Tickets for San Diego Zoo Safari Park are available online or at the attraction box office.

Online ticket prices tend to be cheaper than tickets at the venue.

When you buy online, you can avoid the long queues at the attraction’s ticket counters.

Because the attraction sells a limited number of tickets, they may sell out during peak days. Booking early helps avoid last-minute disappointments.

Once you purchase San Diego Zoo Safari Park tickets , they get delivered to your email address.

There is no need to get printouts of the ticket.

On the day of your visit, proceed directly to the turnstiles; you do not have to stand in line at the ticket booth. Show the e-ticket on your smartphone and enter the park.

The African Tram Safari is free with the regular San Diego Safari Park ticket .

The 30-minute guided tour happens in an open-air tram so that the visitors can connect with the San Diego Safari Park’s animals on a closer level. 

The tram takes a 4 km (2.5 miles) long route through San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s field habitats, and you get to see herds of giraffes, flocks of exotic birds, crashes of rhinos, etc. 

African Tram Safaris start from the African Outpost at 10 am and continue 45 minutes before the park closes. 

The best time to line up for the African Tram Safaris is before 11 am or after 3 pm because there is no crowd. 

If you reach the African Outpost between 11 am and 3 pm, you may have to wait a while to board the tram.

Besides the Africa Tram, the San Diego Safari Park admission tickets include Cheetah Run, tours and attractions, shows, animal encounters & kids playgrounds.

The only experiences NOT included in the regular ticket are the paid safaris .

A visit to San Diego Safari Park is a costly undertaking. 

The Safari Park admission costs US$69 for all visitors 12 years and above and $59 for three to 11-year-old visitors. 

This is why many visitors wonder if the free Africa Tram Safari included in the ticket is enough. 

They also want to know if it makes sense to book one of the paid safaris.

We think the paid safari tours are nice to have. 

If money isn’t an issue, and you have time, go for them. 

Else, you won’t miss much by just purchasing the regular San Diego Safari ticket and going on the free safari.

Wildlife lovers opt for the 2-day San Diego Zoo + San Diego Safari Park combo , which allows them to visit both wildlife attractions one after the other. Or if they prefer, they can visit one attraction twice. 

Paid Safaris at San Diego Safari Park 

San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers 11 safaris, for which visitors must pay extra. 

These are over and above the numerous wildlife experiences that come with the regular Safari Park ticket . 

You can book these safaris once you reach the Safari Park or call 619-718-3000 in advance.

Even if you book an extra safari, you must purchase a regular entry ticket to the park.

During the Wildlife Safari, your group of up to six will board an open-air safari truck with an expert guide and explore the expansive savanna habitats.

This is a private tour, and you see many birds and mammals, including some babies.

During the Night Vision Safari, you spot rhinos, flamingos, giraffes, and more in the dark.

The Wildlife Safari at twilight is a great way to get a complete wildlife experience. 

Led by an expert guide, your private group will board a safari truck and roll into the African savanna habitats to get closer to African animals.

You finish the safari by stopping at one of Safari Park’s breathtaking viewpoints. 

You enjoy a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage and a curated snack box even as you take in the sounds, smells, and views.

Has anyone payed the extra hundred bucks per person to do one of the safari tours in the back of a truck? I’ve never visited the park before and also plan to go to the zoo. Is it worth the added expense to do one of the safari tours?

It's worth it if you want to get right next to the rhinos and giraffes rather than seeing them from farther away. You can definitely enjoy the park and see the animals without paying extra, so it really comes down to whether it's something you really want to do or not. We have done several of the extra safaris over the years, including the truck tour, and they've all been fun and worth it to us; but the majority of our visits have just been walking around and taking the tram tour that's included in the admission ticket.

Yes, the tour is worth it! I did it in 2010 and had so much fun seeing the animals up close that I went on real safaris in South Africa, in 2011 and 2013.

The Safari Park at 1800 acres is 18 times larger than the Zoo. It's only free ride is the Africa Plains and Hills tram in contrast to a far more extensive array of free internal transportation in a much smaller Zoo. It can be tiring to move around the Safari park completely on foot, especially with the elephant viewing area relocated temporarily while a major improvement project is going on.

Save up your money for a real safari where you can get up close and personal with large carnivores too! :-)

Worth it? It depends on your family.

Do you love animals? Do you want to be up close and personal with some? Then yes, it's worth it. Look into all the options and pick an animal type that you all will enjoy. We did the Saving Giants Behind the Scenes and got to see rhinos close and elephants, as well as meet some ambassador animals and even touch them.

If your family likes animals, but just want to see a lot of animals, then it's maybe worth it. A cart safari might be something to look at or the Wildlife trek. Both of these have tour guides and are smaller than the regular tram safaris.

Multigenerational Fun on a San Diego Safari Park Tour

I last visited the San Diego Safari Park in the early 1980s when the concept of a zoo where animals lived in large, more natural habitats was still relatively new. I remember being thrilled to ride the park’s now-defunct monorail (it’s been replaced with a more nimble and easy to repair tram) and watch African animals I’d only ever before seen in books.

The park is still unique in its size and scope – situated on 1,800 acres it is home to over 2,600 animals and 3,500 species of plants. It’s a beautiful and fun place to learn about diversity and interdependence.

The Safari Park is also pretty much the perfect attraction for a multigenerational family vacation – I visited with my husband, in-laws, and 10- and 12-year-old sons and there was something for everyone from Robert the “talking zebra” to a bald ibis out for a stroll.

The San Diego Safari Park: A Different Kind of Zoo

Guests of the San Diego Safari Park pay an admission fee that covers all of the foot-accessible exhibits as well as rides on the Africa Tram, which circumnavigates the African Outpost and skirts the edge of the African Plains exhibit. Then there are a number of additional safari experiences that can be purchased for an extra fee.

It would be easy to forgo any of the extras and just spend the entire day just wandering through the park (my family explored for almost four hours with some time for lunch and didn’t see everything). Among the many animals we saw were gorillas, tigers, lorikeets, meerkats, condors, and a very smelly pelican.

Throughout the park you’ll also encounter animals out and about with the humans who care for them; these experiences offer a chance to see how the animals are fed and trained.

There are playgrounds, a petting zoo, and numerous places to have lunch or a snack throughout the park as well.

Up Close and Personal With the Animals on a Caravan Safari Tour

In addition to all the walking, we decided it would be nice to give everyone’s legs a rest – and give the kids and grandparents a chance to do some intensive animal viewing together – by taking a Caravan Safari Tour. This tour visits areas of the park that are not accessible in any other way and also offers a chance to learn and ask questions of a knowledgeable naturalist.

When you purchase your tour, you are given an assigned time and are asked to meet at the Safari Base Camp fifteen minutes in advance (word to the wise – take advantage of the nearby bathrooms, since you won’t have a chance to go once you are out on the ride).

The ride takes place in a very comfortable covered cart that’s pulled by a truck. Our friendly driver was careful to stop whenever our guide Jeanne asked him to. She was full of stories and information about the animals, pointing out animals tucked behind rocks and trees, explaining what their behaviors meant, and making offering funny similes (dried palm fronds are apparently “like jerky for giraffes”).

The first and biggest photo op of the safari tour is the opportunity to feed a giraffe. The animals are very used to it and one of them will amble over as soon as the truck stops.

Everyone loved this of course, but perhaps even more special was the chance to see and learn so much about animals I’d never before encountered from wapiti, or an Asian elk to gorals, which are kind of like a cross between goats and antelopes.

What was meaningful was that Jeanne conveyed the significance of the park’s work throughout the tour. Gesturing around her at the unfamiliar animals, she pointed out numerous endangered species.

“What does endangered mean?” She asked us rhetorically before answering her own question. “It means that if we don’t do anything they’ll all be gone between five and seven years.”

Among the facts we learned:

• Rhinoceroses don’t make any noise when they run because the bottoms of their feet are padded and have no hooves.
• Wild cattle have horns that turn inward – that’s because they are social animals. Inward-facing horns allow them to be close to each other without poking.
• The most endangered animal in the Asian exhibit is a gaur or an Indian bison – this despite the fact that the majority of the population in India doesn’t eat cows. They are endangered because of loss of habitat and disease.
• Different species interact with each other in unexpected ways. Some of the wild cows actually lick their sheep neighbors, which feels like a massage or combing.
• When camels have enough to eat, their humps are droopy.
• Some species of wild deer will actually drink mud – Jeanne called it a “mud smoothie”.

It was genuinely thrilling to be out among the animals, especially because it offered a full sensory experience. We touched the giraffe’s thick, rough tongue; heard and felt the pounding of a herd of wild horses as they galloped across their territory; watched up close as a male blackbuck antelope tried to impress the females who had strolled into his territory to graze.

The Caravan Safari last about two to three hours and is not a budget experience – at over $100 per person it’s one of the more expensive options on the park menu, which also includes a Behind-the-Scenes Safari and a ropes course. But as a completely unique zoo experience, it is worth the money. For one thing, it offers the only way to see the Asian Savanna portion of the zoo – and the animals there were among the more unusual and interesting.

But it also was a really special and memorable way for kids, parents and grandparents to enjoy and learn together. And of course, none of us will ever forget looking right into the smiling face of a giraffe.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is located in Escondido, which is north and east of San Diego. We waited until after rush hour on a weekday and drove there from Coronado, just outside downtown San Diego, in 45 minutes. There’s a fee for parking.

The Inside Look tour is an entertaining and educational adventure—perfect for a family outing—offering guided views and interesting information about how we take care of our wildlife. It is filled with experiences and stories you can’t get anywhere else.  You’ll meet your guide, and then enjoy being escorted around the Zoo in a tour cart. 

All tour participants require a tour ticket, regardless of age. Admission is separate and required.

Change/Cancellation: Reservations may be changed up to 5 days before the program and will be subject to a $15 Administrative Change Fee. Less than 5 days, changes not permitted. Get an inside look at iconic and fascinating cat species during this two-hour experience—which starts before the Zoo opens for the day. You’ll travel by cart and on foot to discover cats of all sizes—and meet one cat up close! Learn how wildlife care specialists care for cats at the Zoo, what we’re doing to support their survival in native habitats, and how you can help. We cannot guarantee which cats you will see on any particular morning, but depending on the day of your visit, you might see a jaguar, lion, tiger, mountain lion, fishing cat, leopard, ocelot, or serval.

Paws & Claws

Oh, my! Get ready for an inside look at wildlife that are famous for their massive paws and powerful claws—lions, tigers, and bears. In this two-hour adventure, your guide will escort you around the Zoo in a deluxe cart to provide an insider’s view of majestic big cats and charismatic bears. Discover fascinating facts about lions, tigers, and diverse species of bears, how we’re working with partners in their native habitats to protect them, and how you can help secure a future for their species. We cannot guarantee which species you will see, but depending on the day of your tour, you may see Malayan tigers, African lions, sun bears, sloth bears, Andean bears, or grizzlies.

World Famous Wildlife

This special tour is guaranteed to thrill and amaze! During your tour, a Zoo expert will escort your group to a variety of locations to see wildlife up close and share stories of wildlife care and conservation. This tour includes special experiences at two different habitats that showcase the Zoo’s World Famous Wildlife and can include areas not accessible to the public. No two tours are ever the same!

Wild Africa

Embark on a wild adventure highlighting the Zoo’s amazing African wildlife. Visit two wildlife habitats up close and learn about our collaborative efforts in Africa and how we strive to help these incredible species thrive. San Diego Zoo Guided Bus Tour: See What Others Miss

The San Diego Zoo Guided Bus Tour is free with admission.

In this 30-minute tour, you’ll see about 70% of the park. The tour bus guides love to talk about recent zoo baby births and additions to the collection. Taking this tour helps you plan which exhibits you may want to return to later. 

• How Long? 30 minutes
• Price: FREE. No extra fee in addition to your paid zoo admission.
• Age restrictions: All ages are welcome. But toddlers must be held in a responsible adult’s lap. Baby strollers are not allowed on the bus. Park them in the pram lot at the bus tour entrance. 

Tour Highlights: We’ve been on this tour many times. That’s because there’s always something new to see. And the drivers will let you in on the latest animal gossip like who’s new to the zoo, and who’s pregnant. It also has the best views of the tigers and hippos.

There are two main types of Inside Look Tours. There are 4 different types of standard Inside Look Special Experiences at the San Diego Zoo focusing on different habitats or animal characteristics. And 3 are Deluxe tours that are longer in duration and offer some customization.

In each, you’ll ride in a motorized open cart for a behind-the-scenes peek at the zoo. There is usually some walking involved, so wear comfortable footwear.

Each Inside Look tour is entertaining, but also an educational experience. You’ll learn about how different species are cared for at the zoo. Your guide is full of stories about different species’ adaptations and the weird quirks of some of the zoo’s residents. 

Underwater Wonders Tour Review – First In, Best Views

• How Long? 90 minutes. Morning.
• Price: $92 – 115 per person. Cost depends upon peak admission days. Admission is separate for each person and required.
• Age restrictions: For all ages. Maximum 2 children per paid adult.

Tour Schedule: This tour is usually given at 8:30 AM, that’s before the zoo’s usual opening time at 9:00 AM. It feels as if you’re the only people there.

Featured Wildlife : During this segment, you may encounter a variety of wildlife, potentially including polar bears, penguins, or hippos. Your exact itinerary depends on how the animals are feeling that day. Don’t expect to see polar bears chasing each other across the rocks in the September heat. They’re likely to be asleep. However, if you’re lucky they’ll be taking a cooling swim in the water.

You’ll also learn about the above-and-beyond care provided to these splashing species and the Zoo’s efforts in supporting their survival globally. Did you know that the African penguins prefer to be hand-fed their sardines? Yep. Talk about first-rate service!

Zoo-wide Exploration : The adventure continues with a comprehensive tour around the Zoo. This may include the following areas:

• Northern Frontier’s Polar Bear Plunge
• Africa Rocks penguins and underwater viewing area
• Lost Forest Hippo habitats – Huge river hippos and the dainty dwarf hippos

World Famous Wildlife Tour Review – Behind the Scenes at San Diego Zoo

Tour Schedule: The tour is typically conducted mid-morning or early afternoon.

Exclusive Access and Expert Guidance: The tour includes special experiences at two different habitats, highlighting the Zoo’s World Famous Wildlife. This includes special access to areas that are typically not open to the public, allowing for an intimate and up-close encounter with the wildlife.

One of these is often a behind-the-scenes look at the Hamadryas Baboons in the Africa Rocks section. If these animals are on your itinerary you’ll get access to a special viewing platform, which is normally reserved only for wildlife caretakers, offering a close-up look at these fascinating social animals.

Unique and Varied Experiences: Each tour is a one-of-a-kind experience, with no two tours being the same. This ensures a fresh and exciting adventure for repeat visitors.

The Scoop on Poop Tour Review – For the Kid in All of Us

Tour Schedule : The “Scoop on Poop” Tour typically runs once daily. They’re usually hosted in the early afternoons.

Why Choose the Poop Tour? Kids (of all ages) will love this tour because it allows them to say, “POOP!” often. And scatological jokes are almost a requirement. But you’ll enjoy this excursion even if you don’t have a slightly dirty sense of humor. Scat is a treasure trove of information for zookeepers and scientists.

Animal waste is like a daily health report for zookeepers. They can tell if the animals are eating right, digesting properly, and overall, how they’re doing health-wise. It’s a crucial part of ensuring these amazing creatures are healthy and thriving.

Don’t worry about getting your hands dirty ; this tour is completely hands-off. You’ll gain loads of knowledge without having to touch anything. It’s perfect for all ages and interests.

Which Animals Will You See : The habitats you will visit vary from tour to tour, depending upon animal activity and poop production. However, information from animal waste is particularly important in exhibits where breeding is being encouraged and also where several animals may occupy the same enclosures. Two of these are:

• Koalas in the Outback Habitat – Wildlife caretakers are working diligently to encourage koala babies in the largest koala colony outside of Australia.
• Lions in Elephant Odyssey – the zookeepers sometimes mix glitter into the lions’ food. This isn’t just for fun – it helps them monitor each lion’s health based on the glitter color in their poop. It’s a creative and effective way to keep track of their well-being.

Conservation Efforts : The zoo is using scat to study and protect wildlife globally. It’s incredible how something as simple as poop can play such a vital role in conservation efforts.

Paws & Claws Tour Review – Meet the Kings & Queens of the Jungle

• Price: $117 – 140 per person. Cost depends upon peak admission days. Admission is separate for each person and required.

Tour Schedule : The “Paws and Claws” Tour typically runs once daily in the late morning. They’re usually offered on weekends with Fridays added during peak days during the summer.

Why Choose the Paws & Claws Tour? In this 2-hour tour, you’ll get up close with the kings and queens of the animal kingdom — big cats and bears. Riding in the comfort of your deluxe cart will save your aching feet. You’ll be going up and down through some of the most hilly terrain in the zoo; Elephant Odyssey, upper Center Street (Bear Street), and on theTiger Trail.

The guides are very knowledgeable. I learned that the Sloth bears aren’t slow at all, but can run faster than humans. Your driver also knows stories about the individual animals. Ask them how Scout and Montana, the grizzly brothers, ended up living in San Diego.

Which Animals Will You See : The stars of this tour are the animals with the biggest claws and paws at the zoo; the top predators like lions, tigers. and bears. They can’t guarantee which animals you’ll see on any given day but the lineup is spectacular.

• Malayan Tigers – their Malayan nickname is “Pak Belang”, which means “Uncle Stripes”
• Sun Bears – smallest bear with an extra-big tongue
• Sloth Bears – have a V-shaped white patch on their chests
• Andean Bears – eat mostly plants
• Grizzlies – can eat up to 60,000 calories per day, that’s 88 Burger King Whoppers

San Diego Zoo Crazy About Cats Review – Feline Lovers No-Brainer

• How Long? 2 hours
• Age restrictions: Ages 5 and up. Maximum 2 children per paid adult.

Tour Schedule : The “Crazy About Cats” Tour runs once daily at 8:30 AM before the zoo opens.

Check-In Location: Meet at the HUGE lion statue (Rex’s Roar) in front of the main entrance to the zoo. Don’t worry. It’s easy to spot others who are taking the tour. That’s because they’re frantically looking around for their zoo guide, just like you are.

Why Choose the Crazy About Cats Tour? If you love cats pick this tour. This early morning excursion takes you by cart and feet to visit some of the San Diego Zoo’s finest felines. The early start time allows you to see the cats before they start their naps. You’ll also meet one special cat ambassador up close. 

You’ll be taken into areas not usually available to the public. There are no guarantees about which cats you’ll see. Hey, they’re cats, they do what they like. But jaguar, lion, tiger, mountain lion, fishing cat, leopard, ocelot, serval, or cheetah are all possibilities. 

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking a bit. And there are some stairs to navigate.

Crazy About Cats Tour Highlights: 

This experience includes one close-up encounter with a fantastic feline. You’re most likely to meet a serval, ocelot, clouded leopard, serval, or cheetah. You never want to stare nose-to-nose with a lion, tiger, mountain lion, jaguar, or Amur leopard. They’re too large and unpredictable to mingle with the public. Even their wildlife care specialists have to have a barrier between them.

We got lucky and they brought out a cheetah as the climax of our tour.

The spotted sprinter was brought to us in the Wedgeworth Bowl with her dog companion. We were sitting about 3 feet behind the fence in the photo above. So we were about 6 feet from the cheetah and got some great shots.

The long-legged feline beauty spent almost half an hour snacking, exploring the stage and water feature while purring constantly. It was gratifying to see that she was so happy.

Elite Adventure Tour Review – Unforgettably Exclusive Animal Adventure

Ok. There will be no lions on top of your cart during this tour. But you will enjoy exclusive up-close animal viewing opportunities while exploring the zoo in a premium cart. Let me walk you through why this tour is so popular despite its high price tag.

• How Long?  3.5 hours
• Price: $425 – 475 per person. Cost depends upon peak admission days. Admission is separate for each person and required.
• Age restrictions: For ages 5+. Maximum 2 children per paid adult.
• A tasty snack stop

Tour Schedule : The “Elite Adventure” Tour runs daily at 10:00 AM.

Because there are few premium carts, certain days can sell out months in advance. If you’re planning a spring or summer vacation, get these tickets as soon as you finalize your travel plans. The same applies if you want to visit within a week of US national holidays and 3-day weekends. 

Why Choose the Elite Adventure Tour?

The “Elite Adventures” tour isn’t just any zoo visit; it’s a 3.5-hour journey that immerses you in the world of the animals at this world-famous attraction. You’ll experience behind-the-scenes access and special wildlife encounters are reserved exclusively for Elite guests. What sets this tour apart is the unique blend of adventure and education. You’ll be guided by experts who are passionate about their work.

And let’s not forget the cherry on top: a stop with some delicious munchies to keep your energy up!

Price: Many people pick this tour because although it is expensive, it is cheap in comparison to the Exclusive VIP Experience. Also, it does not take up an entire day.

Which Animals Will You See?

Each tour varies, but you’ll see a wide variety of wildlife, from majestic big cats and playful primates to exotic birds and rare reptiles. Your behind-the-scenes access means you might get to see this zoo’s residents in a more intimate setting, learning about their care, behavior, and conservation status. Each tour is a unique experience, reflecting the dynamic nature of the zoo and its inhabitants.

Restrictions and Cancellations

Before you book, there are a few important details to keep in mind. The tour is designed for guests aged 5 and up, ensuring that everyone in your party can fully enjoy the experience. If anyone needs wheelchair assistance, just give the zoo a heads-up at 619-718-3000 after booking to ensure everything’s smooth on the day.

With a cap on the number of children per adult and all participants needing a ticket, it’s best to plan accordingly. Also, keep in mind that the tour runs only on select dates and starts at $425 per person, not including zoo admission.

Life happens and sometimes plans change. If you need to adjust your booking, you can do so up to 5 days before your tour with a $15 administrative fee. Cancellations are a bit stricter, with a $25 fee if done 5 days in advance. Unfortunately, less than 5 days out, changes and refunds aren’t an option.

Lastly, the Elite Adventure goes on rain or shine, but the zoo reserves the right to modify or cancel the tour for reasons like weather or animal welfare. If your tour is canceled, they’ll do their best to reschedule you.

Animals in Action Experience

• Duration: 1 hour
• Price: $89 – 105 per person. Admission is separate for each person and required.
• Age restrictions: Children ages 5 – 15. Maximum 2 children per paid adult.

The Animals in Action tour at the San Diego Zoo takes place in the Urban Jungle in the afternoons. You’ll get behind-the-scenes looks at some of the zoo’s animal ambassadors. You may also get a chance to feed or interact with them. There’s little or no walking on this tour. It takes place in a stage setting with audience seating.

Animals in Action Tour Highlights: People commenting on this tour talked to me about how close they got to the clouded leopard and the great photos they got. What you’ll see on this tour is dependent upon which animals are available. Guides tell me that sometimes you can feed rhinos here (when they’re in residence in the Urban Jungle. Click the following link for my article that has another rhino-snacking opportunity . But cheetahs and clouded leopards are frequent guests. And sloths have been known to put in a slow-motion appearance too.

Discovery Cart Tour

• How Long? 60 minutes
• Price: $60 – 80 per person. Admission is separate for each person and required.
• Age restrictions: All ages are welcome. A maximum of 2 children per paid adult. Children younger than age 15 must be accompanied by a paid adult. Ages 0-2 are free and do not require a ticket, but must sit on an adult’s lap. No more than 2 infants ages 0-2 are permitted per ticket, per cart
• Tickets: No discounts. Buy at the zoo’s website

The 60-minute Discovery Cart Tour is the least expensive guided cart experience at the San Diego Zoo. It covers not only the animals but also the park’s extensive plant collection. It’s the best option for families with younger, fidgety kids. That’s because it’s cheaper, and allows you to see much more of the zoo in a shorter period. 

Questions are encouraged. And if you see a favorite animal (or eye-catching plant), you can hop off to take photos. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees about which species you’ll be able to see. 

Discovery Cart Tour Highlights: These experiences vary depending on what animals are active and where you choose to stop and take photos. But people getting off this tour have shown me terrific photos of the jaguars and lions taken from the back of the exhibits where the general public is not allowed to go.

Early Morning Explorers

The Early Morning Explorers experience at the San Diego Zoo allows you and your kids to discover Wildlife Explorers Basecamp before the zoo opens. Enjoy family-friendly guided activities and have exclusive access to the new exhibits and playgrounds. This is a wonderful opportunity for special needs kids.

• Price: $39 – 49 per person. Admission is separate for each person and required. There is no charge for children less than 2 years old.
• Age restrictions: Recommended for children ages 3 – 12. Maximum of 2 children per adult;  kids under 15 must be accompanied by a paid adult
• Tickets: No discounts. Purchase at the zoo’s website

Schedule : The “Early Morning Explorers” experience takes place on 5 or 6 Saturdays spread throughout the year.

Tour Highlights: People liked that the entire Wildlife Explorers Basecamp was almost empty of people. They didn’t have to worry that some big kid was going to accidentally knock over their little toddler. One parent said that her little girl finally had the confidence to walk the rope bridge because she wasn’t scared by other kids swinging it. 

Exclusive VIP Experience

• Duration: 5 hours
• Age restrictions: All ages are welcome. Ages 15 and younger must be accompanied by a paid adult.

Tour Tip: Zoo tour guides have told me to ask if there are new zoo babies you can see when you book this experience. Often VIP Experience participants are permitted to see and sometimes interact with animals that are not on exhibit to the general public yet. For instance, when Xena the sloth gave birth in 2022, the only zoo visitors allowed to get close to mom and baby were VIP participants. 

Change and Cancellation Policies For San Diego Zoo Tours

If you need to make changes to any tour arrangements at the zoo, check the instructions on your email ticket confirmation. You can also look at the Special Experiences page on the zoo’s website for each tour. I’ve summarized the policies below:

Tour Changes

• 5 or more days before reservation – changes allowed but a $15 Administrative Change Fee will be charged.
• Less than 5 days before reservation – changes not permitted

Cancellations

• 5 or more days before reservation – changes allowed but a $25 Cancellation Fee will be charged.
• Less than 5 days before reservation – payment not refundable.
• The tours are outdoor events. The zoo reserves the right to cancel or change the program due to weather, animal welfare, and guest safety concerns. If any event is canceled, the zoo will try to reschedule you for a future time. 

Are San Diego Zoo Tours Worth It?

Heck yes! Bob and I have had a wonderful time on every tour. We love getting unique, close-up views and feeding the animals (not on every tour). Giraffe slobber is a gooey mess, but it is still fun.

In my conversations with 42 tour attendees, I didn’t run into anyone who felt disappointed with their excursion. I was not able to talk with anyone who took the Inside Look Elite Adventure or VIP Experience.

Eight people wanted their excursions to be longer, but those were spread out between the 90-minute and 2-hour tours. It seemed to me that they were having a good time and just didn’t want their tours to end. I and my husband would have stayed with our guides all day if given the chance.

The cart tours are usually not crowded. We’ve been going to the zoo for years and have observed hundreds of carts loading and unloading on Front Street. Most have 6 to 9 people in a vehicle that could hold 13. The larger vehicles have 4 rows of seats plus one next to the driver. Their padded benches easily seat two adults plus a child or an adult plus two kids.

USS Midway Museum

The USS Midway , commissioned in 1945, served as an aircraft carrier in the United States Navy for nearly 50 years. It was the longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century and was decommissioned in 1992. Today, the USS Midway is a museum showcasing the rich history of the ship and its role in American naval aviation. 

From the flight deck to the mess hall, this massive vessel has over 60 exhibits, including a collection of restored aircraft. You'll want to give yourself at least 3 to 4 hours to appreciate this museum fully. However, one-hour guided tours and self-guided audio tours are also available. 

Hotel del Coronado & Coronado Beach

Hotel del Coronado, a historic landmark in San Diego, has a rich and storied history dating back to its opening in 1888. It was one of the world’s largest resort hotels at that time and has hosted numerous notable guests, including presidents, royalty, and celebrities. The iconic hotel even served as the backdrop for the classic romantic comedy “Some Like It Hot” (1959), starring Marilyn Monroe. 

Today, Hotel del Coronado continues to host guests, but if you're only interested in visiting, historic, haunted, and self-guided audio tours are available. You can admire Victorian architecture, enjoy a meal, visit boutique shops, or enjoy Coronado Beach. Pro tip: skip the car and take the ferry to Coronado. It's only a few bucks each way!

Belmont Park & Mission Beach

Belmont Park , situated along San Diego's Mission Beach boardwalk, is a family-friendly amusement park with gorgeous ocean views. This historic park opened in 1925 and has a giant wooden roller coaster, bumper cars, laser tag, mini golf, a zipline, a rock wall, and many other rides and entertainment options. The park also hosts events, including live bands and weekend comedy nights, and has several beachfront restaurants. Fun fact: the Giant Dipper roller coaster is one of the oldest wooden roller coasters still in operation on the west coast.

Mission Beach itself is a great place to spend the day. You can enjoy the sun, sand, and surf, ride bikes or rollerblade down the boardwalk, play a game or two of beach volleyball, or grab a drink and a bite to eat while watching the sunset. 

Balboa Park

Balboa Park, known as the cultural heart of San Diego, is an urban oasis filled with gardens, walking trails, museums, and theaters. The park has sixteen gorgeous gardens, including the Japanese Friendship Garden, the Botanical Building, and the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden, which has over 2,400 rose bushes! There are also fifteen museums and theaters in Balboa Park , such as the Comic-Con Museum, San Diego Air & Space Museum, and The Old Globe Theatre. Balboa Park is also great for picnics, shopping, dining, and is one of the top things to do in San Diego.

San Diego Zoo & Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo , located in Balboa Park, is one of the largest zoos in the world, with over 3,000 animals. You and your family will thoroughly enjoy visiting the San Diego Zoo, from camels and cheetahs to elephants and grizzly bears. To help you get around, the zoo has private cart tours, double-decker bus tours, a hop on hop off bus, and even the Skyfari aerial tram. If you're interested in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, where you can enjoy a safari-like experience in the back of an open-air truck, you'll need to travel about 45 minutes to an hour to Escondido, CA. 

Historic Gaslamp Quarter (Downtown)

The historic Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego is a vibrant neighborhood with a lively mix of entertainment, dining, and nightlife . From trendy rooftop bars and upscale restaurants to beautiful Victorian architecture and art galleries, the Gaslamp Quarter offers cultural exploration by day and a fun night out come sunset. Liberty Station

Liberty Station has a rich history dating back to its origins as the Naval Training Center (NTC) from 1923 to 1997, where up to 50,000 Navy recruits were trained yearly for its 60 years of operation. After the base closed, the area was repurposed into a vibrant mixed-use development. Blending historical architecture with contemporary amenities, the all-in-one hub features five districts: Arts District, The Quarter, The Neighborhood, South Point, and NTC Park.

Amazon Fresh store in Poway remains shuttered as company works to ‘improve shopping experience’

The empty parking lot and locked front doors are a constant reminder that the Amazon Fresh store in Poway has yet to open after more than two years of anticipation.

The Amazon Fresh building in Twin Peaks Plaza near Target on Pomerado Road has been ready for occupancy since early 2022, according to a city of Poway Facebook post.

“Almost eight months ago we signed off on a certificate of occupancy for the much-anticipated ‘Just Walk Out’ grocery store, signaling the completion of any work that required involvement from the city of Poway,” states the Nov. 21, 2022 post.

Poway spokeswoman Rene Carmichael said last month that the post was in response to questions and social media discussions on why the store had not opened yet as of late 2022.

It was also to inform the public that the city had signed a certificate of occupancy and was no longer involved in the project, by a private business at a private shopping center, Carmichael said.

An Amazon spokesperson said last month that the company is not yet able to share details about specific store location openings.

Carmel Mountain Ranch resident Bernadine Splettstoeszer said Amazon should share what their plans are regarding the Poway Amazon Fresh.

“They should be transparent with the community,” Splettstoeszer said. “I’m sure the intention was not to be closed for several years while they regroup and figure out their best business plan.”

Amazon announced it was pausing new openings of Amazon Fresh stores in February 2023. Since then the company has been working to improve the shopping experience, said Amazon spokesman Griffin Buch.

In November, the company made upgrades to stores in the Chicago and Los Angeles areas, adding signs to make the stores easier to navigate, introducing national and private label products along with prepared sandwiches, salads and wraps, and transitioning to the Amazon Dash Cart, a smart shopping cart, Buch said.

Opening brick-and-mortar stores to augment the company’s online grocery business requires “significant innovation and persistence,” said Amazon spokesperson Molly McWhinnie in an email statement last month.

“We’ll continue to open new Whole Foods Market stores, and will do so selectively with Amazon Fresh as we see results we like,” McWhinnie wrote.

More than 130 locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada use the Just Walk Out technology, but the Chicago and Southern California stores are using the Amazon Dash Cart technology.

The change is in response to customer feedback that while they liked the benefit of skipping the checkout line with Just Walk Out, they also wanted the ability to easily find nearby products and deals, view their receipt as they shop, and know how much money they saved while shopping throughout the store, Buch said.

The Dash Cart uses a combination of computer vision and sensor fusion to help identify items placed in the cart, according to Amazon officials. Shoppers select an item, scan it on one of the Dash Cart cameras and place it in the cart. Customers can see how much they are spending in real time, officials said, and when they are done shopping they can skip the checkout line by going through the Dash Cart lane.

San Diego resident Darin Triplett, said he’s mystified by the delayed opening of the Poway store.

“I went over there and walked around to go to Amazon Fresh but I found it was closed and never opened so I just went to Target,” Triplett said while dining out in the area. “I used to live next to a Whole Foods and I love Whole Foods. Amazon is taking over the world.”

Splettstoeszer said that Amazon is such an efficiently run company that she suspects the business operators have a plan, and are keeping their options open.

“They’re not waiting on a remodeling, they’re planning something else,” she said. “They have so much money, the lease is nothing — it’s chump change. It’s not good for the community to have it just sit there. It’s prime retail space.”

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy was quoted in a fourth-quarter earnings call on Feb. 1 as saying a “mass physical presence” is needed to serve as many grocery needs as Amazon does.

“And that’s what we’ve been trying to do with Fresh over several years,” Jassy said on the call. “We’ve been testing v2 (version 2) of our Fresh format in a few locations near Chicago, in a few locations in Southern California. It’s very early, it’s just a few months in, but the results thus far are very promising and on almost every dimension.

“And so we need to see it for a little bit longer time, but the results appear like we have something that’s resonating,” he said. “And if we continue to see that then the issue becomes how fast and what’s the best way to expand.”
