Looking for all the best things to do in North Bali ? We’ve got you covered! In this guide, I share all of the top places to see in the North of Bali. As well as where to stay, how to get around, and all of our top tips!

After visiting the North of Bali and discovering all there is to see, we were left wondering why it’s often left off of the hotlist. We found so many cool things to do in North of Bali!

From chasing waterfalls and climbing volcanoes to cruising along some of the most picturesque landscapes on the island – everything about the North screams adventure.

Not only that, it’s far less crowded than the South of Bali. Which, in our opinion, makes exploring a far more enjoyable experience.

As I say, you won’t be short of things to do. So let’s get into the North Bali itinerary you came here for.

North Bali Guide - Where to Stay

While the North of Bali isn’t as popular as the South, it’s certainly more built-up than the likes of Amed in Eastern Bali . So regardless of your budget, you won’t struggle for a place to stay.

There are a couple of areas in North Bali that you might want to consider. Here’s a short description to help you decide where you might want to be:

Lovina Dolphins North Bali

Lovina is the main tourist town in the North of Bali, famous for black sand beaches and dolphin spotting. You’ll find many types of hotels in Lovina, ranging from budget hostels to high-end resorts. We stayed at Hotel Suma and would highly recommend it.

Check rates and availability for accommodation in Lovina here .

Unmissable Things to do in North Bali

If you consider yourself more of a jungle lover than the beach, Munduk is an ideal choice in Northern Bali. Set around 45-minutes South of Lovina, the area is lush, green, and quiet, boasting some of Bali’s most instagrammable hotels . Like the Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa .

Check rates and availability for accommodation in Munduk here .

mayo resort north bali

Further West of Lovina is Seririt – A beachside town that rarely sees any tourists and is relatively close to all the top things to do in North Bali. We stayed at the beautiful Mayo resort .

Check rates and availability for accommodation in Seririt here .

You can also check out many other accommodation options here . Or use the Map below to see all your options:

Have you got your travel Visa sorted?

Visas can be complicated, there are different requirements for different nationalities and even then there's a selection of Visas depending on the duration of your stay. Check if you need one using the button below. It's free, and you can retrieve a quote at the same time. It’s simple, fast and reliable.

North Bali Itinerary - Things to do in North Bali

Captivating waterfalls, volcanic beaches, and stunning religious sites make up the best things to do in North Bali. Here are 18 ideas to help you plan your trip.

1. Sekumpul Waterfall

Sekumpul & Fiji Waterfalls in Bali

When you search for anything to do with waterfalls in Bali, Sekumpul tends to top the list every time. So we’ll start this North Bali guide here.

Many describe this waterfall as the most impressive in Bali, and there’s no doubt that the momentous triple falls are a sight to behold.

With water cascading from an almighty 80-metres high into the lagoon below, and dense green vines adorning the cliff face it feels like a scene straight out of Avatar.

Tip – We go into the pros and cons of both options in this guide for Sekumpul Waterfall . Either way, if you plan to chase waterfalls in North Bali, Sekumpul should be at the top of your list.

2. Fiji Waterfall

Fiji Waterfall north bali

Just minutes away from Sekumpul Waterfall lay the majestic Fiji Falls. Set in the same lush jungle environment, it’s equally as impressive.

Our only complaint about the Sekumpul and Fiji waterfalls is the steep entrance fees. It’s not so bad if you just visit the viewpoint at 20,000 IDR/pp.

However, a recent regulation (ahem, scam), insists that a guide must accompany visitors who want to trek to the bottom of the waterfalls.

The result: A steep fee of 200,000 IDR/pp and unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any way around it.

3. Gitgit Waterfall

gitgit waterfall North Bali

At a tremendous height of 35-metre, Gitgit is one of the tallest and most powerful waterfalls in Bali.

Set in a real jungle paradise environment, Gitgit has all the feels of an off-the-beaten-path adventure. When, in fact, it’s located an easy 15-minute walk from the main road.

Gitgit is the ideal spot to take a dip, chill out, and admire nature. However, we would encourage you to visit early should you want to avoid the crowds.

The entrance fee for Gitgit is 20,000 IDR/pax.

4. Aling Aling Waterfall

Aling Aling Waterfall north bali

If you’re seeking a real adventure in North Bali, you absolutely cannot miss Aling Aling Waterfall.

Famed for its impressive collection of waterfalls, countless natural pools, water slides, and daredevil cliff jumping opportunities, this is one of our favourite things to do in North Bali. With so much to see and do at Aling Aling, it would be easy to k!ll an entire day here and not get bored.

It’s important to mention that if you want to take part in cliff jumping at Aling Aling and all the other adventurous stuff, you will need to pay for a guide. Unlike Sekumpul & Fiji Waterfalls, it’s an absolute necessity here for your own safety.

Tip – You can read everything you need to know about this waterfall in our complete guide to Aling Aling Waterfall .

5. Munduk Waterfall

Munduk Waterfall North Bali

Munduk waterfall is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in North Bali and not ideal for swimming; however, if you’re in the area, it’s worth stopping by all the same.

Located in the mountainous region of Munduk, you can expect an impressive waterfall amid lush jungle conditions. As a result of its unpopularity, it’s highly likely you’ll have the place all to yourself.

It’s an easy trek to reach the falls, and as I say, you can’t swim, so you won’t need much time here at all. Enjoy the leisurely pace and serene conditions before making your way to Banyumala Waterfall, which is next on our list.

6. Banyumala Waterfall

Banyumala Waterfall

Making quite a name for itself on the North Bali Waterfall route, Banyumala is an impressive set of falls in the mountainous region of Munduk.

This hidden gem is quickly becoming one of the top things to do in North Bali. If you don’t mind the relatively difficult trek to reach Banyumala Falls, your reward will be a striking double waterfall cascading down a vine infested cliff face.

The falls have formed a crystalised natural pool at the bottom, ideal for cooling off after the arduous trek down.

7. Mount Batur for Sunrise

mount batur sunrise

Next up in our North Bali Giude is Mount Batur. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of accomplishing something while most people are still in bed. So how about climbing Mount Batur for sunrise – a 1700 metre high active volcano.

I have to admit, getting out of bed to make our way to base camp at 2 am was less than appealing. However, the magical moment of experiencing sunrise atop an active volcano was the ultimate reward.

If you are to drag yourself out of bed for only one sunrise during your time in Bali, I strongly suggest it be this one.

Tip – You can read everything you need to know about this hike in our complete guide climbing Mount Batur for sunrise .

8. Dolphin Spotting

Many are surprised to learn that dolphin spotting is one of the popular things to do in North Bali – us included!

When we heard about this activity, we were really excited. I mean, who doesn’t want to see these majestic & playful animals in their own habitat. They’re like the puppies of the sea.

There is a fine line between ethical animal tourism and unethical; so please do your research first.

9. Black Sand Beaches

Black Sand Beach North Bali

  • Follow us on Instagram

The black sand is said to have originated from Mount Agung – Bali’s most notorious volcano. The volcanic shoreline stretches from Amed, all along the East Coast and up to Seriret in the North.

Lovina is the most popular black sand beach in North Bali. You’ll find various beachside bars and restaurants along this stretch as well as water sports and other activities.

If you prefer somewhere a little quieter, you can head further west towards Seriret. You should also seriously consider heading to Amed in East Bali if you haven’t already.

Tip – You can read everything you need to know about Bali’s black sand beaches here .

10. Banjar Hot Springs

Banjar Hot Springs North Bali

There are various ‘natural’ hot springs dotted around Bali; however, most are unauthentic and incredibly touristic.

We found Banjar Hot Springs to be the complete opposite, with mostly locals bathing in the cleansing waters of the holy springs. The 38-degree hot springs are centuries old.

The temperature of the water combined with the sulphuric properties is said to be excellent for your skin and health in general.

11. Brahma Vihara Arama Monastery

Brahma Vihara Arama Monastery Bali

One of our favourite hidden gems and unique things to do in North Bali, Brahma Vihara Arama Monastery is the only Buddhist monastery on the island.

Set in the mountains of North Bali, the complex consists of various gardens, meditation rooms, and religious statues, as well as a striking view over the surrounding landscapes. We were also surprised to find a similar design to the Instagram-Famous Gateway to Heaven , only without the crowds!

Perhaps the most impressive feature of the monastery is the replication of Borobudur Temple. Located in Java, Indonesia,  Borobudur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Buddhist Temple in the world.

Tip – You can read everything you need to know about Brahma Vihara Arama Monastery here .

12. Ulun Danu Water Temple

Ulun Danu Water Temple North Bali

It may be touristic as hell, but we couldn’t exclude this from our North Bali Guide… there’s no denying the sheer magnificence of the Ulun Danu Water Temple .

The ‘floating’ Hindu temple, built in the middle of Tamblingan Lake is iconic to Bali thanks to Instagram. As a result, it’s one of the first things people want to do when they visit the island.

It’s good to note that rising water levels influence the appearance of the temple. If there hasn’t been a lot of rain, the ‘floating’ effect isn’t as noticeable.

13. Wanagiri Hidden Hills

tour in north bali

If you’re on Instagram, the likelihood is you’ve come across the Wanagiri Hidden Hills on a few thousand separate occasions.

The infamous Bali Swing and bamboo viewing platforms are the epitomai of gimmicky; however, there’s no denying that the stunning backdrop makes for a spectacular photo.

Even if it’s for the view alone, it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area. Go on, do it for the ‘gram.

14. Immerse in Local Culture

Bali culture

One of the things we loved most about the North of Bali is being in the heart of traditional Balinese culture.

Particularly driving around the areas surrounding Munduk and Seriret, you often find yourself passing quaint local villages who rarely see tourists.

We love stopping off in these places and buying a drink or a bite to eat, as you always end up getting way more from the exchange than just a refreshment.  One of the most soul nourishing things to do in North Bali.

It’s part and parcel of the Balinese culture to be accepting and welcoming, so don’t be shy of starting a conversation. You’ll likely end up with friends for life.

15. Snorkelling & Scuba Diving

Snorkelling & Scuba Diving Bali

Some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving sites are in North Bali. Menjangan Island which is famous for its drop-off and coral garden, and Tulamben wreck.

A diving day trip to Menjangan Island is quite a popular activity from the North of Bali. Alternatively you could stay in the National Park for a night or 2; there are some beautiful resorts around, such as Menjangan Dynasty Resort and NusaBay Menjangan , as well as various homestays.

16. Bali Coffee Plantations

Bali Coffee Plantations

Due to cooler climates in the mountainous region of North Bali, it’s the ideal conditions for growing all kinds of fresh produce.

Most of the island’s fruit and vegetables are grown in these areas, as well as the delicious Balinese coffee. As a matter of fact, coffee plantations take up an unbelievably vast amount of space in the Munduk area.

The biggest and most-popular plantation is the Munduk Moding Coffee Plantation .

17. Stay at Munduk Moding Plantation

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by KELLY + KODY (@positravelty) on Apr 6, 2019 at 7:31am PDT

While we are on the subject of Munduk Moding Plantation, it’s worth mentioning (again), the incredible hotel resort they have here.

The pinnacle of the mountain top property is the infinity pool overlooking the landscapes of North Bali. Rolling green hills and rice paddies stretch as far as the eye can see.

Oh, and if you rise & shine early, you’re in for one of the best sunrise views in Bali.

Check rates and availability for Munduk Moding Plantation here.

18. Handara Gate

Handara Gate Bali

Last up in our North Bali itinerary is another spot that owes thanks for its popularity to Instagram is Handara Gate.

The landmark is often mistaken for a religious site or historical point of interest. When in fact, the picture-perfect gate is actually just the entrance to a luxury golf course in Munduk.

Nowadays, entrepreneurial locals make a business from the gate alone, charging tourists 30,000 IDR for the ‘selfie’ ticket.

This gets you a spot in the often hours-long queue, where groups of people scramble for the same perfect shot. It’s madness really, but again, a beautiful place to take a photo.

How to Get to North Bali

Getting around in Bali can be an expensive ordeal. There is little to no public transport, and tourist buses are unheard of. Consequently, taxis, hiring drivers , or renting a car in Bali is often your only option.

If you can drive a scooter, this will be the cheapest and most convenient way to get around. Renting a scooter in Bali will set you back around 60,000 IDR per day.

Thankfully, the roads in Bali are for the most part in good condition and offer some scenic drives. The journey to North Bali, in particular, is incredibly picturesque as you pass through the heart of the Balinese jungle.

Top Tips for North Bali

Here are some useful tips that I hope will enhance your travel experience in North Bali.

How Long to Stay in North Bali

We stayed in North Bali for almost a week. It isn’t necessary to be there that long, but we extended our visa at the Singaraja office, which meant we had to stay locally.

You could probably cover most of the highlights over 2-3 days. But if you wanted to take your time, 4-5 days would be perfect.

10 Days in Bali

Extending your Visa in North Bali

In our experience, the Singaraja Immigration Office in North Bali is the fastest place on the island to extend your visa. If you purchased a visa on arrival when arriving at Bali airport, you are eligible to extend for up to 30-days. For more information, check out our article on getting a visa extension in Bali .

Best Time to Visit North Bali

The best time to visit Bali will be in the dry season, which runs from April to late September. While there is always a chance of an odd rainy day, you generally see warm and dry conditions during this time.

Having said that, the best time to visit the waterfalls in North Bali is usually between March and May just as the wet season is drawing to a close.

That’s because all the rainfall causes the rivers to overflow, resulting in some pretty damn ferocious waterfalls. Of course, they are still well-worth visiting in the dry season; however, this is just our personal preference.

It’s also worth mentioning that July and August are considered the high season in Bali, and consequently, prices are higher, and everything is busier.

Getting Around in North Bali

Unless you are confident on a scooter, getting around North Bali could prove a little tricky.

With no public transportation, and from what we could tell no Grab or GoJek, your only option is to hire a driver.

This offer for a  Private Car or Minibus Charter is highly competitive relative to local transport companies. Click the link to read thousands of positive reviews, check the latest prices, and to make a booking.

Hi guys, thank you for watching my part 6 of my Bali journey. Today I will explore with you the North of this super beautiful island. If you google, you will see that Bali is very large and when you go to Bali, you will usually focus on the central areas of Denpasar and Jimbaran, Ubud but forget that the North of the island has many beautiful attractions, really worth visiting. Partly because you often go for a short time, so you don’t have time to explore them all, so I will summarize for you the places I discovered in this article. North Bali travel guide: How to go to the Northern Bali?

As mentioned above to you, the North is quite far and to get here, you can take a taxi or grab for a rather expensive price. Or rent a motorbike for a few days to explore and backpack properly because the road has many sections with winding passes for the backpackers to “ride”.

tour in north bali

However, always be careful if you ride a motorbike because in Bali, the means of transport will go in the left hand direction, if you don’t get used to driving, it is very dangerous, unfamiliar roads are also a big obstacle. You also have to go through many steep passes, so remember to rent a manual motorcycle, not a scooter. The day I went, my driver say that a week before I came, there was an Indian family who rented a scooter and lost the brake when going down the hill, so the whole family fell down the cliff to death, a tragic accident, so sad. So this is an economical plan but I do not recommend.

tour in north bali

In my opinion, if you plan to explore the North, you should spend 2~3 days at least and there are many beautiful stops along the way, so rent a 7-seater car per day (common service in Bali), if you go in a group of 7 or 8 people, sharing is not expensive.

During my trip, I hired it from my friend Awan (FB: https://www.facebook.com/imade.rudiawan ) who drive all the full day trips in Bali. The deal was quoted by him for 700,000 IDR/day for the trip to the North including fuel and parking fees. If you tell the drivers in advance, they are not allowed to take you to shopping stores or force to eat at the place they choose, because many drivers with cheap prices and they will force you go to shop or eat.

Normally, if you go around the center of Bali, the price is about 550,000/day, but because the way to the north is far, the road is zigzag, so they ask for 700,000 IDR to go. I asked a lot of drivers for the price to choose the cheapest Mr. Awan, you can just inbox and talk – he’s quite enthusiastic and good-natured.

North bali blog: What to do in Northern Bali & things to do in Northern Bali

The north part of the island is very large and I traveled along from the northwest to the northeast, and the west side, I have not been to yet – heard there is a diving spot with a temple under the sea.

tour in north bali

And because it’s not possible to go through this route in 1 day, I have to stop at several spots, so regarding the section “where to stay”, I will put it near the end of the article.

And now I will list the destinations you can visit on the way to the North.

Nungnung Waterfall

One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali. Located deep in the forest, the road to Nungnung waterfall is very green with abundant trees and plants. If Tegenungan waterfall is majestic, Nungnung waterfall is full of mystery in the deep forest, magically beautiful. It’s quite a long walk from the parking lot, but it’s not as far and tiring as going to Tegenungan waterfall.

tour in north bali

And the ticket price per person is: 10,000 IDR.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple – also known as the water temple.

Address: Danau Beratan, Candikuning, Baturiti, Tabanan Regency, Bali 82191, Indonesia Hours: 7AM–7PM

One of the four most sacred and famous Hindu temples in Bali, the Ulun Danu water temple is located on the shores of Danau Beratan lake, the whole area is like a big park, but the shrine / temple is also small, including the worship tower in the middle of the lake. To reach it, you have to row a boat. I found here that boats are rented with oarsmen to bring you near the temple to see, but you can’t allow to access it.

tour in north bali

The scenery here is beautiful, the air is fresh and cool, very pleasant.

The price to enter the temple is: IDR 40,000 without having to wrap Sarong.

tour in north bali

The iconic virtual living gate of Bali at Handara Golf & Resort

Surely everyone who learns about Bali will often see photos taken at this famous gate, and it is located very far from the center, so fortunately there are not TOO MUCH of tourists coming to take pictures, otherwise I don’t know how much time you have to spend to queue in line.

tour in north bali

This “divine” gate is about 10 minutes drive from the water temple, very close.

Coming here to take photos, you will have to buy a ticket of IDR 30,000/person. And you have to wait in long lines to take your turn to take pictures, each person can only take about 5 minutes, more than 10 minutes will be kicked out.

tour in north bali

All have to queue and wait for their turn to take pictures, that’s why so many people come but the photo is never “sticked” by others.

Bali is like that, civilized so that everyone has beautiful photos to post on Instagram. If you go in the tourist season, and unfortunately, you come after a Chinese group on a 50-seat car, then you should stop waiting in line for 2 hours to wait for your turn, and pay attention if it get dark, you will have to return to the hotel, waste efforts but got nothing.

tour in north bali

Lovina and the Waterfall – another waterfall

With this route, after taking pictures at the divine gate, it is already late afternoon, so the next stop to rest is probably the beautiful little town of Lovina, which is known as the dolphin city because this is the only place in Bali to watch dolphins – lots of dolphins. And I have a separate article about Lovina for you to read here.

On the way back to Lovina, I passed a few more waterfalls, but not too special, so you can skip if you your time is tight.

Things to do in north Bali: Mount Batur

On the way to the Northeast of the island, we will pass through Mount Batur area with Batur Natural hot spring and some spots with beautiful lake views. I had to skip this spot due to lack of time, so I don’t have much experience to share with you, but this area is quite suitable for those who want to come and have time for trekking.

tour in north bali

What to do in north Bali: Cepung Waterfall

Address: Central parkir waterfall tukad cepung, Jl. Tembuku, Tembuku, Kec. Tembuku, Kabupaten Bangli, Bali 80671, Indonesia Hours: 8AM–6PM

This waterfall is actually located in the middle Ubud and the north, so I included both here. This waterfall looks like a mysterious and magical because it’s located in a cave, it’s also very mystical to take pictures. And the important thing is that to reach it you don’t need to climb with steep slopes, so it’s less tiring. Remember to wear sports shoes because there are many sharp rocky streams.

tour in north bali

Cepung ticket price is 15,000 IDR/person.

Besakih Temple

Address: Jl. Gunung Mas No.Ds, Besakih, Kec. Rendang, Kabupaten Karangasem, Bali 80863, Indonesia Hours: 8AM–6PM

The largest of the four most famous and sacred temples in Bali (Besakih, Uluwatu, Tanah Lot and to the water temple of Ulun Danu). Besakih Temple is also known as the mother temple – the mother of temples in Bali, so you understand how sacred this place is.

tour in north bali

Besakih Temple is located at the foot of the largest volcano in Bali, Mount Agung is still active (less than 48 hours after I visited here, Mount Agung had a small eruption =)))). History says that Mount Agung often erupts, but never once has the mother temple been affected in the past thousand years (more than 2000 years for sure). Even the most violent eruption in 1963, the lava flows down were only a few meters from the mother temple, but there were many people who say that the temple was actually destroyed quite a lot by lava and was later rebuilt.

tour in north bali

Besakih Temple has a strange beauty unlike other temples, the stones, bricks here and even the palm thatch roofs have a mysterious black color of lava.

tour in north bali

Besakih Temple is very large, including many other 21 small temples, and tourists who come here can only walk around and see, but only Hindus can enter to pray.

tour in north bali

Note that after arriving Besakih temple, parking the car, you will buy a ticket to the temple, the ticket includes a sarong, a motorbike to take to the temple gate one way and a guide for the group to wait at the gate. When the tour guide ends, it’s okay to tip them.

Entrance fee to the temple: 60,000 IDR/person

Taman Tirta Gangga Temple

Address: Jalan Raya Abang Desa Adat, Ababi, Kec. Abang, Kabupaten Karangasem, Bali 80852, Indonesia Hours: 8AM–5PM

The journey to the North involves visiting quite a few temples, and Taman Tirta Gangga is also a VERY BEAUTIFUL temple and should be visited. Entering the temples, you will see how the architecture of the temples here is different from our own Buddhism, they have worshiping towering towers and god statues, but not many halls and shrines like ours.

tour in north bali

Taman Tirta gangga Temple is famous for its beautiful impressive pond that has a lot of fish and the bricks to go in the middle of the pond that is stunning setting for spectacular photos.

But because it’s beautiful, so it’s crowded with tourists, but this place doesn’t require line up, so everyone always stick your pictures.

tour in north bali

Price to enter the temple: 40,000 IDR/person

Lempuyang Temple

Address: Jl. Pura Telaga Mas Lempuyang, Tri Buana, Kec. Abang, Kabupaten Karangasem, Bali 80852, Indonesia Hours: 6AM–7PM

This is also a very sacred temple but is mainly popular with Balinese Hindus. This temple is very high, to explore it all, you have to climb more than 1700 steps and pass other small temples. Even on holidays such as the full moon, non-Hindu people can only go to the first gate, not to explore further.

But don’t worry because most tourists come here just for the first gate – the Gate of Heaven.

tour in north bali

Actually, I think the heaven gate here is much more beautiful than the gate at Handara resort, but it really started to be known by a Russian tourist who discovered and checked in on his Instagram, and from then everyone flocking here a lot.

You must have also been very jealous of the surreal photos here with the flat lake water reflecting the shimmering and beautiful gate.

But in fact, there is no flat lake here… if there is a big storm, it will be flooded =))))

tour in north bali

Honestly, coming here to take photos also has to be in a very long line like at Handara resort and there will be a local guy to help you to take surreal photos in an extremely professional and industrial way.

The simple process is that when it’s your turn, you come and give him the phone you want to take and then run to the gate to pose after him shouting, everyone is the same, the last shot always ends with the slogan “Jump”. And the lake you see on that photo is actually just an effect from a glass he place under the phone camera :))))

tour in north bali

Lempuyang temple entrance price is arbitrary, minimum IDR 10,000 including sarong. The price for him to take pictures is also arbitrary, he never complain about the specific fee.

The most beautiful and crowded time to take photos here is the golden hour at sunrise and sunset. When the sun goes down, the sun will gradually disappear behind Mount Agung, creating a surreal picture of nature and you should watch the time to come here around 3pm, 4pm to queue until…. 6pm is nice.

And at dawn, you will admire the scene of the sunrise from behind and the light shining on the red Mount Agung. In the morning, start going at 5am to occupy the nice spot because around 6am, people flock together with a large number.

tour in north bali

I went to in both timeframes to admire both of these wonderful moments.

I didn’t come here, but if you have time you can visit. Amed Beach is the beach located on the opposite side of Besakih Mother Temple. And for some reason, most of Mount Agung erupts in this direction, so there are no trees in this direction of Mount Agung, and due to many eruptions, Amed beach here is famous for being a beach with a black sand, so beautiful, but unfortunately I didn’t come to see it.

tour in north bali

Mount Agung

As mentioned above, Mount Agung is the largest volcano on the island and is also very sacred. This is also a destination for trekking to catch the sunrise because trekkers have super good physical strength due to the mountains are very high, steep.

tour in north bali

But when I came, all trekking activities here were banned due to volcanic activity, only when the authorities deemed it safe to do trekking.

Mount Agung trekking time is said to be 6~8 hours and you have to leave the peak of the mountain before 7am if you don’t want to absorb the temperature of more than 40 degrees Celsius here.

That’s what I heard, but I don’t understand it, so I have to do night trekking?

Northeast Bali

My journey ends at Taman Tirta Gangga, and from here I can return to Ubud or go along the northeastern coast of Bali to return to conveniently explore. Along this way, I canceled to return to Ubud, but before that, I also found out that this route will have a beautiful Blue Lagoon beach for swimming and snorkeling, but in general, the Northeast area does not have many beautiful spots to explore.

North Bali travel guide: Where to stay in the North Bali?

Here are some of the hotels we stayed in for you refer to:

Tirtagangga: Puri Sawah Bungalows & Restaurant : It is very close to Tirtagangga temple and not too far from Heaven gate, but surrounded by forests and fields. I was afraid to go out at night.

Lovina: Taman Lily’s Hotel ( Agoda , Booking ): Near the sea, near the center, but in general, the center of Lovina has nothing to do. Cheap, clean hotel with swimming pool, very kind and friendly host.

Tanah Lot: Dewi Sinta Hotel and Restaurant ( Agoda , Booking ): Affordable price, you can walking to Tanah Lot, at night, there is nothing around at night including restaurants, so if you want to eat, you have to go very far.

What to eat?

The expanse of lush and green forest turns out to save its own beauty. Not far from there you will find a hidden paradise in the form of a waterfall that is still beautiful and very natural. As far as the eye can see the plants spread between the rocks. This seems to separate the waterfall into two parts. The current is not as heavy as other waterfalls, but the distinctive feature of water falling through rocks between creeping plants has its own charm. The view of the twin waterfalls is so phenomenally beautiful, you can swim here with very clear and fresh water, the scenery around the waterfall is also very amazing with a stretch of green plants

16 Unmissable Things To Do In North Bali – Waterfalls & Nature!

north bali things to do

If you’re looking to find magic beyond the crowds, these amazing things to do in North Bali, Indonesia , are sure to enchant you. North Bali was a refreshing step away from the major tourism found in the traffic-heavy areas of Ubud and Canggu . There are popular attractions in North Bali but, between them, you’ll find untouched valleys, roaring waterfalls and active volcanoes. I had a wonderful time exploring North Bali in one day, although I wish I’d had longer, so I’ve included other things to do in the area if you can spend two or three days in North Bali. I hope this list inspires you to get up there and see it yourself!

NORTH BALI WHAT TO DO

Best things to do in North Bali and Lovina

If you find the highly touristy places overwhelming, consider these Bali hidden gems and lesser-visited places in North Bali. Here, you’ll trek down winding pathways to jungle waterfalls, black sand beaches, discover picturesque temples, and endless green views of rice fields, forests and hills. Read on to discover the North Bali best things to do!

1. Visit Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

tour in north bali

Colloquially known as the water temple due to its scenic position on the banks of Lake Beratan (Bali’s second largest lake), Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is undoubtedly the most beautiful temple I’ve visited in Bali. After stepping out of the car at 1500 meters above sea level, I was immediately grateful for the cooler weather. The lake itself is stunning; the perfect setting for a temple honouring Goddess Danu, the goddess of water, lakes and rivers. In fact, ‘Danu’ means lake in Balinese.

Four stunning buildings make up the temple, with the most striking being Pura Puncak Magu, standing at 11 levels high, and the stunning three-level Linga Pura, nestled on the banks of the lake in honour of the Hindu god, Shiva. If you visit with a local guide ( GetYourGuide have a fantastic North Bali tour ), you’ll get to learn about the different places of worship and the unique offerings around the temple: an insight often hard to gain when travelling solo in Bali. Address: Danau Beratan, Candikuning, Kec. Baturiti, Kabupaten Tabanan, Bali 82191 . Entrance fee: 50,000 IDR (US$3.30). Opening hours: 7am-7pm.

2. Stand under Gitgit Waterfall

tour in north bali

During a hot North Bali day trip, there’s no better way to refresh than by standing under the clean and cooling waters of Gitgit Waterfall !

The trail down to Gitgit is beautiful from the offset. The pathway from the car park to the bottom of the falls is incredibly well-maintained with small gardens, coconut trees and palm trees lining sections of the path. (You’ll also spot a couple of your usual Bali tourist stalls, but only a couple were open during my visit – in fact, I had the waterfall all to myself!).

It’s an easy hike down to the falls and won’t take most people longer than around 15 minutes, although there are steps at the end of the track.  At the bottom of the pathway, you can walk right to the bottom of the falls without having to scramble over rocks, although the area is slippery underfoot. The falls tumble over the jungle cliffs at around a height of 35 metres, and the breathtaking panorama is undoubtedly one of the best things to see in North Bali. Address: Jl. Raya Bedugul – Singaraja, Gitgit, Kec. Sukasada, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81161 . Entrance fee: 20,000 IDR (US$1.30). Open 24 hours.

3-9. Other beautiful waterfalls in North Bali

If you’re a nature lover, these waterfalls are wonderful places to visit in Northern Bali.

tour in north bali

3. Sekumpul Waterfall – after a short trek and 400 steps, you’ll reach the bottom of the spectacular 80-metre-high Sekumpul Waterfall, among the most famous in North Bali. There’s a fabulous viewpoint on the way down, too. You can also swim at the bottom. 4. Fiji Waterfall – from Sekumpul Falls, you can continue the hike towards Fiji Waterfall. While both are stunning, there’s an extra ticket to see them both from the bottom – so enjoy them from the higher lookouts if you’re travelling on a budget ! 5. Lemukih Falls (nearby the above 2) – an underrated waterfall accessed via steps. You may have to do river crossings to access Lemukih Falls in the rainy season, but local guides will be more than happy to show you the way.  6. Aling Aling Waterfall – these powerful falls can be seen from a viewing platform, or follow the pathway right down to the bottom.

7. Kroya Falls – before reaching Aling Aling, the path also passes Kroya, the perfect stop if you fancy cliff jumping or using a waterfall as a water slide! Alternatively, these beautiful North Bali waterfalls also have both an upper viewpoint and a staircase to the bottom.  8. Munduk Waterfalls – for tourists staying in Munduk, combining the area’s three most famous waterfalls is a must-do: Munduk , Melanting and Labuhan Kebo . You could easily spend a half day hiking to these spectacular falls, each set within the luscious Balinese jungle. 9. Banyumala Twin Waterfall – reach this famous twin waterfall via a 20-minute trek and cool off with a swim at the base of the falls!

10. Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Temple

tour in north bali

Visiting Bali’s largest Buddhist temple is a popular thing to do in North Bali, located in Lovina between the beautiful Banjar hills.  Since 1970, the monastery at Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist Temple has impressed visitors with its beautiful gardens and meditation spaces. There’s also a mini replica of Borobudur (the world’s largest Buddhist temple) onsite. Address: Banjar Dinas Tangeb, Banjar Tegeha, Kec. Banjar, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81152 . Entrance fee: 20,000 IDR (US$1.30). Opening hours: 8am-6pm.

11. Bathe in Banjar Hot Spring (‘Air Panas Banjar’)

tour in north bali

This 32-degree hot spring is perhaps one of the most unique North Bali tourist attractions. Consisting of a tropical garden with Hindu features and three separate pools, the sulphurous water at Banjar Hot Springs is believed to have healing properties. You’ll be no stranger to the mild egg-like smell if you’ve ever visited volcanic hot springs in New Zealand, Iceland or Japan! The hot pools are mostly frequented by locals, and there are changing rooms, lockers and toilets onsite, plus showers so you can rinse off after rejuvenating in the thermal pools.  Address: Jalan Banjar, Banjar, Kec. Banjar, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81152 . Entrance fee: 20,000 IDR (US$1.30). Opening hours: 8.30am-5.30pm.

12. Swim at Lovina Beach

Right on the Northern Coast of Bali, you’ll find Lovina, a coastal stretch dotted with stunning accommodations and fisherman’s villages. It’s also home to one of the most popular black sand beaches in North Bali. Aside from swimming and snorkelling next to the beautiful Lovina Beach , try another of the most popular things to do in North Bali: seeing wild dolphins! Visitors can try to spot dolphins from the shore or take a local boat tour for a higher chance of seeing the beautiful wild creatures.  If you’re an animal lover, you may want to avoid the boat option, as the boats go notoriously close to the dolphins to allow tourists to get a closer look. With dozens of boats surrounding the water, it’s not an idyllic experience, and possibly cruel to the animals. Address: Jl. Mawar Lovina Beach, Kalibukbuk, Singaraja, Anturan, Kec. Buleleng, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81151 . Lovina Beach is open 24 hours.

13. Get lost in Wanagiri Hidden Hills

tour in north bali

If you’re wondering where to go in North Bali to take beautiful photos, then honestly, any of the places on this list are more than photogenic enough. That said, there are some purposefully built and classic Instagrammable places in North Bali that people enjoy visiting, and a trip to Wanagiri Hidden Hills is the perfect stop for ample photo opportunities in one stunning mountainous location.  There are a few different classic ‘Insta-style’ lookouts at this North Bali attraction, usually constructed from bamboo to create ‘cute’ lookouts like nests, viewing platforms and swings.

The backdrop is the true star of the show: mountain scenery, the still waters of a beautiful lake below, and the luscious forest surrounding you. Even if you’re not into social media-ready setups, you can’t deny the nature here is beautiful.  Address: Wanagiri, Jalan Raya Munduk, Pancasari, Kec. Sukasada, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali . Entrance fee: 100,000-150,000 IDR (US$6.55-$9.80… Selfies are a BUSINESS in Bali, guys!) Opening hours: 8am-6pm.

14. Walk through Bali Handara Gate

tour in north bali

Photographers wondering what to do in North Bali need look no further than Handara Gate . Part of the Handara Golf & Resort, tourists can access the gate for a pretty photo with their friends. Since it’s got so famous, there’s now a small fee to take a photo here, and I’ve heard it can get really crowded so arrive early if you don’t fancy queuing for a photo. While these aren’t really my thing, I totally understand why people are keen to take memorable photos to share their holiday with their loved ones, and the Bali Handara Gate is an iconic place to do just that. Address: Jl. Raya Singaraja-Denpasar, Pancasari, Kec. Sukasada, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81161 . Entrance fee: 30,000 IDR (US $2.10). Opening hours: 24 hours.

Combine Wanagiri Hidden Hills and Handara Gate with one of Bali’s most breathtaking waterfalls and lakes on this Bali living postcard tour

15. Visit Munduk Moding Plantation

I’ve seen countless photos of travellers standing on the edge of the infinity pool at Munduk Moding Plantation with the mountains behind. Thankfully, you don’t need to pay luxury prices to stay overnight: you can take a day tour around the Munduk Moding Coffee Plantation. You’ll learn about the daily routine of farmers producing coffee while enjoying the insane views. Address: Jl. Asah Gobleg, Gobleg, Kec. Banjar, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81152 . Entrance fee (day pass): 500,000 IDR (US$32.70).

16. Hike Mount Batur for sunrise

Hiking Mount Batur

If you don’t mind the 2am start, then the famous Mount Batur sunrise hike is a must-do on any Bali itinerary . It’s not just one of the most iconic places to go in North Bali, but the whole island. If you get good weather, you’ll be spoiled with panoramic views while looking across to Mount Agung and watching the sunrise from the top of a 1700-metre-high volcano! The scenery of the surrounding lava fields, Kintamani Highland and Lake Batur does not disappoint. Even with bad weather, you’ll still be surrounded by gorgeous scenery on the morning walk down.

What to take on a North Bali day trip

Things to bring on your day trip include:

  • Comfy shoes – if you’re visiting any waterfalls, you’ll be grateful for comfortable footwear with decent grip.
  • Cash for lunch, cold drinks and snacks
  • Cash for entrance fees to waterfalls, temples etc
  • Sunglasses, cap and sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Your camera
  • Swimwear and a rash guard if you’re planning to swim at Lovina or the waterfalls
  • Dry bag if you’re taking a boat at Lovina/swimming
  • Rain jacket if visiting in the rainy season
  • A warm layer of clothing – especially if you plan to visit any mountainous regions for sunrise!

Where to stop on the way to Lovina

On the way to Lovina, there are also a few popular attractions in North Bali, such as Jatiluwih Rice Terraces (a quieter alternative to the busy rice fields near Ubud) and Munduk. You could also head to Bali’s beautiful East Coast if you have time. Here, you can marvel at the black sand beaches of Amed, find stunning viewpoints of Mt Amed Volcano, and go diving at Amed or Tulamben.

Is North Bali worth visiting? Yes, North Bali is definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re keen to break off the tourist track and find hidden gems. Is North or South Bali better? It depends what you’re into. For beach clubs and brunch cafes , stay in South Bali. However, North Bali is better for hidden places like waterfalls, hikes and untouched landscapes. How many days do you need in North Bali? While you can see plenty of the highlights in a day, it’s advisable to spend 2 to 3 days in North Bali to make the most of the region. How do you get around North Bali? Sadly, there’s no public transport so the best way to get around North Bali is by hiring a scooter or taking a guided day tour.

Top 10 Things To See In North Bali

Driveinbali

Where would you go if you were on vacation here in Bali, and you could rent a private car and drive to wherever your heart would take you? We’d recommend a North Bali tour, where you can expect astonishing discoveries, stunning sceneries, charming villages and lush greenery almost as far as the eye can see.

Bali is huge – it’s so much more than just Seminyak , Canggu , Ubud and Uluwatu – the island is approximately seven times the size of Singapore, measuring 5,780 square kilometres . A North Bali tour will give you an exciting new perspective of Bali, a refreshing contrast to the hustle and bustle of the south. Let’s take a look at what you can expect when you embark on a self-driving North Bali tour.

How To Get To North Bali

Before you embark on your North Bali tour, be sure to check the map – the route is an easy, almost straight drive up from the south on a well-maintained highway. You would pass by well-known districts in Central Bali like Sangeh, Ubud and Gianyar with their scenic landmarks including sacred forests, thriving rice fields, coconut groves and ancient temples.

On your drive for your North Bali tour, you’ll eventually get to the cool, highlands of Bali known as Bedugul with its cool, crisp climate, rolling hills, caldera lakes, temples and strawberry farms. Right after Bedugul, you’ll enter Munduk, a town that falls properly within the North Bali region, in the Buleleng district, famous for its cool, misty climate, verdant hills, hidden waterfalls and ancient villages. Let’s take a look at

10 Amazing Places To Visit In North Bali

north bali tour

What are the must-visit attractions on a North Bali tour by car? Let’s take a look at our top 10 recommended spots.

Munduk Rice Terraces

Enjoy the breathtaking sights of Munduk’s steep terraced rice fields as you drive past scenic winding roads on your North Bali tour. These rice terraces are often overshadowed by the more famous Tegallalang and Jatiluwih, but are equally captivating, and without the crowds and the queues.

Town of Singaraja

You’ll drive through the capital of Buleleng on your North Bali tour. Once the capital of the Dutch administration, the town offers wide roads and classic, colonial-style buildings. Do stop by the Puri Singaraja Royal Palace for a tour. Built in the 17 th century, the palace is in excellent condition; filled with historical mementoes and artefacts, for a glimpse of ‘old’ Bali.

Other notable places of interest in Singaraja would include the Balinese Lontar Museum – the old Balinese manuscript repository; the old Singaraja seaport; Ling Gwan Kiong Chinese Temple with its gorgeous red façade and Pura Segara Sea Temple, an important ancient landmark located near the seaport.

Lovina Beach

Head to Lovina Beach to relax and unwind. The waves here are calm with soft black sand, perfect for swimming, sunbathing and watersports. It’s also the meeting point for those going on the famous dolphin tour. Hungry? There are rows of charming cafes, bars, restaurants and warungs bordering the beach.

Krisna Funtastic Land

Add this fun amusement park to your North Bali tour itinerary, for a classic carnival at night with rides and snacks. There are approximately 16 rides including bumper cars, a ferris wheel, and even a Pirate Ship ride!

Banjar Hot Springs

Soak all your aches and pains away in pools filled with geothermal volcanic waters with high sulfur content. There are 4 pools, a restaurant, a shower & changing facility, an on-site spa and souvenir shops.

Kubutambahan

An idyllic village surrounded by rolling hills and terraced rice fields, ideal for a laid-back day of exploration amidst nature. Be sure to visit Meduwe Karang Temple with its intricate carvings and tropical gardens.

Brahmavihara-Arama

Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery is a great stop on your North Bali tour. Built in the 1970s, it’s only a 20-minute drive from Lovina, nestled amidst lush greenery on a hillside with a mini Borobudur replica to explore as well as a beautiful garden with statues, stone carvings, lotus ponds and a fountain.

North Bali Waterfall Tour

north bali places to visit

A North Bali waterfall tour is a must while you’re on this part of the island. Which waterfalls are commonly included in a North Bali waterfall tour? Here are our top favourites.

Thundering down from an impressive 40-metre height into a clear, cool rocky pool below, this beautiful waterfall is surrounded by lush vegetation and giant boulders. From the car park, it’s an easy trek down a paved pathway through a lovely garden and a few sets of staircases. Once you’ve neared the waterfall, descend into the lush ravine below and follow a wooden walkway towards the cascades.

Munduk & Melanting Waterfalls

These two waterfalls are located relatively near each other. From Jalan Kayu Putih main road, follow the pathway 300 metres into the forest and you’ll come to Munduk waterfall. It’s an easy trek north towards Melanting waterfall. Both waterfalls are cool and misty, surrounded by lush forests and clove plantations.

Sing Sing Waterfall

Located in the village of Banjar, Sing Sing is relatively easy to get to. It’s an easy 5-minute walk from the car park through lovely fields alongside a small river. Sing Sing may not be the tallest waterfall, but it is delightful with clear cool water tumbling down into a pool below surrounded by greenery and boulders.

10 Best Things to Do in North Bali, Indonesia

Pink and orange skies with the views of Pura Ulun Danu Beratan and Lake Beratan in North Bali.

We’ve been to Bali, Indonesia two times and try to explore the less-visited places. While we loved our time in Ubud during our 4 days in Bali , we also enjoyed visiting North Bali and East Bali . Most visitors tend to overlook North and East Bali in their Bali itinerary due to the distance from the popular areas of Kuta, Canggu, and Seminyak.

In this post, we’re sharing the 10 best things to do in North Bali and how to get to North Bali. We’re also sharing helpful information such as admission cost to each of these places in Indonesian rupiahs and U.S. dollars.

The fewer crowds, incredible waterfalls , abundant greenery, and quietness are great reasons to visit North Bali . While this list of North Bali attractions is not comprehensive, we look forward to coming back to this area in the future. It’s well worth the visit to North Bali and to stay in this tranquil area for 2+ days.

Before you read more about North Bali, check out this post on what to know before traveling to Bali .

1. Visit Sekumpul Waterfall.

Sekumpul Waterfall is one of the best waterfalls to visit in Bali . It was the first waterfall that we visited and its sheer beauty spoiled us. You can’t help but awe at the stunning cascading falls that are 80 meters (260 feet) high. Plus, you’re in the middle of the jungle so there are lots of trees and plants everywhere.

To get to the base of the waterfall, you’ll need to walk down the hill for 15 to 20 minutes from the main registration kiosk. The trail is slippery so be careful. Depending on the water flow from the waterfall, you may need to cross a stream that is calf-deep high.

Feel free to spend a few hours relaxing in the refreshing waters and/or visit the neighboring Fiji Waterfalls .

Check out our Sekumpul Waterfall guide to read about our experience.

Tip : Don’t stop at the fake registration sites as you drive towards the Sekumpul Waterfall parking lot. They are tourist traps.

Address:  Sekumpul, Sawan, Lemukih, Sawan, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81171, Indonesia

Admission Cost: Visiting Sekumpul now requires a tour guide. The cost is 150,000 IDR to 250,000 IDR per person depending on which trail you take.

Tours Options:

  • Private tour of Sekumpul Waterfall with Ulun Danu Beratan and luwak coffee plantation
  • Small group tour of Sekumpul Waterfall, Ulun Danu Beratan, Taman Ayun, and lunch

Justin Huynh, Life Of Doing, sits on top of a rock to get a photo with the Sekumpul Waterfall in North Bali. There are three cascading falls surrounded by a luscious forest.

Sekumpul Waterfall is a must-see attraction when you visit North Bali.

2. Awe at the Banyumala Twin Waterfall.

Banyumala Twin Waterfall is another beautiful waterfall and bucket list-worthy place to visit in North Bali . It’s tucked away on an unassuming narrow road. Drive carefully as the roads aren’t in the best conditions.

From the parking lot, walk 10 minutes down a hill to see the two “twin” cascading falls. Compared to Sekumpul Waterfall, the scale is much smaller yet it is a peaceful area to swim.

A picturesque spot is to take a photo on the bamboo bridge with the waterfall in the background.

Read our complete Banyumala Twin Waterfalls guide here.

Address:   Wanagiri, Sukasada, Wanagiri, Sukasada, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81161, Indonesia

Admission Cost: 30,000 IDR ($2.10) which includes a complimentary water bottle

Tour Option:

  • Banyumala Waterfall Trek, Bedugul and Lake Beratan Tour

3. Enjoy the Buyan and Tamblingan Lakes.

If you’re visiting Banyumala Twin Waterfall, drive along Jl. Raya Pancasari/ JI. Munduk Wanagiri road and stop by an overlook area to see the calm Buyan and Tamblingan Lakes . There is a platform where you can see the two lakes (also known as the “twin lakes”) and take photos.

While you’re there, there is a vendor showcasing their large iguana and huge bat. You can take photos with them but you’ll need to pay 30,000 IDR ($2.10). Monkeys are also in the area so be careful if you’re carrying food.

We heard that there are some hiking trails around Buyan and Tamblingan Lakes but we didn’t have enough time to do them. We’ll return to the area to do this adventure next time.

You can also stop by the neighboring Hidden Hills Wanagiri to have photo opportunities with the lake in the background.

Address:  Jl. Raya Pancasari, Gobleg, Banjar, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali, Indonesia

Admission Cost: Free

  • North Bali Tour which includes Buyan and Tamblingan Lakes

Justin Huynh and Jackie Szeto, Life Of Doing, overlook Tamblingan Lake from the platform area. The area is stunning with the greenery and the calm lakes.

4. Kayak around Pura Ulun Danu Beratan.

Bali never ceases to amaze us with the breathtaking temples. Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is a small temple complex surrounded by Lake Beratan.

Lingga Petak Temple is a famous water temple that contains holy water. Unfortunately, you cannot walk to the temple as it’s located in the lake. To get a closer view of the temple, rent a wooden boat to kayak around the lake.

It does get crowded here so go early in the morning. There is a shopping area before entering the temple and the coconut ice cream is delicious!

Address:   Danau Beratan, Candikuning, Baturiti, Tabanan Regency, Bali 82191, Indonesia

Tip: You don’t need to wear a sarong to this temple.

Admission Cost: 75,000 IDR ($5.20) adults; 50,000 IDR ($3.50) children

  • Tour of Ulun Danu Beratan and Jatiluwih Rice Terrace

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is a beautiful temple located in North Bali's Lake Beratan. You're not able to enter the small water temple, yet you can view it from the main walking path or via small boat.

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is a popular temple to visit in North Bali.

5. Visit Brahma Vihara Arana.

Brahma Vihara Arana is a unique place to visit as it’s the largest Buddhist monastery in Bal i. Located in a remote location, you will have the entire place to yourself like us.  We saw two other people when we left the monastery.

This peaceful complex is well-maintained with Balinese and Tibetan architecture stupas, pagodas, and Buddha statues. The highlight of this place is the miniature version of Borobodur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Java, Indonesia. You’ll love the quietness of this place. The monastery is open from 8:00am – 6:00pm.

Tip: Please wear appropriate clothing to cover shoulders and legs and take off your shoes when entering places to pray.

Address:  Gg. Sahadewa, Banjar Tegeha, Banjar, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81152, Indonesia

Admission Cost: 20,000 IDR ($1.40)

  • North Bali Tour which includes Brahma Vihara Arana

Brahma Vihara Arana is a Buddhist temple that has a mini version of Borobodur Temple in Java, Indonesia.

Brahma Vihara Arana is a hidden gem and a highly recommended thing to do in North Bali.

6. Get up early and do the Mount Batur Sunrise Trek

Trekking Mount Batur at sunrise is a bucket list adventure that you have to do while you’re on the island. Located on the northeast of Bali, hundreds of hikers take the daily trek up this inactive volcano to the summit at 1,717 meters (5,633 feet).

It’s an early start with pick up from your Ubud accommodation between 2:00am -2:30am. You’ll start hiking with your group around 4:00am to reach the top of the mountain before 6:30am.

The hike isn’t too challenging but the pace will be slow due to the single track. Once you reach the top, find a place to sit and enjoy a snack or breakfast. The view of the sunrise overlooking the caldera is breathtaking and well worth the early morning wake up call.

Tip: The top of the mountain is windy so bring a jacket. Watch out for your food and drinks as monkeys will attempt to steal them after the sun rises. One monkey tried to take my banana that was inside a styrofoam container and tucked away in the front pouch of my backpack.

Address: South Batur, Kintamani, Bangli Regency, Bali, Indonesia

Admission Cost: Tour prices vary depending on the number of people and the post-hike activity. If you do not pre-book your tour, we recommend that you walk around the main Ubud area and ask around for pricing. We were quoted between 300,000 IDR – 400,000 IDR ($21-$28) per person for the hike and coffee plantation visit. The price is higher if you want to visit the hot springs afterward.

Tour Options:

  • Mount Batur sunrise trek with luwak coffee plantation visit
  • Small group Mount Batur sunrise trek
  • Private Mount Batur sunrise trek with a hidden waterfall
  • 2 Days sunset & sunrise camping on Mount Batur

Justin Huynh and Jackie Szeto, Life Of Doing, hiked Mount Batur in the early morning to see the sunrise. We're overlooking the caldera and the lake. This is a bucket list item when visiting North Bali.

It’s worth it to see the sunrise at Mount Batur while you’re visiting Bali. Look at that view!

7. walk through the jatiluwih rice terraces..

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces is a well-known rice field located in the Tabanan area. Technically, it’s in the central part of Bali, yet we wanted to include this on the list as you’ll pass by this rice terrace on your way to the other North Bali attractions or as a side trip from Ubud .

Jatiluwih is a great place to walk around as the walking trail is easy to follow . Along the way, stop by the mini visitor’s center to talk with locals about the rice fields and see the farmers tending their crops.

The fields are mostly luscious green due to receiving water from the subak, a UNESCO recognized water irrigation system of canals and tunnels which connects to over 19,500 hectares of rice fields. Hopefully, on your visit, farmers aren’t burning their crops to make way for the new season.

Address: Jalan Jatiluwih No No.Desa, Jatiluwih, Penebel, Kabupaten Tabanan, Bali 82152, Indonesia

Admission Cost: 40,000 IDR ($2.80)

Tour Options:

  • Tour Jatiluwih Rice Terrace on an electric bike
  • Small group tour of UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Jatiluwih Rice Terrace has the cascading layers of rice fields. Plus, it's a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is one of the largest rice fields in Bali. Consider stopping by when you’re in North Bali.

8. Enjoy the quietness at Pura Luhur Batukau.

Pura Luhur Batukau is a smaller temple located at the slopes of Mount Batukaru and nearby Jatiluwih Rice Fields. While this temple doesn’t have the same allure as Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, we loved the intimate feeling of this place and the rustic look of the moss covering the temple grounds. There is a nice lake surrounded by tall trees in the back of the complex.

Pura Luhur Batukau Entrance Fee: 20,000 IDR ($1.40), includes sarong rental

Address: Jalan Penatahan-Wongayagede, Wongaya Gede, Penebel, Wongaya Gede, Penebel, Kabupaten Tabanan, Bali 85125, Indonesia

Pura Luhur Batakau's entrance way and the temple ground has moss covering on everything which provides a rustic look.

Peace and quietness at the charming Pura Luhur Batakau.

9. Take your IG shot at Handara Gate.

This is the famous Instagram-worthy gate located at the entrance of the  Handara Golf and Resort . If you’re passing through the area, take a few minutes to showcase your creative pose with the Balinese-style gate. There will be a line of people waiting for their turn.

Since we already had an amazing photo with  Pura Lempuyang ’s Gateway to Heaven, we skipped Handara Gate and proceeded to our next destination. Plus, our driver said that there was a fee to take a photo with the gate. We would prefer to support a local temple than a resort.

Address:  Desa Singaraja-Denpasar, Pancasari, Sukasada, Pancasari, Buleleng, Kabupaten Buleleng, Bali 81161, Indonesia

Admission Cost: 30,000 IDR ($2.00)

10. See Dolphins at Lovina Beach.

Our Bali driver recommended us to come back to Bali to see wild dolphins at Lovina Beach . He said that it was a fun experience to see them swim around your boat at sunrise . If you’re not into dolphin watching, you can see the dolphin statue or hang out and relax at Lovina Beach.

Address: Off of Jl. Seririt-Singaraja, Bali, Indonesia

Tour Options:

  • See the sunrise at Lovina beach, dolphins, and waterfalls
  • Private tour to see dolphins and Pura Ulun Danu Beratan

How to Get to North Bali

You’ll either be fortunate enough to stay in a North Bali hotel or need to travel into the area. Since we visited North Bali as day trips from Ubud, we had a driver to take us to the various attractions. It’ll take at least two hours to drive from the center of Ubud to North Bali. Here the transportation options in further detail.

1. Ride a motorbike.

Riding a motorbike provides you the flexibility to travel around Bali. It’s a cheaper option as it’ll cost between 60,000 IDR – 300,000 IDR ($4.20–$21 USD). If you do not know how to ride a motorbike , please do not use this option as your chances of getting into an accident is very high. Book a motorbike and check out the options here.

2. Hire a driver for the day.

Hiring a driver is the best investment that did for our trip. We didn’t want to deal with navigating the windy and narrow roads. Drivers can range from 500,000 IDR – 650,000 IDR ($35-$46 USD). Book a driver here .

Or, you can hire the driver that we used. Contact us and send us an inquiry. We loved our driver as he was safe on the roads and an awesome person to hang out with. He gave us tips to ensure that we didn’t get cheated by the local people too.

3. Go on day tours.

We’ve provided tour options for each of the attractions which will help save you money and time.

As you can see, there are so many popular and hidden gem North Bali tourist attractions to visit. We highly recommend that you take the time to explore this area fully. If you’re looking for more things to do in Indonesia, check out our other posts for inspiration:

North Bali: 10 Incredible Things To See & Do [2024 Edition]

affiliate disclosure policy

Looking for the best Tulum tours?

North Bali is bursting with breathtaking natural beauty, spiritual temples upon mist-covered lakes, forests leading to hidden waterfalls, and volcano trek adventures.

With the majority of tourists being located around the south ( Kuta , Legian, Seminyak, Uluwatu , and Ubud), the north part of Bali is often overlooked on many a Bali itinerary. As a result, the north retains it’s quietness and mystique, packed with a plethora of hidden gems and off-beat trails still untouched by mass tourism.

Six years after my first trip to Bali, tourism had well and truly exploded across the south of the island. I knew I missed out on so much when I didn’t venture north on my first trip. In fact, I believe the north has FAR MORE on offer.

There’s SO much to see and do in the north, that I wasn’t able to fit everything into even a month’s trip in Bali.

I absolutely recommend that you include the north in your Bali itinerary, for all traveler types including solo backpackers, couples, and families.

Travel Guide: North Bali: Top 10 Things To See & Do

A guide to all the hidden gems north Bali has to offer. Including best activities and landmarks to visit, where to stay, and more.

1. Discover North Bali’s Powerful Waterfalls

One of the greatest wonders, and the most exciting adventures in Bali, are its thundering, enormous waterfalls located deep in the forests.

13 Places In Bali That You MUST Visit 6

Most of Bali’s waterfalls are found in the north – particularly around the central highlands region.

The most popular waterfalls have an admission fee – this is so the locals can maintain the area surrounding the waterfalls to keep them clean and tidy, and ensure there’s access down the steep steps to get there.

While its not compulsory to pay the fee, its recommended you pay out of respect. And besides, the small fee doesn’t mean much to you but to the locals its a source of income and it means a lot.

Check out the north Bali map below to see the locations of the waterfalls and how long it would take to reach them.

Sekumpul Waterfall

Considered the most beautiful waterfall in Bali, also one of the most powerful. Waterfall Sekumpul is quite far out and difficult to reach, so consider making this the main focus of your day if you decide to visit.

💧 Discover The Sekumpul Waterfall on a guided tour

If you want to explore The Sekumpul Waterfall and visit iconic temples Ulun Danu and Taman Ayun, then I highly recommend you to choose The Sekumpul Waterfall and Temple Small Group Tour , with which you will be able to enjoy these landmarks completely.

Aling Aling Waterfall

You can slide down this waterfall and jump into pool, depending on when you visit. If you go in February like I did, it’s too dangerous to swim here.

How to get there: By car or scooter, its an hour to get to both waterfall locations. Theres a parking lot on arrival, and its a further 20 minutes walk and climb down the steps to the waterfalls. Admission: IDR 25K

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls

One of the most popular, this one is an enormous twin waterfall that trickles down over a huge rocky cliff into a large shallow pool, and you can actually swim and stand beneath this waterfall.

banyumala-twin-waterfalls

How to get there:  From Munduk, it’s 30 minutes to get to Banyumala Twin waterfalls by car or scooter. From the Bedugul region, its around 20 minutes. Admission: IDR 20K

GitGit Waterfall

I really liked this one because the force of the water hitting the rocks is intense and the noise booms and echoes deep into the forest.

Gitgit waterfall

I also liked how there was virtually no tourists here compared to the others, which surprised me as it wasn’t that difficult or time-consuming to get to this waterfall.

Getting there: From Bedugul, its 25 minutes away, by car or scooter. From Munduk, its 40 minutes away. Admission: IDR 20K

Munduk Waterfall

One of the lesser known gems, Munduk waterfall is one of the easier and quicker waterfalls to get to, it’s just off the main road going into Munduk.

Bali Private Waterfall Tours

Use the widget below to book a private guided tour of Bali’s best waterfalls:

2. Ulun Danu Bratan: The Temple On The Lake

The picturesque water temple of Ulun Danu Bratan (also spelled Ulun Danu Beratan) floating on Tamblingan Lake, with clouds billowing across the water from the mountains behind it, is one of the most iconic and instagrammable spots in Bali.

Situated in Bedugul, Tabanan Bali, the temple compound hosts several Hindu holy buildings, statues, and beautifully-carved gates.

Bonus: Handara Gate

Since you’re in this area, there’s some other fantastic things to see besides Ulun Danu Bratan, for instance, the large, ancient Hindu gates at Handara Gate is just 5 minutes ride up the road, and its one of the most photographed spots in all of Bali.

13 Places In Bali That You MUST Visit 1

And the other one is the Wanagiri Hidden Swing – which is slightly further up the road into the mountains, another very instagrammable location, the clue is in the name – its a series of swings and mini bamboo treehouses looming over the cliff -top, where you can get some nice photos taken for the fee of 50K.

Among the best attractions in the region is the Munduk Moding Plantation, which features a glorious 18-meter infinity pool, as well as dreamy spa packages for the ultimate pampering experience.

Directions: From Munduk its 30 minutes to get to the temple by car or scooter. Admission fee: IDR 50K for adults, IDR 25K for children Best time to visit: during the golden hours – shortly after sunrise and the hour before sunset. These are also the more quieter times with fewer tourists around.

3. Wander The Picturesque Rice Terraces

One of the most phenomenal treasures on the island: is this huge rice field network created by the locals thousands of years ago, it’s the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bali.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

There are two main rice fields in north Bali that you can explore – Tegallalang near Ubud, and Jatiluwih in Buleleng. Tegallalang is the smaller and more commercial one, with more tourists.

Jatiluwih, on the other hand, is VAST – valleys of rice fields stretch as far as the eye can see here. And there’s nowhere near as many tourists about either. It’s incredibly quiet, surreal and mostly untouched landscape. This is why I recommend Jatiluwih to anyone visiting Bali.

Getting there: From Bedugul, its 45 minutes by car or scooter. From Munduk, its an hour and 10 minutes. Admission: IDR 40K Best time to visit: During the early morning hours shortly after sunrise (when its not too busy), or during the late afternoon shortly before sunset.

4. Free Tea & Coffee Tasting Session In The Valleys

A short distance from the Jatiluwih rice fields is a coffee plantation near the village of Angseri, and here you can enjoy free samples of various different teas and coffees.

Tea Tasting Bali

Jati Harum is a quiet little spot where you can relax on the balcony and admire the stunning views of the valleys of Jatiluwih rice fields from high up, whilst tasting an assortment of teas and coffees for free.

There was chocolate and coconut coffees to ginseng and lemongrass tea varieties.

One thing to bear in mind – this plantation also serves the popular Luwak coffee. They will offer you a taster of this, however, we chose not to try the Luwak coffee due to ethical reasons.

Directions: It’s 5 minutes away from Jatiluwih rice terraces by car or scooter. Admission: Free. The taster session is free, and if you like, you can purchase a box of any of the tea and coffee available.

5. Soak In Natural Hot Spring Baths

One of my favorite things I did in Bali was experiencing one of the few steaming natural pools located in the valleys.

In the forests not far from the Jatiluwih Rice Fields is Angseri: the ancient, natural hot springs that are occasionally frequented by locals.

A 10-minute walk down the valley leads you to the entrance where the main pool is – right in a beautiful and serene forest setting. Upon arrival I was amazed that there was not a single tourist in sight!

The path on the right leads to several smaller, enclosed hot springs where you can get changed as well as enjoy the privacy of your own hot pool.

This was a truly enjoyable and therapeutic experience that made the perfect end to a long day of walking around hill-top temples and valleys of rice fields.

Getting there: By car or scooter, its 8 minutes away from Jati Harum and 15 minutes from Jatiluwih Rice Terraces. Entrance fee: IDR 45K

👉 Tip: If you don’t get chance to visit Air Panas Angseri, consider the Banjar hot springs near Lovina – another one of Bali’s ancient, natural spas.

6. Trek To The Summit Of Mount Batur, An Active Volcano

Ever wanted to climb an active volcano? Mount Batur is one of Bali’s two active volcanoes, and you can literally hike to the summit in darkness to witness an incredible sunrise.

Without a doubt, this was one of the highlights of my trip to Bali.

Setting out at 3am, we hiked up the steep and rocky mountain in darkness, with only the moonlight and a torch to guide us.

Climbing takes around 2 hours, and on arrival at the summit – 1,717 meters above sea level – we witnessed a gorgeous sunrise and could even see the tiny villages by the lake, and clouds drifting below us.

In the distance, you can see Mount Agung, Bali’s highest volcano, currently closed to climbers as it just recently had a volcanic eruption!

Did you know: Mount Agung is considered the most sacred spot on the island, and it last erupted in November 2018

For more facts about Bali, head over to my blog: 25 Awesome Facts About Bali

Trekking Mount Batur was a truly memorable experience. For the first time I got to see lava rock, and on the descent back to base, I even witnessed steam rising from inside the rocks. This was also my first mountain hiking experience, it was a great challenge and recommended for those with little to no hiking experience

Getting there: Since you need to be at the base camp before 3am, its best to be situated in Ubud where the minivan takes an hour to get to Mount Batur. Alternatively, stay in the Kintamani region which is right at the foot of the mountain.

Admission: Varies – if going with a group tour (as recommended), it costs around USD40 which includes hotel pick up and drop off van, tour guide, breakfast, torches, and entry to the Batur hot springs.

Mount Batur Guided Tours

You can book your guided tour of Mount Batur that includes breakfast, kit, and extras, in the widget below:

Don’t forget to bring appropriate footwear Trekking Mount Batur and the steep rocks leading down to Bali’s waterfalls will require you to wear appropriate footwear. Since the terrain is rocky and sometimes slippery, flip flops is not suitable. You are better off bringing a decent pair of strong, sturdy sandals or hiking shoes that will last you years of travels. My favorite sandals are by Birkenstock – a leading brand of outdoor footwear. Be sure to get your pair on Amazon

7. Visit The Temple Of Lempuyang, aka ‘Gates Of Heaven’

One of the most surreal and picturesque spots in North Bali is in the Temple of Lempuyang, also known as the ‘Gates Of Heaven’.

gates of heaven

Here you can have your photo taken between the towering ancient temple gates at the top of a hill, whilst in the background the enormous Mount Agung volcano looms in the distance, with clouds billowing past and steam spouting from the crater.

Getting there: From Tirta Gangga, its 20 minutes away. From Ubud, its a 2 hour journey by car, and longer by scooter. Admission: the temple asks for donations only. I recommend paying between IDR 10K-30K

👉 Top Tip: If you’re planning on arriving at sunrise, it’s recommended to stay at a homestay or guest house in Tirta Gangga village. You can find plenty of nice and affordable options run by very friendly locals on Airbnb and Booking.

Lempuyang Gate of Heaven Guided Tours

Use the widget below to book a private sunrise tour of Lempuyang/Gate of Heaven:

8. Visit The Tirta Gangga Water Palace

Not far from the Gates Of Heaven is Tirta Gangga – a pretty village where you can take part in a traditional Hindu bathing ritual at the ancient holy water temple.

Featuring natural pools with large Koi fish and statues of Hindu deities, there’s even stepping stones that allow you to navigate around the ancient water complex and feed the fish.

Although the temple is a bit touristy these days, its still recommended to spend a couple days in this quiet little village to observe how the locals live their unique, Balinese Hindu way of life.

Getting there: From Ubud, its 1 hour 45 minutes drive. Admission: IDR 30K per person

9. Explore Singaraja & Lovina

The northern coastal towns of Lovina and Singaraja are Bali’s quieter alternatives to Kuta and Seminyak.

The historic fishing port city of Singaraja was the former capital of Bali during the Dutch colonial era, and still retains much of its colonial vibe.

With antiquated buildings in old Dutch architecture on wide streets, its the perfect location for those interested in learning the island’s history.

Things to See & Do in Singaraja:

  • Puri Singaraja Royal Palace, a popular historical attraction
  • Gedong Kirtya Museum, home of the world’s largest repository of ‘lontar’ palm leaf manuscripts
  • Ling Gwan Kiong, an old Chinese Temple

Explore the nearby Buyan and Tamblingan Lakes

Singaraja is also the capital of the Buleleng district of Bali, a commercial hub on the island, and so an excellent place for shopping and local eats.

Lovina is a nice little beach resort region thats quieter and less crowded than the popular southern resorts of Kuta.

With calm waves, black-sand beaches, its perfect for families to enjoy snorkelling and other water sports here. It’s also home Bali’s only Buddhist monastery, the Brahma Vihara Arama.

And with its own trendy restaurants, a plethora of accommodation options and a lively nightlife scene, its definitely worth adding to itinerary while you’re on the north coast.

What is there to do in Lovina Bali?

If you’re looking for places off the beaten path in Bali, Lovina and it’s surrounding areas are among the best spots for true hidden gems. Here’s some of the best things to see and do around Lovina Bali:

  • Bathe at Air Panas Banjar
  • Visit Beji Temple in Sangsit
  • Go on a Dolphin Watching tour at Lovina Beach
  • Take a trip to the exotic Menjangan island
  • Visit the Brahma Vihara Arama, the largest Buddhist temple in Bali
  • Explore the shopping malls and trendy cafes and restaurants in Singaraja
  • Check out Bali Bike Park

Bali beach

Directions: Singaraja is a 2-hour drive from Ubud, and slightly longer on scooter. From Munduk, its one hour away. Lovina is 20 minutes away from Singaraja.

Lovina Sunrise Dolphin Watching Tours

Use the widget below to book a private sunrise Dolphin watching tour in Lovina:

10. Spot Dolphins At Sunrise

One of the must things to do in north Bali is witness the majestic dolphins breach the waters at sunrise.

There are several species on the northern coast, and the most commonly spotted are the beautiful dark-skinned spinner dolphins that are present all year round, except during the Chinese Lunar New Year period, when there’s heavy rain (from February-April).

Getting there: Lovina Beach is 20 minutes from Singaraja, and 50 minutes away from Munduk. Admission: Depending on which tour agency you go with, packages cost around USD20-50 that includes hotel pick up from Lovina at 5:30am, a 2-hour dolphin watching boat tour, and drop off back to hotel.

🐬 Enjoy spotting dolphins on a private tour

Watch the wild dolphins near Lovina Beach playing at sunset on Dolphin Tour and Sunrise Watching in Lovina Beach in a glass-bottom boat. After the dolphins, you will have breakfast in a local restaurant and visit Wanagiri Hidden Hills.

#4. Travel Insurance

For added security and peace of mind, don’t leave home without good travel insurance by SafetyWing . Take it from me – what’s the worst that could happen?

Well, on my first trip to Mexico I got electrocuted in a hostel (yes, seriously). I flicked a light switch in a dark bathroom and felt a sharp burn travel from my finger all the way up my arm, as if it caught fire (you can read about that in this post ).

arm blew up

Think I just had a freak accident? What happens if you’re out in Mexico and your appendix suddenly bursts? I cannot stress enough how important travel insurance is.

North Bali FAQs:

Here are the most commonly-asked questions about north bali:, is north bali worth visiting.

Northern Bali is an absolute must for anyone looking to escape the crowds and discover hidden gems and cultural attractions like the mighty Sekumpul Waterfall, the mystical Banjar hot springs, the exotic Menjangan island, and the white sands of Lovina Beach.

Where should I go in north of Bali?

Here’s the top places to visit in North Bali: Discover North Bali’s powerful waterfalls Visit Ulun Danu Beratan, the temple on the lake Wander the breathtaking Rice Terraces in Angseri Enjoy a free tea and coffee tasting session Soak in natural hot springs with the locals at Air Panas Banjar Trek to the summit of an active volcano Visit the Temple of Lempuyang, aka the Gates of Heaven Explore Singaraja and Lovina Visit the Tirta Gangga Water Palace Spot Dolphins at Sunrise

What is the most north town in Bali?

Lovina is a charming, cosy little village on the northern coast of Bali in the Buleleng region. As well as being famous for its shopping malls and white sand beaches, it is becoming ever more popular due to its affordable private pool villas, nearby ancient monasteries and hot springs, and sunrise dolphin spotting.

What should I avoid in Bali?

Here’s 8 things you should not do in Bali: Don’t spend all your time in Kuta/Seminyak. Not only are they a minuscule part of Bali, there are also much better places and things to see and do. Don’t only eat Western food. For heavens sake, you are in Bali. Make the most of the unique cuisine here. Don’t dismiss local warungs for the pricey touristy eateries. While those hipster vegan and eco-friendly restaurants and worth checking out, they are also owned by wealthy expats from Australia or the US. Local warungs are run by locals who don’t have very much, and your money would mean far more to them. Don’t waste time haggling at the markets if you have no intention of buying. You’ll get worn out in the hot weather, and most importantly, its rude. The market traders could have potentially made a sale and found much-needed paying customers during this valuable time. Don’t haggle too hard. Many like to drive a hard bargain, but if you are haggling on a beautiful Balinese painting or sculpture, remember the artist put a lot of time and effort into creating these incredible works, and it’s his only source of income. Don’t enter temples without the correct attire. This applies to both men and women. Always remove your footwear before entering any temple, and you must ensure your legs and shoulders are covered. You can put on a sarong before entering, and many temples provide these at the entrances. Don’t dismiss home stays. Many locals rely on hosting and accommodating guests at their homes for their survival, and believe me – not only is this a more authentic experience, the hosts are extremely friendly, their homes are very nice and cosy, and their breakfasts are superb! Don’t visit for less than one week. Trust me – I’ve been to Bali twice, the last time I went for a month, and there is still so much I have yet to see in Bali.

How to get around in North Bali?

For the most convenient and enjoyable experience, hiring a driver is highly recommended when getting around. Bali drivers offer affordability, excellent local knowledge, and even superb photography skills. Providing your exact itinerary ensures they follow your desired route, avoiding only the crowded southern region to save on fuel and bypass challenging terrain.
