3 ways to speed up slow Safari downloads

Your email has been sent

Soon after realizing my MacBook Pro battery life was greately extended by using Safari, I realized that the download speeds for Apple’s browser were really, really, really bad. So bad that I’ll open up Chrome (a MacBook battery hog) to download larger files and then close it once the download is complete. Or, in cases where I can easily copy the download URL, I’ll open up a terminal window and use the wget command for really speedy downloads.

I am convinced this dogged speed was by design–in order to keep battery usage to a minimum. Even with that bit of conspiracy theory in check, there are things you can do to help Safari speed up the downloads. Although these tips won’t have you seeing magical results (with Safari downloading as quickly as either Chrome or Firefox), you will see some improvement.

With that said, let’s get to the tips.

Clear that cache

This is the biggest culprit. Why? Unlike other browsers, Safari doesn’t handle it well when a cache becomes too large. It’s a rarity that Chrome or Firefox will trip up, due to cache. Safari, on the other hand, not so much.

So how do you clear the Safari cache? It’s really easy, so long as you don’t mind clearing out your history as well. What if you don’t want to delete them all, in one fell swoop? To do that, you have to jump through a hoop. Here’s how:

  • Open Safari
  • Click Safari | Preferences
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • Click to enable Show Develop menu in menu bar ( Figure A )

Now that you’ve enabled the Develop menu, close the Preferences window and click Develop | Empty Caches. That’s it. Your cache has been cleared (without taking down your history as well).

Set static IP and DNS addresses

On any network you have control over (such as your home or company network), you can give your MacBook a boost by setting static IP addresses. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Click on the Network icon in the top bar
  • Click Open Network Preferences
  • Select the network to be configured
  • Click Advanced
  • In the resulting window, click the TCP/IP tab
  • Select Manually, from the Configure IPv4 drop-down
  • Fill out the necessary information ( Figure B )

safari fast download

Once you’ve added the static address, click on the DNS tab, click on the + button ( Figure C ), and add a new DNS address. Do this such that you have a primary and secondary DNS address (such as Google’s DNS addresses 8.8.4.4 and 8.8.8.8).

Click OK and you’re done.

Reset Safari

What if you’ve been using Safari for quite some time and neither of the above tips makes any difference? It could be that Safari simply needs a reset. Unfortunately, the latest iterations of Apple’s browser saw the Reset Safari entry removed from the Safari menu and the only really dependable way to do this is via the command line. To do this, close Safari, open up the terminal window, and issue the following commands:

rm ~/Library/Cookies/* rm ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/* rm ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/* rm ~/Library/Safari/Downloads.plist rm ~/Library/Safari/Form\ Values rm ~/Library/Safari/History.plist rm ~/Library/Safari/HistoryIndex.sk rm ~/Library/Safari/LastSession.plist rm -rf ~/Library/Safari/LocalStorage rm ~/Library/Safari/TopSites.plist rm ~/Library/Safari/WebpageIcons.db

That should do it. Understand, this resets Safari to factory defaults, so you’ll lose all saved data and any configurations. But sometimes a reset is the only way to get Safari to behave. Use this only as a last-ditch effort.

It may be in vain

I still believe that Safari suffers from slower download (and upload, for that matter) speeds by design (to save precious battery). Because of this, you might find that all is in vain, that nothing you can do will speed Safari’s download speeds sufficiently. So when I’m not connected to power, Safari is my browser of choice. When I need to download or upload a larger file, I tend to head over to Chrome.

How to speed up Safari

Martyn Casserly

Safari is one of the fastest browsers around, both on the desktop and mobile, but over time it can become a little clogged up. Keeping things ship-shape involves a touch of maintenance now and then, so here are a few tips to ensure that Safari stays as quick as it can be.

If you’re experiencing problems with your Mac being sluggish overall, then you might also want to take a look at How to speed up a slow Mac guide. And there’s also How to speed up a slow iPhone for those on iOS.

Safari on iOS

Reboot the app.

The easiest solution for an underperforming app is often to shut it down and load it back up again. To do this, double-click on the Home button to bring up the recently used apps menu.

iPhone X users have a different method, which involves swiping the little bar at the bottom of the screen upwards then holding onto it until the recently used apps appear.

Now swipe up on Safari to close it. Tap the Home button once more to get back to the Home screen, or swipe up from the bottom on the iPhone X, then launch Safari. If things go well, it should now be back to its former glory.

Clear the History

One quick thing to try if you find your iPhone or iPad are struggling with Safari is to clear the history. As you use the browser it stores information about sites it visits, and this can build up over time. A good clean now again can improve performance and speed things up.

To clear the history, open the Settings app then scroll down until you find Safari. Tap on this, scroll down again, and you should see Clear History and Website Data written in blue.

How to speed up Safari: Clear data

Tap this, and when you see the popup menu appear select Clear History and Data.

How to speed up Safari: Clear data

With this done, launch Safari again and hopefully the sluggishness will have disappeared.

Close all the open tabs

In theory, the open tabs shouldn’t affect things too much, as they are all kept in a suspended state when not selected. But, as is the way with electronic devices, sometimes closing them can return a happy surprise in terms of performance.

To shut down the old tabs, open Safari then tap and hold on the two squares in the bottom-right corner. A menu will appear, from which you should select Close All [X] Tabs.

How to speed up Safari: Close tabs

Update to the latest version

Updating iOS is also another good idea, as Apple patches various problems that crop up in its apps, which could include anything that’s wrong with Safari.

Go to Settings > General > Software Update, and see if there is a download available for iOS. If there is, tap the Download and Install option at the bottom of the screen.

How to speed up Safari: Update iOS

It’s worth remembering that Apples aren’t the only fruit, so if you want to try out a different browser then it would worth reading our Best iPhone browsers guide.

Safari on macOS

There are also ways to speed up Safari on a Mac. If you’d like to see more tips about using Safari on a Mac read our guide to using Safari on a Mac here.

Clear the cache

Just like on iOS, Safari stores information about sites you’ve visited. While this can make things speedy to begin with, after a while the bulk of information can become a drag factor.

Clearing the cache is a quick and easy way to remove some of the clutter that could be causing the snail-like performance.

Open Safari on your Mac, go up to the menu bar at the top of the screen and click on Safari. From the drop-down menu select Preferences.

How to speed up Safari: Clear cache

Make sure the Advanced tab is selected on the window that appears, then click on the Show Develop menu in menu bar tick-box.

How to speed up Safari: Clear cache

At the top of the screen you should now see an option for Develop. Click this and then from the drop-down menu select Empty Caches.

How to speed up Safari: Clear cache

Reboot Safari and see if this has had the desired effect.

Update your extensions

Safari allows a number of plug-in programs that can add functionality to the browser. These can be ad-blockers, privacy protection, password managers, or a number of other things. Of course, the more parts there are in a system, the more things to go wrong.

Checking that your Extensions are up to date is a good way to avoid any pace-sapping problems.

Open Safari, click on Safari in the menu bar at the top of the page, then click on Preferences.

In the window that appears, select the Extensions tab.

How to speed up Safari: Update extensions

In the lefthand column, you’ll see a list of the Extensions you have installed, beneath which there will be a notification if you have any that require updating.

Click on the Updates notification and you’ll see all of the ones now available displayed in the main pane. Click the Update button beneath each one’s name and Safari will take care of the rest.

If this doesn’t solve the problem then you can try disabling each Extension one by one to see if there’s a rogue element hiding in your browser. To do this simply click the blue tick-box to the left of the Extension name in the lefthand column.

How to speed up Safari: Extensions

Update macOS

Just like the apps themselves, macOS needs to be kept up to date if things are to run smoothly. Open the App Store on your Mac and then click on the Updates tab in the menu along the top of the window.

How to speed up Safari: Update macOS

If you see a listing for macOS (it’s usually down as Software Update) then click on the grey Update button on the right side of the screen. You may need to restart your Mac afterwards, but then hopefully Safari will be a free-flowing beast once more.

Of course, if you fancy a complete change, then you should check out our Best Mac browser 2017 guide for a few alternatives.

2. Force Close and Relaunch Safari

At times, Safari or any of its tabs might encounter errors or issues that consume excessive system resources, leading to slowdowns. Force closing and re-launching Safari can terminate these problematic processes and give the browser a fresh start.

Here’s how to force quit Safari and relaunch it on your Mac:

  • Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select Force Quit from the drop-down menu.

click the apple icon and select force quit

  • In the new window, select Safari and click the Force Quit button.

select safari and click force quit

  • You can also right-click a tab and select Close Tab from the context menu.
  • After closing unwanted tabs, check if Safari’s performance has improved.

4. Clear Safari History

Over time, Safari accumulates a history of the websites you’ve visited, cached files, and cookies. While these elements are designed to speed up page loading times, they can also clutter your browser and consume system resources, leading to slowdowns.

Clearing your browsing history can give Safari a fresh start and potentially improve its performance. Here’s how to delete Safari’s history on Mac :

  • If not already open, launch the Safari browser on your Mac.
  • Click the Safari menu item at the top left of your screen. From the drop-down menu, select Settings .

  • Confirm the action by clicking the Remove button in the confirmation dialog box.

click remove on the pop up

  • Wait for the uninstallation process to complete.
  • Restart your browser to ensure the extension has been completely removed.

7. Disable Search Engine Suggestions

Search engine suggestions are generated in real-time as you type into the search bar, which can sometimes slow down Safari, especially on slower internet connections or older Mac models. Disabling this feature can reduce the load on Safari and potentially improve its speed.

Here’s how you can disable search engine suggestions on Safari:

  • Launch Safari, click Safari in the menu bar and select Settings from the drop-down menu.

If Safari is your browser of choice, you know that it's typically speedy and dependable. When your Safari browser slows down or is misbehaving in some way, and you've already established that your internet service is up and running, you can take a few actions that may return Safari to its previously snappy performance.

Instructions in this article apply to all versions of Safari.

Before you try the various tuneup techniques, update Safari if it isn't the current version.

Apple spends a lot of time developing the core technology that Safari uses. Having the most current version of Safari is one of the best ways to ensure a fast and responsive Safari experience.

Apple ties Safari updates to the version of macOS that you're using. To keep Safari up to date, you need to keep the Mac operating system up to date. If you’re a heavy user of Safari, it pays to keep OS X or macOS current.

How to Speed Up Safari

These tuneup tips can affect performance to varying degrees, but most of them offer only minor improvements in recent versions of Safari. Over time, Apple modified some of the routines in Safari to optimize performance. As a result, some tuneup techniques that created substantial performance increases in early versions of Safari result in only mild improvements in later versions. However, it doesn't hurt to give them a try.

Safari stores the web pages you view, including any images that are part of the pages, in a local cache, because it can then render cached pages faster than new pages the next time you visit the site. The problem with the Safari cache is that it eventually grows huge, causing Safari to slow down while it looks up a cached page to determine whether to load that page or download a new version .

Deleting the Safari cache can temporarily improve page loading times until the cache expands again and becomes too large for Safari to sort through efficiently, at which time you'll need to delete it again.

To delete the Safari cache:

Open Safari on your Mac.

Open Preferences under the Safari menu.

You can also open Preferences by pressing Command + , (comma) on your keyboard.

Select the Privacy tab.

Select Manage Website Data .

Click Remove All .

A warning message appears. Click Remove Now to clear the cache and cookies.

Select Done to close the window.

In older versions of Safari, select Empty Cache under the Develop menu or press Option + Shift + E on your keyboard.

If you don't see Develop, here's how to enable Safari's Develop menu .

Safari maintains a history of every web page you view, which has the practical benefit of letting you use the forward and back buttons to load recently viewed pages. It also lets you go back in time to find and view a web page that you forgot to bookmark.

The history is helpful, but like other forms of caching, it can become a hindrance. If you only visit a few pages a day, that's not a lot of page history to store. If you visit hundreds of pages each day, the History file can quickly get out of hand.

To delete the history in Safari:

Select Clear History from History in the Safari menu bar.

Select all history from the drop-down menu next to Clear . Other options include the last hour , today , and today and yesterday .

Choose Clear History .

You may have tried out a Safari plug-in that provided what appeared to be a useful service, but after a while, you stopped using it because it didn’t meet your needs. At some point, you forget about these plug-ins, but they're still in Safari, consuming space and resources.

To remove unused plug-ins:

Choose Safari > Preferences from the Safari menu bar.

Click the Websites tab.

Find the plug-ins at the bottom of the left panel and deselect unused plug-ins by removing the check in the box next to it.

Don't automatically deselect every plug-in without reading its name and deciding you don't need it. You may be using a plug-in without being aware of it. Click on any active plug-in for information about it.

Extensions are similar in concept to plug-ins. Both provide capabilities that Safari doesn't have on its own. Just like plug-ins, extensions can cause issues with performance when there are a large number of extensions installed, the extensions are competing, or the extensions have origins or purposes you've long since forgotten.

To get rid of unused extensions:

Choose Preferences from the Safari menu.

Select the Extensions tab.

The extensions are listed in the left panel. Deselect an unused extension by removing the check from the box next to it.

Highlight an extension and choose the Uninstall button to remove it completely.

Here, we provide you with 9 feasible solutions to help you speed up Safari on Mac, thus fixing the Safari running slow on Mac problem. You can perform the following solutions one by one to check if any of them will work.

Check for network connection problems

If you find the website you open in Safari takes too long to load, or even fails to load, it's a good idea to check the network connection, and see if the culprit is not inside Safari itself. Sometimes, a bad network connection will lead to the unstable performance of Safari. So, whenever you feel Safari is slower than usual, check your network first.

Shut down unneeded apps and resource-intensive programs

Safari will run much slower than normal when you have countless applications or resource-intensive programs opened on your Mac. In this situation, those apps and programs take up the most CPU usage, and thus there's not much left for Safari. So, to speed up Safari on Mac, you can quit or force-quit those apps not actively used on the  Mac Dock .

Also, if you want to sort apps and find those consume too much processing power and memory, use the  Activity Monitor  to help you, here's how:

  • Go to  Mac Launchpad  > Others, find Activity Monitor, and launch it.
  • In the Activity Monitor window, click on the CPU tab or Memory tab in the top menu.

Close unnecessary tabs in Safari

When you are searching for information or just browsing interesting websites in Safari, you may open a lot of tabs without realizing it. Too many tabs open in Safari will get Safari running slow on Mac. Because this Apple's default browser keeps many of those tabs active in the background, even when you are not using them.

close unnecessary tabs in Safari

So, you can speed up Safari on Mac by simply closing those unnecessary tabs. Remember to bookmark those websites you actively used in case of accidentally closing.

Optimize your Mac

Too many junk files on your Mac disk can have devastating consequences for your Mac's overall performance. A Mac with limited free space on the startup disk is likely to freeze, clutter, and crash, thus making Safari run slow. In this case, you can  free up space on Mac  to speed up Safari with  iBoysoft DiskGeeker .

iBoysoft DiskGeeker is one of the leading macOS optimizers in the market. It is able to remove useless clutters from hard drives on your Mac. Disable or remove unnecessary Safari extensions

Though some of the Safari extensions are quite useful, they can do more harm than good by affecting the browsing experience and the loading speed. Besides, extensions eat up resources. So, in this situation, you can either turn off or directly remove those unused or not frequently used extensions in Safari.

Here's how to speed up Safari on Mac by disabling and removing Safari extensions:

  • Launch Safari on your Mac.
  • Click Safari in the  Apple Menu , choose Preferences, then click on the Extensions tab.

Developed for macOS

Safari has experienced a major overhaul with the release of macOS Big Sur . Safari fans have a lot to look forward to, not just because of the new features, but also in terms of speed and performance as well.

According to Apple, the new Safari is going to be twice as fast as Google Chrome. If this is true, that’s a huge leap in speed. And since the browser is optimized for Mac, it is less power-hungry and can provide you with more browsing and streaming time.

But did you know that Safari is more than that? There are several tips and tricks you can apply to boost speed and performance of Safari.

Why Is Safari Slow?

Most of the time, Safari offers the fastest and most efficient browsing performance for Mac users because Apple puts a lot of resources into optimizing its performance and energy consumption. But there are times when Safari becomes extremely slow or not performing properly due to some reason. It can even be unresponsive even if you’re not doing intensive.

Pro Tip: Scan your Mac for performance issues, junk files, harmful apps, and security threats that can cause system issues or slow performance.

Special offer. About Outbyte , uninstall instructions , EULA , Privacy Policy .

If Safari is too slow or is not performing properly, the first thing you need to do is check your internet connection. The problem might be caused by a poor internet connection. If you have a problem with your internet, then your browser will be greatly affected.

An outdated Safari also tends to be more prone to performance issues and slow speed. So if it’s been some time since you last updated your browser, you might need to check if there’s any update that you need to install.

Sometimes Safari can’t run properly if you have too many tabs open, you have a pile of cached files stored on your browser, or some extensions are not compatible with your browser.

Regardless of the reason, a slow Safari is a common cause of headaches for Mac users. If you find your browser unusually slow, you can speed up Safari with these tips.

How to Make Safari Browser Faster

If your Safari browser is crashing, freezing, or sluggish, you can tweak some settings to speed it up. Here’s how to speed up Safari in nine ways:

1. Restart and Install Updates.

Restart and Install Updates

A simple restarting of your computer can fix many computer troubles, including a slow Safari. It should always be the first thing you should try when troubleshooting such issues. Just click the Apple menu then choose Restart.

After your Mac boots up, check if you have any outstanding Safari app updates in App Store > Updates. You should also check if there are pending macOS updates.

2. Close Unnecessary Tabs.

Close Unnecessary Tabs

Do you have more than 10 or 20 tabs open every time you use Safari? How many of those tabs do you actually need? All your tabs remain active in the background, even if you’re not really using them. The easiest way to speed up Safari to close all tabs that you don’t need. Or you can choose to restart Safari and get rid of all the open tabs. Press Command + Q or click the X button to quit Safari.

3. Delete the Safari Cache.

Delete the Safari Cache

Just like other browsers, Safari also saves a cache of data from the websites you access. This is so that you don’t have to fetch this data the next time you visit. This cached data eats up disk space, contributing to performance problems. It’s always a good idea to clean up Safari regularly by emptying the cache. This is particularly useful in improving the browser’s performance.

To clear your Safari browser’s cache:

  • Open Safari , then click Safari > Preferences from the top menu bar.
  • Click on the Advanced tab, and tick off Show Develop menu.
  • Close the Preferences window.
  • Click Develop > Empty Caches from the top menu to delete all cache.

4. Remove Faulty Extensions.

Safari has a wide selection of useful extensions Mac users can install, but there are times when they do more harm than good. This is especially true for extensions that directly impact the browsing experience.

To isolate the misbehaving extension, disable all your extensions under Safari > Preferences > Extensions by unchecking the box next to it. Next, re-enable the extensions one by one to find the culprit. You don’t have to worry because disabling extensions this way doesn’t remove them. If you want to completely remove them, you need to click the Uninstall button.

5. Restrict Plug-Ins.

Apple has been trying to eliminate plug-ins from the Safari browser, but some might cause performance issues or slow down occasionally. This happens when you’re running an older version of Safari. Make sure to configure plug-ins to ask you before Safari loads them. The same is true for other security settings.

To review this, go to Safari > Preferences > Websites to check which websites have requested access to your Mac. Go through the list and disable access for the websites that don’t need it. Disable auto-play as much as necessary.

If you’re using an older version of Safari, go to Safari > Preferences > Security > Plug-In Settings and set the plug-ins to Ask before they start running.

6. Identify Faulty Websites.

Is there a particular website that causes Safari to slow to a crawl? Websites can cause your browser to crash if it has too many scripts, auto-playing ads, rogue extensions, and problematic embeds. This can bring, not just your Safari but your entire Mac, to a grinding halt.

To fix this problem, do the following:

  • Open Activity Monitor under Applications > Utilities.
  • In the CPU tab, arrange the processes by name and find Safari.
  • Check the % CPU column and close your Safari tabs one by one to see which has the biggest effect on your CPU usage.
  • Once you’ve found that tab, make sure to block that website to prevent Safari from visiting that URL again.

7. Make Sure You Have Enough Storage Space.

Low disk space can impact your Mac’s overall performance. It is more likely to freeze, stutter, slow down, and crash. Safari is often one of the first apps impacted by this problem, so it is one of the signs that you need to free up some space.

For best performance, keep a healthy buffer of at least 10GB or more of free space. If you’re out of space, you can use a Mac cleaner to remove junk files from your computer.

8. Fix Other Performance Issues.

Boosting your Mac’s overall system performance will also boost speed and performance of Safari. This is because your resources are not tied up in non-critical tasks, making them available for Safari. You can close all unnecessary apps running in the background or disable some of the login items that load during startup. Keeping your Mac running in perfect condition also improves your Safari’s performance.

What’s Next?

The steps above should be enough to boost speed and performance of Safari, but it is also important to keep a backup browser just in case. You can try installing Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for when Safari becomes too slow to use.

Best Download Manager Apps for iOS

When we first published this article, Safari on the iPhone and iPad lacked download management capabilities, and the only way to manage downloads was to use a third-party app for it.

But lately, Apple introduced native file management on the iPhone and iPad with the Files app in 2017. Two years later, Safari got its Download Manager, letting users store and manage downloads via the Files app on iPhone and iPad.

Over time, there have been improvements to the native download manager in Safari, which has made it one of the best download managers for the iPhone and iPad. But even so, there are a few things you need to set up to get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager.

This article will explore how to use Safari’s Download Manager to its full potential, as well as some third-party apps for download management on iPhone and iPad.

Note: The criteria for considering an app as a decent download manager for iOS still remains the same as before. The app should primarily be able to download all file types, display download speed, provide resume support for in-progress downloads, etc. It should also allow you to export the downloaded files to other apps, and provide basic support for opening common photo, audio, video & document formats.

Copy   Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Here, we’ll guide you to set up Safari on iOS and iPadOS, to get the most out of its Download Manager.

Copy   Set up your Download Manager

To get the most out of Safari’s Download Manager, it’s preferable to go through some basic setup.

The Downloads icon appears in the top-right corner within Safari, next to the address bar. But this icon is hidden by default unless a file is added to the download queue.

Safari Download Manager on iOS, iPadOS

Now, you might have noticed that the icon automatically disappears after some time, even if you’ve downloaded files in the past.

If you need access to your download list items (Download History) at all times, there is an option you need to modify. The following steps will guide you to always show the Downloads icon in Safari.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and tap on Safari .
  • Under the “General” section, tap on Downloads .
  • Tap on Remove Download List Items , and select Manually .

While you’re here, you may also want to change the location for your downloads. By default, Safari saves your downloads in the Downloads folder within iCloud Drive.

If you frequently download files using Safari, that could consume unnecessary storage on iCloud, especially if you forget to delete temporary downloads. To avoid such a situation, it’s recommended that you change your Downloads location outside of iCloud Drive.

Set up Safari's Download Manager - iPhone and iPad

To do so, go to the Settings app, and navigate to Safari >> Downloads (under “General” section), and choose the On My iPhone/iPad option under the “Store Downloaded Files On” section, to save your downloads to the local Downloads folder. Alternatively, you may choose a custom location for your Downloads, by selecting “Other…” and choosing the appropriate folder.

Thereafter, when you download a file in Safari, it will be saved to your device in the selected location, and the same will be available in Safari’s Download List. And, as long as you don’t “Clear” the entire list, the Downloads icon should remain visible next to the address bar.

Note: To clear individual items from the Downloads list, go to Safari, tap on the Downloads icon, and instead of tapping on “Clear”, slide a specific item in the list from the right to reveal the Delete option, and then tap on Delete .

Copy   How to Download files in Safari on iPhone, iPad

If you open a download link in Safari, there are two possible outcomes.

  • You get a pop-up with the options to either “View” or “Download” the file, or both.
  • The content or media behind the link directly opens in Safari.

Download files in Safari on iPhone, iPad

In the first scenario, you can tap on the Download button in the pop-up, which starts downloading the file.

In the second scenario, the below section(s) will guide you to download such files.

Copy   Download files instead of opening them in Safari

Download files instead of opening them in Safari

Some files, such as PDF, MP4, etc., may directly open in Safari when you click on a download link instead of showing the Download prompt. To download these files in Safari, do the following:

  • Open the web page containing the download link in Safari on the iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap and hold the download link to pop out and reveal additional options.
  • Scroll down through the associated options, and tap on Download Linked File .

The file will be added to the Downloads List (queue) in Safari and start downloading.

Copy   Download files when the “Download Linked File” option is not available

If opening a direct download link in Safari doesn’t provide the “Download” pop-up, or if the “Download Linked File” option doesn’t appear when you tap & hold an embedded link, here is what you can do to download these files using Safari.

Download files when the “Download Linked File” option is not available

  • Open the link in Safari for iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap on the Share icon from the bottom of the screen.
  • Scroll and select the Save to Files option.
  • Choose a preferred location to save the file, and tap on Save from the top right corner.

The file would be saved in the selected location.

Note: If the link is for an audio or video file, Safari will open it in its built-in media player. In this case, tap on the screen to reveal the player controls, and tap on the ‘X’ to close the player. Now you should be back in the Safari window, with the URL of the media available on the address bar. Proceed with Step #2 above to download the file.

Copy   Download Video from streaming sites in Safari on iPhone, iPad

If you want to download embedded videos or audio via Safari, you can use any suitable web media grabber, such as 9xBuddy , to parse the streaming link and get the direct download link to the source video or audio file.

Once you get the direct download link, you can download it in Safari just like any other file, as mentioned in the above sections. You may refer to this section of our dedicated article to learn how to do so.

Copy   Other Features of Safari’s Download Manager on iPhone and iPad

Resume Support: In Safari, if you access the Downloads list (by clicking on the Download icon next to the address bar) while downloading a file, you can pause a download temporarily by tapping on the “X” next to the file, and it changes to the “Resume” icon. You can come back later and resume the download again (if the server supports it) by tapping on the “Resume” icon. The Downloads list also allows you to view the progress of current downloads.

Background Downloads: Once a download starts, you may switch to other apps and continue working. The download should continue in the background without interruption. In our experience, background downloads in Safari on iPhone and iPad work much more reliably compared to background downloads on third-party download managers.

Hence, Safari’s built-in download manager on iOS and iPadOS is now powerful enough to handle and manage different types of file downloads. But if you still want to explore other third-party online downloader apps, the below section explores a few of them.

Copy   Third-party Download Manager apps for iPhone and iPad

Copy   documents – file manager with downloader.

Documents is one of the most popular file management apps on the iOS platform but also serves as a decent file downloader, especially because of its native support for a wide variety of file types both for viewing as well as for downloading. Being a full-fledged file management app, you can organize and store your files, and view them without having to export them to any other app.

Documents – File Manager with Downloader

Documents app provides additional features, including the option to add different connections (WebDAV, SFTP, SMB, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), rename the file, and set the download location at the time of file download, etc.

Documents app  is completely free without any limitations or ads. You can learn more about the versatile iOS file manager app, in our dedicated article.

Copy   Total Downloader – Download Manager for iPhone, iPad

Total Downloader is a file and download manager for iOS that satisfies almost all of the criteria to be considered as a decent download manager. Its built-in browser supports universal search and can download any type of file format.

From a particular web page, you can tap on a download link, and choose between whether you want to Download or Open (Navigate) it. Unlike many other downloader apps which directly open the file on clicking on the download button, Total handles it smartly by letting you decide the subsequent action.

Total Downloader - iPhone Download Manager

The Downloads tab in the Transfers screen lists all the active and inactive download tasks, which includes the current speed of the download, size of the download, and other details. Tapping on a particular download will allow you to Pause, Resume or Cancel the download. Completed downloads appear in the files tab, from where you can play or open the file, or export it to Photos (for photos and videos only) or other apps using the Open In option.

One of the most unique features of Total is its ability to grab embedded media links from specific streaming sites, like Facebook, Vimeo, Instagram, etc. But to avoid legal issues, it explicitly disables the grabbing functionality from certain sites that primarily host original copyrighted content from artists/creators.

Total also has certain features of a file manager app. It supports the opening of common text, photo, audio, video, documents, and archive formats, also integrating a bunch of cloud services, including Dropbox Google Drive, OneDrive, and WebDAV services. Thus, you can directly sync the downloaded files with your preferred cloud service, and even stream media files from the cloud.

Some of the other notable features of Total include private browsing mode, bookmarks, and history management, user agent spoofing, PIN-protected folders, and much more.

The free version of Total is ad-supported. You can remove ads and upgrade to the pro version of the app with an in-app purchase of $4.99.

Copy   Files – Download Manager for iOS

Files app (not to be confused with Apple’s app of the same name) is quite simple in its look and feel, yet powerful to handle any type of download link we throw at it. The app has four sections, a web browser, a download manager, a section for the downloaded files, and Settings. The built-in web browser provides specific settings for the default search engine, user agent (Mobile Safari or Firefox), and custom MIME types that define how the app handles different types of download links. You can either type a complete URL or use a search phrase on the browser’s unified search bar.

Files - Download Manager App for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Files also have a Safari Bookmarklet, which allows you to transfer download links from the iOS Safari browser to the Files’ built-in browser, where you can download from the available links. Even if a particular file type is not supported for download, you can manually define how the app handles it, by adding it as a new MIME type. Alternatively, you can tap & hold the download link and select Download Linked File As option.

Note: If the download URL string is long, the action choices for tap & hold may not be visible fully, especially on small screen devices, such as the 4-inch iPhone. You need to scroll through the list of available options and select the preferred one instead. The Downloads tab shows all the active downloads, along with their download speed and progress. You can tap on the download and select Copy Address from the pop-up to get its source URL or tap on the stop/resume button next to the download to control the operation as preferred.

The app could also serve as a file manager, with a built-in document viewer for PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, TXT, HTML, and RTF file formats, ability to extract ZIP and RAR archives, photo viewer, and media player.

The app provides decent import and export options for exchanging files with other apps, and also with other devices, including AirDrop/Share menu, iTunes File Sharing, FTP transfer, etc.

The free version of Files provides for limited downloads and storage. To remove the limitation, you can upgrade to the Pro version via in-app purchase, for $4.99.

Being a native solution, Safari’s Download Manager provides the best overall experience when it comes to downloading files on your iPhone and iPad, especially with background downloads.

But as described above, a few of the third-party solutions offer some advanced features, such as automatic media grabbing, additional protocol integrations, better download management options, etc.

Wish there could’ve been better way of selecting Words.

Selecting words is a bit difficulty as for going back in safari search click on the word which must be inside the screen to fit if it’s left behind the word you have to hold space bar and then go back and it’s so slow in going back and we have to go in the extreme left corner for it to scroll back then only you can go back and the speed is insane to go forward it should’ve been like that for backward also. So that’s why 4 Star everything else is good and PDF’s should be downloadable by pressing the left button beside the website name. That’s a drawback I have to find a way of downloading the PDF as some websites don’t give you the access to download and safari should add this critical feature for downloading in just a click, if a website doesn’t allow we have to manually go in apps like acrobat or make a way around it it’s just a big hassle. This is a critical feature for downloading and it should be implemented.

Very safe browser

I have been using safari since I got my iPhone,Safari is an awesome app by . It is the fastest browser that I would have ever used. The best part about this browser is that it prevents trackers from tracking and also gives a report of how many trackers has it prevented from tracking. Also with Safari it is ready to access passwords that are saved in your Apple ID. Even that’s got even more security, it simply asks for your face recognition or Touch ID. Looking further towards more improvements from . Thank You.😃

Safari is good but not great…( suggestion )

The reason I say this for both on iPhone and iPad . The safari is good in itself but the problem comes it that it doesn’t have an option to access its features , options and various settings within safari itself . For example if I want to enable ‘desktop website’ for a specific website , I have to go to settings , to safari then turn it on but this causes it to apply it on all the web pages I open . So that’s all . I think any native user won’t know this but I am a cross platform user of different browsers and I don’t want to switch to other browser on apple…so if you could add the submenu option of list of features to every webpage , that would be great. Thanks

The performance of your browser is difficult to separate from the speed of your internet connection, so you might find yourself a little lost when looking for the fastest browser on the web. Browser speed also often changes with each update, so there’s a good chance any information you might find about a browser’s speed will be outdated.

That’s why we tested the desktop versions of all the major internet browsers and compiled their results in this browser speed overview. We tested a total of 10 web browsers and picked what we believe are the five fastest internet browsers on the web.

Key Takeaways:

  • Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge were nearly tied for first place, but we think Chrome is the faster web browser.
  • Speed can come at the cost of other important factors in a browser, such as security and features.
  • Some browsers are faster when dealing with certain kinds of web applications than others. For example, one that’s fast with standard web applications might be slower when rendering visuals, or vice versa.

Ran new speed tests and chose a new ranking to reflect up-to-date results. Removed Firefox and Chromium; added Microsoft Edge.

Fastest Web Browsers

What Makes the Fastest Browser & Which Browser Is the Fastest?

When we’re assessing the speed of a browser, we look at its ability to execute web applications and render visuals. Handling standard web applications is the most important criterion because that’s what the majority of web browsing activity consists of. However, we don’t overlook the more advanced, resource-heavy applications, either.

  • Chrome — The overall fastest browser, and one of the most popular browsers
  • Microsoft Edge — A close runner-up to Chrome, and Chrome’s equal in practice
  • Opera — The third-fastest browser, but its speed is hampered by its abundance of features
  • Brave — It’s not the fastest, but it is the most secure browser on this list, with built-in privacy and security features that don’t burden its great performance
  • Vivaldi — Consumes a lot of RAM, but includes resource-saving features like hibernating tabs

We also take visual graphics rendering into account, as you’ll see in our results below, but it’s not the most significant factor. Each browser has its strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll see how some browsers perform better in some areas than others.

How Did We Determine the Fastest Web Browsers?

Testing the speed of a browser is a delicate task because the browser’s speed must be parsed out from your internet connection’s speed. That’s why we use the suite of benchmark tests provided by BrowserBench. These three tests — Speedometer 2.0, JetStream 2 and Motion Mark — each analyze different aspects of your web browser .

We performed these tasks on an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Desktop Mini with 16GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5-9500T CPU running at  2.21 GHz. It runs on the Windows 10, 20H2 operating system and contains an Intel UHD Graphics 630 graphics card.

It’s not always clear how much of your browser’s speed is influenced by your internet connection or the browser itself. That’s why we closed all other applications while we ran the tests over a stable connection. No other machines were connected to the network during the tests, so our speed results are as unadulterated as we could get them.

Speedometer 2.0

We place the greatest emphasis on Speedometer because its results illustrate the most comprehensive overview of your browser’s performance. It runs 480 standard JavaScript web applications and monitors how quickly your browser can handle each of them. The app averages the results indicating the total number of runs per minute the browser is capable of.

JetStream 2

The next test, JetStream 2, calculates advanced and uncommon web applications. Like Speedometer, JetStream makes the browser perform a series of web applications and delivers an averaged result. There wasn’t as wide a gap between the speed results of most browsers in this test as there was in Speedometer, so it made less of an impact on our browser ranking.

The third test, MotionMark, calculates your browser’s ability to quickly render advanced visual graphics in heavy loads.

Web Browser Speed Comparison: What Is the Fastest Browser?

Chrome and Edge were so close in each of our tests that they hardly differed from one another. The one test where Edge bested Chrome was in JetStream 2, where it got the upper hand by just a hair. In practice, they are equally fast and responsive browsers.

Brave, Opera and Vivaldi make up the remainder of our top five. Once again, their performance was so close that they went up and down the rankings by very small margins. The biggest differences emerged in the MotionMark test, where Brave was clearly the faster browser when rendering complex visual graphics, but they are all acceptably fast browsers in practice.

Benchmark Test: Speedometer

In the first and most important test, Chrome took the number one spot. Chrome does reliably well when handling JavaScript web applications, and Edge isn’t much worse. In third place came Opera, after a much wider gap, and Brave and Vivaldi were close enough to Opera to be indistinguishable.

Browser Runs Per Minute: Speedometer

Benchmark Test: JetStream 2

Edge was faster than Chrome for advanced JavaScript responsiveness in this test, but by a very slight margin. Meanwhile, Chromium raced ahead of Brave, Opera and Vivaldi while lagging behind in the other tests.

Browser Runs Per Minute, JetStream 2

Tor Browser returned an “infinity” score for this benchmark test, which we can’t interpret. Opera Neon can’t process WebAssembly or JavaScript code, so it wouldn’t run on this JetStream2 test.

Benchmark Test: MotionMark

Chrome turned out to be the most graphics-capable browser in MotionMark, just slightly ahead of Edge once again.

Opera Neon unexpectedly seized third place, despite being one of the slowest browsers we’ve ever reviewed. It’s an impressive turn of events for Opera Neon, but we excluded it from the top five for its overall sluggishness.

Browser Runs Per Minute: MotionMark

The 5 Fastest Web Browsers

Now with our overview out of the way, let’s take a closer look at each individual browser’s performance.

1. Google Chrome

chrome google

  • Easy to use
  • Largest library of extensions
  • Wide range of in-browser features
  • Pretty fast
  • Cross-device synchronization
  • Serious privacy concerns

Chrome is the most popular internet browser (with an estimated global market share of around 60% ) in the world and, currently, the fastest. It took first place in all but one of our tests, and was very close to Edge where it fell into second place.

Without any extensions installed, Chrome responded well to a range of JavaScript applications and complex visual graphics. Some of the browsers in this list were better at some tasks rather than others, but Chrome delivers uniform results across the board.

Great Ease-of-Use

Simplicity is one of Chrome’s biggest strengths. Its easy-to-use interface played a big role in its popularity and is now the template for most contemporary browsers. Chrome is rather plain by itself, but you can add more features through the Chrome web store — the world’s largest library of extensions.

chrome web store

Chrome is a well-rounded browser in almost every way, especially in speed. We’ve never had a problem with Chrome running slowly except at the highest loads, so we can confidently recommend Chrome for its speed. Read our full Google Chrome review for more details.

2. Microsoft Edge

edge desktop

  • Lots of features
  • Compatible with most Chrome extensions
  • Not the most private browser

In practice, Edge is every bit as fast as Chrome. It used to be much slower before it was redesigned with Chromium in 2020, but now it can process JavaScript web applications and render visuals with ease.

Built-in Features

Like Chrome, Edge is a simple browser that’s great for everyday web browsing. It has plenty of useful features built into the interface like device sync, an extensive context menu, and a handy “collections” tool. Compatibility with Chrome extensions is a nice plus as well.

edge vertical tabs

Edge doesn’t have a lot to offer that isn’t already available in Chrome, but it’s a lot faster than every other alternative. Read our full Microsoft Edge review and our Microsoft Edge vs Chrome for more information.

opera speed dial

  • Lots of built-in features
  • Multiple mobile versions
  • Anonymous & easy device sync
  • Privacy & security concerns
  • Mini & Touch Android-only
  • Uses a lot of RAM

If Chrome and Edge were tied for first place, that would make Opera the runner-up. There’s a bigger gap between the top two browsers and Opera than there are between Chrome and Edge, so it’s not in the same league when it comes to speed — at least on paper. In reality, there’s nothing noticeably slower about Opera, as it performs excellently with little to no latency.

It took third place in Speedometer and fourth in JetStream 2, losing to Chromium. Although Chromium did better in this test, it’s an overall slower browser, so we think Opera deserves the third spot on this list. It fell much farther behind when rendering visual graphics, but because that’s not the most important criterion for good web browsing, we don’t place as much emphasis on that test.

No Extensions Necessary

Many browsers today, such as Chrome, are very basic on their own and rely on extensions to increase the browser’s functionality. Opera’s basic philosophy is to include enough features to make extensions less important, if not unnecessary altogether. It offers features like built-in social media and communication apps, device sync, a crypto wallet and much more.

opera slider 1

Adding too many extensions can slow down your browser’s performance, so feature-rich browsers like Opera and its spin-off, Vivaldi, perform more efficiently than a browser with a large number of extensions.

We praise Opera and Vivaldi highly, but because Opera is the overall faster browser, we chose to place it higher up on this list. Read our full Opera review and Opera vs Chrome guides for more details.

brave new tab

  • Advanced security & privacy
  • Fast & memory-efficient
  • Built-in ad-blocker & crypto wallet
  • Privacy-based advertising model & reward system
  • Infrequent update cycle

Brave — our best browser for Mac — came behind Opera by such a small margin in Speedometer that they were virtually identical. Brave and Opera reversed roles for the subsequent two tests, with Brave falling behind Opera when managing advanced and uncommon applications, but surpassing Opera in its ability to render complex visual graphics.

Excellent Browser for Privacy

We like Brave for being a private and secure browser. It was designed with privacy in mind from the beginning, featuring a built-in ad-blocker, HTTPS Everywhere and an innovative advertising model that protects your privacy rather than compromising it.

Brave-Shields

Good privacy and security often comes at the cost of speed, but Brave is still a fast, responsive and secure browser, even if it’s not the fastest. Read our full Brave review for more information.

vivaldi duckduckgo

  • Customizable
  • Low RAM consumption
  • Great for power users
  • No iOS version
  • Mobile version is less user-friendly than on desktop

Vivaldi’s performance was nearly equal to Brave and Opera in Speedometer, but came up noticeably short in speed when producing complex visuals in MotionMark. It was still a close race when it came to handling advanced web applications in JetStream.

A Browser for Power Users

Developed by the co-founder of Opera, Vivaldi was designed with Opera’s philosophy of a fully featured browser in mind. Vivaldi takes features and customization options even further than Opera and even includes performance-enhancing features such as hibernating tabs.

vivaldi stack tabs

It’s not the fastest browser, and high RAM use is one of its major downsides. Fortunately, its hibernating tabs option evens out some of the flaws and can improve the browser’s overall speed and resource usage. This option will keep the selected tabs open but not running, so your system’s resources are freed up for the other open tabs. Read our full Vivaldi review for more details.

Honorable Mentions: Not-Quite-So-Fast Browser Options

We tested many more browsers than the five you see above. The remainder of the browsers were obviously not as fast, but there were a few with other noteworthy traits that make up for their slower speeds.

firefox dark theme

Firefox was one of the faster browsers that didn’t make the cut. Its overall ability to process JavaScript-based web applications was acceptable in its speed, as measured by Speedometer.

However, it fell much farther behind when faced with advanced and uncommon applications, and with rendering complex visuals. It’s an excellent browser for basic tasks like daily browsing and email, but fails at more advanced tasks.

There’s still a lot to like about Firefox despite its moderate speeds. It’s a far more private browser than Chrome because Mozilla’s source of revenue isn’t derived from collecting the data of its users for advertising purposes. Read our Firefox vs Chrome and Opera vs Firefox guides to learn how it compares to the fastest browsers.

It’s also easy to use and has hundreds of useful add-ons in its extensions library, even though it’s not as large as Chrome’s collection. Read our full Firefox review for more information.

reading list

Chromium maintained sluggish speeds during two of our tests, but snagged third place in JetStream 2. Chromium and Chrome are almost exactly the same because Chromium is the open-source browser framework Chrome is based on.

Chromium is intended for use in browser development rather than for general consumer browsing, and is therefore very unstable. Be sure to read our Chromium vs Chrome to learn how the two browser foundations compare.

Its long load time sets it apart from Chrome, along with its incompatibility with Google accounts and device sync with other platforms, so there wouldn’t be much point in using Chromium except for development purposes. Despite its typically inadequate speed, it can quickly handle advanced and uncommon web applications. Read the full Chromium review for more details.

Final Thoughts: Fastest Browsers

It was a close race in this round of browser speed tests. Chrome and Edge were just about tied for first, but the victory ultimately goes to Chrome by a small margin. Brave, Opera and Vivaldi fought hard to win the runner-up positions and are just about equal in overall performance, but some of these browsers found their strengths where others were weak.

This article focuses only on speed, but we have a library of articles that go into greater detail on every entry on this list. You can look through our browser reviews here .

We’ve mentioned that good privacy and security protections can come at the cost of speed. If you value a secure browser over a fast one, we recommend reading our overview of the five most secure browsers . Puffin — the best browser for Android — impressed us enough to take the number one spot, while its desktop version came in dead last in terms of speed.

What do you think of our five fastest selections? Do you think our criteria and ranking were fair? Was there an even faster browser than Chrome that we overlooked? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and as always, thanks for reading.

Chrome is the fastest internet browser we tested. Edge followed closely behind. Opera was a fast web browser as well, but slower than Edge.

On the whole, Chrome is the fastest web browser, but Edge marginally surpassed Chrome on one of the three benchmark tests.

Both are about the same, but Chrome wins in two of the three speed categories.

Wow, pretty pathetic scores overall. Was that because the Computer (doubtful, this is a browser test, should be easily performed by the computer). windows (maybe).

These are my scores on my M1 MBP for Safari on Ventura beta: Speedometer: 340, motionmark: 3063, Jetstream 221. Brave and chrome were close, Firefox less than half on Jetstream, Other browsers were about 40% of Safari on Motionmark, No other browser even topped 300 on speedometer. So probably windows then, way faster than your published results

it does depend on the computer. the point of browser tests is to push them to their limit. the same browser running on 2GB RAM with Celeron isn’t gonna perform as good when it’s run on a 32 GB RAM computer with the latest i9.

if you call these scores pathetic, go get chrome and do the same tests.

Is there a Mod version of Opera that’s faster than Chrome and Edge?

I did all of these tests on the latest Safari using an M1 Mac and it destroys all these results.

Thats not because of Safari though

that’s because these scores are dependent on your machine. if you want accurate results, also redo the tests for the other browsers as well.

on my potato PC, all of these browsers got almost half the score

There’s NO way Chrome is the fastest. Web browsing grinds to a halt when I open Chrome. I always get over 900Mbps with both the command line tests, but speedtest.net in browser is always around 300Mbps. How do I fix the difference?

Safari and Orion actually blow these scores away. Try a comparison.

Measuring speed of browsing with the BrowserBench.org suite is inadequate IMO. I say this because it isn’t measuring actual browsing of the sites most people use. Even that can be misleading as the load at the time of their use can impact the presentation speed. I just ran the latest BrowserBench.org test suite (Speedometer 2.1, Jetstream 2.1, and Motion Mark 1.2) on the latest versions of SRWare Iron, Google Chrome, Vivaldi, AVG, Brave, Brave Beta, Brave Nightly, Opera, OmniWeb, iCab, Edge, Chromium, Safari, Avast, Firefox, Epic, LibreWolf, Waterfox, Tor, Mullvad, SeaMonkey, and Pale Moon and this order was the Speedometer 2.1 speed.

However, I do NOT think speed is paramount. I believe security and privacy are THE MOST IMPORTANT. The best test for Privacy and Tracking and Fingerprinting protection i have been able to find so far is EFF’s Cover Your Tracks. Anyone can use this. If you do you will find that ONLY ONE browser passes this on the MacOS Monterey 12.6.5… only one… the Brave browser.

This is why I invariably end up recommending the Brave browser after I test. Having said that i encourage every browser user to use EFF’s Cover Your Tracks tool to test your browser. The speed differences among the top 8 browsers are negligible in comparison to the privacy differences which are HUGE! Furthermore, I am not sure that Brave isn’t faster than all of them as it eliminates ads and trackers and saves a lot of time and angst in so doing not to mention the elimination of time lost following the ads.

I totally agree, my tests showed that Brave was faster than Chrome & Edge by not loading all the ads…

Safari the best, blazing fast for loading and rendering page contents, like no other.

There is a browser called thorium which uses AVX2. On the speedometer test I got a score infinity. Maybe try this browser out next time you do these tests.

You should test out a Chromium based browser called Thorium. Specifically the AVX2 version.

On Speedometer it scored 241; on JetStream it scored 211; and on MotionMark it scored 2375.

The developer also makes a Firefox fork called Mercury which is a lot faster than stock firefox.

I feel like most browsers today are based off of Chromium which now is mostly developed by Google and some input from Microsoft. Some browsers focus a bit more on privacy then others. Chrome probably the least privacy focused browser by its default settings.

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click the Privacy Report button in your toolbar for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Like iCloud Keychain, which securely stores and autofills your passwords across all your devices. If a password breach is detected, Password Monitoring alerts you. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And now Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Password Monitoring

If your password is involved in a data breach, Password Monitoring alerts you and helps you change your password.

Safari automatically keeps an eye out for any saved passwords that may have been involved in a data breach. Using advanced cryptographic techniques, Safari periodically checks a derivation of your passwords against an updated list of compromised credentials. If a breach is discovered, Safari helps you upgrade your existing passwords. All this is done without revealing your password information to anyone — including Apple.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

safari fast download

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Paving the Way to Extremely Fast, Compact Computer Memory

Illustration showing two corkscrew-shaped lines twisting in opposite directions, rising up out of a layer of small spheres that represent atoms, each with an arrow pointing in the direction of a feature called its magnetic moment

AUSTIN, Texas — For decades, scientists have been studying a group of unusual materials called multiferroics that could be useful for a range of applications including computer memory, chemical sensors and quantum computers. In a study published in Nature , researchers from The University of Texas at Austin and the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) demonstrated that the layered multiferroic material nickel iodide (NiI 2 ) may be the best candidate yet for devices that are extremely fast and compact.

Multiferroics have a special property called magnetoelectric coupling, which means that you can manipulate magnetic properties of the material with an electric field and vice versa, electric properties with magnetic fields. The researchers found NiI 2 has greater magnetoelectric coupling than any known material of its kind, making it a prime candidate for technology advances.

“Unveiling these effects at the scale of atomically thin nickel iodide flakes was a formidable challenge,” said Frank Gao, a postdoctoral fellow in physics at UT and co-lead author of the paper, “but our success presents a significant advancement in the field of multiferroics.”

“Our discovery paves the way for extremely fast and energy-efficient magnetoelectric devices, including magnetic memories,” added graduate student Xinyue Peng, the project’s other co-lead author.

Electric and magnetic fields are fundamental for our understanding of the world and for modern technologies. Inside a material, electric charges and atomic magnetic moments may order themselves in such a way that their properties add up, forming an electric polarization or a magnetization. Such materials are known as ferroelectrics or ferromagnets, depending on which of these quantities is in an ordered state.

However, in the exotic materials that are multiferroics, such electric and magnetic orders co-exist. The magnetic and electric orders can be entangled in such a way that a change in one causes a change in the other. This property, known as magnetoelectric coupling, makes these materials attractive candidates for faster, smaller and more efficient devices. For such devices to work effectively, it is important to find materials with particularly strong magnetoelectric coupling, as the research team describes doing with NiI 2 in their study.

The researchers accomplished this by exciting the material with ultrashort laser pulses in the femtosecond range (a millionth of a billionth of a second) and then tracking the resulting changes in the material’s electric and magnetic orders and magnetoelectric coupling via their impact on specific optical properties.

Illustration showing two corkscrew-shaped lines twisting in opposite directions, rising up out of a layer of small spheres that represent atoms, each with an arrow pointing in the direction of a feature called its magnetic moment

To understand why the magnetoelectric coupling is so much stronger in NiI 2 than in similar materials, the team performed extensive calculations.

“Two factors play important roles here,” said co-author Emil Viñas Boström of the MPSD. “One of them is the strong coupling between the electrons’ spin and orbital motion on the iodine atoms — that’s a relativistic effect known as spin-orbit coupling. The second factor is the particular form of the magnetic order in nickel iodide, known as a spin spiral or spin helix. This ordering is crucial both to initiate the ferroelectric order and for the strength of the magnetoelectric coupling.”

Materials like NiI 2 with large magnetoelectric coupling have a wide range of potential applications, according to the researchers. These include magnetic computer memory that is compact, energy efficient and can be stored and retrieved much faster than existing memory; interconnects in quantum computing platforms; and chemical sensors that can ensure quality control and drug safety in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

The researchers hope that these groundbreaking insights can be used to identify other materials with similar magnetoelectric properties and that other material engineering techniques could possibly lead to a further enhancement of the magnetoelectric coupling in NiI 2 .

This work was conceived and supervised by Edoardo Baldini, assistant professor of physics at UT, and Angel Rubio, director of the MPSD.

The paper’s other UT authors are Dong Seob Kim and Xiaoqin Li. Other authors of MPSD are Xinle Cheng and Peizhe Tang. Additional authors are Ravish K. Jain, Deepak Vishnu, Kalaivanan Raju, Raman Sankar and Shang-Fan Lee of Academia Sinica; Michael A. Sentef of the University of Bremen; and Takashi Kurumaji of the California Institute of Technology.

Funding for this research was provided by the Robert A. Welch Foundation, the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program, the Cluster of Excellence “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter,” Grupos Consolidados, the Max Planck-New York City Center for Non-Equilibrium Quantum Phenomena, the Simons Foundation and the Ministry of Science and Technology in Taiwan.

I Tried to Replace My MacBook With an iPad Pro: These Were the Biggest Drawbacks

Razer made a great mobile gaming controller that i wish cost half as much, how to fix the black screen of death on an iphone.

While browsing the web in Safari, it’s common to need to download files from different websites. But sometimes it can be a challenge to find where these Safari downloads are saved.

Below are several ways to find and manage Safari downloads on your Mac.

How to Download Files Using Safari

There are different ways to save items from Safari to your Mac , depending on the type of item you want to save. While some items in webpages can’t be downloaded, files, images, software, and apps often come with a dedicated download button. Otherwise, Control-click or two-finger tap an item to save or download it.

It’s best not to download software or apps if they aren’t from a trusted source.

Where to Find Safari Downloads on a Mac

Unless you’ve chosen otherwise, items that you’ve downloaded from Safari automatically go to your Downloads folder. To find this, open Finder and click Downloads from the sidebar or press Cmd + Option + L .

You can change where your downloaded files save, if you want:

  • Head to Safari > Preferences .
  • Click the General tab. Go to File download location , then choose from the popup. Select Ask for each download if you want to be in more control of each download.
  • If you want to select a specific destination, click Other and select your desired folder.

Use the Downloads Button in Safari

Quickly access your downloads in Safari by clicking the Downloads button, a downward arrow enclosed in a circle icon on the top-right of the Safari window. Note that this won’t appear unless you’ve recently downloaded an item.

Open the Downloads Stack in the Dock

Another way to immediately access your downloaded files is through the Dock. Your recent downloads are often found on the right side of the Dock in a stack. Hover over it to preview the contents or click to expand it.

Open the Downloads Folder in Finder

As we already mentioned, you can also find your Safari downloads using Finder. This is a valuable utility to locate items on our Mac. Simply click the magnifying button on your menu bar and type "downloads," or go to your Dock and click Finder to open the Finder window.

You can usually find the Downloads folder in the sidebar, under Favorites.

How to Manage Your Safari Downloads

There are several ways to manage your in-progress or completed downloads in Safari. To perform these actions, open the Downloads menu in Safari itself. Here’s what you can do:

  • Pause Downloads: If you’re currently downloading, click the stop button beside the file name to pause the download, then click the resume button to resume it again.
  • Remove a downloaded item: If you want to remove a single item from the list, Control-click the item and select Remove from List . You can also remove all your recently downloaded items by clicking Clear in the top right of the popup.

By default, Safari automatically deletes downloaded items after a day. If you want to change this:

  • Go to Safari > Preferences .
  • Click General , then go to Remove download list items . Choose from After one day , When Safari quits , Upon successful download , or Manually .

Manage Your Safari Downloads

There is a lot of content you can download on the web, and simply knowing how to download it is usually half the battle. But once you’ve done that, you can use the tips in this guide to find and manage your Safari downloads with ease, even customizing your download preferences to get fuller control over where your files save and when they get deleted.

We are also announcing safety features by default for GPT-4o mini, expanded data residency and service availability, plus performance upgrades to Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.

GPT-4o mini allows customers to deliver stunning applications at a lower cost with blazing speed. GPT-4o mini is significantly smarter than GPT-3.5 Turbo—scoring 82% on Measuring Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) compared to 70%—and is more than 60% cheaper. 1 The model delivers an expanded 128K context window and integrates the improved multilingual capabilities of GPT-4o, bringing greater quality to languages from around the world.

GPT-4o mini, announced by OpenAI today, is available simultaneously on Azure AI , supporting text processing capabilities with excellent speed and with image, audio, and video coming later. Try it at no cost in the Azure OpenAI Studio Playground .

We’re most excited about the new customer experiences that can be enhanced with GPT-4o mini, particularly streaming scenarios such as assistants, code interpreter, and retrieval which will benefit from this model’s capabilities. For instance, we observed the incredible speed while testing GPT-4o mini on GitHub Copilot, an AI pair programmer that assists you by delivering code completion suggestions in the tiny pauses between keystrokes, rapidly updating recommendations with each new character typed.

We are also announcing updates to Azure OpenAI Service , including extending safety by default for GPT-4o mini, expanded data residency, and worldwide pay-as-you-go availability, plus performance upgrades.

Azure AI brings safety by default to GPT-4o mini

Safety continues to be paramount to the productive use and trust that we and our customers expect.

We’re pleased to confirm that our Azure AI Content Safety features—including prompt shields and protected material detection— are now ‘on by default’ for you to use with GPT-4o mini on Azure OpenAI Service.

We have invested in improving the throughput and speed of the Azure AI Content Safety capabilities—including the introduction of an asynchronous filter —so you can maximize the advancements in model speed while not compromising safety. Azure AI Content Safety is already supporting developers across industries to safeguard their generative AI applications, including game development ( Unity ), tax filing ( H&R Block ), and education ( South Australia Department for Education ).

In addition, our Customer Copyright Commitment will apply to GPT-4o mini, giving peace of mind that Microsoft will defend customers against third-party intellectual property claims for output content.

Azure AI now offers data residency for all 27 regions

From day one, Azure OpenAI Service has been covered by Azure’s data residency commitments .

Azure AI gives customers both flexibility and control over where their data is stored and where their data is processed, offering a complete data residency solution that helps customers meet their unique compliance requirements. We also provide choice over the hosting structure that meets business, application, and compliance requirements. Regional pay-as-you-go and Provisioned Throughput Units (PTUs) offer control over both data processing and data storage.

We’re excited to share that Azure OpenAI Service is now available in 27 regions including Spain, which launched earlier this month as our ninth region in Europe.

Azure AI announces global pay-as-you-go with the highest throughput limits for GPT-4o mini

GPT-4o mini is now available using our global pay-as-you-go deployment at 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens, which is significantly cheaper than previous frontier models.

We are pleased to announce that the global pay-as-you-go deployment option is generally available this month, allowing customers to pay for the resources they consume, making it flexible for variable workloads, while traffic is routed globally to provide higher throughput, and still offering control over where data resides at rest.

Additionally, we recognize that one of the challenges customers face with new models is not being able to upgrade between model versions in the same region as their existing deployments. Now, with global pay-as-you-go deployments, customers will be able to upgrade from existing models to the latest models.

Global pay-as-you-go offers customers the highest possible scale, offering 15M tokens per minute (TPM) throughput for GPT-4o mini and 30M TPM throughput for GPT-4o. Azure OpenAI Service offers GPT-4o mini with 99.99% availability and the same industry leading speed as our partner OpenAI.

Azure AI offers leading performance and flexibility for GPT-4o mini

Azure AI is continuing to invest in driving efficiencies for AI workloads across Azure OpenAI Service.

GPT-4o mini comes to Azure AI with availability on our Batch service this month. Batch delivers high throughput jobs with a 24-hour turnaround at a 50% discount rate by using off-peak capacity. This is only possible because Microsoft runs on Azure AI, which allows us to make off-peak capacity available to customers.

We are also releasing fine-tuning for GPT-4o mini this month which allows customers to further customize the model for your specific use case and scenario to deliver exceptional value and quality at unprecedented speeds. Following our update last month to switch to token based billing for training , we’ve reduced the hosting charges by up to 43%. Paired with our low price for inferencing, this makes Azure OpenAI Service fine-tuned deployments the most cost-effective offering for customers with production workloads.

With more than 53,000 customers turning to Azure AI to deliver breakthrough experiences at impressive scale, we’re excited to see the innovation from companies like Vodafone (customer agent solution), the University of Sydney (AI assistants), and GigXR (AI virtual patients). More than 50% of the Fortune 500 are building their applications with Azure OpenAI Service.

We can’t wait to see what our customers do with GPT-4o mini on Azure AI !

Retail warehouses tend to have a similar hectic pulse, with workers using forklifts to shuttle items from point A to point B. But UPS’ Velocity warehouse near Louisville, Kentucky, was designed for e-commerce. And it is oddly quiet.

“So we have a little over 700 robots,” said Thomas Stearman, Velocity’s director of industrial engineering, “and the robots work 24 hours a day.”

There are more robots than human workers at the 900,000-square-foot Velocity facility, which opened last winter. This warehouse isn’t just for processing orders and shipping them out. It stores inventory, straight from the manufacturer — though the word “storage” is used lightly here. Most retailers who use this warehouse turn over their inventory every few months.

“We want to process volume. We don’t want this facility to be a storage facility,” said Stearman. “We want items coming in to be turning.”

One- and two-day shipping, made ubiquitous by Amazon, has put pressure on nearly every other retailer to match it . Meanwhile, the sheer growth of e-commerce — sales have nearly quadrupled over the last decade according to the Census Bureau — has put pressure on retailers and shipping companies to streamline logistics in an effort to shave minutes off the process.

Because UPS’ retail customers at Velocity sell mostly online, they want to move fast to capitalize on trends and get products out quickly. There are five brands stored at this warehouse, with one prominently displayed during the tour. “There’s one that is our largest customer and one of our fastest growing brands,” said Stearman. “Marketplace” can’t name the brand because of its agreement with UPS. All we can say is it’s a newish clothing company that focuses on undergarments and loungewear.

Being newish means the brand is still learning how to be nimble. That’s one of the trickiest parts of shipping logistics. You have to be ready to capitalize on that late-night buyer who needs (or wants) something tomorrow. For next-day delivery via air shipment, Velocity can accept orders until 11 p.m.

Let’s take a second to recognize how totally normal this has become — that you can, phone glowing in the dark, from the comfort of your bed, buy a vegetable spiralizer as late as 10:59 p.m. and be eating zucchini noodles for dinner the very next day.

Here’s what happens after you click “buy” and go to bed: At UPS, it triggers immediate motion. If it’s a popular item, it’s probably already staged in a priority area for stuff that’s expected to sell fast. This requires UPS and its retailers to do a little forecasting. “Let’s say, if you’re having a sale coming up, well, [we’ll ask] what items are going to be included on that sale, so we’re ready as soon as those orders do hit,” said Stearman. With one-day shipping, every minute counts. UPS can’t afford to waltz to the deepest depths of its warehouse, one item at a time, and expect to get it across the country in 24 hours. So if a product goes viral and gets more clicks, the stock inches closer to the front of the warehouse, eventually joining a sea of blue crates full of all kinds of trending products. Stearman calls this a dance floor.

“We actually thought about installing a giant disco ball over it,” he said. This is where the robots live. They look like those Roomba vacuums, but maybe four times the size — big, flat discs scooting under towering stacks of blue bins. The robots whisk them over to packing stations on the other side of the dance floor.

“And we like to call it that because they’ll actually spin as well, and it looks like they’re dancing,” said Stearman. The robots move non-stop, constantly reprioritizing crates of stuff as UPS’ computers pull in more data about what’s selling. After the orders are picked, humans take over. They’re the ones who pack, tape and label the boxes.

“We’ve got some things to make it easier,” said Stearman. “But it still requires that human touch to be able to really get that out the door for us.”

Out the door of this warehouse isn’t the end of the journey though. Many packages are headed for the airport, just 15 minutes up the highway, for a one-way flight out tonight.
