The show was great, Sigur Rós is a super band. The only problem was the venue (Tempodrom) and organisers, they just don't care about people. First of all, they haven't informed beforehand the fact that it won't be possible to enter the venue with a backpack. Something like storage point was organized in front of the Tempodrome and the queue to it was long. So, in the end, you need to stay in three queues - to leave your backpack, then to enter the Tempodrom and the to leave your coat. But the biggest bummer was that the organizers oversold seat tickets and 10-15% of seat places was actually behind the scene, which is stupid and pissed off quite a lot of people.

Having never heard Sigur Rós before, I went into this show a complete virgin to them. I was actually taking my mother to see them, as she's a big fan, and as I'm predominantly a hard rock/metal head, I was hoping for the best that I wouldn't be bored to tears. It began rather slowly and I thought I might be in for a long night, but by the end of the first half I was "getting it". The second half after the interval just exploded - utterly amazing. Judging by the applause as various songs started, I presume they were playing their more well known songs, but the light and graphics show that went along with the following hour or so was just stunning. What was really good about it was even though I'd never heard them before, and they are rather abstract and unconventional, they were also easy to follow and understand the music being played. Quality wise, they were outstanding - it sounded great, looked great, and the whole production was completely on point. Turned out to be a very enjoyable evening, well worth going.

What should have been a pleasurable evening with friends was spoiled by earth-shattering amplification and mixing that mashed all sounds together into an ear-defeating cacophony.

The vocals were generally screeched out in falsetto with Birgisson's voice developing an unmistakable crackle late in the first half. His attempt to hold a high note in the second half was a study in hubris as he wavered increasingly off-note while the crowd - clearly never having witnessed your average classical vocal performance - went into enraptured hysteria.

The musical disappointment was somewhat offset by the interesting, though by no means groundbreaking, visuals and we couldn't help wondering whether the crowd were applauding that rather than the noise. Or perhaps they were sufficiently tanked up with opioids to deaden their senses.

What a shame and embarrassment when introducing some friends to this band. I kept having to assure them that I wasn't crazy and that Sigur Ros do normally have a really interesting sound.

The constant stream of people escaping the auditorium confirms we weren't alone in our assessment.

Sigur Rós to islandzki zespół muzyczny, który istnieje już od 1994 roku. Gra szeroko pojętą muzykę rockową i robi to w wyróżniający się sposób: wokalista śpiewa falsetem, a gitarzysta elektryczny gra na swoim instrumencie smyczkiem (był to totalny przypadek, ponieważ basista pożyczył smyczek od innego członka zespołu i dosłownie torturował nim swój instrument. Wtedy też gitarzysta elektryczny spróbował swoich sił i okazało się, że całkiem nieźle mu to wychodzi, więc smyczek stał się stałym elementem koncertów). Biorąc pod uwagę te ciekawostki oraz ewenement, jakim jest język islandzki, możemy spodziewać się dziwnej dla nas wymowy nazwy Sigur Rós.

Pochodzenie i znaczenie nazwy Sigur Rós

Nazwa Sigur Rós oznacza dosłownie “różę zwycięstwa”. Nie jest to poprawna forma gramatyczna w języku islandzkim. Członkowie zespołu wykorzystali tutaj grę słów:

• Sigur Rós od Sigurrós, czyli imienia siostry jednego z członków kapeli, która obchodzi urodziny tego samego dnia, w którym powstał zespół.

Na miejscu siostry czulibyśmy się wyróżnieni.

Sigur Rós – kim jest?

Sigur Rós to islandzki zespół muzyczny o dość długich korzeniach. Sięgają one 1994 roku, kiedy to Jón Þór Birgisson (gitarzysta i wokalista, który został nim tylko dlatego, że nikt inny z zespołu nie potrafił śpiewać), Georg Hólm (gitarzysta basowy) i Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (perkusista) spotkali się i założyli razem kapelę. Od tamtej pory grają szeroko pojętą muzykę rockową i wyróżniają się własnym stylem. 

Już na początku swojej kariery zespół podpisał kontrakt z wytwórnią Smekkleysa, w której wydał swoją pierwszą płytę “Von” (z islandzkiego “nadzieja”), a rok później kolekcję remiksów pt. “Von brigði”, co znów jest grą słów (“vonbrigði” oznacza “rozczarowanie”, ale “von brigði” możemy tłumaczyć już jako “zmianę nadziei” lub “wariacje na temat nadziei”). 

W 1999 roku grupa wydała kolejną płytę pt. “Ágætis byrjun” (“dobry początek”). To właśnie ona dała zespołowi międzynarodową sławę. Dzięki temu Sigur Rós zagrał chociażby z Radiohead.

Kolejna płyta ukazała się w 2002 i nosiła tytuł “( )”, a piosenki tytułów nie posiadały (później zespół jednak zmienił zdanie i opublikował na swojej stronie internetowej tytuły tych utworów). Wszystkie te piosenki są śpiewane w sztucznie stworzonym języku Volenska (“język nadziei”). Od tamtego czasu regularnie pojawiają się kolejne ich płyty, takie jak:

• “Takk…” (2005 rok),
• “Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust” (2008 rok),
• “Valtari” (2012 rok),
• “Kveikur” (2013 rok),
• “Átta” (2023 rok)

W skład zespołu wchodzą dziś:

• Jón Þór Birgisson (wokalista, gitarzysta elektryczny, klawiszowiec, gitarzysta basowy, który gra także na harmonijce ustnej i banjo),
• Georg Hólm (gitarzysta basowy przecinak wokalista, który gra także na dzwonkach),
• Kjartan Sveinsson (klawiszowiec, perkusista, gitarzysta elektryczny, wokalista, który gra także na instrumentach dętych i syntezatorze. Od 2013 do 2022 roku nie grał w zespole).

• tytuł “Viðrar vel til loftárása” oznacza “dobrą pogodę na nalot powietrzny”, co z kolei zostało zaczerpnięte z prezentowanej w telewizji prognozy pogody podczas wojny w Kosowie (prowadzący powiedział ironicznie że jest dobra pogoda na nalot powietrzny),

The music scene in Iceland is very "small-d" democratic. Musicians might rehearse with a symphony during the day and play in a metal band at night. It's therefore not surprising that Iceland's beloved experimental rock band Sigur Rós is kicking off its summer tour Friday with a 41-piece orchestra. The concerts are in support of ÁTTA , the band's first album in 10 years.

Sigur Rós' music, with its lush layers of slow-churning grandeur, has often commanded a symphonic feel. ÁTTA , the band's eighth album, manages to be its most majestic and intimate at the same time. Strings, keyboards and vocals swell to dramatic heights, while bittersweet melodies look inward for release.

ÁTTA came about by chance. Even before the release of the previous Sigur Rós album in 2013, band members more or less went their separate ways. Kjartan Sveinsson, the keyboard player, began writing film scores and classical pieces, while singer-guitarist Jón Ϸór Birgisson, who goes by Jónsi, continued his solo career.

"It was kind of like an accident," Jónsi told NPR about the reunion. "Kjartan hadn't been in the band for 10 years and he came to visit me in LA and we did a recording jam session in my basement." The two friends, who had been making music together for over two decades, started noodling around and creative sparks ignited.

Then the pandemic hit and the project stalled. But later, after another basement session, and the input of original bass player Georg Hólm, a new album, in all its dark beauty, began to crystalize.

ÁTTA unspools like a symphonic song cycle, with frontman Jónsi's high-flying falsetto often reaching for operatic ecstasy in songs like "Skel" (Shell), which he calls "the emo song," and "Ylur" (Warmth) where the singer stays aloft, riding the spiraling thermals of strings and electronics. Perfumed in luxurious reverb, ÁTTA 's dense atmosphere of sound makes it difficult to tell the difference between acoustic instruments and the electronic ones, especially when Jónsi picks up a cello bow to play his electric guitar.

It's also hard to decipher the words — whether they are in Icelandic, or what the group has sometimes called Hopelandic, a series of made-up nonsense syllables. But like opera, where you might not understand the native tongue, it's the music — the band's unerring way of writing melodies that tug at the heart — and Jónsi's expressive performance that conveys all that's needed. Another song in Hopelandic is "Klettur" (Cliff), which sports a lumbering, concussive beat that suddenly halts to allow the heavens to open in celestial light via huge keyboard pedal points and soaring strings.

The music of ÁTTA might, depending on your mood, come off as either gloomy or glorious. Jonsi calls the album "heavy but hopeful" and admits it was written in the shadow of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Yet there are rays of pure golden light in the darkness.

2024 Orchestral Shows

We are very pleased to announce Nordic and US tour dates with a full orchestra.

This will be the first time we have played with an orchestra in these particular cities and for these new dates. Robert Ames will be conducting all shows.

As with last year’s very limited run of orchestral shows, we will be performing songs from our latest album ÁTTA along with many more from our catalogue covering the full expanse of our history.
