How to Transfer a Malaysia Long Term Visit Pass in Penang

Have an expired passport with a Malaysia Long Term Visit Pass that's still valid and don't know what to do? This step by step guide will walk you through the exact, simplest way to solve your problem.

Malaysia_Long_term_visit_pass_renewal_forms

If you are a resident of Penang — if not, check out our list of great things to do in Penang  — and travel a lot like me, you may end up running out of pages in your passport. That’s what happened to me in the Summer of 2019. As I was prepared for another long period of travel overseas, and having only four empty pages left in my passport, I needed to get a new one.

This was done quite swiftly in the Embassy of Italy in Kuala Lumpur . There was a problem though: what about my Malaysia Long Term Visit Pass, which will expire in two years, and is still stuck inside my old passport?

In other words, I needed Malaysian Immigration to update my previous, still valid Multiple entry visa for Malaysia to my new passport. But how to transfer my old Malaysia Long Term Visit Pass to my brand new passport in Penang?

I didn’t know what to do. That’s what I am going to teach you in this post, to make your experience of transferring your Malaysia Long Term Visit Pass in Penang as fast and stressful as possible.

Where to Transfer a Malaysia Long Term Visit Pass in Penang?

Malaysia_Long_term_visit_pass_renewal_seberang_prai_immigration_building

First of all, where to go transferring your Long Term Visit Pass in Penang? It’s confusing, as Penang has two Immigration Departments, one on the island, and one on the mainland, set off a busy highway intersection near Seberang Jaya and the town of Bukit Mertajam — if you have time on your hands, see the best things to do in BM here . They include Insta-worthy spots like Frog Hill , and many Seberang Perai hiking trails , including an easy and scenic stroll to Bukit Juru .

These are the exact locations:

Penang Island Immigration Office in George Town:

Penang Immigration Office in Seberang Jaya:

As a foreign national resident of Penang State, all visa and passport business must be conducted on the mainland, not on Penang island . Even if you reside on the island. Go figure.

Anyways, the best way to reach Penang Immigration Office in Seberang Jaya is to use your own car (there’s parking available outside, just don’t forget to bring parking coupons valid for the Seberang Prai area, which cost 0.40RM per hour) or catch a Grab from Penang .

Enter the building and go on the first floor, to the first office to the left called Bahagian Visa, Pas & Permit — you can’t miss it as you’ll see loads of people waiting at the door every day.

Here’s the completed process to transfer your Long Term Social Pass into a brand new passport explained step by step. Remember, it’s very important that you transfer your old Multiple entry visa for Malaysia to avoid a potential 500RM fine when re-entering the country with a new passport that doesn’t contain an updated Malaysia Long Term Visit Pass.

Verify Documents and Get your Number to Renew your Malaysian Long Term Visit Pass

Malaysia_Long_term_visit_pass_renewal_required_documents

Enter the waiting hall and go to the first counter to the left. An immigration officer will check that all your documents are in order. You will need:

  • Duly compiled Immigration Forms IMM 55 and IMM 12. These will be handed to you over the counter upon arrival.
  • Original new passport
  • Original old passport containing the Social Pass that’s still valid
  • 1 x photocopy of your spouse/sponsor Malaysian IC
  • 1 x photocopy of your marriage certificate
  • 1 x photocopy of both front pages of your passport including the biometric data and picture
  • 1 x photocopy of your old Malaysia Long Term Social Pass

Once you have produced all of the above, you will be given a number and asked to wait for your turn.

Malaysia_Long_term_visit_pass_renewal_waiting_in_line

If you don’t have photocopies ready or forgot to print out something, don’t panic. Go downstairs towards the exit of the Immigration Building and you will find several shops that can help you with print outs and photocopies. They cost more than in the city of course ( 2RM for printing a black and white page and about 0.30RM for a photocopy ), but you’ll spare yourself the hassle of having to drive to Seberang Jaya and find a shop, return here and find another parking.

Submit your Application for renewal of your Long Term Visit Pass in Penang

Your number will be called and you will submit your application, including both passports, to an immigration officer who will check that everything is in order. You will then be asked to sit down and play the waiting game again.

How and How Much to Pay for the Transfer of your Malaysia Long Term Visit Pass sticker to a new passport

The last counter on the left side of the waiting hall is the Juruwang (cashier). A person will call your name without going by numbers, so be alert. They will issue a receipt and ask for cash payment. Credit cards are not accepted , so bring enough cash. In this case, it’s not much.

To transfer your Malaysian Long Term Social Pass the cost is 19RM inclusive of government tax . The new visa issue fee is free of cost.

Once you have paid, you will be given a receipt and asked to wait once again.

Collect your New Passport with your New Malaysian Long Term Social Pass

Depending on the number of people on that particular day, you will have to wait for about an hour to get your passport back. Be aware that there’s no numbering system at this stage, and one immigration officer will call your name, so be alert and wait patiently. Once they call your name, approach the counter and collect both your old and new passports with your shiny new Malaysian Long Term Social Pass extension.

It pays to check that your name, dates and passport details are all printed correctly in your new Long Term Visit Pass. If there are no issues, mission accomplished, you are free to go.

Best Timings to go Renew your Malaysian Long Term Social Pass

Seberang Jaya Immigration Office opens from 8am to 1pm and 2pm to 5.30pm . On Fridays, there is longer rest time between 12pm and 2.45pm .

I arrived a bit late at 11am to avoid the early morning queue for spouse visa applications, but ended up waiting over the lunch break and received my passport back at 2.30pm. I suggest you apply at 10am to be able to get your new Malaysian Long Term Social Pass back before the lunch break at 1pm. It should take less than 2 hours on a normal busy day, all in all.

Also remember that to facilitate those who are working, the Immigration office is also open on weekends from 8am to 1pm . Good luck with your Malaysian Long Term Social Pass renewal!

Guide to long term social visit pass in malaysia

The Expatriate’s Guide To Long Term Social Visit Passes In Malaysia

In Malaysia, expatriates holding Category 1 and 2  Employment Passes are permitted to bring their immediate family members with them, known as dependents. For family members who fall outside the definition of a dependent, the solution is often a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTSVP) .

This article provides a complete overview of the function of a Long-Term Visit Pass and how to obtain one from the Malaysian Immigration Department, specifically their Expatriates Services Division (ESD).

Here’s how we’ll break it down:

  • We’ll start with an explanation of what a LTSVP is used for
  • We’ll compare it to a Dependent Pass so you understand which is right for your case
  • We’ll cover the process of applying for a LTSVP
  • We’ll try to persuade you to get our help!

Note: Spouses of Malaysian residents can also apply for a Long-Term Social Visit Pass which carries different requirements and permissions, but this article is specifically written for expatriates and Malaysian companies employing them .

If that applies to you, let’s begin!

🔑 Key Takeaways:

  • An LTSVP allows certain family members of a Employment Pass holder (known as a principal) to accompany them in Malaysia for six months to five years.
  • A LTVSP is usually used as an alternative for family members not eligible for a Dependent Pass.
  • For children 18 years old an above, you’ll need an LTSVP.
  • The duration of a LTSVP corresponds to the duration of the principal’s Employment Pass.
  • Each LTSVP application costs RM450 and can take up to 14 working days to process, not including the time taken to prepare required documents for submission.
  • There is no need for LTSVP holders to leave the country for a minimum period before their pass can be renewed.
  • Save yourself the trouble and engage MISHU to help apply for your LTSVP today !

What is a Long-Term Social Visit Pass?

A LTSVP is a long-term pass that allows certain family members of a Employment Pass holder (known as a principal) to accompany them and reside in Malaysia for six months to five years .

How long will your LTSVP be valid for?

The validity period of a LTSVP corresponds to the validity period of the principal Employment Pass holder.

However, if the pasport validity of the LTSVP applicant is less than that of the principal Employment Pass, then the validity of their LTSVP will follow their passport instead. While the LTVSP can always be renewed, it would be a good idea to ensure the applicant’s passport is up to date.

Long Term Social Visit Pass vs Dependent Pass

The main difference between these two passes is the individuals that fall under them, which can be found in the table below:

As of September 2023, an application for a LTSVP and Dependent Pass both cost RM450 , not including other immigration and processing fees.

Furthermore, in both cases, holders of both passes are not allowed to work in Malaysia without first applying for an Employment Pass of their own. There is no preferential treatment given on the basis of a relationship with an existing Employment Pass holder – their application will be judged on its own merits.

If you believe a Dependent Pass is more suited for you, our FAQ on Dependent Passes might come in handy.

Otherwise, time to get to work and go over the application process.

Long Term Social Visit Pass Application Process

Before beginning the application process, be sure that the required documents below are prepared.

Hi. If I am in Malaysia through LTSVP (marriage), what are my options for bringing my mother here? If I get endorsement to work while I am on a Long Term Social Visit Pass, and I earn more than the 5,000 Ringgit Threshold, can i bring my mother to Malaysia?

If not, can I bring my mother through my Malaysian wife (she is a citizen). Thank you

Thanks for getting in touch. We forwarded your question to our Employment Pass expert and this is their reply:

1. Your current Long Term Visit Pass (LTSV) / spouse visa should also allow you to apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass for your parent.

2. It’s worth noting that compared to a normal Employment Pass, the spouse visa is not tied to a specific employer, which provides flexibility in employment options.

Hope that answers your question, and let us know if you need any help with the application!

Sincerely, The MISHU Editorial Team

I married a Malaysian and currently holds a long term social visit pass.

Can I work in malaysia?

Can I open a bank account in malaysia?

Hi Chee Wee,

Thank you for the question.

We forwarded it to our Employment Pass expert and here’s their reply:

1. Yes, a spouse visa allows you to work.

2. HOWEVER , you first need to apply for an Endorsement of Work Permit in Putrajaya or your nearest state immigration office.

3. The permit is free, though your spouse will need to be present at the application.

4. You should have no issues opening a bank account in Malaysia.

5. If you already have an account with an international bank, you can even try asking them if they can assist with connecting you with a Malaysian branch to start the process online.

Our representative will be getting in touch with you to check if you need further assistance.

Hope this helps, and all the best from us at the MISHU Editorial team 🙂

I have a query – I am employed and want bring mother-in-law to Malaysia on LTSVP. Can i apply on my own? what all documents will be needed? where can i find the forms? The url links provided are not working anymore.

Do i need to ask my company to initiate the process?

Thanks for getting in touch.

We reached out to our employment pass expert regarding your inquiry, and here’s their response:

1. Best to ask a company to handle it as LTSVP applications must be done through their Expatriate Services Division (ESD) account . 2. The required documents are as listed out in our guide. 3. The forms will be filled in online when submitting the application via the ESD portal.

Hope this helps!

By the way, we checked the links on this page and they’re all working fine, could you specify which links you found were broken? We’d greatly appreciate it.

Best regards, The MISHU Editorial Team

Hi, If I get a Long term visa pass, am I allowed to open a bank account and can I bring a shipment of my personal things? Thanks

1. A bank account opening is usually normally by company recommendation. 2. Your shipment of personal items will be subject to rules by the Malaysian Customs Department, so as long as there’s nothing on their list of prohibited items, you should be good. 3. However, if you’re asking whether a shipment of your items in included as a package with a LTVSP application, then we’re afraid not!

Hi, I’m a UK citizen with a Malaysia PR intending to return to Malaysia with my family. Would my wife be eligible for a LTSVP? Guidance online suggests this is available for spouses of a Malaysian citizen only. I would not need an employment pass to work in Malaysian given my PR status. Please advise. Thanks.

We apologise for the delayed response as our Employment Pass team was occupied – but they’ve seen your message and here’s their response:

1. As they’ve not encountered a similar situation to yours, they feel it would not be right to offer a professional opinion on the matter. 2. They suggest you contact the Immigration Department for a definitive answer.

Let us know if there’s any other questions you have, but I’m afraid that’s all we can offer on this matter.

I had worked in Malaysia for 7 years as an Account Payable Executive with MNC. Now I married with Malaysian husband, is it possible to apply for PR after LTSVP? How long do I need to hold for the LTSVP to apply for PR?

Dear Pricilla,

You’ll be eligible for PR application once you’ve been in Malaysia for at least five years .

So we hope to see you in five years!

Six Months Cooling Period

Some applicants mentioned that they were able to submit their LTSVP applications without the 6 months cooling period. It might be case by case basis, kindly clarify with the officer.

Jul 2022: In the comments here, some said that they submitted their LTSVP application right after marriage registration but others mentioned cooling period is still applicable.

Sep 2022:  Some said cooling period is only applicable to foreign husband. Others mentioned it’s not required.

Checklist for LTSVP application – wife/ husband to Citizen of Malaysia (State of Selangor)

Bispoint Group of Accountants

https://www.facebook.com/groups/LoveIsNotTourismMalaysia/posts/1598561890506390

Thank you for all the information in this group. My British husband succeeded in applying for the Long Term Social Visit Pass (LTSVP) also known as the Malaysian Spouse Visa, in the first attempt itself. We would like to share our experience and the steps which we took in obtaining the LTSVP and hopefully, this serves as some sort of a guide to those who are applying. We have to admit that this is not an easy process. They will be lots of hurdles, challenges, delays, frustrations, countless of trips to the Immigration departments (we went there at least once every fortnight to get updates and were in and out of different government offices every week or so!) and etc. However, keep calm and know that with determination, persistence and LOTS of PATIENCE, the approval will come!

WHICH IMMIGRATION BRANCH OFFICE TO APPLY

The first/new LTSVP application must be made in the Immigration state branch office in accordance with the address stated in the Malaysian Spouse NRIC. In our case, the address in my NRIC is in Klang and hence, the Immigration Branch Office that we went to for the LTSVP application is the Jabatan Imigresen Negeri Selangor in Bangunan PKNS, Shah Alam.

WHAT HAPPENED IF THE SOCIAL PASS/SPECIAL PASS OF THE FOREIGN SPOUSE EXPIRED BEFORE OR DURING THE LTSVP APPLICATION

The social pass/special pass must be valid at the time of the submission of the LTSVP application. We had to renew and extend my husband’s social pass and later on special pass several times during the process. We obtained the first extension from the Immigration Putrajaya Immigration Department on the grounds of “referring to state Immigration for LTSVP process”. The second extension was also obtained from the Putrajaya Immigration Department on the grounds of “pending LTSVP application”. The third extension was done in the Shah Alam immigration on the grounds of “pending LTSVP decision”. The third renewals and onwards required an appeal letter or “Surat Rayuan”. In our case, the immigration officer in the Shah Alam Immigration prepared the said Surat Rayuan for us and we just had to sign it accordingly. With that, we obtained the third extension without any difficulty. His third extension expired once again when the LTSVP was still pending approval. We checked with the immigration officer in the Shah Alam office to see if we require the fourth extension. According to the officer, if the pass expires when a LTSVP has been accepted for processing and is pending decision, no further extension is required. However, if the application comes back to the applicant requiring further information/documents to support the application, then an extension of pass must be made.

HOW LONG WAS THE LTSVP APPLICATION PROCESS?

We applied on 16 November 2021 and obtained approval on 11 February 2022. Our documents for submission were complete and in order and hence we were not called up in between to submit further information / documents in support of our application. If the immigration calls up for submission of further or additional information/document, the process might be delayed and could not take longer.

HOW SOON CAN YOU APPLY FOR LTSVP?

In our case, we applied immediately right after our Registration of Marriage. Note that the 6 months waiting period is no longer applicable. We went to the Immigration Office in Shah Alam on the very same day with our ROM, right after the signing ceremony to get the list of documents required and then went back a week later with the complete documents for submissions.

FEES INVOLVED

Every extension of social visit pass/special pass : RM100 LTSVP application fees : RM90 Security Bond : differs according to the country of the foreign spouse. For British foreign spouses, the security bond is RM1,500.00.

🗂DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE LTSVP APPLICATION

🗂 The list of documents required is different in every immigration branches and the list gets updated very frequently so make sure you get the latest list from the relevant immigration branch right before your application. The following documents, in both originals and photocopies, must be brought along during submission.

📌 Borang IM.12 Borang Permohonan Pas Lawatan Required : Foreign spouse passport sized photos

📌Borang IM. 38 Permohonan Untuk Visa

📌Sijil Daftar Perkahwinan / Marriage Certificate

📌Cabutan Daftar Perkahwinan. This is different from Marriage Certificate. This can be obtained by applying for it at the JPN Putrajaya office. The fee is RM50 per copy. The original copy must be submitted to the Immigration Department.

📌 Surat Penaja Required : Latest 3 months payslips of sponsor, latest 3 months bank statements of sponsor, NRIC copy of sponsor, latest 3 months EPF statements of sponsor

Step by step guide to Long Term Social Visit Pass Malaysia (Spouse Visa) & PR (Permit Masuk)

I am married to a Malaysian citizen and this is a guide to applying for and renewing a Long Term Social Visit Pass (Spouse Visa) or PR Permanent Residence (Permit Masuk).

Thursday 7 December 2023

Transferring spouse pass (ltsvp) to a new passport.

I recently replaced my passport. Once I had received it I decided to transfer my LTSVP to the new passport at Jalan Duta (KL).

Some people suggest that you can leave it until you renew your LTSVP and have the new pass put directly into the new passport, but there are 2 potential issues with this:

1) You will not be able to renew your LTSVP online and will have to try to get an appointment to apply for renewal in person. Getting an appointment for renewals can be difficult.

2) If you intend to travel then the pass must be in your passport (you may also need the pass in your passport if you are ever stopped by immigration)

In advance of submitting my request I went to Jalan Duta to ask about the process and was told that I needed an STO appointment, my Malaysian spouse to be present and to complete Surat Akuan, Imm55 & Im38. Therefore I had a Surat Akuan attested at a Commissioner For Oaths (cost RM30) and completed the other forms.

But when I returned on my STO appointment date with these forms I was told that they weren’t needed. Instead the correct process is:

a) Make STO appointment, choose the correct office, the ‘Kupitan Passport' option and your preferred time and date https://sto.imi.gov.my/STO/home.php

b) Complete the IM12 form (and attach passport photo) and bring it to your appointment. You can get IM12 from Immigration or download it online

c) Bring originals and copies of the following to your appointment:

i) Old and new passports (copy of bio pages only)

ii) Marriage certificate

iii) Spouse IC (copy of both sides)

iv) Current LTSVP

It took 2.5 hours from taking a number to collecting the passports, but I was not charged a fee for transferring the LTSVP.

My new passport has now been registered on the Immigration system so I can use it for renewal of LTSVP, and I can also use it at the e-Gates when travelling through KLIA1 and KLIA2.
