11 Best Things To Do In the Port of Kotor | Cruise Port Guide

Port of Kotor Montenegro

The city of Kotor and the entire state of Montenegro may just be the best-kept secret and the hidden gem of the Mediterranean.

The exploration and sightseeing of this stunning old city start even before you reach the port as the 1-hour long sail-in is a treat itself! Make sure to get up before the arrival and soak up this beautiful bay which was voted one of the 25 most beautiful bays in the world.

The Boka Bay is known as the southernmost fjord in Europe and is part of UNESCO’s world heritage together with the old town of Kotor. In this article, read about:

Port of Kotor

Kotor Bay sail-in as well as the view of the medieval port of Kotor are absolutely mind-blowing! Surrounded by massive mountains, this is where you’ll witness the beauty of the Adriatic coast at its finest.

Kotor cruise ship terminal has only one pier and cruise ships dock about 300 ft away from the city gate from where you’ll be able to see the city wall as soon as you get off the ship.

Sometimes, large cruise ships anchor in the bay and use tender boats to transfer their cruise passengers ashore.

There are usually no more than 3 cruise ships at the same time. The tender rides take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on how far you are anchored. Take the tender ride as a free sightseeing tour of the coast because the scenery is truly spectacular!

Getting Around Port Kotor Montenegro

  • The port itself has a small souvenir shop and a toilet free of charge for you to use. Right next to the port building, there is a cafe where you have free wi-fi available for the guests.
  • There isn’t any ATM in the port itself, however, on the other side of the same building there is a bank with an ATM. There are plenty of ATMs and banks at the main city square just 300 meters away from the port if that one is busy.
  • The port area is flat and wheelchair-accessible, however, the old city is partially hilly so make sure you wear comfortable clothes.
  • Kotor’s old town area starts as soon as you leave the pier, and the best way to explore it is on foot . The alternative and most convenient options to get around the city are by taxi or hop on hop off bus.
  • Taxis are available at the exit but check the prices in advance. The ones you find at the front are not the ones with the taximeter but at a fixed price. If you wish to use the ones locals use, they are usually parked by the shopping center “Kamelija”, approximately 600 meters away from the port (check for directions in the part of the article below).
  • The currency in Montenegro is EURO (€). Cards are accepted almost everywhere apart from the taxis, so make sure you bring cash on you. It is best to use any other card but American Express because it’s not as widely accepted as Visa for example.
  • Hop on Hop off bus tours are also available, sometimes in the port itself or at the city gate. The tours include the visit of the entire bay with the audio guide, plus a walking tour scheduled a few times per day after your bus tour. The buses run every 30 minutes and if you need a wheelchair-accessible one, then you should ask for the double-decker option since they have a single open-top bus too. Some of the stops are Bajova Kula (a beautiful beach bar), Perast (a charming coastal town from where you can catch a 5-minute boat ride to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks), Risan (a historic village where you have an included entrance to the Roman Mosaics), and back to the Kotor old town for your walking tour where you will cover all the important sites in approximately 40 minutes.
  • Kotor Bus Station is located 800 m (a 10-minute walk) from the Kotor cruise terminal. As the old town is walkable, there’s no need to take the local bus, however, if you’re staying for a few days in Kotor, you may consider this option. The local and intercity buses are operated by Blue Line, and you can check the schedules at http://blueline-mne.com/ (although the website is in Montenegrin). Check for online tickets and departures at https://busticket4.me/ and https://getbybus.com/
  • Tivat Airport is the nearest airport and is located 8 km/5 miles (a 10-minute drive) southwest of Kotor cruise port. The main airport in Montenegro is Podgorica Airport (Podgorica is the capital city) and is located 89 km/55 miles (a 1h 30-minute drive) northeast of Kotor.

11 Best Things to Do in the Port of Kotor

The great thing about Kotor cruise port is that there are plenty of things to explore in the old town just 300 ft away from the port.

Alternatively, you can explore the beautiful coastal town of Perast and its iconic Our Lady of the Rocks, Montenegro’s natural treasures, or visit Dubrovnik if you’re staying in Kotor for a few days.

The country of Montenegro is quite small and everything is close by, so you won’t waste much time driving around if you want to stay in the Bay of Kotor area.

1. Fort of St. John

St. John’s Fortress is probably one of the first things you will see once you approach the great city walls.

If you look up you will see a church high up on the hill, but if you look beyond at the very top you will notice a fort with a waving flag of Montenegro.

The construction of St. John’s Fortress started in the 9th century and lasted for six centuries. Its main purpose was to protect Kotor town from the invaders.

If you decide you are brave enough to climb and enjoy the astonishing views of the old town and the bay, prepare yourself, as it will take approximately 1400 stairs until you reach the fortress. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and keep hydrated, as the hike to Kotor Fortress can be quite strenuous.

However, don’t be afraid if you are not that athletic to climb to the top – the view from the 16th-century Church of Our Lady of Remedy which you reach after maybe 400-500 stairs is equally beautiful and has an amazing position offering great photo opportunities!

2. Kotor Cable Car

One of the latest Kotor attractions is a cable car which offers visitors a unique and breathtaking way to experience the stunning landscapes of Kotor Bay and its surrounding mountains.

As the cable car ascends, passengers are treated to incredible vistas of Kotor Bay, the historic town of Kotor, and Lovćen Mountain (also known as Montenegrin Olympus).

In only 11 minutes, the cable car will take you to 1.348 m above sea level to Lovćen National Park, where you’ll get to chance to go hiking, cycling in the national park, or simply enjoy culinary delicacies in a restaurant overlooking the bay.

The Lower Dub Station is located on Budva-Tivat road, around 8 minutes’ drive from the port of Kotor.

3. Beach & Shopping

For those of you who are just looking to relax and maybe get some souvenirs, Kotor Beach is located 8 minutes walk (550 m) from the exit of the port and so is the shopping mall “Kamelija “.

They are super easy to find – Upon exiting the port turn to your left, and the first thing you will see is a little bridge and a park right after it. Stay on that path along the coast and about 500 meters from there on your right-hand side will be the shopping center.

If you continue another 200 meters, on your left-hand side will be the public beach open for everyone. It is a pebbled beach and there is no entrance fee unless you want to use the section with chairs and umbrellas. There is a board where you can see the prices displayed.

4. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon

Built in the 12 th century, the Romanesque Cathedral of Saint Tryphon is one of the two catholic cathedrals in Montenegro and one of the best-preserved monuments in Kotor.

It was built in honor of the patron of the city Saint Tryphon, on the site of an old cathedral dating from 809.

The Cathedral is located inside the city walls and very easy to find – Once you pass through the city gate, you will see a clock tower and turn right.

You will notice there are a lot of cobblestone streets in the old town, so be very mindful of that. Although Kotor is small, comfortable shoes are recommended.

Once you have turned to your right, keep walking down the cobblestone street until you reach a piazza (a small square) and after that, a turning to your left will bring you to this gorgeous square with many cafes and restaurants offering a stunning view of the Cathedral.

Bear in mind that it is a religious sight and covered knees and shoulders are required. To enter the cathedral there are three steps, however, accessibility to the bell towers for wheelchairs is not possible.

5. Maritime Museum of Montenegro

At the stone’s throw from the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, you’ll come across another Kotor old town landmark – the Maritime Museum dating from the 19th century, housed in a beautiful Baroque palace.

It is located in the very heart of the old town, and you will easily recognize its entrance with visible cannons in front of the palace doors.

Unfortunately, the original building was destroyed in the 1979 earthquake and rebuilt between 1982 and 1984. The museum features a rich collection of naval artifacts, including model ships, paintings, and antique furniture, spread over two levels that you can visit in 45 minutes up to 1 hour.

6. Church of Saint Luke

This lovely medieval Orthodox church dominates the Piazza Greca Square, known for its beautiful architecture dating from the Roman and Byzantine periods.

It is the only church in the town of Kotor that hasn’t suffered severe damages during the earthquake in 1979 that almost destroyed the entire old town.

Until the middle of the 12th century, the church used to serve as a Catholic school and was later transformed into an Orthodox church. It symbolizes the harmonious co-existence of Catholic and Orthodox people and has two altars, a Catholic and an Orthodox one.

The entrance is free of charge, however, keep in mind that is a religious sight and covered knees and shoulders are required.

The church itself is one of the smallest in town and there are no steps, but in case you are using a wheelchair, make sure to catch the less crowded time to maximize your visit and overall experience.

7. Perast & Our Lady of the Rocks Island

The island Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Skrpjela) is located approximately 10 km/6 miles away from the port of Kotor, across the little fisherman village of Perast.

You will first spot this tiny island on your sail in Kotor and you will notice there is another one right next to it – Saint George Island that is closed to the public. The ride to Perast from Kotor port takes about 15 minutes.

The view of Saint George island (the left one, with trees), and Our Lady of the Rocks island (on the right) from Perast

Our Lady of the Rocks is an artificial island, which according to the stories was made by the seamen from Perast and Kotor, who brought stones o n their sailboats . The island was named after the church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rocks that proudly guards the entrance to the port.

According to the legend, a fisherman from Perast found an icon of the Holy Mother of God with Christ on a nearby sea rock, and the seamen vowed to build a church on the island.

The church was built in the 17 th century. Man-made, the island had to be maintained because the sea and the tides would take away a certain amount of rocks each year, so the seaman continued to bring the stones.

That tradition is alive even today and the custom from the old times has been recently renewed. Today it is called Fasinada from Perast and it is held at the end of the day on the 22nd of July when citizens from Kotor and Perast sail on their fishermen’s boats in a circle and throw rocks so that the island can retain its shape.

8. Njegusi Village

Located in the municipality of Cetinje, a 40-minute drive from the port of Kotor, Njegusi is a traditional village best known as the birthplace of the Petrovic dynasty which ruled Montenegro for almost two and a half centuries (from the end of the 17th until the 20th).

Apart from its historical importance, the village is famous for the high-quality cheese and prosciutto that you can taste in several traditional restaurants that you will find in the village.

Njegusi is situated on the slopes of Mount Lovcen and is part of Lovcen National Park, so bring your camera as the landscape is breathtaking! Keep in mind that the road to Njegusi is quite windy and if you have issues with motion sickness you should take precautions.

See the list of Njegusi village tours and activities

9. Blue Cave

Known as one of the major attractions on the coast of Montenegro, Blue Cave is a massive rock cave boasting crystal-clear deep blue water, popular for boat tours, kayaking, swimming, and snorkeling.

The sea is approximately 5 meters deep and the cave is about 9 meters high which is enough for the boats to sail in. It is allowed to swim inside the cave and snorkeling is quite enjoyable here, so make sure you bring your snorkel gear .

Blue Cave is located around 24 km/15 miles (a 35-minute drive) away from the port of Kotor on the stunning Lustica Peninsula, close to Montenegro’s border with Croatia.

To get there, you can either embark on a boat in the port of Kotor that will take you to the Blue Cave (a ride lasts around 1 hour), or you can take a bus from Kotor port to Zanjic beach where you’ll embark on one of the boats. The bus ride takes around 40 minutes.

The time spent in the cave is usually 20-30 minutes, and it can be crowded due to the large number of visitors.

10. Lipa Cave

Lipa Cave is one of the largest cave systems in Montenegro featuring approximately 2.5 km/1.5 miles of winding passages and chambers filled with impressive geological formations, ornaments, and an underground river.

It starts close to the village of Lipa and stretches into the mountains lining the Adriatic Sea. The temperature in the cave is around 10°C, so make sure to bring some warm clothes even in the summer months.

It takes an approximately 1-hour drive from the port of Kotor to Lipa Cave. If you suffer from motion sickness, I suggest you take seasickness pills before the ride as the roads are quite windy.

The cave is open from April to November, and the standard tour of the cave lasts 1 hour.

11. Porto Montenegro

Situated only a 20-minute drive from the port of Kotor, in the city of Tivat, Porto Montenegro is a new, luxurious marina filled with luxurious yachts, hotels, high-end stores, restaurants, and bars – a true paradise for luxury lovers!

The pavements in the entire marina are flat and perfect for anyone, including the ones with some walking difficulties. It’s a perfect place for a nice coffee with a view where you will get that beautiful picture of Montenegro but with a modern twist.

We have a stop at Kotor, Montenegro with our cruise coming up in October. We like to do “local” stuff, like eat or have a draft beer at a local pub. Could you recommend anything like that? Specifically a popular local spot for a beer or a local dish?

Hi there! Hmm, it’s been a while since I went to Kotor and I can’t think of any specific restaurant, but I know for sure that Balkan food is fantastic and that restaurants generally serve quality food. Meat is popular in the Balkans (look for the “cevapi” dish) but you can also try some local seafood or catch of the day. Make sure you taste “Njegusi” prosciutto, local cheese, “kajmak” and “burek”, a pastry filled with cheese, meat or plain (“yogurt” goes perfectly with burek). To top off, taste a glass of “rakija” – the local brandy generally popular in the Balkans (but beware, it normally contains a high percentage of alcohol). I hope this is helpful and I wish you a great cruise! 🙂

The urban park is a green oasis full of indigenous and exotic plants that include eucalyptuses, magnolias, Chilean firs and unusual herbs. By planting a small tree on the grounds, you will add to the botanical diversity and perhaps most important help the environment, as trees absorb harmful carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the air. A bit of free time in Porto Montenegro will follow, after which you will wander through Solila Reserve on the Bay of Tivat. Although salt was once produced in the pools along the shore, birdwatching is now the main activity in the protected wildlife reserve. Keep an eye out for auks, ibises and curlews. A leisurely and informative walk through Old Town Kotor will perfectly complement the experience.

Race through Boka Bay in a speedboat and enjoy a refreshing swim in the Blue Cave and in the sparkling waters that rim a nearby beach. Although officially known as the Bay of Kotor, Boka – as it is called locally – is considered the southernmost fjord in Europe because of its wild landscape and precipitous cliffs that plummet into the sea. Zipping along its rocky coast in a speedboat will be an exhilarating experience, especially on the approach to the Blue Cave. Expect to be awed by the brilliant blue water and the hue that it casts on the cave’s interior, both the result of the way the sunlight reflects off the sandy bottom of the sea. You will have the opportunity to swim in this enchanting setting before zipping off to Rose Beach on the tip of the Lustica Peninsula. Sheltered by the surrounding mountains and forests, the water there is typically calm.

HIGHLIGHTS • Zip through the typically calm waters of Boka Bay on a speedboat. • Swim in a seaside cave known for its brilliant blue water, which reflects on the interior. • Pause for a swim at Rose Beach, yet another idyllic spot on the bay.

Duration 4.5 hours

After departing from the pier in a sleek catamaran, you will soon be sailing across the heart of Boka Bay. The surrounding landscape is so wild and the cliffs so precipitous that the bay is often referred to as the southernmost fjord in Europe. It’s that stunningly beautiful.

In time, the ancient village of Perast will come into view. Like Kotor, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with extraordinary Venetian-style architecture and abundant Catholic churches. One of the most beautiful churches is Our Lady of the Rocks, which sits on a tiny island in the bay. As you circumnavigate the island, you can expect to hear the legend of how it was formed—supposedly by sailors who dropped rocks in the same spot every time they sailed by in honor of the image of the Virgin Mary being seen there.

Then it’s on to the exclusive Movida Beach Club, where you might stroll along the sea, take a refreshing swim in the typically calm waters and relax in a lounge chair under the shade of an umbrella. The scenery is just as impressive as the beach, and you will have plenty of time to soak it in before boarding a coach and driving back to the pier.

  • Adult from: € 183,82 EUR
  • Child from: € 137,63 EUR

kotor port tours

Between dramatic cliffs and the sparkling waters of Boka Kotorskam, you’ll find the towns of Kotor and Perast, each with a charm of their own. This amazing landscape was created 300,000 years ago by tectonic forces and is part of UNESCO’s list of protected natural sites. A short scenic drive on the inner part of the bay, full of contrasts, takes you to Perast. This easternmost shore was the earliest inhabited area in the Boka, as evidenced by archaeological finds. The town reached its peak in the 18th century under the Republic of Venice. At that time, ornate baroque palaces and magnificent houses were constructed. Walk the quaint streets of this town full of typical Venetian architecture.

Visit the cathedral of St. Nikola, a beautiful example of Venetian-Romanesque style. The two small islands in front of Perast offer an impressive view, each of them with a picturesque chapel. Sail to one of these islands, and visit the Church of Our Lady of the Rock and learn of its legend. Most of the present day church was erected after the great earthquake of 1667 when the original sanctuary was destroyed. You’ll find a collection of paintings and a beautifully embroidered tapestry made by a local lady, among its treasures. Once back in Kotor, you’ll continue on a walking tour of the town with its historical buildings and delightful streets.

Start your tour with a short walk to Kotor, which is well-preserved and surrounded by a protective wall built in the Middle Ages. Discover the Renaissance-style 18th-century Prince’s Palace and the striking Romanesque Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, one of Kotor’s largest and most revered buildings, built in 1166 to honor the patron and protector of the city. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of Kotor’s past as you explore these iconic steppingstones of Montenegrin history. Board your coach and continue along steep slopes to Nevjesta Jadrana venue with the best view of Boka Bay. This is an area of powerful contrasts. To one side towers the cold Montenegrian mountains and opposite them you will find the wealth and mildness of one of the most beautiful bays in the world. The road carries you on to 15th-century Cetinje, once the Montenegrin capital, and Kotor’s medieval fortified Old Town, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Following a route that inspired playwright George Bernard Shaw to wax poetic about its beauty, you’ll understand his enchantment as you pass majestic mountains on one side and a sparkling cerulean bay on the other. In Cetinje, the former center of Montenegrin rule, visit the neoclassical Museum of King Nikola, once a palace and seat of the Montenegrin royal family. Settle in for a captivating ride along the Budva Riviera, a resort area known for its nearly eight miles of sun-drenched beaches. You’ll journey to the Carpet shop in Grbalj plain. The invention of the rugs and kilims originated from the need to cover the bare grounds inside the tents, in order to warm it as much as possible (nothing is better than wool). The estate vineyards are devoted to different types of grapes including Vranac, a varietal synonymous with Montenegro.

Following the walking tour, you will sample a selection of wines produced on the estate while savoring a meal made entirely with organic ingredients. The exact dishes will depend on the season, but you can be sure that they will reflect Montenegro’s traditional cuisine.

Back in Kotor, you will enjoy a walking tour of the Old Town, a wonderfully atmospheric medieval quarter with narrow winding streets, lovely squares and ornate palaces. The highlight will be an interior visit of the Church of St. Nicholas, a privilege usually reserved for locals only. Be sure to look at the detailed mosaic above the entrance.

Go Local - Olive Oil Production

Enjoy an insider’s tour of the olive groves on a family estate and then visit two olive mills for a tasting of the so-called “liquid gold” from freshly pressed olives.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a spectacularly scenic drive to the Lustica peninsula, where a local family will welcome you to their estate. During a leisurely walking tour of the olive groves, you will learn how the trees are pruned and tended, the best times to harvest the olives and how the olives are pressed to produce oil. You will then walk to a nearby village to see a historical olive press and the newer olive mill that replaced it.

Historians believe that the Greeks introduced olive trees to Montenegro when they founded coastal colonies there in the 4th century BC. Olive trees can produce fruit for well over 100 years, and after a taste of freshly pressed olive oil from these ancient trees, you will understand why they are so coveted. You will also be served local delicacies that taste even more delicious when dipped in extra virgin olive oil.

KOTOR, a city of tradesmen and famous seamen. The Old Town of Kotor represents one of the best preserved medieval urban settlements built between the 12th and the 14th century. Its medieval architecture and numerous monuments ensured Kotor a place in the list of UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage Sites. Among the numerous narrow streets and town squares, Kotor is home to medieval palaces, churches, and the cathedral of St. Tryphon (Tripun), a monument of Roman culture and one of the most prominent symbols of the town.

BAJOVA KULA

In the centre of the Drazin Vrt village, there is a tower called Bajova Kula (The Tower of Bajo), named after the legendary local hero named Bajo Pivljanin, who erected the tower as a place where he would rest between numerous battles he took part in. It was built in 1670, and it represents a great cultural and historical asset. The location is still popular up to date, as a picnic and relaxation area for the local populous. Under the tower, there is a 60 meters long pebble beach with crystal-clear sea water, surrounded by laurel trees, whose pleasant scent completes the sunbathing and swimming experience. There is a restaurant and a cocktail bar at the beach.

PERAST is a marvellous little coastal town, whose architecture will swiftly take you to medieval times. Perast is one of the most peculiar and loveliest places of Boka Bay. Its narrow streets and numerous Renaissance and Baroque palaces testify of Boka and its inhabitants’ wealth and luxurious lifestyle from a time long gone. Also famous for its seamen- known captains and admirals, whose stone residences and palaces can be seen today.

WALKING TOUR

After completing the bus tour, it's time to dive deeper into the rich history and beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Lace up your walking shoes, and let's embark on a fascinating journey through time. Our walking tour inside the Old Town will take approximately 35-40 minutes, allowing us to explore the maze-like streets, hidden squares, and architectural wonders that make Kotor so enchanting. As we stroll through the narrow cobblestone lanes, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time.

kotor port tours

At the stop of Perast, you can change to a boat (fee not included) that sails to the OUR LADY OF THE ROCK ISLAND and ISLAND OF ST.GEORGE

OUR LADY OF THE ROCKS ISLAND is an artificial island, according to local folklore created on the place where local fishermen found an icon of Holy Mother holding the baby Jesus. The story tells that two brothers from Perast found the icon on the rocks after a shipwreck, and vowed to build a church dedicated to it. More rocks were freighted and dropped on this location, and a small church was built on the artificial island in 1630. Although vow fulfilled, local fishermen never stopped bringing rocks and dropping them around the island, caring for a tradition that survived up to date.

ISLAND OF ST.GEORGE or as it is also called- the island of dead captains, home to the church of St. George and numerous graves of members of prominent local families of old. A peculiar folklore tale is tied to this island- a story of an occupying French soldier, despite being in love with a local girl, still fired his cannon towards the city, killing the woman he loved. The island is also known as an inspiration for the masterpiece “Isle of the Dead” by Swiss painter Böcklin.

The scenery as you sail through the bay is stunning. You’ll see sheer mountains rising up on either side of the bay, island churches and seaside hamlets of traditional stone houses lining the shore... be sure to set your alarm so you don't miss it!

Once you get to Kotor port, there’s a range of things to see and do. You can explore the old town’s ancient alleys, take a fun boat trip, challenge yourself on a hike or head inland to experience Montenegro’s history and culture.

Can cruise ships dock in Kotor?

Yes, cruise ships can dock in Kotor and there are usually between 1 and 3 ships in port at a time.

Sometimes, large ships anchor in the bay and transport their passengers to the port by tender. Tender rides take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes and give you the opportunity to see the beautiful scenery of the bay.

How Far is the Port of Kotor from Kotor Town?

One of the best things about having a cruise stop in Kotor is how close the port of Kotor is to the city centre. The cruise port in Kotor is just 200m (650ft) from Kotor old town, which is the city centre and main attraction in Kotor, and you can walk there from your ship.

How to Get to From Kotor Cruise Port to City Centre

Getting to Kotor’s city centre couldn’t be easier from Kotor cruise port.

If your ship is docked alongside, you’ll be able to walk the 200m to the city centre. There is an underground walkway with an escalator from the port to the old town. This means you don’t have to cross the busy road between the port and the town.

If your ship is at anchor you’ll be taken by tender to the port of Kotor. From there you can walk to the old town.

Kotor is a walled city and there are three gates you can use to get into the old town: the Sea, River and Gurdić gates. The best entrance from the port of Kotor is the Sea Gate, which is on the sea side of the town and across the road from Kotor port.

Tip: Stop at the information kiosk in front of the Sea Gate to get a free map of the old town. This map will help you navigate your way through the old town’s streets. It also lists all the palaces, churches and historic buildings in the old town, although not all of these are worth seeing, nor will you have time to see them all. If you’d like to explore Kotor independently, my book, Kotor Beyond The Wall , tells you which sights are worth seeing and gives you the information you need to explore them on your own.

Local Transport

Since Kotor port is just 200m from Kotor old town and the old town is pedestrian only, you don't necessarily need transport for your visit to Kotor. However, if you want to go further afield, you can use local buses, taxis and book tours.

Local buses

There is a car park beside Kotor port (along the seaside) and there is a bus stop going at the exit of the car park. This bus goes around the bay towards Lepetane.

On the opposite side, there is a bus stop in front of a small garden on the outside of the town walls. This bus goes around the bay towards Perast.

There are taxis in front of Kotor port. These will offer you tours for a fixed price, but you can negotiate with them. Locals use the metered taxis that are found by Kamelia shopping centre (around 300m from port) and these charge around €0.80 per kilometre plus a €0.50 start. Note that taxi prices are seasonal and are usually 2-3 times more expensive in July and August.

There is no Uber in Montenegro.

What to Do in Kotor From a Cruise Ship

If you’re stopping on a cruise, you’ll have a choice of shore excursions in Kotor. You’ll usually have anywhere from a few hours to all day to spend in Kotor, and this should determine what you choose to do while you’re here.

Below, I’ve listed the main attractions that you can reasonably visit in a few hours to one day in Kotor.

If you’re looking for some sample itineraries, you’ll find several examples of ways to spend one day in Kotor here . You can also book customisable,  privately-guided tours that will introduce you to Montenegro's nature, culture and cuisine in an intimate and personal way.

And don’t forget to compare shore excursions in Kotor. Those offered on cruise ships tend to be more expensive and have much larger groups than those offered locally, however they offer more security than booking independently. For example, if you are delayed on a ship's excursion, the ship will wait for you.

If you prefer to book independently, reputable tour platforms like Get Your Guide and Viator  can save you money and ensure you have a fantastic experience too.

Kotor Old Town

Port of Kotor, Montenegro: The Complete Guide

The must-see attraction in Kotor is Kotor old town , a beautiful walled Venetian town that’s one of the best –preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean. The city of Kotor was founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago and is both beautiful and historic.

There’s an abundance of things to see in Kotor old town, like churches, museums, galleries and historic sites. The old town is a rabbit warren of pedestrian alleyways winding their way between traditional stone buildings. These alleyways open out to piazzas, open air squares filled with cafes and restaurants.

Tips for Cruise Excursions in Kotor

Wear comfortable shoes – Kotor’s streets are made with cobblestones that have been worn down and made slippery with centuries of foot traffic. You’ll probably do a lot of walking through the town, so make sure you’re wearing comfortable and practical shoes.

Bring euros – many attractions only accept cash so bring euros with you, preferably in small denominations. It’s also common to tip tour guides in cash. If you need to withdraw cash or exchange large denominations for smaller ones, you’ll find banks and atms in Weapons Square just inside the Sea Gate (main entrance into Kotor old town).

San Giovanni Fortress

Port of Kotor, Montenegro: The Complete Guide

Are you up for taking on the biggest challenge in Kotor?

San Giovanni Fortress lies on the site of the original Illyrian hill fort that was established here over 2,200 years ago.

But to get there you’ll need to scale 1355 ancient steps up Mount Saint John (San Giovanni) behind Kotor old town.

This short but steep hike takes 45-60 minutes each way, but it’s absolutely worth it for the incredible views. From the top you’ll be able to explore the old fortress and get views out over Kotor old town and the Bay of Kotor.

If you’d love to get these views, but aren’t up to this ‘huff n puff’ hike, read on to find out how you can still get these views from the serpentine road to Njeguši village.

At the top of the hike you’ll be able to refresh yourself at a little homestead that serves traditional specialties like prosciutto, cheese and pomegranate juice. You’ll also be able to explore the ruins of Špiljari, the original village that was established by the Illyrians over 2,200 years ago.

You can scale San Giovanni on your own or join a tour with a guide who will tell you about Kotor and the fortress. These are seasonal and usually only available April to November.  Click here to check availability .

San Giovanni hike: €8 per person Opening hours: 8am – 8pm daily Tips: Bring water, sunscreen, hat and wear walking shoes

Njeguši Village and Lovćen National Park

Port of Kotor, Montenegro: The Complete Guide

Njeguši Village is arguably one of the best places to experience authentic Montenegrin culture. This small village lies above Kotor and was the seat of power for the rulers of Montenegro. In the village, you can visit the birthplace of one of Montenegro’s most famous rulers, Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, which has been turned into a museum.

Njeguši is also where Montenegro’s best prosciutto is made. The main road through town is lined with stalls where you can try prosciutto, cheese, wine and rakija , a traditional brandy that’s a staple in all Montenegrin homes.

Tip: Stop at the restaurant Kod Pera na Bukoviću, the oldest restaurant in Montenegro, to try traditional Montenegrin prosciutto and cheese sandwiched between slabs of thick domaći homemade bread, washed down with a glass of vranac red wine and a shot of rakija for a real Montenegrin experience!

Lovćen National Park is the best way to see some of Montenegro’s spectacular mountain scenery, just a stone’s throw (okay, an hour’s winding drive) from Kotor. The drive from Kotor up the ‘serpentine road’ with its 25 hairpin turns to Njeguši will give you spectacular views of the Bay of Kotor.

Inside the national park, Petar II Petrović-Njegoš’ mausoleum is a must-see attraction. The mausoleum itself is a stunning monument to this beloved leader and poet. Not only that, but from the guvno (threshing circle) behind the mausoleum, you’ll get views all the way over Montenegro out to Croatia and Albania on a clear day.

Is There a Ferry From Dubrovnik to Kotor?

No, there is no ferry from Dubrovnik to Kotor.

Dubrovnik lies in Croatia, while Kotor lies in Montenegro, meaning there is an international border crossing between Dubrovnik and Kotor . While this isn’t a barrier to having a ferry between these two beautiful cities, unfortunately there isn’t a ferry at the moment.

We live in hope!

Virgin Voyages' guide to Kotor, Montenegro

Where Europe’s southernmost fjord enters the east.

A river canyon’s medieval maze

While Kotor’s history is steeped in medieval lore, its past extends all the way back to both ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Like the age of a vintage Hollywood starlet, an exact date to the city’s origins is impossible to pinpoint, but with the 12th-14th centuries being widely accepted as the golden age of Montenegro’s development, this is probably a good starting place to fix your mind upon entering the city’s renowned gates.

Shore Excursions

Rugged beauty to refined luster

Morning sailing — our lady of the rocks.

In the morning, explore Montenegro's rugged shoreline and charming coastal villages on a catamaran. Sail over to one of Kotor's greatest highlights, Our Lady of the Rocks, the tiny islet said to be built around a rock where an image of the Madonna was found in 1452 — locals pay tribute every year by bringing over a stone. With sweeping views of this historical gem, you'll sail into a secluded bay where the boat will drop anchor for you to take a dip in the Adriatic sea.

Lovcen Hills ATV Safari

Feel the thrills of driving an ATV on a one-of-a-kind adventure through Montenegro's wooded valleys and remote areas, starting at the bottom of Lovcen National Park. Drive on steep asphalt streets, take it off-road, zoom along the coast, and ride over the rugged hills on a scenic trail that reaches 1,380 feet above sea level. At the end of the ride, it will be hard to tell what took your breath away — the epic views over Kotor or the hairpin turns along the way.

Underground Hanger Wine Experience

Visiting the Šipčanik Wine Cellar is a must for any wine lover and history buff. Set in a secret Yugoslav-era underground aircraft hangar partially destroyed by a NATO bombing in 1999, the revamped hangar is now a majestic, 75,347 ft2 wine cellar operated by Plantaže where two million liters of wine are left to age. See the largest single vineyard in Europe from above before going 98 ft underground for a one-of-a-kind, expert-led wine tasting experience and divine lunch.

WHATSINPORT.COM: YOUR CRUISE GUIDE TO 1200 PORTS OF CALL

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, kotor montenegro cruise port guide.

Sailing in is one of the highlights of this cruise stop: Spectacular! The more than an hour sail-in is like a trip on the Rhine and a cruise to Geiranger fjord combined...truly a highlight!

The Gulf of Kotor, one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea, is sometimes called the southern-most fjord in Europe, although it is in fact a submerged river canyon.

As you proceed through the bay, the captain will blow the ship’s horn, resulting in an unbelievable echo which lasts for almost fifteen seconds.

Cruise ships docks at Kotor pier about 300 feet from the town center and one of the three gates to enter the UNESCO old town. Taxis are generally available at the pier, but be sure to negotiate the price prior to leaving.

if more than one ship in port, other ships will be anchored and will tender you to the center of town. The tender ride takes anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes depending on the size of your ship and will drop you off at the above pier.

Sightseeing:

Montenegro is a country with deep blue sea, crystal clear rivers, mountains that reach the sky, dense forests, and beautiful lakes. It is bordered on the southeast by Albania. On the south, it is separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea. Its western neighbors are the former Yugoslav republics of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The old town of Kotor is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in this area of the Mediterranean. It has succeeded in maintaining its original form, typical of towns from the 12th-14th centuries. The only car in the old walled section is a replica of a small Fiat Cinquecento with a mini-trailer, used to collect the trash. The narrow streets and squares, along with numerous medieval monuments, helped earn Kotor a place on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

The bay is the deepest natural fjord in the Mediterranean Sea, and the scenery around it (including the steep mountains which come almost to the waterfront) is spectacular.

The Fort : It is quite a hike but for those who love to hike it is great.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Kotor itself is a small town, so pretty much everything is within walking distance. Enter the old town via any of the three gates then explore the maze of narrow passages between the houses.

There is a hop on/off tour which goes from Kotor to Bajova kula , Perast, and Risan and includes a Kotor walking tour. (25 Euro)

Consider an excursion around Montenegro. A taxi will cost about 60 euro per hour. Make sure the driver speaks some english.

Due to the many "fjord" type roads renting a car here is not recommended.

If you are up to it: there is a winding path up the mountain behind Kotor’s old town. It’s an ancient stone pathway consisting of over 1,500 steps that take you to an old fortress at the top. At every twist and turn, there is a view more spectacular than the one before of the bay and old town below. Wear good shoes! It costs 3 euros per person to access the walk to the fort.

The Church of Our Lady of Remedy which you reach after maybe 400-500 stairs is equally beautiful and is less of an hike!

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Shopping and food.

Shopping in Kotor offers endless possibilities. The Old Town shopping area is within walking distance of the pier with stores and souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants. Some shops close for the obligatory lunchtime between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Tourist-oriented shops usually stay open throughout the day.

There is an open market just outside the old town, there you can buy almost anything from fresh vegetables to sunglasses.

The local currency is the euro. Montenegro however is not part of Euro Zone, in fact not even part of the EU. Smart thinking of the government!

Communication:

Official languages Montenegrin Serbian, Bosnian, Albanian and Croatian.

Free WiFi is available at many cafe's and the prices of drinks are very reasonable to boot and the squares they occupy are one of the nicest you will ever see.
