Travel Guide: Samar (province)

Samar (formerly named Western Samar), is one of the three provinces of Samar Island in Eastern Visayas in the Philippines. Home to a network of amazing caves hidden beneath the region’s lush jungles, including the biggest cave system in the country, Samar is a rugged destination where adventure seekers can experience something out of the ordinary. Though most of Samar Island remains off-the-radar for local tourists, many international spelunkers have been drawn here since it’s been dubbed the “Caving Capital of the Philippines.”

Where is Samar province?

Samar province covers the west side of the mainland and islands in the Samar Sea. The province is bordered by Northern Samar (capital Catarman) and Eastern Samar (capital Borongan City).

The laid-back city of Catbalogan serves as the provincial capital of Samar province and is the best place to base if you want to explore Samar’s caves. Samar is connected to the island and province of Leyte (capital Tacloban) via the San Juanico Bridge, which spans the San Juanico Strait, the narrowest strait in the world.

How to get to Samar

There are flights from Manila to Calbayog City in Samar and Catarman, Northern Samar. However flights are usually more expensive and schedules are not as frequent. The more affordable way to get to to Catbalogan is via Tacloban City in the neighboring province of Leyte. From the Tacloban town proper, the land trip (by bus or van) takes approximately 2 -2.5 hours. Grandtours Vans are the most convenient since they go direct, but they only leave once all the passengers seats have been filled up. The buses stop to drop and pick up passengers along the way, so the trip may take longer. You can also get to Samar by taking the 2-hour ferry boat ride from Matnog, Sorsogon province to Allen, Northern Samar, which is another 3 hours away by bus from Catbalogan.

Cebu Pacific, Philippine Air Lines and AirAsia all offer flights from Manila to Tacloban . Cebu Pacific flies from Manila and Cebu to Tacloban and has direct flights from Cebu to Calbayog and Ormoc. Getting around Samar

Vans & buses:  The Eastern Visayas region is well-connected with a series of vans like GrandTours, DupTours and Van-vans, which ply regular routes between towns and provinces. Vans are the preferred mode of transport because they’re faster. Trip schedules are fairly regular for the major routes like Tacloban-Catbalogan. However, trips to some destinations may be harder to get to because vans don’t leave until all the seats are filled up. Trips on buses take longer and are less frequent.

Travel Time:

• Tacloban to Catbalogan – 2 hours (Grand Tours van)
• Catbalogan to Calbayog – 1.5 hours (Grand Tours van)
• Calbayog to Allen – 1.5 hours (Grand Tours van)
• Calbayog to Catarman – 1.5 hours (Grand Tours van)
• Catbalogan to Bornogan – 3.5 hours (Duptours van) – 4 hours (public bus)

Tricycles: Local tricycles, the colorful pedal-powered rickshaws, are the main mode of transport around Catbalogan. There are also motorized tricycles that go on longer journeys near the city. Unless you’re carrying heavy bags, you don’t actually need to ride to get around, because the town center is very compact and walkable. Fare is P5 per ride.

Bicycles: If you want to explore on your own or go further away from the town proper, you can also rent a bicycle. I was able to rent a mountain bike from Trexplore/Samar Outdoor Shop. Regular rate is P250/day.

Habal-habal:  Because of the road conditions, the jump-off point to some tourist spots (like Calbiiga Caves or San Jorge) are only reachable by habal-habal or sturdy motorcycles for hire. A lot of passenger motorcycles here are modified with roofs, which is very practical because of the frequent tropical storms that hit the region.

Boats: Passenger boats travel once a day to nearby islands like Daram Island, with fares ranging from P50-P100. If you want to go island-hopping or diving, you can charter your own boat. Prices are negotiable.

Motorcycle:  If you’re a solo traveler who knows how to drive a motorcycle and don’t want to rely on public transport, it’s pretty convenient to have one to get around. If you’re driving your own motorcycle, Samar is connected to mainland Luzon via the RoRo (in Allen, Northern Samar). From here, you can cross over to Leyte (Tacloban) and reach Mindanao via the Liloan Port in Southern Leyte.  There were no commercial motorcycle rental shops during my recent visit (September 2017), but I was able to rent a motorcycle through the help of Trexplore/Samar Outdoor Shop for P300/day to traverse Samar Island’s three provinces. Where to go / What to do in Samar

Calbiga caves.

Langun-Gobingob Caves  in the town of Calbiga is the largest cave system in the Philippines, reputed to be the second largest in Asia and the world’s third largest karst formation.

The most basic caving trip here is a whole-day affair. You can also opt to do more extreme 2-day to 3-day caving/camping trips. Get in touch with Joni Bonifacio of Trexplore / Samar Outdoor Shop for caving tours.

For beginners who want an intro to extreme caving, Lobo Cave is the best option. Highlights here include swimming in underground canyons, crawling through mud chambers and a scenic boat ride at the exit passing through mangrove forests and mussel fishing communities.

Central Cave

For the more hardcore adventurers, visit the rarely seen Central Cave, which requires an 18-meter descent on a rope to the main chamber.

Go Canyoning at Bangon Falls

Canyoning is another extreme sport you can do when you visit waterfalls in Samar. The most accessible waterfall circuit from Catbalogan City is Bangon Falls. Tours here, where you rappell and jump down a series of waterfalls, can be done on half-day trips.

Visit waterfalls

Samar has several waterfalls worth visiting, but Pinipisakan Falls in San Jorge, Samar is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen in my life. This remote waterfall is very challenging to get to as it requires a habal-habal ride, boat ride and 2-hour hike crossing remote areas.

Just beyond the waterfall is the entrance to Sulpan cave. (More on this adventure soon!)

A more accessible site that doesn’t require hiking is Blanca Aurora Falls, a local swimming spot in San Jorge.

There are several other waterfalls you can visit in other towns. Calbayog, dubbed the “City of Waterfalls,” is home to numerous waterfalls, including Bangon-Bugtong Falls . In Calbiga, you can visit Lulugayan Falls, a 50 meter wide waterfall.

Sohoton Cave and Natural Bridge Park

The most popular tourist destination in Samar (and ironically the one I haven’t been to because it’s expensive for a solo travelers) is Sohoton Cave and Natural Bridge in Basey. Going here involves a river cruise and hike through stone arches and karst formations with options to rent kayaks. Rates vary according to the number of pax (better for big groups).

Ulot River Torpedo Boating

Ulot River is the longest river on Samar Island and used to serve as the navigational highway before there were paved roads connecting the province of Samar to Eastern Samar. Similar to whitewater rafting, the Ulot Torpedo Boat Extreme Ride takes you through the river downstream and upstream. At the end point, you can jump in the water and get carried by the current.

Marabut Island Hopping

Marabut is an isolated retreat with natural rock formations in the town of Marabut. You can visit the various rock formation by island-hopping. You can also try free solo climbing on some formations. I really hope to visit this next trip.

Samar Island Natural Park

The Samar Island Natural Park comprises the largest contiguous lowland tropical rainforest in the Philippines. With a total area of about 333,000 hectares, the SINP straddles the whole island of Samar and its three provinces. It has one of the biggest limestone formations in the country, with caves in limestone karst, many still unexplored.

Along the Taft-Paranas road, a few meters from the jump-off point for the Ulot Torpedo adventure, you can visit the Samar Island Natural Park Resort, which has a family-friendly swimming pool.

Payao Beach

A small public beach resort near the highway in Brgy Payao that’s popular with locals. It’s one of the nearest beaches to you can reach from Catbalogan and is reachable by a 30-45 minute bike ride. Nice view of the sunset here.

Daram Island

Daram Island is an island municipality reachable by 30-minute to 1 hour boat ride from Catbalogan. Mountain ranges occupy the major portion of the island which is fringed by humble coastal villages. The main landmark near the island is a Sto. Nino statue on a rock. Locals say there are several rock formations, but getting there requires longer travel time.

City attractions

Some landmarks of interest around Catbalogan City that you can easily walk to include the Samar Provincial Capitol, Obelisk Tower, Catbalogan Church, Plaza Pieta, and the Pier. Here ‘s an extensive list of some Catbalogan City tourist spots .

Where to stay

If you’re doing any adventure tours, it’s convenient to stay in Trexplore Guesthouse / Homestay, which offers several guestrooms, unlimited WiFi plus you get all the insider info you need to plan your trip. The fan room with common CR costs P200 a night, while the air-con room with private CR  costs P1000/night (good for groups).

For budget travelers, San Roque Lodge offers Ordinary Rooms (fan, common CR) for P150/night and Air-conditioned rooms (with cable TV, toilet & bath) for P600/2 persons.

GV Hotels in the Municipal Plaza, Behind Catbalogan City Hall (Tel. : +63 55 543-8011) offers basic budget aircon rooms, with promo rates for P600/night.

Other hotels in Catbalogan are San Francisco Hotel, Fortune Hotel, Summer Garden Pension House, First Choice Hotel, and Maqueda Bay Hotel. Here’s the contact info. of some places to stay in Catbalogan .

Where and what to eat in Samar

Tahong or mussels are a major industry in the town of Jiabong and they’re used in a lot of interesting street food around Catbalogan. During my most recent visit, I came Tahong BBQ being sold in New Romantic Canteen, a stall across Van-Vans terminal in the downtown area. It just costs Php 5 per stick and is really good!

You can also find Tahong Lumpia (P20 for 7 pcs) and Tahong Balls, deep-fried breaded tahong similar to fish balls but with mussel meat (P5 for 3 pcs) in stalls across the plaza near the Provincial Capitol.

Tina’s Garden is a local favorite serving Halo-Halo (P38). Be sure to try their Puto Ligong made of black glutinous rice.

Crabs are a local specialty in the islands and in some districts like Santa Margarita and Daram Island. Tamalos  is a specialty packed with slivers of liempo (pork belly) and chunks of soft fat cooked with rice flour in a spicy, rich peanut sauce.

Binagol is a local specialty made of grated talyan root (a type of root crop similar to taro) steamed in a coconut shell and wrapped and tied in banana leaves. Binagol is mixed with coconut milk, condensed milk, sugar and cooked like a sticky cake. It’s a popular souvenir item that you can find in terminals and street corners in downtown Tacloban.

Cafe Maria Rosario on Rizal Avenue serves rice meals, burgers, pizzas, coffee and some cakes. Pleasant atmosphere and WiFi. They also sell traditional Samar delicacies packaged by Charito’s Delights.

Another notable restaurant is Green Hub near the plaza, which serves affordable combo meals highlighting locally produced veggies. They have good shakes and kinilaw.

Other restaurants recommended by locals are City Grill Restaurant, 103 Bar Restaurant and Maria’s Restaurant. There are numerous sidewalk stall eateries serving barbecue and other skewered meats (hotdogs, chorizo, isaw, pig ears), and puso (rice in leaves). For an authentic local meal, you can go tot he market and try their specialty paluto tinola.  There are also a few fastfood joints around town including Jollibee. 

What to buy

Charito’s Delights Fastfood and Pasalubong Center along San Roque Street sells a wide range of traditional Samar delicacies.

Bestsellers include corioso (crunchy butter cookies), torta (an ensaymada-like cake), roscas (sugar sprinkled cookies), Delicias de Pili, Hopia de Pili, Polvoron de Pili, & Ube Pastillas. Similar delicacies are also sold in the GrandTours terminal station where you will need to ride going back to Tacloban.

The Pasalubong Center right under the Tourism Office beside the Provincial Capitol Complex also sells interesting souvenir items like jars of Adobong Tahong (P120), Tahong Crackers (P15/small bags) and woven products from the town of Basey.

Thank you for that. I am a Calbayognon and somehow it saddens me that my hometown is not recognized albeit the good tourist attractions. Our city is actually named The City of Waterfalls. We have spectacular beaches too, where you can just unwind and watch the sunset.

I apologize for that as I was based in Catbalogan during my visit, but the title of the post is “Western Samar” since most people search for information on what to do in a province. Like most “travel guides” (for lack of a better term), I realize that the information here is very incomplete and is based only on the activities I was able to do, but I hope that the tips help those who are planning to visit. I’m trying my best to feature more off-the-beaten path destinations in the country deserving attention so that people will have other alternatives to the usual party places. I hope to visit Calbayog and other regions of Samar like Biri and Guian soon.

Hello! Is there any way to get some of the Corioso cookies from Charitos Delights shipped to the USA? I would love to have them shipped in the original boxes with the name Corioso on them. My grandfather was from Visaya and the only record I have for a home town is “Lebronana”, or something to that effect, from his military discharge papers. Always wondered where the family name originated and whether he told the absolute truth to the officials in Hawaii in 1904 when he immigrated there.

I visited Calbayog in 1994, bought one of the Lonely Planet travel guides and it said the best to stay was the Seaside Inn, if it was the best don’t want to see the worst. Imagine they have nicer places to stay now but that was a cockroach nightmare, also scorpions. I sprayed my room with 2 cans of cockroach spray bought at local store and ran my neighborhood family away killed most of the roaches (had to sweep them up) but evidently ran many of them across the hall. Little restaurant downstairs was not fit to eat so I ate in town for the 3 days I stayed there. Someone tells me its better I may consider going back.

Appears that Catbalogan is closer and I prefer the shortest ride. Girl wants me to fly to Calbayog and pick me up at the airport but I’m not crazy about staying in hotel in Calbayog since had a bad experience there before. Its the only place she is familiar with but perhaps I can tell her how to get to Catbalogan. I’ve stayed at Tacloban Plaza Hotel couple of times, its nice but appears to be a long boat ride to and from Daram and I’m not up for long boat rides.

Hi Moon, sorry to hear about your bad experience there. I haven’t been to Calbayog myself (as I stayed in Catbalogan), but I’m sure things have improved there since your last visit over 20 years ago. You might find this article on Calbayog useful.

Hi Moon, from what I remember the regular boat ride (passenger boat) from Catbalogan to Daram island took about 2 hours or more because of the loading times and stops made in other villages of the island. Going back, I paid a smaller fishing boat where I was the only passenger and it took about 45 minutes from Daram to Catbalogan. I have no idea how long it would take from Calbayog City or if boats depart from there. I think the safest bet would just be to stay in Calbayog if you don’t want the hassle of a long boat ride. There are more options now for hotels there. Just check the reviews on TripAdvisor .

Hi Joey. I believe that the photo of “Dacut Beach in Calbiga, Samar” which was posted in I Love Samar’s FB page and has been circulating online was misleadingly captioned by the page administrator in order to gain page likes. According to locals, there is no such beach there. The photo they posted is a resort in Bora Bora island. Samar has a lot of beautiful rugged destinations, but that beach is not one of them.

I read your site with interest. I am based in London but my wife comes from Burgos, halfway between Catbalogan and Babatngon. We are building a family house in Burgos, which is next to Bacsal Island. We want to bring more tourists to the area, which will help the locals, so we plan to rent it out. We will be there in June for the house blessing. The family in Burgos also have a large boat which will also be included when someone stays at the house. My details are on face book

I believe the resort you are referring to is the Dacut Buwa Beach Resort, Caliga.

I haven’t been to Samar since 1993 at that time I traveled the entire West Coast staying in Tacloban (Leyte), Catbalogan, Calbayog, Alan and Catarman, The entire west coast is just beautiful. For the record there are some beautiful beach resorts in Northern Samar also.

Do Buses/Vans going to Catbalogan from Tacloban run 24/7?

Hi Angela. I think Grand Tours has hourly departures by van, but only during the day. Earliest is 5:00 am and last trip is 6:00 pm. Not sure about buses.

We’ve been to and experienced Joni’s waterfalls, canyons, and caves. All of them are fascinating, but there are still so many beautiful places in Western/Central Samar! We’re excited to explore them. 🙂

Hi Joy. I compiled this guide from three separate visits to Samar province. Collectively, I probably spent more than a week in Samar province alone. It takes at least 1 day to visit every cave because of travel time and hiking involved. Actually, a lot of the activities are suited for those who like extreme adventures, though Trexplore has had clients as young as 8 years old (mostly kids of foreigners who are really into caving). The most kid-friendly activities I could recommend would be the Torpedo Boat in Paranas and maybe Lobo Cave if you want to try something different.

There’s so much untapped tourism potential in the Northern and Eastern Side of the province. No wonder so many caves remain unexplored!

Hello. If you mean Ubanon, that’s relatively near the Catbalogan City center. I recommend Trexplore guesthouse for P200 a night. Please see the “Where to Stay” section of the article. If you look at Googlemaps, there’s a hotel named Villa Josefa along the highway in Ubanon.

How to Get to Samar Island

• From the port, walk to Ormoc City Terminal near the Ormoc Public Market/2go Express ticketing.

How to get around Samar Island

1.By Habal-Habal or known as Motorcycle

Good for couples. It is much better if you can drive it yourself.

It can accommodate up to 10-13 passengers . If you want to rent tour the island using the van, it will costs you around Php 2000-2500 or $40-50 per day .

3. By Multi-Cab

It can accommodate up to 8-10 passengers . If you want to rent tour the island using the multi-cab, it will costs you around Php 1500-1700 or $30-34 per day .

Should I book my Samar Island Hotel Online?

My answer will always be YES . You can save money by checking discounts online. Booking before you leave also saves you time & avoids the hassles of bringing large amounts of cash during your actual trip.

What to prepare for a trip to Samar Island?

Sunblock — If you don’t have a plan in getting yourself tan, then bring some sunblock to protect your skin from the suns UV rays.

Hats and Eye wear  — Protect your eyes from the heat of the sun.

Cellphone Waterproof Case  — You don’t want to drench your phone w/ saltwater.

Rent a GoPro – If you are in Cebu, my friend can rent you one here .

Food – Although there is a convenience store in the island, it is much better to bring your own foods and drinks.

Powerbank & Batteries – Electricity on the island only runs from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM

Get a good map and explore the city on your own tour  — You can tour the city at your own pace plus you can choose from a variety of options. There are a lot of awesome things to do in Camotes Island that don’t cost a dime.

Drive a motorcycle  — This is the cheapest way to get around.

The Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge Park is an 841-hectare protected natural area and tourist attraction inside the Samar Island Natural Park. The natural park includes caverns, subterranean rivers, waterfalls, limestone structures, dense vegetation, and a natural stone bridge.

Just a few meters from the Sohoton Cave, you can already reach the Sohoton River by kayaking. Talk about hitting two birds with one stone!

The centuries-old St. Michal the Arcangel Church, set on a hill, is one of Samar’s most beautifully maintained churches. The bell tower on the church’s left wing is one of its most notable features.

The San Juanico Bridge connecting the provinces of Samar and Leyte is one of the monumental projects under Former President Ferdinand Marcos’ administration. The bridge is an arch-shaped truss bridge,

It is known to be the longest bridge in the Philippines spanning a body of seawater with a length of 2.162 kilometers (1.34 mi) and a width of 10.620 meters supported by 43 spans.

The name of the attraction is taken from the San Juanico strait, where the San Juanico Bridge is located. San Juanico Bridge is the Philippines’ longest bridge, measuring approximately 2.16 kilometers in length, and connects two major islands, Samar and Leyte. The municipality of Sta. Cruz is located on the other side of the bridge, namely on the Samar side. Rita can be found.

Balantak Falls is located in Rawis, a barangay next to Sohoton. This waterfall is made up of three water falls. You may also hike to the falls. Its chilly and flowing waters are ideal for soothing and massaging fatigued muscles. Going to Balance Falls takes time, but when you see the water falls, you will realize that it was well worth the effort. You can also ride a habal-habal to Balantak.

• Trekking Time: 2 hours

Pinipisakan Falls, with its stunning and breathtaking scenery, is one of Samar’s most gorgeous tourist destinations. It is divided into four strata by refreshing rivers that emerge from lush jungles upstream.

The natural pool of the falls reflects the pale green hue of the forest, and one couldn’t help but jump from one of the rocks and have a refreshing dip.

Despite its remoteness, Pinipisakan Falls is one of Northern Samar’s most renowned tourist destinations.

Saob Cave in Basey, Samar, was formerly home to hundreds of banig weavers, known as paraglara in the local dialect. Weavers, primarily women, would throng the whole length of the cave’s vast chasm, and the walls would reverberate with laughing, loose conversation, and the rustle of dry grass under delicate fingers.

• Fee:  Php 1,800 a boat for five pax
• Boating Time:  45 minutes

The Ulot River is the best place for anyone seeking a thrilling canoe trip known as the Ulot Torpedo Boat Extreme Ride.

Expect bumps and humps as the boat brings you to the river’s fierce rapids, which terminate at Deni’s Point. You may enjoy a picnic here and swim in the cold, clear water.

There are several large rocks, and you may attempt leaping or diving from one of them into a deep section of the river.

10. Caving at Langun-Gobingob Cave

• Location/Jump-off:  Brgy Panayuran, Calbiga
• Tour Packages:  Php 3000/head for one day, Php 10 000/head for three days

Langun-Gobingob Cave has the greatest karst in the Philippines, and the cave system is one of the largest in Asia. However, it is only recently that both local and foreign visitors have begun to visit the aforementioned cave.

There are beautiful rock formations within, such as massive columns. Within are bats and other species.

• Location/Jump-off:  Brgy Literon, Calbiga
• Trekking Time:  30 minutes – 1 hour

Lulugayan Falls, often known as the Philippines’ “Mini-Niagara Falls,” is one of Samar’s most famous tourist attractions. It looks like a massive curtain flowing over a window.

The waterfall is also surrounded by dense jungles. Its crystal-clear waves excavated deep pockets of the pool where you may relax and swim. Climb one of the boulders and leap into the pool’s deepest area.

But be sure you know how to swim. In the meanwhile, there are cabins where you may picnic and prepare your meals.

• Location/Jump-off:  Brgy Osmena, Marabut

The Marabut Marine Park in San Pedro Bay is home to various limestone rock formations, some of which tower more than 30 meters high and have their own vegetation.

In contrast to the blue water, they resemble floating islands. If you’re an experienced diver and swimmer, you can attempt jumping from one of them. When you’re done with them, you may go to a 16th-century lighthouse on an islet.

You’ll get a beautiful glimpse of the surrounding seascapes as well as encounter several types of birds.

13. Immerse your Brain in History at Samar Archaeological Museum

• Location/Jump-off:  Calbayog City

The Samar Archaeological Museum is a well-known cultural tourism attraction in Samar. The museum, located among Samar’s best beaches, houses a diverse collection of historical and cultural objects such as burial jars, Chinese porcelains, religious figurines, and log coffins with skeleton remains.

• Location/Jump-off:  Calbayog City
• Trekking Time:  30-40 minutes

Tarangban Falls is one of Samar province’s lesser-known tourist attractions, although it deserves further research and recording. It has numerous layers that cascade on top of each other.

The waterfall is hundreds of feet tall, making it one of the tallest in Samar and the region.\

• Location/Jump-off:  Lavezares, Biri
• Boat Ride:  20 minutes

Biri Island is located in northern Samar. It has breathtaking rock formations such as Magasang, Bel-at, Magsapad, Caranas, Macadlaw, and Puhunan.

You can go exploring and take Instagrammable photos if you want. Other popular activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, surfing, and paddle-boarding.

• Location/Jump-off:  Capul Island

During the Spanish period, the Capul Lighthouse was erected to warn the residents of oncoming invasions by pirates or plunderers. It is a well-known historical tourist destination in Samar.

Apart from its historical significance, it provides a spectacular view of the seas and the cliff. A picnic area is available near the lighthouse for visitors.

17. Sightseeing at Biri Island Rock Formation

• Location/Jump-off:  Biri Island
• Boat Ride:  20 minutes

Biri Island Rock Formation is more than only its beautiful beaches and lovely bathing waters. It also has massive rock formations known locally as Magasang, Bel-at, Macadlaw, Magsapad, Pinanahawan, and Puhunan.

Because of the massive size of the rocks, the island is also known as the “battleground of the gods,” and it offers tourist activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing.

• Location/Jump-off:  Laoang

Onay/Unay Beach is located on the northeastern coast of Northern Samar and is one of the more remote tourist destinations. Enjoy trailing on the golden beach sand while staring out at the sea’s beautiful and quiet ocean.

Two enormous boulders may be seen on one end of the beach. You may leap from one of them into a deep portion of the water for an exciting experience. Simply ensure that you know how to swim.

• Boat Ride:  30 minutes

Dalupiri Island has a lengthy stretch of white beaches that compliment rows of palm trees. There are several lodging options available. Aside from swimming in the clear seas, visitors may go snorkeling.

A marine sanctuary on the other side of the island is home to a variety of animals. When you see these, you will be taken aback.

Acapulco Beach is one of Northern Samar’s burgeoning tourism destinations. Because of its immaculate condition, both locals and foreign tourists enjoy visiting here. Its coastline features both grayish and white beaches, and the sea is rich in marine life and coral reefs.

• Location/Jump-off:  Biri

Belat Pool is well-known in the area for its crystal-clear waters and stunning rock formations. It is appropriate for both diving and swimming. Because of the calm waters, even bachelors can learn to swim here. Just keep an expert swimmer on the lookout at all times.

• Location/Jump-off:  Sila Island, San Vicente Island

Pink Beach is a renowned tourist destination in Northern Samar. Unlike Boracay’s white, powdery dunes, the sands here are truly pink! Who wouldn’t be smitten by such an amazing landscape?

In addition to the pinkish sands, the seas here are crystal clear and teem with marine life, including coral reefs.

• Location/Jump-off:  Gamay town

Swimming in Matikawol Falls’ wide pool will provide you with long-lasting refreshment due to its chilly and crystal-clear waters.

Locals report that because the waters are in such good condition, tourists may recover from common ailments, particularly colds. The waterfall is surrounded by lush woodlands, creating a spectacular scene.

• Location/Jump-off:  Lawaan

Ban-awan Falls is one of the most distant tourist destinations in Eastern Samar. However, both residents and tourists continue to visit because of the breathtaking scenery provided by the tallest falls in the region.

It pours down a steep cliff surrounded by lush vegetation. Before reaching the waterfall, expect to go through forests and cross brooks.

25. Another one for Cave Enthusiasts – Linao Cave

• Location/Jump-off:  Sulangan Island, Guian

Linao Cave is one of Eastern Samar’s lesser-known tourist attractions. However, it is a prospective destination that might propel the local community into the spotlight of ecotourism.

If you’ve heard of the famed Enchanted River in Surigao, you’ll recognize Linao Cave. It is located deep in the bush, giving it a strange appearance. Linao Cave’s waters are similarly crystal clear and blue.

• Location/Jump-off:  Brgy Lalawigan, Borongan City

With its pure white beaches, lush woods, and stunning rock formations, Divinubo Island is a promising ecotourism destination. A boat ride around the island will reveal various marine caves, tidal pools, and lagoons. A lighthouse perched on a mountaintop overlooks the wide Pacific Ocean.

• Location/Jump-off:  Apiton Island, San Policarpo

Apiton Island is one of Eastern Samar’s most potential tourism destinations. Beautiful blue lagoons, tidal pools, and beautiful rock formations may be seen here.

Some of the rock formations tower many meters above the ground. Experiment with leaping or diving from one of these into deep waters. Simply ensure that you know how to swim. If you have the time, hire a guide to explore the deep woodlands.

Homonhon Island is a well-known historical tourist destination in Eastern Samar. On March 16, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan arrived at the first island on his journey around the world.

More than that, Homonhon Island is a natural paradise with kilometers of white sand beaches.

• Location/Jump-off:  Calicoan Island

Calicoan Island Beach, also known as ABCD Beach, is a popular tourist destination in Eastern Samar. The beach is located on the Pacific Ocean, which allows for larger waves.

As a result, the island is one of the top surfing spots in the Philippines. You may relax on the sandy beach or try jumping/diving from one of the cliffs into a deeper portion of the water.

30. Stroll around Canjuway Nature Park

• Location/Jump-off:  Canjuway,  Borongan

Canjuway Nature Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts and spiritual seekers alike. The park, tucked away in a distant location, gives you the impression that time has stopped.

Consider sitting on one of the many rock formations and staring out at the roaring waves and boundless ocean. That’s how it is around here.

31. Makati Island

• Location/Jump-off:  Sulat, Eastern Samar

Makati Island is known for its white sand beaches and crystal-clear seas. The beach is lined by coconut palms. Makati Island, like many other islands in Eastern Samar, is less touristic, making it ideal for people seeking a rural escape.

• Location/Jump-off:  Balangkayan

Minasangay Marine Eco-Park is one of Eastern Samar’s burgeoning tourism destinations. Locals and international visitors alike enjoy the verdant woods, coconut plantations, mangrove forests, and rock formations on the shore.

The Philippines’ biggest contiguous stretch of old-growth rainforest is found at Samar Island National Park. The park, which spans over 333,300 hectares, is home to unique and endangered species, making it a biological hotspot.

Some of Samar’s most renowned sites, such as the Sohotan Natural Bridge National Park, are also included in the park. Much of the park has been logged over time.

Fortunately, more community-based initiatives are emerging to safeguard the park while advocating for community-based development through ecotourism.

34. Swim at Belat Pool

• Location/Jump-off:  Biri

Belat Pool is well-known in the area for its crystal-clear waters and stunning rock formations. It is appropriate for both diving and swimming. Because of the tranquil waters, even bachelors may learn to swim here. Just keep an adept swimmer on the alert at all times.

35. Spelunking at Lobo Cave

• Location/Jump-off:  Brgy Tagbayaon, Jiabong

Lobo Cave is a well-known tourist destination in Samar. Fairies (called enkanto in the local tongue) are said to inhabit the cave. When you arrive, ask a local tour guide about the cave, and you’ll learn a lot about it.

Inside, there’s a gigantic stalagmite structure that looks like a fabled angel. An subterranean river and cascading waterfalls may also be found in Lobo Cave.

Calicoan Island is located a few kilometers off the mainland of Samar. It is ideal for individuals who like less touristic areas. There’s nothing like it if you’re an introvert like me.

Imagine laying on the beach and staring out at the calm waters, waving palms, and unspoilt white beaches. You’ll also have a sense of belonging here because the people are nice and welcoming.

37. Little Palawan or Kandiwata island

• Location/ Jump-off: Daram, Samar Province, Philippines.

Kandiwata Rock Formation, or Kandiwata, is a rock formation in the municipality of Daram, Samar Province, Philippines.

This tourist attraction is known as Samar’s “Small Palawan” because it features rock formations that will transport you to Palawan. Some people say it was named Kandiwata after the deities and spirits that formerly lived there.

Guiuan Travel Guide: Samar’s Southern Frontier

On the southernmost tip of the island of Samar is the town of Guiuan, one of the most underrated destinations not only in Visayas but in the entire country.

The town is among the areas most devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda in 2013 where numerous life and properties were lost including its icon, the centuries-old Immaculate Concepcion Church which was put into rubble but  just recently restored.

Since then, the town of Guiuan has stood up and moved on. Its natural attractions and raw beauty are drawing tourists to visit the lovely town.

Guiuan’s most popular spot is Calicoan Island, known for its long stretch of white beach ideal for surfing and a forest dotted with hidden lagoons, caves and natural pools.

How to Get to Guiuan

From tacloban:.

The nearest commercial airport to Guiuan is Daniel Z. Romudez of Tacloban City, Leyte. Philippines Airlines, Air Asia Philippines and Cebu Pacific have daily flights from Manila, Clark, Cebu and Davao to Tacloban City.

In Tacloban, proceed to van terminals (Van-van or Duptours) or in the Tacloban Transport Terminal. There are numerous departures daily of vans and local buses going to Guiuan from as early as 4AM to as late as 5PM. The most convenient way is to take a van for at least 2.5 hours of travel time with regular fare of P160/person.

BOOK YOUR BUS FROM TACLOBAN TO GUIUAN

From Borongan:

There are also vans and local buses from Borongan City going to Guiuan. The most convenient is by taking a Duptours van that travel for about 2 hours, regular fare is P110/person. There are four departures daily – 5AM, 9AM, 1PM and 5PM.

From Calbayog and Catbalogan:

From Calbayog City, there is one departure daily of a direct bus to Guiuan at around 10AM. The same bus passes bt Catbalogan City. Travel time from Calbayog to Guiuan is around 5 hours.

Alternatively, you may catch a van to Tacloban or Borongan and transfer to another van to Guiuan.

Just like myself back in 2018, you probably scored a promo fare going to Tacloban without knowing what to expect in the city or province. Well if you are looking for a sample itinerary for three days, this blog is definitely for you!

DAY 1: Sohoton Caves

5:50 AM Arrive in Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport (Tacloban Airport) via Cebu Pacific flight 5J 651

6:30 AM Drop luggages in the hotel and eat breakfast

7:30 AM Arrive at the transport terminal

There is a transport terminal in front of Robinsons Tacloban where you can find UV Express vans that go from Tacloban City to Basey, Samar. Fare back in August 2018 is PHP 31 per person. Take note that it took us a while back then just to fill the entire van so make sure to arrive here early. Check out the view as well going to Basey as the van will pass by the famous San Juanico Bridge.

9:00 AM Alight at ABC Hall Building in Basey, Samar

9:00 AM – 2:00 PM Sohoton Caves Tour

Your van will pass by the ABC Hall Building (see picture above) in Basey which is where the Municipal Tourism Operations Office is located. From here, they will be the one to organize your tour already to and from Sohoton Caves. You can check out their flow chart in the picture below.

You will first ride a motorcycle going to Sohoton Visitors Center which will take about 25 minutes. Upon arrival, you will then ride a boat going to the caves. At the site of the caves, you have two activities which are both part of the tour. First is the caving experience then kayaking.

I personally loved the kayaking experience because the waters were so clear and clean and the ride all throughout was so peaceful and relaxing!

After both activities, you will ride a boat again back to the Sohoton Vistors Center then motorcycle back to the ABC Hall Building. Near the ABC Hall Building is the van terminal which can take you back to Tacloban City.

The Sohoton caves tour is well recommended especially if you are going to Tacloban since Basey, Samar is very near. Also, I have never been to a tourist destination in the Philippines that is well-organized as this one. You just have to go to the Municipal Tourism Operations Office in Basey and they will take care everything for you! Well-done to the DOT team in Basey!

4:45 AM Arrive at the van terminal from Tacloban to Palompon

Make sure to arrive early at the van terminal so that you can catch the first trip going to Palompon. We waited for more than 30 minutes at the terminal before our van departed. Normal travel time between Tacloban and Palompon is around 3 hours more or less. There are also several van terminals in Tacloban City so make sure to check it out the day before and ask the drivers what time is the first trip.

8:30 AM Arrive at Palompon

First thing to do upon arrival is to register at the site for your scheduled boat trip. If you are travelling on a weekend, holiday, or summer season, it is best to pre-arrange your boat trips beforehand because there is a certain limit per day only. Walk-in is highly discouraged since you may be denied for a trip to Kalanggaman Island if there are a lot of tourists reserved already.

After registering, make sure to allot time as well to buy food and drinks especially for your lunch in the island. There is a nearby wet market where you can grab these!

9:00 AM – 10:00 AM Travel time from Palompon to Kalanggaman Island

3:00 PM Depart Kalanggaman Island to Palompon

4:00 PM Ride van back to Tacloban City

Make sure that once you arrive in Palompon to immediately go to the van terminal as the last trip is around 4:30 PM.

DAY 3: Tacloban City Tour

1:00 PM – 4:00 PM Tour around Tacloban City (San Juanico Bridge, M/V EVA Jocelyn, and MacArthur Landing Memorial)

For the last day, you can visit other popular tourist spots in Tacloban City. Going to San Juanico Bridge, we rode a jeepney from the market area. It is best to ask your hotel staff to help you with this one. Afterwards, we negotiated with a tricycle driver to tour us to the M/V EVA Jocely and MacArthur Landing Memorial. Though you might not stay long in these sites, it is good to know that both San Juanico Bridge and the MacArthur Landing Memorial are quite a distance from city center.

Catbalogan Travel Guide

Catbalogan is Samar’s premier commercial, trading and financial hub, with a port that serves inter-island boats, and the land here is mountainous and coastal.

The town is the capital of Samar Province and acts as a gateway to the rest of the region. The area sees few visitors, which is a shame as the natural beauty here is breathtaking and largely unspoiled. The coast is littered with secret bays and coves that run for 10 miles.

There is a large shopping mall known as Centro Mall that proves popular with the few tourists that make it this far and the town is serviced by the Pan-Philippine Highway, making it easy to get around. There are a few places to stay and a handful of tourist amenities, but the main attractions are the natural environments that are untouched by roving tourists.

Getting There & Away

Manila has the nearest international airport but there are no flights between it and Catbalogan. There is the chance to hire a private jet to nearby Buri Island, a 2-hour flight. From Cebu there are regular boats that go to Catbalogan that take about 10 hours.

The Philippines is one of the world’s most traveled tourist destination in the world. With a lot of natural resources and scenic views in the country, foreigners cannot just resist the temptation of going to this country. One of the places that which has these characteristics is the Northern Samar of Samar Island. Though not yet that too well-known to tourists, this place will undoubtedly be one of the future gems of the country in the aspect of tourism. Whatever is your preferred destination, beach, waterfalls, and rock formations, this place got it all for you!

Samar is divided into three provinces: Samar province, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. These three provinces, along with the provinces on the nearby islands of Leyte and Biliran are part of the Eastern Visayas region. It is the fourth largest island in the Philippines after Luzon, Mindanao, and Negros.

Going to Samar is quite challenging especially if you are coming from Negros. You will have the option to take the land trip to Cebu and from Cebu to Samar. The land trip from Negros Occidental to Samar would take you the whole day.  Oh well, if you are not in a hurry this can also be fun. But not for me this time. I have to be on the Island at the shortest possible time and I should not be exhausting my physical power so I will be able to run the three- day training in “Personal Effectiveness” for the staff of the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation effectively.    to take the Bacolod to Manila route…stay overnight in Manila and fly to Samar, Catarman the following day.

I wasn’t expecting much from the Island … so I wasn’t surprised when I reached the Catarman.

Catarman the Capital of Northern Samar

Catarman is the capital and largest town in terms of both area and population in the province of Northern Samar. The town lies on the northern part of Samar Island and southeast of the Philippine capital, Manila. It is bounded to the east by Mondragon, to the west by Bobon, to the south by Lope de Vega, and to the north by the San Bernardino Strait. At present, there are 55 barangays, 22 of them in the Poblacion .

Before the coming of the Spaniards, it is said that  Catarman was called Ibabao and was part of the extensive Maguindanao Kingdom, which extended from Mindanao to Bicol. Ibabao extended from the southernmost tip of Samar Island to the territories close to Bobon in the northernmost part of the island. The Spanish Conquistadores freely applied the name Ibabao to the island when it established its civil government. The similarities in the vocabularies and pronunciation of the dialects of these areas trace them to a common root as people. The word Catarman is derived from the Turkish word attar (oil of the roses) and inman (holy men).

The town was one of the pueblos established by the Spaniards in Samar Island and was one of the settlements in the northern parts of the island. The pueblo was named Calatman and was one of the pueblos in the Samar and Leyte islands, then collectively referred to as Islas de Pintados.

Catarman is home to the University of Eastern Philippines.

Going around Catarman proper are mostly done through pedicab or simply by walking. I enjoyed walking a lot after all Catarman proper is just very small. One funny experience I had was when I was invited by Ms. Tess Nunez, Training Manager of NWTF to dine outside for my last stay in Catarman (the hotel we stayed has no restaurant). Of course, one pedicab cannot accommodate both of us. So we took one pedicab each. The native bar and restaurant ‘Tsiban” is one of the best places in Catarman, but from the hotel that we stayed, we still have to cross a bridge which was quite steep for a pedicab. The driver of the pedicab I took was tagging along with him her girlfriend. In the middle of the bridge, I can hear the struggling breath of the driver. I heard him telling her girlfriend to get down and push the pedicab. How I wish someone was taking our pictures at that time. The scene was ridiculously humorous.

For travelers, Catarman offered quite a number of Pension Houses. The room rates range from 1,000 to 1,500/room. Catarman is basically simple and Laidback. There are a number of places which one can visit during night time. But I was surprised, food in the restaurants are priced high a bit.

Of course in any trip, food is always a big factor, so the staff of Negros Women for Tomorrow’s Foundation offered to cook dinner for us. Fish like fresh tuna is quite reasonable at PhP 160/kilo in the wet market.

For the first-timer like me, I was looking for a place to buy some souvenirs that I can bring home. There was none. So with my camera, I went around Catarman proper and took some pictures of the place.

 Northern Samar Tourist Spots

Located in Sila Island, this beach will be one of your favorites. Admit it, either men or women will surely fall in love with this place! Who wouldn’t be right? This is one of the best beaches in the country due to its unique pink color of the sand. This is due to the fragments of red corals and different shells mixed with the white sand, making it color pink in appearance most especially when the rays of the sun touch the shore. Thus, making it a picturesque place for your summer Instagram posts. Another factor why this place is loved by many is the fact that the emerald-colored water is rich with corals and fishes. You may also give swimming and snorkeling a try to fully enjoy the experience. Either you stay for the day or overnight through camping, the choice is up to you.

Dalupiri Island

The tropical atmosphere manifested by the long stretched of white sand with planted palms on the side makes this place famous. The availability of accommodations is also one of the factors why tourists love the place, well, they are just located in front of the beach itself making it ideal for instant swimming and snorkeling sessions. On the other side of the island is the part where tourists could witness how gifted the place is regarding marine resources. Reaching this place will only take you a 30-minute boat ride from the Victorina town.

Located on the North-eastern Coast of Northern Samar, this beach is famous for its golden sand beach color. Stretching up to the total length of one kilometer, tourists will surely enjoy walking on the shore while watching the serene and calm water as well as lush shrubbery. On the end part of the beach on the South part lies the two massive rocks which serve as diving platforms for the tourists. Though the place is said to be haunted in some ways due to a folktale that did not stop the visitors from traveling to this beautiful place.

Batag Island Lighthouse

The 101-foot lighthouse in the Island of Batag built during the American Occupation back in the year 1907 is one of the top historical places of the entire province of Samar. This was originally built to direct the passing vessels towards the San Bernandino passage. But today, this place offers an amazing experience for the tourists to see the place in an amazing and exquisite way. Once you are there, you can have a panoramic view of the wide agricultural land, coconut trees, coastlines, mountains, and the passage of San Bernandino. Well, aside from the historical aspect of this place, the scenic view it offers will surely entice the tourists to pay a visit.

Biri Island Rock Formation

Traveling to this place from the mainland will take you a total of a 20-minutes boat ride. But no need to feel discouraged because the beauty of the place will be worth it. Once you land to the island, the first thing that will catch your attention will be the seven gigantic rock formations which the locals named Bel-at, Caranas, Macadlaw, Magasang, Magsapad, Pinanahawan, and the Puhunan. The place also got the title of “battle of the gods” attributing to the formation of such humongous rocks, though these are formed through the tectonic plate movements. The site is also perfect for those who are water sports enthusiasts (snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing) because of the strong winds and intense water waves.

Capul Lighthouse

The Capul lighthouse was built way back in the year 1896; this served as a guide to different ships and vessels crossing the San Bernardino. This also contributed to the well-known Acapulco-Manila galleon trade. Though you will have to take a 30-minute boat ride from the mainland to go to this island where it is located, the scene awaiting you is so stunning. There is an available viewing area sharing the view of the coastline, crashing waves, San Bernandino passage, mountains, and the Mt.Bulusan of Sorsogon.

Capul Church

The Church of San Ignacio de Loyola or also known as Capul Church was declared as a National Culture Treasure. Why? Aside from the fact that it is already 400 years old, it has been a haven for many Spanish in protecting the town from the Moro pirates. Despite their efforts, the Church was destroyed and needed to undergo two reconstructions to restore it with walls along with a 36-foot bell tower on its side (left). Visit this historic site and be mesmerized on how such Church tested by tremendous challenges stood the test of time.

Laoang Church

The Saint Michael the Archangel Parish or also called Laoang Church is just situated in the center of the town. Built during the 18th century, by Franciscan friars who made Catholicism well-known to the locals. Thus, converting them into Catholics. The antique feature of its facade made it perfect to put the statues of different saints and angels, Saint Paul and Saint Peter, Saint Michael the Archangel, and Virgin Mary to name a few. To further defend the Church from the Moro pirates, the Almuraya Fortress Ruins (wall) was used as a defense system.

Busay Falls

Busay Falls is one of the top tourist spots in the Northern part of Samar. Located in San Isidro, this falls is 2 kilometers away from the actual town. The water coming from the falls pours down to the two huge vertical walls of rock formation going to the bottomless plunge pool. For the adventurous visitors, they may also choose the flat stone spot near the falls to do their cliff-diving. Covered with greeneries and natural beauty of the place, tourists are fond of going here for swimming as well as cliff jumping.

Veriato Falls

The water is coming from the 30-meters high rock slope going down to a vast natural pool which makes it perfect for those who would like to spend their vacations on varied swimming activities. The deepest part of the natural pool is 10 feet, a place where most of the adventurous adults stay. The rock formation on the side part serves as a picnic place for the tourists making it convenient to visit and stay even in the summer season.

How to get to Northern Samar

By Air You can reach Northern Samar by Air depending on where you wanted to stay. Three airports are servicing Samar: Catarman, Calbayog, and Tacloban.

By Land If plane tickets are too expensive and you are on a budget, you can opt for a bus. From Manila, you can take a bus from Pasay or Cubao bound for Catarman/Rawis or Tacloban. Travel time may take 15-18 hours. You can take local buses or Jeepneys going to your destination.

Love the idea of returning sometime to Catarman, Samar. I spent several years there with my family and went to St. Michael College. I probably would meet old friends. I still remember when the streets were unpaved and covered with the finest sand. I ride my bike with some friends to Tamburusan, one of the beaches there. I have happy memories of this place!

⏺ OPTION 1: 📌Take a plane from Metro Manila to Tacloban City, Leyte (e.g. Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and AirAsia). 📌Ride a taxi or jeepney to get to the terminal of vans bound for the municipalities of Eastern Samar. 📌Transfer to a van to reach the towns of Eastern Samar.

⏺ Divinubo Island and Baybay Boulevard of Borongan City 📌Ride a van bound for Borongan (travel time: 3.5 – 4 hours). 📌Hire a tricycle that will take you to the small port of Barangay Lalawigan. 📌Ride the public boat to get to Divinubo Island. 📌You can also charter the boat if you are travelling with a group to save on time. 📌You can try the different food stalls in Baybay Boulevard in Borongan City proper.

Catbalogan City is the provincial capital city of Samar , in Eastern Visayas , Philippines. It is also the commercial, trading, educational, political and financial center of Samar. It lies along the Pan-Philippine (Maharlika) Highway and is the gateway to the region's three Samar provinces. It has been long known as the "Gateway to Samar Region."

The Waray-Waray language is the primarily spoken language in the city. Catbaloganons also recognize Filipino (Tagalog) and English languages as a medium of instruction in schools and offices.

The word Catbalogan is said to be derived from the shrub balaug that thrived along the banks of the Antiao River.

The citizens of Catbalogan, called Catbaloganons, are peace-loving, friendly and hospitable people, and innately jolly and easy to get along with. Immersing with the people will likewise give one an idea how Catbaloganons make up their daily grinds.

The city has long been known as a center for fishery and aquatic resources and prides itself on being a fishing community. Thus, the city's Patron Saint is Saint Bartholomew, the Patron Saint of Fishermen, from whom the concept of Manaragat Festival came from. Manaragat Festival is celebrated every year, during the whole month of August. Catbaloganons are religious people, and always make sure that they dedicate a day for their Patron Saint as a form of giving thanks.

For longer stays, especially during the month of May, expect to go village hopping since it's a party every day. It is considered a mortal sin to decline an invitation during Fiesta celebrations. hHhHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

By plane [ edit ]

Another option is taking a flight to Tacloban City from Manila or Cebu. Upon arrival at the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport, one can take a jeep to Abucay Terminal if you intend to get a bus to Catbalogan City or to different shuttle van terminals (Grandtours, Duptours and Van-Van). From Tacloban City, it is a 2-hour land trip to Catbalogan City.

By boat [ edit ]

• Port of Catbalogan . Mostly serving fishing boats and passenger launches serving the nearby islands, but also sees some long-distance ferries. ( updated Jul 2019 )

From Cebu City two times a week, a overnight passenger ferry run by Roble Shipping lines departs directly to Catbalogan City, every 7PM. Another alternative is to take any of the ferries to Ormoc , then take a UV Express to Catbalogan, but there will be a major stopover at Tacloban.

By bus or van [ edit ]

• there are buses or minivans which go from Catbalogan to/from Catarman , Borongan , Calbayog, Legazpi City , Allen port
• to/From Tacloban for trips via van, go to downtown (possible options: Grand Tours, Duptours, Vanvan's); for trips via bus, go to the Public Terminal in Abucay.

Catbalogan Bus Terminal [ edit ]

The Catbalogan Bus Terminal offers several regular bus trips from nearby towns and cities in the region. Jeepney transport is also a common mode of land transportation in the city. The Catbalogan City Bus Terminal is situated between Piers I and II, Barangay 6, Downtown area of Catbalogan City.

Bus companies that ply the 24-hour Manila-Catbalogan City route, including the 2-hour ferry from Matnog, Sorsogon to Allen, Northern Samar, are the following:

Motored tricycles and pedicabs are the preferred modes of transportation within the downtown area at ₱10 per ride each. At the city's Public Terminal, located at Allen Avenue Extension, one will find multicabs for trips to the northern and southern barangays of the city. This is where jeepneys bound for neighboring municipalities of Jiabong, Motiong, Paranas and Calbiga can be found. For trips to the island barangays and other nearby island municipalities, one may go to the City Port for the boats plying these routes.

• Church of St. Bartholomew the Apostle - It was built in 1616, but did not assume its present form until 1814, when Father Felix Carreon, OFM, set out to repair the church after it was burned in 1760. Father Martin de Yepes constructed the altars and also had a colonnade of wooden posts raised, thus dividing the nave into three sections. The facade used Ionic columns for its articulation. In 1835, the church burnt a second time but was rebuilt by the Franciscans. The old meter-high image of the patron saint, St. Bartholomew, is kept in the rectory. Behind the church are remains of the quadrilateral fort traced to Jesuit times.
• Rizal Monument - in front of the Catbalogan City Hall, there’s a small park with a unique bust of the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, with his two novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo serving as the base. Holding up the books with the bust are three muscular men who are all naked except for a leaf that covers their genital areas. The three naked men, representing the Philippine archipelago's three major group of islands - Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, carry the books and the bust. The sculpture means to convey that "ours is a continuing burden to reform the social system, to pave the way for a better life for Filipinos." The naked men are interpreted as "naked in the sense that we are all equal." This one-of-a-kind Rizal monument in Catbalogan City is a tourist attraction and has been featured on TV and in news articles. The sculptor is Miguel Alcazar, a native of Catbalogan City. He studied at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, and he made the Rizal monument in 1959, before his family migrated to the United States. He died in New York in October 1980.
• Samar Provincial Capitol - built in 1930 during the American occupation.
• The Obelisk - in the heart of Catbalogan City's Samar Provincial Capitol Park, it depicts four major events in Samar's history - the 1901 Balangiga Encounter in which local revolutionaries inflicted the "worst single defeat" of the Americans during the Philippine-American War (1899–1902); the 1649 Agustin Sumoroy Rebellion in Palapag against the Spaniards; the October 15, 1596 arrival of the first Jesuit missionaries to Samar; and Queen Isabella II of Spain carrying a Royal Decree of August 11, 1841 declaring Samar as an independent province.
• Imelda Park - across from the Samar Provincial Capitol. It is a great place to unwind and relax in the city. Many food stalls are located in the park that serve local delicacies and street foods that can satisfy your palate.
• Pieta Park - adjacent to St. Bartholomew Church and St. Mary's College of Catbalogan, it has a memorial honoring Catbaloganons and four thousand-plus others who perished in the tragic collision of the passenger ship MV Doña Paz and the oil tanker MT Vector on December 20, 1987. With an estimated death toll of 4,386 people, historians describe the Doña Paz tragedy not only as the world's deadliest ferry disaster but also the worst peace-time maritime disaster in history.
• Samar National School - formerly Samar High School, it was established by the Americans in 1912. t is the oldest school on Samar Island. It is also known to hold the biggest and grandest annual alumni gathering in the whole island of Samar.

At the port area (Pier 1), Twin Restobar and Pier One Disco are located, both are fastly becoming good hang-outs for a night of visit.

Visit Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park

Some of the caves in Samar Province can be found in this National Park, like Panhulugan Cave. A 15-minute kayak leisure ride can take you to some limestone cliffs, rock formations, and virgin forests. You also get to see the natural bridge if you take this ride. They call this a ‘hidden and secret paradise.’

Go on Torpedo Boat Adventure Ride in the Ulot River

The TORPEDO Boat Extreme Ride goes through 10.5 kilometers of rapid. You’ll ride a boat that can take the intense rapids of that river. The end of the destination is Deni’s Point which has cool waters and boulders where you and your friends can have a picnic. Some visitors jump into the water from the boulders for a more exciting adventure.

You can see many limestone rock formations when you set out for this marine park. The limestone formations are out on the sea, so they look like they’re floating, which makes a fantastic contrast with the blue sky. It’s located at San Pedro Bay, which they say has calm waters.

Additionally, you can check out the 16 th Century Lighthouse of San Pedro Bay, which sits on an islet and is visited by many birds.

Swim in Lulugayan Falls

Swim in the natural pools or walk on the banks and the waterfalls when you visit Lulugayan Falls. There are cottages in the area where you can admire the beauty of the place. The uniqueness of the falls comes from its cascading waters that look like a pretty curtain from afar and the sky and some trees as backdrops.

Visit Pinipisakan Falls

If Lulugayan Falls features a curtain-like appearance, Pinipisakan Falls is different because it features two tiers in a magical position. You’ll know you’re in paradise when you see those tiers. The water is pale green, and there’s a cave by the falls. This is a good place for swimming, but more importantly, it’s the best place to take photos for your Instagram.

The cottage industry of Basey is where you will find the Tikog Mats or Banig and learn about them. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the craft. You will be taken to the Saob Cave, where they let the tikog grass become sturdy because the cave’s environment is appropriate for the grass. You will see how it is prepared and the end product, which is colorful and durable.

Try the Foods of Samar

Samar Province offers many delectable dishes to try when you go there. Some of their must-try dishes are Lelang, a native pork dish with shrimps, sotanghon, and togue. Another dish in Samar that you should try is its Tamalos which they say is the local version of Tamales.

The native sweets of the province include Salukara, which resembles a pancake and uses tuba (young coconut wine) as a rising agent. Another one is Tambis-tambis or sweet coconut shreds that’s been deep-fried and have white sugar topping. You also must try their ‘Kesong Puti’, one of the province’s best sellers.

Watch Festivals

The province hosts many festivals and events like the Manaragat in Catbalogan, which is held every August and honors the patron saint of the city, St. Bartholomew.

The Hadang in Calbayog is also a must-see festival. It’s an event where there is a colorful parade, and people wear rooster costumes as a ritual to worship their gods.

There’s also the Carabao (Gandara) Festival which celebrates the ‘farm beast of burden’ for their precious carabao milk, which they used for their kesiyo (kesong puti).

The last one is the Kawayan-Banigan, held every September 28, focusing on the province’s bamboo and mat weaving livelihood. The celebration also showcases various street dances, parades, and exhibits.

Eastern Samar is now accessible via flights to Borongan Airport. Flag-carrier Philippine Airlines launched its Cebu to Borongan flights on December 19, 2022. Those coming from Manila in the Luzon region can book a connecting flight to Borongan via Cebu.

Previously, travelers accessed Borongan, Eastern Samar, via flights to Tacloban from Manila and had to travel by land for 3-4 hours.

Amandaraga Falls might not be one of the most famous waterfalls in the Philippines , but this hidden natural wonder in Lawaan, Eastern Samar, deserves praise because of its crystal-clear waters and unique rock formations. St. Anthony of Padua Church, locally known as Sulangan Church, is a Diocesan church in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. It is well-known among both residents and pilgrims due to its miraculous stories. Samar Island, known as the “Caving Capital of the Philippines,” is home to Linao Cave, one of the most underrated caves in the Philippines . In the small town of Hernani, Eastern Samar, lies a nature park known for its big waves colliding with large rock formations. Canhugas Nature Park got its name from the local term “hugas”, which means wash. Back in the old days, fishermen used to wash their catch in its waters.

Amandaraga Falls

Amandaraga is one spectacular waterfall! After about an hour and a half of trekking from the jumpoff point, I was able to reach this towering falls. Though unclear where it got its name, “daraga”in Waray means “maiden” and my tour guide, Kuya Juijean said that the falls might have derived its name here. The river system running from the falls is long and wide, and the force of its waters as it falls down from the top is strong. Ando Island

Ando Island is located northeast of  Borongan Bay, just 2 kilometers off the coast of  Borongan City. It has an area of 1.1, almost twice larger compared to Divinubo Island, sorrounded by coral sand and rocky cliffs. Ban-awan Falls

The jump-off point going to Ban-awan Falls is just a quick 10-minute habal-habal ride from Lawaan town proper. The hike normally takes 1 to 1.5 hours, however after the onslaught of typhoon Yolanda, it is said that the hike now takes up to 4 hours. Calicoan Island

Church of the Immaculate Conception

One of the most beautiful and majestic Catholic churches in Eastern Visayas is the Immaculate Conception Church in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. The Immaculate Conception Church was first built in the 1630s. Then during the 18th century, it was rebuilt using stones. Father Manuel Valverde further renovated the church starting in 1844. A new convent was erected in 1872. After the Second World War, a new rectory was built. Linao Cave – There is a very cold and not too much salty water inside. It is best for swimming especially in summer. The water is clear when it is high tide and if you are the first comer of the day.

On Holy week, folks in different barangay not far away from the cave, are gathered each other to go in Linao, to have some fun and to swim. Elders said that on holy week the insects or any kind of dangerous creatures are dead and that’s why it is safe to go there. Minasangay Island Marine Ecological Park and Resort

Minasangay Island is not an actual island. It is a marine eco-park & resort that can be found in Balangkayan, Eastern Samar. It is mostly known for the conservation of reefs and sea turtles. Once you are there in their beach, you’ll be able to see different fishes freely swimming. Some were small, some were big, and some were colourful. Pearl Island

Pearl Island can be reached via a 30-minute boat ride from the main coast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. As you know, the Visayas is home to specialized academic and research institutions on aquaculture and marine sciences. Pearl Island belongs to such category being a BFAR research center on pearl culture.

It’s a quaint little island, so small you can traverse it from coast to coast in less than 5 minutes. There is no electricity on the island. Saint Anthony of Padua Church

Saint Anthony of Padua Church or commonly known as Sulangan Chruch is one of the famous churches in Eastern Samar. The church is made known by the locals and believers as the sacred place where those who pray for impossible prayers shall be granted such as healing for incurable disease and asking for materials things. This good news spread in the nearby towns and every Sunday is full of people from those who just want to give thanks to the Lord, students praying for board exams to those praying for healing among others. Sohoton Cave

This is one of the main attractions of Sohoton National Park. The entrance of the cave is parabolic-arc-shaped and with the height of fifty (50) meters. The cathedral-like entrance chamber of the cave is definitely inviting with its fantastic view outside and the cool breeze emanating from the cave. The flat door is about 20 meters by 50 meters

Suluan Island

Suluan Island is a small island that lies east of Leyte Gulf, near Homonhon Island and Calicoan Island. Suluan Island was the first-ever landing place of Ferdinand Magellan’s armada after their 98-day Pacific crossing although Samar was their first land sighting. They then next dropped anchor at Homonhon Island, where they spent a week with the natives, and then to Limasawa, where the first ever Christian mass was held March 31, 1521.  The name of the Suluan Island might have been derived from the Sulu people, from the word Suluan or Suan meaning to light the lamp or candle. Suluan is also name to the people living in the Sulu Archipelago, the Tausug together with the ethnic tribes here. Hi Mervin, Honestly, I wouldn't recommend a day tour around Catarman if you'll be coming from Manila. Sayang kasi pamasahe at effort hehehe. There's not much to see around Catarman kasi. The tourist spots are either in the Pacific area (towns of Catubig, Las Navas, Palapag, Mapanas), in the Balicuatro area (Allen, Victoria), or in the island towns areas (San Vicente, San Antonio, Biri). Unfortunately, kulang ang isang araw to travel to and explore these places. Saka isa pa, hindi lahat ng towns dito ay may accommodation.

Located in the southernmost tip of Eastern Samar, Guiuan is an underrated tourist destination in Eastern Visayas . It is comprised of 60 barangays, including the historical island of Homonhon , the surfing island of Calicoan and the islands of Sulangan, Suluan , and Tubabao. [Read: Biri Travel Guide ]

Historically, it was in the town of Guiuan where Ferdinand Magellan and his men first set foot in the Philippines on the shore of Homonhon Island on March 16, 1521.

The town of Guiuan has made a headline in 2013 when it was hit by the eye of Super Typhoon Haiyan, locally named Yolanda. It was badly affected by the typhoon leaving hundreds of casualties and injuries.

Today, Guiuan has somehow recovered from that nightmare in 2013. The damaged homes and structures were already repaired and rebuilt. Tourism in the area is starting to pick up. Hotels and resorts are once again available to cater to the needs of the tourists most especially in the island of Calicoan.

GUIUAN TOURIST SPOTS: What to See and Do in Guiuan?

Guiuan Church or the Immaculate Conception Parish Church is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. It was partially destroyed by typhoon Yolanda but with the help of some heritage advocates and government agencies it has now been partially rehabilitated. It remains closed for the public because the interior has not been restored yet. 

It is situated at the heart of Guiuan town proper so you can pretty much visit it when you arrive in Guiuan.

Surf in Calicoan’s ABCD Beach Surf Camp

Dubbed as the “Surfing Capital of Visayas”, Calicoan Island is the to-go place for tourists who want to play with the waves. It’s about 30 minutes away from downtown Guiuan via multicab . The fare is only Php30 but the frequency of multicab trip is infrequent. If you are taking a shared public transport on a day trip, it is highly recommended that you go there in the morning so you can return in the afternoon. The multicab will pass in front of the police and tourism office (beside Andoks) but to be sure, just walk to the Guiuan public terminal. You can also charter a tricycle going to Calicoan Island for about Php300-500.

If you are not a fan of the big waves, then the other side of Calicoan (near Sulangan) is the best spot for you. You can enjoy the white sand and the calm water in the island.To get there, ride a multicab to Sulangan and inform the driver you are going to La Luna Beach. He should drop you off before crossing the Sulangan Bridge. Fare is P40 from Guiuan town proper and Php10 from the surfing area.

Visit the Sulangan Church

Sulangan Church or the The Shrine of St. Anthony of Padua is one of the popular religious structures in Eastern Visayas made famous buy its miraculous Saint. The church has a Baroque-inspired facade which was reconstructed in 1957 and was repaired in 2007.

GUIUAN RESTAURANTS : Where to Eat in Guiuan?

There are a lot of eateries and restaurants in Guiuan but if you are into fresh seafood, you should go to Tanghay View Lodge Restaurant. It is located close to the town proper and is accessible both by private and public transport. A tricycle can bring you to the restaurant from the town proper for Php10.

HOTELS IN GUIUAN : Where to Stay in Guiuan?

A good place to stay in Guiuan is Tanghay View Lodge as it is close to the town center and has a restaurant to fill your tummy. Room rates is between Php500-Php2000. You may contact them at 09365319495.

RESORTS IN CALICOAN : Where to Stay in Calicoan

Calicoan Villa

There are a number of resorts in Calicoan Island but if you are looking for a place near to the surfing area, then Calicoan Villa is the right accommodation for you. I stayed in their non-airconditioned surfing hut for Php1,200 a night (good for two). It was okay, I chose the beachfront hut so I had a great time. How to get to Guiuan?

From Manila: From Manila, take an Eagle Star bus direct to Guiuan. Travel time is over 24 hours and fare is around Php1,500. Another option is to take a bus to Borongan and take a van from there to Guiuan. If you want to fly, the nearest commercial airport is Tacloban.  

From Tacloban: Take a van to Guiuan. Travel time is around 3 hours and fare is Php160. First trip is at 3am and last trip is 6pm. I highly recommend Duptours vans.

From Borongan: From Borongan, take a van to Guiuan. Travel time is a little over 2 hours and fare is Php110. The schedule of van trips from Borongan to Guiuan via Duptours is daily at 5am , 9am , 1pm and 5pm . Every Sunday, the 5am trip will go direct to Sulangan.

From Calbayog and Catbalogan: From Calbayog, take an Eagle Bus direct to Guiuan. It should pass by Calbayog around lunch time. Alternatively, you can take a van to Catbalogan and take a van from there to Borongan, then to Guiuan. The schedule of van trips from Catbalogan to Borongan is daily at 4am , 8am , 1pm and 5pm via Duptours Vans. Travel time from Catbalogan to Borongan is a little over 2 hours.
