Tom Cruise reprised his hilarious Tropic Thunder alter ego, Les Grossman, at the MTV Movie Awards last night, for a scene-stealing performance with Jennifer Lopez.

Mr Cruise launched himself into the high-energy choreographed routine alongside Jen , who was performing her single, Get Right.

Dressed in a barely-there sparkly mini dress and silver thigh-high boots, Jen wowed the crowds , while Tom, as Les Grossman opted for less than flattering high waisted tuxedo trousers and braces. Nice!

Katie Holmes was spotted laughing and cheering from the front row as the pair shook their booty and had the audience in stitches.

The dramatic routine ended when Tom gamely attempted (but didn't quite make) the splits.

Tom Cruise Revives Hilarious 'Tropic Thunder' Character, Reveals the Secret Behind Dance Moves

Over 10 years after playing the character on screen in  Tropic Thunder , Tom Cruise brought Les Grossman back to life

Tom Cruise may have surprised fans at Comic-Con with the first trailer to his upcoming Top Gun sequel , but it was another movie in his illustrious catalog that Conan O’Brien asked about when Cruise appeared on the comedian’s talk show Thursday night.

In the episode, which was broadcast from the annual entertainment convention, O’Brien, 56, asked Cruise to step back into the shoes of Les Grossman — the skeevy studio executive Cruise played over a decade ago in 2008’s Tropic Thunder.

The actor, 57, was happy to oblige, showing off some of Grossman’s infamous dance moves.

Turns out, Cruise himself had pushed director Ben Stiller to incorporate those dance moves, as well as Grossman’s fat-suit, when he was first approached to play the role.

“I take classes all the time to learn things or I want to improve a skill, whether it’s singing, music — whatever subject I’m studying. So I take dance classes and I took hip-hop classes. And then what I find is, I’ll find a character to put that with,” Cruise explained on Conan, recalling how he told Stiller, ” ‘I’d love to play this character but I want to have fat hands and I’m going to dance.’ ”

“Sometimes with a character you just get an instinct about what you’re going to do,” Cruise added.

Stiller, according to Cruise, wasn’t completely on board with Cruise’s vision.

“For a couple of months he kept saying, ‘Maybe we don’t do the makeup. Maybe you just look like yourself,’ ” Cruise remembered. “And I said, ‘No, I need fat hands and I’m going to dance.’ ”

After the makeup was created, Cruise said finding Grossman was easy. “As you’re working on a character, you start becoming that character, you start discovering that character. And I just, I just started moving,” Cruise said, adding that Stiller was still confused. “There was no music. He was just looking at me like, ‘What’s happening.’ I was crushing Pepsi cans and Coke cans.”

Once Stiller added music to the scene though (specifically, Ludacris’s “Get Back”), he understood what Cruise wanted.

“He calls me the next day and cut it to that piece of music you see in the movie. And he said, ‘I get it, I get it, I get it. This is hilarious,’ ” Cruise shared.

Tropic Thunder earned Cruise a Golden Globe action nomination. The film also starred Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson.

Later on Conan , Cruise recited Grossman’s more colorful lines. “Stand back and literally f— your own face,” Cruise said, to the cheers of the crowd. “I will f— you up! I will massacre you!”

And though the next few movies Cruise has on his slate are action-based (including the aforementioned Top Gun: Maverick ), Cruise said comedy — and Les Grossman — will always have a special place in his heart.

“I love comedy,” Cruise said. “I used to write sketches when I was a little kid and would do imitations to make my mother and sisters laugh.”

“Les Grossman was a funny character,” he added. “That was a wild character. That was wild.”

Top Gun: Maverick is set for a June 26, 2020 release.

Because Tom Cruise created one of Tropic Thunder 's best characters, he demanded that his input be put in to the finished product, and he was willing to learn whatever it took to get the job done. It was, and it was glorious. Les Grossman proved so popular and so in-demand that Cruise agreed to bring him to the MTV Movie Awards back in 2010. It's amazing what hilarious mid-credits dancing can do for your career.

After that earlier tidbit, Tom Cruise circled back to Les Grossman and said what everyone in the room (and probably on the planet) wanted to hear:

I said, ‘Look, I’d love to play this character, but I want to have fat hands and I’m gonna dance.'

Man, he's good. I mean, c'mon. Who doesn't love sausage fingers and a proclivity for outrageously bad dancing? The guy has a good eye for what the audience wants, and boy, does he deliver. I'd love to see more of him if the franchise is ever revisited. Here's to hoping it is!

In the last five or so years, Cruise has taken on more serious, more action-heavy roles, some of his more recent ones being Doug Liman 's American Made and the fourth, fifth, and sixth installments in the wildly popular Mission: Impossible franchise. He has always had remarkable range as an actor, a fact that his various film roles clearly reflect.

If you're itching for a new Tom Cruise performance, you can catch him in Top Gun: Maverick when it hits theaters in June 2020. Or, you know, you could just watch him in Tropic Thunder or any of the Mission: Impossible movies for the millionth time. It really doesn't ever get old and it satisfies two very different moods.

Happy 10-year anniversary to Tom Cruise’s greatest role ever: Les Grossman

Tom Cruise’s long acting career boasts many celebrated roles: “Maverick” in  Top Gun , Jerry Maguire in  Jerry Maguire , Ethan Hunt in the  Mission: Impossible  series. Together, they tell the story of an artist extraordinarily committed to his craft, one who knows only one gear and that’s the highest. Tom Cruise is perhaps the last bona fide American movie star left.

And none of his roles exemplify his career in totality more than Les Grossman in  Tropic Thunder , a film that turns 10 this month.

Grossman, for the uninitiated, is merely a supporting character in the 2008 comedy starring Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. as actors in a Vietnam War film who get lost in the jungle, and are pursued by a real and very dangerous drug gang that controls the area. Grossman is the blustery, foul-mouthed, reprehensible studio executive in charge of the ill-fated action movie. Donning fake hair and gobs of prosthetics, Cruise’s famously handsome features are nearly unrecognizable.

Les Grossman is not one of Cruise’s biggest roles, nor surely his most impressive performance. (Cruise fans don’t agree on what is, though Frank Mackey in  Magnolia  and Vincent in  Collateral  are often cited among his best work.) Rather, Grossman offers audiences a microcosm of Cruise’s process, his intensity, his signature chutzpah. It’s all of Cruise’s most admirable traits as an actor, distilled into one fat suit.

The story of how Grossman came about is almost as Tom Cruise-y as the role itself. As Grantland’s 2015 oral history of Grossman pointed out, Grossman materialized during a low point both personally and professionally for Cruise. It was three years after the infamous Oprah couch debacle , and two years after his studio, Paramount, dropped him following some controversial comments the outspoken Scientologist had made about psychiatry. Cruise needed a role that would endear him to audiences—and the industry—once again.

Cruise came up with the idea for Grossman (who was not in the original script) himself. Besides the violent drug gang, Cruise thought, the film needed a second antagonist, but one back in Hollywood who’d exert pressure on the fictional movie with unhinged rants, rather than with guns. Etan Cohen, one of the film’s writers, remarked that Cruise was all systems go from the jump. “A lot of actors hold back at table readings. Tom was the opposite,” he told Grantland. “He worked insanely hard at making that character unique. You could tell that he’d never done anything like it before and was embracing it.”

Unlike some of his more energetic characters, Grossman did not require that Cruise climb the Burj Khalifa or do barrel rolls piloting a helicopter , but he did need to dance in a fat suit. Cruise was so committed to the character that he was at an actual risk for dehydration, Aida Caefer, who fashioned the suit for the movie, told Grantland. He choreographed his own dance moves, often practicing them out in the open on set. It took a 12-person team of makeup experts to design the silicone prosthetics that transformed the movie-star proportion of Cruise into the unkempt husk of the debased Hollywood mogul Grossman.

Viewers have long wondered if Grossman was meant as a caricature of anyone in particular—Harvey Weinstein comes to mind. The disgraced executive, who bears something of a physical resemblance to Grossman, was also notorious for his extreme outbursts as the head of Miramax, among the other, more criminal predilections that 87 women have now accused him of.

The character was so successful that Cruise appeared in costume at the MTV Movie Awards two years later, dancing in a skit that made fun of Cruise’s famous routine from  Risky Business ,  and again live on stage with Jennifer Lopez . Rumors were floated of a Les Grossman spinoff movie in the works in 2010, but it never materialized.

Tom Cruise is an inscrutable figure off the screen, one who’s closely associated in Scientology, with its dubious philosophies , and some of its even more dubious leaders . That has made it tough for some moviegoers to separate his on-screen persona from the man.

Les Grossman was an opportunity for Cruise, for the first and perhaps only time in his career, to poke fun at himself and his compulsion to do everything as big and as bold as it can possibly be done. As silly and grotesque as the character may be, Cruise’s performance gave us a glimpse of the man beneath the tabloid headlines. And he’s a man who likes to dance.

Tom Cruise makes all the right moves in MTV Movie Awards dance number

Heading into last night's MTV Movie Awards broadcast, it was a pretty good bet that The Twilight Saga: New Moon would take home many awards, and that Sandra Bullock's first big public appearance since her troubles with Jesse James would generate some kind of show-stopping moment.

But a more unlikely celebrity emerged as a real scene-stealer during last night's awards show: Tom Cruise . Reprising his popular Tropic Thunder role as profane Hollywood producer Les Grossman, Cruise donned a paunch and bald spot once more for several skits in which he acted as the abrasive producer of the glitzy MTV awards broadcast.

After squaring off against Karate Kid star Jaden Smith in the show's opener, Cruise later took to the stage for an elaborate dance number , which saw the actor grinding to Ludacris' Get Back with a team of back-up dancers, then working his way through some pretty complicated hip-hop moves (and high kicks!) alongside former Fly Girl Jennifer Lopez.

It was a high point in the two-hour broadcast, and one that's generating some great review s for Cruise. Certainly, the controversial actor could use the good P.R. in advance of his upcoming movie Knight and Day , which will be released later this month.

Les Grossman and the Particulars of Dancing in Black-Tie

The good: His hairline, as it were, has held up pretty well, and the man can definitely still move. Also, he didn't skimp on the details of his tux. Gut-tightening cummberbund? Check. Don't-fk-with-me suspenders? Check. Pleated shirt? Check. We also don't mind that he let that bow tie hang loose — at least he's not messing around with some rinky-dinky, pre-tied number. Follow his example, gentlemen, the next time your tux is called into active duty. Details matter.

The bad: The chest hair remains as regrettably aggressive as ever, and we would recommend that he leave the wearing of oversize medallions to his good friend Luda. That he wore sneakers with his tux is a shame, but when you're bouncing around the stage and getting spanked by J. Lo, sturdy footwear is probably a must.

The final verdict: Not bad, LG. Not bad at all. A little manscaping, some patent leather tuxedo shoes, and you're one step closer to looking like a movie star. Hell, you could even look like the guy on our cover .

Released in 2008, "Tropic Thunder" is one of the more polarizing comedy flicks to come out of the era. Sure, it boasts a stacked cast, including Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Ben Stiller, and more, and the idea of a bunch of actors ending up stranded in a dangerous jungle while filming their latest movie certainly has comedy potential. Although, things like  RDJ's character, Kirk Lazarus, wearing blackface for most of the film , and the portrayal of Tugg Speedman's (Stiller) Simple Jack character , have led many to take a second, more critical look at the film.

Still, Tom Cruise 's Les Grossman is as funny as ever.

A gruff, money-hungry studio executive stationed in Los Angeles, California, Grossman spends much of the film overseeing Speedman, Lazarus, and the rest of the crew's progress — or lack thereof. All the while, he throws child-like temper tantrums and shows next to no respect for those beneath him. Nevertheless, he's among the most fondly remembered parts of "Tropic Thunder" thanks to Cruise's eccentric approach to the character coupled with the makeup and prosthetics that make it hard to tell it's the "Mission: Impossible" star in the first place.

While a "Tropic Thunder 2" hasn't materialized up to this point, as it turns out, Les Grossman is finally going to make a comeback in the near future. Here's what we know.

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are eager to bring Grossman back

As reported by Deadline on August 8, 2022, Tom Cruise and producer Christopher McQuarrie are putting together a handful of new projects. The first aligns more with Cruise's typical cinematic efforts since it's an action flick with the potential to become a franchise, and the second is an original song and dance-style musical that would give Cruise a nice break from his usual endeavors. As for the third, it will supposedly focus on Les Grossman in some form or fashion. Time will tell if this will put the character front-and-center in a production of his own or if he'll merely appear as a supporting player.

Talks of a Les Grossman spin-off date back to the early 2010s, with "Barry" star Bill Hader confirming in 2011 that it was even written (via MovieWeb ). However, as time went on, it never came to fruition, though Cruise has been vocal about wanting to return to the role in some form. "I don't know. I did Les Grossman for the MTV Awards...We'll have to see. That could be fun," he told ComicBook.com in May of 2022 of giving Grossman another shot, which, bearing in mind Deadline's report about Cruise and McQuarrie's next efforts, means we could be closer than ever to Grossman's triumphant return to the silver screen.

One can only hope that in the coming months, we hear more about all of Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie's upcoming collaborations — the Les Grossman title, especially.

Tom Cruise To Revisit Les Grossman Role In New Movie

If you thought Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Michael Cera, Will Smith and the rest of the Hollywood elite were safe from movie-studio exec Les Grossman's future fiery insults and cutthroat business ethics, think again.

In a press release issued Wednesday (June 9), Paramount Pictures and MTV Films announced the development of a comedy focused on Grossman, the foul-mouthed movie producer played by Tom Cruise in "Tropic Thunder" and at the [article id="1640895"]2010 MTV Movie Awards[/article]. Cruise, Ben Stiller and Stuart Comfeld of Red Hour Films are producing the project with "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" screenwriter Michael Bacall tackling the script.

Unsurprisingly, the press release phrases the movie's development as if Grossman were actually a real person -- which, of course, he is! Tom Cruise is said to be in talks to portray the media mogul in the film. As for the film's plot, "Grossman" himself explained: "To quote my great friend Kirk Lazarus, 'I don't read the script, the script reads me.' "

"Les Grossman's life story is an inspiring tale of the classic human struggle to achieve greatness against all odds," said Stiller, Grossman's "Tropic Thunder" co-star. "He has assured me he plans to, quote, 'F---ing kill the sh-- out of this movie and make "Citizen f---ing Kane" look like a piece-of-crap home movie by the time we are done.' I am honored to be working with him."

Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman added: "Everything I learned in this business, I've learned from Les. I started out as his assistant, and from the first day he threw his desk at me when I got his lunch order wrong, I have loved him like a father. I am forever grateful to Ben and Stuart Comfeld and their ability to secure his highly coveted life rights."

Tom Cruise breakdancing, a Spice Girls reunion and tons of A-list celebrities gathering in one location have social media and the general public in awe over Victoria Beckham's 50th birthday party.

Beckham, who celebrated half a century over the weekend, posted about the luxurious soiree Sunday on Instagram.

But some of the most buzzworthy moments went intentionally unrecorded.

"I don’t think I’ve ever felt as loved as I did last night," Beckham's post said. "Thank you all for coming from near and so far!! X"

In the post, Beckham shared pictures of her with actor Eva Longoria, celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay, her husband, soccer star David Beckham and some of the couple's children.

In another Instagram post, Beckham shared a picture of her and the four other members of the English pop group, the Spice Girls.

"The best gift to be reunited!! Thank you to all my friends and family for celebrating with me. Kisses! xxx," Beckham's post about the Spice Girls said.

Guests 'absolutely dumbfounded' by Tom Cruise's dancing, reports say

Not included in either post were other famous attendees who came to celebrate with the Beckhams at Oswald’s, a private member’s club owned by Robin Birley in London's Mayfair district.

Oswald's is strict about taking photos and allowing social media within the venue , according to the club's member's privacy notice.

Actors Tom Cruise and Salma Hayek both made an appearance at Beckham's party and while one left an impression with their outfit, the other left it all on the dance floor, the Daily Mail reported.

Cruise, who turned 61 in July 2023, stunned guests when he began demonstrating "a series of breakdancing moves, culminating in splits," the outlet said.

"People were absolutely dumbfounded," one guest told the Daily Mail.

Social media reacts to Tom Cruise's 'split mania' and not receiving an invite to Victoria Beckham's party

While no photos or videos of Cruise dancing exist online, social media users continue to poke fun at the expense of the "Mission Impossible" movie star. An X user who goes by @Douggernaut_2 posted a clip of actor Mike Myers dancing in the film "Austin Powers" and said, "Tom Cruise arriving at Victoria Beckham's bday."

Several social media users hearkened back to when Cruise played the Les Grossman character in the 2008 comedy movie "Tropic Thunder." Cruise would hilariously reprise the character during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards and dance to rapper Ludacris' song "Get Back."

"Remember when Tom Cruise did this," X user @charletty_ said Monday in a post reacting to the video of Cruise's full dance routine at the awards show.

During the routine with singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, Cruise does a split on stage. X user @danilo_parks said Monday in a post, "It's real Tom Cruise does the splits mania out there today."

In addition to seeing Cruise do splits and the Spice Girls perform, guests also received goody bags full of Beckham's branded products, including a candle and a fragrance, the Telegraph reported.

All the fun has people wondering where their invite was to Beckham's birthday party, including X user @StaceyVaselaney who said, "I’m sitting here shaking my head wondering why wasn’t I invited to Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party."

La star réputée pour ses cascades a été filmée sur une moto non loin de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Tom Cruise est de retour dans la capitale. Sept ans après avoir passé plusieurs semaines à Paris pour le tournage de « Mission Impossible Fallout » , le sixième opus de la saga, l’acteur de 61 ans est de retour à Paris pour de nouvelles cascades, dans le cadre cette fois-ci du tournage de « Mission Impossible 8 ».

Plusieurs vidéos publiées sur le réseau social X montrent le comédien réputé pour ses cascades spectaculaires en train de rouler à moto, sans casque, sur l’avenue Carnot (XVIIe arrondissement), à deux pas de l’Arc de Triomphe. Une autre photo le montre également sur le pont de Bir-Hakeim (XV et XVIe arrondissement).

Suite du dernier « Mission Impossible : Dead Reckoning » sorti l’année dernière, le huitième épisode des aventures d’Ethan Hunt est prévu pour le mois de mai 2025. Prévue à l’origine en juin 2024, la sortie du film a été repoussée en raison de la grève des scénaristes et des acteurs à Hollywood. Au mois de mars dernier, la star hollywoodienne avait déjà été filmée en plein sprint dans les rues de Londres pour les besoins de ce film dont l’histoire n’est pas encore connue.

Au mois d’avril et mai 2017, l’acteur avait déjà été aperçu à Paris pour le tournage du sixième Mission impossible, qui était alors le plus gros tournage jamais réalisé à Paris . Durant celui-ci, l’acteur qui ne tarissait pas d’éloges sur Paris avait eu l’occasion de survoler la tour Eiffel en hélicoptère, d’atterrir en parachute sur le dôme du Grand Palais ou encore de réaliser une mémorable course-poursuite à moto dans les rues de la capitale.

Depuis quelques mois et ce jusqu’au mois de juin, les tournages se sont multipliés dans la capitale en raison de l’interdiction de tourner entre le mois de juin et le mois de septembre, à cause des Jeux olympiques .

L’acteur de 61 ans a été aperçu jeudi soir, dévalant une rue en moto à toute vitesse, sans casque et suivi par un camion de tournage, non loin de l'Arc de Triomphe et des Champs Élysées.

Tom Cruise a été aperçu, jeudi soir, en moto, à deux pas de l’Arc de Triomphe. L’acteur de 61 ans n’est venu à Paris pour une virée parisienne mais bien pour tourner quelques scènes extraites du prochain Mission Impossible , prévu pour mai 2025. Pour rappel, la présence des Jeux olympiques cet été a contraint la ville à limiter, voir suspendre, les tournages dans la capitale de mi-juin et à mi-septembre .

Sans surprise, la présence de Tom Cruise sur l’avenue Carnot, située dans le XVIII e arrondissement, a fait le tour des réseaux sociaux. Les images, relayées par un internaute puis par les médias, montrent l’acteur dévalant une rue à toute vitesse, sans casque et devancé par un camion de tournage, à deux pas de l’Arc de Triomphe et des Champs Élysées .

Le risque-tout d’Hollywood a aussi été aperçu sous le pont de Bir Hakeim, situé entre le XV e et le XVI e arrondissement. «Tom Cruise vient de tourner une scène sur la promenade Jean-Paul Belmondo , s’est exclamé le journaliste et écrivain Philippe Lombard sur les réseaux sociaux. Ça sent l'hommage à “Peur sur la ville” à plein nez.»

Ce n'est pas la première fois que la star hollywoodienne fait un crochet par Paris pour un tournage. En 2018, il est déjà venu accompagné de sa moto pour réaliser certaines scènes du sixième volet de la franchise, intitulé Fallout . Au total, le tournage dans la capitale avait duré 36 jours, devenant «le plus gros tournage jamais réalisé à Paris» , confiait au Parisien Michel Gomez, délégué de la mission Cinéma à la Ville de Paris. Les scènes de cascades avaient été réalisées aux quatre coins de la ville, du Grand Palais à la tour Eiffel en passant par l'esplanade du Trocadéro et l'Opéra Garnier.

En mai 2025, Tom Cruise sera de retour dans le rôle du célèbre Ethan Hunt pour une huitième mission d’espionnage. Ce prochain film, dont le titre n’est pas connu, devrait apporter des informations complémentaires sur le précédent épisode, intitulé Dead Reckoning , sorti en 2023. Parmi les acteurs déjà présents dans Mission Impossible 7 , on retrouvera : le Canadien Henry Czerny, Ving Rhames , Simon Pegg ou encore Hayley Atwell .
