About this trip

Sacred Waters and Hidden Gems is a cultural tour and yoga retreat off the beaten path 

in and around the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Peru.  From highland lakes, to tropical waterfalls and glacial hot springs, we will explore the roads less traveled, guided by enthusiasts of traditional Andean culture and cosmology. This journey invites us to marvel at Incan and pre-Incan stonework and waterways dedicated to astronomical observation and agrarian practices, and enjoy the myriad of culinary delights Peru has to offer. It is a unique and colorful experience that aims to bring us closer to the water that sustains life, and to connect more deeply with our essence that knows the Earth to be sacred.

We'll admire sacred archaeological sites, colorful markets, breathtaking  scenery, and delve into the rich culture of the Quechua Indians, the  Inca descendants, in a very personal relationship with the land, the  people, and their customs. One event that makes the trip truly  unique is a visit to the traditional highland community of Amaru, where  we will participate in their communal workday, share a meal, enjoy  weaving demonstrations, music and dancing – a cultural exchange that  deepens the appreciation of Quechua history and social life.

Our hosts, Roman and Fielding Vizcarra, owners of the Pisac Inn and Peru Cultural Journeys , dedicate their lives to the celebration and promotion of traditional Andean culture. Meals are provided by the Pisac Inn’s restaurant Cuchara de Palo , celebrating the wealth of Peruvian Cuisine, and dedicated to organic, locally sourced and fresh ingredients. Peru’s ancient agrarian tradition resulted in an abundant diversity of products, full of flavors, colors and aromas that have won special recognition for Peruvian Culinary Art as one of the most exquisite and sophisticated on the planet.

Throughout our travels the yoga sessions will allow time for  reflection and integration of our incredible experiences, but if you or  your travel companion do not practice yoga, you can still join the tour and use the yoga time to spend at your leisure. The daily yoga practice ranges from an invigorating vinyasa sequence, to a restful, restorative session, depending on the other activities of the day and the needs of the group.

This Andean cultural journey combined with a yoga retreat sets  the stage for a profound cultural and personal experience. The woven itinerary, accommodations,  and meals celebrate the Andean perspective.  Our participation in this tour directly  supports sustainability of ancient, time-honored practices in the modern world.

• Accommodation 7 nights at the Pisac Inn, one night at the Eco-lodge in Santa Teresa.
• Meals The Cuchara de Palo Restaurant caters our pic-nic lunches and provides all meals at the Pisac Inn.
• Yoga Classes Sonya Luz Costanza guides the yoga classes.
• Ground Transportation On all of our excursions we will have a private tour van. Transportation from and back to the airport is also included.
• Entrance to Sites The price of admission to all archeological sites and hot springs is included.
• Guidance Through Sites We will have a professional guide to explain the history and significance of the agricultural terraces, intricate stonework, and astronomical observatories we'll visit.

What’s not included

• Airfare You are responsible for arranging your own air transport to Cusco. Arrive on the morning of May 3. We will pick you up in our private van from the airport or hotel in Cusco if you arrive earlier.
• Travel Insurance We strongly reccomend each passenger purchase travel insurance.
• Meals Eaten Out There will be 4 meals taken in restaurants outside the Pisac Inn.
• Spa Treatments Massage, herbal baths, and saunas at the Unucha Spa are not included in the tour price.
• Gratuities You may wish to tip the driver of our van, massage therapist, spa attendant, hotel staff, our guide, or others along the way.
• Personal Expenses There are many opportunities to buy local weavings and crafts directly from the artisans, and at the Pisac Market and stores in Cusco. Other expenses may include toiletries, extra snacks, or alcohol.
• Credit card fees If you choose to pay by credit card an additional fee will be applied. If you choose the option to pay directly from your bank there are no fees.

Take a morning flight to Cusco, the navel of the world, land in the heart of the Andes and be greeted at the Cusco airport to begin your journey. Enjoy a spectacular 45-minute scenic drive to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Outside of Cusco explore the pre-Columbian sacred spring of Tambomachay. You will be captivated by the introduction to Andean astronomy and sacred geometry, the foundation of Andean culture that will be expanded on each day of your journey. Revel in the striking beauty of the snow-topped peaks, mountainsides delineated by Inca terraces, and fields that cover the valley floor. Arrive to Pisac with lower altitude and small-town charm. Settle into your room at Pisac Inn and enjoy a cup of coca tea to help you acclimate. Savor your first in a series of delicious meals spun into a select set menu to explore the diversity and richness of Peruvian Cuisine. Take the afternoon to wander the cobblestone streets of Pisac on your own. Late afternoon yoga followed by evening reception and fireside dinner.

 After breakfast drive to the spectacular archaeological site above Pisac and admire the staggering agricultural terrace work among the most extensive in the area following the shape of the mountainsides in entrancing concave and convex forms as you walk to the central astronomical and ceremonial area which is widely acclaimed to be some of the finest stonework, comparable to that of Machu Picchu. This expansive site provides an ideal setting for a picnic lunch with magnificent vistas up and down the valley. Drive down to Pisac, or those who want to hike down can on their own. Spend an afternoon of exploring the open-air traditional Pisac market full of local crafts and experience the colorful traditional food section where locals buy and trade their produce. Enjoy a restorative yoga session and some down time before dinner.

 Breakfast is followed by a walk to visit Kusi Kawsay Andean School and the school’s organic farm, Kusi Ñan. Learn about this exceptional educational project and unique vision that honors Andean tradition combined with Waldorf Pedagogy, recently recognized with the UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development Award. Return to Pisac Inn before continuing with a short drive though the Sacred Valley to the mysterious archeological site Unu Urco, a perfect place for outdoor yoga where water is celebrated. Have a relaxing picnic lunch at site. Upon return to Pisac enjoy some down time before dinner.

Delight in a 45-minute drive into the majestic high Andes  to the sacred lake Quinscocha. Walk through the patchwork fields replete with potatoes, fava beans and corn to the traditional highland community of Amaru, where a genuinely authentic way of life is still practiced to this day. You will be welcomed with an endearing sweetness rarely felt in this day and age by this community that is consciously preserving and practicing their ancestral heritage. Through participation in a communal agrarian workday a beautiful cultural exchange unravels as you experience this incredible opportunity to step back in time and appreciate a quality of life with an admirable simplicity that is strikingly moving and profound. Enjoy a traditional lunch prepared with their prized agrarian products as the women begin to spin their naturally dyed wool. Others meditatively set up their back strap looms to share their ancestral weaving skills with us. This wonderful opportunity to purchase textiles directly from the weavers is not to be missed. Return to Pisac for a restorative yoga session and some down time before dinner. Dinner followed by an optional evening Coca Leaf Offering.  This unique opportunity to personally engage in an authentic Andean ceremony is an optional special event and is not included.

Enjoy an hour drive to Tipon, an amazing archeological site full of water channels that come from a natural underground spring. The Inca were brilliant engineers who integrated their architecture with the natural surroundings. Tipon, a 500- acre site built around a spring near Cusco, has been called their masterpiece of water management. Hike the site and find a perfect spot for open-air yoga and a picnic lunch. Tipon has beautiful stone terraces with fountains and irrigation channels that still function, which provides an endless, soothing soundtrack of running water. Return to Pisac for some downtime before dinner followed by festive music and dance with a local group of musicians, artists and visionaries who have dedicated their lives to preserving their Andean culture. This presentation honors the ritual Inca Agrarian calendar.

Dynamic yoga session before breakfast and a free day to book massages, sauna, and herbal baths at the Unucha Spa, and have some down time to reflect on your own, do some last-minute shopping, or take a hike to a nearby waterfall. Restorative yoga session before dinner.

Get an early start with dynamic yoga and breakfast before embarking on a spectacular five-hour drive through the Sacred Valley, up into the high altiplano, over a mountain pass, and down into the rainforest. Picnic lunch at the spectacular Mandor Waterfall before continuing to the town of Santa Teresa where we will stay the night.

Enjoy early morning yoga and a soak at the natural Colcalmayo hot springs of pristine thermal glacial water. After lunch enjoy a spectacular train ride, those going to Machu Picchu will get off in Aguas Calientes stay the night in preparation for an early morning. Those not visiting Machu Picchu continue to Ollantaytambo and return to Pisac Inn to depart to Cusco the next day.

Music aficionados have shared their ultimate travel bucket list, with Colorado's 'Red Rocks Amphitheatre', Detroit's 'Motown Museum' and London's 'Abbey Road' for Beatles fans taking the top spots.

A poll of 2,000 music enthusiasts revealed the top 20 must-see landmarks, including 'Paisley Park' in Minnesota, Prince's recording studio, the 'Las Vegas Sphere', and Cleveland's 'Rock & Roll Hall of Fame'.

Dollywood, a tribute to country music legend Dolly Parton, also made the list.

The study found that 38 per cent of those polled believe it's essential to visit these iconic venues at least once, with the average music fan having already visited two dream destinations.

The research was commissioned by beer brand Coors, who sent best friends Sam Thompson and Pete Wicks on a whirlwind 72-hour adventure to its birthplace, Colorado, to experience a concert at the famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

The pair faced a series of challenges across various locations, including tackling heights, rapids, off-roading and an open-mic night in Denver.

It all culminated in a final test at the iconic Amphitheatre where they enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime performance from GRAMMY-nominated Icelandic rockers, KALEO.

Sam Thompson commented: "When we were told Pete and I were being sent to Colorado I was over the moon. I had visions of us living our best cowboy lives and experiencing a true taste of the USA - which of course includes some great music."

"Taking part in these different challenges was so much fun, especially doing it alongside my best mate as this made the whole experience so much more worthwhile. There are some amazing music venues in the world, with Red Rocks definitely being one of them - it was truly epic."

The study showed that the key principles that contribute to create an exceptional gig-viewing experience include the venue (24 per cent), atmosphere (44 per cent), and crowd (12 per cent).

What's more, a sizeable 29 per cent of participants feel that the company one keeps plays a significant role in creating a memorable musical moment, with 38 per cent saying that going to a music festival or engaging in a similar experience can enhance relationships within friendships and families.

An impressive 89 per cent believe that being physically present at these events is pivotal for strengthening such ties, with a substantial 75 per cent asserting they prefer to immerse in the event without being on their mobile phones.

Interestingly, 20 per cent said music transports them back to the time they first met their partner. For an unfortunate, 19 per cent it can be associated with their first heartbreak, while for 13 per cent they pondered over a road trip taken with a close friend.

Helen Jones, a spokesperson for Molson Coors, commented on the journey of Sam and Pete, which is being shared across the company's social media platforms: "We believe fresh music experiences in unique locations adds another dimension to listening to live music which is more immersive and atmospheric."

Suspects in foiled attack on Taylor Swift shows were inspired by Islamic State group, officials say

VIENNA (AP) — Both suspects in a foiled plot to attack Taylor Swift shows in Vienna appeared to be inspired by the Islamic State group and al-Qaida, Austrian authorities said Thursday, and investigators found bomb-making materials at one of their homes. Officials said one of the two confessed to planning to “kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue.”

Three sold-out concerts were canceled Wednesday because of the plot, devastating Swifties from across the globe. Many of them had dropped thousands of euros (dollars) on travel and lodging in Austria’s expensive capital city to attend the Eras Tour shows at the Ernst Happel Stadium, which sat empty Thursday morning.

Europe is enamored with the American superstar: The German town of Gelsenkirchen renamed itself “Swiftkirchen” before its mid-July concerts.

Concert organizers in Austria said they had expected up to 65,000 fans inside the stadium at each concert and as many as 30,000 onlookers outside, where authorities said the suspects planned to strike. The foiled attack was planned for Thursday or Friday, according to Austria’s interior minister, Gerhard Karner.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer defended the decision to cancel the concerts, saying the arrests of the suspects took place too close to the shows, scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“I understand very well that those who wanted to experience the concert live are very sad,” Nehammer told a news conference Thursday. “Moms and dads are looking after their daughters and sons, who were full of enthusiasm and anticipation for this concert. But it’s also important that in such serious moments as now, it’s inevitable that safety comes first.”

Swift is also scheduled to perform at London’s Wembley stadium in five concerts between Aug. 15 and 20 to close the European leg of her record-setting Eras Tour.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said that while he understood Vienna’s reasons for canceling, “We’re going to carry on.” Khan said the capital’s authorities were prepared for shows there following lessons learned from a 2017 attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, that killed 22 people.

A suicide bomber had set up a knapsack with explosives in Manchester Arena. The bomb detonated at the end of Grande’s concert as thousands of young fans were leaving.

Last month, an attacker in England killed three girls and wounded 10 people in a knife attack during a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class. Swift at the time said she was ‘’completely in shock’’ over the violence.

In Austria, the main suspect confessed that he had started planning the attack in July, authorities said. The 19-year-old just a few weeks ago uploaded to the internet an oath of allegiance to the current leader of the Islamic State group.

He was “clearly radicalized in the direction of the Islamic State and thinks it is right to kill infidels,” said Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence.

Haijawi-Pirchner added that the suspect "wanted to carry out an attack in the area outside the stadium, killing as many people as possible using the knives or even using the explosive devices he had made."

During a raid of the suspect's home in Ternitz, south of Vienna, investigators found chemical substances and technical devices that indicated “concrete preparatory acts,” said Franz Ruf, director general for public security at the Ministry of the Interior.

Authorities said they also found Islamic State group and al-Qaida material at the home of the second suspect, who is 17. That suspect, who has so far refused to talk, was employed a few days ago by a company providing unspecified services at the venue for the concerts. The 19-year-old is an Austrian with North Macedonian roots. The 17-year-old is an Austrian with Turkish and Croatian roots.

The North Macedonian Interior Ministry released a statement Thursday saying that it had received a request from Austria to look into the 19-year-old.

Both teens were arrested Tuesday. Neither of their names was released in line with Austrian privacy rules.

The suspects had undergone clear social changes recently, authorities said. The 19-year-old had quit his job but said he “still had big plans,” while the other broke up with his girlfriend. Neither suspect appeared to have a ticket to any of the shows, Haijawi-Pirchner said.

Karner said that Austria's intelligence service had worked closely together with foreign intelligence services to capture the two teens. He did not identify the agencies, but added that the help was needed because Austrian investigators, unlike some foreign services, can't legally monitor text messages.

The CIA declined to say Thursday whether U.S. intelligence agencies played any role in the investigation. The U.S. State Department and the broader U.S. government have been in contact with Austrian officials about the alleged plot, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

No other suspects are being sought, though a 15-year-old who had been in contact with both suspects was also interrogated by police, Karner said.

“The situation is serious. But we can also say: A tragedy was prevented,” he said.

Concert organizer Barracuda Music said in an Instagram post late Wednesday that it had "no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.”

Barracuda said all tickets would be refunded. The same message was posted under the Vienna dates on Swift’s official website . Austrian rail operator OeBB in the meantime said that it would reimburse fans for unused train tickets for the concerts.

Swift has not spoken publicly about the plot or canceled shows. “Taylor Nation,” a verified Instagram page widely believed to be run by her team, reposted the announcement from Barracuda Music in a “story,” which is only visible for 24 hours. Her main account has not posted anything.

Swift’s biggest fear has always been that such large-scale violence could take place at her concerts, the superstar told Elle magazine in 2019 ahead of her Lover Tour, which was ultimately canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The attack at Grande’s concert, as well as a 2017 mass shooting at an outdoor country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip where 58 people were killed, worried Swift as she prepared to circle the globe.

“I was completely terrified to go on (the Lover Tour) this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months,” she told the magazine. “There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe.”

An official inquiry reported in 2023 that Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, didn’t act swiftly enough on key information and missed a significant opportunity to prevent the Manchester bombing, the deadliest extremist attack in the United Kingdom in recent years.

Terrorism expert Magnus Ranstorp, based at the Swedish Defense University in Stockholm, told The Associated Press by phone that any mass public event constitutes a potential threat now.

“So we shouldn’t be surprised that these extremely popular iconic popstars that attract a massive audience will also attract terrorists that want to create fear and destruction and mayhem," he said.

Russian Small Group Tour, June 2017

The St Regis hotel in Moscow was excellent; however, the Petro Palace in St Petersburg was 1-2 steps 'below' -- though it was centrally located.

Both guides (Moscow and St Petersburg) were excellent and found our Moscow guide knowledgeable about Russian history.

We enjoyed the tour very much. All included meals/restaurants and our welcome drinks were excellent. The St Regis was wonderful, however the Petro Palace, although comfortable, seemed a lower level hotel with its "budget" decor (especially the bathroom) however the staff were friendly and location was good. The itinerary on some days noted the time the guided tour would finish but actually finished sooner. What was nice was that there was a lot of free time available. I would have liked maybe a map and list of places of interests we may like to explore on our own and also a list of recommended local places to eat.
