The indie veterans will hit the road for gigs next March and April, with the tour kicking off in Northampton and stopping in Newcastle, Oxford, Brighton, Cambridge, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Sheffield, London, Coventry and Frome.

Formed by Clint Boon, Gill joined Inspiral Carpets at the age of just 14 in 1986. He played with the band throughout their 90s heyday and remained when the band reformed to tour and record their self-titled, final album in 2014.

Tickets for the upcoming tour go on sale on Friday October 21 at 10am and can be found here .

“@martynwalsh has decided to opt out of this round of touring for personal reasons,” they wrote. “We fully respect his decision & hope everyone else understands. Martyn is very much still a member of the band & the door is open for his return in the future xxx”

HAPPY MONDAYS announce UK tour for 2024 with special guests Inspiral Carpets & Stereo MCs

Happy Mondays

Legendary Manchester band Happy Mondays have announced a 16-date UK tour for March and April 2024, which will be their only shows of 2024. They will be joined on this special run of shows by very special guests and fellow ‘90s British music icons, Inspiral Carpets and Stereo MCs.

The Manchester Legends’ first headline tour in five years will begin in Glasgow on 14th March and end in Brighton on 14th April and includes a hometown date at Manchester’s O2 Victoria Warehouse on 4th April and a date at London’s Troxy on 6th April.

Billed as ‘The Been There Done That Tour’, Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder, Bez (freaky dancing and percussion), Rowetta (vocals), Mark Day (guitar), Gary Whelan (drums) and Dan Broad (MD/guitar/keys) will perform the band’s classic hits such as ‘24 Hour Party People’, ‘Step On’, ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Loose Fit’, ‘Judge Fudge’, ‘W.F.L.’ and ‘Kinky Afro’, amongst many others.

Shaun Ryder said, “We’re really looking forward to the Happy Mondays’ first headline tour for five years. We’ll be playing all the hits for everyone, so it’s going to be a lot of fun. See you there!”

Bez said, “Can’t wait to get out on tour with Happy Mondays. Shake your maracas in the air like you just don’t care!”

Rowetta added, “Me and my voice can’t wait to sing all across the UK for a tour to remember.”

Happy Mondays became the pioneers of the Madchester sound after signing to Tony Wilson’s Factory Records in the late ‘80s, blending their love of funk, rock, psychedelia and house with the sounds of the UK’s emerging rave scene.

The band became icons of Britain’s biggest cultural phenomenon for a generation when they crossed over into the mainstream with the release of their third album, 1990’s platinum-selling ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills And Bellyaches’.

The Happy Mondays’ reputation as one of Britain’s most influential and loved bands was recognised in 2016 when they won the Ivor Novello Inspiration Award.

Alongside Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets were one of the most popular bands to emerge from the late-’80s/early-’90s Madchester scene. Following their 1989 Indie Chart-topping singles ‘Find Out Why’ and ‘Move’, the band released their breakthrough hit ‘This Is How It Feels’, which began a run of four UK Top 20 albums, Life (#2), The Beast Inside (#5), Revenge of The Goldfish (#17) and Devil Hopping (#10) .

Nottingham’s Stereo MCs first achieved mainstream success when their 1992 single ‘Connected’ became an international Top 20 hit. Taken from their smash hit Top 10 album of the same name, Connected was followed by hit singles ‘Step It Up’, ‘Ground Level’ and ‘Creation’, firmly cementing Stereo MC’s place in Hip Hop/Electronic Dance history.

Tickets for the Happy Mondays’ ‘Been There Done That Tour’ go on sale at 10.00 am on Friday, 6th October, available from www.alttickets.com and www.happymondaysofficial.co.uk

Legendary Manchester band Inspiral Carpets are reuniting for a 2023 tour

The group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2015 shortly after the death of their friend and drummer

Daisy Jackson

Manc legends Inspiral Carpets have announced details of a live tour next spring.

The group, who were an integral part of the Madchester movement, are heading out for their first live shows since 2015.

They say it will be a ‘celebration of the music we created, which has brought so much joy to people over the last 34 years’.

The tour will, of course, include a date in their home city here in Manchester , where they will perform at the Albert Hall.

Inspiral Carpets first formed in Oldham in 1980, and are loved for singles including This is How it Feels , Saturn 5 , and She Comes in the Fall .

Their keyboard player Clint Boon is a familiar face on Manchester’s music and nightlife circuit, DJing at venues and festivals across the region.

The group last performed at the Leeds O2 Academy, but went on an indefinite hiatus after the death of their close friend and drummer Craig Gill.

A statement from the group said: “Craig’s death had a profound effect on many people.

“The outpouring of love from around the world at the time gave some comfort to his family and friends as we all tried to come to terms with what had happened.”

  • Factory International in talks to sell naming rights to £210m arts complex to help fund rising costs
  • Andy Burnham says government is in ‘chaos’ and calls for early general election

The shows will both celebrate the band’s history and commemorate the life of Craig.

They continued: “We know this will be an emotional journey for a lot of people, not least Craig’s family.

“We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate some of the music we created, and which has brought so much joy to people over the last 34 years.”

Tickets for the tour will go on sale at 10am on Friday 21 October at gigsandtours.com/tour/inspiral-carpets .

We’ve now seen enough stories, interviews and admittedly convincing speculation to start seriously wondering whether Bugzy Malone is going to fight Floyd Mayweather.

Yes, in case you haven’t been keeping an eye on this story which looks to be gradually building more and more momentum, UK rapper and actor Bugzy Malone is being linked with a possible boxing match with one of the most successful fighters to have ever lived, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

One of the biggest and most anticipated match-ups in years is just around the corner between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk (no, it’s actually happening this time, honest) but some fans now have their eye on an arguably more exciting exhibition that could take place right here in Manchester.

In fact, it’s now become such a genuine possibility that Bugzy himself, real name Aaron Daniel Davies, even addressed the rumours head-on in a recent interview with Eddie Hearn .

Bugzy Malone reveals to Eddie Hearn how rumours about him fighting Floyd Mayweather started 🥊👀 Listen to @EddieHearn : No Passion, No Point on BBC Sounds 🎧👊 https://t.co/KRZpLWaPnl #bbcboxing #bmalone pic.twitter.com/FdMpiIKmqu — BBC 5 Live Sport (@5liveSport) April 19, 2024

As the local grime artist from Crumpsall reveals in his sit down with the boxing mogul, who said that people in the industry had been hearing talk of a fight for some time, Floyd himself is said to have asked someone to contact Bugzy about a potential fight by way of a ‘private jet’ enquiry, no less.

Random one, for sure, but that’s just rich people things.

As detailed in the full episode of Hearn’s No Passion, No Point podcast for the BBC, it was actually Mayweather Senior who apparently saw a video of the Manc rapper training online and went on to suggest the fight to his son.

Having seen his physique and admitting he “looks strong”, and Bugzy’s love of boxing well-documented – a discipline he turned to earlier in his career to try and ‘stay out of trouble’ – Mayweather Jr then had this call set up and quickly began a discussion surrounding potential fight papers.

The 33-year-old even addressed the contract being ‘on the table’ in a snippet from the song ‘Daily Duppy’ from his latest album, The Great British Dream , which dropped on Friday, 10 May.

@FloydMayweather heard you wanna fight? 🤔 Somebody go tell him i’m down! 💯💯💯 Anyway, Daily Duppy out now… #TheGreatBritishDream pic.twitter.com/yrKHt0XBvK — Bugzy Malone (@TheBugzyMalone) March 21, 2024

Only ever having really plied his trade in the amateur arena, the prospective bout obviously wouldn’t be a full professional fight and with Mayweather having already taken on a number of exhibitions – most notably against influencer Logan Paul – his interest was already believable even before Hearn’s interview.

As Bugzy confessed in the chat, he had already been offered multiple fights in the past but had turned them down due to the advent of “ YouTube boxing “, insisting that he’s “not really interested in stepping into it”, but a credible offer for an actual fight against a legendary sportsman would turn anyone’s head.

Mayweather famously boasts a 50-0 unbeaten record, including 27 knockouts and 12 world championships in five different weight classes. Well, Bugzy won Best Grime Act at the MOBOs this year, so shove it.

Fellow boxing promoter Spencer Fearon also weighed in on how plausible the punch-up currently is, going on to corroborate details surrounding said offer made by the private jet company backed by millionaires and adding that Bugzy “can actually fight”, for those who were wondering about his ability.

  • Liam Gallagher says he’ll ‘gig in Lidl’ if Co-op Live still isn’t ready – and they sound up for it
  • Pubs can extend their opening hours if England make it to the Euro 2024 semi-finals

As Fearon puts it, the fight is “one million per cent genuine”, it’s a case of both sides being willing to pull the trigger and decide on things like the fight purse etc.

As for when we could expect to see this fight, who knows? However, there are indications it could happen later this year and the Manchester native would obviously want to have it at the AO Arena where the likes of Fury, Ricky Hatton, Anthony Crolla and others from the region have fought before him.

If you’ve seen even one picture of Bugzy Malone before you’ll know the man keeps himself in shape, but you only have to take a glance at the top of his Instagram page to see he’s been training pretty hard since last summer.

The question is, will the stars align and could, say, summer 2024 be the moment in sporting and entertainment crossover history that we get to see Bugzy Malone take on Floyd Mayweather in the ring?

funny co-op live birthday and greeting cards

A UK card company has decided to join in with the pile on over Co-op Live’s chaotic ‘opening’ weeks by creating a series of greeting and birthday cards mocking the arena and its ongoing saga.

If you’re a deeply sarcastic person who struggles to be sincere with those you hold nearest and dearest or simply want to get a co-worker something that says we care that you’re leaving but not so much as to let go without one final dig, these are right up your street.

After multiple cancellations, postponements and gigs being rescued by the AO Arena and more, it’s no secret that things could barely have gotten off to a worse start for the Co-op Live, having been described as ‘the Manchester Fyre Festival’ among a number of unflattering comparisons.

So, with that in mind, greeting card company thortful – who are just as good at novelty as they are being actually thoughtful when it comes to words – have come up with a few clever little ways of wishing someone a happy birthday or congratulating them on their new home at the arena’s expense.

inspiral carpets tour support act

Not bad, to be fair.

Tim Leiweke, Chairman and CEO of Oak View Group (which owns and operates Co-op Live), recently released a statement offering his ‘sincere apologies’ and explaining the steps being taken during the venue’s ‘short pause’.

He admitted, “It’s not been the smooth start we had planned for, and I know that has caused a huge amount of disruption and frustration to thousands of people”, adding that they are “working incredibly hard to get the building up and running, and we look forward to welcoming you to the arena from 14 May 2024.”

The London-based card company is known for lots of comedy captions and with every Tom, Dick and Harry taking a pop at the venue already, they clearly thought ‘We might as well join in’.

In fact, they’ve been taking the mick ever since the whole thing kicked off.

The date mentioned above will see Manc music legends Elbow arrive as the venue’s new opening act artists after so many other acts ended up having their gigs pulled and we can only hope and pray that everything is on course for next week.

With more and more names being announced for their 2024 and 2025 calendar left right and centre, the most recent being rapper Travis Scott , it looks as though they’re confident that the arena will open and live up to the expectations it has built up given its billing as the biggest indoor entertainment in the UK.

As for thortful and everyone else, we just have to wait with bated breath to see if there’s set to be another twist in this tale and enjoy the light-hearted jokes in the meantime.

‘The Inspirals were seen as the runt of the Madchester litter but history has been kind to us’ … from left, Clint Boon, Tom Hingley, Craig Gill, Martyn Walsh, Graham Lambert.

‘After gigs, we’d drop off our drummer to do his paper round’: how Inspiral Carpets made This Is How It Feels

‘Part of the song’s appeal was the sound of our Farfisa organ, which featured in everything we did. Our former roadie Noel Gallagher borrowed it for the last Oasis album’

Clint Boon, songwriter, organist

I used to stand in front of my mirror pretending to be Elvis. Then punk came along in 1976 and I saw the Sex Pistols at the Electric Circus in Manchester . The Clash, Johnny Thunders and the Buzzcocks were also on the lineup. The ticket cost £1.50! It was my road-to-Damascus moment. I thought: “I don’t have to dream. I can do this.”

Inspiral Carpets started as a punk garage band in the style of the Seeds or the 13th Floor Elevators. It took years, but by 1989 people were coming to see us and buying our records. It was everything I’d dreamed about and just got better over the next five years. At the height of Madchester, the music press called the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and us “the holy triumvirate”. The Inspirals were seen as the runt of the litter, but history has been very kind to us.

Despite being very excited about what was happening, I wrote This Is How It Feels when I was down. I wanted to put my feelings into a song so I wrote a kitchen-sink drama in which my emotions could play out in a fictitious world. I pictured a working-class family: in the first verse, the mother is depressed but no one knows why; in the second, it becomes apparent there’s been a suicide. The guy that’s just died has been having an affair with the woman from verse one. It goes: “She can’t say, they can’t see, putting it down to another bad day.” She can’t tell anyone why she’s so upset. So within the song you’ve got infidelity, deceit, mental health, suicide and loneliness. On the single version, I changed a couple of lines to make it less graphic. “It seems they found him under a train” became “He left a note for a local girl”.

A big part of the song’s appeal is the sound of the 1966 Farfisa organ, which was at the heart of everything we recorded. The oboe effect in the middle sounds like the instrument is crying. I found the Farfisa through the small ads and I’ve still got it. Noel Gallagher borrowed it for the last Oasis album. In fact, it’s the same instrument he used to set up for us when he was our roadie.

Craig Gill [drummer who died in 2016 ] did that iconic rolling beat that gives it a different energy. He joined us when he was 14 and had a paper round. When we played in London, we’d drive back through the night and drop him off to do his paper round before school. We’ve got a drummer called Kev Clark now, who was a friend of Craig’s and replicates his rhythms beautifully. The song feels more poignant when I listen to it now.

Graham Lambert, songwriter, guitarist

Whenever someone brought a song in, the rest of us would descend on it like vultures, all suggesting changes. But I don’t remember much changing with This Is How It Feels. Clint just came into the practice room with the melody and said to our singer Tom Hingley: “These are the lyrics and this is how it goes.”

after newsletter promotion

Noel Gallagher working as a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, Manchester 1992.

We recorded it in the Out of the Blue studio in Ancoats, Manchester, in autumn 1989. We hadn’t signed to Mute at that point so we paid for the session ourselves, doing it on the cheap. I can still remember how cold it was in the studio but it had a sound that suited us, with lots of reverb on the drums.

After we signed to Mute , they wanted a remix. I walked into Out of the Blue – and found the tape of the song all over the floor. Luckily, our producer Nick Garside managed to spool it all back up and send it to Flood – who’d done U2 and Depeche Mode – for remixing. We made the video on Snake Pass between Manchester and Sheffield. It was January, freezing, and we got this director who looked like Dr Death but it turned out to be Anton Corbijn .

This Is How It Feels was our first hit. The song seems to have resonated down the years – it’s been taken up by football crowds and such. The recording is a bit ropey in places but the vibe captures how we were at the time: young blokes just going for it.

Inspiral Carpets: The Complete Singles is available on Mute on 17 March. The band’s UK tour starts at Northampton Roadmender on 23 March

Inspiral Carpets Announce 2023 Greatest Hits Tour – Their First Australian Shows in 30 Years

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

30 years since they last visited the country, influential Madchester outfit Inspiral Carpets have announced their return to Australia. The veteran English group will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a national tour throughout July and August 2023.

Inspiral Carpets formed in 1983 and rose to prominence later in the decade alongside contemporaneous Mancunian acts The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays . They released their critically-acclaimed debut album, Life , in 1990 and their second, The Beast Inside , in 1991. The band’s one and only Australian tour came in 1993, by which time they’d released their third album, 1992’s Revenge Of The Goldfish .

Inspiral Carpets – ‘This Is How It Feels’

Inspiral Carpets released their fourth album, Devil Hopping, in 1994 but were dropped by their label, Mute Records, in 1995 and split up shortly thereafter. The classic lineup of vocalist Tom Hingley, guitarist Graham Lambert, keyboardist Clint Boon, bass player Martyn Walsh and drummer Craig Gill got back together in 2003 for a couple of UK tours.

Original vocalist Stephen Holt replaced Hingley in 2011 and the Carpets released their fifth album, Inspiral Carpets, in 2014. The band parted ways again in 2016 following Gill’s death at the age of 44. Lambert, Boon and Holt will be joined on the upcoming Australian tour by drummer Kev Clark and bass player Jake Fletcher.

Inspiral Carpets interview: “We were outsiders”

By John Earls | March 9, 2023

inspiral carpets tour support act

As the Inspiral Carpets prepare for an emotional first tour since the tragic death of drummer Craig Gill in 2016, the band reveal all about their days as outsiders in the hedonistic Madchester scene and how they were once held off the No.1 spot in the UK albums chart by The Carpenters…

A lthough Inspiral Carpets were chart staples throughout the first half of the 90s, they were a band stood to the side of the scenes around them.

Their first line-up, on debut album Life , represented a spikier garage rock offering than the baggy groove of their fellow Manchester bands.

By the time the Inspirals split after 1994’s fourth album Devil Hopping , they had too much of an edge for the triumphant mood of Britpop.

“We were outsiders,” acknowledges Clint Boon, the cheery keyboard player who made a 60s Farfisa organ the centrepiece of the Inspirals’ headrush sound.

“When we started doing gigs supporting Happy Mondays, James and The Stone Roses , I was aware that we were completely different: a psychedelic throwback, with an electric organ as our main instrument.

“But I appreciated being thrown in with Madchester because, even though we didn’t have any of that scene’s hallmarks, Madchester was colourful and it was our city.”

“When you’re on the outside of it, you can think: ‘ Happy Mondays have done this, The Stone Roses have achieved that,’” admits equally affable guitarist Graham Lambert. “But if you’re content with what you’re doing yourself, you can only wish other bands all the best.”

“Britpop was weird for us,” considers Boon. “There was a strong mod element to our sound, a real Britishness. Britpop started off as kitchen-sink dramas, and we’d done that on songs like This Is How It Feels and Joe . We were definitely one of the bands to lay Britpop’s foundations.”

That outsider status has at least helped strengthen the Inspirals’ identity with their fans, drawn to a band who have forged their own path since 1988’s debut EP, Plane Crash .

That loyal following has been part of the inspiration for wanting to return after the death by suicide of drummer Craig Gill in 2016, when the band had begun working on their second album since reforming in 2011.

Having announced their first tour since Craig’s death, singer Stephen Holt explains: “The tour will be a celebration of Craig’s life and what he brought to the band.

“We’re also celebrating the fans, who have been so supportive. It’ll feel different and it’ll be emotional without Craig, but the time feels right to celebrate the love that’s out there for the band.”

Inspiral Carpets’ last show was in December 2015 at Leeds Academy, supporting Shed Seven. Their new tour includes a concert at the same venue.

“People say ‘Life goes on’, and we want to move on,” says Holt. “But it’s hard. She Comes In The Fall was Craig’s chance to show off onstage, with the drumroll at the end of the song. Craig not being there for that, it’s going to be so emotional.”

The new tour’s drummer is Kev Clark, who played with Stephen in his post-Inspirals band, The Rainkings, as well as cult Manchester rockers Dub Sex and ChameleonsVox.

“Before the first rehearsal with Kev, I thought: ‘How’s this going to go?’” admits Lambert. “If it hadn’t worked, we’d have knocked it on the head. Kev is from a non-pop background and plays our songs perfectly. He made me think: ‘We can do this.’”

The line-up also features Paul Weller’s bassist, Jake Fletcher, who is on the tour because Inspirals bass player Martyn Walsh doesn’t feel ready to return to playing live yet.

“It’s completely amicable,” emphasises Clint. “Martyn hasn’t had the same urge as the rest of us to resume doing shows, but he’s said: ‘Feel free to go on without me’ and he’s still our bass player.

“For me, Steve and Graham, it was: ‘Now’s the time’, because there’s unfinished business with the band.

“We didn’t get chance to say goodbye to the fans properly. Maybe we’re resurrecting the Inspirals for a few years, or maybe we’ll do the shows next year and it’ll be the final chapter. Either way, we need to do it properly.”

All the band state that Kev and Jake’s personalities were as important as their musicianship in fitting into Inspiral Carpets.

The one constant member since forming the band in Oldham with Stephen in 1983, Graham struggles to think of a common thread between the various musicians who’ve been part of the Inspirals.

From the outside, it appears that you need a professionalism and welcoming attitude to anyone wanting to join their club. When the band split in 1995, Lambert worked at major tour promoters SJM.

It’s telling that, asked what he’s learned from working in the other side of the music industry, Graham responds: “You look at some people and think: ‘I’d never have him working for our band, he’s rude.’”

That friendly nature doesn’t mean the Inspirals are permanently easy-going, of course. After Plane Crash and second EP Trainsurfing , Holt and founding bassist Dave Swift left to form The Rainkings, dissatisfied with feeling the band were becoming too poppy.

“Looking back, I was naïve,” admits Stephen. “Bands move on, that’s how I should have judged it, not thinking we were moving away from what I wanted. I spat my dummy out, when I should have stayed and had an influence.”

Holt had co-written half of what became Life . With dramatic new singer Tom Hingley, the album featured the timeless This Is How It Feels and She Comes In The Fall . Known as an incendiary live band, the Inspirals kept record companies at bay when making the LP.

“Recording Life was completely out of our own pockets,” recalls Boon. One of the ultimate T-shirt bands, tees like the legendary Cool As Fuck , as well as demos compilations Cow and Dung 4 , paid for sessions with producer Nick Garside.

“The way we did it was proper working class,” smiles Clint. “Early write-ups in the press called us ‘workmanlike’ and ‘industrious’, and it’s true that we were grafters. We spent a lot of time mithering people, knocking on doors to tell everyone how good our band was.”

It was only after Life was recorded that Inspiral Carpets signed to Mute. With their new label’s help, Life reached UK No.2 in 1990, kept from the top by The Carpenters’ hits collection Only Yesterday .

“They’re a fantastic pop band,” insists Lambert. “One of the only tickings-off Daniel Miller at Mute gave us was because, the week both our albums were out, I bought four copies of The Carpenters, including one for my mum. Daniel said: ‘What are you doing that for? You should have waited! You’re potentially keeping yourself off No.1.’”

A year to the week later, the band’s second album, The Beast Inside , reached UK No.5. Its heavier, more sombre mood was a shock to fans who expected more singalongs.

“We didn’t plan it,” reflects Boon. “We’d been travelling the world, having experiences we couldn’t have had if we’d stayed in Oldham. We went to Dachau, where the sound of its church bell was incredibly ominous and powerful.

“We were older, wiser and a bit down in the dumps because we were away from home for long periods. We realised while we were making The Beast Inside that it was a different mood, but we went with it. It’s a beautiful album and it’s got some of our finest moments.”

1992’s Revenge Of The Goldfish – its title and artwork borrowed from New York artist Sandy Skoglund’s photo after Clint said in interviews he felt the band were living in a goldfish bowl – returned the Inspirals to a more up-tempo vein, the first of two albums made with ex- S’Express associate Pascal Gabriel.

That album included the anthemic Dragging Me Down , before 1994’s Devil Hopping featured contrasting classics in the absurdly catchy Saturn 5 and the punky menace of I Want You .

“We’re all credited as writers on our songs, but we all have our individual ideas,” explains Graham of the band’s prolific output. “There’s always someone with a song or idea, ready to jam it out, so we’re never short of material.”

A reworking of I Want You featured The Fall’s Mark E Smith in what, by his cantankerous standards, was a pop moment, complete with a Top Of The Pops performance where Graham remembers him insulting Elvis Costello backstage.

“He was as much of a handful as you’d expect,” notes Lambert drily, as Boon adds: “We were one of the few Manchester bands that Mark liked.

“We had a 60s psych-garage connection he was into. He’d tell me: ‘I like you, you sound like The Seeds.’ I was a massive Fall fan and Mark was always complimentary about us.”

The end came in 1995 when Mute were unimpressed by the demos of a putative fifth album, which was set to return the band to their garage roots.

“We thought we’d walk straight into another deal,” says Clint. “But the geography of everything in music had changed. We were perceived as being over. We ended it, and took the opportunity to do other things.”

Eight years later, Inspiral Carpets reformed. Further tours followed, but Tom Hingley quit in 2011, abruptly posting on Twitter that the band had split. This was news to the rest of the Inspirals.

“I felt angry,” admits Graham. “But I eventually realised I was only angry because Tom had left. Tom was a brilliant singer, always professional onstage. We’ve all moved forward and I think now we have a fairly good relationship.”

Boon suggested Holt should rejoin. Since leaving in 1988, Stephen has worked in addiction counselling, having studied a social science degree in the early days of Inspiral Carpets. He now manages a drug and alcohol rehab centre.

He laughs: “I was in a massive meeting with the other managers I was working with when my phone pinged with a text from Graham: ‘Fancy singing again?’ It took me five minutes, if that, to say yes. I wanted to see if we could still do it, and at least resolve things properly.”

Holt’s only condition on going back behind the microphone is that there would be new music, resulting in 2014’s self-titled album, a hard-edged melodic spiritual cousin to Life .

Inspiral Carpets were working on new material with Craig Gill before his death. They all hope that, having secured the blessing of the drummer’s family and if the desire is there after the tour, that those tracks – “a continuation of the self-titled album with some slower songs, too,” according to Stephen – will become Inspiral Carpets’ sixth album.

Whatever happens, next year is time to celebrate. Inspiral Carpets are still industrious, but you can guarantee their shows will be anything but workmanlike.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
