Cruise the islands of French Polynesia

French Polynesia

Bucket List Experience

Aquamarine lagoons, spiky volcanic peaks, vertiginous cliffs plunging into indigo seas and the scent of frangipani in the air are all part of the allure of a voyage through the paradise of French Polynesia.

Typical routes include the Society Islands, which are close to Tahiti and include Moorea, Huahine, Taha’a and Bora Bora, famed for its dazzling lagoon. The diving at the Tuamotos atolls is unparalleled, over dazzling corals, with sharks, rays and turtles easy to spot. Other ships head for the remote Marquesas Islands, which enchanted artist Paul Gauguin, who is buried there.

Wherever you go, everything from snorkelling to stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking, horse riding and 4×4 tours is available. The islands have a rich culture, too, with fascinating archaeological sites and carved stone tikis to explore. This is a cruise for romantics, but also divers, adventurers and anybody intrigued by the gentle people and fascinating history of the South Pacific.

Getting there & doing it

Papeete, capital of Tahiti, is the gateway to cruises around French Polynesia. Some ships sail the islands close by, including Moorea, the coral atolls of the Tuamotos and the limpid lagoon of Bora Bora.

Others explore the jagged, volcanic Marquesas Islands, some 900 miles from Tahiti. Cruise ship is by far the most convenient way to travel, although the islands are connected by ferry and air. This is an expensive destination, though, so the cost of independent travel can mount up, especially hotel stays.

For a more authentic experience, try Aranui 5, a hybrid cargo/passenger ship that combines the facilities of a cruise with immersion in local culture.

When to do it

May to September are the driest months, although August is always busy with French holidaymakers. You should see whales from August to October. November to April is wetter and more humid.

5 reasons to see French Polynesia on a Windstar Cruise

A big thank you to Windstar Cruises for hosting my cruise so I could review my experience. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Tahiti. Bora Bora. Moorea. The names conjure exotic islands floating in iridescent waters, trimmed with swaying palms and talcum-sand beaches. Part of French Polynesia, they beckon to travelers like Bali Ha’i fantasies in the far reaches of the South Pacific.

They were top of mind as I boarded the inaugural 11-night sailing in French Polynesia of Windstar Cruises’ 312-passenger Star Breeze, which departed from Papeete, Tahiti. It was my first trip to this legendary vacation haven, and I was eager to see it up close and personal.

But Mother Nature had other plans. As oversized Tropical Cyclone Nat headed straight for Tahiti from the east, Star Breeze’s Capt. Simon Terry decided to divert the ship some 900 miles  northeast to the little-known Marquesas Islands — about 3,000 miles from anywhere else on the planet. This off-the-grid archipelago, still part of French Polynesia, is so remote, in fact, that it sees precious few cruises — or visitors. Most people arrive by yacht or sailboat. In his 32 years at sea, Capt. Terry had never had to change an entire itinerary on such short notice.

But in a twist of fate, our impromptu stop in the Marquesas became a sneak peek because Star Breeze is actually planning to include these islands in its July 2024 itinerary. And the fact that the ship was able to pivot so successfully is just one of five reasons why a Windstar cruise is the perfect way to see French Polynesia.

Local expertise

Windstar has been sailing in French Polynesia for 36 years, longer than any other cruise line. And it capitalizes on its destination expertise. “The relationships, the friendships that we have here in Tahiti are so strong, so profound,” said Windstar Cruises’ President, Christopher Prelog, who was on board this sailing. “You get to see Tahiti behind the scenes beyond the (famous) beaches and landscape. The best part is its people.”

Indeed, shore excursions at most ports of call included a culture-focused option in addition to typical outdoor adventures such as diving, snorkeling, biking, hiking and exploring by ATV — all enriched by knowledgeable guides. You could take heritage tours to sacred archaeological sites, visit vanilla plantations and pearl farms (and harvest your own Tahitian black pearls), watch the famed fire dancers, and — unique to Windstar — check out the Coral Gardeners reef restoration lab, which is replanting coral in the islands.

“Our goal is to show the real Polynesia to guests, not just snorkeling and jet skis,” the destinations manager Kuba Rudolff told me.

Prelog agrees. “On our ATV tour in Huahine, you get to see the holy (blue-eyed) eels (which are revered here),” he said. “We’re offering something guests haven’t seen before and trying to offer surprises.”

Consider my immersive cultural tour of Fakarava, before we sped away from the cyclone. I tried my hand at Polynesian javelin throwing (harder than it looks), watched how to harvest coconut meat, learned how to braid palm fronds into fish, and sipped fresh coconut water from its shell while a four-piece band and two dancers welcomed us, Polynesian-style.

Size of ships

Windstar’s six small ships, none with more than 312 passengers, are perfect for Polynesia’s smaller islands and atolls. They’re able to nose into intimate ports that are off limits to larger vessels. While some larger cruise lines visit the top tourist islands, few call at the less-frequented ones, like Windstar does. Consider the vacation hotspot of Bora Bora, which even limits daily cruise passengers to 1,200 — effectively preventing large ships from docking.

Unlike larger ships, there were no lines for the restaurants or buffet or for tendering ashore, and excursions were all in small groups. “The size allows you to personalize the experience,” said Prelog. “300 passengers is the sweet spot. Guests want a smaller, less-crowded experience.”

Plus, island hopping through these pristine waters, just like the first Polynesians did about 2,000 years ago, is a far different experience than a week in a land-based hotel.

Staff and crew

Passengers uniformly raved about the staff and crew. “The cruise communicates a family feeling throughout — from the start when the ship’s company greets everyone with ‘welcome home,’” said passenger John Perkowski, from Kansas City, MO, who was on his seventh Windstar cruise. “The staff and passengers really intermix. Windstar selects such wonderfully friendly people.”

Another passenger, Terri Campbell from Charlotte, NC, also cited the size and staff as the reasons she chose to cruise with Windstar for the fourth time. “It’s smaller and more intimate. The staff is more attentive; they make everyone feel good. From my first trip, they called me by name.”

The line’s whopping 90% employee return rate speaks volumes about the good vibes on board.

Local culture on board

Windstar is admirably destination focused. To enhance that, it recently added two new roles: a guest lecturer and a cultural ambassador, who join a local chef in bringing Polynesian traditions onto the ship.

From Tahitian lecturer Aroha Teiva, I learned fascinating facts about Polynesian history. Starting about 1,500 years ago, the first Polynesians originally came from — wait for it — Taiwan from where they spread out in outrigger canoes across the vast Pacific from New Zealand in the south to Hawaii in the north and all the way to Easter Island in the east. In all, they explored an area about 10 million square miles and located more than 1,000 islands! (Polynesia means “many islands.”)

What’s more, when Europeans first arrived in the 16 th century, they found sweet potato and squash, two foods native to the New World — evidence that these skilled, intrepid seafarers discovered the Americas long before Europeans did.

Meanwhile, Polynesian cultural ambassador Pearl Manate, clad in a beautiful Tahitian outfit and flowers in her hair, gave hands-on classes in language, fashion, dance and music — all delivered with a warm smile. I learned essential words in the Tahitian language ( la orana for “hello,” maururu for “thank you,” and nana for “goodbye”); how to tie and wear a pareo , the colorful native skirt; how to use my arms to dance Tahitian-style and how to strum a ukulele (I mastered “You Are My Sunshine” and a simple Polynesian tune).

Local food and entertainment showed up on the ship, too: poissan cru , Tahiti's national dish of raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk; chicken fafa , skillet-cooked chicken, rice and coconut milk; and market-fresh fruits for breakfast, including starfruit, papaya, mango and others. And Windstar’s signature deck-top BBQ dinner featured a group of traditional Marquesan dancers and drummers who wowed us with their rhythmic moves.

Even the nightly turndown service spotlighted Tahitian culture. Guests returned to their suites at night to find small local gifts: a scented soap from Bora Bora, a bottle of frangipani-scented perfume, a small bottle of Tahiti's famous Monoi oil, and coconut sweets, as well as notecards with Tahitian vocabulary words and explanations of local legends.

Marquesas Islands

 “This is my paradise. Life is simple here,” said our driver Judith Tehuitua, as she shuttled us around Nuku Hiva, the Marquesas’ principal island (population: 3,000), in her pickup truck. We had just arrived in this rugged archipelago, whose islands are wrapped in primeval vegetation and sculpted by jagged volcanic peaks. American writer Herman Melville set his first novel, Typee, on Nuku Hiva when he visited in the 1840s.

Despite having only 9,000 inhabitants in all, these islands are so isolated that they developed their own language (Marquesan, distinct from Tahitian spoken in the rest of French Polynesia), dances (on tiptoe for women, instead of flat-footed elsewhere) and even tattoo symbols. Under sunny skies, Judith drove us high into the mountains, through lush vegetation dripping with bananas, mangoes, bougainvillea and breadfruit, to an ancient archaeological site. On a groaning board laid out for us, we sampled manioc cake, breadfruit chips, jellylike baby coconut and exotic tropical fruits.

Later, back in the main port of Taiohae, a local troupe performed the traditional Bird Dance for cruise passengers in a ceremonial amphitheater dotted with sacred totems. The site hosts a regional festival every few years, “when we invite our ‘cousins’ from Tahiti, Easter Island, Tonga, New Zealand, Samoa and Honolulu,” Judith told us. Sporting feathered headdresses, loin cloths and some, tattooed from head to toe, the performers entranced us, as the sun set behind craggy cliffs. Dance is integral to Marquesan culture as a way to preserve a tradition nearly eliminated by early colonialists.

Our next stop was Hiva Oa, where the French fauvist painter, Paul Gauguin, worked and eventually died in 1903. I visited the small Paul Gauguin Cultural Center that displays reproductions of his paintings, his simple thatched-roof house next door, and his plain grave in the hilltop Calvary Cemetery.

Hiva Oa’s savage, otherworldly beauty, so fetching in Gauguin’s work, surrounded us on our tour to a  marae , or sacred worship site, tucked into dense, pungent thickets. Our university-educated guide, Bryan O’Connor (his great-grandfather was Irish), explained that maraes were used for ceremonial rituals, including human sacrifices and cannibalism, when the people here were organized in tribes. Other ancestral traditions remain strong. “Hunting and fishing are still part of our education, which starts young,” he added. “I killed my first pig when I was six years old — with a knife.”

But the highlight of our visit was an extraordinary dance and drum performance hosted by the mayor of Hiva Oa in honor of a young wedding couple onboard our ship whose planned nuptials in Bora Bora had to be canceled. Dressed in traditional costumes, the bride and groom joined the dancers on the field and received a blessing from a local shaman. Many of the island's 2,500 people turned out for the celebration, bringing a potluck of local dishes for cruise guests to try afterward. With only 22 tourists on the island that day (without Windstar passengers), it seems we made a splash of our own.

Secluded and lacking the dazzling coral reefs of other Polynesian islands, the Marquesas may never join the tourism mainstream. But that made our unexpected visit on this magical mystery cruise all the more memorable.

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

Silversea's all-inclusive luxury ocean and expedition cruises offer voyages to more than 900 destinations across the seven continents. Silversea's 11 ultra-luxury ships and expedition vessels range in size from 51 to 364 suites and boast spacious ocean view accommodations – most with private verandas. Windstar's six intimate ships accommodate between 148 and 342 guests. Passengers can choose between cruising on one of the line's three-masted Wind Class vessels or one of its three Star Plus Class ships.

Windstar just announced the addition of two new ships to its fleet; Star Seeker is expected to launch in December 2025, followed by Star Explorer in December 2026. These two vessels will feature 112 suites with private verandas and infinity windows, two Owner's Suites with wraparound balconies, a water sports platform, a two-story spa and fitness center, and more. The ships are constructed with ice-strengthened hulls that position them for exploration in remote destinations like Antarctica.

On Celebrity Beyond and the newest addition to the fleet, Celebrity Ascent , adults can have a unique dining experience at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud. The world-renowned Global Culinary Ambassador for the line, Daniel Boulud created the menu at this elegant venue, incorporating dishes inspired by his travels. You'll also find an impressive wine list to accompany your dining experience.

When it's time to relax, The Solarium is a popular adults-only area located on the Resort Deck of all Celebrity ships. This light-filled pool area encased by a glass dome is the perfect quiet space for reading a book or taking a nap. If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners, a partnership with Caymus Vineyards. These 12-guest evenings are offered fleetwide, two to three times during each cruise. The Serenity Adult-Only Retreat is located on all of Carnival Cruise Line 's ships. Access to this tranquil outdoor hideaway is complimentary for passengers 21 and older. For top-notch steaks, contemporary Italian cuisine and panoramic ocean views, make a reservation at the Cogsworth-inspired Palo Steakhouse. If you prefer French-style fare and world-class wines served in an elegant and shimmering setting, Enchanté by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two. Before dinner at either venue, enjoy a signature cocktail at The Rose. After dinner, you won't want to miss the galactic libations and ever-changing views of faraway galaxies at the adults-only Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge bar.

Norwegian Cruise Line has three adults-only outdoor venues for guests 18 and older (though specific spaces vary by ship). On Norwegian 's Bliss, Escape, Getaway and Breakaway ships, the Vibe Beach Club sun deck invites guests to relax in oversized hot tubs and comfy daybeds, adding perks like a full-service bar and chilled towels. Guests can enjoy two-story beach clubs on Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore, while the clubs on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva include the line's first infinity hot tubs. Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 18 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoor-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. Select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation.

Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas. Guests of both bars must be at least 21 years old when sailing from North America or a minimum of 18 when departing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Adult cruisers (18 and older) can relax and chill out at the first suspended infinity pool at sea at The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas. The beach-vibe neighborhood, perched eight stories above the sea at the back of the ship, features Champagne cocktails, a DJ spinning tunes, full-size daybeds, a wraparound bar, and endless ocean and sunset views from the multilevel terrace.

"That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.

Huahine Island is one of French Polynesia's Society Islands - a French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean. Huahine is part of Leeward Islands group and has population around 6,000.

The island has length of 16 km (10 mi) and max width of 13 km (8 mi). It covers a total area of approx 75 km2 (29 mi2) and consists of two main isles surrounded by a coral reef with several smaller islets. Big Huahine (Huahine Nui) is the northern one, and Little Huahine (Huahine Iti) is the southern. The two are divided by a few hundred yards of water. They are naturally linked via a sandspit at low tide. A bridge was later built to connect both Huahine islands.

Its administrative centre is Fare, located on (Big) Huahine Nui.

One of the island's most famous tourist attractions is a bridge crossing over a stream with up to 2 m (7 ft) long eels. The eels are deemed sacred by the local mythology. Tourists can buy a can of mackerel to feed them.

Breathe in the world’s cleanest air on these ‘absurdly beautiful’ islands

If you’re sick of London ’s polluted air, you might want to consider escaping to an ‘absurdly beautiful’ collection of islands in the middle of the ocean to clear your lungs.

According to the World Air Quality Report by IQAir, the world’s worst air quality is found in Bangladesh, followed by Pakistan , India, Tajikistan and Burkina Faso. And, quelle surprise, the UK did not fare too well either.

It might seem like an extreme measure, but to access the best air quality you’ll need to fly to a super remote destination in the South Pacific – and that’s French Polynesia, a collection of 121 geographically dispersed islands and atolls.

Meanwhile, in second place was Mauritius, followed by Iceland , Grenada, Bermuda, and New Zealand. Honourable mentions also went to Australia , Puerto Rico, Estonia and Finland.

Famous for its coral lagoons, waterside bungalow hotels, mountains and black sand beaches, French Polynesia is so large that it’s divided into five groups of islands: the Society Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands, and the Austral Islands.

Tahiti, which is found in the Society Islands group, is home to the majority of the area’s residents, housing 69% of the population. Likewise, Bora Bora is a popular tourist destination, as are Taha’a Island, Raiatea Island, and Huahine Island.

Things to do in French Polynesia

Visitors to French Polynesia often start in Tahiti, as it’s the largest and most developed island.

It’s divided into Tahiti Nui (the larger section in the west) and Tahiti Iti (the eastern peninsula), hosting an array of breathtaking natural sites including lagoons, waterfalls, and two extinct volcanoes.

To access peace (and crucially, shade, as Tahiti gets incredibly hot), stroll along the Pā’ōfa’i Gardens, found in the middle of Papeete town centre. It’s comprised of a one-mile stretch of paths that line the waterfront, housing hundreds of exotic trees and shrubs as well as ornamental fish ponds.

There’s similar beauty to be found at the Fa’aruma’i Waterfalls, which is free to visit, as well as the black sands of Taharuu Beach.

And to learn more about local history, culture and nature, visit the Museum of Tahiti and The Islands, which is the national museum of French Polynesia, presenting native jewellery and cultural artefacts such as whaling canoes.

Meanwhile, nearby Tikehau was described by one delighted Reddit user as having ‘absurdly beautiful’ waters.

‘There was hardly any civilization outside of people who lived and worked in the hotels, dive instructors,’ wrote Ibz25 in the Tahiti thread.

‘This island is the only place in Polynesia where you’re essentially guaranteed to swim with a Manta Ray and I got within a few feet of one that was at least twice my size.’

As mentioned, Bora Bora is also a popular highlight, surrounded by coral reefs and turquoise lagoons, which make it similarly apt for scuba diving.

The Bora Bora Lagoonarium houses a diverse range of tropical fish within a small, naturally enclosed section of the wider lagoon, while Matira Beach offers scenic hiking trails as well as stunning, crystal-clear waters.

Mount Otemanu rises up more than 2,400 feet from the surface of a turquoise lagoon, and is best explored with a guide on a day trip, bookable through the likes of Tripadvisor.

How to get to French Polynesia

Despite its fresh air, French Polynesia isn’t super easy to get to.

If you’re travelling from the UK, it involves multiple journeys, with one involving a flight from London Heathrow Airport to Los Angeles, followed by a flight from LA to Fa’a’ā International Airport (if you want to travel to Tahiti, that is).

If you want to go onwards to Bora Bora, you’ll need to change again at Fa’a’ā.

When to visit French Polynesia

French Polynesia is famous for being sun-soaked all year round, so the best time of year to visit isn’t necessarily dictated by the weather, but rather by the high season.

The most popular time of year to visit Bora Bora, for example, is between May and October, when flights could set you back close to £2,000. However, if you visit outside of this time period, you’ll likely snap up a better deal.

GEORGE TOWN: The world's largest privately-owned residential cruise ship has docked in Penang for the next two days.

State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the cruise, dubbed "MS The World," would stay at the Penang cruise terminal for two days before departing for Langkawi on Tuesday (May 14) night.

He said the ship docked in Penang at 2pm on Sunday (May 12) and would depart at 11pm on Tuesday (May 14).

"This cruise serves as a lavish retreat for individuals and their families as it sails across the world's seas," he said.

"This extraordinary vessel houses 165 ultra-luxurious apartments, which arrived in Penang after it departed its last port of call at Koh Phi Phi, Thailand.

"Its next destination will be Langkawi," he said in a statement on Sunday (May 12).

Wong said its arrival was a momentous occasion in the state, marking a significant milestone for Penang.

"It solidifies our position as a premier destination for luxury maritime travel.

"Situated strategically in Southeast Asia, Penang stands out as a prime destination for cruise liners traversing the region.

"Serving as a key port city, the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal in George Town showcases Penang's dedication to providing world-class facilities and services tailored to cruise tourists," he said.

MS The World is a private residential cruise ship operated like a condominium complex, with large apartments that can be purchased. Residents from many countries can live on board as the ship travels.

Some residents choose to live on board full-time, while others visit periodically throughout the year.
