Dethklok and Mastodon Team Up for North American Tour

mastodon dethklok tour

This fall, two of the most popular bands in metal will co-headline a 34-city North American tour as the Grammy Award-winning Mastodon hits the road with Dethklok, the world’s most brutal animated death metal band from Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse . In one of the most highly anticipated tours of the year, the Adult Swim Presents Dethklok and Mastodon tour will kick off on October 2 in Portland, OR, and bring mayhem and destruction to local venues throughout the nation. Adding even more layers to this fall’s top metal tour, Oakland’s High On Fire and Converge will open each show. There will be a ticket pre-sale that begins on Tuesday, August 4 at 10:00 AM EST, while the full allotment of tickets will go on sale to the general public starting Friday, August 7. For more information about the tour including the pre-sale ticket password, price ranges and how to order, please visit adultswimpresents.com .

As sponsor for the entire tour, Adult Swim will feature Brütal Legend gaming stations for fans to experience the videogame first-hand, while a two-minute animated content piece, created by Titmouse, will air during each show. Print ads, adultswim.com and on-site materials will also feature the videogame as the tour’s key sponsor. Brütal Legend is an epic action game from visionary developer Tim Schafer. Jack Black stars as Eddie Riggs, a legendary roadie summoned to a world of Heavy Metal where mountains are made of amplifiers, killer spiders spin guitar strings and Rock Legends roam the landscape. As Eddie, crush skulls with a battle axe, ravage the road in a super-charged Hot Rod and unleash the power of Rock to reign down fire from the sky – all to save humanity and become a Brütal Legend.

Nathan Explosion, William Murderface, Skwisgaar Swigelf, Toki Wartooth and Pickles – better known as Dethklok – will take to the road in support of the band’s latest CD release from Williams Street Records, Dethklok: The Dethalbum II , which will be released as both a standard and deluxe edition on September 29 from Williams Street Records. A limited-edition vinyl of the album will also be released at local record shops starting November 24. Bringing the animated band to life on stage each night will be series co-creator and composer Brendon Small along with an all-star band including the legendary Gene Hoglan, Bryan Beller and Mike Keneally. These real life-musicians will perform live while dark-lit and playing underneath a giant projection screen featuring all-new animation and music videos from Dethklok to create a truly unique concert experience.

Sharing the bill with Dethklok on this seven-week tour is Grammy Award-winning hard icons Mastodon, who are currently touring Europe and the UK with Metallica. The band’s groundbreaking new album Crack the Skye , was released on March 24, debuting on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #11.

Universally recognized as one of the most potent acts in music today, High on Fire creates “bad-ass” modern metal that merges primal fury and aggression, skyscraping riff explosions and hesher bombast with a monolithic heaviness. Described as “a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume and sheer heaviness,” High on Fire has burned the hard rock rulebook since its formation in 1998, forging a style and sound that is both unique and absolutely crushing. The group features vocalist and cult guitar hero Matt Pike, a founding member of the famed underground band SLEEP and one of heavy music’s most charismatic figures.

Considered one of the most intense, important, and influential metal/hardcore bands ever, Converge will release their anticipated new album Axe to Fall on Epitaph on October 20th. The release is the follow up to their highly-acclaimed No Heroes album, released on Epitaph in 2006. Though Converge has remained tight lipped about all aspects of Axe to Fall , the buzz surrounding the upcoming release already has the rumblings of potential aggressive album of the year.

DETHKLOK announce 'Mutilation on a Spring Night' 2024 tour

DETHKLOK 2023 LOUDER THAN LIFE PROMO, Nathan Zucker

Order Revolver's Dethklok collector's issue, limited-edition vinyl variants of all their albums, and official band shirts in exclusive colorways at  our shop .

The most brutal reunion of all time is getting an extension into 2024. Last year, Dethklok  — the real-life version of the cartoon  Metalocalypse   band — released their first album in 10 years, Dethalbum IV , and embarked on their first tour in 11 trips around the sun.

It wasn't a surefire thing that the band would continue grinding away, but at least for the time being they are. Today (February 6th), Dethklok have announced a spring 2024 headlining tour where they'll be traveling around the U.S. with power-metal maestros Dragonforce and melodeath goofballs Nekrogoblikon.

Dubbed the "Mutilation on a Spring Night" tour, the trek will begin April 7th in Myrtle Beach and snake throughout the U.S., mostly in the Midwest and on the West Coast, before concluding May 3rd in Portland.

"I love bands that celebrate guitar and bands that have a lot of fun onstage," Dethklok mastermind Brendon Small said in a press release. "I also love bands that don't, but for this tour, I think it makes sense to have a lot of dragons, goblins, and 'kloks together.

"If you're going to do this, you gotta go big and over the top. This is going to be a very fun show for people."

Tickets go on sale Friday February 9th at 10 a.m. local time. See the dates below.

Mastodon is currently touring Europe and the UK with Metallica in support of album “Crack the Skye,” released in March. As drummer Brann Dailor told Billboard earlier this year , the concept album is about “a crippled young man who experiments with astral travel” and whose spirit inhabits the body of Rasputin to save him from murder. The complex story is “all metaphors for personal shit,” added Dailor.

How to Watch the 2024 Met Gala

Billboard is giving away a pair of Mastodon Vans to the reader who can tweet the best story about “astral travel” in 140 characters or less.

Trending on Billboard

Fitting with the cosmic and fantastic themes of the album, Mastodon’s current fare, while still with plenty of edge, is less aggressive and more ethereal than their previous work. “Back when we first started and we were angry young guys, the music we were playing was super-aggressive,” guitarist Bill Kelliher told Billboard. “That had its place and time, with the raw vocal screaming. But this record has done a 180 from those days, in a positive way.”

The band also reported that it hoped to make a short film from the songs on “Crack the Skye,” a la Pink Floyd’s “The Wall;” the video for “Oblivion” won “Best Video” at the Kerrang! Magazine Awards in London on Monday.

Dethklok – otherwise known as Nathan Explosion, William Murderface, Skwisgaar Swigelf, Toki Wartooth and Pickles –will be brought to life by series co-creator and composer Brendon Small, along with a band including drummer Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Strapping Young Lad), bassist Bryan Beller ( Dweezil Zappa ) and guitarist Mike Keneally ( Frank Zappa ). Small was also the creator of cult hit animated series “Home Movies,” which ran from 1999-2004. Dethklok’s second album, “Dethklok: The Dethalbum II,” will be released on Sept. 29.

As Small told Billboard before the release of the first “Dethalbum,” Dethklok is “the most brutal band on the planet” who wrote the jingle for the Duncan Hills Coffee Co.

Brendon Small of Dethklok talks returning to the road, the complexities of a multimedia project and creating a satisfying conclusion for ‘Metalocalypse’

By: Nicholas Kobe Posted on: Tuesday, April 9, 2024

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WOUB) – Dethklok might be one of the most adventurous projects ever helmed in extreme metal.

Dethklok is a band, both a “real” one with multiple studio albums to their name; as well as a “fictional” one, being the stars of Adult Swim animated TV show Metalocalypse.

Although in the context of the TV show, Dethklok becomes so famous that they outweigh the influence of some governments; the real-life touring band hasn’t exactly come up short. Touring with bands like Mastodon and Babymetal, Dethklok has enjoyed pretty continuous success and relevance over the decades since their 2006 creation.

Now, Dethklok is closing the door on Metalocalypse with last year’s full-length movie Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar, and the band’s new studio album, Dethklok IV . While the long-term future of Dethklok may be uncertain, it’s clear that the group’s medium-crossing legacy will ensure them a permanent place in the hearts and minds of metalheads everywhere for a long time.

WOUB’s Nicholas Kobe spoke with Dethklok’s Brendon Small ahead of the band’s show at KEMBA! LIVE Thursday. Find a transcript of their conversation, edited for length and clarity, below.

The album cover for Dethklok's most recent release. It is depicting a spooky looking mountain with skulls carved into it.

Nicholas Kobe: If you had to describe Dethklok in one sentence, what would you say?

Brendon Small: I would say this is a show about a band that’s the biggest entertainment act on the planet. It just so happens that they’re an extreme metal band and death and destruction follow them wherever they go,

Absolutely. The group was on hiatus for a while. I guess in general, how has it been kind being back?

Small: The only reason we’re back is because people kept on watching all this stuff over the years. So the business suits at Max and Adult Swim all started kind of looking at each other and going, ‘Why is this show still so popular and why are there still such solid numbers and blah, blah, blah?’ That’s why we came back. There was an idea of a movie on the table and I thought, ‘This is exciting.’ I love movies more than anything. I’d love to make one. That’s why we’re back. Touring this past year with BabyMetal was kind of the ultimate tour for me because morale was really high. Our shows are very full and touring with a band like BabyMetal is so much fun because they’re thinking just like we do: ‘How much can we entertain an audience in one sitting? How much fun can we give an audience that likes extreme music? How much can we make it feel like a ride at Universal Studios?’ So I’d say it’s all been very positive.

You just talked about your synergy with Babymetal last year. How have things been going with DragonForce so far, and what led you to partnering up with them for this tour?

Small: I’ll tell you where we’re at right now. We’ve been in rehearsal this week. Tonight (April 5), our movie Army of the Doom Star premieres on Adult Swim at midnight. Tomorrow it drops on HBO Max and lives there. April 7 is our first date, and that’s the first time we’ll be playing with Nekrogoblikon and DragonForce. When we started talking about what this tour would be, because it’s a continuation of last year’s tour, what I wanted to do is I wanted to recreate the fun that we had. I think these two bands also have a sense of humor about themselves, and I think they also really put on a really fun show.

Army of the Doom Star  is going to be streaming so soon. Could you tell me about the process of working on the movie, and how you’re feeling about it now?

Small: Well, so this is the public dropping of it. The crazy thing is it came out last fall and it was only available through Pay-per-view and physical media. The physical media sold out the first day and sold out again and sold out again, all the Blu-rays and stuff like that. I’ve been around and I’ve gotten to talk to people who’ve seen the movie and it’s offering something that a lot of these shows aren’t doing right now, which is closure. TV shows go on forever and ever and ever. At some point, you realize that the story is not part of the story. It’s more about just continuing episodes after a while. This one had a story to tell and it had a big finale and that’s why I wanted to make sure we did it the right way. So this feature is a big important part of storytelling, which says ‘the end’ at the end as opposed to continuing and continuing and continuing. I like that we got to do that. The response that the fans have given me has been very overwhelmingly nice.

What was that decision like? To be like ‘Okay, now that we have this opportunity for this movie, this was going to be the end.’

Small: I knew what it was going to be about 10 years ago, to be honest. Then a lot of things kept it from happening. Then somewhere around 2019, we got a call to start playing Dethklok stuff again with Adult Swim. We said, ‘Oh, okay. I bet you this will be a cool thing and I bet if we do this, it’ll probably kick the door open and maybe allow for this final thing to kind of happen.’ I don’t know if that’s exactly how it happened, but that is what happened. Probably during the early part of the pandemic, we started talking about this movie project and all the things that would coincide. Not only just the movie, but I wanted to make sure I had a real deal score where we got to record with an orchestra and synthesizers and all kinds of cool stuff. I wanted to set that up. I wanted to write that.

So I worked with Sparks and Shadows, which is Bear McCreary’s team, who does the Lord of the Rings stuff, and Godzilla . I had that team ready to go. I had the film team from Titmouse Animation and I kind of had been working with a lot of people independently too, and I brought them into this. I had a writer’s team too, where I brought in people who had worked on the show before, including Brian Sane and Mark Brooks, who had been working on the show forever. Also, Janine Tulio, who I’ve been working for since way before Metalocaylpse . Then, in addition, Andrew, Kevin Walker who writes for David Fincher, wrote the movie Seven , Sleepy Hollow and The Killer , which just came out with Michael Fassbender this past year that David Fincher directed. I had them all in a room.

So I had the writing team assembled, the music team assembled, and the visual team assembled. So for two years, it’s been like a kitchen. For some of the stuff, you slow roast the beef for 24 hours, and at the end, you flash fry the potatoes or whatever. That’s how you make a movie. Some of this stuff takes a long time. It’s a big long blueprint and you’re trying to engineer it until the very end. So it’s like a kitchen with a lot of different burners on and some things are on the back burner and some things are on the front burner, but it all has to go to the same place and all get finished. So this was what I was going through around this time last year. I was still working on the movie. I was still finalizing the record and getting it all ready.

Yeah. You said that you’ve wanted to make a movie for a long time. Was there anything about making the movie that kind of surprised you or that you weren’t expecting?

Small: No, not really. The thing that’s great about animation is that there are a lot of options to kind of audition ideas as you’re going. You’re not locked into what you shoot the first day as if it were live-action. I can kind of rewrite jokes as I go. I can kind of reword things as I go. Since I play the majority of the characters, I can sit in my little edit bay and constantly craft and correct as I go, which is a freeing way to work. I do the same thing with music too, where I write a song and if I can beat it with something cooler along the way, a riff, an idea, or a transition, I will take that opportunity to continually fine-tune and course correct as I go.

But ultimately what I learned, and this is something that I knew but hadn’t experienced, is movies are about the big picture. It’s about the big idea, and all the little scenes have to serve the big idea and tell the story. If they’re not doing that, they better be funny. I wanted this to be a very big epic finale and put a period on ‘the end’. TV has three acts if you get to finish your show on your own terms, most shows get canceled and they never get to finish their show. The three acts are the pilot episode, which sets up your whole world and your characters and asks the right questions. The second act is every other episode that’s existed. Then act three is the final episode, or in this case, the movie, which kind of lands the notions and gives you the reason that you were watching this whole thing in the first place.

That’s also why I think it was really important for me. That’s why I wanted to do this and do it right. Plus putting out a record. Normally what I would do is I would take all these songs from the show and kind of put them on a record and elongate them. In this case, I didn’t have that. I wanted to do a brand new record from scratch which I’d never done with this project. So that was another worthwhile challenge.

Now that the record has been out for a little bit, how are you feeling about that record, especially now that you’re getting to play some of this stuff live?

Small: I like the record. I like the way it turned out and I like the reception to the record. Again, here’s the thing about all this stuff, it’s selfish, this whole project and being an artist. Ultimately, I think what you’re trying to do is please yourself and you’re trying to ask yourself, ‘Is this something that I’m interested in? Am I interested enough in this to carry this to the finish line? I know the finish line is all the way over there and I’m going to be crossing it. Sure, the engine will be on fire and there will be four flat tires, but do I care enough about what I’m doing to get all the way over there?’ So the answer is, these are the things I care about, making the movie, making songs, making this record, and also being able to take the DNA of this project and allow it to mutate as long as it’s moving forward.

Elaborating on that a little bit more, are there any particular mutations that you’ve made for this record that you were really happy with?

Small: Yeah. I think this record is our best-sounding record. I like the music. I think it’s got the perfect cross-section of what this project can do, which is that it can be funny if it wants to, and then it can be epic if it wants to. In this case, we got to put a little bit more moodiness into this thing because it all kind of coincides with the idea of this movie. So there are a lot of fun things I got to experiment with. I think metal is always shape-shifting. The thing about Metalocalypse and Dethklok is that I’m always kind of paying attention to what’s going on in modern metal. Whatever it is that excites my ear will be reflected inside of this record, which is just meant to sound like a modern metal record.

Could you point to any particular big changes in modern metal that inspired you between the third and fourth records?

Small: That’s a good question. But I mean, there are so many different bands that are doing such cool things. There’s so much cool froggy stuff going on in the instrumental guitar world that I’m always interested in. There are production aspects that I think are kind of always shape-shifting. I think just the way that distorted guitars are recorded now, they’re a little bit punchier now. It’s not even scoopy, but it’s somewhere between what Musshaggah is doing and Animals As Leaders. There’s just a tightness, there’s a sound to that. Using modern guitar equipment and stuff was all kind of part of it. Using plugins and amping ideas and all that stuff. That’s part of what modern metal is.

Then just getting Gene’s kit sounding appropriate was another kind of great thing that we did. Gene’s playing is just outstanding all the time. Like I said, it was a big dare to myself to go, ‘Okay, I’m not repeating anything. I’m only going to move this project forward as if I were just still doing this project. This is what it would sound like right now.’ I’m not going to go back and try to recreate an old sound because I don’t think that would be in service to anybody. I think the fans would kind of recognize it as like, ‘Oh, he’s trying to recreate something that he already did. I’m not interested in that.’ I think even in this fictional world, I think it needs to move forward. Like I said, it’s the same DNA, it’s just mutated.

Especially when in this fictional world, we’re talking about the biggest band of all time. They have to keep moving forward.

Small: Yeah. I mean, it’s true of all bands. There are a few bands that get away with being AC/DC on every record, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. But that’s the idea. How do you keep the creative ball moving forward? And that’s the question I ask myself. I don’t know how I get there, but I just know when I don’t have it or how I feel when I don’t think it’s there, and only with the things that I think I’ve gotten there ended up on the record.

Absolutely. Looking back on the project of Metalocalypse and Dethklok as a whole, is there any piece of lore or storytelling that you’re particularly proud of?

Small: I don’t know if I’m proud of anything I do. Seriously, my relationship with the art that I do is, as it’s being done, I am as focused and worried as much as I can be. Then when it’s done, it’s almost like I never did it. I never look back really, unless I have to relearn the songs and play them live. But when I get Dethklok back up on its feet, like we’ve been rehearsing this week, I’m excited to see that the songs that we’ve chosen are incredibly fun to play. The band plays them so well, and there’s an energy there that I’m really happy we got lucky enough to capture along the way. It’s funny when I finish a project, I do not look back. I do not check it out again. I am done with it. I basically said, ‘This is no longer mine. This is yours. Do with it as you please, internalize it. If you want to consider it, do whatever you want to do. But it’s no longer my project.’

Yeah. You get to the point where you’ve been with something so long, you’re like, ‘I got to put it out there and just let it be in the world,’ versus thinking about it all the time after I’m done.”

Small: Yeah, there’s an old story where a guy got arrested by the police for breaking into a museum and touching up one of his own paintings. I see how that could happen because at some point, what you want and what you get are two different things, but what you get versus what you thought you needed may not be the thing that works for your thing. You have to keep on course correcting, bending, and allowing and making sure you’re still kind of telling the bigger picture story.

Absolutely. We talked about it a little bit when you were talking about the movie and the album in general, but how has your philosophy, if it has at all, changed on balancing the comedic aspects of this project versus the death metal side of it?

Small: I mean, the idea with this is that there are a lot of different ways to be funny with this, but ultimately, the one thing that I keep coming back to is that I’ve got to serve it up as straight as possible. I don’t want to be poking fun and being goofy, going like, ‘Hey, look, we’re being silly.’ I want you to consider this band as deadly serious as they’re saying these things. I think that an important part of comedy is to believe the thing you’re saying as opposed to acting goofy and silly, which also works occasionally. We have songs that you would not know are comedy songs unless you really kind of looked deep into the lyrics and kind of realized that there’s comedy here. I mean, there are songs on this new record about food poisoning and stuff, and this is what, to me, it sounds like when you have food poisoning. Total brutality.

DETHKLOK is an illustrated/animated virtual powerhouse, occupying an elite space alongside GORILLAZ . Except DETHKLOK is bigger, better, more brutal, and totally legendary.

The world's most brutal band are the stars of the "Metalocalypse" TV series and films, co-created by Brendon Small . Revolver magazine calls the writer, director, and composer the "musical mastermind" behind DETHKLOK . A vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Small has made four DETHKLOK albums and assorted releases with legendary metal drummer Gene Hoglan ( DARK ANGEL , DEATH , TESTAMENT , STRAPPING YOUNG LAD ).

"I love bands that celebrate guitar and bands that have a lot of fun onstage. I also love bands that don't, but for this tour, I think it makes sense to have a lot of dragons, goblins, and 'kloks together," says Small . "If you're going to do this, you gotta go big and over the top. This is going to be a very fun show for people."

Last year's "Babyklok" co-headlining trek was the first DETHKLOK tour in over a decade. "I had no idea how much fun the 'Babyklok' tour would be," remembers Small . "The BABYMETAL girls are delightful, like three princesses from outer space, great singers, and great dancers. Their band is bonkers good. I magically found my way into this parallel universe. The show itself is a great challenge as a vocalist, guitar player, and multitasker. The goal is always to put on the absolute best show that I can."

2023 saw a flurry of activity from the melodic death metal titans. "Army Of The Doomstar" was a sequel to "Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem" , released in 2013. 2023 also saw the release of the "Army of the Doomstar Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" . "Dethalbum IV" was the most celebrated album of the band's career, boasting unstoppable anthems like "Aortic Desecration" , "SOS" and "Gardener Of Vengeance" .

" 'Dethalbum IV' is a fantastic death metal album," wrote New Noise . "Despite DETHKLOK being an animated band, the music is very real, delivering that scratch to itch the need for good metal."

Rolling Stone named "Dethalbum IV" one of the 11 best metal albums of 2023. "The first DETHKLOK album in more than a decade is totally brutal — and totally worth the wait," they declared. " Small and Hoglan 's dexterous playing also make the music stand majestically on its own terms. You don't need to be in on the joke to jump into the pit and mosh along."

Adult Swim aired four seasons of "Metalocalypse" from 2006 to 2013. Premiere global and media entertainment company Warner Bros. Discovery distributes the "Metalocalypse" series and feature films.

"I knew taking on this project meant I'd have to wring everything out of the sponge to make it all work," Small says of the massive effort put behind the series, movies, albums, and soundtracks. "But this is how I have fun, putting it together, and having the luxury of writing, directing, producing, and making music for something and seeing it all the way through. And when you have great collaborators, everyone elevates each other. I have to deliver everything I can, so I'm proud of it, and they are proud to participate in it."

"This is a very fun time with the tour, the album, and the movie. I don't know if DETHKLOK will be touring forever," he adds. "So, it's important for people to know they should get it while it's hot."

Animated metal band Dethklok brings tour with Babymetal to the Masonic for two nights

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: April 24, 2024 / 5:39 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

The popular death metal band led by Brendan Small, the creative force behind popular Adult Swim animated show "Metalocalypse," Dethklok comes to the Masonic in San Francisco for two shows with co-headliners Babymetal.

Arguably the second most popular virtual band behind Gorillaz (the animated group helmed by Blur singer Damon Albarn), Dethklok made their as the stars of "Metalocalypse" when the show created by Small and partner/voice actor Tommy Blancha debuted in 2006. The world biggest death metal band in the program's absurd and surreal alternate universe, Dethklok stands as the planet's seventh largest economy despite the fact that the group's members are idiotic incompetents incapable of doing anything besides writing and performing brutal metal songs.

The quintet of singer Nathan Explosion (who was inspired by Cannibal Corpse vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher), guitarists Skwisgaar Skwigelf and Toki Wartooth, bassist William Murderface and drummer Pickles live and work in their massive fortress-like home and studio Mordhaus, venturing into the world to secure lucrative sponsorship deals and play huge concerts for their legions of fanatical followers with outlandish stage theatrics like over-the-top pyrotechnics, lasers and a giant swinging pendulum blade, inevitably resulting in widespread death and destruction.

Over the course of four seasons and a special broadcast on Adult Swim, "Metalocalypse" became one of the network's more popular shows and a favorite among musicians, with such notable figures as King Diamond, Alice Cooper, Jon Hamm, Werner Herzog, Jack Black and members of Metallica, Exodus, Emperor and Mastodon appearing on the show. Dethklok further built on its fanbase with a series of studio albums featuring the satirical songs featured the show like "Murmaider," "Bloodrocuted" and "Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle." The band also delivered entertaining live performances with widescreen clips of the animated band projected behind Small and his talented band including monster drummer Gene Hogland (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Devin Townsend) and former Frank Zappa collaborator Mike Kenneally on guitar.

Dethklok would make regular festival appearances and tour with the likes of Mastodon, High On Fire, Machine Head and the Black Dahlia Murder. After the broadcast of the hour-long rock opera special, "Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem" in 2013, the band continued to perform, but the project went on hiatus after the show was cancelled two years later.

The band returned to action in 2019, playing the Adult Swim Festival to ecstatic crowds. Dethklok also returned to the festival post-pandemic in 2022. The following year, Smalls was at last able to release the final chapter in the Dethklok story with the film Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar , which was accompanied by both a soundtrack and the band issuing its acclaimed fourth studio recording,  Dethalbum IV .

With the show having run its course, the band's current tour could be Dethklok's last hurrah as it takes to the road with previous touring partners and co-headliners Babymetal which stops at the Masonic for two nights starting Wednesday . A sensation in their native Japan since first forming in 2010, the group mixes elements of heavy metal with elements of J-Pop and "kawaii" -- the Japanese "culture of cuteness" as exemplified by Hello Kitty and Pokemon. Singer Suzuka Nakamoto had impressed producer Kobametal (aka Key Kobayashi) in her earlier girl groups Karen Girl's and Sakura Gakuin when he wanted to start a new band performing a heavier style of music.

Initially a successful offshoot of Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became independent in 2013 and enjoyed growing popularity with the release of their self-titled debut the following year. Featuring Nakamoto along with fellow singers Moa Kikuchi (also a member of Sakura Gakuin) and Yui Mizuno executing synchronized dance moves and melodic vocals backed by a group of shredding metal session players known as the Kami Band, the album delivered a dizzying juxtaposition of sunshine pop and metallic crunch. The band rocketed to success in Japan and were playing sold-out shows to thousands when the girls were still in their teens.

The notoriety in their native land soon led to international touring in Europe and North America, with Babymetal appearing at major metal festivals and opening for Lady Gaga. By the time the band was set to release their sophomore album Metal Resistance in 2016, they were headlining Wembley Arena in London and the huge Tokyo Dome to 55,000 screaming fans. More high-profile support gigs with the Red Hot Chili Peppers followed.

While the band suffered some hardship with the accidental death of guitarist Mikio Fujioka late in 2017 after he fell from an observation deck and the departure of Mizuno due to health reasons the next year, Babymetal continued to tour and in 2023 announced the addition of Momoko Okazaki as Fujioka's permanent replacement. The band plays fan favorites and songs from its fourth album The Other One  at the Masonic. Opening acts on the two nights will be different, with hyper-technical British power metal band DrangonForce playing Wednesday and theatrical LA-based melodic death metallers Nekrogoblikon kicking off the show Thursday.

Dethklok and Babymetal Wednesday-Thursday, April 24-25, 6 p.m. $75.75 The Masonic
