Through hands-on problem solving and encounters with women role models in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), AAUW Tech Trek helps girls see their futures while having nonstop fun. This one-week summer camp is backed by AAUW’s  research and designed to make STEM fields exciting and accessible to girls in middle school — the age when girls’ participation in these fields statistically drops. For many girls, the week long camp sparks their curiosity and places them on a path toward success.

AAUW of California member Marie Wolbach founded Tech Trek in 1998 with the help of an  AAUW Community Action Grant . Today AAUW Tech Trek operates at 22 different sites around the nation. A 2013 survey of AAUW Tech Trek alumnae from California demonstrates the program’s lasting effects on many levels, including interest and confidence in STEM fields, decision to pursue those fields, and future career plans.

AAUW Tech Trek alumnae surpass the national average in most advanced math and science courses:

Star Trek: Infinite PC review — Boldly going where games have gone before

Teeming with potential and an extensive damage report..

Star Trek: Infinite key art

Windows Central Verdict

Star Trek: Infinite is a fun strategy game and a great entry point to the genre for newcomers that doesn't cost as much as many big games, but a plethora of bugs bog down the gameplay and mission design.

Fun management gameplay mechanics

Good grand strategy entry point

Large number of bugs

Obtuse mission design

  • Should you buy?

Have you ever watched situations unfold in Star Trek and thought "If only I had been in charge?" Star Trek: Infinite puts that idea to the test, allowing players to revisit a large chunk of Star Trek history in a grand strategy format by guiding different civilizations through force or peace. It has solid ideas and fun empire management mechanics, as well as a lower than usual price point.

Unfortunately, a large number of bugs bring down the overall experience, causing serious issues for when you try to complete missions or scale production lines across your controlled worlds. There's fun to be had, but Star Trek: Infinite needs a few big fixes before it could become a must-play. Disclaimer:  This review was made possible by a review code provided by Paradox Interactive. Star Trek: Infinite mission tree

Developer: Nimble Giant Entertainment Publisher: Paradox Interactive Genre: Grand strategy Playtime: 15+ hours Platforms: Windows PC Reviewed on: Windows PC Install size: 15.14GB Xbox Game Pass: No Price: $30 Release date: Oct. 12, 2023

Star Trek: Infinite is a grand strategy game developed by Nimble Giant Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive. Players assume control of one of four powerful factions in the Star Trek universe — the Federation, Klingon Empire, Romulan Star Empire, and Cardassian Union are all available — and guide their chosen faction through history.

You'll build fleets and starbases, colonize worlds, manage populations, and through force or diplomacy, eventually integrate weaker civilizations and smaller factions into your space-faring kingdom. Naturally, each faction has advantages and disadvantages, with the Federation encouraged to peacefully approach new cultures and act defensively. Meanwhile, the Cardassians may take a more unsubtle approach in acquiring new pre-populated worlds. All of this requires managing dozens of resources in a careful balancing act.

Star Trek: Infinite This is a solid entry-level strategy game that fulfills dreams of controlling the Federation or other Star Trek space empires. Just be mindful of some bugs right now at launch. Buy at: Humble Bundle | Steam

Star Trek: Infinite — Gameplay and customization

Star Trek: Infinite galaxy map

No matter who you're playing as, you must balance resource consumption with the growth of your empire, surveying solar systems and colonizing worlds to keep your population from getting too cramped.

I appreciate the game's structure here, as it simplifies a tremendous amount of information, offering multiple ways of automating your output. For example, you can designate a planet to be a Mining World and let the game AI choose the best ways to improve it over time. It's a good balance, providing minute details to tweak for veteran players like me without being too overwhelming for newcomers.

As mentioned above, each faction in Star Trek: Infinite has some unique qualities that allow you to play in different fashions, but you've still got options no matter who you've chosen. This ties in with the Mission Tree, which can allow you to take the Star Trek timeline down different avenues, exploring things that did happen or might've happened in other circumstances.

You could eventually build the Federation in such a way that it becomes a more militarized entity.

For example, you could eventually build the Federation in such a way that it becomes a more militarized entity, leading to offensive campaigns that bring peace to the galaxy... by force. It's a shame then that the Mission Tree is designed in an obtuse fashion. There's a large number of events that appear from time to time with absolutely no details on how you're actually supposed to proceed, leading to frustration as you have to hunt through the Mission Tree for any clue that something could be connected to a timed event that's popped up.

Unfortunately, there's also an absolutely massive amount of bugs right now. Some of these are fairly minor issues, such as needing to reselect a ship before it could be ordered to move. Others are far more massive, such as hearing the AI advisor say one of your characters has died without telling you who it is, suddenly losing the ability to move a fleet that's somehow become stuck in a system, or even (perhaps most egregiously) being unable to finish a mission despite filling every requirement.

Star Trek: Infinite — Visuals and audio

Star Trek: Infinite space battle

Star Trek: Infinite doesn't feature cutting-edge visuals, but given the zoomed-out approach, it really doesn't need to. The visuals are mostly fine, with decent-looking ships, star systems, and nebulae across the vastness of space that you'll explore. Static images are used for most species and worlds, and while there's definitely a bit more repetition here than I'd like, it's never so egregious as to be immersion breaking.

The soundtrack is a bit understated but still extensive, with a large number of tracks that fit the quiet mood you'll usually be in as you manage your empire. You can also directly select which tracks you'd like to hear on repeat, which is a nice touch.

It's also worth mentioning that the game has a very lengthy load time when you first boot it up, averaging around 50 seconds on a Samsung 850 SSD. After that loading however, subsequent loads to different save files only took a couple of seconds, so it's not an issue outside of when you first sit down to play.

Star Trek: Infinite — Accessibility and approachability

Star Trek: Infinite ship designer

Star Trek: Infinite doesn't have a large number of accessibility options, but players can tweak their playthrough to make things easier, adjusting the difficulty, AI advisor, and game speed to make things more hectic or relaxing.

All of this combined with a simplified structure mean that it's fairly easy to learn and understand compared to something like Stellaris. This does come at the cost of not having as many gameplay options or mechanics to play around with, but DLC support could change that over time. Similarities to Paradox's sister title Stellaris will abound, and rightfully so. The Star Trek IP isn't just used for set dressing here, though, and instead feels real and well-utilized. Ethical dilemmas and mysterious problems crop up from time to time and they feel like situations that would've appeared across the shows, especially The Next Generation.

Star Trek: Infinite — Should you buy?

Star Trek: Infinite planet customization

Overall, I do like playing Star Trek: Infinite, but that comes with a healthy number of asterisk marks. There's a lot that isn't explained to the point that it's hard to tell if an issue is actually a bug or not, while a large number of unambiguous issues weaken what is otherwise a decent strategy title.

Steadfast Trekkies will have fun, as will anyone looking for a watered-down, less-punishing entry point into grand strategy games. It's also aided by the low cost of entry, at less than half the price of most big games. Is it one of the best PC games for strategy fans? Perhaps not now, but I'm looking forward to seeing how Star Trek: Infinite evolves through future updates and mod support in the months ahead.

Star Trek: Infinite key art cropped to square

Star Trek: Infinite is an unfortunately buggy experience right now, but there's still fun to be had managing an empire as you acquire new worlds through combat or subterfuge.

Star Trek: Infinite review - make it so-so

This mind-meld creates something that feels a bit like walking into the middle of someone else’s stellaris game.

Star Trek Infinite

TechRadar Verdict

A deep and interesting Star Trek game that doesn’t quite scratch the strategy itch, but Trekkies will appreciate the chance to explore a new twist on a familiar universe. Still, I found myself itching for the depth of the very similar strategy powerhouse Stellaris.

Deep Star Trek lore

A focus on boldly going just about everywhere

Builds on familiar Stellaris mechanics

Feels very limited for a grand strategy title

Only four playable races

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

Platform reviewed: PC Available on: PC, MacOS Release date: October 12

Star Trek : Infinite sure is boldly going, but where it’s going to is a place I'm familiar with. It feels lazy to point at the empire-building 4X strategy (the 4 X’s stand for explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate) Infinite and mention that it’s just a reskinned version of Paradox’s own space-based Stellaris but after 25 hours with the game, I’m fairly convinced this is little more than a $30 licensed mod for that game.

The thing is, if you’re okay with the deep sci-fi and you don’t need a lot of people prancing around in red leotards to have a good time Stellaris is already a fantastic Star Trek game. You explore galaxies, make first contact with a host of different alien races, and ally up in big federations to bend the galaxy to your will before inevitably teaming up to contend with one of several end game crises, the sentient species desperately banding together to try and survive.

Want to be the bad guys? Since Stellaris was released back in 2016 several official expansions have fleshed out every part of the game so the only real caveat is… how bad do you want to be? Want to be a people-eating machine horde? A shadowy megacorporation? A warlike race of mushrooms that are trapping any worlds in impenetrable bubbles that doom them to life on a single planet? You can do all of those.

For Star Trek fans, the universe often remixes itself with the only true thread being a love of big philosophical questions and space lasers. Stellaris has all of that, so a cut-back version that has a license and a slightly off-brand Picard in the keyart feels somewhat superfluous.

But that’s what we’ve got. The key art Picard looks a bit uncanny valley, and Star Trek: Infinite has just four playable races (evil Vulcan Romulans, the boring good guys the Federation, my eternal warbuds the Klingons, and the Cardassians) and it feels so limited compared to the two existing Star Trek total conversion mods that already exist for Stellaris I’m not really sure what the point is.

Set phasers to… eh

Star Trek Infinite

Unrelated, but did I mention that Star Trek: Infinite costs $30? While the total conversion mods for Stellaris are free and don’t make Paradox any extra money? I did, and that’s because it’s hard to think about anything else after a few hours of playing Infinite .

There are a couple of twists on the formula, but the biggest change is also the worst: play Stellaris and you’ll start on a single planet and slowly map the stars. Pick one of the four races in Infinite and you’ll drop into a universe that’s already carved up, and it feels like you’ve dropped into someone else’s run at a grand strategy game, robbing you of the early exploration and instead, the game asks you to immediately grapple with running a handful of planets straight off the bat. God, running the Federation just seems like a lot of work, and it’s stifling.

In Star Trek Infinite you juggle several different resources and take your empire to dominance in the universe, whatever dominance looks like for you. This might involve you wanting to be an economic powerhouse, militant warmongers, or stealthy diplomats. The beauty is that there are so many different ways to “win”, you can kind of pursue your own path.

Star Trek Infinite

Diving into each faction’s focus trees, it’s impressive to see the care lavished on the different races. Klingons will get specific skills to emphasis their… Klingonness, for example.

In a more granular sense, this involves building out a network of space stations to control your territory and then settling inhabitable planets and constructing a series of civic districts, erecting specialty buildings to enhance their strengths. One world might exist to generate energy credits for you, while another might exist to pull together metals and alloys to build out ships.

If you’re wondering how resource management is happening in a Star Trek game when, famously, Star Trek is set in a universe with no system of currency and the complete absence of scarcity, then I would suggest you just roll with it because it would be an incredibly boring strategy game otherwise. Optimizing these planets and creating a material lead to get you a key scientific breakthrough or a bigger fleet to beat your enemies with is the real meat of Star Trek: Infinite .

Story time

Star Trek Infinite

While this is happening, narrative events are popping off left and right. You start at a huge canon event in the Star Trek universe, the Khitomer Massacre, and you work through from that point with a series of different narrative beats. Get it right and, depending on who you’re playing as, you can follow the canon along and eventually get your hands on the USS Enterprise and several named characters to tool around the galaxy with. In my first game, where I played as the fighty Klingons, this event led to a jumping-off point for the the race and it was easy to say how the atrocity could cause the Klingon civilization to diverge.

These beats are handled fairly well. Playing as the Romulans will let you feel like a space meanie with the mechanics and narratives coming together to fulfill that fantasy. If you have no imagination you can play as the Federation and be nice to everyone before - presumably - daydreaming about Riker lunging his way around a spaceship bridge. It’s not 100 percent accurate to the events, but that’s often because the races themselves are all pursuing their own goals and things never play out the way they do in the series’ canon. This doesn’t grate too much, but it does mean certain moments like building the Enterprise don’t have the heft they should have.

However in just two games and 30 hours of playtime, I feel like I’ve got the bearing of two of Infinite ’s races, and there are currently just four. I’m worried there’s just not enough depth here, especially when - and I’m sorry to bring it up again - Stellaris has a stack of these races and you can even jump into a randomly-generated race and just see what that opens up for you.

I love Star Trek because of that thrill of exploration and the feeling of discovering brave new worlds. You can do that here, but it feels like those far-off stars are just a little too familiar. Paradox famously reinvent their games and work on them over a long time so if I were charitable I could say that this Trek- ’em-up will undoubtedly get a host of improvements. I don’t think they’d convince me to return though: the infinite expanse of space already feels very limited indeed.

Accessibility features

As a strategy game with variable time controls, you can pretty much play Star Trek: Infinite at your own pace. There are very few additional accessibility options on offer here though, largely comprised of some multiplayer text-to-speech options and the ability to rescale your UI and subtitles.

How we reviewed Star Trek: Infinite

I played 30 hours of Star Trek: Infinite on PC, spreading my time between a meaty 20-hour save playing as Klingons and a smaller game playing as The Federation. I also re-watched several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation , which isn’t strictly necessary, but felt like a good companion to several narrative chains in the game that referenced those events directly.

Our list of the best PC strategy games is bound to provide you with a new game to sink some hours into.

Trekking across tech: the best star trek video games.

tech trek game

With the release of Star Trek: Bridge Crew for Sony Playstation VR , HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift, Star Trek fans can add another game to the list of must-play Star Trek games. Critics have praised Bridge Crew’s use of virtual reality to transport players onto the bridge of a starship and assume various positions. This game joins the relatively brief list of great Star Trek games, and the surprisingly lengthy list of Star Trek games in general. Since 1971, more than 60 Star Trek titles have been released on basically every platform imaginable. Most of these games have faded into obscurity, but every so often, some titles rise above their checkered linage and into the hearts of gamers. To celebrate Bridge Crew’s success, as well as the video game industry in general considering the on-going E3 convention in L.A., TrekNews has complied the definitive list of Star Trek games every fan must play.

The Best Star Trek Video Games

Star trek: bridge crew.

Release date: May 30, 2017 Developer: Red Storm Entertainment

Star Trek Bridge Crew

Let’s get the newest one out of the way first. TrekNews.net recently had the opportunity to demo the high-end VR platform HTC Vive at E3 this week, and it’s clear that this technology lends itself perfectly to Star Trek experiences. Bridge Crew utilizes the power of the various VR platforms to link players together on the bridge of the U.S.S. Aegis, a Federation starship looking for a home for the displaced Vulcans following the events of 2009’s Star Trek. Childhood dreams of commanding a starship are realized in this game, and those who always wanted to divert power to engines, engage warp drive, or issue orders can do so with the press of a virtual button. Four roles are available on the Aegis: captain, tactical officer, engineer, and helm, and each play a crucial role in the success of the mission. It’s the captain’s job to issue orders to the crew in the face of various objectives, and those who communicate well are treated with satisfying (and oftentimes humorous) mission completions.

Considering the infancy of VR and the historical lack of quality Star Trek games, it’s great to see a Star Trek title lead the charge in terms of what VR is capable of. Since the premiere episode of The Next Generation , the idea of virtual reality for entertainment has held such promise for storytelling. With Bridge Crew , along with other notable VR experiments, that promise is coming to fruition. While VR technology still has a long way to go in terms of graphical fidelity and accessibility, Bridge Crew is one of the best utilizations of VR seen to date. If you have one of these VR devices, it’s worth checking out.

Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force

Release date: September 15, 2000 Developer: Raven Software

Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force

While fan reaction to Star Trek: Voyager is generally mixed, there’s no denying that this first-person shooter by Raven Software (now a support studio for Call of Duty titles) transported gamers into the Delta Quadrant in a fantastic way. Players step into the boots of Ensign Alex Munro, a male or female member of the elite security force Hazard Team, responsible for protecting Voyager from anything and everything as it travels home. In Elite Force, Voyager is trapped in a graveyard of alien vessels, and it’s up to Hazard Team to defend the ship.

Elite Force was praised as one of the first successful Star Trek games thanks to its engaging shooter mechanics, atmosphere, and level of detail. The real kicker was that Voyager’s entire main cast (sans Jeri Ryan initially) voiced their characters in the game, adding a further layer of immersion to the faithfully recreated decks of Voyager . The game holds an 86 percent rating on Metacritic, the highest of any Star Trek game, and on the heels of the PC game’s success, the game was ported to the PlayStation 2 (albeit to negative feedback). If you are itching for more Elite Force, its sequel was released in 2003, although to slightly less enthusiastic reviews.

Star Trek: Bridge Commander

Release date: February 27, 2002 Developer: Totally Games

Star Trek Bridge Commander

A predecessor of sorts to Bridge Crew , Bridge Commander places players in the captain’s chair, tasked with issuing orders to the crew while following mission objectives. While Bridge Crew might have fancy virtual reality tech driving its missions, Bridge Commander holds its own with impressive 3D models of classic Star Trek ships and props. Players assume the role of captain of the U.S.S. Dauntless, a Galaxy-class ship tasked with investigating the destruction of a star.

If you are looking for a faithful tactical simulation of your favorite Star Trek ships, and don’t have a VR device, Bridge Commander will most certainly scratch that itch, albeit with less elaborate visuals. Unfortunately, as with most older Star Trek games, Bridge Commander is elusive, and difficult to come by, and only available by third-party sellers. However, as this game holds a respected place in the pantheon of Star Trek interactive entertainment, it might be worth the price, especially if you’ve always wanted to sit the captain’s chair.

Star Trek Online

Release date: February 2, 2010 Developer: Cryptic Studios

Star Trek Online

Not everyone latches on the massive multiplayer online role-playing game trope of grinding levels for hours upon hours to get decent loot. There is a substantial time sink inherent in free-to-play MMORPGs that isn’t present in most other genres, so these sprawling games must offer something else to attract their fan base. In the case of Star Trek Online, developer Cryptic has one thing going for them that keeps Star Trek fans coming back: incredible use of the brand. Star Trek Online is perhaps the best representation of the Star Trek universe in any game. This is thanks to the game’s attention to detail, whether it is the aesthetics of both established and new planets or starships, or the various beloved character appearances from across the Star Trek timeline. The chance to command your own ship and confront various threats across the galaxy is too good for most Star Trek fans to pass up, and the freedom players have to characterize their own ship is impressive. A steady stream of new content also helps with the game’s longevity, and regular updates to the game’s various systems keep things fresh, even if this schedule means players must regularly sign in to keep from falling behind.

Cryptic also should be praised for not allowing those dreaded micro-transactions to take over their game. Yes, the best gear and ships are reserved for those who want to pay, but that doesn’t mean purely free-to-play gamers can’t enjoy the tons of content that is there. Considering the game is free to download, there’s no reason not to try it.

Star Trek: Armada

Release date: February 29, 2000 Developer: Activision

Star Trek Armada

A genre that this list has thus far lacked is one that naturally lends itself to Star Trek’s diverse fleet of ships. Strategy games rely on gamers’ intuition and problem-solving skills combined with tiers of units with varying abilities, and Star Trek: Armada fulfills this niche nicely. Focused on events after the devastating Dominion War, Armada allows players to control four factions: the Federation, Romulans, Klingons, and Borg. Every faction has an array of units pulled right from the Star Trek universe, faithfully recreated for combat on a near-planetary scale. Like previous Star Trek games on this list, several actors reprise their roles, including Patrick Stewart, Michael Dorn, Denise Crosby, and J.G. Hertzler. The game impressively weaves together these characters and factions across an intricate time-traveling storyline dealing with the discovery of an Omega Particle (of Voyager fame) and an impending Borg invasion. Armada ’s story will satisfy most Star Trek fans, and those more concerned about smart gameplay will be equally pleased.

With the developing virtual reality scene, Star Trek has the chance to be reborn with a creative vision not seen since the introduction of the holodeck in The Next Generatio n. While Bridge Crew may be the first in what is hopefully the reemergence of numerous quality Star Trek titles on the gaming scene, we can’t forget the games that came before. Unfortunately, due to licensing issues or production woes, many older Star Trek games are difficult to find, and your best bet would be third-party sellers on Amazon. If you find one of these classic Star Trek games, treasure it. It is a part of Star Trek history, worthy of note even as we speed into the franchise’s gaming future.

Dramatic Labs’ new Star Trek game leaves spacedock on May 23

Key art for Star Trek: Resurgence featuring the game’s logo.

There was a time when you couldn’t turn around without tripping over a game set in the Star Trek universe, but those games slowly fell out of style in the wake of the Enterprise TV series. Games like Star Trek : Timelines and Star Trek Online have been filling that void somewhat, but Star Trek: Resurgence aims to provide a more substantial, narrative-driven entry than what’s offered by current Trek titles. Resurgence releases on May 23 for PlayStation 5 , Windows , and Xbox Series X .

Star Trek: Resurgence is being developed by Dramatic Labs, a studio formed by several Telltale Games veterans, and it clearly draws from their experience crafting dramatic stories shaped by player choice. Resurgence takes place after Star Trek: The Next Generation , but additional details regarding the story have been sparse.

A gameplay screenshot of Star Trek: Resurgence featuring Jara Rydek.

We do know that the story follows two characters stationed on the U.S.S. Resolute. First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineer Carter Diaz provide contrasting viewpoints of life on board a Starfleet vessel.

A screenshot of gameplay from Star Trek: Resurgence featuring Carter Diaz

While Resurgence is sure to feature its fair share of phasers and photon torpedoes, it appears to be revisiting a grand tradition of narrative-driven adventure games set in the Star Trek franchise. Past Star Trek games like Judgment Rites , Hidden Evil , and Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Final Unity did a great job of capturing the essence of Star Trek without needing to lean on non-stop action to keep players invested.

Given the variety of takes we’ve seen with new Star Trek media in recent years, I’m excited to see where Dramatic Labs takes the franchise when Star Trek: Resurgence launches next month.

I don't understand the correlation between the tech type and the researcher specialization in getting that type of tech. Is there a modifier someplace that says there is increased chances? I know if you have the same type you get a research bonus while researching it but how do you know there is a better chance of getting same type techs?

Shadowrun: Hong Kong

If this actually works it represents yet another important gameplay mechanic that isn't explained anywhere. But regardless of that, I don't think it should work like this, because it makes the acquisition of critically important early technologies reliant on two RNGs -- getting a researcher with the right bonus, then getting the right tech roll soon enough to matter.

Fulgrymm

This mechanic is straight from Stellaris, and it isn't explained in-game there either. Assuming they changed nothing about it, there is a 25% higher chance of techs matching your scientist's expertise showing up every draw.

Tech Trek Announces New Logo!

November 18, 2022

Tech Trek has a new look and feel for the 2023 camp season that speaks to the STEMpowerment everyone who participates feels as a result of the experience.  As we get ready to enter Tech Trek’s 25th year, we recognize that what has sustained the program for this long is the commitment of its members and alumnae because it made or makes such a difference to them.

The original logo concept was submitted by McKenna Rose, a 2022 camper selected by the Five Cities-Pismo Beach branch. Her teacher noted that “McKenna Rose is a courageous Next Generation Scientist…. McKenna’s communication skills are advanced along with her passion for hands-on discovery.”

We thank McKenna for her brilliant design and passion.
