Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki: Carnival Cruise Line's Japanese restaurants (with menus)

Kristy Tolley

When my husband and I took our first Carnival cruise 17 years ago on Carnival Conquest, the sushi completely won us over. At the time, the ship had a pop-up station that served small plates of fresh (and free) sushi and sake for a limited time before dinner. It was one of the highlights of our cruise, and when the line rolled out the permanent for-fee Bonsai Sushi restaurant in 2012, we were over the moon.

Today, Carnival's onboard sushi offering has extended to include a takeaway sushi venue and a teppanyaki-style restaurant on many ships. Whether your Carnival ship features a Bonsai Sushi, Bonsai Sushi Express or Bonsai Teppanyaki, I wholeheartedly encourage you to check it out.

Here's everything you need to know, from what's on the menu to which ships feature the popular sushi outposts.

What are Carnival's Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki?

carnival cruise sushi boat

Bonsai Sushi is an extra-charge a la carte sushi restaurant. The line launched the venue on Carnival Breeze in 2012, and today, it's on 15 Carnival ships. It opens for lunch at noon (on sea days) and for dinner at 5 p.m. (on sea days and port days).

Select ships without a Bonsai Sushi outpost feature a Bonsai Sushi Express takeaway counter. The condensed menu features shrimp, salmon and yellowfin tuna sushi or sashimi and four rolls — California, spicy tuna, bang bang Bonsai and tempura. You'll find a Bonsai Sushi Express on Carnival Conquest, Carnival Elation, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Luminosa, Carnival Miracle and Carnival Paradise.

Bonsai Teppanyaki, Carnival's first Japanese teppanyaki-style restaurant, debuted on Carnival Horizon in 2018.

As with land-based teppanyaki-style dining, the experience is part dinner and part theater. The restaurant features teppanyaki chefs who prepare tableside dishes with a dramatic flourish of knives and spatulas, often flinging food about for effect. It's a fun show, and kids usually go bananas over it.

The restaurant is intimate, with just two or three cooking stations that seat about 16 (depending on the ship), so you'll want to make reservations early.

Carnival Bonsai Sushi and Carnival Bonsai Teppanyaki menus

The Bonsai Sushi menu features starters like wagyu short ribs with caramelized onion and teriyaki sauce and a refreshing Bonsai noodle salad with ginger, sake, cold rice noodles, tomatoes, mushrooms and a chilled tomato dressing.

One of my favorite rolls here is the tempura roll with fried shrimp, cucumber, yuzu mayo, avocado and Bonsai Sushi sauce. Anther personal favorite is the California roll which is filled with crab, avocado, cucumber, sesame and tobiko mayo. My daughter orders the spicy tuna roll without fail — spicy tuna, tempura flakes, asparagus, tobiko, Yukon gold potato straws and spicy mayo.

You can also pair your meal with a Japanese beer, a glass of wine or sake.

As with land-based teppanyaki-style restaurants, the Bonsai Teppanyaki menu includes a choice of miso soup or salad, starters like teppanyaki white shrimp or pork belly yakitori, and a variety of protein options for your entree. Choose among teriyaki salmon, shichimi spiced grilled chicken, filet mignon, lobster, black cod and grilled tofu.

Can't decide? Opt for one of the combinations — shrimp and spiced grilled chicken or a filet mignon paired with shrimp, salmon or lobster tail.

What does it cost to eat at Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki?

A la carte prices at Bonsai Sushi range from $1.50 (per piece) for sushi or sashimi to $22 for the "Ship for 2" chef special; this includes miso soup, a side salad, two rolls and six pieces of sushi.

Bonsai Teppanyaki is priced at a flat $38 per person for lunch and $42 per person for dinner.

Which Carnival ships have Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki?

Bonsai Sushi is currently on 15 Carnival ships — Carnival Breeze, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Dream, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Legend, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Pride, Carnival Radiance, Carnival Spirit, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Sunshine , Carnival Venezia, Carnival Vista and Carnival Mardi Gras.

You'll find Bonsai Teppanyaki on six Carnival vessels — Carnival Jubilee , Carnival Celebration, Mardi Gras, Carnival Venezia , Carnival Panorama and Carnival Horizon.

This Cruise Life

Bonsai sushi on carnival: you might be surprised.

' src=

When we’re sailing on the open waters, it’s very rare that we decide to pony up the money for one of the onboard upcharge restaurants. Our mantra is that when we pay for a cruise, there’s so much included in our fare that it isn’t necessary to spend the extra money for those add-ons. Well, that all changed in June of 2022 when Mark was sailing with his best friend and her family. They were running early to dinner in the main dining room and decided to detour to Bonsai Sushi on board the Carnival Horizon for a pre-dinner snack. Check out their reaction to the offerings:

Fast-forward to Mark’s birthday cruise in October of 2022 when both of us sailed together. We decided to see one of our new favorite shows in the main theatre, Vintage Pop, and loved the cast in this production so much that we ended up watching both seatings! Unfortunately, this meant that we missed our dining time in the Main Dining Room. If we wanted to eat dinner we would have to forage for pizza, the scraps left on the buffet line, or we could eat at one of the up-charge options. To our surprise, Bonsai Sushi was still open so we decided to [vintage] pop in to give try it for the full dinner course!

Watch our full review to hear our real-time thoughts on this experience. Rather than just getting one or two sushi rolls, we opted for the Ship for 2 which included 3 sushi rolls, 3 sashimi, traditional salad, soup, and hot tea. Of course, we threw in a couple of drinks that can only be found at Bonsai Sushi. Neither of us are big into seafood, so you’ll definitely be surprised by our response!

After watching these two videos, you might be in the mood for sushi. Great news! Bonsai Sushi can be found on some of your favorite Ships (as of the time of this writing, alpha order): Carnival Breeze, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Dream, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Legend, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Pride, Carnival Radiance, Carnival Spirit, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Vista, Mardi Gras.

We hope you enjoyed our review of this Carnival specialty dining restaurant. If you liked it, check out some of our other cruise food reviews and cruise restaurant reviews on the channel. Thanks for tuning in!

Bonsai Sushi on a Carnival Breeze Cruise

During the launch of the all new  Carnival Breeze  I had heard there would be a new dining venue, Bonsai Sushi. I’ll admit, at first I didn’t even get excited about it since I had heard there would be an extra charge.

The first day on the Carnival Breeze there wasn’t anyone in this dining venue. I mean, it did look like it might be pricey, based on the setup and the high-end look. But by the second day on board as I passed by on my way to the Blush Dining Room, the place was packed.

Carnival Breeze dining Bonsai Sushi restaurant

I then found out about the charge and what Bonsai Sushi really offers — it’s a great place for your first sushi experience at a very reasonable price. Bonsai Sushi is Carnival’s first full-service sushi restaurant with a variety of Asian-inspired delicacies. It was so much fun to sit at a table decorated in a contemporary style with cute little Bonsai trees on the tables and artwork by graffiti artist Erni Vales.

If you’ve never had sushi, this is the perfect place to experiment to see if you like it. I’m a sushi lover, and I will admit I was very impressed by the quality of the food served. While sitting there, an impromptu celebration dance was performed, complete with koi kites.

tempura roll at Bonsai Sushi restaurant on Carnival Breeze

Prices range from $1 for appetizer-sized portions to a $15 sushi ship for two. The menu is pretty extensive for the minimal charge and there’s a variety of sushi, sashimi, rolls, a bento box and their version of a sushi boat. The deal is pretty impressive and it made for a fun and delicious meal. Bonsai Sushi is located on the Promenade Deck and is a fabulous venue for an afternoon snack or a full meal with friends or family.

Carnival Cruise Lines has made the sushi experience accessible for those who have never tried it before, giving guests an added value to their cruise experience — a way to broaden their culinary experience.

Weddings? Burials at sea? Unexpected things you can do on a cruise ship besides cruising

When thinking of a cruise , we generally imagine sailing away for a relaxing vacation of sun and fun. Lots of food, perhaps a drink with an umbrella in it and the magnificent ocean.

We're lucky in Florida, home to some of the world's busiest cruise ports including PortMiami, Port Canaveral , Port Everglades, Port Tampa Bay, JAXPORT, and Port of Palm Beach. There is also a port in Key West, but this is mainly used for cruise ship calls rather than a homeport.

Most people know cruises offer a great value and are nearly all-inclusive with good food , accommodations and entertainment. Add to that exotic ports of call and shore excursions that strike all fancies, from beach bums to adrenaline junkies.

But there are some lesser-known accommodations available on most cruise ships .

From joyous occasions to celebrations of life, here are some extraordinary services cruise ships offer.

You can get married on a cruise ship

Want to say "I do" onboard a majestic ship or at an exotic location?

You can do that on a cruise ship and be on your honeymoon at the same time.

Many cruise lines, including Disney Cruise Lines , Carnival and Royal Caribbean , offer weddings and wedding renewals aboard the ship or at scenic tropical locations.

Your guests don't even have to cruise with you.

For example, 50 non-sailing guests can take part in weddings aboard Carnival Cruise Line ships before the cruise sails from the port of embarkation.

Royal Caribbean allows for 75 of 150 wedding guests to be non-sailing. NCL permits up to 10 non-sailing guests free of charge, but a reception must be booked if you have up to 50 guests who are not sailing.

Check with your cruise line for availability and details.

Burial at sea: Scattering a loved one's ashes from a cruise ship

A loved one's remains can be buried at sea during a cruise.

Several cruise lines allow for the scattering of cremated remains from their ships, provided the guest can produce the decedent's death and cremation certificates.

The remains are generally required to be in a biodegradable urn and some cruise lines require the entire urn to be tossed into the sea.

Cruise lines work with guests to determine burial time and place. Guests are usually taken to a more secluded part of the ship and given privacy for scattering the remains.

Contact your cruise line before boarding for availability and policies.

Cruise ships have jails. Can you get arrested on a cruise ship?

While there are a lot of perks for traveling via cruise ship, there are some facilities available on most cruise ships that may surprise you.

For example, many cruise ships have a small jail, called a brig. The brig is generally located on one of the bottom decks.

Misbehavior or breaking the law on a cruise ship can see you confined to your cabin or locked up in the brig.

Do cruise ships have hospitals?

Most cruise ships sailing from U.S. ports have medical facilities, including a doctor, on board to treat minor illnesses and injuries, and to stabilize patients with more serious health issues until they can be transferred to land-based facilities.

While available, medical care on a cruise ship is not free . Your land-based health insurance is generally not accepted on board and medical service fees are charged to your sailing account.

Your health insurance may not cover you while you're on the ship and out of the country. Check with your provider before boarding and look into travel health insurance for concerns over recouping any out-of-pocket costs.

Is there a morgue on cruise ships?

Morbidly, yes, there's a morgue on board. It's legally required , according to Readers Digest .

In case of a death, the body is stored in the morgue until it can be transferred off the ship.

Carnival cancels 2 planned cruises from Port Canaveral after ship catches fire

Passengers on a Carnival cruise ship that caught fire over the weekend disembarked at Port Canaveral on Monday.

▶ WATCH CHANNEL 9 EYEWITNESS NEWS

Videos sent to Ch. 9 show dark smoke and flames coming from the Carnival Freedom’s exhaust funnel on Saturday.

Carnival says lightning may be to blame.

In response to this fire, the next two cruises on the ship have been canceled.

Read: 2 crew members killed on Holland America cruise ship during incident onboard

The ship was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday, and then again on Friday.

The fire was reported while the ship was near the Bahamas.

Passengers reported seeing lightning strike the boat, but the investigation is still underway.

Read: New cruise line coming to Port Canaveral this year

Carnival Cruise Lines released the following statement:

Carnival Freedom experienced a fire in the port side of the exhaust funnel on Saturday. Our onboard team acted quickly to contain and put out the fire. While we continue to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike, our technical team completed a thorough assessment during the ship’s visit to Freeport today. Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral.

The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs.

We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both cancelled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support.

Carnival Glory Sets Sail For New Home of Port Canaveral

  • April 19, 2024

The Carnival Glory returned to service today in Barcelona following a 21-day drydock.

The ship is setting sail on a 14-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic cruise to the ship’s new homeport of Port Canaveral, Fla. While guests embarked, Captain Luca Cherchi was joined onboard by Barcelona port officials for a plaque exchange that marked the ship’s special visit, according to a press release.

Over the last three weeks, the ship received several enhancements, including a new casino layout and the addition of a non-smoking casino area, refreshed interior designs and furnishings across all public areas and a newly added Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge, a popular venue that is expanding across the Carnival fleet and honors military veterans and active-duty service members.

A Dreams Photography Studio was also added and upgrades were made to the ship’s spa.

For younger cruisers, the dedicated onboard youth space, Camp Ocean, was redesigned and a large video wall was added to enhance the Space Cruisers program, which includes curriculum developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The ship’s Warehouse video arcade was refreshed as well. Guests will also notice updates to public areas across the ship.

On May 2, the Carnival Glory will join Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Mardi Gras, in Port Canaveral, where she will offer three- and four-day itineraries visiting The Bahamas, including Nassau, Freeport, Princess Cays and Bimini. Carnival Liberty is repositioning from Port Canaveral to New Orleans and will arrive there on May 6.

Things To Do

The revamped Carnival Glory went through a 21-day refurbishment ahead of its arrival to Port Canaveral. (Courtesy/Carnival Cruise Line)

Carnival Cruise Line has revamped its Carnival Glory cruise ship with new features before it heads to its new home at Port Canaveral.

The 110,000-gross-ton ship is taking on three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from the port, joining three other Carnival ships. Built in 2003, the ship has a 2,980-guest passenger capacity based on double occupancy.

It recently came out of a 21-day dry dock at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, receiving some enhancements found on other Carnival ships.

Carnival Glory was given a version of the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge during its 2024 dry dock. (Courtesy/Carnival Cruise Line)

Changes include a new casino layout, including a nonsmoking area, and a Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge that pays deference to military veterans and active-duty service members, taking over the SkyBox Sports Bar. Also added were a Dreams Photography Studio and upgrades within the spa.

When it debuted more than 20 years ago, Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was named its godmother. Its space-themed pedigree extends to enhancements added to the youth area Camp Ocean, which now has a large video wall for its Space Cruisers program. Its curriculum was developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Also updated is the video arcade and redubbed The Warehouse.

The refurb also removed the aft-pool Sky Dome, while the ship received routine hotel maintenance, cosmetic enhancements, ADA compliant updates in public areas and select staterooms including the addition of Ambulatory Accessible staterooms.

Stateroom balconies were also redone with new windows and doors and every stateroom had new LED lighting and bathroom nightlights added.

The ship sailed out of Barcelona on Thursday for a 14-night transatlantic voyage to Port Canaveral.

Its first sailing from Florida will be May 2. It joins Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Carnival’s Mardi Gras calling the Orlando-area port home.

Leaving is Carnival Liberty, which is moving to New Orleans.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said Carnival Glory received an updated hull paint scheme during the 2024 dry dock. It had its hull paint scheme updated in 2021.
