Pulling from a lifetime of doo-wop, R&B, gospel, soul, and blues influences, and seasoned with dashes of humor and strife, Turner created a musical gumbo which was released on his 75th birthday. The first track, "Breakin' News, was a blues song finalist in the 2015 International Songwriting Competition.

A veteran musician of more than fifty years, Benny Turner has played everywhere from the Chitlin’ Circuit, to Europe, Japan, Australia, and all points in between.  Content to be a sideman in support of the many giants he has worked with, in 2010 the time came for Benny to take his rightful place in the spotlight on center stage, to the delight of blues fans worldwide. Born in Gilmer, Texas on October 27, 1939, Benny and his older brother, blues legend Freddie King, learned to play guitar from their mother, Ella Mae (King) Turner and her brothers Leon and Leonard King.  While Freddie was captivated by the guitar and wanted to be a performer, Benny just enjoyed the music and the opportunities to share it with the older brother he admired and adored.  The boys used to race home from school to catch the last few minutes of a radio show called “In the Groove,” where they heard the music of artists such as Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, Hank Williams, and T-Bone Walker.  After the family moved to Chicago in the early 50’s, what began as parallel exposure and experiences for the brothers ultimately diverged as Freddie went in one direction and Benny pursued other opportunities that came his way. While best known today as a bass player, Benny played guitar during many of his gigs in the early years, both locally in Chicago and on the road.  A last-minute request to sit in with Freddie’s band to cover for Robert Elem at the Squeeze Club gave Benny his first introduction to playing bass, with some “on-the-job training” at its finest!   During the late 50’s Benny played guitar with gospel group The Kindly Shepherds, and is on a handful of their recordings for the Nashboro label (guitar and background vocals) from that time.  He was also playing bass with Freddie King at legendary Chicago clubs such as the Squeeze Club and Walton’s Corner.  While at Walton’s Corner, Benny met R&B singer Dee Clark, and was invited to join him on the road.  Within a few days, his first exposure to touring and life on the road began, at none other than The Apollo Theater in New York, and continued at other legendary theaters including The Uptown Theater in Philadelphia, The Howard Theater in Washington DC and The Regal Theater in Chicago.  Benny played in the band with Phil Upchurch, and cherishes their friendship to this day.  It was an exciting time, during which Dee had his Billboard hit “Raindrops” (1961).

Who Sang It First

Who Sang It First is Benny Turner’s adaptation of Jim George’s original song, Black Is Beautiful, which George describes as his “tribute to all the black pioneers and artists who have paved the way, invented the music and enriched all our lives.” 

In Turner’s version, he pays homage to the legendary blues musicians who have strongly influenced today’s music. 

Appropriately, the song was recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, with veteran session musicians Clayton Ivey on keys and Will McFarlane on guitar.

Benny Turner

Benny Turner and his older brother Freddie grew up in Gilmer, Texas where they were exposed to country blues and the music of T-Bone Walker. Once the family moved to Chicago’s West Side his brother began to make a name for himself as Freddie King. While Freddie became a guitar god Turner backed him up on bass. Turner left Freddie to play with R & B singer Dee Clark and with the gospel group the Soul Stirrers. He re-joined Freddie and played bass with him until his untimely passing in 1976.

After Freddie died Turner spent eight years with Mighty Joe Young. Turner then settled in New Orleans and for the next twenty years gigged with Marva Wright, the Blues Queen of New Orleans; until her passing in 2010.

That same year Turner released his first album “ Blue and Not So Blue ”. On it Turner honored his late brother by not including any lead guitarists. Solely concentrating on his singing and songwriting the album included guest artists Dr. John, Charles Brown, Davell Crawford and Marva Wright. In 2012 Turner’s follow-up recording was a “ Tribute to My Brother Freddie King ”.

“ Journey ” is only Turner’s third album. Once again Turner does all the lead singing and plays bass and guitar. Jeffrey “Jellybean” Alexander plays drums on all of the tracks. Turner utilizes three excellent rhythm guitarists; Marc Stone, Charles Moore, and Derwin “Big D” Perkins. Keiko Komaki plays keyboards. The horn section includes Jason Mingledorff, sax; and Barney Floyd, trumpet. The background vocalists are Deanna Bernard and Ellen Smith.

The opening track “ Breakin’ News ” includes everyone but Perkins. It is the first of ten great new originals from Turner. On, “ Don’t You Ride My Mule ”, Turner sings “if you sneak into my barnyard, leave my Mule alone”. Guesting are Josh Paxton, keyboards; Mark Leuron, trumpet; and “Sunpie” Barnes, harmonica.

“ I Wanna Make It Right ” features all of the above except that it’s Perkins on rhythm guitar. I am impressed with Turner’s songwriting.

“ My Mother’s Blues ” is a guitar instrumental in the Piedmont tradition. Turner is inspired by a melody that his mom used to play. Tom Worrell sits in on the keys.

“ I Wanna’ Give It to You Baby ” again features “Sunpie” a mainstay of the New Orleans harmonica and Zydeco scene. It doesn’t take much to identify with this one. “ My Uncle’s Blues ” draws on Turner’s reverence for his uncle Leon King.

The album closes with a song that is a bit more topical. “What’s Wrong with the World Today ” is a reflection on life; this time “Sunpie” is part of the background chorus.

Since first listening to this album I have become a fan of Turner. It’s time for our sidemen to step out front and he does us justice. I love Benny Turner.

Benny Turner brings us his third work, with mostly own compositions and some impressive dark versions he learned from his family when he was only a boy, he has included as a tribute to his family In fact, their parents and uncles often met in his home back porch to sing and play blues and this deeply influenced both Benny and his brother, the unique, incomparable and unrepeatable Freddie King In the mid-fifties the family moved from Gilmer, Texas to Chicago, where Benny began a successful career as bass player in the band of his brother Freddie From the death of King in 1976, Benny has developed an intense and exciting career in the blues world This album is full of virtues, with a magnificent repertoire and a bewildering performing, besides a huge musical quality plus stunning arrangements and production Now his music includes other rhythms like gospel, soul and rhythm and blues but, undoubtedly, Benny writes and plays blues because he has lived and carried blues in his shoulder from childhood This album really proves it, as it is the work of a living legend of west side Chicago blues history

Nola Blue Records celebrates 10 years!

A soulful selection of musical milestones from the start of it all to the heart of it all.

Nola Blue Records imprint began with the 2014 release of 'Journey' by Benny Turner. In the ensuing years, the catalog has grown to 25 titles, including Turner's homage to his brother, the late Freddie King, 'My Brother's Blues,' as well as albums from blues legacy artists Cash McCall (RIP) and Frank Bey (RIP). 'All My Dues Are Paid,' the label's second release by Bey, received a posthumous GRAMMY nomination for traditional blues album of the year (2020). Artists and projects that have received Blues Music Awards and nominations include Benny Turner, Frank Bey, John Németh, Clarence Spady, Trudy Lynn, and The Love Light Orchestra. Nola Blue Records was named "Record Label of the Year" by The Josie Awards in September 2020.

It is almost inconceivable that a decade has passed since I first began this labor of love, guided purely by passion and without any industry knowledge to light my path. I’ve enjoyed some incredible achievements, endured some devastating disappointments and had seemingly countless experiences and emotions along the way. I hope that in some way I’ve been able to have as much of a positive impact on the blues community as the blues has always had on me. Heartfelt thanks to Benny Turner for trusting and believing in me at the onset of this journey and for his endless support and encouragement; to my family for their patience and understanding of many long days, nights and weekends spent building my dreams into reality; and to Betsie Brown, Debra Clark and Tyler Faulkner who have all been instrumental in supporting the growth of Nola Blue.
