American Airlines' pet policy: Here’s how to fly with your cat or dog

Flying with a pet can be complicated. Each airline has its own guidelines, and the devil is really in the details.

In this story, we'll cover the most important details you need to know about the American Airlines pet policy, including the American Airlines pet cargo policy.

American Airlines' pet policy

American Airlines only allows passengers to carry on cats and dogs; no other types of pets are allowed. According to the American Airlines pet policy , you can bring a cat or dog along (assuming they meet the size and age requirements) on most flights up to 12 hours or flights to or from the following locations:

• The 48 contiguous United States.
• The United States and Canada.
• Puerto Rico.
• St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
• St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

American Airlines charges a $125 charge for each one-way itinerary where your pet accompanies you in the cabin. You'll also incur an additional $125 charge on any one-way itinerary within the U.S. with more than a four-hour voluntary stopover. You might be able to recoup some or all of the fees if you charge it on a credit card that offers airline fee credits .

Additionally, the American Airlines pet policy prohibits pets from traveling in first or business class on the following aircraft types:

You'll want to make sure you book your pet early as part of your reservation. Unlike the United Airlines pet policy , American Airlines publishes the number of pets allowed in the cabin on each flight. So, we know American Airlines only allows up to seven kennels on its mainline flights (although service animals don't count toward this limit).

Meanwhile, American will only accept five kennels per flight — and a maximum of one carrier in first class — for American Eagle flights. While American has largely eliminated change fees , you'll be stuck rescheduling your trip if your particular flight has already reached its cap for in-cabin animals.

Lastly, American Airlines considers a pet carrier a carry-on item. So, if you're bringing along a pet, you'll only be permitted a personal item along with your pet carrier. Any other bags will need to be checked, with the appropriate fees applied.

American Airlines' pet carrier requirements

The American Airlines pet policy allows for both hard-sided and soft-sided carriers. Hard-sided carriers have different size restrictions based on whether your flight is on American Airlines or American Eagle, American's regional carrier.

Hard-sided kennels can be no larger than 19 inches by 13 inches by 9 inches on mainline flights and no larger than 16 inches by 12 inches by 8 inches on American Eagle flights. However, the American Airlines pet policy recommends soft-sided carriers, which can be no larger than 18 inches by 11 inches by 11 inches on both mainline and American Eagle flights.

Lastly, the American pet policy states that the animal must be able to stand up and turn around in the pet carrier .

American Airlines' pet cargo policy

American Airlines will only allow a pet to travel in cargo if you are a member of the U.S. military on active duty or a U.S. State Department Foreign Service employee traveling on official orders. There are several additional requirements for a pet traveling in cargo which you can find on the American Airlines website .

The only way to use the American Airlines pet policy is to call reservations to add a pet to your reservation. An agent will be able to help you with adding a pet to your record, assuming there is still capacity for kennels on your preferred flights.

When flying with a furry friend, you’ll encounter various rules and restrictions, so it’s important to understand the requirements that apply to you. American Airlines’ animal transportation program has numerous fees and rules to keep in mind, with many intricacies that can impact whether or how you’re allowed to travel with your pet. We’ve broken down these policies into a simple, user-friendly guide.

You can travel with your pet in the cabin when traveling to these destinations:

• Between the U.S. and Canada
• Puerto Rico
• Within the 48 contiguous United States

There is a $150 charge per kennel , which is waived for service animals.

If you’re traveling with a pet in the cabin, you’re required to pay a pet transport fee and also have a kennel for the animal, which must be able to slide under the seat in front of you. This kennel will not count as your carry-on item, so you can bring additional baggage on board, such as your suitcase.

Any pet that’s too large to fly in the cabin won’t be able to fly . You can only check oversized pets if you’re part of the military or foreign service on orders.

If you’re traveling with a hard-sided kennel, it must meet these dimensions (length + width + height):

• Mainline Flights on American : 19 x 13 x 9 inches (48 x 33 x 22 centimeters)
• Regional Flights on American Eagle : 16 x 12 x 8 inches (40 x 30 x 20 centimeters)

If you’re traveling with a soft-sided kennel, it must be smaller than 18 x 11 x 11 inches (46 x 28 x 28 centimeters).

American recommends traveling with a soft-sided kennel rather than a hard one. You’ll need to shimmy it under the seat in front of you, which can be more difficult with a rigid object. Seat dimensions vary by aircraft, so American’s reservations line can help answer any questions and ensure the carrier fits.

Sherpa, a brand of pet carriers, also sells an airline-approved American Airlines Pet Carrier :

Pets must fit comfortably inside the kennel, which must be secure, padded, and made of water-repellant material with ventilation on at least 3 sides. The pet carrier — and your pet — must stay under the seat in front of you for the entire flight.

If you’re flying on American’s Airbus A321T plane, the premium A321 flying cross-country (mainly from JFK and BOS to LAX, SFO, and SNA), there is a specific compartment in the forward cabin for pets during take-off, landing, and turbulence. You must store your pet in the compartment during those designated times, but you can take the carrier back to your seat during other phases of the flight.

If you’re flying in business or first class, you won’t be able to take your pet as a carry-on on the Boeing 777-200, 777-300, 787-8, or 787-9. If you must fly on one of these aircraft, plan on sitting in the Main Cabin, where you can slide your pet under the seat in front of you.

No matter the type of pet or aircraft, American won’t accept any sedated pet. While sedation may calm your animal and make the travel experience easier, there are potential health complications that American doesn’t want to be responsible for.

If transporting your pet is important to you, always have a backup plan in case of foul weather, cancellations, or other disruptions en route.

Service Animals on American Airlines

Service animals are allowed on American Airlines, but only for these circumstances:

• Mobility impairments
• Post-traumatic stress disorder
• Visual impairments

You’ll need to complete a Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Transportation form , which signals to American Airlines that your animal is trained to perform the functions it needs to.

American Airlines does not allow any animals in training, emotional support animals, or comfort animals. These may travel as pets, not service animals.

Your animal must be clean, well-behaved, and ready to travel at your feet or in your lap. The airport ticketing staff will make the final decision about whether your animal is accepted. No animal can be placed in the exit row, protrude into the aisle, occupy a seat, or eat from any tray table.

American Airlines doesn’t accept checked animals for most passengers. To check a pet, you must be a member of the U.S. military or the U.S. State Department Foreign Service, both on active orders. There is a $200 kennel fee (or $150 if flying to or from Brazil).

If you meet these qualifications, American has several requirements:

• You must contact American Airlines’ reservations department at least 48 hours before travel to let them know you intend to bring the animal onboard.
• When arriving at the airport, you must physically check in at a ticket counter and present your U.S. military or foreign service orders.
• American won’t accept animals more than 4 hours before the flight , but you’ll still want to leave plenty of time to check your animal and get through security. You’ll need to have your pet checked in a minimum of 2 hours prior to departure.
• The ticketing agent will have you complete a checklist with them, and you’ll need to provide a certificate of health.

This certificate of health must be issued by a veterinarian and needs to be:

• Within 10 days of your travel
• Within 60 days of your return (when traveling on the same ticket)
• Within 10 days of your return (when traveling on a separate ticket)

It’s worth noting that American has several temperature-related restrictions:

• From May 1 through September 30 , you cannot check a pet through Las Vegas (LAS), Palm Springs (PSP), Phoenix (PHX), or Tucson (TUS).
• For cold weather, no destination along the route can be below 45 degrees.

Pets that don’t qualify as carry-on or checked pets can travel in the cargo hold with PetEmbark through American Airlines Cargo.

First, you must determine if you have an eligible breed or type of pet, ensure the pet is healthy enough to fly, and meet certain requirements. Then, ensure you have the right kennel for your animal as American Airlines doesn’t provide kennels.

You must file a request to transport you r animal at most 10 days before departure (and at least 24 hours before departure).

Your animal must be dropped off at specific American Airlines Cargo drop-off locations within 4 hours of departure. These are usually located away from the terminal buildings. You’ll need to attach a bag of food to the kennel and ensure the animal has been fed and provided water within 4 hours prior to the flight. This will also be an opportunity to recheck temperatures along the flight route. Once this is done, you’ll leave your animal with the staff, and you’ll be able to track its progress along the way.

You can pick up the animal at the destination American Airlines Cargo facility as long as you have 2 forms of ID and the waybill. American Airlines Cargo facilities are only open during certain hours, so be sure to call before you go.

American Airlines has several rules and regulations to keep your pet happy and safe as you travel. When traveling with a pet, it’s always a good idea to purchase your tickets well in advance of your anticipated travel date, have all appropriate documentation ready, and be ready to follow agent instructions once you get to the airport.

In-Cabin Pet Policy

If your dog or cat meets the requirements listed in American Airlines pet policy to travel in-cabin, you will need an approved airline pet carrier . The carrier must have a waterproof bottom, have room for your pet to stand up and turn around, must fasten securly and have adequate ventilation. Maximum size: 18in x 11in x 11in. (soft-sided carriers can be slightly higher.)

The pet carrier will not count as a carry on item according to new AA regulations.

Pets Allowed:

Small dogs or cats.

Age Requirements:

Pets must be at least 8 weeks old to travel in the cabin.

Route Restrictions

American does not permit pets in the cabin on transatlantic or transpacific flights. Pets are permitted to fly in the cabin to most destinations in the United States (excluding Hawaii) and Canada, Mexico, Central America, Alaska, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. Croix. Flights cannot be longer than 11 1/2 hours.

Pets traveling in the cabin are not allowed to or from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela, Hawaii or EU countries. Service/assistance dogs only are allowed in the cabin on flights to Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Aircraft Restrictions

Carry-on pets are not permitted in First or Business Class on the following aircraft: 757-L, 757-EW, 767, 777-200, 777-300, 787-8, 787-9, Airbus A330-200 or A330-300.

Carrier Requirements

Carrier measurements will vary depending on the aircraft serving the route. There is one pet permitted per passenger unless you are carrying a mother cat or dog with her unweaned litter.

Two pets of the same size and species (generally puppies, kittens or toy dogs) may be allowed in one pet carrier, provided there is adequate room in the carrier for them to stand up and turn around. The total weight of the pets and carrier must not exceed 20 pounds. Birds are not permitted.

You will check in at the passenger counter as animals are not checked in at curbside. A fee will be collected at the time of check in.

American Airlines Pet Fee for In-Cabin

The fee for flying your small dog or cat in the cabin will be $150USD. You must check in at the passenger counter as animals are not checked in at curbside.

If your pet is a service dog, there will be no charge for the flight.

Forms Required

No health certificate is required for pets traveling in the cabin on flights within the United States. Department of Transportation forms are required for service dogs.

Service Dogss

Only trained service animals can fly in the cabin and you will need to complete and submit the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Service Animal Air Transportation form before your trip. If you are traveling with an animal that does not qualify as trained service dog, it may be transported as a regular pet.

Checked Baggage Pet Policy

American Airlines is currently not offering checked baggage service for live animals with the exception of active-duty U.S. Military and U.S. State Department Foreign Service personnel traveling on official orders.

If your pet is too large to fit under the seat, it is an animal other than a dog or cat, or if it is a very long flight, American may transport your pet in the cargo section of the aircraft according to its regulations. This section of the cargo department has the same temperature and pressure as the passenger cabin. Live animals will not be transported in the cargo hold of the following aircraft: Airbus 319, Airbus 320, Airbus 321, Airbus 321S and Airbus 321H. Live animals are not transported on Air Wisconsin.

Larger dogs and cats. Birds are not permitted. Flight must be less than 12 hours. Up to 2 pets per passenger may travel as checked baggage.

Route Restrictions:

Pets traveling to Hawaii may travel as checked baggage through Honolulu. Pets traveling to the United Kingdom must fly as air cargo.

Checked pets cannot travel to/through/from Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas or Palm Springs from May 1 - September 30.

Checked baggage service is not offered on flights to Japan.

Checked pets cannot travel on A321, A321S, A321H, A320, A319 aircraft and all flights operated by Air Wisconsin.

Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel. If you are returning to your country of origin on the same ticket, the health certificate is valid for 60 days.

When flying as checked baggage, you will check in your dog, cat not more than 4 hours ahead of flight time at the passenger ticket counter at which time you will pay the fee for transport. Pet owners are encouraged to check in early as the number of pets per flight is limited and on a first come-first served basis. There is a maximum of 2 pets per passenger permitted to travel as checked baggage.

Flights cannot be longer than 12 hours. Pets must not be sedated or they will not be accepted.

American Airlines Pet Fee for Checked Baggage

American Airlines charges a flat fee of $200 ($150 for travel to or from Brazil) for larger dogs and cats flying as accompanied checked baggage.

Temperature Restrictions

Pets will not be accepted as checked baggage or air cargo when actual or forecasted temperatures are above 85°F (29.4°C) or below 45°F (7.2°C) at any airport on the itinerary. Pets may be accepted at temperatures below 45°F with an acclimation certificate , however, no pet will be transported at temperatures lower than 20°F (-6.6°C). American Airlines has a 24/7 help desk to assist with rescheduling pets when temperatures do not fall within this range.

Between May 1 and September 30, live animals will not be permitted in the cargo hold on flights to, from or transiting Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas and Palm Springs due to summer temperatures.

Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel.

Crate Requirements

Maximum size crate: max 63" high on B767, B777 and B787. 40" high on B757 and 28" high on B737 and A330 aircraft. Metal hardware should be used to fasten the top and bottom halves of your pet' crate together. Click here for crate requirements .

Two dogs or cats between 8 weeks and 6 months old can travel in the same crate if they are of the same species, a similar size and weigh less than 20 pounds each.

Manifest (Air) Cargo Pet Policies

American Airlines Cargo serves the continental United States, Honolulu, Puerto Rico, Canada and international locations where flight time is less than 12 hours. Pet owners have 2 transport services to choose from: Priority Parcel Service (domestic up to 100 lbs.) and ExpediteFS (international).

Pets Allowed

American Airlines will ship warm blooded animals such as dogs, cats, birds, primates and some other animals. Cold-blooded animals must be packaged in accordance with the IATA Live Animal Regulations and must include heat or cold packs, as needed. American Cargo will not ship dangerous or offensive dogs or other animals, unhealthy animals or pets that will be banned by the country of destination. No venomous snakes or lizards will be transported.

If your pet is traveling to or through the United States, the use of a professional freight forwarder, IPATA agent, or customs broker with an established business relationship with the airline will be required. Flights cannot be longer than 12 hours.

All pets traveling to or from London Heathrow or Manchester must use the services of an agent. Agents can be found at IPATA.org. If you are departing from the United States, we can assist you with the booking. Please send an email to [email protected].

No live animals will be permitted on flights over 12 hours.

American Airlines will not transport animals on the following aircraft types: Airbus 319, 320, 321, 321S, 321H and 32B. Routes that are excluded from this restriction include New York JFK to/from LAX and San Francisco (SFO).

Reservations

Reservations can be made up to 10 days in advance.

Pets must be at least 8 weeks old and weaned for domestic or international travel.

Health Certificate issued within 10 days of travel. Also required are proof of vaccinations and pet passport documents for the country your pet is traveling to (international travel only).

Household pets such as dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, pot-belly pigs, rabbits, rodents and cold-blooded animals can be checked in at passenger ticket counters, baggage service offices and dedicated Global Priority Shipping Centers. You will pay for your pet's transport when your pet is dropped off.

Sedated pets will not be accepted.

American Airlines will no longer accept Series 100 (small) pet crates in the cargo hold.

Two animals less than 6 months and 20 pounds each may travel in the same crate as long as they are of the same species and both animals are less than 20 pounds (9 kg). For animals traveling to the United Kingdom, a maximum of two adult animals (of comparable size, up to 20 pounds (9 kg) each (and who are known to eachother) may be transported in the same container.

A breed verification form will be required for all dogs and cats flying American Airlines in the cargo hold, whether as checked baggage or air cargo.

American Airlines Just Made It Easier and Cheaper to Fly With a Pet — What to Know

The airline will now allow travelers to bring a full-size carry-on bag with them for no extra charge when they book a carry-on pet.

American Airlines is making it easier to travel with pets, changing its policy to allow travelers to bring a free carry-on bag in addition to their furry friend.

The airline will now allow travelers to bring a full-size carry-on bag with them for no extra charge when they book a carry-on pet, American confirmed to Travel + Leisure . Previously, the airline counted the pet as the carry-on bag and travelers were not permitted to bring another roller bag with them.

The change went into effect on March 28. 

Passengers flying with a carry-on pet, however, will not be able to bring a large carry-on item that fits in the overhead bin and a personal item at the same time, and must choose one or the other.

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” an airline spokesperson told T+L.

American charges $150 per kennel for carry-on pets, according to the airline . Carry-on pets are allowed on most flights up to 12 hours within the United States, between the U.S. and Canada, to Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, and St. Thomas.

Pets brought in the cabin must be small enough to “fit comfortably” inside a closed carrier and fit under the seat in front. The airline recommends travelers use a soft-sided collapsible kennel.

Other airlines similarly restrict passengers who are traveling with carry-on pets from bringing a large carry-on bag. Delta Air Lines, for example, counts the pet’s kennel as a passenger’s carry-on bag and only allows travelers to bring an additional personal item, according to the airline .

Like American’s new policy, Southwest allows passengers traveling with a carry-on pet to bring either a personal item or a carry-on item with them in addition to their companion.

When flying with pets , travelers should stock the carrier with plenty of necessities like water or treats and check in for a flight as late as possible.

• The kennel is specifically made for animal carriage and does not exceed 19in x 13in x 9in (length x width x height).
• Your pet has all necessary health documents required by your destination (see below for more information).

Does my pet qualify for travel as checked baggage?

Pets that meet the following qualifications can travel as checked baggage:

• Your itinerary does not include travel to the United Kingdom.
• Your pet can comfortably remain in its kennel for the entire flight.
• Kennels for checked pets must have a water container with outside access for filling, in case a delay occurs as well as a small bag of food for a 24-hour period attached to the top of the container.
• Checked pets can not be accepted when the ground temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any location on the itinerary. It is best to call ahead.
• The kennel meets all requirements (see below for more information) and does not exceed 40in x 27in x 30in (length x width x height) and weight of animal and kennel combined does not exceed 100 lb.
• You are not traveling on a flight longer than 12 hours.
• Series 700 kennels are not allowed on any American Airlines planes.
• Series 500 kennels are not allowed on Boeing MD-80 aircraft.
• Checked pets do not require a reservation. Still, they will not be accepted more than four hours prior to scheduled flight time and are accepted on a first-come basis.

Does my pet qualify to be shipped as cargo?

If your pet does not meet the requirements for travel in the cabin or as checked baggage, or if you would like your pet to travel unaccompanied, contact American Airlines Cargo for more information.

What are the fees associated with pet transport?

• Fee for animal in the passenger cabin to/from United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean: $125 one way
• Fee for animal checked as baggage to/from United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean: $175 one way
• Fee for animal traveling to other destinations in the cabin or as checked baggage: Contact American Airlines Reservations

What are the kennel requirements?

In addition to the size and weight maximums, the USDA and American Airlines require that kennels meet the following requirements:

• Kennels must be constructed of wood, metal, plastic or a similar material, leak-proof, escape proof and door must fasten securely and need ventilation on 2-sides in addition to the door. Kennels must also have a water container with outside access for filling, in case a delay occurs.
• Collapsible Kennels (those which can fold down flat) cannot be accepted due to the risk of collapse during transport.
• Separate food and water dishes must be securely attached inside the kennel and accessible without opening. Customer must also attach a small bag of food for a 24-hour period to the top of the container.
• The customer is required to secure rigid plastic kennels with releasable cable ties (see example at right) attached to all four corners. American Airlines will provide the ties to the customer at no cost.
• The maximum size for checked kennels is a series 500 kennel with the following dimensions: 40” long x 27” wide x 30” high. However, this size kennel is not accepted on the Boeing MD-80 (S80). Kennels checked on MD-80s must be able to fit through the cargo door while remaining in an upright position. MD-80 cargo doors are 29” high x 53” wide.
• Series 700 kennels are not allowed on any aircraft.
• The maximum weight of a checked pet and kennel (combined) cannot exceed 100 lbs.
• Have labels with the words "Live Animal" in letters at least 1-inch tall on the crate's top and on at least one side.
• Have upright arrow labels indicating kennel's correct position.

What health documentation is required?

While American Airlines does not require a health certificate for your animal to travel domestically, some States do require health documents. As it is the passenger's responsibility to be aware of all regulations, you should consult your veterinarian and the Department of Agriculture to ensure that your animal will comply with all requirements. Are there any other restrictions?

• American Airlines can refuse to transport an animal due to illness, aggressive behavior, poor kenneling, or extreme temperatures at origin, transfer, or destination airports.

This guidance is not intended to replace the Conditions of carriage, which covers all of your rights and responsibilities as a passenger.

Conditions of carriage

Your ticket

We sell 2 types of tickets – refundable and non-refundable:

If you booked at least 2 days before departure, you can get a full refund within 24 hours from the time you bought your ticket, no matter if it's refundable or non-refundable.

• A refundable ticket allows you to change or cancel your flight without a fee.
• A non-refundable ticket may cost less, but if you need to make changes you'll be charged a change fee and any difference in fare. If you buy a Basic Economy fare, changes are not allowed.

There is a fee to check bags with some exceptions. Make sure to read our checked bag policy before you travel.

Checked bag policy

Our Basic Economy fare is for the no-frills, price-conscious traveler who wants to get from point A to point B as affordably as possible. This fare includes a seat in the Main Cabin but has some restrictions.

Basic Economy rules

For customers who don't mind paying extra for more comfort, we offer Premium Economy, First and Business, as well as seats in the Main Cabin with more legroom and Preferred Seats which are favorably located throughout the cabin but have standard legroom.

Preparing to travel

Being prepared is the best way to ensure smooth travel. Every airport is different, so do a little research if it's your first time flying to or from a city. You'll need a valid photo ID accepted by the TSA (like a driver’s license or other government-issued ID) for domestic travel and a valid passport or visa, and any travel documents required by your international destination.

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other accepted ID, like a valid passport or U.S. military ID, to fly within the U.S. REAL ID-compliant cards generally have a star at the top. If you’re unsure, contact your state driver’s license agency on how to get a REAL ID-compliant card.

TSA won’t allow you to pass through security checkpoints at the airport if your ID doesn’t comply.

The TSA Secure Flight program requires us to collect this information when you book including the:

• Name as it appears on the government-issued ID you travel with
• Date of birth
• Redress Number (optional)

We may cancel your trip if we don't have this information at least 72 hours before departure.

You can check in on aa.com and in the app beginning 24 hours before departure. All airports have minimum check-in times. If you're not checked in by the minimum check-in time, you may lose your seat.

In most cities, you must be checked in:

• At least 45 minutes before scheduled departure, for flights within the U.S.
• At least 60 minutes before scheduled departure, for flights to or from airports outside of the U.S.

Some airports require you to check in earlier.

American Airlines app

In general, you're allowed 1 bag and 1 personal item:

• Your bag must fit in the sizer at the airport.
• Your personal item must fit under the seat in front of you.

In the event the bins are full and you have to gate-check a bag, put any fragile or valuable items like keys, medication or computers in the personal item you bring on the plane.

There are additional carry-on restrictions for certain aircraft and airports.

Carry-on bags

If you’re a family traveling with children under 15, and do not already have seats assigned, our system will search for seats together automatically before the day of departure. We’ll try our best to keep you together, but if seats are limited, we’ll assign seats so children under 15 are next to at least 1 adult.

Traveling with children and infants

We care about our four-legged customers too. Cats and small dogs can travel in the cabin, but they must stay in an approved carrier that fits under the seat. Larger dogs can travel in the cargo hold of some planes. There is a fee to travel with your pet.

Traveling with pets

Service animals are welcome at no charge if they meet the requirements. The animal must fit on your lap, at your feet or under your seat, and cannot block the aisle.

Emotional support animals require specific documentation; please review the requirements before travel.

Service animals

For everyone's safety on board, some common items are restricted by the TSA and FAA. Be sure you know what you can carry on and what you can check in your bags before you go to the airport.

Hazardous materials

We don't transport hazardous materials, except for small amounts of dry ice.

Restricted items

You can travel with firearms in checked bags only. Firearms must be declared to an agent at check-in. There are other rules that apply.

On occasion, there are more checked-in customers than seats. When this happens, our team gets involved as early as possible to find volunteers to change flights in exchange for compensation.

When we don’t have enough volunteers, we have to choose customers to change flights involuntarily, or deny boarding. If this happens, we'll follow the DOT's compensation rules and get those customers on the next possible flight. We will not involuntarily remove a revenue passenger who has already boarded in order to give a seat to another passenger.

At the gate

You must be at the gate and ready to board the plane:

• 15 minutes before departure on domestic flights
• 30 minutes before departure for international flights

Be sure to check your boarding pass for boarding times. If you're not at the gate in time, your seat may be given to a standby passenger.

The doors close at least 10 minutes before departure. Once the door is shut, it will not be reopened unless there is health, safety or security issue.

We board in groups; check your boarding pass for your boarding group. We offer early boarding to customers who need special assistance or more time to board, along with families with children under 2 years who ask to board early.

Strollers should be checked at the gate before boarding and picked up after your flight at the gate, free of charge.

Wheelchairs can be gate-checked and picked up after your flight at the gate, free of charge. We are available to help you to and from your seat once you check your wheelchair.

On the plane

Welcome aboard! Anything you carried on must fit in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you. If the bins are full or your bag is too big we'll help gate-check it. Musical instruments count as a carry-on and must fit safely in the bin, under the seat or in a closet (unless you paid for an extra seat).

Have a nut allergy? Though we don't serve peanuts, we do serve food that may contain other types of nuts and customers may carry on peanuts. We're unable to make special accommodations or provide nut-free zones on board, so we strongly encourage you to take all necessary medical precautions before flying.

And finally, our crewmembers are here to ensure a safe and pleasant flying experience for you and everyone onboard your flight. Please let them know if you have any questions and be sure to comply with their instructions, which are designed to keep you and everyone on board safe and comfortable.

American Airlines has a strict pet policy in place so it’s best to know ahead of time what you can and cannot do/bring when flying with your furry friend. This detailed pet guide discusses everything you need to know while flying with a pet, or Emotional Support Animal (ESA) or a Service Dog on American Airlines.

Flying In-Cabin with Your Pet

American Airlines does let pets into the cabin to travel with you, but with certain stipulations.

Firstly, the pets have to be either a cat or a dog. No other species of animals are allowed. Regardless of whether owners wish to take ESAs or pets into the cabin with them!

Secondly, the size of the pet matters, as both the pet and the carrier together cannot weigh more than twenty pounds. Animals larger than this, unless they are service animals, cannot travel in-cabin.

The pets must also stay in this carrier, with the door closed and under the seat during the duration of the flight. There are also certain routes that no pets are allowed in the cabin, no matter how small and contained. These routes include flights to or from Hawaii, all Transatlantic flights, and flights to Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, or Venezuela.

Due to the fact that the pet and carrier together must both weigh less than twenty pounds, and fit under the seat, the carrier can be no larger than 23” long, 13” wide, and 9” high. Your pet must be able to stand up, lay down, and turn around in the carrier of this size. There is also a limit of seven animals per cabin per flight, and this is first come, first serve.

Assuming you and your pet meets all of the above requirements, you will have to pay a fee of 125 dollars per pet carrier in the cabin. This fee is not a round trip and will be required each way. Curbside check-in or self-service are not allowed when traveling with a pet, so normal check-in will be required.

Flying In-Cabin with an Emotional Support Animal or a Service Animal

Do you Qualify?

American Airlines  allows you to travel in the cabin with a service animal or  emotional support animal , as long as you meet certain guidelines.

First and foremost,  the pet will travel with you at no charge as long as service animal or psychiatric service animal and are able to fit either on your lap, at your feet, or under the seat, and that they will not in any way block the aisle. For safety regulation reasons, if your pet blocks the aisle in any way, you, unfortunately, will not be able to bring them into the cabin to travel with you.

Additionally, you and your pet cannot sit in the emergency exit row, due to the fact that if there is an emergency, your pet cannot agree to follow the instructions required of those seated in that row.

Before 1/11/2021: Assuming your pet meets all the above guidelines, you will then need a LMHP’s letter in order to bring your support animal . The letter must clearly state that you have a disability that is either emotional or mental, and the disorder must be officially recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Further, the LMHP’s letter must show that it would be detrimental to you to not have your emotional support animal during travel, and/or for when you arrive at your destination, and finally they need proof that they are in fact  a licensed mental health professional or medical doctor , including information from their licenses such as type, date issued, and state-issued, and they must state that you are their patient.

Documents as required by American Airlines to fly with an ESA

• Mental Health Professional Form (like above – ESA letter)
• Behavior Guidelines
• Veterinary Health Form
• Animal Sanitation During 8+ Hours Form (only required if your flight is scheduled to be over 8 hours)

All of this information will be verified, so American Airlines requires that you submit this documentation at least 48 hours before your flight, otherwise you might have to check the animal in a carrier, and they will not be allowed to travel with you as you would like them to, in the cabin.

Like in cabin travel, pets traveling in American Airlines Pet Cargo are subject to fees. For this kind of travel, the American Airlines pet fee is 175 dollars per pet carrier each way.

After 1/11/2021: According to American Airlines, “Starting February 1, 2021, only trained service animals can fly in the cabin and you’ll need to complete and submit the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Service Animal Air Transportation form before your trip. If you’re traveling with an animal that doesn’t qualify as a trained service animal, it may be transported as a pet.”

Carry-on pets, service and emotional support animals may fly in the cabin if they meet the requirements. If your pet is too large to fit in the cabin, please contact American Airlines Cargo.”

Before 2021: Unlike  Southwest Airlines , American Airlines actually allow pets in the cargo hold. Pets that do not qualify for in-cabin travel can be checked the same way you would check your baggage, and will be traveling in the pet cargo hold. Like in cabin travel, cargo travel is restricted to cats and dogs only and is first come first serve, as there is a limit to the number of pets on any given flight.

To avoid issues check in early, but also be aware that checked pets are not accepted four hours prior to your scheduled flight.

American Airlines also cares about pet safety, and because of that, no pets will be allowed to travel in cargo if there are extreme temperatures of either hot or cold. Pets also must have enough room to stand, to turn around, to sit, and to lie down in their carriers. For cargo carriers have to be very sturdy, and made of either wood, metal, plastic, or other hard and leak-proof material.

Carriers must also have plenty of ventilation, and water containers that can be refilled without opening the carrier, in case there is a delay and the animals need to be given water.

Kennels, or carriers, cannot be bigger than 40” long, 27” wide, and 30” high on a standard flight. Some flights with smaller planes must have smaller carriers. For example, the Boeing MD-80 has a smaller cargo door, and kennels cannot be larger than 29” high and 53” wide in order to fit through the doors. Any and all pet carriers cannot weigh more than 100 pounds with the combined weight of the carrier and the pet.

Whether you are using American Airlines pet travel through in cabin or through cargo, there are certain points to remember. 

The limit is also two pets per ticketed passenger for checked pets. All pet travel comes with an American airlines pet fee, although the in-cabin travel is slightly more affordable. It is advisable to always arrive early when checking in pets, but important to remember you can’t check in with pets more than four hours before your flight.

With proper preparedness, American Airlines pet policy will keep your pet safe, and make sure you, and your beloved animal, arrive safely and soundly in your destination.

Frequently Asked Questions about Emotional Support Animals

What is an emotional support animal 'certification' do i need to get my esa 'certified'.

No, you do not need to get your Emotional Support Animal certified. Frankly, it’s not possible.

Like the misconception of registering your ESA into some database online, Emotional Support Animal certification is just a piece of paper with no real use.

To be a real Emotional Support Animal owner, you must have an ESA letter awarded by a therapist after you have taken an assessment of your qualification to own one.

Many sites, as well as people, claim they sell official Emotional Support Dog certification or offer legitimate Emotional Support Animal registration, but remember all you need is an ESA letter from a LMHP.

Are Emotional Support Animal Registration Sites Legitimate?

We’re often asked if ESA registration sites are real.

The answer is NO.

If you see a site claiming to be a “national service animal registry,” “emotional support dog registration,” “official service dog registry,” "US emotional support dog registry," or a “US service dog registry” they’re handing out false information and only wanting you to pay for a “fake” document.

Do emotional support animals require training?

Unlike service animals, HUD does not require any special training for ESAs. However, we strongly encourage you make sure your pet understands basic commands, behaves well in public setting and is trained for travelling if you chose take it on a flight.

Does my dog need an emotional support animal vest to travel or live with me?

There is no law stating your ESA must wear a vest . Many ESA owners chose to still go with a vest to make their ESA easily identifiable.

Is the ESA letter all I need to become an emotional support animal owner?

What happens when the airlines staff or landlord ask to see my proof that i’m an esa owner are they just asking for my esa letter.

American Airlines' Pet Policy Explained

• American Airlines allows fully trained service animals in the cabin but requires specific forms and fees for emotional support animals.
• Pets can travel in the cabin on certain flights but must meet weight and carrier size restrictions and remain in the carrier for the duration of the flight.
• Pets traveling as cargo must be in IATA-approved crates, adhere to weight restrictions, and cannot be exposed to extreme temperatures. Certain dog and cat breeds are not allowed to travel as cargo.

If you own a dog or cat, consider taking it with you when traveling. While this can be complicated and often quite expensive, it can be a better option than sticking it in a kennel or pet boarding facility while you are away.

Flying with your pet for the first time can be stressful for both you and the animal. With each airline seeming to have its own set of rules, many things must be considered. With this in mind, we will look at the world's largest airline, American Airlines, and see their policies regarding flying with your pet.

Service animals

While fully trained service animals can travel in the cabin on American Airlines flights, certain conditions exist. The service animal must be fully trained to aid and assist a disabled traveler. Service animals in training and emotional support animals may travel as pets but must meet all requirements and applicable fees.

In 2019, American Airlines revised its emotional support animal guidelines and now requires a medical health form from a doctor and a veterinary health form with proof that the animal is current with all vaccinations. The form must be submitted to American Airlines at least 48 hours before traveling, and the animal must be checked in with the passenger at an American Airlines ticket counter.

Traveling together with your pet in the cabin

While American Airlines accepts pets in the cabin on flights within the 48 contiguous United States, Alaska, Central America, Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, and St. Thomas, all other destinations require that your pet travel as cargo in the aircraft hold.

For the animal to travel with you in the cabin, it needs to be at least eight weeks old and not weigh more than a combined pet and carrier weight of 20 lbs. American Airlines requires soft-sided carriers with a waterproof bottom that does not exceed the following dimensions:

• Length = 18 inches
• Width = 11 inches
• Height = 11 inches

The pet must be placed under the seat in front of you and remain in the carrier for the flight duration. Passengers flying with pets in the cabin cannot sit in exit row seats. American Airlines charges $125 per carry-on pet and limits the number of pets on each flight.

Traveling with a pet in cargo

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has a set of standards to ensure the welfare of animals that all airlines must adhere to. All dogs and cats must travel in rigid, well-vented, leak-proof, secure IATA-approved travel crates. The crates must be large enough for the animal to stand up, turn around, and lie comfortably.

American Airlines has a dedicated American PetEmbark program for transporting live animals in cargo . To be able to fly with your pet in the cargo hold of the aircraft, the combined weight of the travel crate and pet cannot exceed 100 lbs (45 kilos).

The crate must be ventilated on three sides for domestic travel and four for international travel. It also requires a secure locking door from which the animal cannot escape. The secure ventilated door is required to hold food and water containers that can be refilled from outside the crate with enough supplies to last 24 hours.

American Airlines Cargo has dedicated heated and air-conditioned holding areas to ensure that your pet is not exposed to extreme heat or cold. Your pet cannot travel in the hold of an aircraft if the current weather or forecasted weather exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.4 degrees Celcius) at the departure or destination airport. Likewise, the same applies to cold weather when the temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7.2 degrees Celcius). Some exceptions are made if you can provide a letter from your vet saying that the animal can travel in colder or hotter weather.

What animals cannot travel as cargo

Like nearly all airlines, American Airlines refuses to transport. Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs of any mix and includes all Boxers, Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Pugs, Pit bulls, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Cats not permitted to fly cargo are Burmese, Persian, Himalayan, and any Exotic Shorthair breeds.

Cost and fees

The price of flying with your pet depends upon the starting point and destination. If flying internationally , you must fill out additional forms that your vet can supply. All animals traveling overseas need to be fitted with a destination-compliant microchip. Once your vet completes the form, it must be certified by a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) accredited veterinarian. Depending on where you live, you may need to drive to an area where they breed animals, such as horse farms.

Traveling with your pet can be complicated, and you need to organize weeks before your flight.

In this article, I’ll take a closer look at American Airlines’ pet policy including how to book your flight with your cat, how much you can expect to pay, and what size your cat carrier needs to be. 

Flying With a Cat on American Airlines

American Airlines has a cat-friendly pet policy that allows you to bring your cat in-cabin with you in place of your carry-on bag. Unfortunately, the pet carrier fee is a bit more than the carry-on bag fee.

You can fly with a cat on American Airlines for $125 per carrier each way. Additionally, you’ll have to get an airline-approved cat carrier for the trip. 

Before you check into your flight, be sure to take the time to prepare for the trip. Here are five things you need to know about flying with a cat on American Airlines:

Below, you’ll find more detailed information on how to fly with a cat on American Airlines and how you can best prepare for the trip.

Before you fly with your cat on American Airlines, you should take the time to familiarize yourself with the airlines’ pet policy . American Airlines’ pet policy is cat-friendly and very straightforward.

Cats can travel as a carry-on as long as they stay in the kennel under the seat in front of you for the entire flight and you pay the carry-on pet fee. With American Airlines, checked pets are only accepted for active-duty U.S. Military and U.S. State Department Foreign Service personnel. 

Your cat carrier will replace your carry-on bag for the flight, which means you can travel with your cat and one personal item in the cabin. A soft-sided cat carrier needs to be no bigger than 18″ x 11″ x 11″ and you can read more about the carry-on kennel size requirements here .

If you’re wondering where you can travel with your cat on American Airlines, there are a few restrictions to be aware of. According to the website , you can travel with a pet on most flights up to 12 hours or flights to/from select locations:  

• Within the 48 contiguous United States
• The U.S. and Canada
• Central America
• Puerto Rico

Additional special restrictions apply to Australia, the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, and South America. You cannot fly with carry-on pets to Hawaii or on transatlantic/transpacific trips.

Also, know that pets traveling within the U.S. and Puerto Rico must be at least eight weeks old.

No matter which airline you’re flying, bringing your cat won’t be free. Unfortunately, American Airlines charges one of the most expensive carry-on pet fees. So how much does it cost to fly with a cat on American Airlines?

The carry-on pet fee at American Airlines is $125 per kennel. This fee is for each destination without a voluntary layover or connection of 4+ hours; otherwise, fees may apply for each connecting trip. All pet fees are non-refundable and apply per kennel, each way.

Here are the additional pet services offered by American Airlines as well the region it’s available in and how much it costs: 

According to American Airlines’ website , fees for transporting your pet with American Airlines Cargo may vary depending on the trip details and size of the animal and kennel.

You can pay the pet travel fee when you book your ticket online at American Airlines . You can also pay at the airport or travel center with a credit card. 

In addition to researching the pet fees at American Airlines, I also checked out the pet carrier fees at a few other popular airlines to see how American Airlines compares:

• Alaska Airlines : $100
• American Airlines : $125
• Delta : $95
• Frontier : $99 
• Southwest : $95
• Spirit : $125
• United : $125

Unfortunately, American Airlines is one of the more expensive airlines to fly with your cat. However, it’s only $30 more per kennel than the cheapest airline pet carrier fee.

Pet Carrier Size Requirements

American Airlines allows both soft-sided and hard-sided kennels on flights, but the company does recommend a soft-sided carrier. That’s because they’re more likely to fit comfortably under the seat. 

Here are the carry-on kennel dimensions for American Airlines: 

• Hard-sided kennel: 19″ x 13″ x 9″ 
• Soft-sided kennel: 18″ x 11″ x 11″

If you’re on a regional flight with American Eagle, the hard-sided kennel dimensions reduce to 16″ x 12″ x 8″. In either case, I recommend a soft-sided carrier to be safe.  

If you need to buy a new carrier for your trip, all six of the best airline-approved cat carriers fit within American Airlines’ required dimensions. You can also use this guide to determine if your current cat carrier is airline-approved.

While the maximum dimensions of airline-approved cat carriers vary from airline to airline, it can also vary from aircraft to aircraft. American Airlines recommends contacting reservations ahead of time to verify the maximum dimensions on your upcoming flight.

In addition to being small enough to fit underneath the seat in front of you, an airline-approved cat carrier must also meet the following requirements:

• Your cat must be able to stand up, turn around, and lay down without touching the edge or top of the carrier
• There must be adequate ventilation on more than one side so your cat can breath
• It must be able to fully enclose your cat and be escape-proof (zippers or clasps on openings)
• The carrier can’t be broken in any way
• The carrier should be leakproof and contain absorbent bedding

These requirements are based on both individual airline policies and those outlined by the  International Air Transport Association (IATA) .

If you plan on flying with your cat on American Airlines, you can book your ticket as normal for your flight. Instead of adding your pet and paying the fee along with your ticket, you will have to pay for your cat’s trip at the airport. 

I went through the process of booking a ticket with American Airlines to see how the process would go, and there was never an option during the booking process to indicate that I’d be bringing a pet carrier.

Instead, I recommend booking your ticket as normal and then calling reservations to let them know you plan on bringing your cat. 

For English, you can call 800-433-7300 any time of day to let American Airlines know you’ll be flying with a cat. For Spanish, call 800-633-3711. For hearing and speech impaired, dial 711 to be connected through the National Relay Service any time of day.

On the day of your flight, give yourself some extra time at the airport before your boarding time. This will give you time to pay the additional pet fees that can’t be purchased with your ticket.

Once you’ve booked your flight, there are a few things you can do to help your cat prepare for the trip: 

• Make an appointment with your veterinarian. Before you make plans to travel with your cat, make sure they’re healthy enough to fly. Book an appointment with your vet as soon as possible to get a checkup, make sure your cat’s microchip information is up-to-date, and get any necessary paperwork. For American Airlines, you’ll only need a health certificate if your cat is traveling in cargo or if you’re flying to a destination with additional restrictions.
• Get your carrier early. The airport and the airplane are both going to be stressful for your cat, especially if they aren’t used to being in hectic or new spaces. For this reason, it’s important to get your airline-approved cat carrier as soon as possible . The earlier you buy your carrier, the more time your cat will have to get used to it. Once you have your carrier, set it out in your house and encourage your cat to explore it with food and treats. 
• Acclimate your cat to the car. If your cat isn’t a frequent traveler, they may be stressed just leaving the house. Start introducing travel to your cat as soon as possible before the flight. You can start by closing them in their carrier, picking them up, taking them outside, putting them in the car, and taking short trips around the neighborhood. Take it slow, and understand it may take days or weeks for your cat to get completely comfortable in the car. For more tips, check out my full guide on how to travel with a cat in the car .
• Use a cat calming aid like Feliway. Many veterinarian offices and cat owners use Feliway to help cats stay calm. You can buy Feliway spray at Amazon and spray it in your cat’s carrier and your car to help them stay calm the day of the trip. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use it on the plane. If your cat is particularly anxious, talk to your vet during your cat’s appointment about a prescription sedative for the day of the flight.
• Withhold your cat’s breakfast on flight day. To reduce the likelihood of your cat getting sick on the trip, withhold their breakfast the morning of. You can feed them a full meal no sooner than four hours before you leave, but avoid feeding them right before you head out the door unless told otherwise by your veterinarian. 

When it comes to the airport and plane, you’ll have to keep your cat in their carrier (outside of TSA). Consider packing some cat treats and small toys that they’re familiar with to help let them know they’re okay throughout the day.

Additionally, if you can pack a coat or familiar blanket, your cat may appreciate having their carrier covered in the airport or on the plane. This will help reduce some of the stressful stimuli around them, plus being surrounded by a familiar smell will be comforting for your cat.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, booking a trip through American Airlines is a great way to fly with your cat. The airline allows you to bring your cat with you in-cabin for the flight as long as they stay in their carrier under the seat for the duration of the flight.

You can expect an additional pet fee of $125 each way added to your ticket price, and you’re limited to one kennel per person. 

As you prepare for your trip, be sure to take your cat to the veterinarian, contact reservations to let them know you’ll be flying with a cat, and make sure you have an airline-approved cat carrier. American Airlines recommends a soft-sided carrier no larger than 18″ x 11″ x 11″.

The first step to booking your pet cargo with American is understanding its pet cargo policies. This includes knowing what animals you can bring, the extra costs involved, how to book pet cargo and the differences when flying domestically and internationally. Understanding these policies in advance can help you avoid the hassle when you’re ready to fly.

Restricted types of pets and breeds

American Airlines has a number of restricted pets and breeds, which can depend on the destination. While you’ll want to research to ensure that American Airlines will allow the transport of your pet before you fly, no matter where you’re flying, note that American Airlines does not transport:

Skunks or other odor-producing animals.

Venomous or poisonous snakes, lizards, invertebrates or amphibians.

While you are allowed to travel with more common pets, such as cats and dogs, American Airlines does have restrictions on the breeds you can travel with.

The following dog breeds are not accepted for travel on American:

Affenpinscher.

American Bully.

American Staffordshire Terrier.

Boston Terrier.

Boxer (All breeds).

Brussels Griffon.

Bulldog (All breeds).

Cane Corso.

Dogue De Bordeaux.

English Toy Spaniel.

Japanese Chin.

Lhasa Apso.

Mastiff (All breeds).

Presa Canario.

Pug (All breeds).

Staffordshire Terrier.

The following cat breeds are not accepted for travel on American:

Exotic Shorthair.

If you’re not sure about whether American Airlines will allow your pet cargo, be sure to contact the airline by emailing them at [email protected] .

Temperature matters

Before you travel, make sure to check the weather. Why? Because you cannot travel with a pet if the forecasted temperature is going to be 85 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, or if the temperature is 45 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. However, you may be able to waive this cold weather restriction with a letter from a licensed vet. Regardless of waivers and documentation, animals may not travel under any circumstances if the temperature is below 20 F at any spot on the itinerary.

Given the restrictions on bringing pet cargo when it’s 85 F or warmer, American Airlines does not allow pet cargo flying to/from the following cities between May 1 and Sept. 30:

Palm Springs, California.

Tucson, Arizona.

Pet cargo costs extra money (except for service animals)

The cost of pet cargo varies by region and can be confirmed at the time of booking, although service animals can be transported for no fee. Active members of the military receive a 50% discount on their pet cargo fees.

If you’re curious how much it will cost to bring your pet, American Airlines has a helpful rate calculator, too. You can use the calculator for pets flying within the United States that weigh less than 100 pounds and are smaller than 90 linear inches (which is the sum of your pet’s height, width and length).

There are differences flying pets internationally versus domestically

If you’re flying domestically within the continental U.S., Puerto Rico or into Hawaii, your pet will be flying as Priority Parcel Service as long as:

Your pet is under 100 pounds.

Your pet’s kennel is no larger than 36 inches long, 26 inches wide and 28 inches high.

If you’re flying internationally, out of Hawaii or your pet exceeds the weight and container restrictions for PPS, your pet will fly ExpediteFS.

ExpediteFS and PPS have different rates, so it’s important you know which your pet will be flying before you book.

Pet cargo requires its own booking

You’ll need to book your pet cargo separately from your own booking, and there are two ways to book your pet cargo:

Up to 10 days prior to departure. You can book your pet using the following website: aacargo.com/AACargo/ua/forms/pet .

Less than 10 days prior to departure. Call American Airlines at 800-227-4622.

The first and most frequently asked question travelers have is whether American Airlines allows customers to take their pets. The short answer is – yes; the airline allows pets to be transported as a carry-on or through the cargo.

However, American Airlines has numerous rules and requirements you have to meet to be allowed to take your pet on board. For starters, whether the airline will allow you to take your pet depends on its size and breed.

You can take your pet as a carry-on only if the pet is a cat or a dog and meets size, breed, and age requirements, which we’ll explain below.

According to American Airlines’ pet policy, pets are allowed on most flights that don’t exceed 12 hours.

When it comes to destinations, customers can take their pets on flights :

• Within the continental US
• The US and Canada
• Puerto Rico

Destination restrictions

The first thing you must remember is that the airlines may have additional special restrictions for traveling to or from Canada and Mexico, even though these two destinations are found on the list above. So, when flying with American Airlines, we highly recommend you check out all the information to make sure you can take your pet.

Furthermore, there are multiple destination restrictions that include countries such as Australia, the Caribbean, countries of the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Japan. The rules may apply to carry-on pets, checked pets, and cargo transport or may completely prohibit pet transport to a particular country.

Carry-on pet requirements

According to American Airlines’ pet policy, passengers can take one pet carrier as a carry-on bag. To take your pet, you have to pay the carry-on pet fee.

The first rule you have to remember is that only cats and dogs are allowed as carry-on pets. Even though you can take two pets in the same carrier (see more below), the total weight of both the pet and the carrier must not exceed 20 pounds.

It’s very important to note that if you take your pet as a carry-on, you can additionally take one personal item. American Airlines considers kennels as carry-on items. Therefore, you can’t bring a carry-on bag, a personal item, and your pet. The pet carrier replaces the carry-on bag.

You should also keep in mind that if you take a pet stroller, you’ll have to check it at the ticket counter. So, you’ll have to pay checked-bag fees for the stroller.

Pet carrier guidelines

Your pet will have to stay inside the carrier for the entire flight. Moreover, you’ll have to put the carrier in the under-seat area in front of you. Therefore, American Airlines has specific guidelines regarding the carrier.

According to the pet policy, your pet should be able to stand up and turn around inside its carrier. The transportation bag should be big enough for your pet to fit and feel comfortable while the bag stays closed (zipped) and fits in the space under the seat in front of you.

If you have a soft-sided collapsible kennel, you must ensure it’s secured, padded, and made of water-repellent material. The guidelines also say that soft-sided collapsible kennels should have nylon mesh ventilation on three or more sides.

We believe it’s important to mention that American Airlines says the soft-sided collapsible kennels may have slightly bigger dimensions as long as they fit the under-seat area. However, this can vary depending on the airplane, which is why you should always contact reservations to ensure your pet carrier meets the airplane criteria.

How many carry-on pets may fit in a kennel and on American flights?

American Airlines’ pet policy allows two dogs or two cats to share the same carrier. Of course, there are weight and age limitations. Each of the pets must be less than 20 pounds and less than six months old. You can take two pets as long as they’re both comfortable sitting, standing up, and moving around.

It’s crucial to remember that American Airlines accepts seven carriers on one flight. Of course, this rule doesn’t apply to service animals as they have to comply with other requirements.

If you’re flying on an American Eagle flight, keep in mind that only five kennels are allowed. Moreover, only one kennel is allowed in the first class. Call the airline in advance to ensure you can take your pet.

After you ensure your pet and carrier meet all the requirements, you must also check out the airplane itself. Some airplanes don’t have under-seat storage, or they have limited space. Therefore, you can’t take a pet as a carry-on on those flights.

How much does it cost to take carry-on pets?

Flying with your furry friend with American Airlines will cost you $125 per kennel, regardless of whether you fly in the main cabin, premium economy, business, or first class.

The pet fee applies to flights within the US, flights between US and Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean if the country allows entry. Carry-on pets aren’t allowed on flights to Hawaii.

American Airlines’ pet policy allows checked pets if the passenger is an active-duty US military or US State Department Foreign Service personnel. Even in these circumstances, the passenger must travel on official orders to meet the requirements.

If you’re military or US State Department Foreign Service personnel and want to fly with your pets with American Airlines, you can check two pets. You’ll have to provide a health certificate from a vet that was issued within ten days of travel or 60 days of your return.

Besides the health certificate, your pets, as well as the kennel, have to meet other criteria too.

Carrier guidelines for checked pets

For starters, you should know that each aircraft has specific dimension requirements for the pet carriers passengers can use. Therefore, when checking your pet, we recommend you ensure that the kennel is appropriate for the airplane you will fly on.

The kennel has to be large enough for the pet to stand, move, lie down, and feel comfortable when the kennel is closed. The total weight of the kennel and the pet mustn’t exceed 100 pounds.

Additionally, the kennel should be made of wood, metal, or plastic and have a welded or cast metal door. It has to be secure, leak- and escape-proof. Also, the kennel must have ventilation on at least three sides, with attached food and water dishes inside. You should add a small food bag for a 24-hour period on the top of the kennel.

If you have two pets in the same kennel, they have to be the same species, similar size, and weigh less than 20 pounds each. Both pets have to be between eight weeks and six months old.

Breed restrictions for checked pets

If you thought that you had learned all of American Airlines’ pet policy restrictions and requirements, you’re mistaken. Unfortunately, the airline has other limitations for checked pets related to their breed.

In short, you can take your cat if it isn’t a brachycephalic cat or a mix of that breed. This group includes the Burmese, Persian, Himalayan, or Exotic Shorthair cats.

Dog owners can’t take their dogs if they are brachycephalic, snub-nosed, or any mix of these breeds. This group includes American Staffordshire Terrier, Boxer, English Toy Spaniel, Mastiff, Pit Bull, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, etc. You can see the full list on this link .

What is the pet fee for checked pets on American Airlines flights?

Active-duty US military or State Department personnel can use this service to take their pets for a $200 fee per kennel. Each customer can take up to two pets in one kennel if they meet the airline’s requirements.

The $200 fee for checked animals applies to flights within the US, between the US and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, Europe, and the United Kingdom. The checked pet fee for flights to and from Brazil is $150.

It’s very important to note that these fees apply for flights without a voluntary stopover. The fee will apply for each connection segment if the trip includes a voluntary connection/stopover of more than four hours.

American Airlines has introduced the American PetEmbark, a special pet cargo service for customers who want to drop off their pets for a flight. The airline has multiple requirements regarding which pets can be shipped.

The fees for the pet cargo vary, depending on the pet’s size, kennel, and flight destination. Therefore, American Airlines has two distinctive services with different prices per kennel: PPS (Priority Parcel Service) and ExpediteFS.

You can use PPS if your pet is smaller and has to fly domestically in the continental US, Puerto Rico, or Hawaii. To use this service, the total weight of your pet and the kennel must be less than 100 pounds, with kennel dimensions 36″ x 26″ x 28″.

In case your pet has to fly internationally or out of Hawaii, you’ll have to use the ExpediteFS service. You’ll also have to use ExpediteFS if your pet and the kennel weigh more than 100 pounds.

Both services have different rates. Depending on the service you select, you can calculate the fees on your own or contact the airlines for additional information. You should also know that the airline may refund the charges in case your pet doesn’t travel on its booked flight.

Pet cargo requirements

As with checked pet service, American Airlines pet policy for transporting pets via cargo also includes breed restrictions. You should check out the restricted dog and cat breeds list before looking for a ticket.

One of the most important rules to remember is that American Airlines doesn’t accept sedated or tranquilized pets. That’s because sedated or tranquilized pets are at a higher risk of experiencing respiratory or cardiovascular problems at higher altitudes.

American Airlines has a very strict temperature policy for checked pets and pets traveling with the airline’s cargo. The airline created this policy in order to provide comfortable and, more importantly, safe transport.

According to American Airlines pet policy, the company allows warm-blooded animals if the temperatures on the ground are between 45°F and 85°F. The airline won’t take your pet if the ground temperature exceeds the limits.

It’s important to mention that ground temperature refers to the temperature in the animal holding areas, at terminal facilities, on a plane awaiting departure, and when moving the pets between the terminal and the plane. The ground temperature range applies to the origin, connection, and destination cities.

If the temperature is below the allowed degree range, your pet may travel if you provide a written letter from a licensed vet. The letter will confirm that the temperature is safe for your pet.

Flying With Dogs or Cats? These Are Airlines’ Pet Policies

American recently relaxed its rules for pets traveling inside the cabin with their owners. Here’s what the major U.S. airlines require to travel with a pet.

Flying with a pet can be expensive and confusing, with fees, weight limits, carrier size rules and the need to make sure there’s no loud barking (or meowing) on board.

Recently, American Airlines relaxed its pet policy to allow passengers to bring a carry-on bag in addition to a pet in a carrier, and more private flight options have been emerging in recent years for pet owners who can afford them.

Still, flying with large or medium-size dogs can be tricky, and many travelers are wary of leaving a pet in the plane’s cargo hold.

For those traveling on the major carriers with their pets as carry-ons, here’s what to know about each major domestic airline’s policy.

Southwest Airlines

On Southwest, a Dallas-based carrier, two checked bags can fly at no cost, but not pets. Southwest charges $125 per pet carrier on its flights.

Dogs or cats are allowed to travel below a seat in an approved carrier — up to 18.5 inches long by 8.5 inches high and 13.5 inches wide — according to the airline .

Southwest has a few caveats for those traveling with pets: The pet must stay in its carrier during the flight, and the carrier is considered a personal item or carry-on bag.

Up to six pets are allowed on Southwest flights. Once six pets are booked onto a flight, no further customers may add a pet companion to their booking.

United Airlines

United Airlines has no weight or breed restrictions for cats and dogs as long as they are in an approved hard or soft-sided carrier, measuring 17.5 inches long by 9 inches tall and 12 inches wide for a hard carrier, or 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide for a soft carrier.

United charges $125 each way for travel with pets. There is no fee for service animals on United flights, but some forms are required before the flight.

The carrier must fit under a seat, and where a passenger is allowed to sit can vary according to the type of aircraft. For example, people traveling with pets cannot sit in emergency rows. If you’re traveling with two pets (the maximum allotted), you are required to book two seats.

Delta Air Lines

Small dogs and cats can travel on Delta Air Lines flights as long as they can fit inside a carrier stored below the seat. The size of the carrier depends on the aircraft, but in general the airline recommends a soft-sided carrier no larger than 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide.

Your pet must be at least 8 weeks old and small enough to have some room to move around in the carrier, which must have ventilation openings on three sides.

Delta charges $95 for pets traveling as carry-on companions, and the passenger can bring only one personal item along with the pet. Certain seats cannot be booked for travel with an animal, such as those in an emergency exit row.

American Airlines

American Airlines allows cats and dogs to travel in a carry-on container, which must remain under the seat in front of the pet owner throughout the flight. The airline recommends a soft-sided carrier that measures 18 inches long by 11 inches tall and 11 inches wide.

The fee for a carry-on pet on a domestic American Airlines flight is $150.

Flights are limited to seven carry-on pets, not including service animals, and American Eagle flights are limited to five carry-on pets, with one in first class. There is no charge for service animals flying on American flight, but the airline requires forms to be filled out in advance.

The airline said in a statement that it had recently changed its cabin pet policy to allow customers with a pet to also bring either a personal item or carry-on bag stowed in the overhead bin (but not both).

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” the airline said.

Spirit, JetBlue, Frontier and Alaska

Spirit allows dogs and cats on its flights in a carrier no larger than 18 inches long by 14 inches wide and 9 inches tall for a fee of $125. The weight of the pet and the carrier cannot exceed 40 pounds, according to the airline .

Small dogs and cats can fly on JetBlue for fee of $125 each way , in an approved carrier. Up to six pets are allowed on JetBlue flights.

Frontier allows pets on board for a $99 fee each way, as long the pet fits in a carrier. Passengers can have only a personal item or carry-on in addition to their pet carrier.

Pets can travel in a carrier on Alaska Airlines flights for a fee of $100 each way. A passenger can travel with a pet carrier and a personal item, or a carrier and a carry-on bag.

Private or charter flights

Those who take their pets on private or charter flights, which can cost many thousands of dollars, have much more leeway. Dogs that weigh less than 150 pounds can sit on seats.

BarkAir, a charter operator tailored specifically for those flying with dogs, charges about $6,000 for a dog and its owner to travel, with flights between New York and Los Angeles and New York and London. Carriers are not required, and dogs can sit on laps, seats or beds.

Flying with Pets in the Cabin on American Airlines

More pets are allowed (7) in the cabin on American Airlines than most other airlines, but you should still make your plans and reservations as soon as possible to make sure your pet has a spot. The airline also has a slightly bigger carrier allowance than most airlines, especially for carrier length. This may make the difference for small dogs with longer bodies, but don’t try to cheat on your pet’s comfort and safety. American Airlines require that pets be able to comfortably sit, stand, lay down, and turn around in their carriers.

Whether you’re moving, visiting family, or just taking a vacation, sometimes you just can’t leave your furry friend behind when you travel! American Airlines has historically been a great choice for anyone who wants to travel with their pet. But, American Airlines pet policy has recently changed, and their checked pet service is temporarily suspended, making carrying them on your only option.

We’ve broken down all their current policies and answered all your questions here, so you can be prepared next time you’re flying with pets in American Airlines. 

Summary of American Airlines pet policy

Due to increased flight changes on the airline, American has stopped checking pets for the time being , except for active-duty U.S. military traveling on assignment. This means that most passengers must carry-on your pet until this policy changes back to allowing pets as checked luggage. If your animal is large, American is still offering to transport pets as cargo. But this involves dropping them off at a cargo facility before your flight, which isn’t ideal for most pet owners. 

The carry-on pet fee at American is $125 per kennel and your pet must remain inside of it during the duration of your flight (so, make sure your pet has enough room to sit-up, turn around and lay down in there — especially on longer flights!.) The kennel can be soft or hard-sided, but must be smaller than 19” x 13” x 9” ( or 48 cm x 33 cm x 22 cm). There are no strict weight restrictions on pets as long as they fit in this carrier. But, there is an exception to this rule if you’re flying business or first class, in which case the weight of your pet and carrier combined cannot exceed 20 pounds. Additionally, all pets flying must be at least eight weeks old. 

Your pet carrier will r eplace your carry-on bag, but you’ll still be able to bring on an additional personal item (like a backpack, purse etc.) at no extra charge. American allows up to seven kennels per flight (excluding service and emotional support animals), which is more than most other airlines allow! But, it’s always a good idea to call ahead and reserve a space for your pet on your flight, especially now that checked baggage isn’t an option for pets. 

Types of pets allowed on American Airlines flights

American only allows cats and dogs on their flights. As long as they fit within the carrier size restrictions and are at least eight weeks old, most dogs and cats are allowed, with a few exceptions. 

Dogs with snub-noses cannot fly on American for their own safety. This includes breeds like boxers, bulldogs, Pitbulls, pugs and more. All cat breeds are allowed on board except for Burmese, Persian, Himalayan and exotic shorthair. 

International flights

Pets can only fly to the following destinations: 

• The 48 contiguous United States + Alaska
• Central America
• Puerto Rico
• South America (excluding Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile)

So, if you’re traveling elsewhere with American, your pet cannot travel with you as a carry-on. No pets are allowed on transatlantic or transpacific flights, nor on flights that are over 11 hours and 30 minutes.

Keep in mind, service and emotional support animals have different rules than regular pets, so read on for those guidelines! 

Fees for flying with pets

Flying with pets in American Airlines will cost you $125 per kennel. It’s important to note, American charges per kennel, not per pet. So, if you have two small animals (they must be of the same species) and they can comfortably fit in the same kennel, you only have to pay the pet fee one time. But, make sure both animals have enough room to lay down and move around before you engage in this money-saving hack!

If you’re flying with a trained and registered service animal on American Airlines, there is no charge. 

Pet carrier restrictions

The biggest thing to know about American Airlines pet policy regarding kennels and carriers is that your carry-on cage cannot exceed the 19” x 13” x 9” ( or 48 cm x 33 cm x 22 cm). It doesn’t matter if your kennel is hard or soft-sided as long as it fits in these restrictions. 

American has a loose policy that the combined weight of the carrier and the pet cannot exceed 25 pounds, but don’t worry too much if you’re a few pounds over. What’s the most important is that your pet is comfortable inside the carrier and has enough room to sit up, lay down, and turn around inside. Pets need to remain in their carrier under the seat in front of you, and it’s your job to make their flight easy!

Seven carriers are allowed on American flights and five are allowed on American Eagle flights. Typically, only one kennel will be allowed in business/first class, so be sure to call ahead to reserve your pet’s space ahead of time.

American Airlines restrictions for emotional support animals

The rules for service and emotional support animals on American are different than those for regular pets, as it is on most airlines. An emotional support animal is a registered animal that can help an individual with psychiatric conditions such as anxiety, depression and more. 

Only dogs and cats are allowed on American Airlines flights as emotional support animals and the airline must be notified of their presence on the flight at least 48 hours before departure. 

These animals come at no charge to you, but for your pet to qualify as an emotional support animal, you must submit to the airline a form from a medical or mental health professional detailing your need, a veterinary health form, and an animal behavior form stating you take responsibility for your pet’s behavior during the flight. On flights longer than eight hours, you will also need to fill out and submit an animal sanitation form, saying your animal will not relieve itself on the plane (or will do so in a sanitary manner if it does). Your animal must fit in the seat under you or on your lap and be four months or older to qualify as an emotional support animal. 

There is only one emotional support animal allowed per passenger, but there are no restrictions on how many per flight. Emotional support animals can travel to most destinations, but some places have special restrictions on emotional support animals, so make sure you check the rules for your location before flying!

Note: The DOT recently changed the rules surrounding emiltional support animals and now, carriers are not required to recognize emotional support animals as service animals and may treat them as pets. We’ll have to wait and see how these new policies play out and how American Airlines will recognize emotional support animals going forward.

American Airlines restrictions for service animals

Service animals differ from emotional support animals because they are trained to perform life functions for individuals with disabilities. This includes service for those who are deaf, blind, have seizures, have mobility impairments and more. Passengers can have as many service animals as they need, and there is no limit to the number that can be on board at one time. 

On American, service animals can be a dog, cat or miniature horse, and traveling with them comes at no cost to the owner. Service animals can travel to any destination. Unlike emotional support animals, American Airlines does not require (but does recommend) advanced notice for service animals.

American Airlines typically does not require those traveling with service animals to bring or submit any forms to verify their status but does reserve the right to question owners to determine the classification of the animal. They also recommend you travel with your pet’s vaccination record and will require you to submit an animal sanitation form on longer flights.

Tips for flying with your pets on American Airlines 

A few quick tips and tricks to make understanding American Airlines pet policy and flying with your pet easy. 

Prepare, prepare, prepare!

The best thing you can do when flying with your pet in American Airlines (or any airline) is to prepare before. That way, most of the work will be done before you even arrive at the airport! Before your flight, make sure your kennel is within the size requirements and your pet is comfortable inside (you can even practice with them!) Call ahead to reserve your pet’s spot on the plane, and check that your destination is on the list of approved pet-travel locations. 

Give your pet potty breaks before the flight

No matter how long your flight is, you should always give your pet the chance to use the bathroom before getting on board. While you can get up and use the bathroom during the flight, your pet is stuck in their kennel. All airports have pet relief areas past the security checkpoint, so be sure to visit one at least twice before boarding. 

Consult your veterinarian

Most airlines have restrictions on certain breeds of animals that prohibits them from flying for their own safety. For example, on American snub-nosed dogs can’t fly due to their limited air capacity. But, just because your pet is okayed to fly by the airline, doesn’t mean they’re 100% ready to travel. Check-in with your vet at least two weeks before flying so they can give your pet the all clear, and update their vaccinations as needed. 

An anxious owner makes for an anxious pet, and you don’t want your furry travel companion to be scared during the flight. Once you’re on board, sit back and take a deep breath. You did it! You and your pet are safely on board and will soon be at your destination — the hard part is over. Distract yourself during the flight with books, movies, or sleep, and don’t forget to periodically check in on your pet!

Pets must fit inside a carrier that is 19” x 13” x 9” ( or 48 cm x 33 cm x 22 cm) and the weight of the pet plus the carrier should be around 25 pounds. All pets must be at least eight weeks old to travel.

None! Documentation is only required for emotional support and service animals.

Although American Airlines has changed their pet policy to exclude pets as checked baggage, their policies for carry-on pets are clear and easy to follow.
