The perfect road trip map to drive across the United States

Summer is the perfect time for a road trip, and spring is the perfect time to plan one! With the weather warming up, we tend to get itchy for travel. Today I’ll share our perfect road trip map to see any part (or all) of the United States. Let’s hit the road and take that great American road trip!

When we started our family gap year , two and a half years ago, we planned to travel from the Pacific Northwest, down the coast of California, through Texas to Florida, and then up the east coast.

We did just that, but then we continued to travel and have now circled the United States four times — and we’re preparing for our fifth cross-country road trip!

Each route has been a little different, which has helped us hit new regions, see diverse landscapes, and visit unique attractions.

The perfect United States road trip map

So where do you want to go? From coast to coast, there is SO much to see and do in the United States. It’s one of the biggest countries in the world, and your experience can be just about anything you’d like — from a tropical adventure in south Florida, to the snowy mountains of Colorado, to the misty Pacific Northwest.

You can try to visit all of the national parks and national monuments. You can head to New York and experience that big city life or escape to the quiet plains of the midwest.

There are two different kinds of road trips: those that are focused on the destination and those that are focused on the journey. Maybe you’re driving on a road well-known for its beauty, like the Going-To-The-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, or maybe you’re driving just to get from city to city and visit the hot spots.

But ideally, you can combine both of those goals and see gorgeous landscapes on your way to fun activities!

The best route to visit all 50 states at once

Unless you’re a very extreme or long-term traveler, I’m guessing you don’t plan to hit every single state — but if you are, I can point you in the right direction!

Check out Randy Olson’s  optimal US road trip maps , or visit TripSavvy’s list of  must-see American attractions  in an ordered loop you can begin at any point. These are two great resources if you are trying to go everywhere!

Our biggest tip for traveling the whole country: go south in the winter and north in the summer! Yes, being snowbirds is basically our life goal.

I’d love to share our favorite road trip routes in each region of the US. This will help you plan the perfect road trip in your own neck of the woods, or anywhere you plan to visit across the country!

Getting misty in the Pacific Northwest

We’ll always have a soft spot for the northwestern corner of the country, as that was our very first stop on our full-time family travels. We had never visited before, so the giant trees and almost-perpetual rainbows had us captivated.

Head to Seattle for a wide range of activities : go up to the top of the Space Needle, ride a wooden boat on Lake Washington, wander through Pike Place Market, and visit Amazon HQ .

If you’ve got plenty of time to spend in Washington, consider driving the Cascade Loop, visit Mount Rainer National Park or Olympic National Park, or look for orcas in the San Juan Islands.

Then go south to Portland and browse the shelves at Powell’s Books and eat a Voodoo Doughnut. Head just to the east to visit gorgeous Multnomah Falls, then drive to the west coast to visit Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock.

Cruise down the coast of California

I couldn’t write a blog post on great road trips without including the Pacific Coast Highway ! We got to drive highway 1 down the coast of California near the end of 2018, and we’ll never forget it!

Start in San Francisco — visit the redwood trees, drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, and be sure to take a ride on one of the San Francisco cable cars!

From there, follow highway 1 and drive through Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Big Sur. Stop in San Simeon and see the elephant seals.

Then cruise through the southern California beach towns of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Malibu, and end your journey at the Santa Monica Pier (or continue on to San Diego).

Get your kicks on Route 66

Having lived in Arizona for many years, we’ve driven along Route 66 more than once. Yes, it extends all the way “from Chicago to LA”, but there are some great iconic landmarks you can still visit along the Mother Road in Arizona, so it’s our pick for the southwestern region of the US.

Top stops along the way include the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, “standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona”, the Meteor Crater, Twin Arrows, Seligman, and Kingman. Visit soon — some landmarks are sadly wasting away.

All 50 States Tip: Once you get to Kingman, it’s just about 90 minutes to get to Las Vegas, if you need to check Nevada off your 50 state bucket list!

Complete the Texas Triangle

Texas boasts a number of major cities, living up to the saying that everything is bigger in Texas! And you can visit each of these metro areas when you take a triangle-shaped road trip in the middle of the state.

Start in San Antonio: walk the Riverwalk and tour the Alamo. Drive up to Austin for some great live music and nightlife. At the peak of the triangle you’ll find Dallas: smell the flowers at the Dallas Arboretum, play around at the National Videogame Museum, and eat a steak…because you’re in Dallas and living that cowboy life.

Head southeast to Houston and visit the Houston Space Center, and then drive to the coast to ride the rides at the Pleasure Pier in Galveston.

All 50 States Tip: If you’re coming to Texas from Arizona, you might try to time your trip so you hit the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico on your way. It happens in October and is well-worth the stop!

Glide along the Gulf Coast

You’ll find small beach town charm and pristine white sugar sand along the Gulf Coast of the United States. It’s one of our favorite spots in the country!

Start in New Orleans, Louisiana and soak up all the French Quarter has to offer, including muffalettas, beignets, and really great jazz. Then drive east, across the bottom of Mississippi and Alabama. Leave I-10 to drive south to Gulf Shores, Alabama, and then stick to the roads closest to the beach as you drive along the Florida panhandle, stopping at any beach towns that take your fancy.

If you’ve got the time and the budget, continue heading into central Florida for some fun at the theme parks, and then drive south to our next road trip recommendation…

Road trip through the tropics

In Southern Florida, you can get a real taste of the tropics without having to leave the continental US! Miami is just a 3-hour drive from Orlando, and about another 3-hour drive will take you through the Keys all the way into Key West.

In Miami, visit the colorful Wynwood neighborhood, and make sure to grab some Taiyaki ice cream! Then head over to South Beach and check out the nightlife.

In Key West, walk down Duval Street and say hi to all the chickens that roam free. Make sure to have a slice of key lime pie and watch the sunset in Mallory Square.

Your southern Florida road trip map

Adventures in Appalachia

Discover the delights of the southeast in what you might call the “Appalachia” region. You can make a bit of a circle traveling through Savannah and Atlanta in Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina — or the other way around!

See the Spanish Moss in Savannah, taste every Coke product in the World of Coke tasting room in Atlanta, experience Music City in Nashville, stroll the botanical gardens at UNC Charlotte, and take a carriage ride through Charleston’s cobblestone streets.

This route will also take you through Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Asheville — other great cities to explore, so be sure to stop if you have time!

And if you have to make the pilgrimage to Graceland, just extend your route to include Memphis, thank you very much!

Your Appalachia road trip map

Explore US history in the mid-Atlantic

Heading north, the mid-Atlantic states are a great place to learn about our country’s history and visit some of the biggest, busiest cities in the world.

In Virginia, you can experience colonial life at Historic Jamestowne. In Washington DC, you could spend hours and hours exploring all the free museums and memorials (and don’t forget to visit the pandas at the National Zoo). Our big kids even had the chance to tour the White House!

All 50 States Tip: Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia is just one hour west of DC, and there you can hike part of the Appalachian Trail!

In Pennsylvania, you can visit Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

Then drive up to New York City and experience the Big Apple! If you’re visiting after Broadway has reopened, definitely take in a show. Take the requisite visits to Times Square and Rockefeller Center, and stroll through Central Park.

Ride the Seaglass Carousel in Battery Park and tour the Statue of Liberty. Then, take the Q train to Coney Island and eat some hot dogs and deep-fried Oreos.

That’s right — historic sites AND deep-fried Oreos. You’re welcome.

All 50 States Tip: This is where you should check off Delaware and New Jersey, too. Visit Rehoboth Beach and Atlantic City and enjoy the beaches and boardwalks!

Take a pilgrimage to New England

Get it…pilgrimage?

All 50 States Tip: As you head north, stop in at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut and stroll the cliff walk in Newport, Rhode Island.

Get your dose of history by walking the Freedom Trail in Boston, and have some fun on a Duck Tour. Then drive north for a trip through the most quaint, picture-perfect New England port towns. Walk around Portsmouth, New Hampshire, then make your way into Maine.

I was born and raised in Maine, so yes my New England road trip is a little Maine-heavy!

Visit Dock Square in Kennebunkport for some primo shopping and a summertime treat, like a fresh-squeezed lemonade or ice cream from Aunt Marie’s.

Then, head to Old Orchard Beach for a day of fun at the beachside amusement park, Palace Playland. Do NOT leave without getting an order of pier fries — and eat them like the locals, doused in vinegar and caked with salt.

Portland is a much-loved Maine “big city” so take a stroll through the Old Port and check out the unique shops and bars. Then, if you’ve got the time, drive to Acadia National Park and catch the earliest sunrise in the United States.

All 50 States Tip: If you’re headed to the midwest from New England, drive through Vermont and tour the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory, then stop at Niagara Falls in New York!

Your New England road trip map

Meander through the Midwest

Things get a little tricky in the Midwest and central US just because there are so many options for where to go and in what order. So I’ll detail the two routes I would take, but you can mix-and-match the cities in this section and the next, and curate your own perfect road trip map through the middle of the country!

If you’re coming from the Northeast, stop in Cleveland, Ohio to tour the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then head to Detroit, Michigan to visit the Motown Museum and take the Coney Dog Challenge .

If you’d like, stop to explore Cincinnati on your way to Louisville, Kentucky. In Louisville, see how they make baseball bats at the Louisville Slugger Factory and learn all about horse racing at Churchill Downs (or hey, time your road trip to attend the Kentucky Derby!).

Check out the Indy 500 track in Indianapolis, or try your hand at some duckpin bowling. Then drive west to Chicago. See The Bean, eat a Chicago dog and some deep-dish pizza, and admire the artwork at the Art Institute of Chicago. If you must have the full Ferris Beuller experience, go to the top of Willis Tower and put your forehead against the glass.

Head north and cross into Wisconsin. Visit the Milwaukee Public Market and get your fill of local cheese! From there, go to Minneapolis and get lost in the Mall of America or go downtown and toss your hat in the air a la Mary Tyler Moore.

All 50 States Tip: You can drive about 3.5 hours from Minneapolis to Fargo, North Dakota, where you can join the Best for Last Club (IF North Dakota is your 50th and final state visited)!

As your last midwestern stop, head south to Iowa and explore Des Moines. Walk through the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park and visit the famous bridges of Madison County.

All 50 States Tip: You can fit Nebraska in here by heading to Omaha — enjoy a leisurely walk across the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and then have a nice sit-down dinner in Omaha’s Old Market. Or, if you prefer, you can visit the other side of Nebraska on our next route.

Your Midwest road trip map

Go through the Gateway to the West

Start your exploration of the central US in St. Louis and go up in the Gateway Arch. Then, on your way to Oklahoma City, stop in Bentonville, Arkansas to tour the Walmart Museum and the Crystal Lakes Museum (both free and worth the visit!).

In Oklahoma City, visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial (the site of the 1995 bombing) and the Land Run Monument. Then head north to Kansas and stop in Hutchinson to go 650 feet underground into the Strataca Salt Mine.

From there, drive west to Denver. There’s lots to do here! Stand a mile high on the Capitol steps, relax in one of the many parks, climb Pikes Peak, and take in the majestic view of the Rocky Mountains.

After you’ve gotten your fill of Denver, it’s time to visit the Dakotas. On the way, you can take a quick detour into Nebraska to stop by Chimney Rock, of Oregon Trail fame.

In the southwest corner of South Dakota you’ll definitely want to stop and see Mount Rushmore. Then drive north to Medora, North Dakota and visit the prairie dogs at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. From here, you’re in a great place to take our final road trip route!

Your Gateway to the West road trip map

Tour the western national parks

Last summer, we took an epic road trip across the US and the final third was comprised mostly of national parks on the western side of the country. We had a blast and saw some incredibly diverse, beautiful terrain.

Start in Glacier National Park and spend a day driving the Going-To-The-Sun Road. Then head to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and be sure to see Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring.

After Yellowstone, stop in at Grand Teton National Park, just south of Yellowstone. We missed this one but hear it’s a must-see.

From there, go south to Zion National Park in Utah and drive through the breathtaking red rocks. Then drive into Arizona and visit the Grand Canyon. You’ll see so many wonders on this trip that you’ll never forget it!

Our top road trip tips

As expert US travelers (we’ve been to 49 of the 50 states — just gotta make it to Alaska!), here are some of our top tips to consider while you plan your road trip:

1. Make a plan but stay flexible

It’s good to know where you plan to be and when, how long it will take to get there, where you plan to stay, and what you want to do while you’re there. Especially in this post-Covid world, a lot of activities require planning ahead.

That being said, leave room for flexibility wherever possible. If we know we’ll be spending the night somewhere on the way to a destination, we won’t book a hotel until we’re almost ready to stop. Sometimes we are able to drive further than planned, and sometimes things come up and we get delayed — like the time it took 7 hours to drive 20 miles in New Mexico!

2. Prep your car

Fill your tires, check the oil, top up the fluids. Give yourself every reason to believe your car will get you from point A to B to C…and home again!

Also, consider getting your car detailed or deep-cleaned ahead of time, and be prepared with paper towels and wet wipes to keep things clean.

3. Stay comfy and entertained in the car

You’ll be seeing some incredible things…but also spending a lot of time just driving down the highway. A pillow and a blanket per person goes a long way, as does trivia games, books, podcasts, and (when all else fails) well-charged devices!

4. Pack light

You need some clothes and your phone. Not much else! Your phone (assuming it’s smart) is your map, your entertainment, and your way out in an emergency. Like I mentioned, toss in a blanket and pillow, maybe some non-screen books and games, and you’re good to go! Oh and snacks. Because is it really a road trip if you don’t have snacks? (No.)

5. Combine touristy attractions with local hidden gems

A Google search can easily tell you the must-do activities in every city you visit, but also visit Atlas Obscura for some more, well, obscure things to see and do!

How to Plan a Road Trip From Start to Finish

W hat’s more American than a road trip ? Like blue jeans and apple pie, it's so embedded in the culture that travelers from around the world plan a road trip just to experience our open highways and byways. From the iconic Route 66 stretching across the heartland to the rugged beauty of the Pacific Coast Highway, the US has no shortage of scenic routes . What sets the American road trip apart is the sheer diversity of experiences on offer, from camping under a star-spangled sky to exploring epic parks like the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone . “Road trips offer an opportunity to venture out and connect with a multitude of people and experiences,” says Samantha Brown , the television host behind Samantha Brown’s Places to Love on PBS. At its most basic, Brown says, road tripping is about freedom.

We asked Brown and a slew of other travel experts to weigh in on planning the perfect route , finding good food and cheap gas, and keeping safety top of mind when hitting the open road. Below, see their best tips on how to plan a road trip so you're never lost, hungry, or bored.

Map your route

The route is the heart and soul of any good road trip. And while there’s a time and place for spontaneous diversions, it’s always smart to head into a long drive with a game plan. To customize a trip with multiple waypoints, use Google Maps’ My Maps feature to create your itinerary. This allows you to add up to 10,000 places of interest, as well as driving directions. (If you use Google Maps without signing in, you’ll be capped at the number of stops you can add.) Veronica E. Garnett, founder of the Black Adventuristas travel group, plots her trips via Google Maps, then uses Waze to get driving directions with live traffic updates and potential road hazards, and TollGuru to calculate fees and see if it’s possible to avoid them altogether. (Note to app minimalists: Google Maps offers similar features.)

If you’re setting out in a recreational vehicle rented from Cruise America , Road Bear , or a peer-to-peer rental site like RVshare , which can deliver rental RVs right to your destination, be mindful of narrow roadways and other potential obstructions. Jason and Rae Miller, founders of the Getaway Couple and Nomadic News , used to travel the country in a fifth wheel travel trailer measuring 42 feet long, eight feet wide, and 13.5 feet tall. “That is right at the legal maximum size for driving on the interstate,” say the Millers, which meant they couldn’t just fire up Google Maps and go on their merry way, since some overpasses were too close to call. Instead, they would plug their destination into the RV LIFE app for turn-by-turn directions that routed them safely around unforeseen obstacles like low-hanging bridges, narrow tunnels, and steep grades. While the Millers recently traded their fifth wheel for a smaller 12-foot-tall truck camper, they still consult the app, along with the travel-planning site RV LIFE Trip Wizard , when sketching out road trips. Cole Reinhardt, vice president of digital strategy at Kampgrounds of America, Inc. , is also a Trip Wizard fan, noting that the tool gives its users “RV-friendly travel routes and details on campgrounds and points of interest, including essential stops such as fuel stations.”

For American drivers trying to plan a road trip outside of the United States, don’t forget to obtain an international driving permit from AAA, says Kim Bennett, founder of the crowd-sourced itinerary platform AtlasGuru . “Sometimes the rental companies ask for this, most often they don’t. But it’s easy to get so I usually do it as a precaution.” Bennett also recommends skimming the trip reports posted by members of the AtlasGuru community. One contributor who road tripped in Hungary recently reminded fellow users that you need to purchase a special pass for the highway; if you fail to do so, you could be fined.

Find good food, cheap gas, and other points of interest

Rule number one of planning a memorable road trip? Get off the interstate. “Research scenic byways for each state and get off the freeway as much as you can,” says Sam Highley, founder of All Roads North , a luxe US road trip planning service. The US Department of Transportation designates National Byways as roads with at least one notable archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, or scenic feature; those with two or more of those qualities are classified as All-American Roads. This comprehensive mapping tool of byways allows users to search by state; each listing includes estimated mileage and driving time, plus notable attractions along the way.

The Millers trumpet GuideAlong, calling it their “new favorite app” for GPS-based narration of national parks. “My favorite feature is that it allows you to listen to your own music but lowers the sounds while [the host] provides tidbits of information or the next navigation step,” says Jason, who RV’d from Key West, Florida to Homer, Alaska last year. (Roaming around Denali National Park was a highlight.)

Before setting out for any major US park, check recreation.gov to see if pre-booking is required, advises Darley Newman , the host, creator, and executive producer of Travels with Darley and Equitrekking on PBS. “Many of these parks now require advance reservations to limit the number of travelers and avoid overtourism,” she says.

For those with no choice but to take major interstates, Brown suggests the iExit app, which provides detailed information about upcoming exits including gas stations, restaurants, and hotels. “This allows you to plan ahead so that you don’t have to settle for fast food,” says Brown. “Instead you might find a local diner just 10 miles down the road.”

Leaving adequate time for hikes —particularly in state parks and local trails—is a good way to “leave 95% of the crowds behind,” as well, says Highley. Brown concurs, plugging the AllTrails app for its detailed hiking maps and terrain notes, safety precautions, trail photos, and user reviews.

When it comes to identifying unique flora and fauna on said hikes, self-described “eager but uneducated naturalist” Highley turns to Merlin Bird ID for birdwatching, PictureThis for plant identification, and SkySafari for stargazing—or for catching celestial phenomena like the recent total solar eclipse .

Google Maps superuser Denise Barlock, an early retiree and Level 10 Local Guide , has reviewed more than 1,300 restaurants, grocery stores, and campsites across the country. “Expenses can add up quickly when you’re on the road,” she says. “So use Google Maps to search gas stations and prices for the best deal near you.” The GasBuddy app , which includes a trip-cost calculator, is another good resource for finding cheap fuel.

Barlock also uses Google Maps to search for local restaurants offering takeout and curbside pickup, plus interesting things to see and do. “You can use the search bar for specific things like ‘scenic spots,’ ‘waterfall,’ or ‘trailhead,’” she says, adding that the more detailed your search request is (like “oceanfront RV campground” or “kayak rental daily rate”), the better the results. The Explore tab surfaces events happening nearby, as well as curated lists of local recommendations, and the Save tab lets you favorite places you’ve already been and flag places you want to go in the future. Once you’ve plotted everything on your map, download it for offline usage before you take off; you’ll thank yourself later if your reception cuts out.

Have special dietary considerations? Black Adventurista member Holly McGuinn of Queens, New York , uses the HappyCow app to sleuth out the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants on the road. With more than 220,000 listings in its global database, it also covers bakeries, health food stores, farmers markets, and juice bars. TVFoodMaps has drummed up thousands of as-seen-on-TV restaurants featured on popular shows such as Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Man v. Food, while Jane and Michael Stern’s Roadfood spotlights authentic regional cuisine at mom-and-pop restaurants. And nothing beats the 1,000-plus “wondrous” eats detailed on Gastro Obscura , a worldwide dossier for adventurous foodies.

If you’re looking for roadside photo ops, Gastro’s parent site, Atlas Obscura , is unmatched for finding offbeat things to see, from the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota to a psychedelic mirror maze in San Francisco . Outdated as the website is, Roadside America is also chock-a-block with quirky attractions—and surfable in app form too.

For a little history, follow the lead of Jasmin Hogan, a San Antonio-based member of the Black Adventuristas, who once drove an extra 600 miles to turn a road trip from Maryland to Texas into “an epic African-American history journey.” She and her sister hit up historic sites and museums dedicated to Black history and ate at Black-owned restaurants .

Florida , Louisiana , Alabama , New Hampshire , and other states have notable Black heritage trails. The National Park Service made a list of places featured in its short film, “ Twenty & Odd ,” exploring 400 years of African American history; highlights include Fort Monroe National Monument in Virginia and Georgia’s Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park . Put safety first

Not everyone has the privilege of traveling where they want, when they want. LGBTQ+ and BIPOC travelers, as well as individuals with accessibility concerns , may wish to take additional precautions.

Wheelchair Travel compiles accessible travel resources, including rentals for wheelchair vans and medical equipment, and publishes wheelchair-friendly city guides . The National Park Service also provides information about accessible experiences within each park ; navigate to the “Plan Your Visit” tab for additional info.

Human Rights Campaign’s State Maps of Laws & Policies is designed to help LGBTQ+ travelers determine the potential risk of certain routes. Users can search the map by issue, surfacing states with laws that address hate or bias crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Refuge Restrooms , another app and online database searchable by location, helps transgender and gender-nonconforming people find safe bathrooms, even in rural areas.

Victor H. Green, a Black postal worker from Harlem, published a guides series called The Negro Travelers’ Green Book from 1936 to 1967; it was essential reading for Black motorists because it told them where they could safely eat, sleep, and gas up in Jim Crow’s America. Today, The Post-Racial Negro Green Book , compiled in 2018 by New Orleans-based writer Jan Miles, replaces the Black-friendly hotel and diner listings of yore with a state-by-state index of 21st-century racial bias against African Americans—documenting incidents of police brutality and harassment.

Lastly, anyone hitting the road should also be mindful of the growing number of wildfires impacting US travel, says Highley, who relies on the Watch Duty app to monitor developing conditions.

Book accommodations in advance

There are tons of sites out there to help you find the perfect pit stop along your route. Look for hotels or Airbnbs with flexible cancellation policies; sites like Travelocity have filters for exactly this. Campendium is a solid app for finding RV and tent campsites, and Brown calls the HotelTonight app a “lifesaver” for last-minute hotel bookings. “When I need a hotel quickly, I don’t want to sift through hundreds of options,” she says. “I just want the top five in my price range.”

If you just want a refresher stop, McGuinn recommends Dayuse , an app lets you rent a hotel room—and all its accompanying amenities, like the swimming pool and fitness center—by the hour or multi-hour block, with rates up to 75% off an overnight stay.

When Highley and his team are tailor-making a road trip for All Roads North, they try to understand a client’s primary motivation for traveling—a strategy useful for all road trippers. “It might be that they have a specific interest or region they want to explore, but equally want to connect with family, disconnect from work, or challenge themselves,” says Highley. “When you start the conversation in terms of experiences and emotions, rather than simply places to see and things to do, we are able to plan a much more rewarding trip.”

He’s also a big proponent of the less-is-more ethos: Spend more time in fewer places and really dig deep. By connecting travelers with wildlife biologists, Navajo musicians, astrologers, art collectors, rising chefs, and other local experts, they’re able to build an enriching itinerary that would be hard to orchestrate on one’s own.

Most importantly, adds Newman, just “roll with it.” Every road trip will have its hiccups. “Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten path,” she says. “Some of the best travel experiences can be unplanned.”

If you’ve got an EV, Google Maps is about to become much more valuable

New updates address one of americans’ top concerns about owning an electric car: finding a place to charge.

Google has announced new features in its Maps app designed to help electric-car drivers find a charge.

The updates include a tool to help drivers find nearby chargers with real-time information about availability and charging speed, the ability to find charging stops on longer road trips and more detailed instructions about how to find chargers within parking lots and garages.

Google expects to start rolling out these features “in the coming months,” according to a blog post. Some will come first to people who drive a car that comes with “Google Built-in,” the company’s driver-assistance software. Google updated its other route-finding app, Waze, with information on EV chargers last month.

The update addresses one of Americans’ top concerns about owning an electric vehicle: finding a place to charge. Range anxiety remains a significant barrier for EV sales — especially for drivers who don’t own a house . Among people who don’t drive an EV, roughly half say they think finding a place to charge would be “extremely” or “very” difficult, according to a 2023 Washington Post-University of Maryland poll .

EVs make up roughly 7 percent of new U.S. car sales, which some experts believe is a tipping point at which electric cars will quickly become popular and take over the market. But lately, the EV market appears to be cooling off . Sales slowed in the first quarter of this year.

In addition to building more charging stations, companies can make driving an EV easier by building apps that help drivers find chargers, said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, director of Industry Insights at Cox Automotive. “That could be really helpful with mitigating some of those concerns about charging anxiety,” she said.

Find available EV charging stations

For electric-car drivers who need a last-minute charge, Google is developing a feature that can find nearby chargers with updated information about how many ports are available and their charging speed. The company says this feature will eventually be available to all drivers but will be available first for drivers with Google Built-in.

Plan a road trip with EV charging stops

The Maps update will allow EV owners with Google Built-in to plan where they can power up when taking long trips with multiple stops, such as a cross-country road trip. The feature will access information about your car’s battery life to suggest the best places to charge up.

The company also announced a search feature that allows travelers to look for hotels with electric-car chargers.

Locate hard-to-find EV charging stations

Some EV chargers are tucked in hard-to-find corners of parking garages. The Maps updates will crowdsource information from Google reviewers to generate more detailed instructions about how to get to a charger. According to the company’s blog post, the instructions might read something like, “Enter the underground parking lot and follow the signs toward the exit. Just before exiting, turn right.”

M25 closure: Everything you need to know ahead of motorway closing in both directions again

The UK's busiest motorway is shutting in both directions again next month across a seven-mile stretch between junctions 9 and 10 and diversions will be in place. Here's what you need to know about how bad traffic could be, the alternative route and why it's happening.

Drivers are set to face significant delays as a section of the M25 shuts in both directions next month for the second time.

There was a two mile-long traffic jam when the motorway's first-ever planned daytime closure began on 15 March between junctions 10 and 11 in Surrey - though many drivers followed advice to steer clear of the area until it reopened late on 17 March, meaning long hold-ups were widely avoided .

This time it's junctions 9 and 10 that will be shut both ways and the stretch of road is two miles longer than last time.

Those set to be those travelling to, from and between the UK's two busiest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, are expected to be affected as National Highways has warned it expects long delays.

But is traffic expected to be worse than it was the first time, what are the diversion routes this time and will there be more closures after this one?

It's from 9pm on Friday 10 May until 6am on Monday 13 May and will see a seven-mile stretch between junctions 9 and 10 closed - two miles more than in March.

What are the diversion routes?

Though there were fears of severe congestion on diversion routes along A-roads ahead of the first closure, many drivers followed advice to avoid the area, meaning long hold-ups were avoided.

But National Highways senior project manager Jonathan Wade has warned the next shutdown will be "far from a repeat of the previous closure" as the diversion routes are "longer and will be different for over-height vehicles and all other traffic".

Here are the 19-mile diversion routes, which use the A3 and the A243:

Diversion route clockwise for all but over-height vehicles: Leave M25 at junction 8, A217 (Reigate). Follow the A217 London, Sutton, (A240) Kingston. After 3½ miles turn left onto the A240 Epsom, Kingston. After 3 miles at the Esso roundabout, turn right onto the A24 (A240) Kingston. Continue for 3 miles and turn left onto the A3 Portsmouth, Guildford. Continue for 9½ miles to the M25 and re-join the motorway at junction 10.

Diversion route anticlockwise for all but over-height vehicles: Leave M25 at junction 10 to join the A3 towards London. After 9½ miles at the Hook interchange leave the A3 turning right onto the A240 Epsom, Reigate. Continue for 3 miles to the Esso roundabout and turn left onto the A240 Reigate. Continue for 3 miles then turn right onto the A217 Reigate, M25. After 3½ miles turn left to re-join the M25 motorway at junction 8.

Satnav warnings

Drivers are again being urged to ignore satnavs and only follow official diversion routes to prevent causing gridlock.

Mr Wade said: "Drivers listened to our advice last time which reduced motorway traffic levels by over two-thirds and meant delays were limited.

"Our advice again is please only travel if absolutely necessary and make sure you give yourself extra time if you do choose to use the M25."

Ahead of the last closure, he warned: "There's probably a greater risk of congestion by people just doing their own thing and thinking they can perhaps beat the signs and find a shorter or quicker route.

"That will cause further congestion on some of the key junctions so please avoid doing that if at all possible."

National Highways senior project manager Daniel Kittredge said: "If people move away from diversion routes that we prescribe, it creates additional issues in different parts of the road network.

"Stick on the prescribed diversion route. It's going to be more suitable for your journey."

How bad could it be?

It's only the second scheduled daytime all-lanes shutdown on the M25 since it opened in 1986, so the full extent of possible delays is not entirely clear.

The stretch between J9 and J11 is normally used by 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles in each direction every hour from 10am until 9pm at weekends.

And because the stretch of closed road is longer this time, the diversion route is also 7.5 miles longer than the one last month.

It's not only drivers who feel the effects; business owners along the diversion route during the last closure said they were forced to make cuts to their services in anticipation of traffic.

Airport warnings

People due to travel to Gatwick and Heathrow could be affected by the closure. Sky News has contacted both airports for comment on the latest disruption.

Last time, Heathrow Airport advised passengers planning to use the affected route to allow for extra time before their flight.

"Passengers using public transport should also be aware that The Airline (between Heathrow and Gatwick) and RailAir (RA2), will be running amended timetables over this weekend, please check with your operator for the latest information," their statement said.

In March, a London Gatwick Airport spokesperson said: "Passengers driving to the airport are advised to check diversion routes before they travel and allow extra time for potential delays.

"Gatwick's train station is well-connected and is a great alternative option for people travelling to the airport this weekend."

Why is it happening?

Government-owned company National Highways said the action is necessary to enable a bridge to be demolished and a new gantry to be installed as part of a £317m improvement project.

National Highways says the project will increase the number of lanes and make it easier to enter and exit the M25 at junction 10, which is one of the UK's busiest and most dangerous motorway junctions.

"These improvements will bring long-term benefits to drivers who pass through this stretch of the M25, not to mention pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders who will also see positive changes in the area," Mr Wade said.

Is this the last closure?

No - it's the second of five planned full closures between the junctions. The other dates have not yet been confirmed.

National Highways has said it intends to close the M25 for three more weekends this year.

"There will be no weekend closures in June," it said in a statement.

"The remaining closures will take place between July and the end of 2024. We will be in a position to announce the date of the next closure as soon as the May closure is over."

The project began in summer 2022 and is expected to last three years in total.

London Marathon 2024: Date, route map, road closures and how to watch

Runners will wend their way from greenwich park to the mall passing some of the city's most famous landmarks from tower bridge and the cutty sark to the big ben and buckingham palace.

This Sunday the capital will play host to the 44th London Marathon – an event which sees elite athletes and amateur runners alike make their way round a 26.2-mile route of the city.

It started in 1981 with 6,255 runners crossing the finish line. By 2016, more than a million had completed the course. And this year will see more than 50,000 people taking part.

Seven world records have been broken in the history of the event, including elite runner Paula Radcliffe’s historic time of 2:15:25 in 2003.

Aside from the sporting achievements, it has also become the largest annual one-day fundraising event in the world, with the total raised for charities in the history of the event surpassing £1bn in 2019.

Last year’s event raised a total of £63m for charities, the highest since 2019.

When is the 2024 London Marathon?

This year’s TCS London Marathon will be held on Sunday 21 April.

Elite wheelchair athletes will begin their race at 8.50am followed by the elite women at 9am and elite men at 9.40am.

For the rest of the participants, it will be a staggered start between 10am and 11.30am.

What is the marathon route?

The world-famous 26.2-mile TCS London Marathon route has remained largely unchanged since the first event in 1981, with runners passing many of the capital’s landmarks on route including the Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament.

Starting in Greenwich Park in Blackheath, south of the River Thames, competitors will wend their way past the iconic Cutty Sark, over Tower Bridge, through the tower blocks of Canary Wharf, back through the city and along Victoria Embankment by the Palace of Westminster before ending up on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

There are three colour-coded start lines (blue, green or red) near Greenwich Park, depending on runners’ expected finish times. The Red Start is located at southern Greenwich Park on Charlton Way, the Green Start can be found at St John’s Park, and the Blue Start is on Shooter’s Hill Road.

Which roads will be closed?

Such a massive event on the streets of the capital means there will be a number of road closures throughout the day in different areas of the city as runners make their way around the route.

South of the river :

Construction work taking place at Blackheath Station means four additional roads will be closed this year: Southvale Road, Hurren Close, Collins Street, and Baizdon will be closed from 7am to 1pm.

Charlton Way and Shooters Hill Road will be closed from 4am to 1pm.

Charlton Park Road, St John’s Park, Old Dover Road, Little Heath, Charlton Park Lane , Artillery Place and John Wilson Street will be closed from 7am to 1pm.

Woolwich Church Street and Woolwich Road will be closed from 7am to 2pm.

Trafalgar and Creek Road will be closed from 7am until 3pm.

Evelyn Street, Surrey Quays Road, Salter Road, Brunel Road and Jamaica Road will be closed from 8am to 4pm.

Tower Bridge will be closed from 8am until 7pm.

North of the river :

The Highway (south side), narrow Street, Westferry Road, East Ferry Road and Marsh Wall, North Colonnade, Poplar High Street, Commerical Road and The Highway (north side) will be closed from 8am to 7pm.

Byward Street, Upper Thames Street and Victoria Embankment will be closed from 7.30am until 8.30pm.

The Mall and Marlborough Road will be closed from 5am on Thursday 18th April until 6pm on Monday 22 April.

Spur Road, Constitution Hill, Horseguards Road and Birdcage Walk (eastbound) will be closed from 6am on Friday 19 April until 6am on Monday 22 April.

Birdcage Walk (westbound) will be closed from 7.30am Saturday 20 April until 6am Monday 22 April.

The route takes in some of the city’s most famous landmarks and spectators are welcome to watch from almost anywhere along the 26.2-mile stretch.

If you plump for The Highway, you will see the runners go past twice and if you stand on Tower Bridge you will see them at almost the halfway mark.

Some parts of the route, such as close to the Cutty Sark and St James’ Park do get very busy on Marathon Day.

For spectators with disabilities, there are accessible viewing areas at: the Cutty Sark, Canary Wharf, Rainbow Row, Tower Hill and Victoria Embankment.

You can also track the progress of any friends or loved ones taking part using the TCS London Marathon app.

For those who prefer to watch from the comfort of home, television coverage will be on BBC One from 8.30am until 2pm, then on BBC Two from 2pm to 3pm with highlights shown on BBC Two at 6pm.

There will also be two live streams from Tower Bridge and the Finish Line on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport app . Tower Bridge cam runs from 11.30am to 2.30pm and the Finish Line cam runs from 1pm to 6pm.

There will be closures right across the route of the London Marathon occurring at separate times throughout the day.

London Underground on marathon day

The  London Underground , London Overground and Docklands Light Railway are running extra services throughout marathon day and are recommended as the best way to get around to keep up with the race action.

Due to the nature of the day, expect services to be busy with crowds of spectators along the route.

Stops near the Marathon route are likely to be very busy, especially the Jubilee, Circle and District lines, and the DLR.

Transport for London is encouraging everyone to plan their journeys in advance and check the  TfL website  or TfL Go app for the latest travel information.

Buses on marathon day

Bus routes along the route of the marathon will either be diverted or will not run the length of their usual journey until the roads are back open.

If travelling by bus on the day, visit  tfl.gov.uk/bus/status  to see if your bus route is affected.

What time does the London Marathon start?

The race will kick off at around 8.30am with professional athletes leading the way.

The rest of the runners will then set off in waves from rom 10am to 11.30am, with gaps in between to allow the course ahead to clear. All start lines will be closed by 11.30am. 

Start waves and times are allocated based on runners’ predicted finish time, which will have been given to organisers ahead of time.

Boston Marathon 2024 road closures to know for today's race

BOSTON – Monday marks Patriots' Day , which means it's time for the 2024 Boston Marathon . That also means there will be a long list of streets all along the marathon route that will be closed to traffic. Parking will also be restricted for days in many spots.

When will roads open back up after the marathon?

Below is a town-by-town look at road closures and when they will reopen.

On Marathon Monday , roads surrounding the start line and town common (Including Main Street, Ash Street, Park Street, and Hayden Rowe) will close at 6:30 a.m. After that, all other roads leading into the downtown area will be closed to traffic at 7 a.m. 

Major roads leading into the downtown area will be blocked at the following locations:

• West Main Street at Lumber Street
• Wood Street at Elm Street
• Hayden Rowe Street at Chestnut
• Ash Street at Blueberry Lane
• Cedar Street at Legacy Farms North
• East Main Street at every intersection

Additionally, roads adjacent to where runners and spectators are located will be blocked.

Road closures are scheduled in Ashland the area of Route 135 from 6:15 a.m. - 1:20 p.m.

Route 135 (Waverly Street) closed Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Route 135 closed 8:30 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Marathon runners enter Wellesley on Central Street (Route 135) at the Natick line, in the area of Wellesley College. Police will close roads at 8:30 a.m. and they remain closed until all runners pass through Wellesley at around 3:30 p.m.

Road closures include

• Central Street from the Natick line to Grove Street
• Washington Street from Grove Street to the Newton line 

Several roads will be closed from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Marathon route:

• Washington Sttreet from the Wellesley line to Auburn Street
• Commonwealth Ave. from Auburn Street to the Boston line
• Commonwealth Ave. Carriage Lane from Washington Street to the Boston line
• All feeder streets along the marathon route will be closed 60 feet back from the course

Secondary roads:

• Beacon Street from Washington Street to Dorset Road
• Beacon Street Extension (North of Washington Street)
• Beacon Street from Hammond Street to Boston line (Residents only) 
• Centre Street from Homer Street to Ward Street
• Chestnut Street from Beacon Street to Highland Street (Residents only)
• College Road from Beacon Street to Commonwealth Ave.
• Concord Street from Hagar to Washington Street
• Evelyn Road from 192 Evelyn Road to Fuller Street
• Fuller Street from Day Street to Evelyn Road (Residents only)
• Grant Ave from Beacon Street to Ward Street (Residents only)
• Grove Street from Washington to Moulton Street
• Hammond Street from Ward to Hammondswood Road
• Helene Road/ Cotter Road from Paulson to Fuller
• Homer Street rom Commonwealth Ave. to Centre Street·

• Old Colony Road from Priscilla to Commonwealth Ave.
• Quinobequin Road from I-95 southbound ramp to Washington Street

The following roads will be closed approximately 8 a.m.to 4:45 p.m.

• Beacon Street
• Chestnut Hill Ave. at Clinton Road and Dean Road
• Washington Street at Park Street
• Harvard Street at Longwood Ave. and Sewall Ave.
• Saint Paul Street at Longwood Ave.
• Sewall Ave. at Marshall Street

Boston parking restrictions

Parking meters are free for the day, but parking will be restricted on several streets in the Back Bay on Monday and Saturday. Parking will also be restricted on some streets several days in advance of the weekend to allow preparations to take place. Parking restrictions are as follows.

No Stopping April 8 - April 18

• Exeter Street (east side) Boylston Street to Blagden Street
• Blagden Street (south side, opposite side of library), from Huntington Avenue to Exeter Street
• Blagden Street (north side, library side), BPL Driveway to Exeter Street

Marathon Monday MBTA changes

Copley Station will be closed all day on Marathon Monday. In addition, South Street, Kent Street, and Saint Mary's Street stations will be closed from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The MBTA said it could make additional adjustments or temporary closures at additional stations near the finish line.

Green, Red, Orange, Blue and Silver line trains will run on weekday schedules. Additional service will be offered before and after the race.

Commuter Rail trains on the Worcester Line will have a special Marathon Monday schedule. As a result, there will be additional inbound and outbound trains. Other Commuter Rail lines will be operated on normal weekday schedules.

The Copley Square bus stop located on St. James Ave. is out of service through Tuesday, April 16. Riders will be redirected to the bus stop on St. James Ave. at Clarendon Street, the MBTA said.

On Marathon Monday, Routes 55 and 65 will be suspended all day. Route 1 will run from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on an increased Saturday schedule. Routes 9, 10, 39, 43, 51, 57, 62, and 76 with either be shortened or detoured. Routes 354 and 501 will be operating on a weekday schedule.

The RIDE and all ferries will operate on regular weekday schedules. The only impact could be potential detours for The RIDE to accommodate any potential marathon-related events.

Bicycles are not allowed on the MBTA all day on Monday.

Riders are encouraged to load their CharlieCard or CharlieTIcket with enough money early in the day. The MBTA asks people to pay with a credit or debit card to reduce lines at stations.

The MBTA said it does not recommend driving to the finish line or other viewing areas due to the lengthy list of parking restrictions. Instead, riders are asked to park at an MBTA station and take the T or Commuter Rail in.

Parking rates range from $2-$15.
