How To Fix Safari Videos Black Screen Bug (iOS 15 & iPadOS 15)

Last updated on May 10th, 2022 at 09:00 am

Safari video black screen bug

Safari video black screen bug

Safari Video Black Screen Reports

This video not playing issue was reported to us by iPhoneTricks.org readers Bernaldo for iOS 15:

“I have an iPhone SE 2020. My problem is I can only listen to the sounds of a video in Safari. The video stays black and only the sound can be heard.”

and James complained about similar behavior in iPadOS 15:

“there’s new issue, video playback on chrome and safari doesn’t load properly on websites”

Safari Video Not Working Causes

We’ve managed to replicate this bug and have noticed that it only gets triggered when web pages with embedded videos are loaded in their AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) version.

Apparently, iOS 15 comes with a glitch that prevents Safari and other browsers from correctly playing videos embedded in AMP web pages!

How To Fix Safari Video Bug In iOS 15

Until Apple issues an iOS 15.x software update, with a patch for this problem, I recommend you to apply the following troubleshooting methods:

1. Disable GPU Process: Media

how to fix safari video black screen bug

  • Open Settings and browse for Safari .
  • Scroll all the way down to Advanced .
  • Go for Experimental Features .
  • Disable GPU Process: Media !

Fact: Does this fix work for you too? If not, try the other workarounds described below!

(Update, May 10)

2. Disable AdBlockers

Since iOS 15.4 Apple has removed the GPU Process: Media option from the Safari – Experimental Features menu. This means that the above fix isn’t available anymore!

how to disable content blockers on iPhone

  • Open Settings and scroll for Safari .
  • Go for Extensions .
  • Disable any active Content Blockers . (like Adblock Plus, Firefox Focus or anything similar)
  • Reboot iPhone and check if the Safari video black screen issue has been solved. Share your results in the comments section please!

3. Load Non-AMP Web Page Version

non-amp version link in website footer

  • Open Safari and load the web page that contains the video that you want to watch. Fact: If you access it via an Googe Search engine results page, most likely your iPhone or iPad will load the page’s AMP version.
  • If the embedded video won’t play, or better said displays a black screen for the entire duration of the clip, scroll all the way down to the footer of the page.
  • Tap on the View Non-Amp Version link available in the footer. The standard version of the web page will load and the video playback should work without any problems!

Second AMP Workaround

amp url pasted in Notes

  • Long-press the Safari bottom tab bar to select and copy the page’s URL .
  • Open Notes or any other text editing app.
  • Paste the URL and delete the ‘amp’ part from the string.
  • Copy the edited URL back to the clipboard.
  • Return to Safari and paste it in a new tab. The regular web page version should allow you to play the embedded video without any hiccups!

Fix Safari Video Black Screen On Mac

The same issue has been reported on Macs running macOS Monterey. CeeYon confirms that the fix provided by Ajiaz works in macOS 12 too:

The problem is not only AMP, it happens ever on iPad, it’s a big fail without solution

Thanks for your feedback Max. I could only replicate it in case of AMP web pages. When the web page loads normally, the videos play without a problem at my end. Can you provide more details, perhaps an example about how videos fail at your end?

Hi, turning settings>safari>advanced>GPU media=off worked for me on the ipad (6th gen), Thanks for your help as the bug was really annoying me!

You’re welcome. Glad we could help!

Nothing works idk how everyone says that method works I unchecked it and the videos still are black

Yes! It did fix it! Thanks!

Thanks for confirming.

None of these solutions work, no button that says amp version and copy and pasting it does nothing at all. This is ridiculous from apples behalf.

Tom, do you get ‘amp’ in the web page’s URL, if you tap the address bar? For example: https://www.iphonetricks.org/how-to-fix-safari-videos-black-screen-bug/ amp/ is an URL of the AMP version of the website. You can manually delete the ‘amp’ and browse for: https://www.iphonetricks.org/how-to-fix-safari-videos-black-screen-bug/ to load the non-AMP version, if the website in question doesn’t provide the ‘non-AMP version’ option.

Guys Just do this for ios 15 :

Open Setting > Safari > Advanced > Experimental Features > Turn off (GPU Process : media)

Works on My iPhone like a magic try it.

I can confirm this works! Thanks a bunch for your contribution Ajiaz! :Applause:

P.S.: Added your fix to the main content of the article for better exposure!

It works for me too. Thank you!

Thanks for confirming!

This also worked in macOS Monterey (Safari -> Develop -> Experimental Features -> GPU Process Media

Thanks for confirming. Glad it helped.

Just tried Aijaz’s solution to turn off GPU process on media and it worked on my iPhone 7 with iOS 15!

It does indeed. Thanks for the confirmation!

Did not work on my new iPad and iPhone 12

That’s strange. Have you tried to reboot iPhone after changing the setting GPU setting?

The GPU process media is not even an option on my iPhone 7. None of these tips worked. If anyone has further tips, I’m happy for them.

Same to me , it was change after the update 15 , then when you uncheck it it wont work

i can’t find “GPU process on media ” i my iphone 7 with OS 15

Hi Ali, yes this option has been removed from the ‘Experimetal Features’ since the iOS 15.4 update. We’re looking for an alternate fix and will update it in the article as soon as available.

I had the same problem with Safari Web Browser on my iMac. Amazon product videos just had black screen with sound. The solution worked. You have to enable developer tools under preferences > advanced. Then under Develop > Experimental Features, disable GPU-Media. The entry should be unchecked. Product videos play normally now.

Thanks for letting us know how to fix this similar issue in macOS! I appreciate your contribution!

What do you do if the GPU Media option is greyed out and cannot be chosen. Any thoughts? Thanks!

That’s strange. Is it greyed out in On or Off position?

Not only AMP but also pages that are added to the Home Screen. The GPU Process toggle fixed it! Thanks!

Thanks for confirming. Glad it helped!

Does this work for chrome as well?

Are you facing this bug on Chrome too? There is no GPU Process: Media option in Chrome settings.

Yes I See this Problem On Chrome Please Solve this

A fix should be on its way. In fact, some early claims mention about the fix coming in iOS 15.1 Beta 3 which was just released!

That recommended setting change doesn’t fix course videos not playing on Udemy.com.

Are the videos playing from that website on an other device? You sure that it isn’t a website related problem?

Thank you sooooooooooo muchhhhh the disabling one worked perfectly

You’re welcome Sasha! Glad we could help!

Thank you so so so so so so much 😊

You’re welcome! Glad that we could help.

Wow thank you so much it was working. Great job

I experienced the same issue and what did the trick for me and it might be a lazy fix but I simply opened Safari settings went to advanced – experimental features and disable everything and surely enough it started working as usual

Thanks for confirming Paris. For us, disabling the GPU Process: Media was enough.

Disabling the gpu process worked!

Thanks for confirming. Glad we could help.

For me the issue has nothing to do with amp versions, but the safari fix does work. Problem is still in chrome though. Was hoping for a fix in 15.0.1 or 15.0.2 but it’s just the same

Thanks for the feedback Ursa202. iOS 15.1 will be out next week. Let’s hope that it will address it. Or, we might need Google to update Chrome to reflect some changes introduced in iOS 15, that are causing this issue.

The method worked! Thank you! I’ve been struggling with this problem since the new update. I appreciate it!

You’re welcome! Glad that we could help!

Any solution for crome? For me its still not working on IOS 15.1

Are you running the latest Chrome version from the App Store?

The trick Settings > Safari > Advance … works for me! But I have the same problem with any app on IOS 15 (Google Chrome and non-search web apps with embed YouTube videos (like Cake)). Now I can only see videos on Safari :/ anyone else?

Thanks for the feedback Dave. What iPhone model are you owning? I just tried the Cake app on iPhone 13 Pro running iOS 15.1 and the YouTube videos play without problems. Have you tried to offload the app and reinstall it?

You can mention other apps too, and I will try them out.

Had this problem for months… tried the one with disabling the gpu thing and it works 🥺

Glad it helped Adejah. Thanks for confirming.

It worked. All I had to do was Disable GPU Media. Thanks!

You’re welcome. Glad that it helped.

Turning off gpu worked for me. Thank you ❤️🙏🏼 Plz provide tips to fix it on chrome also.

You’re welcome! Glad we could help out. Could not find a fix yet for Chrome. We’re still searching for one.

It works, thank you. I’ve been looking for the solution to this problem for hours thankyouuu.

You’re welcome! Glad it did! Always happy to help!

Is there a fix for other browsers like DuckDuckGo ?

Not one that we are aware of. I am looking into this and will update this reply if I have any news.

let me know aswell, the GPU trick worked on safari. However, Chrome and DuckDuckgo are still showing blackscreen.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a setting available in the iOS version of Chrome or DuckDuckgo to disable GPU.

On Mac you can disable Google Chrome hardware acceleration as follows:

  • Click the three vertical dots available in the top-right corner.
  • Open Settings (also works with cmd + , keyboard shortcut) and click on Advanced .
  • Go for System and turn OFF use hardware acceleration when available!

Does this help?

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaank you 😂

problem has solved for all browsers with IOS 15.2 UPDATE

Great! Thanks for confirming!

Thanks you are the best 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 It worked like magic 🥰

Happy to help. Glad that it worked out!

It fixed the issue on my 7 plus. Thank you

Any solution for crome? For me its still not working on IOS 15.3 I have IPhone 7 plus

Same for me, still not working on Chrome, iPhone 7 with IOS 15.3, maybe is time for me to upgrade… :(

It doesn’t work in Safari anymore either since iOS 15.4. We’re looking for alternatives.

GPU Process: Media disabling fix only works on Safari. For other browsers with iphone 7 and iOS 15.3 it still doesn’t work. Please guide.

It doesn’t even work on safari

Yes, the GPU Media option has been removed from Safari since iOS 15.4. We’re currently searching for an alternate fix.

We’re looking for a solution but there’s nothing available at the moment.

Does anyone know why GPU media is interferring with video players ? We are also facing this in 15.2.1 version. Is it fixed in latest version 15.3.1 ?

Yes, but the fix is not available anymore since iOS 15.4.

It Totally Worked, Thanks A Lot !

The same issue occurred with the new version of ios, the 15.4 version. It doesn’t have the option as the previous troubleshooting.

Yes, GPU Process: Media option has been removed since iOS 15.4. We’re currently looking for an alternate fix and will update it into the main content of the article as soon as it becomes available.

First solution fixed the problem for me, thanks!

The solution worked with ios15.3 on i7. I’ve now updated to IOS 15.4 , the issue has returned but the last fix is not available.

delete if u are using an adblocker app and restart ur iphone

this problem might be due about using an adblocker app – especially Firefox Focus – delete it and restart your phone . error should be fixed after deleting adblocker app. i fixed it with this way.

GPU process: media it’s not an option anymore. What now? Help

yes, if i m not wrong. for ios 15.4 , there is not any like” Gpu Process media”.

any option*

What would be the solution for the black screen, on 15.4?

Thanks for your contribution.

Why now there is no ” GPU Process: Media” , and what should i do?

The option has been removed from Experimental Features since iOS 15.4. We’re looking for an alternate fix and will update it here in the main content of the article.

I have Iphone 7 and this option is not even there to disable.

Kindly someone let me know how to get this issue fixed.. It is very annoying and frustrating..

Yes, option has been removed since iOS 15.4. Are you using an adblocker on your iPhone? You might need to disable it.

Yes, it doesn’t anymore. It has been remove since iOS 15.4. We’re looking for an alternate fix at the moment and will update it in the main article as soon as available!

Disabling Gpu:media worked for me…

Until new iOS update that revived the problem , clap clap. Only this time there is no GPU: media option to disable anymore! I.e no solution…

Is Apple doing this on purpose?

Thanks for the feedback. Indeed, the GPU Proceess Media has been removed from the Experimental Features since iOS 15.4. Are you using an adblocker on your iPhone?

Disabling ad blocker doesn’t work too

Thanks for the feedback Alex. Not sure what the cause for this is as it seems that it happens only for some devices/users. I tested it again on iPhone 13 Pro and I can’t replicate the black screen issue in Safari.

Same as earlier comments, the gpu media option is no longer available to toggle. Black screen on streaming videos persist.

Same here, black screen on streaming videos, sound audible, no gpu media option. Iphone 7 ios 15.5 Have tried different browsers safari, chrome, DuckDuckGo & TOR.

TOR does stream videos normally, but not my favorite browser.

Thanks for the feedback Dimitri. Not sure what else to suggest at the moment. Let us know if you have a breakthrough.

A lot of people prefer using Safari for watching videos because the browser’s default player often offers better video quality than some dedicated streaming apps. However, many people also say that sometimes Safari won’t play videos on the iPhone. Sometimes the video won’t play, sometimes it’s just a black screen, and sometimes the whole app crashes.

Regardless of the nature of the problem, we’ll try to deal with Safari’s video playback issues in this article.

In this article:

Safari not playing videos on iPhone

If Safari won’t play videos on your iPhone, try some of the following solutions:

Disable GPU Process: DOM Rendering

Check your internet connection, clear history and website data.

Disabling the GPU Process: Media experimental feature used to be one of the most common solutions for video playback issues in Safari on iPhone. However, Apple decided to remove this experimental feature with iOS 15. Since we don’t have an official statement from Apple, the reason for this decision is still unknown.

With GPU Process: Media now absent, we’ll have to find an alternative solution. I found a forum post saying that disabling another experimental feature, GPU Process: DOM Rendering can also help with video playback problems in Safari. However, there’s not enough positive feedback to confirm that disabling this feature will solve the problem for you. Nevertheless, you can try disabling GPU Process: DOM Rendering to check if it solves the problem for you.

Here’s how to disable GPU Process: DOM Rendering on iPhone:

  • Go to Settings .
  • Scroll down and tap Safari .

  • Find the option GPU Process: DOM Rendering , and turn it off.

Poor internet connection might also be the reason why the Safari browser won’t play videos on your iPhone. So, make sure you’re properly connected to a Wi-Fi network or that you have enough data in your data plan.

If you notice there’s anything wrong with your internet connection, check out this article for additional solutions .

Most of the time, iOS updates introduce new features and improve the overall stability and security of the system. However, some updates can cause all sorts of problems. People have reported before that they couldn’t play videos in Safari after installing the latest iOS update. So, it’s possible that Safari won’t play videos on your iPhone due to a bug that’s inside the freshes iOS release.

If that’s indeed the case, there’s probably not much you can do, except wait for Apple to deliver a fix with some of the future iOS updates. Unless you manage to find a fix that’s exclusive to that very update. So, browse the internet, and maybe you’ll find a solution.

To check for new iOS updates, head over to Settings  >  General  >  Software Update . If the new update is available, install it and check if the problem still occurs.

And finally, if you’re still unable to play videos in Safari on your iPhone, you can try clearing history and accumulated website data . However, keep in mind that doing so will practically reset Safari, as it will delete all your saved passwords and other website data, so you’ll have to log in to all the websites again .

But if you’re willing to take the risk, here’s how to clear Safari’s history and website data:

safari wont play videos ios

  • Tap Clear History and Website Data and confirm.

That’s about it. I hope at least one of these solutions helped you resolve the problems with video playback in Safari on your iPhone. If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, feel free to let us know in the comments below.

Exceptional, best vintage emulator on the App Store!

It’s really cool to think how far we have came in terms of gaming in the last 20 years. 7 systems seamlessly on 1 device is just… amazing. This application brings so much joy to me, playing my childhood DS games. I ended up losing all of my childhood games on a flight when i was about 12 years old, and since then had been wanting to play the games again. I ended up loading all the games that I had lost into my library on the application 🥹 There are no bugs and the AirPlay integration is so cool, it just has a bit of an input delay. One thing I wish was changed: when AirPlay is being used with a controller on DS games, the “lower-half” of the DS screen is not displayed, which is quite annoying. I think the expected behavior should be to have the “top-half” screen shared to the AirPlay device, while the “bottom-half” touch sensitive screen is present on the phone, so it is still able to be used. Regardless, this app is the best thing to hit the app store and to hit the gaming industry in a really long time, and I’m excited to see how much further the developers can go with it in terms of devices and functionality. I will happily make a Patreon donation to promote the development of this application. :)

Exceptional Emulator with a Slick Interface – Delta!

//1. I've been using the Delta emulator on my device, and I must say, it's an absolute joy. The interface is clean and uncluttered, which makes navigating through settings and games an effortless experience. //2. There are no annoying ads to disrupt the gaming session, and the smooth operation enhances every aspect of gameplay. The convenience of the emulator is top-notch, thanks to its intuitive controls and compatibility with a wide range of game formats. It brings back all those nostalgic moments flawlessly, running classics without a hitch. //3. However, there's one feature that would make Delta even better — expanded cloud sync options. Currently, it supports Google Drive and Dropbox, which works well but integrating iCloud sync would be a game-changer for iOS users. This addition would streamline game data management across all Apple devices, making it much more accessible and secure. //4. In conclusion, Delta is a superb emulator that offers a premium nostalgic gaming experience. If iCloud support were added, it would undoubtedly be the perfect package. Highly recommended for anyone looking to relive their favorite gaming memories on the go!

Thank you devs!

When I saw that purple delta symbol in the AppStore again, I thought it was too good to be true. I had the predecessor [GBA4ios]when i was in HS. So of course I downloaded this version. I had some ROMs from my previous attempts at other emulators, but this blew my mind. Delta emulator runs smoothly, is aesthetically pleasing, and is quite easy to navigate. It also runs in an optional fast forward mode that can honestly be too fast at times, no complaints here though. Also, integration of cheats and other mods should be used with discretion, because they might damper your experience with the game. However, that fault isn’t to be left with the emulator, that’s all on you. Lastly, be sure to save your data often (in game & on emulator), because it’s easy to forget that you’re not playing a game that is already on the App Store on its own & auto saving constantly, you’re on your mobile device. Therefore you need to save data yourself, to ensure no loss of gameplay. Otherwise, this emulator can & will change how you spend your free time. It is absolutely the best thing that I’ve come across!

Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari browser alongside new operating systems

Marko Zivkovic's Avatar

Safari getting new AI tools in iOS 18

ios safari not playing video

The software — expected to debut as Safari 18 later in 2024 — is currently undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of Apple's next-generation operating system updates, namely iOS 18 and macOS 15, according to people familiar with the matter. Should all of the new features make it to the release candidate stage, users will be treated to a new user interface (UI) for customizing popular page controls, a "Web eraser" feature, and AI-driven content summarization tools.

Intelligent Search - AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization

Engineers evaluating the latest builds of Safari 18 can find a toggle for the new page controls menu within the browser's address bar. The menu consolidates — and provides quick access to — old and new page control tools, among them being the browser's new "Intelligent Search" feature.

A screenshot of Arc Search on iPhone with a summary of an article from AppleInsider

This feature is not automatically enabled in test builds of Safari 18 and instead requires manual activation from the page controls menu. Once enabled, it's believed the tool leverages Apple's on-device AI technology — specifically the Ajax language-learning model — to identify topics and key phrases within a webpage for which to base the summarization.

In selecting key phrases, Apple's LLM software identifies sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text in question. Words repeated within a text and key sentences are recognized as text topics.

These early indications suggest Apple is striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year, though the exact implementation of this feature remains fuzzy.

Apple's text summarization features could be a response to rival generative AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. But Apple's on-device models and technologies like Private Relay could make the experience much more secure for users. Intelligent Search is also likely to be the same AI browser assistant that one X user hinted at a couple of weeks back.

Web Eraser for better content-blocking

Also accessible from the new page controls menu is a feature Apple is testing called "Web Eraser." As its name would imply, it's designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages, according to people familiar with the feature.

The feature is expected to build upon existing privacy features within Safari and will allow users to erase unwanted content from any webpage of their choosing. Users will have the option to erase banner ads, images, text or even entire page sections, all with relative ease.

A screenshot of 1Blocker's element blocking feature that removes selected parts of a webpage

The erasure is said to be persistent, rather than limited to a browsing session. This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

As for where Apple got the inspiration for Web Eraser, the company could have Sherlocked the feature from the third-party app 1Blocker. The application features a similar way of erasing ads, where users would tap ads to make them disappear.

Updated UI will move key tools into one easy location

The new page controls menu referenced throughout this article will attempt to offer Safari 18 users quick and easy access to several options previously located across different menus and the Share Sheet. Running on pre-release versions of macOS 15, for instance, the menu also pulls in the "Aa" menu common on existing iPadOS versions of the browser. These include zoom options, webpage settings for privacy controls, content blocking options, extension shortcuts, and access to the new AI and erasure tools.

These various options existed previously on macOS, but were found by navigating through the Safari settings menu. Having all of these controls in one central location in the Address Bar will make these options more discoverable for end users. Other options like on-page text search and reader mode are also in this menu.

This all suggests Apple intends to unite the iPadOS and macOS Safari UI paradigms when it unveils its new OS releases during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

AI-enhanced Visual Lookup feature could be available in 2025

Simultaneously, Apple is also working on a much more powerful visual search feature scheduled for integration sometime in 2025 that will allow users to obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images. People familiar with the tool say it's similar to the Visual Lookup feature, through which Siri can identify plants, pets and landmarks from photos.

An image of a black cat with big yellow eyes in Apple Photos with text below classifying it as a 'bombay'

Visual Search could be implemented as a system-wide feature. So, instead of surfacing search results in the Photos app, the user may be able to use Visual Search directly in Safari by selecting an image.

Given development of this tool is in the earlier stages, it remains unclear how Apple will ultimately go about implementing it. It also remains to be seen whether or not the feature will make it through internal testing.

The iPhone maker has expressed significant interest in artificial intelligence and more recently published research related to on-device language learning models. This goes hand in hand with widespread rumors about several other AI-powered software features, many of which are expected to make their debut later this year with iOS 18.

Another big year for Safari

From its inception, Safari was always meant to rival existing web browsers.

A Flickr login screen with password auto fill shown as a pop-up

Safari was originally added to macOS as a means of replacing Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac, which was the default browser. Over the years, the app made its way to the iPhone , and has since received various upgrades over the years.

More recent versions of Safari provide users with personalized web suggestions, and allow for greater privacy protection with features such as iCloud Private Relay.

This latest set of enhancements only serves to better position Safari against the competition, in an ever-increasing landscape of generative AI tools and third-party ad-blockers.

While Apple tests many such features during different development stages, it is important to remember that not all of them make it to release. Apple has been known to delay features or cancel them entirely, so there's always a chance we may not see these new Safari features after all.

Along with Safari 18 and its associated improvements, we should also see a revamped Calculator with Math Notes make its way to iPadOS 18. Freeform Scenes and Adaptive Voice Shortcuts are new OS features, which are also expected to debut later this year.

Apple is expected to introduce various AI-related enhancements as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, both of which should be announced at the company's annual WWDC on June 10.

As long as I can turn it off/hide it they can knock themselves out.

Will the web eraser feature remove pop up videos, such as the ones that appear on this site?

I use the 'Reader' function in Safari quite a bit, but sometimes it doesn't work very well. Seems like something that AI could help make better.

Web ads suck but how else do you think your favorite websites will stay in business? Are you prepared to pay a subscription to every site? I doubt it…

Videos not playing after IOS17.1.1 update

I have a iPhone 11 and since the IOS 17.1.1 update, new videos I’ve taken will not play. I’ve tried looking at settings and can’t see anything that would prevent it from playing. My older videos play just fine but any new ones since I did that update just sit there doing nothing.

iPhone 11, iOS 17
