Explore Downtown Kelowna

Kelowna’s Downtown core is just north of the floating bridge by City Park and Hot Sands Beach. See the “Downtown Map” for parking. The lake side promenade extends from the bridge past Bernard Ave, the Marina, Waterfront Park Boat Lock and Tugboat Beach to the Rotary Marshes. Walk up Bernard Avenue, a popular downtown area lined with restaurants and shops. Visit the Kelowna Visitor Centre next to “The Sails” sculpture at the foot of Bernard Ave. Downtown is the place to be for lake side, roof top and patio restaurants, outdoor entertainment and night clubs. In the Cultural District, around the Grand Hotel, you will find museums, the art galleries, the library and the Rotary Centre for the Arts as well as more great restaurants.

Go for a sightseeing hike

Experience history, breathtaking panoramas and fabulous fun on the excellent hiking or biking trails in the mountains surrounding Kelowna. There are many levels of hiking options in the Okanagan. A couple of easy walks/rides close by: (1) Knox Mountain is minutes from downtown, at the north end of Ellis Street. Kelowna’s premiere natural park, the lookout looms close over downtown and provides an excellent view of Okanagan Lake. (2) Historic Myra Canyon on the famous Kettle Valley Railway is located in the mountains on the Southeast end of the city. It’s view is much higher than Knox and is also very popular with visitors. With acres of vineyards and over 35 wineries, Kelowna and West Kelowna are part of one of the ultra-premium wine producing regions in the world. Visit large and long-established wineries to small, intimate family farms. And it’s a great way to explore our beautiful region, even if you’re not a wine lover. You can do a self-guided or guided wine tour. A tour company can show you the special hidden gems, the new, the historic and the ‘tried and true’ wineries to visit. They can pick you up from your home or accommodations so you do not have to worry about drinking and driving. Relax on the Beach

Kelowna has miles of sandy beaches and 22 beachfront access parks. City Park and Tugboat Beach downtown are two of the most popular. Two popular beaches on Lakeshore road south of downtown are Boyce-Gyro and Rotary. All these beaches have amenities including grassy areas, boardwalks, picnic areas, playgrounds, concession stands, rentals and washroom facilities. City Park has a large kids water park. Much smaller beachfront access parks are found along Abbott Street and Lakeshore Road. Bear Creek Provincial Park is in West Kelowna down Westside Road next to the campground and a loop waterfall hiking trail. Also in West Kelowna are Kalamoir Beach, more secluded with lakefront trails, and Willow Beach, next to the Gellatly Bay walkway. Many more are not mentioned here- see the map.

Shop till you Drop

Along HWY 97 is the region’s largest indoor mall, Orchard Park Mall. It offers over 170 stores ranging from fashion, accessories, beauty products, and electronics as well as a 500 seat food court. Orchard Plaza has over 75 shops, restaurants and services, including Save on Foods, MEC, and Winners. It’s also home to a Famous Players 5 screen cinema. Several other shopping centers can be found along HWY 97. Downtown Kelowna is known for boutique shoe and clothing stores, a huge variety of restaurants, art galleries, great ice cream and gelato. In West Kelowna explore the big chain stores around the Westbank Hub Centre. Local goods can also be found at the wineries and at the Kelowna Farmers and Crafters Market – Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Enjoy the Parks

Abundant green spaces are connected by biking trails and paths from Knox Mountain to Mission Creek Greenway, one of the Okanagan’s most accessible wilderness paths. Starting at Lakeshore Rd, the greenway winds along Mission Creek all the way to Gallaghers Canyon in East Kelowna. The first 7.5 km are flat and wide, popular with cyclists, dog walkers and runners. At the Springfield Road entrance to the park, you will find the EECO CENTRE. Further up is Scenic Canyon Regional Park. Hike on the well-maintained paths to discover historical treasures, see old rock ovens and abandoned gold pits. In West Kelowna just opposite Bear Creek Provincial Park campground, are several hiking trails that lead to the waterfalls, swimming holes and a view over the lake.

With over 2,000 hours of sun every year, Kelowna boasts one of the longest and driest golf seasons in the country. Several of the golf courses offer incredible views of the lake, while their clubhouses offer après golf dining experiences. Try Mission Creek Golf Course is a mature, mid length 18-hole golf course that borders the Mission Creek Greenway. For a unique experience in an Orchard setting or for evening golf, choose Orchard Greens, the only golf course to flood light the entire course. For a great putting course, try 19 Greens in West Kelowna, located just across the bridge. Scandia Golf & Games has both outdoor mini golf and indoor Jungle mini golf.

Play in the Lake

Imagine how welcome a dip in sky-blue Lake Okanagan feels on a warm sunny day. At 135 km long and 4 km wide, there’s plenty of room for everyone. Rent a canoe, try windsurfing, paddleboats, or jetsking. Note that a licence is required to operate any motorized watercraft. Local rental companies can assist you with your licence and basic instruction to help you have a safe and enjoyable time. Sunwave Boat Rentals offer a mobile delivery service that makes renting a boat quick and easy. They meet your group at a boat launch, complete a rental agreement and orientation and send you off to enjoy the lake. At Lakefront Sports Centre and you can rent a power boat from OkanaganRentaboat.ca, patio boat or Jetski at their dock by the boat launch at the Grand Hotel downtown or fly high with Okanagan Parasail Co.

Have fun indoors

Orchard Park Mall offers air conditioned indoor shopping. There are indoor playgrounds, attractions, wineries and arts and cultural venues. Downtown Museums include: Okanagan Heritage Museum, Okanagan Wine and Orchard Museum, Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame, Okanagan Military Museum and the Art Gallery. Performance Arts are alive at Kelowna Community Theatre (KCT), one of the Interior’s largest performing art venues and Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA). Fun is non-stop at Scandia Golf and Games with 130 arcade games, rides, a roller coaster simulator, bumper cars, Go-Karts, Canada’s largest mini-golf course and batting cages. As for the tour itself; prior to our tour, we were able to make suggestions on the wineries we wanted to visit and we were pleasantly pleased that we went to a couple of wineries that none of us had ever visited before. The tour was great, Reign was knowledgeable about the wines and the wineries and the folks at the Wineries were very helpful and informative. We wrapped up our tour with a lovely gathering at the last venue, where Cheers had organized a venue and fantastic Charcuterie spread. Everyone had a great time and all arrived home safely. An eclectic 32 wineries reside within the 3rd biggest metropolitan area in BC. It is no wonder this city is growing at alarming speed. It all started here when the first vines were planted in 1859 by Father Pandosy. BC’s oldest winery ‘Calona Vineyard’ was established here in 1932 and can still be visited in downtown Kelowna. It's now owned by the Andrew Peller Group and occupies the same building as Sandhill Wines.

Policies & Cancelations:

RESERVATIONS:

For Signature Tour bookings, a 50% deposit is required at the time of booking. Deposits require a valid credit card. The remaining balance is due 48 hours in advance of your scheduled tour date. Remaining balance can be paid using e-transfer or credit card. All prices exclude applicable taxes & gratuity. For a Private Signature Tour booking we require 8 or more people.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

Deposits are fully refundable for cancellations or changes made 14 days or more prior to the reservation. Sip & Anchor reserves the right to retain deposits for cancellations or reductions of the number of guests made less than 14 days prior to the reservation date, or in the case of no-shows.

All passengers are required to read & sign a waiver release agreement form prior to boarding the boat. This can be provided via email or at the time of your arrival.

WEATHER NOTE: 

We will wine tour rain or shine!  In the case of poor weather forecast, we do our best to provide 24 hours weather-watch notice for the boat portion of the trip. If we do not end up boating, we can reschedule a 2 hour charter (based on availability) or provide a refund of $50 per person, or, if there is availability we can extend the wine tour. Contact us for more info.

BAD WEATHER POLICY:

The Captain reserves the right to cancel the boat tour portion due to bad weather conditions. Guests will have the opportunity to add 2 additional wineries, or a cidery and brewery to their tour.

CONDITIONS:

Sip & Anchor reserves the right to change tour vehicles, guides, departure times, &/or winery & restaurant itineraries. Your reservation assumes release of the operator from liability or any assumption of claims, risks & indemnity.

To minimize cash transactions, we provide a dropdown gratuity option at the time of your booking, allowing you to select a 15% or higher gratuity.

Although you have already included gratuity at the booking stage and feel that your Guide has delivered exceptional service beyond your expectations, offering a cash tip at the conclusion of your tour is always appreciated.

Guide to wine touring: lake country.

Journey to Lake Country, where picturesque vineyards meet tranquil waters, creating an idyllic setting for a vibrant wine experience. Here's your guide to discovering the wineries of Lake Country.

In the heart of the Okanagan Valley, Kelowna is the birthplace of BC’s wine industry. The region’s rich viticulture heritage dates back over a century, when the first vines were planted. The area’s first commercial winery, Calona Wines, was founded in the early 1930s, marking the beginning of the Okanagan’s flourishing wine industry.

Today, the region is celebrated for its diverse array of award-winning wineries. There are close to 40 wineries in Kelowna and its surrounding communities, including West Kelowna and Lake Country, many of which have continued to evolve their farming and viticulture practices to be more sustainable.

This year, to celebrate the region and encourage visitors and locals to visit its exceptional wineries, Tourism Kelowna launched the #exploreKelowna Wineries Pass . Through this Guide to Wine Touring Series , we’ll introduce you to the wineries featured through the pass and give you tips to make your wine touring experience memorable, informative, and fun!

Wine Touring in Lake Country

There is a reason Lake Country’s wine route is called the Scenic Sip, with its lake and mountain views, rolling hills, and inviting scenery.

Though technically located in Kelowna, Ancient Hill Estate Winery has been welcomed as part of the Scenic Sip route. The winery specializes in small-lot wines crafted entirely from grapes grown in its own vineyard.

The views from the quaint patio don’t disappoint as you look over vineyards and the mountains surrounding Kelowna. Ancient Hill’s European-style wine shop also offers an assortment of cheese, crackers, and non-alcoholic beverages that can be enjoyed in the shop or on the patio.

Once you’re in Lake Country, the first stop on your tour is Arrowleaf Cellars . The winery’s modern tasting room commands attention, set amongst the trees and with expansive views of Okanagan Lake.

The winery sources 90% of its grapes from Lake Country, with the other 10% from Kelowna. Arrowleaf offers tastings at its bar, as well as more in-depth private seatings. As part of its Fall Wine Experiences , Arrowleaf will be participating in the inaugural Kelowna Apple Fest, and will also be hosting a Wine & Cheese Paired tasting and a Library Wine Tasting & Tour on Thanksgiving weekend.

Across the road from Arrowleaf, you’ll find Ex Nihilo , which has vast vineyards and an unassuming tasting room. Once you enter the beautifully designed tasting room, you can choose between the Signature Tasting or the Memor Vivo Tasting, a longer, seated experience.

Starting at the end of September, Ex Nihilo will  launch its  Dinner Series , which combines  exceptional wines with fresh flavours crafted by Executive Chef Danny Tipper and his team. Tickets are already on sale for the September dinner, an opportunity to savour the tail end of summer.

Next is Gray Monk Estate Winery , established in 1972. The estate’s 75 acres of vineyards overlook Okanagan Lake, and the tasting room is perched at the top of the inclined lot.

To wrap up your tour, you’ll wind your way along the scenic Carrs Landing Road to reach 50 th Parallel Estate , set on a 61-acre site near the shores of Okanagan Lake. The expansive tasting room comprises floor-to-ceiling walls, allowing you to take in the surrounding beauty of the vineyards and lake.

You can taste 50 th Parallel’s small portfolio of exceptional wines with one of its 5 tasting/tour experiences. Recommended Route for Wine Touring in Lake Country

From Kelowna, you’ll want to head north on Hwy 97 toward Lake Country. Take a right-hand turn on Old Vernon Road and head north until you reach Anderson Road, where you’ll again take a right-hand turn. Continue north on Anderson Road (a left-hand turn near Sunset Ranch Golf Course) until you reach Ancient Hill Winery.

To get back on Hwy 97 from Ancient Hill, you’ll go north on Anderson Road, then take a left onto Teather Road, which will take you back to Old Vernon Road. Head north (a right-hand turn) on Old Vernon Road around the airport, and you’ll link back up to Hwy 97.

From there, you can continue your journey to Lake Country. When you enter the community, you’ll want to take a left-hand turn onto Okanagan Centre Road East, on which you’ll head north until you reach Camp Road. Turn onto Camp Road and continue driving until you hit Arrowleaf Cellars. Just across the road and slightly north, you’ll find Ex Nihilo.

When finished at those two spots, continue north on Camp Road, taking a sharp right-hand turn, and wind your way up to Gray Monk. Camp Road then connects to Okanagan Centre Road West, which you’ll take heading north to Cars Landing Road.

The trip from Gray Monk to 50 th Parallel Estate is about 14 minutes, taking you along the scenic Cars Landing Road. Be sure to turn onto Terrace View Road at the northern part of Cars Landing Road to access the winery.
