The King and I announces new UK tour dates with Helen George

The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic is heading to Eastbourne and Salford

New dates have been added to the current touring production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s  The King and I .

As previously announced , the hit Lincoln Center Theater production, directed by Bartlett Sher, is heading back to London’s West End, running at the Dominion Theatre from 20 January to 2 March 2024.

Newly announced tour stops include Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre (13 to 23 December 2023) and the Lowry in Salford (9 to 13 January 2024).

Reprising her role as Anna Leonowens for the new dates will be Helen George ( Call the Midwife ), who will reunite with Darren Lee as The King of Siam.

George said: “I am so delighted to continue to play the formidable Anna Leonowens in this incredible production of The King and I . I am thrilled to bring the show to Eastbourne and Salford ahead of the West End season. I think it so important to bring big lavish West End productions to the regions – Salford and Eastbourne are in for a real treat!”

The musical tells the story of Anna, a widowed British schoolteacher who is hired by the King of Siam to help modernize his country. It features some of the finest songs ever written, including classic tunes like “Getting to Know You,” “Whistle a Happy Tune”, and “Shall We Dance.”

The King and I  features book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and music by Richard Rodgers, with sets by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Catherine Zuber, and orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett. The musical supervision is by Stephen Ridley, and the casting direction is by James Orange.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I will launch a new UK and international tour in 2023.

WhatsOnStage reports:

The acclaimed Lincoln Center Theater production , which premiered on Broadway in 2015 and picked up a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, previously enjoyed a successful run at the London Palladium and an international tour.

The new production will launch at Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre on 30 January 2023, before heading to Wimbledon, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wycombe, Bristol, Dartford, Bradford, Southend, Cardiff, Manchester and Glasgow. Additional venues, as well as casting, will be announced in due course.

Producer Howard Panter commented: “This really is musical theatre at its very best, so we are thrilled that we can now share this wondrous production with theatre lovers up and down the country next year.”

Cast & Creative

Marin Mazzie is best known for her Tony-nominated performances as Clara in Passion , Mother in Ragtime and Lilli Vanessi/Katharine in Kiss Me, Kate . She made her Broadway debut as replacement in Big River before going on to star in the Broadway productions of Man of La Mancha , Enron , Into the Woods,   Spamalot, Bullets Over Broadway  and The King and I . She also starred in Next to Normal alongside her husband Jason Danieley, with whom she regularly performed with in concert in New York City.  In 2012, Mazzie played the title character's mom in the off-Broadway re-mounting of the legendary musical Carrie . Her other off-Broadway work included roles in  And the World Goes 'Round ,  The Vagina Monologues  and her final New York stage turn, Terrence McNally's  Fire and Air  (2018). She was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2017 before passing away form ovarian cancer in September of 2018.

Daniel Dae Kim is an actor, director, producer, and social advocate widely known for his work in ABC’s Lost , CBS’s Hawaii Five-O , Netflix’s Stowaway , and Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon . Though his career is highlighted by work in every medium, it’s the stage that has kept him busy of late. He just returned from London’s West End, where he performed in My Favorite Things: The Rodgers and Hammerstein Anniversary Concert , with Audra McDonald, Patrick Wilson, Aaron Tveit and other theater luminaries. Earlier this fall, he also joined the cast of the critically acclaimed Peter Pan Goes Wrong for a limited engagement at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles. He also just completed an audio version of David Henry Hwang’s play Yellowface for Audible that his production company, 3AD, produced, and in which he starred. Daniel made his Broadway debut in 2017 as the King of Siam in Lincoln Center’s 2017 production of The King and I , having also played the role at the Royal Abert Hall in London in 2009. Over the course of his theater career, he has worked with New Yorks Public Theater, Theater For A New Audience, East West Players (where he performed in Golden Child written by David Henry Hwang), Pan Asian Rep, NAATCO, among others. New York is also where Daniel received his training, earning his MFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. On screen, this February, Kim will star as the villainous Fire Lord Ozai in the live-action adaptation of A vatar: The Last Airbender , for Netflix. Also in 2024, Daniel will head to South Korea to star in a new spy series that he and his company will produce for Amazon Studios. Currently, Kim can be seen on streaming platforms in BJ Novak’s FX series, The Premise , Nat Geo’s The Hot Zone: Anthrax , and Apple TV+’s Roar . As a producer, Kim and 3AD executive produce the series T he Good Doctor , currently shooting its seventh season on ABC, as well as 2023’s multi-award-winning documentary feature film, Bad Axe .  Kim’s advocacy for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is longstanding. His testimony in front of Congress helped lead to the passage of the “Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act,” and he currently serves on the White House Commission for Asian American, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. He also serves on the Board of Gold House, with whom he partners, along with the Asian American Foundation, on the Sunrise Collective, the first ever official AAPI centered House at the Sundance Film Festival.

NY City Center and the Broadway transfer);  Sondheim On Sondheim  (the Boston Pops);  Sondheim On Sondheim  (the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl); concerts with the San Francisco Symphony and the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra (Seoul, Korea). She’s the OG Imelda Marcos in Alex Timber's  Here Lies Love , written by David Byrne w/DJ Fat Boy Slim (Lucille Lortel and Theatre World Awards, The Public Theater.) She also played Adolfo Pirelli in  Sweeney Todd  (playing onstage accordion, flute and piano.)  On television Ruthie is best known as Sherri Kansky on WB’s All Rise (CBS and OWN), or Young Hee in The Americans (Emmy nomination, FX). You can hear her voice in  Over The Moon  (Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination, Netflix);  The Tea Girl Of Hummingbird Lane  (Audie Award finalist, Simon Schuster);  If I Had Your Face  (Penguin). The King and I announces new UK tour dates for 2023

The King and I has announced a new UK tour in 2023.

Fresh from runs in Broadway and the West End, the Lincoln Center Theater production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical will begin new tour dates in January 2023.

The newly announced dates will start in Canterbury and then visit Wimbledon, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wycombe, Bristol, Dartford, Bradford, Southend, Cardiff, Manchester and Glasgow.

Casting will be announced later this year with further UK cities as well as a major international tour also to be announced.

The tour follows the cinema release of the live production of The King and I from the London Palladium in 2018 which was seen by more than 135,000 in cinemas across the world.

Acclaimed Tony Award-winning Bartlett Sher will once again direct the production and be reunited with the celebrated creative team that brought this majestic production of The King And I to life at the London Palladium.

Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

The King and I

The multi award-winning Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I returns to the UK, following its critically-acclaimed sold out season at The London Palladium.

Helen George, best known as Trixie in the hit BBC One series Call The Midwife , will star as Anna, the role will be shared with Maria Coyne at certain performances. The King and I is the greatest musical from the golden age of musicals – with one of the finest scores ever written including Whistle a Happy Tune and Shall We Dance.

This gloriously lavish production is brought to the stage by an internationally renowned creative team under Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher ( South Pacific / My Fair Lady / To Kill a Mockingbird ) and will feature a world-class company of over 50 West End and Broadway performers and a full-scale orchestra.

Helen George will be playing the role of Anna on Friday 15 December, Saturday 16 December, Tuesday 19 December and Wednesday 20 December at all other performances the role will be played by Maria Coyne (please be aware the producer cannot guarantee the appearance of any named artist).

President Biden departs Seattle after attending fundraising events

SEATTLE — President Joseph Biden flew into Seattle on Friday after a two-day visit to San Francisco, where he participated in two campaign receptions in the Bay Area.

The White House confirmed that Biden participated in campaign receptions in the Seattle area on Friday and Saturday.

He left Seattle for Delaware on Saturday afternoon.

Update - 2 p.m. Saturday

President Joe Biden has taken off from SeaTac airport on Air Force One due for Delaware.

SB I-405 from Bellevue to Tukwila & WB SR 518 to SEA Airport have reopened as President Biden arrives at SeaTac airport to head to Delaware.

WSDOT posted that Eastbound SR 520 from 92nd Ave NE to I-405 is closed.

SB I-405 from SR 520 to Tukwila and Westbound SR 518 to SEA Airport are also closed.

This includes all on and off-ramps along this route. There is no estimated time for reopening. Use alternate routes and expect heavy congestion.

WSDOT posted that the NB I-5 from Downtown Seattle to SR 520 is fully closed including all on and off-ramps.

The protesters outside the Lotte Hotel left the area.

Protesters have taken to the streets outside the Lotte Hotel, where Biden and his motorcade arrived about 20 minutes ago. The pro-Palestine group is chanting and banging drums at 5th Avenue and Columbia.

President Biden and his entourage arrived at the Lotte Hotel on 5th Avenue, flanked by Seattle police and Secret Service. All lanes and ramps previously closed along SR 518 and northbound I-5 have reopened, per WSDOT.

Air Force One has touched down at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Biden exited the plane and met with and took pictures with several Washington State and Seattle leaders before getting into a limousine.

Seattle and Washington State leaders have appeared on the tarmac, expected to meet with President Biden on his arrival, including Gov. Jay Inslee, Trudi Inslee, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Suzan DelBene, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Joanne Harrell, King County Executive Dow Constantine and his daughter Sabrina, and Port of Seattle Commission Vice President Toshiko Grace Hasegawa.

President Biden and Air Force One have crossed the Columbia River and into Washington State.

Traffic is expected throughout the Seattle area as Biden makes his way from Sea-Tac into the city. The Washington State Patrol, Seattle Police Department and Washington State Department of Transportation have been spotted throughout town.

The Seattle Police Department has also blocked travel near the Lotte Hotel on 5th Avenue in Seattle.

It is currently unknown how Biden will make his way to Seattle, but northbound travelers on Interstate 5 heading to Friday nights Mariners game should plan for a slowdown.

President Biden left San Francisco on Air Force One at about 3:15 p.m., on his way to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Biden left San Francisco nearly an hour earlier than scheduled, making his approximate time to land in Seattle around 5 p.m.

The President is expected to stay in Downtown Seattle, and traffic is expected to be extremely congested during his visit.

There will likely be intermittent closures of freeways and streets, affecting the flow of buses and cars in both Downtown Seattle and around the region, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation.

“While the President’s exact travel route and timing are not published in advance, travelers can still plan ahead by anticipating delays and temporary road closures,” SDOT said in a blog post .

SDOT said its engineers can adjust the timing of traffic signals within Seattle based on expected closures and any needed re-routing.

To complicate matters, there’s a Mariners game at 6:40 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at T-Mobile Park as well as a 7 p.m. concert at Climate Pledge Arena on Friday. In addition, the State Route 520 Bridge will be closed this weekend, along with I-5 lane reductions. You can find that information here.

One way you can keep tabs on potential traffic concerns is to sign up for King County Metro Transit alerts and watch for X posts from King County Metro , SDOT Traffic , and WSDOT Traffic .

A representative for King County also confirmed Biden would be flying in to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and not Boeing Field, so drivers should expect delays from SeaTac to Downtown Seattle.

Those taking flights from Sea-Tac around the time of Biden’s arrival and departure will also be affected.

Alaska Airlines sent a statement to KIRO 7 News about Biden’s visit:

“Air Force One is scheduled to arrive at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Friday. Security protocol requires all air traffic at SEA to stop at least 30 minutes before the arrival of the presidential aircraft. All airlines could experience potential delays during this time including Alaska and Horizon flights. Additional flight impacts could also happen when Air Force One departs on Saturday. We appreciate the understanding and patience of our guests during these high-security events.”

A representative for the Seattle Police Department said:

“We have been working with our federal, state, county, and local partners to coordinate the public safety response to the visit. Though we can’t speak to specific allocation of resources, SPD will be providing additional staffing during the visit.”

President Biden was last in Seattle in April 2022, as part of a trip to Seattle and Portland, marking Earth Day.

The 2024 King and Queen of the Ring tournaments are underway in WWE with action taking place on Raw and SmackDown leading up to the final that will take place at the premium live event in Saudi Arabia later this month. In total, 32 stars across the roster will compete for the opportunity to wear the crown and claim the title that some of the most decorated wrestlers have claimed before. First round action is nearly complete, and the quarterfinals of the tournament will take place this week.
