How to get ready for a road trip using Google’s travel site and Maps

Avatar for Andrew Romero

Due to the pandemic, travel has been slow this past year, and you might be a little rusty when it comes to picking up and traveling somewhere to visit friends and family or just planning a getaway. Whatever the case, Google has a few helpful tools in Google Maps and Google’s travel site to help you get started on making those plans and staying safe along the way.

Table of contents

Getting started with google’s travel website, using google map’s road trip feature, planning a trip around covid-19 restrictions.

Google’s travel website is meant to be a companion site that can help you plan all of the details of your trip. You can use it to book flights, make an itinerary, and even explore interesting places to visit at your destination. If you have a Gmail account , there’s a good chance that any flight reservation you make will automatically appear the next time you use Google’s travel site, making it that much easier to plan the trip’s details. If not, Google Travel may suggest locations based on your search history and interests. While that may be a little creepy, it can also be pretty helpful.

If no destination has been chosen yet, Google will suggest locations in the “Explore” tab. You can filter these locations based on flight and hotel cost, giving you a pretty good idea of where a nice place to go would be. After choosing a destination, Google gives you a few options as far as what you’d want to know. There’s a “Discover” section that will break down various points of interest. In bigger cities, you may find the number of things to do or see endless. Fortunately, you can filter out locations and activities based on your personal interest.

If there are a few places that pique your curiosity, or you already know you want to go there, Google allows you to save them to the trip and pin them to the trip’s detail page. This serves as a sort of to-do list when you get where you’re going.

Site default logo image

If you don’t plan on flying and want to avoid certain COVID-19 hotspots, Google Maps is probably the way to go. Just this year, Google added a feature to the Maps website that allows you to add stops along the route when planning the trip. Previously this was possible on mobile, but it didn’t lend itself well to planning out a road trip to be shared with friends and family. Adding stops along the way with Google Maps on mobile was best for impromptu stops.

Once you’ve defined a starting point and destination, you can add stops along the way. You can add anything from a city to rest stops and gas stations. You can do this by either manually entering a stop you already know you would like to pause at, or by choosing one of the criteria towards the top of the screen. Google Maps lets you narrow down your search by these criteria:

When selecting from one of these criteria, Google will also suggest a few filters. For instance, choosing hotels will bring up a “Guest rating” filter, as well as an “Amenities” filter, so you make sure that you’re getting free wifi. Of course, if none of these fit the bill, you can always just search for what you want. The nice thing is that these suggestions can add a little flare to the trip by suggesting something you would have never thought about, making the road trip that much more exciting.

Once you find a point of interest, hit add stop , and Google Maps will automatically insert it in the right spot on the planned route. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way to define how much time you plan on spending at that stop, so the trip time might have to be calculated manually. Besides that, Google Maps has become a handy road trip planner with enough tools to get you where you’re going and let you have some fun along the way.

The major caveat to traveling right now is the looming risk of COVID-19. Fortunately, the travel website by Google and Maps both supply some great tools for managing risk and assessing where you plan to go.

On the travel website, you can find up-to-date COVID-19 information for your destination pretty easily. You can access this information by searching for and clicking on the destination . Under the main card that lists the date of your trip, area name, and weather, there will be a COVID information section. This section has useful information like the CDC’s travel advisory website, COVID-19 stats for that specific area, and the number of local cases.

Clicking on the “Travel advisory” button brings you to the CDC’s COVID-19 map. This map is a risk assessment of most destinations in the world, color-coded depending on how risky it is to travel there. The second button will search Google for COVID-19 information on the location you’re traveling to, detailing data like news, statistics, and testing locations. The “Local cases” button will show even more detailed information about active cases, vaccines administered, and deaths in the area. All of this is fantastic information to have when traveling and comes in handy when planning your trip.

How do I add my hotel to Google Maps?

There are around 8.5 billion searches daily on Google. That includes guests hungry for delightful stay experiences, researching alternatives and learning more about your property.

Being on Google Maps is a must for hotels today. As the owner of your business profile on Google, you can engage with customers to build brand loyalty and recognition.

This article will show you the steps to adding your single or multiple hotel locations to Google Maps, editing your details, and what to do if your hotel has already been added.

Why add your hotel to Google Maps?

Outside the great benefits of brand visibility, Google features more tools to help your hotel grow.

For example, show your dedication to excellent customer service by replying to comments and thanking guests.

Or address negative reviews to turn unhappy customers into happy ones.

You can also add beautiful images and videos to showcase your hotel, services, and surroundings to customers to motivate potential guests.

Other features include answering Q&As, chatting with customers, and creating posts for hotels.

Taking the time to add your hotel to Google Maps is worth it.

Luckily, Google makes it very easy to do so.

How to add your hotel to Google Maps

There are two ways you can add your hotel to Google Maps.

If your hotel is in multiple locations and you want to register multiple profiles, follow the guide below.

To register a single hotel profile, follow “How to register one hotel in Google Maps.”

How to add your hotel to multiple locations in Google Maps:

  • Visit the Business Profile Manager at business.google.com.
  • Click 'Manage now' in the top right corner.
  • Sign in to your Google Account (or create one if you don’t have one).
  • Enter your hotel's name and click 'Next'.
  • Add your hotel's address or place a marker on the map.
  • Choose a business category under “Business category”.
  • Enter a phone number or website URL for your hotel.
  • Click 'Continue' to verify your connection to the hotel.
  • Choose a verification option.

How to register one hotel in Google Maps:

  • Sign in to Google Maps.
  • Add your hotel in one of three ways: enter your hotel’s address in the search bar, right-click anywhere on the map, or click 'Menu' then 'Add your business'.
  • Enter your hotel's name.
  • Select a business category.
  • Follow the instructions to sign up.
  • Choose a verification option

According to Google , you must be authorised to manage the Business profile for the hotel you want to enter.

If you’re not authorised, they advise you to find the authorised person in your organisation and continue the process. Or select ‘Try a different method’ and click ‘Later’ to verify another time.

If your hotel is already on Google Maps

In some cases, your hotel is already added on Google Maps.

First, check if your hotel’s business profile is already claimed. See if you can find a ‘Claim this Business’ or ‘Own this business’ link on the profile.

If you can’t find it, you’re likely the owner already. In that case, you’ll see a ‘You manage this business profile’ badge in your profile.

If the hotel business profile is unclaimed and you want ownership, start the process by finding your business profile:

  • Visit business.google.com/add , enter the name and address of your business, select it in the results, and click “Claim this business” under the business profile.
  • Alternatively, search your hotel name on Google Maps or Google Search and click “Claim this business” under the business profile.

You'll see a message if your hotel business profile is verified. But if you have the right to manage the profile, you can ask the current owner to transfer their ownership to you.

Next, click ‘Continue.’

Then, click ‘Request access’ and follow the steps.

Finally, submit your application, and you’ll be notified by email if your request for ownership is approved or denied.

Remember, If your application is approved, you must wait a week before making major changes like deleting the profile or other owners.

How to edit your hotel details

Keeping your hotel details current is vital. Nothing disappoints guests like being misled with false information. Make it a habit to audit your Google profile regurarly and update it whenever you’re making changes to amenities or other areas of your business.

Because hotels are open 24/7, you can’t change your hotel’s opening hours.

But if you have amenities with set business hours, like your bar or restaurant, creating new business profiles for those businesses is recommended.

Edit your hotel amenities in your dashboard.

To edit your hotel’s details, go to your hotel’s business profile and click ‘Hotel Details.’

Find the attribute you want to change, fill in the information, and save.

Another cool feature for hotels is hotel highlights.

When users search for your hotel on Google Search or Google Maps, icons like “Free Wi-Fi” and “Pet Friendly” can appear next to your amenities.

Congratulations, with your hotel on Google Maps, you’ll now make your hotel visible to a chunk of the billions of daily Google searches.

When users plan their next trip, you can wow potential guests with beautiful imagery and videos and motivate them to choose you over competitors.

Think of your profile on Google as an interactive, always-on ad — keep your information fresh and up-to-date and audit often.

When you get reviews, respond kindly and positively, thanking them for their ratings. For negative reviews, think of ways to remedy their experience. The right reply can work wonders to turn unhappy customers into returning ones.

Adding your hotel to Google is a great decision that will benefit your hotel immensely.

  • Plan Your Trip

how-to-set-a-trip-on-google-maps

Introduction

Google Maps is a versatile tool that offers much more than just basic navigation. With its powerful features, you can plan and optimize your trips, whether you’re embarking on a road trip, exploring a new city, or simply trying to find the best route to your destination. Setting a trip on Google Maps allows you to visualize your journey, estimate travel times, and discover interesting attractions along the way.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of setting a trip on Google Maps, helping you make the most of this powerful tool. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or someone who wants to explore your local area, these tips will help you plan your trips effectively and efficiently.

But before we dive into the details, make sure you have the Google Maps app installed on your device. It’s available for both Android and iOS, and you can also access Google Maps on your computer through the web browser. Once you have the app set up, you’re ready to start planning your next adventure!

Step 1: Open Google Maps

The first step in setting a trip on Google Maps is to open the app on your device. If you’re using a computer, navigate to the Google Maps website in your preferred web browser. Once you have the app or website open, you’re ready to begin planning your trip.

Google Maps offers a user-friendly interface with a search bar at the top of the screen. This search bar is where you’ll enter your starting point and destination. Click or tap on the search bar to activate it and get started with planning your trip.

Additionally, you can access different layers and settings by tapping on the menu icon, usually located on the top left corner of the screen. This allows you to customize your map view, switch between different modes of transportation, and access additional features like traffic information and satellite view.

Google Maps also allows you to sign in with your Google account. By doing so, you can save your trip information, access it across multiple devices, and even share it with others. Keep in mind that signing in is optional and you can still plan your trip without creating an account.

Now that you have Google Maps open and ready, it’s time to move on to the next step: entering your starting point.

Step 2: Enter Your Starting Point

Once you have Google Maps open, the next step in setting your trip is to enter your starting point. This is the location from which you’ll begin your journey. Whether you’re starting from your current location or a specific address, Google Maps makes it easy to input this information.

To enter your starting point, click or tap on the search bar at the top of the screen and type in the address or name of the place. As you begin typing, Google Maps will suggest options based on your input, making it quicker to select the correct starting point.

If you’re starting from your current location, you can simply click or tap on the option that says “Your location” or select the icon that represents your current position. Google Maps will use your device’s GPS to determine your current location and set it as the starting point for your trip.

It’s worth noting that Google Maps also allows you to enter a point of interest as your starting point. This means you can select landmarks, attractions, or businesses as your starting point if you prefer. Simply type in the name or address of the place you want to start from, and Google Maps will recognize it.

Once you’ve entered your starting point, Google Maps will display it on the map and provide you with various route options. You can view these options, compare travel times, and select the one that suits your preferences. Now that your starting point is set, it’s time to move on to the next step: entering your destination.

Step 3: Enter Your Destination

After entering your starting point, the next step in setting your trip on Google Maps is to enter your destination. This is the location where you intend to reach at the end of your journey. Whether it’s a specific address, a landmark, or a point of interest, Google Maps makes it easy to input this information and find the best route to your destination.

To enter your destination, click or tap on the search bar at the top of the screen, just like in the previous step. Type in the address or name of the place you want to go to, and Google Maps will provide suggestions based on your input. As you start typing, the app will suggest addresses, landmarks, and businesses that match your search query, making it easier for you to select the correct destination.

You can also set a destination by clicking or tapping on the map itself. Simply find the location you want to go to, long-press or right-click on the map, and select the “Set as destination” option. Google Maps will then set that point as your destination and provide you with various routes to choose from.

Once you’ve entered your destination, Google Maps will display it on the map alongside your starting point. It will also show you the different route options available with estimated travel times. You can compare these routes, consider factors like traffic conditions and distance, and select the one that best suits your preferences.

Now that you’ve set your destination on Google Maps, it’s time to move on to the next step: choosing your mode of transportation.

Step 4: Choose Your Mode of Transportation

Once you’ve entered your starting point and destination, the next step in setting your trip on Google Maps is to choose your mode of transportation. Google Maps offers different options for travel, allowing you to customize your trip based on your preferred method of getting around.

To choose your mode of transportation, look for the icons or buttons representing different transportation options. Common modes of transportation available on Google Maps include driving, walking, public transit, cycling, and even ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft (availability may vary depending on your location).

If you prefer to drive, click or tap on the car or driving icon. Google Maps will calculate the route and provide you with turn-by-turn directions optimized for driving. It may also offer alternate routes to choose from, along with estimated travel times based on current traffic conditions.

If you prefer to walk, click or tap on the walking or pedestrian icon. Google Maps will generate a walking route for you and provide estimated travel times based on the distance and walking speed. This is a great option for exploring a new city on foot or for shorter distances.

For those who prefer to take public transit, click or tap on the transit or public transportation icon. Google Maps will display the available transit options in your area, including bus routes, train schedules, and subway lines. It will show you the nearest stations, departure times, and estimated travel times for each leg of your journey.

If you enjoy cycling, click or tap on the cycling or bicycle icon. Google Maps will generate a bike-friendly route for you, taking into account cycling lanes, bike-sharing stations, and other factors that make for a safe and enjoyable biking experience. It will also provide estimated travel times based on cycling speed.

If you prefer using ride-sharing services, such as Uber or Lyft, click or tap on the ride-sharing icon. Google Maps will show you the available ride-sharing options in your area, along with estimated fares and pick-up times. This is a convenient option for those who don’t want to drive or use public transit.

By choosing your mode of transportation, you can customize your trip on Google Maps to best suit your preferences or needs. Whether you’re driving, walking, taking public transit, cycling, or using ride-sharing services, Google Maps will provide you with the most efficient and convenient routes based on your chosen transportation method.

Now that you’ve selected your mode of transportation, it’s time to move on to the next step: customizing your trip on Google Maps.

Step 5: Customize Your Trip

Once you’ve chosen your mode of transportation, the next step in setting your trip on Google Maps is to customize it according to your preferences. Google Maps offers various options to tailor your journey and make it even more enjoyable and efficient.

Here are some ways you can customize your trip on Google Maps:

  • Add waypoints: If you have multiple stops or want to take a detour along the way, you can add waypoints to your route. Simply click or tap on the map at the desired location and select “Add stop” or “Add destination”. This allows you to plan your itinerary and include all the places you want to visit on your trip.
  • Avoid tolls or highways: If you prefer to avoid toll roads or highways, you can customize your route by selecting the appropriate options. In the directions settings, you will find checkboxes to avoid tolls, highways, or both. Google Maps will then calculate an alternative route that meets your preferences.
  • Explore nearby attractions: Google Maps offers a feature called “Explore” that allows you to discover nearby attractions, restaurants, cafes, and more. Simply click or tap on the search bar and select “Explore nearby”. You can then browse through various categories and see recommendations based on your location.
  • Save your favorite places: While planning your trip, you may come across interesting places that you want to remember for future reference. You can save these places on Google Maps by clicking or tapping on the location marker and selecting “Save”. This allows you to create personalized lists and access them later.
  • Share your trip: If you’re planning a trip with friends or family, you can easily share your trip details with them. Google Maps allows you to send your route, estimated arrival time, and even real-time location updates. Simply click or tap on the share button and select the desired sharing method.

By customizing your trip on Google Maps, you can make it more personalized and tailored to your specific needs. Whether you want to include extra stops, avoid certain roads, explore nearby attractions, save favorite places, or share your trip with others, Google Maps gives you the flexibility to do so.

Now that you’ve customized your trip, it’s time to move on to the final step: saving or sharing your trip on Google Maps.

Step 6: Save or Share Your Trip

Once you’ve planned and customized your trip on Google Maps, the final step is to save or share your trip. This allows you to access your trip details later or share them with others, making it easier to navigate and coordinate your journey.

Here are the options for saving or sharing your trip on Google Maps:

  • Save your trip: Saving your trip on Google Maps allows you to access it again at any time, even when you’re offline. To save your trip, click or tap on the menu icon (typically three horizontal lines) and select “Save”. You can then choose to save it as a named list, such as “My Road Trip” or “Weekend Getaway”. This way, you can easily revisit your trip details whenever you need to.
  • Share your trip: Sharing your trip with others is useful when you’re traveling with friends, coordinating with family, or simply providing directions to someone. To share your trip, click or tap on the share button and select the preferred sharing method, such as email, messaging apps, or social media. Mizoram Travel Guide

Last Updated on: Feb 10, 2023

Mizoram, also known as the Land of Blue Mountains and the Land of Lushai Highlanders is an exceptionally beautiful place. Covered with lush green forests, tourism in Mizoram is known for its breathtaking views from cliffs, stunning waterfalls and picturesque villages set amidst seas of morning mist that enfold the hills and peaks in its embrace. Here is our complete Mizoram Travel Guide that will help you to plan a trip to Mizoram. Mizoram runs at its own rhythm. This is what we understood on our week-long trip in Mizoram. Literally tucked in one corner of the country, tourism in Mizoram has not yet seen the rush. Thus the beautiful mountain villages and the verdant valleys beyond Aizawl remains quite a tempting destination for off-the-beaten-track travellers like us. The Mizos are friendly and helpful; they lead their life on their own terms.

Vantwang Waterfall - tourism in Mizoram

The hills of Mizoram are often shrouded in a perpetual mist and cloud. They look simply magnificent. Even at nights, you can see a layer of cloud hovering near the hills. That led us to think why this state was not called the abode of clouds! With diverse natural beauty and gorgeous countryside, the land of Lushai highlanders welcomed us with open arms. BUSY NOW? CLICK HERE TO PIN THIS FOR A LATER READ ! The plan to visit Mizoram was a sudden one. The time was during the October holidays and flights to Aizawl were at a sky-high price. So we decided to do a little detour to Aizawl. We reached Silchar and from there took a shared Sumo to Aizawl. It was a long journey, but Mizoram is worth all the trouble on the road.

Where is Mizoram located?

Mizoram is located in the southern corner of Northeast India and shares its borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. Assam, Manipur and Tripura are its neighbours in the Indian side.

The land of Lushai Highlanders

Mizoram has very interesting folklore about their origin. The majority of Mizo tribes believe that they had originated from Khul, a mythical cave in south China. Most of these beliefs were passed on oral traditions. These tribes then migrated towards Manipur and Assam and Myanmar. Mizo literally means highlanders and so Mizoram is practically the land of the Highlanders. Anthropologically, the Mizos belong to the Mongoloid race and were the original settlers in the Shan state of erstwhile Burma. Two of their tribes, the Lushais and the Hmars migrated to their present land crossing the Tiau River bordering western Burma in the early eighteenth century. After the Indian independence in 1947, Mizoram was originally a part of Assam. Later it became a union territory in 1971 and finally, Mizoram became the 23rd Indian State in 1987.

Handicraft of Mizoram

The Mizos are divided into several sub-tribes having their own dialect. In the past, the Mizos were animists and worshipped nature. Later with the advent of Christian missionaries, they embraced Christianity. Now, the majority of them are Christians and almost every village and city of Mizoram has a beautiful church. Infact, Aizawl can be called a city of churches, as we found so many of them there. The Mizos take their Sundays very seriously. Almost everything is closed on Sundays. The Mizos attend the church dressed in their best attires on Sunday morning and evening for mass and prayer. We arrived Aizawl on a Sunday when all the shops and market were closed, the sumo stand was also closed and we could not get any sumo to our next destination! But on the road, we saw pretty ladies and handsome men in their best dresses and suits. It reminded us of our stay at Shnongpdeng in Meghalaya .

Why should you visit Mizoram?

You should visit Mizoram because tourism in Mizoram is completely unadulterated and off the beaten track. The natural beauty of the state is unparalleled. Verdant rolling hills stretch across the horizon. Different shades of green gradually get toned down towards a bluish tint as you keep looking at them.  No wonder Mizoram is also known as the land of blue mountains. In the early morning, the mists from the valleys envelop the hills and mountains in such a way that it feels like a milky white sea. Mizoram also has a number of lakes and waterfalls. Come down to the valleys and you will see stretches of paddy fields surrounded by small hills.

Did you Know? Mizoram has 22 hill ranges of diverse heights.

The Mizos have a rich and culture and they are passionately drawn to singing and dances. The festivals are quite colourful and their songs and dances depict their joyful nature. With so many places to visit in Mizoram, I hope you will definitely find your reason to visit this remote state of India.

Mizoram Tourism | How to reach Mizoram?

The easiest way to reach Mizoram would be by taking a flight to Aizawl, the capital city. Aizawl is connected by direct flights from Kolkata, New Delhi and Guwahati. Other ways to reach Mizoram is long and tedious. Get your flight tickets done early because they usually get costly.

Guwahati to Aizawl If you do not want to spend on flights, then the next easy way is to reach by road. Overnight buses are available from Guwahati , almost 470 km away. Although Google Maps will show you that it takes about 15 hours to cover this distance, rest assured, buses will take almost 20 -22 hours to reach. Buses to Aizawl are available from the ASTC  Bust stand near Guwahati Railway Station and ISBT, Guwahati. I know people who have spent almost 24 hours on the bus. Roads on mountains are highly unpredictable and so keeping buffer time is highly recommended. Shared sumos are also available from Guwahati to Aizawl.

Silchar Airport

Silchar to Aizawl You can also reach Aizawl from Silchar, Assam. Shared sumos are available from Silchar Sumo Stand just opposite to the Mizoram House in Silchar. The distance between Silchar to Aizawl is about 175 km. Here again, do not get fooled by the time G-maps show you. We had taken this route to Aizawl. Sumo takes about 7-8 hours to Aizawl. Sumos from Silchar to Aizawl is available at 6.30 AM, 11.30 AM, 3 PM and 6 PM. The times are subjected to changes. We arrived at Silchar from Kolkata in the morning and took the sumo at 11.30 AM. The journey started at 12 noon and we reached at 9.30 PM. But our sumo had broken down just 10 km before reaching Aizawl town and we lost about an hour there. Even then, keep aside 7-8 hours for this ride. The conditions of the road are fine as long as it is in Assam. The last stretch of roads to Aizawl is quite bumpy. There are other ways to reach Mizoram as well. From the Silchar stand, we saw sumos available to Champhai and Kolasib as well.

Sumo to Champhai - Tourism in Mizoram

There are sumos available from Imphal, Manipur to Aizawl as well. But we heard the road conditions to be very bad. There is absolutely no guarantee when you would reach your destination and the ride is very bumpy. If you are coming from Manipur to Mizoram, I would suggest you make the journey via Silchar. Take a sumo from Imphal to Silchar and then another one to Aizawl. You might take a little more time, but the journey will be a bit better. By Train There are no railways in Mizoram. The nearest railway station is at Silchar in Assam. From Silchar, take the sumo as I mentioned in the earlier para.

Mizoram Tourism | Getting around Mizoram

Mizoram has a hilly terrain, so some of the roads are not at all good. Mizoram does have a robust sumo service. Almost all the major towns and district headquarters are connected by daily sumos that leave at regular intervals. The villages are also connected by sumo, but their numbers are generally very less. Mizoram is also one of the northeast states where we found that sumos ply also in the night time. And believe me, they are quite safe. We ourselves were a bit sceptical about the night sumo, having known about the treacherous road conditions of the mountains. But believe, the night sumos in Mizoram are quite safe. We had taken night sumo from Champhai to Aizawl and later from Aizawl to Silchar. As far as we had heard, accidents usually do not happen.

How to get around Mizoram

So from Aizawl, you will get sumo to almost all the major towns and destinations of Mizoram like Champhai, Thenzawl, Kolasib, Lunglei, Saiha, Serchip, Lawngtlai etc. Sumos are available from Zarkawt Main Street. There are a number of Sumo counters on the street. Just go to one and book your tickets from there. From Zarkawt , there is a flight of stairs that comes down to the market area. Sumos from Champhai are available from there. Wherever you want to go, just go to any sumo counter and ask about the place. They will help you with the time, fare and other details of the sumo. From Zarkawt, you will also get sumos to Silchar. However, sumos to Guwahati is available from some other stand. But there is a sumo counter right at Zarkawt. There is the bus counter also from where you will get bus tickets for Guwahati. While considering our return option, we asked about the bus service. The buses leave at around 2.30 PM and reach Guwahati not before 11.30 the next morning. Volvo buses are available . We saw a couple of them on the road. Renting cars in Mizoram Renting cars in Mizoram can be quite a costly affair. It is unlikely that you will get a small car for rent. Mostly, SUVs are available and they charge Rs30-35 per km. So if you have your own car, it is well and good, otherwise, be ready to pay the high price.

Tourism in Mizoram

Nevertheless, sumo services in Mizoram between the main towns are quite reliable. Try to get the seats in the front or second row. The third row becomes a bit uncomfortable for people having long legs like me! A word of caution: For going offbeat destinations and villages, get to know about your sumo timings beforehand. Also, go to the counter, meet the driver or any representative and get your seats booked. I am telling you this from our personal experience. I will narrate the experience later. Bike taxis in Aizawl Aizawl has a fleet of bike taxis, i.e there are riders on scooty who will take you to your destinations. They usually charge about Rs20 -30 depending on the destination. But they can ask more from tourists.

Do you need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Mizoram?

Yes, you would need Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Mizoram .  And no, you would not get it online . Indian tourists need Inner Line permit to visit Mizoram and they can be obtained from Liason Officer in Mizoram House in Kolkata, Silchar, Shillong, Guwahati and New Delhi. ILP can also be obtained from Lengpui Airport at Aizawl, Mizoram for tourists coming in by flight. Tourists entering from Bairabi and Vairengte can obtain ILP from Sub-Deputy Commissioner, Bairabi and Sub-Divisional Officer Vairengte respectively.

Filled up ILP form for Mizoram

You will need to fill up the ILP form and submit copies of your ID and address proof and two sets of passport-sized photographs. ILP Fees : Rs.120 (Rs.20 for the form and Rs.100 Processing fees). Please note, that citizens of Assam need to show the NRC certificate while obtaining ILP. Validity of ILP: Well, on the website, it is written that ILP can be obtained for 15 days and renewed for another 15 days. But the reality is a bit different. Let me tell you about our experience of getting a Mizoram ILP.

Getting Mizoram ILP

We applied at the Mizoram House at Kolkata located at Singhi Castle Building at Gariahat Road.  I had already downloaded the ILP form from the website , filled it up with the details to submit it there. But there I was told I have to fill it up in the form provided by them. So again I filled up the form and submitted to the officer at Mizoram House. Here again, I arrived at the office at 1 PM. The officer there told me that ILP form can be submitted only till 12 PM. After much request and apologies, she took my form. I had requested for an ILP for 10 days. But there again I was told that ILP will be given only for 7 days. You usually get the ILP on the next working day. However, I think the officer took pity on me and arranged for the ILP on the same day. The Mizoram Houses remains closed on Saturday, Sundays and Public Holidays. If by any chance, you have not got your ILP done, you can get your ILP also at Vairengte Checkpost. Our sumo from Silchar stopped at the Vairengte Gate. There were a few passengers who did not have ILP. But getting ILP from the Vairengte Checkpost is a long process. For 3 passengers, we had to wait for almost 1.5 hours there. Further, the officials here want details of your sponsorship. It becomes difficult to make them understand that a tour is self-sponsored. There was a guy in motorbike who was getting his ILP from the checkpost. He had a hard time getting the ILP. And the passengers from Assam who did not have their NRC certificate were simply denied ILP.

Vairengte Checkpost - you can get Mizoram ILP from here

Getting the ILP renewed

If you want to stay for more than 7 days, you need to get your ILP renewed. Renewal can be done at District Commissioner’s Office located at Treasury Square, Aizawl. We went to the Champhai DC office to renew our ILP. There again, we got a new form, filled it up and submitted again (also paid another Rs 140). We wanted to renew for 7 days, but there they renewed the ILP for only 3 days! The lady there simply told us that they cannot renew the ILP for more than 3 days. Fancy wasting an entire day for getting only 3 days permit! I am not quite sure what happen in Aizawl Office. But will you come back to Aizawl again to renew the ILP? So I will recommend you to get different ILPs for your dates. Having said all these, our ILP was not checked even once in our entire trip, even at the checkpost. But the irony is you need to have an ILP. I often wonder why would I need to get a permit to travel within my own country. Even if I had to, I wish the process was easier and online as the ILP in Arunachal Pradesh. For Foreign tourists Foreign tourists no longer require Protected Area Permit for Nagaland. However, they must register themselves at the local Foreigner Registration Office (FRO) of the districts they visit within 24 hours of arrival. But residents of Pakistan, Afghanistan and China are still banned from visiting the PAP restricted area.

Our Mizoram Itinerary

Day 1 | Kolkata – Silchar (by flight) – Aizawl (Sumo) We started from Kolkata, reached Silchar by flight. Flight to Silchar was really cheap compared to Aizawl. Silchar Airport is a small one located quite away from the main town. ASTC buses are available from the airport to the main town. There is an ASTC Bus Counter at Silchar Airport. Otherwise, you can hire a car from the airport to the town and you will cross through the beautiful and green tea gardens of Assam before entering the small town of Silchar. The car fare is Rs1000.

View of Aizawl city

The Sumo stand is just opposite the Mizoram House at Silchar. We booked our sumo tickets, had our lunch and started our journey towards Mizoram at 12 PM. We reached Aizawl at around 9.30 PM after our car breakdown. It was my second car breakdown after Basar .

Day 2 | Aizawl This was a Sunday and so everything was closed in Aizawl. We stayed in the city, roamed around the streets visited the churches and admired the handsome men and beautiful ladies. Later in the afternoon, we visited K V Paradise and Solomon’s Temple.

K V Paradise, Aizawl - Mizoram tourism

Day 3 | Aizawl – Champhai We took a sumo early in the morning to Champhai. We reached in the afternoon. Champhai is an extremely beautiful place connected to tourism Mizoram. Located near the Indo-Myanmar border, Champhai district is also known as the Rice Bowl of Mizoram . The place is full of green paddy fields and is so pleasing to the eyes. We stayed at the Champhai Tourist Lodge .

Rice fields at Champhai, Mizoram tourism

Day 4 | Champhai – Zokawthar – Rih Dil (Myanmar) – Champhai The main attraction of Champhai is definitely the Rih Dil, a lake situated in Myanmar but revered by the Mizos. Zokawthar is the border town just like Moreh in India. We had not thought that after crossing the Indo- Myanmar border last year, we would again visit Myanmar , even though it is only for some time.

In the morning, we took shared sumo to Zokawthar. From there, we crossed the border bridge across the Tiau River. The River forms the natural boundary between the two countries. On crossing the boundary, we had to keep our Adhaar cards with the border security of Myanmar. While we were wondering on how to go to Rih Dil , we found that scooty are available that will take you to the Lake. The distance is hardly 3-4 km and we rode on the back of the rider and they dropped us to Rih Dil, waited there and also brought us back. The scooty took Rs250 per head.

Rih Dil is the most important lake in Mizoram but is located in Myanmar

After our visit to Rih Dil, we came back to Champhai and visited the wine factory. We wanted to see the vineyards, but it was not the season. The vines were all dried up. So we scrapped the plan. If you want to see the vines in season, visit during August.

Day 5 | Champhai – Aizawl We explored Champai area on foot and also went to the DC office to get our ILP renewed. We were supposed to leave for Vangchhia in the afternoon. Well, then the sumo fiasco happened!

Markets of Champhai

Our sumo fiasco It so happened, that we were at Champhai and had planned to visit Vangchhia next. We asked a local person about sumo to Vangchhia and he gave us the phone number of the sumo driver. We called him, but could not understand a word of what he said. He was speaking in his own dialect and did not understand English. So we again got hold of another local and asked him to talk to the sumo driver on our behalf. He talked with him and told us that sumo to Vangchhia is available the next day and it will pick us up from Champhai Tourist Lodge at 1 PM. So we were quite happy that our next sumo was arranged and we did not have to visit the sumo counter. But that was the mistake we made. What happened the next day was totally uncalled for. The next morning, we requested the manager cum cook cum caretaker of the Champhai tourist lodge to speak to the Vangchhia sumo driver to confirm. He spoke to the driver and got the confirmation. So we checked out of the tourist lodge at 12 PM and were waiting for our sumo. It was going to pick us up from the Tourist Lodge itself. It was 1 PM, then 1.30, the sumo did not arrive yet. I started calling on the drivers’ number and he did not pick up the call. It was 2 PM and then 3 PM, yet no news of the sumo driver and he refused to pick up our calls. We were in Champhai for already 2 days, our next plans were almost fixed and we checked out of the lodge too. We were just sitting at the lobby with our backpacks without knowing what to do. Finally We called up at the Aizawl sumo counter (the number we got while coming to Champhai). They told us that the sumo to Vangchhia already left. Well, he went without taking us! It took us a moment to sink in. So that day, we have nowhere to go and we have to also look for a place to stay. I called up the sumo counter again to ask about the next day’s sumo. And he had another bad news for us. The next day, there was some sumo owners’ convention and so no sumos will be running! Well, now that was another problem as our leaves were limited! I think I sounded really sad and desperate on the phone. The person on the other end suggested that we might consider going to Aizawl that night itself as night sumos to Aizawl were available. We were a bit sceptical to take the night sumo but then decided to take it. We asked him to book two seats for us in the sumo. This time also, the guy at the sumo counter said whether he will pick us up from the Tourist Lodge. I almost shouted “No”. Once bitten, twice shy. I am not going to repeat the mistake. So we took our baggage and went straight to the sumo counter in the market area. We bought our tickets, identified our sumo and finally sat down after taking a long breath! Whoa! What a day of misadventures! Vangchhia was cancelled for this trip.

Mizoram Itinerary

The road to Thenzawl goes through a place where the Tropic of Cancer passes through . The sumo driver was good enough to stop the sumo there for some time so that we can take some photographs. He was so good after the one who stranded us at Champhai. We reached Thenzawl and booked a car there and visited the Vantwang Falls and the Tuirihiau Falls .

Vantwang Falls in Thenzawl Mizoram Tourism

Vantwang Falls is a vision. You cannot really go close to the waterfall and have to see it from a distance at the viewpoint. Even from a distance, it looks amazing. Tuirihiau falls is special because we could go behind the falls. Both of them were extremely gorgeous. From Thenzawl, we came back to Hmuifang. We had a hard time getting sumo for Hmuifang as it was almost late. We had to wait a long time before we got a car that dropped us to Hmuifang. Hmuifang is a small hill station and has some great views of the mountains and valleys. Hmuifang lies between Aizawl and Thenzawl. We stayed at the Hmuifang Tourist Lodge for the night. Day 7 | Hmuifang – Aizawl Early mornings in Hmuifang is beautiful with the mist rolling in and clouds hanging over the hills. We felt that we could spend the entire day there simply looking at the clouds coming and going. There is not much to do here. This is a place to relax. And well, we enjoyed the stay after all our hectic sumo journeys. Later in the afternoon, we returned to Aizawl.

Hmuifang Tourist Lodge Mizoram tourism

Here again, we found it difficult to get a vehicle for Aizawl a bit difficult. All the sumos that were coming from Thenzawl or Serchhip were already full. We had to wait a long time before we got 2 seats in sumo. Day 8 | Aizawl – Reiek – Aizawl So we had another day and we decided to give a visit to Reiek. We hired a car for Reiek as we could not find any proper public vehicle for Reiek that would suit our time.

Reiek Peak Mizoram Tourism

Reiek is another delightful place and is also the venue of the Anthurium festival. The festival was celebrated just a few days back and so Reiek was decorated quite beautifully. A model Mizo village was also built for the visitors there. We climbed up Reiek Peak and took a visit to the model village. After that, we were back at Aizawl. From Aizawl, we took night sumo to Silchar. Now that we had already done a night journey, we had no qualms in doing it again. The only problem that we faced was that the sumo dropped us at Silchar at 3.00 AM and our train to Agartala was at 8 AM. We had to wait for 5 long hours at the railway station which did not even have a proper waiting room.

Mizoram Tourism | Where to stay?

The best places to stay in Mizoram are Tourist Lodges run by Mizoram Tourism department. They are located at strategic locations and are quite cheaper compared to hotels. Aizawl has a number of hotels, but we found the hotel rent to be comparatively higher compared to the service and standard. Well, the Mizoram is quite remote and understandably the cost of living is higher here. There is a travellers Inn at Aizawl that has single rooms for Rs350. But the hostel is quite basic. Champhai also has a few hotels.

Mizoram Tourism | What is the best time to visit?

You can visit Mizoram throughout the year. The best time will be between October to March. The monsoon season should be avoided as the roads get treacherous during the rains.

Tourism in Mizoram & Travel Guide (FAQ’s Answered)

Q. Is it safe to travel in Mizoram?

Mizoram is absolutely safe to travel. The people are friendly and there are usually no issues in the state.

Q. How is mobile and internet connectivity?

The main cities and town have proper mobile and internet connectivity. Vodafone and Jio work fine there. The remote places do not have proper connectivity though. We did not have any mobile connectivity at Hmuifang and a very poor one at Reiek and Thenzawl.

Q. Is permit required to visit Mizoram?

Yes, ILP is required to visit Mizoram. It has been already covered. Q. Are there ATMs in Mizoram? The main towns have a number of ATMs. We found sufficient ATMs in Aizawl, Thenzawl and Champhai. Reiek and Huifang did not have any ATM.

Q.How is the local transport in Mizoram?

You need to take a sumo to travel across Mizoram. The sumo services are quite robust and covers almost all the areas of the state. In Aizawl, taxis and bike taxis are available for commuting. We even saw a few buses, but they were less in number.

Q. How is the food? Is vegetarian food available?

The food is quite tasty. The best thing we found in Mizoram is community dining. The hotels (I am not talking about fancy restaurants here) will provide a sumptuous meal at a fixed rate. All the places we ate on the road charged Rs150 per head. A table would have 6-8 chairs. They would provide a large array of dishes on a table and all the people sitting at the table would have to eat together. They would fill up the bowls and dishes again with food if it finished. You can eat as much as you want. But you have to eat together with a few strangers on the road. I found this concept of community eating quite interesting.

Food in Mizoram

Q. What to carry in Mizoram?

Carry your ID cards and keep it safe. As for clothes, do carry some woollens and jackets whenever you plan to visit Mizoram. And in winters do carry sufficient woollens and scarves.

Q. Is Mizoram expensive?

Travelling in Mizoram by rented car is a tad bit expensive. Hotels also are expensive compared to the price of the room. We had travelled across Mizoram in shared sumos and stayed at the Tourist Lodges. They are fairly priced. We had food at the local restaurants and as we mentioned before, these places provide a meal for Rs150 per head which consists of chicken, pork, rice and vegetables in a large amount.

Q. What are other places of interest in Mizoram?

Mizoram is known as the land of the Blue Mountains . And this Blue Mountain can be seen at Lawngtlai. The Phawngpui Peak is the highest peak in Mizoram and is known as the Blue mountain. Another interesting place is Tam Dil , a lake located in Saitual, a village, about 110 km from Aizawl. Vangchhia , the place that we missed is known for its archaeological findings. A lot of menhirs had been found there that might have a link with Mizoram’s past. Vangchhia is located near Champhai.

View of Aizawl City

Q. Anything else that we should know?

  • Mizoram practically remains full closed on Sunday. Fewer sumos run on Sundays. So plan your trip and itinerary accordingly.
  • The local people are no doubt very good and honest. But for renting cars, bike taxis etc from the road, they quote a high amount, that they usually do not charge from the local population. Like the other states, they also try to get a maximum amount from the tourists. So you have to bargain with the taxi drivers and bike taxi drivers for a fair price.

Mizoram is really a beautiful and interesting place. Take time to visit this northeast state of India. You might not find the best of infrastructure here, but the experience will be worth all your trouble. We also faced a few problems with the ILP, sumo service and all, but all these are a part of travel. Inspite of all these, we loved Mizoram and would visit the place again. We will also recommend you to take a visit to the land of the Lushai Highlanders. Did you like the post? Please let us know in comments below. Pin this for a later read!!

VIKING LODGE LOCATION

The Viking Lodging is a sought after location for many visitors due to its affordability, location and amenities. The Viking is located on W. Pacific, just a stone’s throw from Clarkʼs Market (the biggest grocery store in town). Right across the street from the complex is the Wine Mine, Siam Thai and the always popular ‘There’ Bar. The Medical Center is within 200 yards or less of the complex. All of the shops, bars and restaurants are under 10 minutes walk away. The gondola is 3 blocks to the east and Lift 7 is about 200 yards to the west. If you donʼt feel like walking there is a free shuttle, the Galloping Goose, with pick-up/drops-off  for passengers on the corner of the Viking Lodge (W. Pacific and S. Davis St.) It makes a loop through town every 10-15 minutes with plenty of stops at various locations along the way, including the gondola and Colorado Avenue.

During the Telluride Film Festival, venues are scattered throughout town and getting to them is easy from this centrally located complex. The beauty of the Viking Lodge during festivals is that it is not a very long walk, but just long enough to get out of the action when you need respite. There are numerous hiking and biking trails that can be accessed from the Viking Lodge.

Ski Access There is a very short walk from the Viking Lodge to Lift 7, the Coonskin lift, roughly 200 steps depending on the length of oneʼs stride. The Lift 7 base area offers easy access to the ski runs and a full service ski shop, as well as a ticket window (open 9am – 4pm). If you prefer to take the free gondola up and over to Mountain Village or access the ski runs, it is a quick walk of about 6-7 minutes, or you can take the Galloping Goose from the street corner of the complex, which will make a stop at the gondola station every 10-15 minutes. As a suggestion for those who are too tired after a day of skiing/snowboarding or for beginner skiers and young children, you may find it easier to end your day by hopping on the gondola in Mountain Village over to Town of Telluride, taking advantage of the Galloping Goose for the ride back to the complex.

Telluride is the definition of a “walkable” town. Its official borders total a tiny 2.22 square miles. For some exercise, get around on foot or on bike. If you’re leaving town or have a load of shopping, cruise the streets in your rental vehicle. For a unique form of transportation, the free Galloping Goose shuttle touches nearly all of those 2.22 square miles.

What Is There to Do in Summer?

Telluride is the self-proclaimed Summer Festival Capital of Colorado. Plan your stay around your favorite celebration. We celebrate music like bluegrass, Americana, jazz, and others. The Baseball Festival hits fun out of the park each year. We offer other interesting celebrations as well, including Telluride Art + Architecture, mushrooms, yoga, and the popular Telluride Film Festival. If you want to avoid the festival crowds, try hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, or a variety of other fun and exciting activities more suitable for the warmer temperatures of the summer.

Are Your Rentals Self-Check-In?

Yes! There’s no lobby, front desk, or other location to pick up keys or other items to get into the home. You will receive a code to open the main entrance to the home once your booking is confirmed. Settle in, and when you’re ready to start your Telluride adventure, you’ll continue to use this code to secure the home.

Are Your Rentals Close to Activities & Attractions?

Absolutely! The size of Telluride puts you close to all the fun you’ve come to enjoy. You won’t have to go far for amazing shopping, dining, and many of the other activities and attractions Telluride is known for. The free Galloping Goose shuttle is an excellent way to get everywhere quickly!

Categories for lodging businesses

Different types of hotels and vacation rentals

Google uses different categories to help people understand what kind of lodging they’ll find at a given location. By picking the right category for your business, you can help the right customers find you.

Lodging accommodations fall into 3 distinct categories: hotels, vacation rentals, or outdoor lodging.

You can determine your lodging category by asking these questions. Does your business:

  • Have a front desk or on-site management?
  • Accept overnight guests?
  • Have their property and business address listed publicly?

If you answer “yes” to all of these questions, your business is a hotel or a related category. If you answer “no” to any of these questions, your business is likely a vacation rental or outdoor lodging.

If you don't know if your lodging business is a hotel, vacation rental, or outdoor lodging, check the categories below to find the best fit for your business.

Hotel properties on Google

For your hotel property to be eligible on Google, your business should be able to accept overnight guests and must have a front desk and a manager or owner on-site. Your property should also have your business address and property name listed publicly.

Vacation rental (VR) properties on Google

For your vacation rental property to be eligible on Google, your property must provide a furnished space that’s private to the guest who’s renting it. A vacation rental must also accept short-term, overnight reservations and be managed and cleaned in-between stays.

Vacation rental (VR) categories

Outdoor lodging on google.

Outdoor lodging properties with an open area for tents or a simple roof and walls where guests can sleep are eligible on Google. An outdoor lodging property doesn’t have climate control or indoor plumbing in the units, but it may have them in shared facilities, like communal washrooms.

Below, you’ll also find important logistical information, answers to frequently asked questions, and, of course, beautiful photos to get you excited for your trip.

Driving Big Sur road trip itinerary

What Is Big Sur?

To kick off this road trip planner , let’s go over a little overview of Big Sur.

It’s not a village, town, or city, so what exactly is Big Sur?

It’s actually a scenic region that encompasses the stunning stretch of California’s central coast that goes for about 90 miles between Carmel and San Simeon.

It’s known for its astounding beauty as you witness the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the rocky Pacific Ocean coastline, with the narrow Highway 1 – Pacific Coast Highway winding through it and offering many places to stop off for hiking, photography, swimming, and enjoying a delicious meal with a rugged natural view.

History of Big Sur

According to the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce , historically Big Sur was simply called El Sur Grande or “The Big South” in reference to the fact that it showcased raw and uncharted wilderness.

Originally the land here was inhabited by the Esselen, Salinan, and Ohlone Native Americans, though it was eventually taken from them by Spanish explorers (though luckily in 2020 the Esselen Tribe regained back some of this ancestral land ).

In the 1830s, certain parcels of the land were given to Mexico; however, these were never permanently settled.

Around the turn of the century is really when you see homesteaders arriving to create permanent settlements on the land. Many of the Big Sur attractions you see today are named after these settlers — like Pfeiffer Ridge, Post Summit, and Cooper Point.

In 1937, Highway 1 officially opened, bringing California’s first Scenic Highway to life. Driving the Big Sur coast is truly an unforgettable experience, as you’ll see below.

As there isn’t cell service along Highway 1 Big Sur, I recommend plotting out your destination points before leaving your hotel so you can pull them up when offline.

Alternatively, I’ve pre-plotted all of the 21 below destinations into a ready-to-download Big Sur road trip map in Google Map form, which you can grab inside of the my Ultimate Travel Planning Kit here .

How To Get To Big Sur

Now, when it comes to getting to Big Sur, there are a number of options.

Most people drive to Big Sur and stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey, or in the heart of Big Sur itself. Since you’ll need a car anyway to do your road trip through Big Sur, this typically makes the most sense.

Note that the closest airport to Big Sur is the Monterey Regional Airport , which is about 31 miles away, and the closest international airport is the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport in San Jose, which is about 104 miles away.

If you don’t have a car, it’s recommended to book a guided tour — like a Big Sur Monterey California Coast McWay Falls One Day Tour from San Jose.

Alternatively, you can take the Monterey-Salinas Transit Line 22 from Carmel or Monterey, which will take you all the way to Nepenthe Restaurant when heading south. I discuss Nepenthe below as a must-visit stop on your Big Sur itinerary!

Just note that the Monterey-Salinas Transit Lines stop running during certain seasons, holidays, and inclement weather conditions, so your best bet is really to drive yourself.

Best Time To Visit Big Sur

Thanks to its location on the Pacific Ocean, Big Sur has a temperate climate that makes it a year-round destination. That being said, not all seasons are created equal.

Spring. The highlight of visiting in spring is the gorgeous wildflowers along the trails and coast, making the stop-offs mentioned below even more stunning.

Summer. You’ll enjoy beautiful weather and loads of tours and activities; however, this is also the busiest and most expensive time to visit.

Fall. Late September through early November is widely considered to be the best time to visit. Despite cooler temperatures, the crowds disappear and you can enjoy the beauty of Big Sur in solitude.

Winter. Winter is Big Sur’s rainy season, which can also mean mudslides. Still, you might truly have the place all to yourself and hotel prices will likely be lower than during other times of year.

How Long To Make Your Big Sur Road Trip Itinerary

You can absolutely have an amazing time with 1 day in Big Sur. That being said, you won’t be able to hit all of the stops mentioned below, especially as a number of them are big California state parks and hiking trails.

In my opinion, you’ll want to have a minimum of 3 days in Big Sur for the best experience.

Big Sur Road Trip Itinerary Overview

In the next section I’ll list out all of the stops you should make along your Big Sur scenic drive. I recommend taking your time and not trying to pack everything into one day.

Here is a quick overview of how I recommend breaking up the stops into a Big Sur 3 day itinerary . If you have the time, extending the amount of days allows for a slower pace where you can really soak in the beauty of Big Sur.

By the way, Big Sur is one of best places for solo female travel in California for a safe, fun, and scenic trip.

Big Sur Road Trip Day #1: Explore Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a California travel destination in itself, and one can easily spend a few days here. Enjoy the delicious restaurants, see the fairytale cottages, wander the many art galleries, and spend time on the beautiful Carmel Beach.

Moreover, you can visit nearby attractions like Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and/or Garrapata State Park.

Big Sur Road Trip Day #2: Explore Big Sur State Parks, Beaches & Viewpoints

Use today to really drive Highway 1 and explore the many parks, hiking trails, beaches, and viewpoints. End the day with a meal and a view at Nepenthe Restaurant.

Big Sur Road Trip Day #3: Driving Big Sur To San Simeon & Paso Robles

Continue driving Highway 1 to visit the stops beyond Nepenthe, like Julia Pfeiffer State Park, Sand Dollar Beach, and Ragged Point.

Then head to San Simeon to see a beach full of giant elephant seals and then even further to continue your trip exploring wine country and hot springs in Paso Robles. I recommend spending at least 3 days in Paso Robles to really get a feel for the destination.

Big Sur Road Trip Stops (In Order)

On that note, let’s dive into our Big Sur trip itinerary . Again, these are some of the best stops when driving Highway 1 Big Sur, listed in order from north to south:

Stop #1: Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a great starting point for your Big Sur road trip itinerary. In fact, you have the option to base here the entire time (I recommend the Carmel River Inn !) or switch hotels your second night and stay at a place like the Big Sur Lodge in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, which is a stop on our route.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a quaint seaside city full of locally-owned shops, delicious restaurants, charming cafes, fairytale cottages, and almost 100 art galleries.

Of course, make sure to do a DIY art gallery crawl while you’re there. Interestingly, Carmel-by-the-Sea is home to the Thomas Kinkade Gallery — his first ever! There is a lovely courtyard with paintings as well as an indoor gallery full of his works.

In terms of tours, one not-to-miss is a self-guided audio tour of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s famous Fairytale Houses . Also known as the Comstock Cottages , the tour takes you to 11 of these whimsical abodes and shares interesting information about each.

You also can’t miss spending time on the gorgeous Carmel Beach , a long white-sand beach popular for sunbathing, swimming, surfing, and dog-walking. You will absolutely see many adorable pups splashing in the waves and rolling in the sand.

Visiting Carmel Beach when driving Big Sur

Finally, there are loads of mouthwatering restaurants, a few of which include:

– From Scratch . Head here for breakfast and order the From Scratch Skillet, a hearty helping of potatoes, eggs, cheese, and your choice of three additions. They even have vegan sausage! You also get thick slabs of toast or their homemade cheddar biscuit.

– Mulligan’s Public House . It’s not easy to find good budget-friendly places to eat in Carmel, but Mulligans fits that bill with outstanding service, delicious food, and a mean Bloody Mary (get the bacon bloody!). At our waitress’ recommendation, my husband Andy and I ordered the shrimp tacos — substitute fries for onion rings — and it was outstanding. I also ordered a salmon salad for $18 that had a nice big piece of fish!

– Tree House Cafe . This beautiful eatery fuses Mediterranean, Greek, and Thai cuisines in a lovely indoor restaurant that also has a giant elevated outdoor terrace. Andy and I ordered the seafood pasta and baked calamari and both were delicious!

– Basil Seasonal Dining . This delicious Italian eatery serves up a delectable short rib and the bruschetta with burrata is not to be missed!

– La Bicyclete . We were told by multiple tourists and locals that the French-focused Michelin-starred Le Bicyclete is a must — and after eating the food ourselves, it’s easy to see why. Their gnocchi is extra large and pillowy, while the truffle mushroom pizza is rich and delicious.

– Hog’s Breath Inn . Formerly owned by Clint Eastwood — who was once the mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea — this tasty restaurant and bar has a warm and inviting feeling with fireplaces, indoor/outdoor seating, and even a doggy menu if you bring your pup!

Stop at From Scratch while driving Big Sur for a delicious breakfast

Stop #2: Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Driving time from Carmel-by-the-Sea to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve = 10 minutes

You can’t visit Big Sur without exploring the outdoors, and hiking is a great way to do this — especially as the area is home to some of the world’s best hiking trails .

If you love hiking, wildlife, and being outdoors but don’t necessarily want to trek up a mountain or be gasping for breath, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is for you.

This Monterey County state reserve, which is dedicated to protecting the unique natural beauty and ecological significance of the area, showcases 5.36 square miles of land to explore, including numerous easy flat trails offering coastal views and opportunities to spot wildlife like pelicans, sea lions, and sea otters.

One popular hike is the 5-mile Point Lobos Loop Trail , which follows the coast of the reserve.

For something shorter but still very scenic, I really enjoyed our hike down the South Plateau Trail to the Bird Island Trail and along the South Shore Trail to Sea Lion Cove and the Sea Lion Point Trail . From there, we took the Lace Lichen Trail to get back to where we started.

The entry fee is $10 per vehicle and free to walk-ins.

Add Point Lobos State Natural Reserve to a Big Sur road trip itinerary

Stop #3: Garrapata State Park & Vista Point

Driving time from Point Lobos State Natural Reserve to Garrapata State Park = 7 minutes

Showcasing 4.6 square miles of coastal trails and beachfront, this is a great place to take in some of the most incredible views along Highway 1. Actually, you won’t find signage for the park and there isn’t an entry fee; instead, you’ll access the various trails and viewpoints right from the highway.

One fun hike is the Soberanes Canyon Trail , a 2.8-mile out-and-back trail that takes you from Highway 1 down toward the coast along Soberanes Creek, through redwoods, and passed a waterfall. Note that this trail is typically a loop trail but is now an out-and-back trail due to hazardous conditions.

You can also follow a 1.8-mile trail from the Soberanes Point Trails Trailhead to Soberanes Point , a beautiful secluded beach with outstanding coastal headlands, and Whale Peak , a hilltop offering an incredible coastal vista.

For something easy, the Garrapata Bluff Trail is a 0.6-mile out-and-back hike known for its amazing coastal views and gorgeous wildflowers in spring. You can access the trail from Gate #7 or #8 in the park.

Stop #4: Kasler Point

Driving time from Garrapata State Park to Kasler Point = 5 minutes

Ready for another view? Located near Garrapata Creek , Kasler Point is a cape offering a spectacular view that blends mountains sloping down toward the sea covered in lush green flora and beautiful flowers with waves lapping up over a rocky coast.

Stop #5: Rocky Creek Bridge

Driving time from Kasler Point to Rocky Creek Bridge = 3 minutes

While you’ve probably heard of Bixby Bridge, Rocky Creek Bridge is another gorgeous bridge worth pulling over for.

Built in 1932, it’s an open-spandrel arch bridge made of concrete and is stunning against the Pacific Ocean and lush vegetation blanketing the sloping hillside around it. Look down to also see the beautiful Rocky Creek Beach .

When driving Big Sur you'll definitely want to stop off at Rocky Creek Bridge

Stop #6: Bixby Creek Bridge

Driving time from Rocky Creek Bridge to Bixby Creek Bridge = 1 minute

Also known as Bixby Canyon Bridge, this iconic Big Sur attraction dates back to November 1932 when it first opened to the public.

Interestingly, it was named after a pioneer from New York named Charles H. Bixby who traveled to the California coast in 1852 and absolutely fell in love with it.

Due to its unique design featuring an open-spandrel arch bridge made of concrete, it’s one of the most photographed bridges in California.

Near to the bridge, you’ll find several scenic overlooks for snapping the perfect photo. Visiting is one of the top things to do in Big Sur !

Visiting Bixby Bridge while driving through Big Sur

Stop #7: Hurricane Point

Driving time from Bixby Creek Bridge to Hurricane Point = 2 minutes

Hurricane Point is one of the highest points along Highway 1 Big Sur at 560 feet. It’s a great spot for photos — especially as if you look to the north you can get Bixby Bridge in your shot!

Stop #8: Andrew Molera State Park

Driving time from Rocky Creek Bridge to Andrew Molera State Park = 13 minutes

If you love raw landscapes, the 4,766-acre Andrew Molera State Park features mostly undeveloped land. This is because the former owner, Frances Molera, dreamed of keeping the landscape in its natural state.

In the park, you’ll find miles of trails leading you to stunning beaches, through expansive meadows, over sloping hillsides, and along ridges offering scenic Big Sur views .

One major highlight of the park is the 40-foot Highbridge Falls , a year-round waterfall.

Additionally, a few hiking trails worth checking out include:

  • Bluffs Trail. This easy trail is 1.7 miles one-way and takes you along the bluffs of Big Sur where you can gaze down at the beach and Pacific Ocean.
  • Spring Trail. This short trail connects with the Bluffs Trail to take you down to Molera Beach if you’d to get closer to the water.
  • Ridge Trail. For something strenuous but worth the effort, you’ll love the views along this 3.2-mile one-way walk that ascends a ridge.
  • Ridge Trail – Panorama Trail – Bluff Trail. Again, strenuous, but this 8.7-mile loop hike offers all of the quintessential Big Sur scenery you could want, including redwoods, beaches, rocky coastline, and hillsides covered in lush vegetation.

The entry fee is $10 per car.

Andrew Molera State Park should be on any Big Sur road trip itinerary

Stop #9: Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

Driving time from Andrew Molera State Park to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park = 22 minutes

After paying the $10 fee at the entry booth, you’ll have access to the 1,006-acre Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, sometimes referred to as “mini Yosemite.”

There are about 8 miles of trails to explore, ranging from flat short paths to challenging treks with ocean vistas.

The moderate 2.6-mile Buzzard’s Roost Loop Trail — which I highly recommend — fits into the latter category, though the effort is worth it for the coastal and mountain views at the end.

When hiking this trail, Andy and I also saw a few California Condors roosting and then spreading their wings to glide over the valley. It was a spectacular sight that should definitely be on your list of Big Sur trip ideas !

Buzzard's Roost Loop Trail in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park should be on your Big Sur itinerary

Stop #10: Pfeiffer Beach

Driving time from Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to Pfeiffer Beach = 16 minutes

Right across from the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is Pfeiffer Beach, a secluded beach that requires descending down a skinny 2-mile road with many twists and turns toward the shore. It’s worth it though, as the beach features soft sand, a secluded cove, and a very interesting rock arch in the water near the shore.

Oh, and the sand sometimes turns purple, particularly right after it has rained!

Admission to this Big Sur beach is $12.

Pfeiffer Beach is a must-add to your Big Sur road trip itinerary

Stop #11: Nepenthe Restaurant

Driving time from Pfeiffer Beach to Nepenthe Restaurant = 13 minutes

This should absolutely be one of your Big Sur stops , particularly if you love a scenic meal. Not only is the food at Nepenthe super tasty and the service superb, but you’ll have stunning panoramic views to pair.

When visiting, Andy and I started off with some spritzes on the outdoor viewing platform before being seated on their outdoor deck.

Because the view is something to savor, we started with a large cheese platter featuring three huge portions of cheese, dried apricots, grapes, and two chutneys.

From there, I had a house-made veggie burger with green salad while Andy ordered a beef burger with slaw. Both of us loved our meals — and again, the amazing view!

Pro tip: They serve lunch and dinner, though it’s recommended to visit while it’s still light out so you can really see the vista over the Pacific.

Even if you only have room to create a Big Sur one day itinerary , you won’t want to miss this eatery!

Stop #12: Grimes Point Scenic Overlook

Driving time from Nepenthe Restaurant to Grimes Point Scenic Overlook = 5 minutes

Here you can relax and take in one of the best coastal views in Big Sur.

Stop #13: Seal Beach Scenic Overlook

Driving time from Grimes Point Scenic Overlook to Seal Beach Scenic Overlook = 1 minute

Sometimes called Seal Vista Point, this popular Big Sur road trip stop is where you can look down over the bluffs of Highway 1 to see elephant seals on the beach below.

Note that if the visibility isn’t great when you visit you may not be able to clearly see them; however, you’ll still likely hear them barking!

Stop #14: Julia Pfeiffer State Park – McWay Falls

Driving time from Seal Beach Scenic Overlook to Julia Pfeiffer State Park = 5 minutes

Named after a Big Sur pioneer woman named Julia Pfeiffer Burns, this state park features 5.9 square miles that extend from the Pacific coastline up toward the majestic ridgeline for 3,000 feet.

While there are a number of hikes you can do here, there is one that should absolutely be on your Big Sur road trip itinerary:

McWay Falls .

The hike along the McWay Falls Overlook Trail is more like an easy walk at just 0.5 miles; however, you’ll be rewarded with a front-row view of an 80-foot waterfall pouring down toward the Pacific below.

On a clear day, the colors are extra vibrant as turquoise waters meet green, yellow, and red vegetation. In spring, there are also wildflowers that add to the scene.

Other highlights of the trail include McWay Canyon and McWay Creek .

The entry fee is $10 per card.

McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer State Park should be on every Big Sur road trip itinerary

Stop #15: Big Creek Cove Vista Point

Driving time from Julia Pfeiffer State Park to Big Creek Cove Vista Point = 12 minutes

This is another epic photo stop that will add to the beauty of your Big Sur scenic drive . Pull over for amazing views of beaches, rugged coastline, and jagged cliffs blending together as the winding Highway 1 appears to slice through the landscape.

Stop #16: Limekiln State Park

Driving time from Big Creek Cove Vista Point to Limekiln State Park = 12 minutes

As you can see, when driving Big Sur you’ll encounter many parks — all of which are worth a visit if you can fit them into your schedule.

There are a few main reasons to spend time at the 711-acre Limekiln State Park. For one, there is an array of experiences, from taking in the lovely views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the Big Sur coastline to hiking through redwood forests to learning the cultural history of limekilns.

There is also a small beach that sits under a Highway 1 bridge, making for a unique setting and interesting photos.

Then, of course, there are the hiking trails. Specifically, this park is home to three short and moderate hiking trails that are all connected by one longer trail, making it easy to do all of them.

During the hike, you’ll trek up Limekiln Canyon to see redwood groves, lovely creeks, the 100-foot Limekiln Falls , and the historic lime kilns that were used to extract lime to be used in concrete.

Note that there is a day-use fee of $10 to visit Limekiln State Park.

Limekiln State Park should be on your Big Sur road trip itinerary

Stop #17: Sand Dollar Beach

Driving time from Limekiln State Park to Sand Dollar Beach = 13 minutes

Known for being the largest unbroken stretch of sand in Big Sur, Sand Dollar Beach is a great spot to photograph the bluffs and interesting rock formations as well as swim, fish, and surf. In fact, it’s known as being one of the top surfing beaches in Big Sur.

Interestingly, Sand Dollar Beach is also a popular spot for beachcombing as it’s not uncommon to find sand dollars, serpentine, and jade.

If you’re in the mood to hike, a short trail takes you out over the bluffs to a lookout point where you can take in beautiful views and, if you’re lucky, migrating whales.

Sand Dollar Beach charges a day-use fee of $10 if you park in the official lot, though it’s free to park on the road and walk down the wooden stairs to the beach.

Stop #18: Ragged Point Scenic View

Driving time from Sand Dollar Beach to Ragged Point Scenic View = 26 minutes

Ragged Point is a rocky headland offering a beautiful view — though it’s important to note that the area of Ragged Point is a destination in itself.

First of all, the Ragged Point Inn is a popular place to stay, as each room offers a stunning view of the California coastline.

Their onsite restaurant also serves delicious seasonal dishes. After eating, you can stroll an onsite paved path down to the water for a beautiful vista.

Another highlight of Ragged Point is the hiking trails — including the short yet challenging Ragged Point Cliffside Trail, which heads downhill for 0.6 miles to a black sand beach. From here, admire the beauty of the 300-foot Black Swift Falls .

Ragged Point is one of the top Big Sur viewpoints

Stop #19: Elephant Seal Vista Point

Driving time from Ragged Point Scenic View to Elephant Seal Vista Point = 15 minutes

This stop takes you to the seaside village of San Simeon, specifically to my personal favorite viewpoint thanks to the wildlife.

In fact, during birthing and breeding seasons, you can see loads of elephant seals — which can weigh more than 8,000 pounds — laying on the beach and rolling around in the sand.

It’s easy to see them, too! Simply park your car and walk along a wooden platform to the beach. You’ll be at a safe distance but still very close to the action.

Elephant Seal Vista Point along Highway 1 should be on any Big Sur road trip itinerary

Stop #20: Hearst Castle

Driving time from Elephant Seal Vista Point to Hearst Castle = 8 minutes

Formerly known as La Cuesta Encantada, Hearst Castle is the former over-the-top residence of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.

Built in 1919, the 90,000-square-foot estate features 165 rooms and 127 acres of extravagant art, gardens, and amenities — not to mention a gorgeous view from its hilltop location.

Soon after Mr. Hearst passed away in 1951, the castle was donated to the state of California and opened to the public for touring.

My personal favorite feature of the tour is seeing the grand onsite pools, particularly the Roman Pool , which is inspired by ancient Roman bathhouses and features statues of Roman gods and goddesses as well as glass tiles fused with gold.

Adult tickets for Heart Castle are $25.

Hearst Castle should be on any Big Sur road trip itinerary!

Stop #21: Continue Your Big Sur Road Trip To Paso Robles

Driving time from Hearst Castle to Paso Robles = 47 minutes

As you leave the Big Sur area and its famous Highway 1 stops, it’s time to decide where to go next.

There are many options; however, I highly recommend making your way to Paso Robles, particularly if you want to relax in a beautiful wine country. Along with being home to over 200 wineries, you’ll find hot springs, a hip downtown with a great food scene, and opportunities to meet local makers.

It’s a highly recommended California road trip stop!

Other Stops To Add To Your Big Sur Road Trip Itinerary

While the above itinerary for driving Big Sur mentions the most popular stops, a few lesser-known but still worthwhile places to pull over include:

Big Sur Taphouse . If you like trying local beer and wine when you travel, the Big Sur Taphouse is the perfect spot. You’ll also find the Big Sur Deli next door, which is owned by the same people.

Henry Miller Memorial Library . Henry Miller actually lived in Big Sur from 1944 and 1962, and this library was created in honor of the famed author. Honestly, it’s more of a quirky bookstore than a library, with a broken piano and offbeat sculptures in the yard, strings of foreign currency dangling from the ceiling, and interesting novels, many of which you won’t see in mainstream bookstores.

Rocky Point Restaurant . If you like fine dining with a vista, this upscale cliffside eatery offers panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean through its floor-to-ceiling windows and from its outdoor patio. Keep an eye out for dolphins, deals, whales, and sea otters!

Big Sur Bakery . This adorable bakery resides in a 1930s ranch-style house covered in plants. Along with delicious homemade pastries and baked goods, you can sit for a delicious meal, from woodfire oven-baked pizzas to salads and soups made with local vegetables.

Mother Botanical & Shop . Next door to the Big Sur Bakery is this apothecary shop that also sells local art, interesting books, handmade ceramics, and more. They showcase really beautiful products, like bath time meditation bundles, aromatherapy sprays to support anxiety relief, all-natural beauty products, and more.

Point Sur State Historic Park. This park is rich in history! First of all, it was the site of many shipwrecks — which led to the creation of the 1889 Point Sur Lighthouse, which today is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Interestingly, the Big Sur attraction is California’s only complete turn-of-the-20th-century lighthouse open to the public.

The lighthouse can be visited with a tour — as can the historic Point Sur Naval Facility, a Cold War relic so secret that even its logo was fake.

The facility is the only remaining complete, standalone Naval Facility from the Cold War on the west coast.

On the tour, you’ll learn about the top secret mission carried out while hearing stories of spies, weapons, and clandestine operations.

You can book tours for both experiences here .

Best Places To Stay In Big Sur

The truth is, when doing the above Carmel to Big Sur road trip, it’s possible to stay in one hotel the entire time or switch each night.

Personally, Andy and I stayed at the Carmel River Inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea both nights and absolutely loved it. Rooms feature giant Jacuzzi-style tubs for two (certain rooms), private patios, and super comfortable bedding. They’re set up like a little village with walking paths and gardens as well as a nightly bonfire bringing the “community” together. It felt like staying in a cute apartment.

If you want to stay right in Big Sur, the Big Sur Lodge is a great option — especially as it’s located right in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and guests get free admission to this fun nature attraction.

For something more budget-friendly, Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn has a variety of accommodations — including some with shared bathrooms which can help save on costs.

Tips For Driving Big Sur

Here are some additional tips to help your Big Sur road trip run smoothly:

-You don’t need to stay directly in Big Sur to enjoy it. When planning my Big Sur trip, I nearly lost my mind trying to find budget-friendly accommodation right in Big Sur. What I didn’t realize was that Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey are both great destinations that are right off Highway 1.

In fact, both can be memorable parts of your Big Sur road trip! Bonus: Hotels in these places are usually cheaper than in the heart of Big Sur.

-There is no cell service while driving Big Sur Highway 1. For this reason, it’s smart to have your route pre-plotted in Google Maps for offline use.

-A convertible can make the drive more fun. Typically, I rent the cheapest car available — but not for Big Sur! Andy and I rented a Ford Mustang Convertible for our trip, which made driving Big Sur a lot more exciting.

-When driving between Big Sur and Carmel-by-the-Sea make sure to leave padding for stopping at the many viewpoints along Highway 1 — like Bixby Bridge and Seal Point Lookout; check out the trails attached, too, which take you along the coast and down to secret beaches.

-Check park websites for any trail closures. Things like landslides are relatively common in Big Sur, so certain trails or even entire parks may be closed sometimes. Additionally, trails may close to protect or heal local landscapes and habitats.

-Do not drive fast. While Highway 1 is well-maintained, there are many sharp curves and you do not want to end up driving into the Pacific Ocean.

-Check your fuel indicator. While you can get gas in Monterey and Carmel, the next gas station when heading south isn’t until you’re near Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, which is at least a 30-minute drive away.

Driving Big Sur in a Ford Mustang Convertible made the road trip a lot more fun!

What To Pack For A Big Sur Road Trip

Now let’s chat about what you’ll want to have with you while driving around Big Sur.

– Clothes to wear on a hike . As you can see above, there are many amazing hiking trails along Highway 1 Big Sur. Make sure you’re prepared with the proper clothing, gear, and hiking shoes.

– Bathing suit. Along with hiking trails, there are numerous Big Sur beaches worth visiting, so make sure to pack a swimsuit.

-Camera. Whether you use a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or your phone, have some type of photo-taking device charged and ready as this is one of the most scenic destinations in California.

-Offline maps. There isn’t cell service along Highway 1 Big Sur, so have your route plotted on a Google Map before you leave your hotel. Again, you can grab a pre-plotted Google Map for Big Sur by grabbing my free Ultimate Travel Planning Kit .

-Snacks and water. While there are places to stop off for food and drink along Highway 1, there are stretches filled with attractions but no deli or eatery in sight. Moreover, you might find yourself loving a particular park or beach and not wanting to leave to grab food. For this reason, it’s smart to pack a cooler so you’re always prepared.

– Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Protect yourself from the sun with proper gear. Even when it’s cloudy, the sun can shine through, making sunscreen extra important.

-Layers. The weather can change quickly in Big Sur, so be sure to pack layers. Moisture-wicking garments ( like these ) are the best as they keep you cool and temperate while wicking away moisture. They also help ward off hypothermia, which can happen in any season.

– Rain jacket. Big Sur can get very windy! Having a rain jacket ( like these ) is great for both unexpected rain and for when it’s gusty out.

-Scarf shawl. I love having a scarf shawl with me at all times. Not only does it work as a scarf, but you can use it as a makeshift picnic blanket if you find a nice spot to sit outside.

It can get very windy during a Big Sur road trip along Highway 1 in California

Frequently Asked Questions About Driving Big Sur

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about driving through Big Sur :

Q: What is the Big Sur drive time?

Without stopping, it takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to drive through Big Sur from Carmel-by-the-Sea to San Simeon along Highway 1.

Q: Where should I stop when driving to Big Sur from San Francisco?

The drive from to Big Sur from San Francisco is about 2.5 hours, making it a great day trip option.

That being said, if planning a San Francisco to Big Sur road trip itinerary , a few great places to stop along the way include Daly City, Half Moon Bay, Gilroy, and Santa Cruz.

Q: Is it possible to do a day trip to Big Sur from Los Angeles?

It takes at least 5.5 hours to drive from LA to Big Sur, meaning it wouldn’t be a reasonable day trip. That being said, you can absolutely fly into Los Angeles and use it as the starting point for a larger road trip that includes Big Sur.

Q: Where should I stop when driving to Big Sur from Los Angeles?

If planning an LA to Big Sur road trip itinerary , I recommend:

  • Visiting Joshua Tree National Park to hike the Lost Horse Mine Trail , Hidden Valley Nature Trail , and Ryan Mountain
  • Spending at least one day in Sequoia National Park to see its famous giant trees and hike the Lakes Trail
  • Climbing Mount Whitney , the highest mountain in the contiguous United States and the Sierra Nevada
  • Creating an itinerary for Yosemite National Park that includes hiking Columbia Rock , hiking Vernal Falls to Nevada Falls via the Mist Trail , and trekking from Sentinel Dome to Glacier Point
  • Looping back around to visit Carmel-by-the-Sea and Big Sur

From there, you can continue the loop back to Los Angeles stopping in places like Paso Robles (there are so many things to do in Paso Robles !), Pismo Beach for hiking , or enjoy a weekend in Solvang along the way. There are also many great LA hikes with waterfalls near the city.

By the way, this is a great itinerary whether you’re in a group or on your own. A solo trip to LA has a lot to offer, as do the national parks and wine country.

Q: What should I include in a Big Sur itinerary for one day?

If you only have one day in Big Sur, I recommend choosing 1-2 state parks, a beach, Nepenthe Restaurant, and all of the quick vista points like Bixby Bridge and Kasler Point.

Q: Is driving Big Sur in an RV allowed?

Yes! Just make sure to do the speed limit and be courteous of other cars around you, especially at viewpoint pullouts.

A view from Park Güell

Barcelona bus route removed from map apps to tackle tourist overcrowding

Residents welcome removal of number 116 route, often used to get to Park Güell

While some places will go to any lengths to attract visitors, residents of La Salut neighbourhood in Barcelona are celebrating a move to wipe themselves off the map.

For years, residents had complained that they could not get home because the number 116 bus was always crammed with tourists visiting Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell. The park is the city’s second most popular attraction after the Sagrada Familia basilica.

Now they have the bus to themselves after the city council arranged to have the route removed from Google and Apple maps.

“We laughed at the idea at first,” said César Sánchez, a local activist. “But we’re amazed that the measure has been so effective.”

Luz López, 75, told elDiario.es: “Before, the bus was so full even people with walking sticks couldn’t get on.”

Albert Batlle, the deputy mayor of security and coexistence on the city council, said that as well as improving mobility around Park Güell, “we needed to eliminate references to the 116 on the internet”.

Batlle declined to admit or deny that the council had asked for the route to be removed, while a Google spokesperson would only say they would not delete a bus route unless requested to do so by the council.

Sánchez, who has been campaigning for eight years for the council to address the problem, joked: “The next thing we need to do is to get the whole of Park Güell removed from Google Maps.”
