Review: Celebrity Edge

celebrity cruise edge

What is the line? Celebrity Cruises

Name of ship? Edge

Passenger occupancy? Around 3,000

Itinerary? Rome to Barcelona

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Celebrity is part of the Royal Caribbean Group known for its solid mix of family-friendly entertainment and floating fun in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and other parts of the world. Celebrity always takes things a step further by mixing a bit of upscale glamor into its ships, especially its newest vessels. Just remember not everything is included, but this allows travelers to pay for the extras (drink packages, specialty dining or shore excursions) that fit their needs.

Tell us about the ship in general

The ship set sail in 2018 on Celebrity’s classic Mediterranean and Caribbean sailings with around 3,000 passengers immediately enamored with this next phase in the line’s ships. While hardly the largest ship at sea, Edge delivered a new chapter in amenities for the line that made headlines: a cantilevered bar (dubbed the Magic Carpet) that rose up and down the side of the ship like an elevator; rooftop garden with art sculptures; and a restaurant with 3D animation on the table where Michelin-starred cuisine is served. Celebrity tapped famous well-known names like Nate Berkus (the duplex Sunset Bar) and Gwyneth Paltrow (the spa using GOOP products) to influence various features of the ship.

Who is onboard?

Edge class vessels are sure to attract a more sophisticated, maybe even slightly older, crowd although this could be dependent on the itinerary. Families are on board, but not as many as on other ships. This ship also has made such a, forgive the pun, splash that it appeared to draw lots of first-time cruisers on my sailing. The mix of American and European travelers was obvious with multiple languages exclaiming their impressions of the exotic design spaces, which were unlike anything I had seen on most other ships.

Describe the cabins

Bright and colorful, the cabins had pops of magenta, purple or green. There are inside cabins as well as ocean-facing staterooms (either via windows or verandas). What I found most exciting was the new Infinite Veranda category, which extended the cabin all the way out to the edge of the ship, using what would traditionally be the balcony’s space as additional living room space. The traditional balcony with sliding door was replaced by an electronic window that could be electronically lowered halfway creating the illusion of a balcony while also expanding the cabin’s footprint. Another unique feature: there are single-cabin, Infinite Veranda rooms, which gives solo travelers yet another stateroom option that won’t break the bank.

AquaClass cabins are focused on a wellness routine with everything from pillow menus and Cashmere mattresses to healthy dining in a private restaurant and VIP access to the spa and thermal suite. In The Retreat, it felt like a world unto its own. A private lounge had snacks and drinks all day plus an outdoor terrace where I would routinely work from as we sailed away.

Tell us about the crew

The crew hails from around the world and brings next-level hospitality to each guest, but it was the staff in The Retreat that impressed me most. They took the time to remember my favorite white wine (a French Chablis), favorite time for breakfast (usually in my stateroom, in bed around 9 am), favorite place to sit on my laptop (on the terrace in The Retreat lounge) and even preferred spot by the pool (in the shade, but with a side view as we were sailing). When out and about within the ship, I found that if you developed a routine by visiting the same spot for pool towels, Indian food on the buffet or pizza from the aft grill, the staff would also remember your name, too.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Instead of your standard main dining room, I really loved how this ship divided the included dining area into four separate restaurants (each with their own menu like Mediterranean or French). This means you can dine in a different environment each day without paying extra.

Specialty restaurants are also available for an extra fee. There’s a raw bar and sushi counter, American steakhouse, French bistro, garden grill, Le Petit Chef (kids and adults love watching the cartoon chef dance on the table screens and walk guests through their meal experience) and Eden, where the mulligatawny soup and tandoori style beef were my favorites. Kudos to Celebrity for creating an entire plant-based tasting menu rather than leaving vegetarians with the same-old boring pasta and Portobello burger options you’d find elsewhere.

The Magic Carpet is open as a restaurant or just as a bar, and to experience its different positions as it ascends the side of the ship while you dine or tipple is great fun. AquaClass guests have their own restaurant serving healthier fare, as do suite guests in The Retreat, both of which are included in the rate for those passengers. I personally loved the way Oceanview Cafe was designed. It’s the buffet, but it has a back patio terrace that seems like you’re on a private yacht with only a few tables. Instead of one traditional line, the buffet is grouped into small islands with a presentation much more like a gala event with carving stations, charcuterie and cheese boards, and destination-specific dishes (I loved the large paella).

There are always burgers and fries by the pool, drinks at every corner of the ship (don’t miss the Berkus-designed Sunset Bar where you can watch the ship’s wake as you sail away from beautiful ports) and craft cocktails in the Eden Bar. Many afternoons, I would nestle myself into one of the swing chairs behind the living garden walls with a book.

The martini bar in the center of the ship comes alive in the late afternoon and evening with bartenders putting on shows for patrons. I couldn’t believe a stack of 20 full martini glasses, one on top of the other, didn’t topple over as they were building a beverage pyramid to the applause of other passengers.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

After an excellent massage in the spa (I was lucky to get a coveted spot on the sea day as those can go quickly), I headed for the Thermal Suite for a soak in the sauna and steam room. Since the sauna has a window looking outward, you could watch the ocean pass by as you relaxed.

There was also a salt room, crystalarium (where I counted on the healing Amethyst crystal to rectify a week’s worth of indulging in the great food and drink on board), and heated tile lounge chairs to finish off the experience while facing the ocean. Instead of working out in the enormous gym, I chose to do laps around the ship’s wraparound jogging track.

Activities and entertainment

I loved spending time at the rooftop garden with a book, catching a movie on the large screen or having a bite to eat in the breeze on a sailing day. Live bands perform here during each sailing. The pool deck buzzes with activity, and it is hardly as crowded as you might see on a much larger ship. The solarium has another pool protected from the hot sun, which was great on port days when there was limited breeze.

The architecture of the ship’s exterior and interior spaces is very design-forward. Large art sculptures, a hallway of distorted mirrors, curving staircases and a striking chandelier in the tri-deck grand plaza are all just some of the elements that would make you think you’re in a hotel on land rather than on sea.

The theater has a wraparound design with people sitting in almost a complete circle with the stage in the middle. Enormous electronic screens synced to the music or theme of the production only add to the excitement in the shows. Some of the screens rise up to reveal additional stage areas for cast members behind them. My favorite performance was “A Hot Summer Night’s Dream,” a show that blends extracts from Shakespeare’s writing with an impressive acrobatic and dance show, topped off with dramatic music. It was truly something different compared to other cruises.

How was the experience for families?

There are both kids and teens clubs divided into age brackets to target the appropriate activities. Among them are video game tournaments, educational activities and even slumber parties, but the location on one of the lowest floors seems like it is designed to isolate the ruckus of fun from the quieter pool and resort deck areas (something I didn’t mind at all).

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

The excursions are not free, but I enjoyed wandering on my own in each of the ports. Most of the time, the ship docks near tourist areas, but sometimes you may have to pay extra for transportation. This is the case in places like Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Livorno (the port for Florence) where a train or bus is necessary).

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Edge is 20 percent more energy efficient than previous classes and it is designed to have fewer emissions. Single-use plastics are minimal, and guests will only be offered a paper straw upon request to reduce waste.

Anything we missed Don’t be surprised by the performance artists in Eden that stop by different tables with magic tricks or entertaining acts as you enjoy a cocktail. It’s whimsical and fits well with the garden-style design of the space. The club can be very busy on some nights, but just “crickets” on others. It depends how early of a morning most travelers have the next day (some ports have early tour departures).

Basic Wi-Fi is included in the fare, which works well for email or web surfing, and I used it frequently while I was remote working from the ship. You can pay extra for streaming speeds.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

Adults will find Celebrity Edge to be an excellent ship for a romantic getaway or for fun with friends. Families have plenty to do, too. Often on other ships, couples need to hide away to avoid the hubbub, but on Celebrity Edge , the ratio of ample space for only 3,000 people means that, like me, you’ll find a corner to call your own.

Anyone lucky enough to be going to Honolulu doesn't have to give a reason for going. They can just say, "We're going to Honolulu," and imagination will take care of the rest. Moreover, Honolulu can probably live up to and even surpass whatever we imagine. World-famous beaches and tropical weather set the scene for an amazing mix of Pacific cultures in this Hawaiian capital. There is a reason why Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the nation's top travel destinations; in fact, there are several of them. Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand and the incredible nightlife. Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rainforests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors into some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum, combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city. The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial, commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II. Honolulu exhibits the best of Hawaii in every way. From its famous beaches to its incredible natural preserves, this town has attracted millions of people from around the world. Many of those visitors stayed, helping to make Hawaii one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse places to visit in the United States. Anyone lucky enough to be going to Hawaii knows that he won't be disappointed.

The Polynesians arrived in the Hilo area about 1100 A.C. They eventually inhabited the shores of Hilo Bay, farmed their crops, fished and traded their goods along the Wailuku River.  In the late 1700’s, the days of King Kamehameha’s rule, Hilo was the center of political activity and social growth. It was the prime place for the King to build his army of ships designed for conquering the Hawaiian Islands. By 1791 native Hawaiians had traveled as far as the United States and China. The King befriended many of the foreigners who traveled to the islands. With such considerable traveling, the Hawaiian way of life soon became influenced by products ranging from iron to livestock to non-native seeds.    Hilo became a stopping place for explorers, whaling ships, traders and those curious about active volcanoes. By the 1900’s, Hilo had grown into a commercial center. The sugar industry was booming, a number of wharves had been constructed, the breakwater was begun and a new railroad connected Hilo with other parts of the island. Then in 1946 – and again in 1960 – two destructive tsunamis swept Hilo’s Bayfront causing the relocation of Hilo’s government and commercial life. When the town was rebuilt, a large park and roadway were situated between the buildings and the shoreline to absorb future tidal waves.   Besides being a rare surviving example of an Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo’s special charms. The local term, “mixed plate”, describes well the impact made by Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders and Europeans on Hilo’s mixed-race culture of today. All these ethnic groups blend in the faces of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse shopping opportunities, its small scale and its friendliness makes Hilo the perfect town in which to linger just a little longer.

Kailua/Hawaii

celebrity cruise edge

Historians and researchers believe that it is possible that Kailua was home to Hawaiian families at least 1,500 years ago. The earliest settlers are thought to have lived fished and played on the slopes surrounding Kawainui Marsh. A Bishop Museum report on archaeological excavations of the marshland concludes that when the marsh slopes were first occupied about 500 A.D., agriculture was not possible. The report said that early Hawaiian occupants of Kailua apparently lived beside a lagoon or bay open to the sea hundreds of yards shoreside of today's shoreline. In the 16th century, Kailua attracted the ali'i giving birth to many rich Hawaiian legends, some of which may be found in written and oral reminiscences in Hawaii State Libraries. Many legends were born here including the menehune who were known for working at night in Kaiwainui Marsh and mo'o who took the shape of a large lizard that attracted fish. Kailua was densely populated before the arrival of Captain Cook and was the ancient capital of O'ahu's kings. The biggest event in Kailua and the entire Windward side was in 1795 when King Kamehameha I conquered O'ahu in his quest to unite the Hawaiian Islands. The King granted Kaiwainui Marsh and old Kailua, which included large freshwater fish ponds and saltwater ponds at Mokapu, to the warriors and chiefs that had helped him. The land was used in various forms for agriculture from sugarcane to rice to taro and eventually was used primarily for cattle raising. Kailua was a sleepy town of barely 3,000 in the 1940s. However, the events of World War II changed the appearance of Kailua. Kaneohe Ranch sold portions of land to the government for expansion of the Navy base and the Army's Fort Hase. Finally in 1942, Kaneohe Ranch closed down its cattle raising operations entirely, freeing thousands of acres for post-war development. Harold K.L. Castle, owner of Kaneohe Ranch, donated the land for many churches, schools, and for a new hospital. A new four-lane highway, tunneling through the Ko'olau Mountains, was completed in the late 1950s. In 1946, a small Liberty House (now Macy's) shop opened with three employees and upgraded to a full-line department store in 1953 with nearly 50 employees. The first bowling alley, a branch office of the telephone company, and the very first supermarket in Hawaii opened in Kailua in 1947. By the end of the 1950s, Hawaii had become a state and Kailua became the official postal designation. Castle Hospital opened in 1963. By 1960 the population was up to 24,400. The town has grown more than 100 percent since 1960 when its population was 24,402. It has a compact, easy-to-shop business district surrounded by mostly single-family homes. By 1992 50,000 residents encompassed a central urban core with surrounding residential areas.

Cosmopolitan

Main Dining

Cosmopolitan Restaurant:  The main dining experience across Celebrity's fleet is one of the reasons guest's sail with them time and time again. To maintain this essence of the Celebrity dining experience on Edge, they've created the Cosmopolitan Restaurant — the next evolution to their current main restaurants. The walk-through wine display at the entrance sets the scene for the creative cuisine within — new American with global influences.

Normandie Restaurant:  With ties to Celebrity's elegant Murano specialty restaurant on many of their ships and a nostalgic nod to Celebrity Summit® (wooden panels from the ship are incorporated into the design), Normandie Restaurant features contemporary French cuisine in a modern, upscale, refined space that evokes the romance of springtime in Paris. Enjoy regional European wines, deliciously unique cocktails, tantalizing starters, and mouthwatering entrées.

Cyprus Restaurant:  Dear to their hearts, this restaurant represents Celebrity's Greek heritage. They wanted to create a stunning atmosphere that would represent the Mediterranean fare served here, so they've worked with world renowned designer, Patricia Urquiola. In Cyprus, the menu's main focus is seafood and features simple, clean dishes that celebrate the food and beverages of the Mediterranean region.

Tuscan Restaurant:  Step inside and discover the delicious ambiance — a modern classical design centered around Italian fashion and film. Savor mouthwatering cuisine inspired by authentic southern Italian eateries, featuring all homemade pastas prepared with a rustic flare. Your taste buds will get a tour of southern Italy without even stepping ashore.

Blu:  Available exclusively to AquaClass® guests, Blu specializes in the concept of "clean cuisine." Popular dishes are prepared in imaginative and flavorful ways, without fussiness or pretense. Blu is open for breakfast and dinner.

Luminae at the Retreat®:  Globally inspired and cutting-edge dining, exclusively reserved for Celebrity's Suite Class.

The menu, also available at the Magic Carpet when positioned on deck 5, will feature more casual offerings like Shrimp Salad, their signature Lobster Roll and sushi and sashimi prepared by our expert sushi chefs. This restaurant is available for an additional cost.

Magic Carpet:  Moving up and down the side of the ship, when on Deck 5, Magic Carpet is an open-air extension of Raw on 5. Here you'll find an airy, casual seafood restaurant offering select Raw on 5 favorites as well its own unique menu. When these two restaurants meet, it's the perfect pairing for an unforgettable al fresco dining experience as you glide over the glistening water below. 4 types of Celebrity Cruises ships, explained

Gene Sloan

Of the seven big cruise lines that account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans, Celebrity Cruises has one of the simplest fleets.

At the core of the brand are 12 relatively big ships that can be bunched into just three groups.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

Each of these groups — known as "classes" in cruise industry lingo — is made of ships that were constructed around the same time with the same basic design. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

In addition, Celebrity operates three very small vessels in the Galápagos that, together, make up a fourth grouping of vessels. As we'll explain below, these three vessels are far different than the line's 12 main ships and constitute what is, in effect, a separate business for the brand.

An introduction to Celebrity Cruises ships

For years, Celebrity has been one of the cruise industry's great innovators when it comes to new cruise vessels.

The line's three new Edge Class ships are widely heralded as three of the most innovative cruise ships at sea. They offer such groundbreaking features as cabins with glass walls facing the sea that open at the top to create a balcony-like feel and "Magic Carpet" platforms on their exteriors that move up and down for a variety of uses.

The Edge Class ships are just the latest vessels at the line to break ground when it comes to innovation.

The line's somewhat older Solstice Class ships also offer a number of features that were groundbreaking in their time and — in many cases — remain rare and alluring more than a decade after they first debuted.

Carrying about 2,000 to 3,000 passengers apiece, Celebrity's 13 main vessels are large but not giant by today's standards. At around 91,000 to 141,000 tons, they're nowhere near as big as the giant ships operated by Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line .

The line's three Galápagos-based vessels are downright tiny, as they have to be to operate in the Galápagos. The government of Ecuador, which controls the archipelago, does not allow cruise vessels that carry more than 100 passengers to operate in the destination.

Celebrity's three Galápagos-based vessels carry just 16 to 100 passengers each.

In general, Celebrity's biggest and most amenity-packed ships are its newest ships. If you're looking for a cruise experience with the most possible onboard activities and venues, you'll want to steer toward the vessels in Celebrity's Edge and Solstice Classes.

If cruising in a more intimate environment is your preference, you'll want to look at Celebrity's older Millennium Class ships, which are significantly smaller than the Edge and Solstice Class ships.

The three small Galápagos-based vessels are the vessels you want if you're itching to see the famously wildlife-filled islands.

Compared to such cruise operators as Carnival Cruise Line , which has eight different classes of vessels , Celebrity has a relatively easy-to-understand fleet.

Ships in class: Celebrity Ascent (2023), Celebrity Beyond (2022), Celebrity Apex (2020), Celebrity Edge (2018).

Size: 130,818 to 141,420 tons.

celebrity cruise edge

If you're in the "newer is better" camp when it comes to cruise ships, this is the Celebrity ship class for you. Celebrity's Edge Class just began rolling out in 2018, and the four vessels in the series that have debuted so far are the most advanced vessels in the Celebrity fleet.

They might also be the most advanced vessels in any cruise fleet.

Designed to carry 2,908 to 3,260 passengers apiece at double occupancy, the four vessels — Celebrity Ascent, Celebrity Beyond, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge — each boast such innovative new features as "Infinite Veranda" cabins with outward-facing walls that are entirely made of glass.

celebrity cruise edge

Billed as an industry first, the new glass-walled cabins were made possible by a rethinking of the way the load-bearing walls of cruise ships are constructed.

Notably, the top of the glass wall in the cabins slides down at the flick of a switch to create a balcony-like area — an innovation that, until recently, only had been seen with cabins on river cruise ships. The balcony-like area can be closed off from the rest of the cabin by shutting bifold doors.

Another innovative feature of the Edge Class ships is their 90-ton platforms the size of a tennis court that are cantilevered over the side of the vessel and used for all sorts of functions.

Dubbed Magic Carpets, the platforms (there is one per ship) move up and down to serve as everything from tender boat boarding areas to 90-seat alternative restaurants.

celebrity cruise edge

Among other unusual features, the Edge Class ships have top deck plant-filled "playscapes" called the Rooftop Garden with an outdoor eatery called the Rooftop Garden Grill. Inspired by childhood playgrounds, they're designed to "awaken the inner-child in everyone," the line has said.

The ships also offer unusual, glass-walled lounge, dining and entertainment areas, including Eden, created in collaboration with famed designer Patricia Urquiola, and covered, adults-only solariums designed in collaboration with renowned British architect Tom Wright.

celebrity cruise edge

In addition to being Celebrity's newest and most innovative ships, the Edge Class vessels are the line's biggest ships — though they aren't all that much bigger than the line's Solstice Class ships. The bigger size allows for a few more onboard venues than can be found on the line's older vessels.

Note that the fourth vessel in the Edge Class series, Celebrity Ascent, is a tad bigger than its two predecessors, which allows for a few new and expanded features like additional solo cabins and a private room that groups can rent for karaoke, movie screenings and virtual games. Meanwhile, slightly older sister ship Celebrity Beyond was the first to introduce an expanded "resort-within-a-resort" area for suite passengers called The Retreat. It offers a new two-story sun deck with hot tubs, lounge chairs and private cabanas that are open exclusively to passengers staying in suites.

The two newest vessels also include a greatly expanded Sunset Bar at the back of the vessel with a Morocco-inspired design imagined by celebrity interior designer Nate Berkus and a new restaurant created by star chef Daniel Boulud.

Celebrity has plans for five Edge Class ships. One more vessel is under construction for delivery in 2024.

Solstice Class

Ships in class: Celebrity Reflection (2012), Celebrity Silhouette (2011), Celebrity Eclipse (2010), Celebrity Equinox (2009), Celebrity Solstice (2008).

Size: 121,878 to 125,366 tons.

celebrity cruise edge

Comprising five vessels, Celebrity's Solstice Class is the biggest class of ships at the line and it accounts for nearly half of the brand's total capacity.

As such, the Solstice Class is probably the class of ship you will sail on the most if you become a Celebrity regular. Solstice Class ships sail everywhere from the Bahamas, Caribbean and Alaska to Europe, Asia and Australia.

When this class of ship first started rolling out in 2008, they were heralded for their game-changing design and features, including a few things that still are unique in the cruise world.

Just a tad smaller than the Edge Class ships, the Solstice Class vessels are perhaps best known for the innovative, half-acre Lawn Club areas on their top decks, which feature real grass.

celebrity cruise edge

Marvels of cruise ship engineering, the Lawn Clubs are maintained by full-time greenskeepers who oversee a complex filter and irrigation system to keep the grass looking shipshape. Home to Adirondack chairs, hammocks and lawn games such as bocce and croquet, these Lawn Club areas offer a quiet, park-like respite from the activity in other parts of the ships.

If you want, you can walk across the Lawn Clubs barefoot.

Among other unusual features, some of the Solstice Class ships also have a glass-making pavilion next to the Lawn Club that offers glass-making classes conducted in partnership with Hollywood Hot Glass.

The Solstice Class ships are also home to some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea. Like the Edge Class ships, they also feature indoor, adult-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship's power grid.

In addition, the Solstice Class ships feature large spas, casinos, showrooms and a wide range of restaurants, including the line's signature French venue, Murano.

Other places to dine on the vessels include Le Petit Chef, which offers an augmented reality dining experience using tabletop projections, and the Lawn Club Grill, part of the Lawn Club.

celebrity cruise edge

One of the Solstice Class ships, Celebrity Reflection, is also home to one of the cruising world's most spectacular suites — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite ever on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Millennium Class

Ships in class: Celebrity Constellation (2002), Celebrity Summit (2001), Celebrity Infinity (2001), Celebrity Millennium (2000).

Size: 91,000 tons.

celebrity cruise edge

The oldest of Celebrity's three main classes of vessels is its Millennium Class. The four ships in the series began rolling out in 2000 (at the turn of the millennium, hence the name) and all are now around 20 years old.

Despite their age, the vessels still appear very up to date, thanks to some major overhauls in recent years.

Initially, the Millennium Class ships and Solstice Class ships had quite a few differences. However, over the years, these differences have narrowed as Celebrity has added some of the most popular Solstice Class venues to the Millennium Class ships, too.

Related: The ultimate guide to Celebrity's Captain's Circle loyalty program

The most obvious difference between the two classes of ships today is the smaller size of the Millennium Class vessels. They're about 30% smaller than Solstice Class ships.

celebrity cruise edge

This smaller size can make the Millennium Class vessels a good choice if you're the kind of cruiser who prefers a more intimate experience.

However, the smaller size also means that the Millennium Class ships have fewer venues in all than the Solstice Class or Edge Class ships.

All the restaurants you'll find on Millennium Class ships are on Solstice Class ships, for instance. However, not all the eateries on Solstice Class ships can be found on Millennium Class ships. If you're a fan of Murano, you won't find it on the Millennium Class.

Galápagos vessels

Ships: Celebrity Flora (2019), Celebrity Xploration (2007), Celebrity Xpedition (2001).

Size: 2,842 to 5,739 tons.

celebrity cruise edge

As mentioned above, Celebrity operates three very small vessels in The Galápagos Islands.

While each one of the vessels is a bit different, they can logically be grouped together, as they offer a similar type of cruise experience — one custom-designed for the islands where they sail.

The cruise experience on these three vessels is different than what you'll find on Celebrity's larger ships. The vessels are smaller than Celebrity's traditional ships, carrying just 16 to 100 passengers. In contrast, Celebrity's larger ships accommodate 2,000 to 3,000 passengers.

The smaller size means the three Galápagos vessels have fewer onboard amenities than the bigger Celebrity ships. If you love the onboard attractions of Celebrity Solstice or Celebrity Edge, know you won't get the same array of bars, restaurants and entertainment in the Galápagos.

celebrity cruise edge

That's okay because cruising in the Galápagos isn't about the time you spend on board. The goal is to experience the region's unique wildlife that inspired Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection.

To do that, you need to get off the ship. All three of Celebrity's Galápagos vessels are expedition vessels that carry landing craft for exploring in remote areas and sail with knowledgeable guides who are all Galápagos National Park-certified naturalists.

The highlights of each day are the daily landings with these guides to view the destination's famous tortoises, blue-footed boobies, land iguanas and Darwin's finches.

celebrity cruise edge

One of the newest and most luxurious vessels in the Galápagos, the 100-passenger Celebrity Flora features two restaurants with menus crafted by a celebrated chef, a laboratory for hands-on science lessons, multiple lounges, a plunge pool, a stargazing platform and two sets of cabanas for deck-top glamping.

All of Celebrity Flora's accommodations are suites. The top rooms on board are two penthouse suites that measure 1,300 square feet each and span the entire width of the ship.

Bottom line

The Celebrity Cruises fleet is relatively easy to understand. There are three main classes of vessels — the Edge, Solstice and Millennium classes. There's also a fourth grouping of three small vessels that operate exclusively in the Galápagos. You'll find a lot of consistency from ship to ship in the Celebrity fleet in the type of venues that you find on board.

If you're looking for the most venues and amenities, or if you're the type of cruiser who only wants to be on the very newest ships, you'll gravitate toward Celebrity's Edge Class vessels.

If a smaller, more intimate ship is more your style, you probably want to take a look at the line's Millennium Class vessels. And if you have any interest in visiting the Galápagos — a once-in-a-lifetime-type destination — it's hard to beat the line's three small Galápagos vessels.

All staterooms as standard amenities offer bathrobes, tote bags, smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies), luxury bath toiletries, hairdryer, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), mini-bar, dual (110-220 V) power outlets. All staterooms are fitted with King-sized beds (hypoallergenic, highest-quality cashmere mattress / handcrafted by Matermoll, Italy) with deluxe bedding. Only single cabins are with Queen-sized beds. All staterooms have small touchscreens that control air-conditioning, lighting, shades/curtains, alarm (wake-up mode) and also have room service request icons. Each cabin is fitted with keyless room entry technology that uses digital keys (on smartphones), as well as standard keycards and RFID bands.

All cabin bathrooms are fitted with 1 electrical outlet (for a hairdryer). In the cabin's lounge area, USB ports are concealed in a desktop box. Near the vanity/dressing table are located the power outlets (the US and European plugs). All staterooms can be opened via a smartphone app (implementing facial recognition software).

The 24-hour room service menu includes cold and hot breakfast items (cereals, fruits, eggs, pancakes, also daily soups, salads, fast food (burgers, sandwiches, pizza, desserts, vegetable lasagna, steaks, quesadillas), also items from the main dining room's dinner menu. IMPORTANT: Celebrity Cruises charges USD 3,95 for late-night room service orders (between 11 pm and 6 am). This is an extra service charge implemented fleetwide (including on the Beyond ship). Passengers exempted from the new room service fee are the occupants of higher-grade cruise accommodations (Aqua-class, Concierge-class and all Suites).

IMPORTANT: The daily replenished bottled water perk for AquaClass cabins is no longer available. AquaClass guests, along with passengers in Sky Suite and Celebrity Suite accommodations, now receive (free of charge) two bottles of water (9 oz / 250 ml) only once - upon embarkation. Still, AquaClass passengers enjoy the beverage package perk, so they can take bottles of water for free at any of the ship bars. Know that Celebrity Cruises drink packages are not available on trans-oceanic (including Transatlantic) crossings.

Celebrity Cruises ship gratuities (automatic tipping per person per day) are as follows - standard cabins (Inside, Oceanview,, Balcony) USD 13,50 (up from USD 12,95), AquaClass-ConciergeClass cabins (USD 14 / up from USD 13,45), Suites (USD 17 /up from USD 16,45). Daily gratuities are shared by the ship's service staff (dining, housekeeping, cabin stewards, etc).

Each cabin is fitted with keyless room entry technology that uses digital keys (on smartphones), as well as standard keycards and RFID bands.
