Kaua'i

Hawaii - the big island, honolulu - oahu.

Though it's perhaps most famous for the fabulous coastlines of Ka'anapali Beach and Wailea Beach, Maui is a great option for both couples and families looking for variety in their vacation. Away from the sand, you can drive the Road to Hana, enjoy a bird's-eye view during a helicopter tour , see one of the world's largest dormant volcanoes at Haleakala National Park and get up close to marine wildlife while snorkeling in Honolua Bay or around Molokini. Then, for an experience you won’t forget, relax on the volcanic coastline of Wai'anapanapa State Park, where jet-black sands meet vibrant sapphire waters.

With a more easygoing environment than other islands like Oahu and the Big Island, the Garden Isle lets its wild, natural beauty speak for itself and is perfect for an adventurous getaway. The main attractions here are Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." But you also won’t want to miss Kaua'i’s breathtaking Wailua Falls or dreamy Po'ipu Beach. And if a challenging hike is what you’re after, it doesn’t get more scenic than the Kalalau Trail along the rugged Napali Coast. Just remember to pack galoshes and a rain jacket – Kaua'i is one of Hawaii's rainiest islands.

The island of Hawaii's bevy of one-of-a-kind attractions and family-friendly activities makes it ideal for travelers who prefer a jam-packed itinerary. Not only does the Big Island offer white and black sand beaches , including the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, it is also home to lush rainforests and two active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. History buffs will love visiting Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (home to one of Hawaii's largest restored temples) and Kealakekua Bay (where British explorer James Cook first arrived in 1779). Or, head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to see petroglyphs, ancient Hawaiian fishponds and green sea turtles.

The least-developed island on this list, Moloka'i was made for those who don’t mind going off the beaten path. With lush rainforests, miles of beautiful beaches and some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, Moloka'i is a great place to reconnect with nature, whether you’re staying overnight at one of Moloka'i’s quiet oceanfront cottages – there is only one hotel on the island – or visiting on a day trip from one of the other Hawaiian Islands. Dubbed The Gathering Place, Oahu is home to plenty of famous sites and a great jumping-off point for first-time visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. How Much is the Average Family Vacation to Hawaii?

The cost of your trip to Hawaii will depend on numerous factors, including where you go, when you go, and the type of accommodations you choose. However, the average cost of a 10-day trip during peak time (June) clocks in at around $13,000 for a family of four. That price includes airfare, hotel, rental car, food, and activities.

While we love all the islands for a family vacation – many people usually end up choosing either Maui or Oahu. Both islands have their own unique characteristics and vibes, but at the end of the day, we generally opt for Maui when it comes to a family vacation. Not only will you have nice beaches and national parks, but there’s also a varied mix of fun activities that kids of all ages will enjoy.

But don’t get us wrong – we love Oahu too! And while it has a distinct city vibe (it’s home to the bustling city of Honolulu , after all), there are still quiet and laid-back places where you can enjoy your relaxing vacation. And one of our absolute favorite family friendly resorts is on the island.

22 Best Family Resorts in Hawaii

As we mentioned, finding a hotel in Hawaii that accommodates families is not hard. However, there are clearly some hotels that are better than others. For this reason, we put together an exhaustive list of all our favorite family-friendly hotels (in no particular order) based on location, room quality, dining options, and kid-friendly activities and amenities.

Turtle Bay Resort – Oahu

Situated on the North Shore of Oahu, Turtle Bay Resort is the perfect family retreat for those looking for an island getaway. As it is far from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu and Waikiki, Turtle Bay Resort has a laid-back atmosphere – albeit with a few luxury touches. And you can choose from different sized rooms, from basic guest studios to 4-bedroom ocean villas.

To start, you’ll have 1,300 acres of beachfront to explore, including the shallow kid-friendly beaches of Keiki Cove and Stables Beach. There are also four different pools on the property if you prefer something less sandy. Little ones will love the water slides at the Keiki Pool, while adults can enjoy some me-time at the adult-only infinity pool.

Turtle Bay Resort also has a seemingly never-ending list of activities you can participate in. You can take a ukulele or hula lesson, play a game of pickleball at the on-site courts, or get up close with the resort’s ponies. The Brave Mermaid Show is another huge hit, plus aspiring mermaids can also join her academy to splash around in the pool with their own set of fins.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort – Oahu

This is the only beachfront resort in the exclusive area of Kahala (on the other side of Diamond Head, just 15 minutes from downtown Waikiki). And despite being one of the most luxurious resorts on the island, the Kahala Hotel manages to retain a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

Besides the beach, the hotel also has an outdoor swimming pool with food and drink service. But the real highlight of the Kahala is the natural ocean lagoon, which is home to a pod of bottlenose dolphins where guests can book different dolphin encounters and experiences.

In terms of free activities, families can choose from a variety of cultural classes. Other activities, like fitness classes, standup paddle boarding, and kayaking will cost extra. The on-site kids club is also an extra fee, although a worthwhile option if you want to have a child-free day or afternoon to spend at the spa or pool.

Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club is an excellent option for small families as well as large groups. Choose from 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom villas and enjoy the comforts of home (fully equipped kitchens, separate living areas, dining table) while also having the benefits of a beautiful waterfront resort.

There are three pools on the property, as well as 7 outdoor whirlpools, a spa, and a fitness studio. It’s important to note that there aren’t many organized activities like what you would find at some of the bigger name resorts, although they do host a few cultural classes, like lei making, throughout the week.

While some people might love the secluded location on the west side of the island, others may find it too far from other attractions. However, you will be the only hotel on Lagoon 3, which is a tranquil and protected area where your kids can snorkel or swim.

If you want to make magical lifelong memories on your vacation, then book a stay at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa . Disney has excelled at creating imaginative and immersive experiences around the world – and this resort is no exception.

And even if you’re not a die-hard Disney fan, you can still enjoy the beauty of the grounds and the bountiful activities they have to offer. Think Disney character meet-and-greets, Hawaiian cultural classes, star gazing, fire pit storytelling, live music, and more. If you want more traditional vacation activities, you can also rent boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, or paddleboards to explore the nearby Ko Olina Lagoons.

The pool area is also nothing short of outstanding. There’s an interactive kid’s splash zone, a rapid river for tubing, and a pool with play structures and water slides (adults also have a few adult-only pools to choose from too). Or you can snorkel with marine life in the hotel’s private and protected saltwater lagoon. But keep in mind that just like Disneyland, this hotel is crowded.

When booking your room, keep in mind that a family of four can sleep comfortably in the standard rooms at the resort. If you’d like more space or the option to cook, you can book one of their suites or villas.

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina – Oahu

The luxurious Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina is guaranteed to be the backdrop to your amazing vacation. With so much to keep both kids and adults occupied, it’s arguably one of the best resorts in Ko Olina.

For activities, guests can unwind by the pool (there are four, including a Keiki Pool designed just for kids), snorkel in the blue Ko Olina Lagoons, or play a round of tennis on their ocean-view courts. They also have an extensive program of activities which includes the Stars Above Hawaii stargazing program and the Four Seasons Wayfinders cultural classes, both of which we know kids will love.

Most importantly, the Four Seasons offers a complimentary kid’s club for guests between the ages of 5 and 12, where they can participate in arts and crafts, sports, and nature walks. They also have seasonal kid’s activities like skateboard camps, summer glamping, and artistic workshops.

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina Features

Royal Hawaiian – Oahu

If you’re walking along Waikiki Beach, you can’t miss this iconic pastel-pink hotel. The historic Royal Hawaiian is a great option if you want to be close to all the action, as it’s located in the heart of Waikiki next to tons of restaurants, bars, and retail shops.

There’s only one pool on the property – the Malulani Pool – although guests are more than welcome to use the Helumoa Playground located next door at the Sheraton Waikiki. This is a huge benefit for families, as it features two pools, a 70-foot-long water slide, interactive kid’s fountains, and water toy rentals.

Throughout the week, you can participate in various cultural activities like lei making, lauhala weaving, and ukulele lessons. The resort also offers morning yoga, an intro to stand up paddle board class, and Go Pro Hero 8 rentals (all for free). Little ones can also participate in programs at the Poppins Keiki Center, the on-site children’s day club at the Royal Hawaiian.

Fairmont Kea Lani – Maui

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel with some of the most spacious rooms in Maui, then the Fairmont Kea Lani is for you. This resort offers spacious 1-bedroom suites (860 – 1100 sq ft) and 2- or 3-bedroom villas (1800 – 2200 sq ft). Having a separate sleeping area (and a full kitchen and private pool if you’re in the villa) really makes a huge difference when traveling with kids.

Parents and kids will equally love the Fairmont’s outdoor pool. Well, it’s actually a multi-level pool connected by an exhilarating 140-foot water slide. And for more inexperienced swimmers, there’s a Keiki pool where they can play in the shallow waters with toys. They also host different kid-friendly events throughout the week, like intro to scuba for kids class, ninja obstacle courses, and even henna tattooing. And don’t worry – there’s an adult-only pool for those who need some relaxation too!

However, one of the best parts about staying here is the Keiki Dining Program, which allows kids under the age of 5 get to eat free! Older kids between 6 and 12 will also receive 50% off full-prized entrees from the adult menu.

Fairmont Kea Lani Features

Ka’anapali Beach Hotel – Maui

The recently renovated Ka’anapli Beach Hotel is an affordable alternative to the many high-end resorts along the golden shores of Ka’anapali Beach. And it’s right next to Black Rock , one of the best places on the island for snorkeling and cliff diving.

The rooms aren’t super large (the average size is just 425 sq ft), however, they do have a private lanai which is not always common for other budget hotels. If you need more space, we recommend booking the Ocean Front Suite, which has a separate bedroom and living area to accommodate 5 people.

Their pool is also on the small side, but with the beautiful shores of the pacific ocean just steps away, you can easily spend all your days at the beach instead. Snorkel gear, stand up paddle boards, and body boards can all be rented at the Ocean Activities booth at the hotel.

Other family-friendly activities include hula dancing, kukui lei making, bark cloth dying, and instrument making. However, the highlight is the nightly hula show on the outdoor terrace of Huihui restaurant. It’s a great way to keep the kids entertained while you enjoy the sunset with a tropical cocktail in hand.

Ka’anapali Beach Hotel Features

The Westin Maui Resort and Spa at Ka’anapali

The Westin is paradise on earth, with lush tropical grounds, a fantastic pool area, and a prime location in the heart of Ka’anapali Beach. There are six pools on the property, giving you an astounding 87,000 sq ft of space to hang out. Kids can play in the fountains of the Keiki Splash Zone or shoot down the 270-foot water slide, while parents can enjoy the picturesque ocean views from the adult-only infinity pool.

The Westin has a fun and interactive kids club for your little ones (aged 5 to 12). Activities change each day but may include arts and crafts, animal expeditions, Hawaiian culture classes, and nature adventures.

If your dream vacation is having access to an amazing pool, then you will absolutely love your time at the Grand Wailea . You won’t just have one pool to hang out in – you’ll have nine! The Grand Wailea pool area is one of the most elaborate outdoor spaces in all of Maui, with four water slides, a lazy river, waterfalls, a rope swing, and a cave grotto (with a bar!).

And while the resort is famous for its pools, there are so many other things that you’ll love about your stay. Beach yoga, outrigger tours, cultural classes, art galleries, boutique shops – these are just a few activities that you can do on-site. Kids will also get their very own Grand Passport on check-in, with kid-friendly maps and activities to keep them engaged on vacation.

More adventurous guests may also try the scuba program. The Grand Wailea is home to the only resort-designated scuba training pool in Hawaii, so make sure to take advantage of their free first-time diver lessons (available to adults and kids over 12).

If you want to stay in the heart of Wailea with plenty of activities to keep you busy, then the Wailea Beach Resort might be the best option for your family. It’s not directly on the beach (which can be a dealbreaker for some), although you can reach Wailea Beach or Ulua Beach in 10 minutes by taking the scenic Wailea Beach Path.

And you might not miss the beach considering that Wailea Beach Resort has three awesome pools – one of which is home to Hawaii’s longest water slide. Nearby, you’ll also find the family-friendly Ohi Pools and the adult-only Maluhia Pool (which features their signature floating overwater cabanas).

The Wailea Beach Resort has some really great amenities that you won’t find at other resorts. In addition to their sleek and modern kids club, they also have an in-house movie theater (3x daily showings), gaming area (foosball, arcade games, board games), and nightly s’more roasting. In addition, you can also sign up for one of their complimentary cultural activities or fitness classes.

Wailea Beach Resort Features

Montage Kapalua Bay – Maui

On the rugged northwestern coast of Maui sits the 5-star Montage Kapalua Bay. The hotel is an idylic tropical oasis, with luxury facilities and an abundance of activities for kids as well as their parents.

The Montage has three on-site pools, although you won’t find any kid-focused playthings like water slides or splash zones. For that reason, we’re glad the hotel offers the Paintbox day camp, where kids can play games, make crafts, or take adventures down to the beach or tide pools. Three times a week, they also have a “Children’s Night Out” Program, so parents can have a relaxing dinner out while the little ones can do fun evening activities.

The residential-style rooms are ultra-spacious, with their most basic 1-bedroom suite clocking in at a whopping 1,250 sq ft. It (along with all their rooms) comes with full gourmet kitchens, washers and dryers, and separate living and dining areas, so you can really feel like you are right at home on vacation.

Honu Kai Resort & Spa- Maui

Can’t decide between a resort and a vacation rental? The Honu Kai Resort & Spa is the perfect blend of both. Not only will you have the full amenities of a condo (kitchen, washer and dryer, etc.), but you will also enjoy having a pool and gourmet restaurants right outside your door.

They offer everything from luxury studios all the way up to 2,000 sq ft 3-bedroom villas. However, each unit is individually owned, so it’s important that you read reviews and check out photos for your specific rental, as quality and condition can vary.

Unlike other vacation rentals in the area, the Honu Kai pool area is equal to (if not better) than many of the other resorts in North Ka’anapali. It has three swimming areas, five hot tubs, a waterslide, and even a cascading waterfall.

The biggest downside of staying here is the lack of organized activities. If you’re planning to spend most of your time at the pool or exploring Maui, this shouldn’t be a big deal. But others wanting more on-site options in terms of classes or kids programs may want to stick to one of our other recommendations.

With a picture-perfect location right on the Kohala Coast, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa has direct access to the sparkling ‘Anaeho’omalu Bay. The hotel grounds are impeccably beautiful as well, with swaying palm trees, tropical gardens, and some of the best views for watching the sunset.

Plus the pool area is massive! There’s a large infinity pool, a separate pool with a water slide, and even a shallow pool made just for kids. Even if you prefer to spend your time soaking up the sun on a lounger, you’ll still enjoy the pool area thanks to the little frozen “pool pleaser” treats that get passed around during the day.

Hotel activities include beach yoga, pool fitness classes, or cultural activities, however, you’re more than welcome to rent beach gear or book an excursion with the A’Bay Beach Hut down by the water (although you will need to pay for the rentals). To enhance your experience, we recommend booking a room in the brand new Na Hale Wing. These 1- and 2-bedroom suites have much more space and beautiful ocean-facing views. For something unique, book one of the shower suits, which has an outdoor garden rain shower!

Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa – the Big Island

In our opinion, the Outrigger Konda Resort & Spa is one of the best family-friendly hotels on the Kona side of the island. And whilst the resort isn’t on the beach (Keauhou Bay Beach Park is an 8-minute walk from the resort), it does have a great pool that the kids will love. There’s a thrilling 200-foot waterslide as well as a shallow area with a sandy bottom for the less adventurous ones.

Guests can take advantage of the various organized activities, which include lei making, ukulele playing, and fitness classes. However, the coolest activity offered at the Outrigger is manta ray viewing. This is one of the best spots on the island where you can see giant manta rays right in front of the hotel. For a more immersive experience, book a night snorkeling tour to see these majestic creatures up close.

The rooms are somewhat small (430 sq ft) and a little outdated, but suitable for small families. If you want more room for the kids to play, we recommend booking one of their oceanfront suites instead. Not only are they twice as large, but they also feature a separate bedroom, a pull-out sofa bed, and access to the Voyager 47 club lounge.

Mauna Lani – the Big Island

This award-winning resort is subtle luxury at its finest. Adults will love the sleek decor and upscale vibe while kids can enjoy the unique amenities and treats created especially for them. But despite what you may think, the Mauna Lani is anything but stuffy and uptight, so it’s great for those who want to enjoy a bit of rest and relaxation on their trip.

It all starts with the complimentary keiki club, where they’ll spend the day taking cooking classes, doing cultural activities, or playing in the pool or ocean. The resort also has a kiddie pool and a kid beach (a protected cove where they can swim and snorkel). And you can’t forget the Great Lawn, one of the coolest hang-out areas with lawn games and a food truck.

Almost 90% of rooms on the property are ocean-view, so you can wake up to the sunrise and crashing ocean waves outside your window. Depending on your party, you’ll have lots of options for rooms. Larger families can stay in one of the suites or private residences, which range in size from 1,040 to 4,000 sq ft. Or you can book a 2-bedroom suite or connecting room, as there’s always to option to add a rollaway bed or crib.

Four Seasons Hualalai – the Big Island

When you stay at the Four Seasons Hualalai, you won’t have to sacrifice luxury for a family-friendly atmosphere. This resort seamlessly does both, making it a great option for guests of any age.

The family amenities are really something special, with child welcome gifts, kid-sized robes, and free access to the Children’s video library (which is a lifesaver during naptime or bedtime!). They also have a complimentary kid’s program for younger guests (5 to 12) and a seasonal camp experience for those aged 9 to 17.

But even without all the cool kid amenities, the resort is still one of our top choices thanks to the beautiful property, which has eight outdoor pools. A family-friendly infinity pool, an ambient cocktail pool, a lap pool, shallow keiki pool – the Four Seasons has it all! But most of all, we love the King’s Pond and Marine Center, which contains over 1,000 different kinds of tropical fish. It’s ideal for snorkeling, especially if your kids are too intimidated by going in the ocean!

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel – the Big Island

With a picture-postcard location on the sparkling shores of the famous Kauna’oa Beach, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is a top pick if you’re craving outdoor adventure. Snorkeling, swimming, canoeing, boogie boarding, even manta ray watching! This is a huge plus, considering that the hotel pool is quite small.

However, easy access to the beach is only of the main selling points of the Mauna Kea. Kids will be spoiled for choice by the sheer number of activities offered at the hotel. Their daily activity calendar includes an array of cultural classes, fitness classes, and live music and entertainment. They can also join the Keiki Club for a day of games, arts, and nature exploration with their fellow travelers.

Families can book their stay in the main building (Tower Rooms) or in the brand new Beachfront Wing. Rooms in either area start at 590 sq ft, which is quite generous compared to other resorts in this price range. Those needing more space can upgrade to one of the suites, which have separate living areas and start at 1,268 sq ft in size.

Hilton Waikoloa Village – the Big Island

When it comes to big family resorts, the Hilton Waikoloa Village is arguably one of the most impressive. Covering over 62 acres of land on the Kohala Coast, this resort is a world in its own, with 1,000 rooms, three pools, 9 restaurants and bars, and even its very own saltwater lagoon. It’s so big that there’s even a resort tram to help you travel from one place to another!

As you can imagine, the Hilton also has a massive list of fun activities for the whole family. However, we find that your little ones will probably want to spend most of the time snorkeling, kayaking, or even aqua-biking in the lagoon. There are tons of tropical fish and even turtles that you can see swimming here. And there’s also the neighboring Dolphin Quest Lagoon, which offers the only hands-on dolphin experience on the Big Island.

When they’re not in the lagoon, your kids can also play in the pools, walk across the rope bridge, slide down the 175-foot water side, or float down the river canal.

Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu – Kauai

As the winner of the Best Pool in America award by USA Today for the third year in a row, the Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu is the perfect setting for an action-packed trip to Kauai. With a lush garden setting, waterfalls, waterslides, and a rocky grotto, you won’t even care that this resort is located away from the beach.

While the pool is the main reason to stay here, we also can’t help but mention the on-site activities. There’s a putting green, volleyball court, fitness classes, lei making, ukulele lessons, art courses, and even s’mores nights!

And as parents, you’ll love the spacious family-sized rooms, which are nearly twice as large as the standard hotel room on Kauai. The basic rooms come with Queen sleeper sofas, kitchenettes, and a washer and dryer unit, so you can enjoy the amenities of being at home without staying in a rented condo building. To accommodate more people, you can also book one of their 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom villas that come with full gourmet kitchens and private en-suite bathrooms.

The 5-star Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa really has something for every guest. It’s one of the largest resorts on the whole island, with sprawling gardens, a massive multi-level pool complex, and 5 on-site restaurants (plus a twice-weekly traditional luau).

Let’s start by talking about the pool, which is actually 3 distinct swimming areas and a separate saltwater lagoon. You can be as active or as inactive as you want (adults will love the private cabanas while kids can play on the waterslide or float in the lazy river). This is a key feature of the Grand Hyatt, as the beach next to the resort is very rocky with large swells that are better suited for surfing than swimming.

The resort has a packed itinerary of different daily activities, most of which are Hawaiian cultural classes like lei making or ukulele playing. For more adventure, kids between the ages of 3 and 12 can spend the day at Camp Hyatt, where they’ll play games, go to the park, or do arts and crafts.

Depending on how many people you’re traveling with, you can book a guestroom, connecting room, or one of the expansive suites (which range from 866 sq ft all the way up to 2,480 sq ft). Some even have walk-in closets, reading nooks, or wet bars.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa Features

Waipouli Beach Resort – Kauai

The Waipouli Beach Resort is part resort and part vacation rental with a pristine location on the golden shores of Waipouli Beach. And while this beach is great for watching the sunset or spotting turtles, it’s not the best option for swimming. But thankfully, the amazing pool more than makes up for that.The pool complex rivals that of most major hotel chains, with bubbling hot tubs, fun waterslides, and even cascading waterfalls.

As with most vacation rental properties, you’ll be booking a unit (1 or 2 bedrooms are available) that is privately owned. That means there may be some variance in consistency between the different apartments. Therefore, it’s important that you read reviews and look at the photos of the specific unit you want to rent. You may also choose to book directly with Marriott Homes & Villas, which also have rooms for rent on their site.

The benefit of staying at the Waipouli Beach Resort is that they come with equipped kitchenettes. Meaning you can cook meals (and save money) instead of eating out at restaurants every day. But if you need a break, there is a poolside bar that serves drinks and food throughout the day.

Finally, the resort has a fitness center and spa, but it doesn’t organize any on-site activities that you’d find at a more traditional resort. This can be a deal breaker for those with active kids, especially since the beach isn’t suitable for young swimmers.

For some travelers, Oahu is synonymous with the high-rise hotels lining beautiful Waikiki Beach, but there are family-friendly resorts all over the island. The good news is that no matter where you stay, a vacation in Oahu tends to be less expensive than on other Hawaiian islands.

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa is directly on Waikiki Beach and within walking distance of the city's open-air shopping and dining center, the Waikiki Beach Walk. While we encourage you to explore beyond just Waikiki, this can be the perfect location if you are looking for a beach retreat on Oahu that's not too far from the excitement of the city.

The hotel opened in 1901, and its history shines through in the Victorian-era architecture and select guest rooms inspired by the hotel's opening-day design and decor. The hotel has 793 rooms total, including 46 suites, divided among the historic Banyan Wing, the beach-adjacent Diamond Wing and the larger, modern rooms in the Tower Wing.

The hotel's pool is simple compared to some of the large pool complexes in Hawaii, but it has fantastic beach views. You can easily pop back and forth between the pool and the beach all day long, especially if you rent a poolside cabana or an umbrella and chairs on the sandy beach. You can also take to the ocean on a surfboard, stand-up paddleboard or bodyboard. Outrigger canoe charters and surf lessons are also available. If your family loves Hawaii and visiting Disney, you'll likely enjoy a stay at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa on Oahu. Even if you aren't a "Disney family," you can still love this resort.

For example, you can spend your time meeting Disney characters, eating Mickey waffles and participating in activities like animation classes and watching outdoor Disney movie screenings. Or, you can just lounge by the beach, snorkel in the hotel's private lagoon and participate in fun and educational activities like lei making and hula lessons led by local artisans and cultural experts.

Kauai, known as the Garden Island, offers families the best of the beach and the island's emerald green peaks and valleys. It takes only about an hour to drive from the south end of the island to the north end, giving families the opportunity to see favorite landmarks like Hanalei Bay, Waimea Canyon State Park and Kalalau Lookout, depending on where you stay.

On Kauai's beautiful, tranquil north shore, The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas is just as serene as its island location. No matter what you're looking for in a vacation – adventure, relaxation, romance, cultural experiences, food – Hawaii has it all.

Every island has its own kind of vibe, from the laid-back serenity of Kauaʻi to the bustling beach towns of Maui. There are so many unique experiences , too, like hiking to an active volcano on Hawaiʻi Island and watching monster surf crash on Oʻahu's North Shore.

With so many options, here's a shortcut to the best experiences you can have in the Aloha State.

1. Waikiki, Oʻahu

Waikiki on Oʻahu's sunny south shore is the state's most famous resort town. Over the years, the neighborhood has evolved to be less kitschy and more authentic. Hotels offer lei-making classes in their open-air lobbies, and traditional hula is showcased on the tiki torch-lit hula mound on Kuhio Beach . Take surfing lessons from modern-day beach boys or indulge in afternoon tea at the historic Moana Surfrider . Some of the island's best restaurants are located in Waikiki, too.

Planning tip : The Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort has been putting on a fireworks show every Friday night since 1988 (bar the pandemic years). Bring a picnic dinner and find a spot on the beach to watch the skies light up. The show starts at 7:45pm during the winter and 8pm in the summer.

2. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiʻi Island

The 323,431-acre Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on Hawaiʻi Island is a place unlike anywhere else in Hawaii (or the US). This is one of the few places in the world where you can drive up to safely view an active volcano. Kilauea , an active shield volcano, had been, up until 2018, continuously erupting and altering the landscape since 1983. It's currently not active , but that can change any day. The national park – one of five on the Big Island – stretches from sea level to the summit of the 13,679ft Mauna Loa , one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Trek along one of dozens of hiking routes in the park and see old lava flows and tubes, steam vents, and native trees and birds.

Detour : Stop at Volcano Village, a rustic town in the middle of a lush rainforest filled with native hapuʻu fern and 'ōhiʻa trees just outside the park. You can find quaint vacation rentals here, a handful of restaurants, a farmers market on Sundays, a small winery that sells locally produced wine, an orchid farm and the Volcano Art Center , a working arts studio and gallery.

3. The Island of Molokaʻi

Undeveloped and often overlooked, Molokaʻi offers some of the most unique experiences of any of the Hawaiian Islands. Spanning 38 miles long and 10 miles across at its widest point, this island – the fifth largest in Hawaii – is home to the world's tallest sea cliffs, the longest waterfall in the Islands and one of the state's largest white-sand beaches, Papohaku Beach . 

There are no big resorts or traffic lights here; instead, you'll find the windswept Moʻomomi Dunes, the 2744-acre Kamakou Preserve with its unique montane bog, and the secluded Kalaupapa Peninsula, once an isolated community of patients with Hansen's disease. Stop at Kanemitsu Bakery in Kaunakakai for freshly made Molokaʻi sweet bread right out of the oven.

4. Hana, Maui

The 53-mile Hana Highway – also known as the Road to Hana – is as scenic as it is winding. The road twists across 59 mostly one-lane bridges, along plunging cliffs, past waterfalls and around 620 turns to the unspoiled town of Hana on Maui's northeast coast. The drive itself – which can take several hours – is part of the journey. Once in Hana, enjoy hala tree-lined Hamoa Beach , sunbathe at Waiʻānapanapa State Park's black-sand beach, or hike to the 400ft Waimoku Falls in the Kīpahulu end of Haleakalā National Park . 

Planning tip : If you're planning to visit Waiʻānapanapa State Park,  you'll have to book reservations , which can be made up to 30 days in advance. It costs $5 per person and $10 for parking per non-commercial vehicle.

5. Nāpali Coast, Kauaʻi

The towering green cliffs of the fabled Nāpali Coast rise 2000ft from the ocean and stretch 15 miles along Kauaʻi's rugged northern coastline. You can experience these verdant valleys and razor-edged cliffs aboard a catamaran, on a kayak, from a helicopter or along the 11-mile Kalalau Trail.

Planning tip : To get to Keʻe Beach , the start of the Kalalau Trail, you'll need to make advance reservations to enter Hāʻena State Park. It costs $5 for out-of-state visitors to enter the park, $10 for each car.

6. North Shore, Oʻahu

In winter – from November to February – some of the world's best surfers (and thousands of spectators) flock to Oʻahu's North Shore and its 7 miles of famous breaks, from Banzai Pipeline to Sunset Beach . Once in a while, the waves are big enough (consistently larger than 40ft, measured from the front of the wave) at Waimea Bay to hold the prestigious, invite-only Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitation. Summer brings calmer ocean conditions, great for swimming and snorkeling. The colorful beach town of Haleʻiwa features cute boutiques, eateries and the famous Matsumoto Shave Ice shop.

Detour : To get a bird's-eye view of this famous coastline, take the 2-mile ʻEhukai Pillbox hike. The trail climbs the side of the northern Koʻolau Mountains to WWII bunkers that offer panoramic views of the entire North Shore coastline.

7. Haleakalā National Park, Maui

Catching the sunrise at the top of Haleakalā, a dormant volcano that rises to 10,023ft above sea level, is one of the most popular activities on Maui. Reservations are required for sunrise – and the fee doesn't include entrance into the national park – and can be hard to get. Consider viewing the sunset instead and staying for the night sky. The park also has numerous hiking trails through otherworldly landscapes and the chance to see the endangered ʻāhinahina (silversword) and nēnē (Hawaiian goose), the state bird.

Planning tip : The park offers pristine dark skies – with minimal light pollution – perfect for stargazing. Temperatures can drop quickly at the summit, so dress warmly and bring layers. You'll also want to bring your own snacks, as there are no food or drinks available in the park.

8. Hanalei, Kauaʻi

On Kauaʻi's quiet north shore is the sleepy town of Hanalei , marked by emerald green mountains, kalo loʻi (flooded taro fields) and some of the island's best beaches, including the breathtaking Hanalei Bay with its historic pier. Browse art galleries and boutiques, eat fresh poke from Hanalei Poke and plant-based taro doughnuts from Holey Grail, and walk around a farmers market.

Detour : About 2 miles west of Hanalei Bay is Lumahaʻi Beach , made famous by the 1958 classic film South Pacific . This is where Mitzi Gaynor spent her time "washing that man right out of her hair."

9. Maunakea, Hawaiʻi Island

Maunakea , or "white mountain," is, at 13,802ft above sea level, the world's tallest mountain when measured from its base. (More than half, or 19,698ft, of Maunakea lies underwater, making it 33,500ft from base to summit.) It's considered one of the most sacred of all Hawaiʻi volcanoes and is known by Native Hawaiians as a region of the gods. It's also a hub of astronomical observation with more than a dozen massive telescopes from around the world. You can book guided stargazing tours with outfitters like Hawaiʻi Forest & Trail .

Detour : In April,  Hilo , which is about 30 minutes west of Maunakea, hosts the annual Merrie Monarch Festival , a competitive hula festival featuring some of the state's best dancers and performers. You have to book tickets in advance to attend the event, but the craft show, which is a huge draw, is open to the public.

10. Pearl Harbor, Oʻahu

Known for the 1941 attack on the USS Arizona , which launched the US into WWII, Pearl Harbor draws millions of visitors each year to the memorial erected in honor of the 1102 men who are still entombed in the metal hull of the battleship. You can catch a boat to the USS Arizona Memorial , tour the aircraft hangars of the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum , and stand on the decks of the "Mighty Mo" battleship where Imperial Japan formally surrendered in 1945. Pearl Harbor was once known as Wai Momi, or pearl waters, because of its abundant oyster beds.

11. Upcountry Maui, Maui

On the slopes of Haleakalā are the quaint towns of Kula and Makawao, collectively known as Upcountry Maui. Up here, the air is crispier, and the vibe is slower. Pick fresh strawberries in season at Kula Country Farms , wander around the fragrant Aliʻi Kula Lavender Farm , or feed goats at Surfing Goat Dairy. This area is famous for its paniolo , or Hawaiian cowboys.

Detour : Not many visitors know that grapes are grown here. Open since 1974, MauiWine produces wines made from estate-grown grapes, pineapples and raspberries. Visit its tasting room at the picturesque ʻUlupalakua Ranch.

12. Waimea Canyon, Kauaʻi

Called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," Waimea Canyon, with its buttes, crags and earthen colors, stretches 10 miles long, is 1 mile wide and is more than 3600ft deep. Stop at the Waimea Canyon Lookout for sweeping views of the canyon and the 800ft Waipoʻo Falls . But you can also experience the canyon via numerous hiking trails, on horseback and from a helicopter. Any way you see it, it's breathtaking.

Detour : The best trails are located within the 4345-acre Kōkeʻe State Park . The cost is $5 per person (nonresident) and $10 per car. From the park, you can stop at the Kalalau Lookout at 4120ft above the Nāpali Coast, with commanding views of the lush, amphitheater-headed Kalalau Valley. Camping is available, and the restaurant is worth a stop (but note: it only serves breakfast and lunch.)

13. South Kona, Hawaiʻi Island

Head south from Kailua-Kona, and you'll be in coffee country. This area – Kaʻawaloa (Captain Cook), Hōnaunau, Kāʻu – is known for its high-quality coffee grown exclusively in this high elevation and volcanic soils on the slopes of Hualālai Volcano. There are hundreds of farms here, and many offer guided tours and free tastings. Hōlualoa is a small artsy town with cute shops. Kealakekua Bay in the region of Captain Cook provides some of the island's best snorkeling. And Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is a sacred place of refuge that you wander on a half-mile walking tour.

Detour : In Keauhou, you can dive at night with the gentle manta rays that swim along this coastline. Seeing these graceful giants glide and twirl in the water with you is an experience you won't likely forget.

14. ʻIolani Palace, Oʻahu

Built in 1882 under King David Kalākaua, ʻIolani Palace in Downtown Honolulu is the only royal residence in the US. It took three years to complete at a cost of $343,595, with Hawaiʻi's first electric light system, flush toilets and intra-house telephones. The last two monarchs of the Hawaiian Kingdom – King Kalākaua and his sister and successor, Queen Liliʻuokalani – resided here until the overthrow of the kingdom in 1893. You can tour this American Florentine-style palace and see its throne rooms, dining rooms and the private living quarters of the royal family.

Detour : Walk to nearby Chinatown and browse the markets or eat at one of the many restaurants – ranging from Korean takeout to poke bowls to restaurants run by James Beard Award-winners and nominees – in this neighborhood.

15. Molokini, Maui

Three miles off shore from Wailea on Maui is Molokini Crater, known for its deep, crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. This crescent-shaped islet is a marine preserve, home to more than 250 species of tropical fish. The only way to get to this popular snorkeling and diving site is by boat.

Planning tip : While the boat ride out to Molokini is typically smooth, the journey back can be tumultuous. If you're prone to seasickness, either sit in the center of the boat where it's more stable or take some motion-sickness remedies.

16. Kailua, Oʻahu

A quick 15-minute drive from Honolulu, Kailua seems like a world away. The beach town is built around Kailua Beach , a powdery-white stretch of sand that runs 2.5 miles long. People fish, surf, kayak, swim and paddle canoes in these waters. Nearby Lanikai Beach , with its unobstructed views of the Mokulua Islands, is another popular stop for beach lovers. It's smaller and more secluded than Kailua Beach, but often more crowded because of its reputation for calm waters and gorgeous vistas. The town itself boasts popular restaurants, boutiques, local breweries and a great locally-owned independent bookshop called Bookends.

Planning tip : Consider exploring Kailua town by bike. You can rent one from The Bike Shop . (There's no city-run bike-sharing on this side of the island.) The shop has a range of cruisers, mountain bikes and road bikes for rent, complete with helmets and bike locks. Electra cruises – the most popular bikes – start at $18 for up to four hours. You can book online and pick it up at the shop.

17. Old Lahaina Lūʻau, Maui

Open in 1986, the locally owned Old Lahaina Lūʻau on Maui has been a favorite lūʻau for decades, showcasing traditional hula , music and food. It's located right on the ocean off Front Street in Lahaina with great sunset views. Tickets include live entertainment, an open bar, historical storytelling and chanting, and an all-you-can-eat buffet with Hawaiian staples like lau lau, kālua pig, poi and poke .

18. Hanauma Bay, Oʻahu

This protected nature preserve in East Honolulu is one of the best spots to snorkel on Oʻahu . About 400 species of fish inhabit this bay, along with honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) and the occasional endangered Hawaiian monk seal. There are restrictions for access to this popular bay: online reservations are required , and it costs $25 per person for non-Hawaii residents 13 years and older. Parking is another US$3 per car. The bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Planning tip : You can rent snorkel gear at the bay, so you don't have to lug your own. While you can walk down the steep road to the beach, you can also opt to take the free tram (we recommend that on the way back to your car).

Least known of all the Hawaiian Islands – and the smallest inhabited island – Lanaʻi is an ideal escape. Stay in luxurious resorts with world-class amenities fronting the beautiful and secluded Hulopoʻe Beach , a designated marine preserve filled with colorful fish and sometimes spinner dolphins. Or explore the rest of the island – the wild and windswept 8-mile Shipwreck Beach (complete with an actual shipwreck), the ancient fishing village of Kaunolū , or visit the strange landscape of Keahikawelo (Garden of the Gods).

Planning tip : If you want to venture outside the resorts of Lanaʻi City, you'll need to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle. There's no public transportation or ride-sharing on the island.

Best Hawaii family vacations for every type of traveler

Families trying to plan a tropical beach vacation might be considering Hawaii as their next destination. The good news is that a Hawaii family vacation offers something for everyone, regardless of age.

Jen Campbell Boles, founder of Explore More Family Travel , told TODAY Parents that Hawaii is a "perfect" family destination.

"The ease of traveling without a passport, yet being in a place nothing like the mainland is very attractive for a lot of families," Boles Campbell said. "It is a good first step for (American) families testing the waters of international travel, because it has that feel but still a sense of comfort by being a state where things operate much like wherever they are from."

Boles Campbell said Hawaii is a destination that offers many different experiences all in one place.

"(Families can enjoy) relaxing, swimming, surfing, hiking, sightseeing, nature, whale watching, snorkeling, farm visits, and my favorite — experiencing culture," Boles Campbell said. "Many hotels have programs that allow children to experience the culture through curated experiences for children." 

Laura Epstein,  SmartFlyer  travel advisor, agreed.

"Hawaii is a great spot for parents and kids to let loose and enjoy these new experiences together," Epstein said. "You can do as much or as little as you’d like."

"There’s a range of activities from zip lining, surfing and luaus all within walking distance, or a short shuttle ride away," Campbell Boles said. "Sometimes summer swells offer large enough waves to watch the surfers dance on the water."

Hawaii Island

A visit to Volcanoes National Park would be a must for families visiting the Big Island, or Hawaii Island.

"Even better if done via a helicopter," Epstein said.

Kaanapali Beach is a great place for families to stay, play, shop and eat.

"Whaler's Village offers some of the best places to eat on the island, including Leilani’s and Monkeypod, plus enough shopping that you would truly never have to leave," Campbell Boles said. "And activities such as snorkeling, parasailing and sunset cruises can be boarded right from the beach."

Ko Olina is just far enough away from the busy city life of Waikiki, but still close enough to get to for the day. 

"It has five protected ocean lagoons that offer a break from high surf and allow kids and parents to relax while floating and soaking up the sun," Campbell Boles told TODAY Parents.

Both Campbell Boles and Epstein advised taking the length of time you have to travel into consideration before booking a family vacation to Hawaii.

"Be sure you visit Hawaii for a long enough trip in order to adjust for jet lag, and allow enough time upon returning home for kiddos to recover from the time change," Epstein said.

Campbell Boles added that travelers with a longer stay in Hawaii should consider island hopping.

"If you’ve traveled from the mainland, take advantage of having traveled so far by exploring as much as possible," she said.

Traveling to Hawaii

Campbell Boles cautioned that Hawaii was a popular destination before the pandemic, but the Islands have experienced a surge of popularity since the start of the pandemic.

"Families wanting to travel to Hawaii now need to understand that it is busier than ever, so to adjust expectations, but also consider traveling during off season," she said. "Families with young kids should take advantage of not having to work around school schedules or families whose kids are in year-round school should take advantage of fall break."

While domestic travelers entering Hawaii no longer need to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, tourists visiting the Hawaiian Islands should take care to protect the fragile ecosystems that make each island so beautiful.

This can be done by:

• Keeping your distance (at least 50 yards) from animals like sea turtles and monk seals
• Using reef-safe sunscreen without ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which bleach reefs
• Staying on marked, legal trails

If you’re on a budget, Kihei is a great spot. It has budget-friendly condos that are cozy and close to the beach. This means you can have a great time without spending too much.

Right now, West Maui, which includes places like Lahaina , Ka’anapali , and Kapalua , is still getting back on its feet after some really big fires. So, some resorts there might not be fully up and running. Keep this in mind when planning your trip to Maui, and you’ll find a great spot for your family vacation!

It turns out, most of them don’t even cost much money.

There are several frugal activities that they can enjoy that are not only cheap, but provide enough entertainment to hold their interests.

Here’s a closer look at some free and cheap things for your teenager to do while visiting one of Hawaii’s islands.

Here are some of the top things to do in Hawaii with teenagers! Each of these are budget-friendly options too, so your vacation is fun and affordable!

Head to the Beach

Your family vacation has to include visiting the world-famous beaches on the Hawaiian islands.

Hawaii has countless gorgeous beaches to choose from, no matter what island you’re on.

It also can’t get any cheaper than heading to the beautiful beaches on the Hawaiian islands.

Teens will love sunbathing in the white powdery sand and then swimming in waters that are the color of topaz.

It’s also a great place to people-watch and intermingle with other people their age.

It’s a great place to visit on a rainy day and can be toured within 1-2 hours, as it’s not very big.

Laniakea Beach is also called “Turtle Beach,” and for good reason. This won’t be your typical beach visit.

1. Visit Honolulu’s Many Kid-Friendly Attractions

Honolulu is a bustling city with many family-friendly oceanfront resorts and attractions like the Honolulu Zoo , Waikiki Aquarium , Bishop Museum and Pearl Harbor . Plus, famous Waikiki Beach is one of the best places to learn to surf and paddle board.

2. Learn About Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is the site of WWII’s 1941 bombing attack and home to the USS Arizona Memorial . Tickets for the 75-minute USS Arizona Memorial program are free. However, there’s a limited number available each day.

The program includes a short video (with actual attack footage) and a round-trip boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, located above the remains of the sunken ship. The ship is the final resting place for more than 1,000 men.

Since Pearl Harbor is one of Oahu’s top attractions, it’s strongly recommended that visitors make advanced reservations online at www.recreation.gov .

There aren’t many places in the world where you can walk along a trail to the edge of a 300,000-year-old crater, but Diamond Head is one of them. A hiking trail leads to the summit for panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu.

Hawaii Island, also called the Big Island of Hawaii, has an array of diverse outdoor adventures suitable for the whole family. In fact, because the island has 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones, you’ll also experience a variety of terrain and weather. Explore beaches, waterfalls, cultural sites and coffee farms on the Big Island, which is home to two active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.

17. Visit Akaka Falls State Park

The Hilo Farmers Market  features over 200 vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, Big Island food products, tropical flowers and handmade craft items. It’s a great place to shop for picnic items to bring to the beach or back to your hotel.

19. Snorkel in Sunny Kona

The sunny Kona district is great for beach activities like snorkeling , paddle boarding and spotting dolphins and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles). One of Kona’s most unique adventures is the nighttime manta ray boat tour. It’s a magical experience to float on top of the water in a calm bay, with bright lights attracting the rays who swirl inches below.
