Experience our beautiful wilderness spending a few days in the saddle on your mountain horseback riding vacation! With our 2 and 3 day overnight Idaho horse pack trips, you’ll encounter true western hospitality as we provide mountain camp accommodations consisting of large wall tents with cots and a solar shower for added comfort. Many of our guests enjoy early morning or evening wildlife safari’s heading out on scenic horseback riding trails or hiking where elk, deer, antelope and an occasional mountain goat or sheep can be viewed and photographed.

Goat Lake, at an elevation of 9,400 feet is an additional 4 1/2 mile ride from the Cow Creek camp. This secluded, beautiful Alpine mountain lake is loaded with native trout and offers some pleasant fishing.

Pioneer leads the industry in professional packing and camping, operating in the White Cloud Wilderness.  We provide wholesome home-cooked meals and plenty of it, including real dutch oven main dishes and desserts.  Your food won't be boiled or fried with cheap aluminum cookware.

Entrees Include:  rib-eye steaks, grilled chicken, pork chop, tri-tip, dutch oven pork tenderloin, and lasagna

Breakfast Includes:  classics blueberry pancakes, cinnamon french toast, Dutch oven breakfast (biscuits and gravy) and the coffee pot is always full.

Base Camp Pack Trips Idaho

Back Country Fishing Trips Idaho

For the true fisherman. Big Boulder chain lakes, Little Boulder chain lakes Chamberlain lakes, and Champion Lakes offer the best fishing you will find in the entire SNRA. It's a beautiful thing to find yourself fishing the crystal clear waters of the White Cloud Wilderness.  Don't forget your float tube. We pack you in on horseback as far as the horses can go, and then guide you on foot, to very high remote rarely fished mountain lakes, some being over 10,000 feet in elevation. Guests easily catch fish either fly fishing or spinner fishing. Fishing trips are also fully catered leaving you the time to enjoy the lakes, streams, and the beauty of the mountains.

No riding involved.

Another fully catered trip enabling guests to use their own horses, it offers you your choice of campsites. We tailor this trip to your group and riding style, ensuring the most out of your backcountry experience.  All you need to do is drop us your personal gear and we will meet you at a designated camp.  We will have camp set up and ready for you when you arrive maximizing your time spent enjoying the beautiful White Cloud Wilderness.

Riding restrictions include anyone under 6 years of age and guests weighing over 250 pounds.  Exceptions are sometimes made on weight if you are exceptionally tall. 

*All trips require a 40% security deposit and are subject to Idaho sales tax and a 3% Forest Service use fee. Some trips require additional charges. (Example: trucking fees, equipment rental, etc.) Gratuity is also not included.

Roving Horseback Pack Trips

• Our extended guided horse pack trips are designed so guests can really experience the White Clouds Wilderness.
• These trips move camp every other day with layover days allowing time to relax, fish or day-hike. 
• You’ll be able to photograph the wildlife, identify the alpine flora and relax next to a high mountain lake while spectacular scenery surrounds you.
• Meals are prepared fresh, horses are gentle, guides are friendly and knowledgeable and all equipment is provided except your personal gear and sleeping bag. 
• Dates are scheduled on a first come first serve basis from July through September.  Exact destinations and travel route will vary depending upon length of trip.

Multi-Day Base Camp Adventure Fishing or Photography

• This multi-day mountain lake fly fishing trip begins with a guided horseback ride into your reserved camp located in the heart of the White Cloud Wilderness
• Your cozy camp will consist of 14×16 sleep tents complete with wood stoves and comfortable cots with four (4) inch foams.
• All meals are served family-style.  Our covered kitchen is completely set-up with propane stoves, bar-b-que facility and wash up area.
• We bring all the fresh essentials and more to offer a variety of scrumptious grilled entrees while you concentrate your efforts on “matching the hatch.”
• Our knowledgeable fly fishing guides will also instruct you on techniques if you are new to the sport.  
• If more photographic opportunity is what you’re looking for or just a change of scenery, you may choose to hike to one of several other lates in the immediate area, too.

Wild Horse Viewing or White Cloud Day Ride

• This historic day-ride opportunity will take you back to a time when the West was still unsettled and when wild horses still roamed free.
• Today, a free-ranging herd of about 300 animals, makes its home in the low rolling hills outside Challis.  This herd is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and offers an excellent viewing opportunity from horseback.
• Departure points vary and scheduling is flexible.  
• Lunch is included and advance reservations are necessary.

Full-Day Ride In Challis Valley

• For those with less time to spend in the Idaho backcountry, we offer a full day ride out of the Challis Valley.  
• Specific routes vary and may be chosen depending upon photographic, historic, or wildlife interests.
• Departure time from our ranch is 10:00 a.m. with arrival back at 4:00 p.m.
• A hearty lunch and beverages are provided.

Wilderness Pack Trips

For the more experienced there is an overnight spot pack trip in which you travel to a campsite and stay overnight before returning to the lodge the next day. For those that are into the outdoor experience and want to take a longer trip, there is the continuous pack trip in which you may take small side trips or move your campsite as needed. Often for these trips, you will be charged by the day.

For the more experienced outdoor individual, it will be enjoyable to take a tour that allows you to control your destination. However, if you aren’t that experienced with pack trips you can still have a wonderful experience by hiring a guided tour.

Wilderness Pack Trips

Destinations depend on the mileage that each group would like to ride and what the primary focus of each trip is. Our popular lake destinations are Toxaway, Imogene and Edna Lake. Please give us a call to discuss the best possible destinations for guided fly fishing trips, families or experienced horse riding groups.

Trip deposits of 40% are due upon booking. The remaining trip balance will be due 45 days prior to trip and will be non-refundable. Wild Horse Creek Ranch

25 miles east of Sun Valley, experience life on a western ranch without sacrificing amenities. Horseback riding, comfortable accommodations, swimming pool, and great meals.

Take a pack trip either aboard a horse or with the assistance of llamas as pack animals. Nearly every trail in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and in the wilderness areas in the region is “horse friendly” and “llama friendly”. Horseback riding outfitters and llama outfitters are available to take you on any length of trip.

A favorite family friendly activity in the Sun Valley area is a pack trip either aboard a horse or with the assistance of llamas as pack animals. There are many outfitters in the area who specialize in making this adventure one of your most memorable experiences. Outfitters and guides offer a variety of backcountry trips. The longer trips include all amenities – gear and meals – and can include fishing opportunities in the wilderness area.

Where to go on a pack trip

For true solitude and a unique experience try a pack trip in many of the areas in the immediate vicinity of Sun Valley. Nearly every trail in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and in the wilderness areas in the region is “horse friendly” and “llama friendly”. For long backpacking trips into the wilderness area, you may want to consider using a horse to ride, to pack your gear or to do both. In addition, there are a multitude of trails in the Copper Basin area near Mackay, Idaho.

You can ride through towering evergreen, and along historic mining and logging trails in the Galena area. Near Redfish, you will find rides to Alice, Sawtooth, Marshall, and Hell-Roaring Lakes. There are enough trails in this area that you can take overnight and longer trips if you want. Another interesting day trip is to Pole Creek Ranger Station. Built in 1909, Ranger Bill Horton fenced off a pasture for his horses next to the station. It is a beautiful place with a corral for your horses.

Away from crowds, Grandjean is an older campground with all the character that comes with age. Campers with horses, tent and recreation vehicle enjoy this scenic campground along the Payette River. This campground also features immediate access to the Sawtooth Wilderness and a network of delightful trails. Take these trails to explore deeper into the wilderness area.

After a savory dutch-oven dinner and a relaxing evening by the fire, we'll retire to our cozy tents under the stars; you'll be recharged for another day on horseback. On this middle day, or "off day," we won't break camp, which gives us the opportunity to venture out and explore some of Kevin and Deb's favorite secret spots! The third day we will load up again and either mosey on to our next campsite or back home, depending on the length of your trip.

Badger Creek

3-DAY PACK TRIP

This Wyoming pack trip traverses some beautiful forested areas of the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. As we travel up Dry Ridge towards the Crow's Nest, the lodge-pole pines and aspen groves open up to spectacular views of the Teton Range. The horses won't have any trouble finding their way down the Bear Walk Trail to our lush camp near the banks of Badger Creek. Try your hand at fishing or brave a swim in this cold but clear stream. Rammell Mountain or Dead Horse Pass are ideas for day rides. Horseback riding doesn't get any better!

Yellowstone/Bechler Three Rivers Hot Spring

3-DAY YELLOWSTONE PACK TRIP

This Yellowstone pack trip will be a 3-day/2-night progressive camping adventure in the Bechler Region of Yellowstone National Park. Depending on our group, we can day ride to Colonade Falls or venture on to the Three Rivers Hot Pots. The Bechler Canyon is one of the most beautiful areas of Yellowstone, so don't miss this one! Yellowstone/Bechler Boundary Creek-Three Rivers

5-DAY YELLOWSTONE PACK TRIP

This Yellowstone horseback riding adventure is a 4-night/5-day progressive camping trip. We will wander through the Bechler region of Yellowstone National Park. From our first campsite, located on Boundary Creek, we will day ride to Dunanda Falls. If time allows, enjoy a soak in some small hot pools at the base of this waterfall. Our third day will take us on a 4-5 hour ride through one of the most beautiful canyons of the Park, bringing us to our second campsite in the Three Rivers Hot Spring area. From this site we can take a short ride to Three Rivers' Hot Pot ("Mr. Bubbly") and soak or allow Kevin to guide us to the Pitchstone Plateau.

Granite Basin

Saddle up and take a horseback ride from the North Leigh trailhead along Tin Cup Creek. As we cross the open meadows, we'll enjoy breath-taking views of the Teton mountain range in Wyoming near Jackson Hole. You can stop along the way to take pictures in the wildflower meadows, fish in the high mountain lakes or hike to the top of Little's Peak (10,712 ft. elevation). The riding and hiking takes a little stamina but is well worth the effort - guaranteed!

Hidden Corral

This Wyoming pack trip leaves from the Coyote Meadows trailhead and travels along the south fork of Bitch Creek. Prepare to ride your horse through a rocky trail alongside the roaring Bitch Creek Narrows. We'll make camp for two days at the edge of a spectacular mountain meadow, known as Hidden Corral. There's plenty of feed and water for the horses, and for the daring, a few cold swimming holes. Try your hand at fishing in streams throughout the meadow. Our day trips include Dead Horse Pass or Camp Lake. Can't make a wrong choice with those options!

Survey Peak

We will begin our pack trip at the far north end of the Teton Range, riding along South Boone Creek. The trail climbs high above the canyon looking out as far north as the Bechler Meadows of Yellowstone National Park. We will spend 2 nights in this private little spot below Survey Peak. Enjoy the early spring wildflowers and views of the horses as they graze up on the hills above camp. For our day ride we have the choice of a horseback ride into Teton National Park to Berry Creek or to the saddle below Forellen Peak. The Survey Peak camp is a great place for a mid-July pack trip and the riding is suitable for all abilities.

Badger Canyon & Granite Basin

5-DAY PACK TRIP

Badger Canyon and Granite Basin offer some of the most spectacular views of the Tetons anyone could ask for. This pack trip will be a 5-day/4-night progressive camping trip staying two nights in our Badger Canyon campsite and moving on the 3rd day into Granite Basin . While in Badger, we'll take a day to horseback ride to Rammell Mountain and our day trip in Granite Basin will take you to the watershed divide for 360 degree views of the Tetons, Teton Valley, Idaho and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This horseback ride will take your breath away! Some riding experience is recommended as some of the trails will be steep and/or rocky. This is a beautiful trip!

Survey Peak to Granite Basin

7-DAY PACK TRIP

If you enjoy lots of horseback riding, camping below the stars, relaxing around a campfire, fishing in mountain streams and lakes, and wandering through mountain wildflower meadows, then this Wyoming pack trip will be an EXCELLENT choice for you. This is a 7-day/6-night progressive pack trip staying two nights in three different campsites: Survey Peak , Hidden Corral & Granite Basin (or Badger). We will be taking day trips on our "off" (or non-move) days to scenic spots such as Berry Creek in Teton National Park, Forellen Peak, Camp Lake and/or the Watershed divide. Be prepared for long days in the saddle, fantastic scenery, and an excellent feel for the entire Teton Range.

Riding time: Our move days could be approx. 6-7 hours. Riding experience: Intermediate to Advanced

Hidden Corral to Badger Creek

Our 5-day horseback trip from Hidden Corral to Badger Creek includes incredible views, picnics among the wildflowers making for five days on horseback though the northern end of the Tetons. This truly is a trip to remember!

Upper Boundary Creek to Union Falls

This 5-day horse pack trip in Yellowstone includes fun river crossings to begin our journey, as well as some fishing and swimming. Experience some of Yellowstone's thermal pools and waterfalls. Don't forget your bathing suit and fishing rod!

Riding time: Our move days could be approx. 5 hours. Riding experience: All levels with some previous riding experience.
