway Inn

The restored traditional country pub on-site at Myrtle Farm is a reason to visit itself. It’s garnered quite a reputation as a foodie hot spot for its delectable menu that uses local, high-quality produce, even using cider in some dishes. And of course, it offers the full Thatchers cider range – as well as some limited edition flavours.

Traditional cider workers at the form loved the cider so much, they were paid in cider so enjoying it with a meal is nothing new. But perhaps less known is that the Thatchers offers such a range of styles that it can be paired with many different dishes or used in recipes .

It’s recommended to stop by for a bite to eat after your tour, and be sure to ask for a recommendation on a cider to complement the dish.

Thatchers Cider Shop

The on-site shop is open various times Tuesday to Sunday selling the all-important ciders, as well as limited editions, gifts, local cheeses and chutneys, books, cider mugs, glasses, and clothing.

The Strawberry Line

Amblers and cyclists can rejoice at knowing the farm sits on The Strawberry Line, a former railway path that is undergoing a transformation into a beautiful greenway through North and Mid-Somerset. Once completed, the path will be ‘ suitable for walkers, cyclists, wheelchair users, mobility scooters, and on some sections, equestrians’. The Railway Inn offers the perfect pit stop for those enjoying the path.

Portland Cideries Win Acclaim at the International Cider Awards

T hree Oregon cideries — Portland Cider Company , 2 Towns Cider , and Bauman’s Cider — won big at the International Cider Awards in London on May 1, bringing home a combined nine medals. Portland Cider Company’s Original Gold cider won the trophy, the competition’s top award. It is the first time in the competition’s 136-year history that a U.S. cidery has won best-in-show.

“Of course we aspire to our cider being among the best in the world. But I admit, I was speechless when I heard that our industry peers awarded us the top honor at the competition,” Portland Cider co-founder Jeff Parrish told Willamette Week . Bauman’s Cider won five medals and 2 Towns Cider was awarded two. The International Cider Awards are considered the most prestigious accolade in the industry and are determined by judges who are current practicing cidermakers themselves. The full list of winners is listed here .

A new cookbook profiles several Korean restaurants in Portland

Koreaworld, a new cookbook from Bay Area chef Deuki Hong and journalist Matt Rodbard, examines modern Korean cuisine in Korea and the United States. The book profiles Portland restaurants Han Oak, Jeju, Du’s Grill, Kim Jong Grillin, and Cameo Cafe. Hong and Rodbard will stop by Portland on their book tour for two events — at Powell’s City of Books on May 12 and at Jeju on May 13 (the $55 ticket includes a signed copy of the book, snacks from Jeju, and karaoke).

Kann and Ranger Chocolate are releasing a Caribbean chocolate bar

Gregory Gourdet’s Haitian restaurant Kann has collaborated with Ranger Chocolate Co. for the Portland chocolate makers’ first chef collaboration. The Caribbean chocolate bar is dairy-free and has notes of mango, ginger, and habanero, drawing flavor inspiration from Gourdet’s Haitian roots and Ranger founder George Domurot’s Puerto Rican roots. Pre-orders for the chocolate bar are open now — it will officially launch on May 18 (Haitian Flag Day) with a tasting and launch event at Ranger from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nicholas Galitzine Is the King of Pretty Tears in Amazon’s Addicting Romance ‘The Idea of You’

‘Mary & George’ Episode 5 Recap: “The Golden City”

‘mary & george’ creator d.c. moore explains that haunting shot of jenny in episode 5, stream it or skip it: ‘the idea of you’ on amazon prime video, a pleasingly horny may/december rom-com led by anne hathaway, yes, that’s really nicholas galitzine singing in ‘the idea of you’ — and he sounds fantastic.

Amazon Prime’s new swoon-y romantic drama, The Idea of You , has everything: Anne Hathaway looking hot as hell, genuine boy band bops sung by a fake boy band , and, most of all, Nicholas Galitzine looking very, very pretty while he cries.

Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Robinne Lee—and not, in fact, Harry Styles fan fiction— The Idea of You  stars Hathaway as a 40-year-old single mom who dutifully takes her 16-year-old daughter to Coachella to see her favorite boy band, August Moon. When she accidentally walks into the trailer of the 24-year-old frontman, Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), there are immediate sparks. Solène (Hathaway) insists she’s too old for him, but Hayes is persistent, and, eventually, their love story blooms.

But as Solène quickly discovers, dating a famous, twenty-something pop star as a 40-year-old professional can sometimes kind of suck. Like, for instance, when Solène hangs out with Hayes’s gossipy, spiteful twenty-something friends on tour. Those friends are all too happy to inform Solène that she’s not the first older woman to have Hayes Campbell dedicate a song to her. Solène politely excuses herself and then packs a bag to go home. When Hayes tries to stop her from leaving, they get into their first big fight.

Hayes argues that no one would care about the age difference if the gender roles were reversed. Solène responds that she knows many who would judge, actually—herself included. And it’s here that Galitzine flaunts his beautiful crying skills.

“You’re ashamed of me? Is that it?” Galitzine demands, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.

“I am… ashamed,” Hathaway responds, with an equally devastating expression of pain. And that’s the moment where my heart broke into two.

Most people don’t look good when they cry. Quite a few of us look downright ugly when the waterworks turn on. But not Galitzine. This man knows how to look good while he cries like it’s his job—which, I suppose, it is. We’ve already seen him do it before, when he got his heartbroken as the Prince of England in Red, White, and Royal Blue , and when his character came out as bisexual in The Craft: Legacy . It really is an art: You have to look like you’re in devastating pain, while still maintaining enough composure to deliver clear dialogue, and look good while doing it. The man is talented!

And those tearful talents are once again on full display in The Idea of You , an addicting, heart-wrenching romance that hits all the deliciously painful beats of heartbreak. Did I feel a little bad for enjoying the scenes where Galitzine’s character was suffering quite so much? Sure! But that didn’t stop me from rewinding the film and replaying those pretty tears over and over again.

It should be noted that, Hathaway, too, is incredibly good at simply gazing at Galitzine in the movie—all of her big, conflicting emotions playing out on her expressive face. Come for the fanfcition-y plot, and stay for the electric chemistry and top-notch acting. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll be aching for these two unconventional lovebirds to make it work. Just don’t expect to look quite as good as Galitzine when you do cry.
