Description

This travel system includes the Graco Modes Nest2Grow Stroller and the SnugRide 35 Lite Elite Infant Car Seat. A travel system allows you to move a sleeping baby from the car to stroller, and ensures your gear is effortlessly compatible.

The Graco Modes Nest2Grow Stroller grows from a single to double stroller with the addition of an infant car seat, Modes Carry Cot or Modes Nest2Grow Stroller Second Seat (each sold separately) for 15+ ways to ride.

It’s the only stroller you’ll need for a growing family, while still being a convenient size for first-time parents. The reversible seat can face you or the world, and it has a multi-recline for napping on the go. The one-step, self-standing fold makes transport and storage easier.

The Slide2Me height-adjustable seat offers three height positions to bring baby closer, while making extra room for the second seat. When converted to a double stroller, streamlined stacked seating provides a similar view for both children—and makes getting in and out easier.

Modes Nest2Grow also features a removable child’s tray with a cup holder, removable parent cup holder and expandable canopy with two positions for sun protection. A height-adjustable leatherette handlebar adds a stylish finishing touch.

The lightweight SnugRide 35 Lite Elite Infant Car Seat helps protect rear-facing infants from 4-35 lb and up to 32”.

Graco Modes Nest Travel System Review: Worth Your Money?

travel system graco modes

Graco Modes Nest Travel System Review: A Comprehensive Guide

Navigating the vast world of baby travel systems can be a daunting task for new parents. Today, I’m diving deep into one option that’s been the talk of the town: the Graco Modes Nest Travel System. This system promises to make outings with your little one a breeze, offering unparalleled versatility and convenience. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype.

travel system graco modes

🌟 Unpacking the Graco Modes Nest Travel System

First things first, this travel system is a jack-of-all-trades in the baby gear world. Graco has designed it to adapt to your growing child’s needs, from newborn snuggles to curious toddler explorations. With an aluminum frame and polyester fabric, it’s both sturdy and easy to clean, a win-win for busy parents.

The standout feature? Its Slide2Me seat adjustment. This allows you to bring your baby closer for those all-important face-to-face interactions, whether you’re navigating city sidewalks or taking a leisurely stroll in the park. The reversible stroller seat, which can face either the parent or the world, adds another layer of flexibility.

🚼 From Infancy to Toddlerhood: The 3-in-1 Design

Let’s break down the three modes this system boasts:

  • Infant Car Seat Carrier: The included Graco SnugRide 35 Lite Elite Infant Car Seat is a gem. It’s lightweight and engineered for safety, fitting infants from 4-35 lb and up to 32″.
  • Infant Pramette: For those early months, the stroller seat converts into a pramette, providing a cozy, flat surface for your baby to lie on.
  • Toddler Stroller: As your child grows, the stroller adapts, offering a spacious and comfortable ride for toddlers up to 50 lbs.

🛒 Graco Modes Nest Travel System Review – Features That Make Life Easier

The Graco Modes Nest doesn’t skimp on conveniences. The expandable extra-large storage basket is a lifesaver for storing all those baby (and parent) essentials. And let’s not forget the one-step, self-standing fold that simplifies storage and transport.

However, it’s not without its limitations. The fixed handlebar height might not be everyone’s cup of tea, especially for shorter parents. And while it’s a fantastic single-child solution, families with twins or siblings close in age might miss the ability to convert it into a double stroller.

📊 Graco Modes Nest vs. The Competition

To give you a clearer picture, let’s see how it stacks up against some of its rivals.

Table 1: Feature Comparison

Table 2: ease of use and convenience.

As you can see, each system has its strengths. The Graco Modes Nest shines in its versatility and ease of use, offering a great balance between functionality and cost. While it may not have the all-terrain capabilities of the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 or the luxury finishes of the Maxi-Cosi Zelia, it covers all the bases for a practical, everyday travel system.

🎯 Graco Modes Nest Travel System: Who’s It For?

The Graco Modes Nest Travel System is a fantastic choice for parents looking for a mid-range, all-in-one solution. It’s especially suited for those who appreciate the ability to keep their baby close and value the flexibility of a travel system that grows with their child. Urban and suburban families will find it meets their needs perfectly, offering a smooth ride on paved surfaces and easy maneuverability in tight spaces.

🚼 Ease of Use and Daily Handling

The Graco Modes Nest Travel System shines when it comes to ease of use—a crucial factor for busy parents. The one-step, self-standing fold is a game-changer, making it a breeze to pack up the stroller with one hand while holding your baby in the other. The height-adjustable seat feature is not just a convenience; it’s a thoughtful design that allows parents to keep their growing babies at the perfect height for interaction and engagement during strolls. This feature alone sets the Modes Nest apart from many competitors, underscoring its commitment to both parent and child comfort.

🛠️ Durability and Build Quality

Graco is known for its durable and reliable baby products, and the Modes Nest Travel System is no exception. With an aluminum frame, it strikes the right balance between lightweight design and sturdy construction. However, it’s important to mention that, like any product, it may show signs of wear over extensive use, especially if you’re navigating rough terrain regularly. That said, for city and suburban use, you’ll find it holds up well, offering a smooth ride with its quality wheels and suspension.

📏 Compactness and Storage

For parents who are space-conscious or often on the go, the compact fold and self-standing feature of the Graco Modes Nest are significant advantages. It fits well in most car trunks, and the expandable extra-large storage basket is a boon for shopping trips or long day outings, ensuring you have all your baby essentials within easy reach.

🔍 Table 2: Ease of Use and Convenience

Comfort for your child.

The comfort provided by the Graco Modes Nest cannot be overstated. With plush padding, multiple recline positions, and a large canopy, your child is in for a cozy ride, whether you’re just popping out to the store or on a longer adventure. The reversible seat feature allows your baby to face you for reassurance or face the world when they’re ready to explore.

Safety: A Top Priority

When it comes to your baby’s safety, Graco doesn’t cut corners. The included SnugRide 35 Lite Elite Infant Car Seat is testament to that, meeting or exceeding all US safety standards. It’s reassuring to know that the travel system you’re using has been rigorously tested to ensure your little one’s protection on the road.

Graco Modes Travel System Comparison

🆚 competitor comparison.

Graco Modes Nest stands its ground when compared with alternatives like the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 and the Maxi-Cosi Zelia. While each has its strengths, the Modes Nest offers a unique blend of affordability, versatility, and user-friendly features that cater to both infants and toddlers.

Table 3: Price vs. Key Features

💡 graco modes nest travel system reviews final thoughts.

The Graco Modes Nest Travel System offers an exceptional combination of versatility, convenience, and comfort, all while maintaining a reasonable price point. Its thoughtful design touches, like the height-adjustable seat and the one-hand fold, make it a practical choice for modern families. Although it may lack some of the high-end features or the double stroller capability of its competitors, its overall value is undeniable. For parents seeking a reliable, flexible, and user-friendly travel system, the Graco Modes Nest is a contender that deserves serious consideration.

travel system graco modes

In summary, the Graco Modes Nest Travel System stands out for its adaptability to growing children, ease of use for busy parents, and the balance it strikes between affordability and valuable features. It’s a travel system that grows with your family, making it a smart investment for those early years of adventure.

The Best Car Seat Stroller Combos

Best Car Seat Stroller Combo

Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.

When I was shopping for a car seat for my first child, the most important feature, aside from safety, was functionality. I wanted to make sure this car seat was not only easy to install, and to use, but that it also could easily connect to the stroller that I planned on using on the regular. That’s why I decided to go with a car seat stroller combo, also known as a travel system. This convenient and versatile solution allows parents to combine their car seat and stroller into a single integrated system they can use on the go.

What to consider when buying a car seat stroller combo

There are so many car seat stroller combos on the market today, as they’re one of the most popular options for parents looking for convenience. Here are a few pointers that can help guide you with your purchase.

Safety features

Safety will always be a top priority when it comes to buying any kind of a car seat—and stroller for that matter. You want to make sure that the car seat meets or exceeds the safety standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) . It should be made out of energy-absorbing foam, include side-impact protection, and have a five-point harness system.

Compatibility

The car seat and stroller you purchase need to be compatible to work. Some car seat stroller combos are sold together as a single package, including both the car seat and the stroller, while others allow you to mix and match products, sometimes even between two different brands. Just check to make sure that whatever products you purchase do, in fact, work together.

Ease of use

Installation and functionality doesn’t come easy for most parents, so try to find a car seat stroller combo that comes with easy-to-follow instructions for putting the products together and installing the car seat safely in your vehicle. Also, make sure that the stroller works on whatever terrain you intend to walk on the most, whether it’s smooth pavement or rugged trails.

Car seat stroller combos can get expensive. In fact, like cribs , they’re one of the big-ticket baby gear items you’ll purchase in preparation for your baby. While you want to ensure that your car seat stroller combo has all the bells and whistles, you can find options in your budget.

How to maintain and clean a car seat stroller combo

Maintaining and cleaning a car seat stroller combo can help ensure its safety, durability, and longevity. Be sure to read the car seat’s manufacturer’s manual, which usually has guidance on how to clean and maintain both the seat and the stroller. Regularly inspect the items for signs of wear, damage, or loose parts, as they can become compromised over time. Be sure to promptly clean spills and stains and remove fabric covers when necessary, many of which are machine washable.

Car seat installation options

When installing a car seat, there are several options available to ensure proper and secure installation. Here are some common car seat installation options.

Seat belt installation

Perhaps the most common method, the seat belt installation involves securing the car seat using the seat belt system that exists in your vehicle. Be sure to follow the car seat manufacturer's instructions so you use the appropriate securement to attach the car seat safely to your car. Check that the seat belt is locked in place according to your vehicle's instructions, either by using a locking retractor or locking clip.

LATCH installation

Many modern vehicles and car seats are now equipped with what’s known as the LATCH system. This consists of lower anchors and tether anchors built into the vehicle. To install a car seat using the LATCH system, locate the lower anchors in the vehicle seat and attach them to the car seat's lower anchor connectors. Tighten the straps to secure the car seat in place. If your car seat has a top tether strap, attach it to the tether anchor in the vehicle and tighten it to provide additional stability.

Vehicle installation systems

Some vehicles may have built-in car seat installation systems or features designed to facilitate easier and more secure installation. These systems may include proprietary connectors, guides, or indicators that help ensure proper positioning and alignment of the car seat. Check your vehicle's owner's manual for information about any specific car seat installation systems or features available.

Professional installation services

Not sure how to install the car seat? You can always seek out assistance from a certified child passenger safety technician (CPST)—trained professionals who can provide expert guidance and assistance with car seat installation. Your local fire or police department may offer this service and many car seat manufacturers offer free or low-cost car seat inspection and installation services conducted by CPSTs.

Safety guidelines for car seat stroller combos

Safety guidelines for car seat stroller combos are essential to ensure the safe transportation of your child. When using a car seat stroller combo, follow the key safety guidelines below as recommended by Gary Kirkilas , DO, a pediatrician and spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Choose a safe car seat stroller combo

Be sure to do your research to confirm the car seat meets or exceeds safety standards set by regulatory agencies such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the AAP. For secure installation, key features to look for include a five-point harness system, side-impact protection, and compatibility with your vehicle's LATCH system.

Install the car seat correctly

Follow the car seat manufacturer's guidelines as well as your vehicle's owner's manual to ensure proper installation of the car seat in your vehicle. Use either the seat belt or the LATCH system to secure the car seat according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Check the harness fit

Dr. Kirkilas notes that the harness should be at or below your baby’s shoulders—right around their nipple line. It should be so snug that you can’t pinch any excess material at the shoulders.

Use stroller safely

Make sure the car seat is properly attached to the stroller—this is often confirmed with a click. Follow the stroller manufacturer's instructions and avoid overloading the stroller with heavy bags or items that can cause it to tip over.

Regularly inspect equipment

Every now and then, inspect both the car seat and the stroller for loose screws, frayed straps, or other issues that may affect safety. If anything looks damaged, discontinue use and contact the manufacturer.

Follow age and weight limits

Age, weight, and height limits are in place for a reason. Transition to a different car seat or stroller when your baby outgrows the size or weight limits specified by the manufacturer.

How we selected the best car seat stroller combo

I combed through hundreds of reviews to find the best car seat stroller combos in every category. Here’s what I looked for when it came to the chosen travel systems in this story.

Top-notch features

In addition to durability, ease of use, and convenience, I also looked for car seat stroller combos that have additional features like folding mechanism, maneuverability, large storage baskets, cup holders, and adjustability. If a stroller was compatible with multiple car seats, that was a big plus.

Expert advice

I reached out to Dr. Kirkilas, who was able to provide me with expert insight about what to look for in a car seat stroller combo.

Customer reviews

In addition to speaking to real parents to find out which worked best for them, I also combed through hundreds of reviews from other parents who have purchased and used the car seat stroller combos. I paid close attention to feedback about durability, ease of use, safety, and overall satisfaction.

Checked for recalls

Before featuring any car seat stroller combo, I checked to make sure there weren’t any recent recall alerts issued by the manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is it better to buy a car seat and stroller combo.

If you plan to be on the go often with your baby in tow, a car seat and stroller combo might be the best option, as it allows you to seamlessly transition your child from the car to the stroller without needing to transfer them between different seats or devices. Daniel Ganjian, MD, FAAP , board certified pediatrician at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, explains that this option is more convenient, affordable, and might offer the most flexibility.

Can you mix and match strollers and car seats?

While it is possible to mix and match strollers and car seats, compatibility among different brands and models may vary. When mixing and matching, Dr. Ganjian recommends considering several factors to ensure a safe and secure fit, namely, that the two products are compatible, that you don’t have to purchase any adapters or accessories, any safety considerations that may be at play, as well as weight and size limits.

Is a parent-facing stroller worth it?

Whether you choose a parent- or front-facing stroller is really up to personal preference. While parent-facing strollers allow for close interaction and monitoring, they may limit your child's view of the surrounding environment, which may become an issue as your child gets into the toddler years and shows interest in the world around them. Some children may prefer facing forward to explore new sights and sounds. The cons of a parent-facing stroller, according to Dr. Ganjian, are they tend to offer less legroom for baby as they grow and they may not be ideal for bigger babies.

What car seat transitions into a stroller?

The Doona is great at transforming into a stroller, according to Dr. Ganjian, who used it for his own child. “The only problem is that it is heavier than a traditional car seat so you will need to use more strength,” he says. “It is not a good option for people who have a bad back.”

Why do you need a car seat adapter for strollers?

A car seat adapter for a stroller helps securely attach a compatible car seat to the stroller’s frame, creating a travel system that easily transitions between car and stroller, notes Dr. Ganjian.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

travel system graco modes

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

travel system graco modes

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

travel system graco modes

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

travel system graco modes

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

travel system graco modes

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

travel system graco modes

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

travel system graco modes

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

travel system graco modes

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

travel system graco modes

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

travel system graco modes

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

travel system graco modes

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
