Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project

Will Tom Cruise film his next movie in space? In July 2020, Cruise, director Doug Liman, and writer Christopher McQuarrie teamed with Universal to make the first narrative film to be shot in space. SpaceX's Crew Dragon plans to fly Cruise to NASA's International Space Station, where Axiom Space and Space Entertainment Enterprise plan to add new ISS modules, including a space station movie studio that intends to launch by December 2024. Plot details and cast have yet to be announced, but who do you want to see join Tom Cruise in space?

UK company behind Tom Cruise space film unveils plans to launch space movie studio

Introducing see-1, reportedly coming in 2024.

An animation of the SEE-1 module attached to Axiom’s space station on the ISS.

On Thursday, a UK-based company that claims to be producing Tom Cruise’s upcoming film in space said it plans to attach the first-ever space movie studio and sports arena to the International Space Station as early as 2024.

Called Space Entertainment Enterprise, or S.E.E., the company also announced it is working with commercial space station builder Axiom Space, which has its own partnership with NASA to build and attach an experimental space station to the ISS. That station is called Axiom Station, and Axiom hopes to launch its first module, called Axiom Hub 1, to the ISS by 2024. The company will then build out the space station before eventually separating it from the ISS in 2028 and making it a free-flying vehicle.

S.E.E. plans to attach its own module to the new growing space station in December of 2024

But while Axiom Station is attached to the ISS, S.E.E. plans to attach its own module to the growing space station in December of 2024. Dubbed SEE-1, the module will be available to individuals who want to film or live stream content in space, “including films, television, music, and sports events,” according to a press release announcing the news. Animated videos and images of SEE-1 on the company’s website show the module as a giant white sphere, though there were no available designs of what the interior will look like.

Though the module will belong to S.E.E., it is being built by Axiom Space. According to the S.E.E. press release, it will be an inflatable module that will stretch up to 6 meters, or nearly 20 feet, in diameter. S.E.E. says that it will allow third parties to also use the studio for their own projects. No costs or estimated budgets were provided for the project, nor did S.E.E. detail how much it would charge others to use the studio.

“Adding a dedicated entertainment venue to Axiom Station’s commercial capabilities in the form of SEE-1 will expand the station’s utility as a platform for a global user base and highlight the range of opportunities the new space economy offers,” Michael Suffredini, Axiom’s CEO, said in a statement.

S.E.E. also revealed itself to be the production company behind Tom Cruise’s mystery space movie

With today’s announcement, S.E.E. also revealed itself to be the production company behind Tom Cruise’s mystery space movie. In 2020, NASA announced that it was working with the famous actor to potentially send him to the International Space Station to film a project. The actor’s ride to space is reportedly SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule, which is used to ferry NASA astronauts to and from the ISS.

Later, NASA confirmed in a podcast that Axiom was going to be involved in getting Tom Cruise to orbit . While Axiom builds space stations, it has also contracted with NASA and SpaceX to buy rides on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon to send private individuals to the ISS. Axiom’s first private astronaut mission on a Crew Dragon, called Axiom-1, is scheduled to take flight in March . However, there’s no set date or confirmation for Tom Cruise’s flight. As for what Cruise plans to film up in the cosmos, all that’s been reported so far is that director Doug Liman is involved and that the film will not be a Mission: Impossible movie.

S.E.E. was co-founded by producers Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky. Their company boasts an impressive list of consultants of former Viacom and HBO executives. The company says it’s currently looking for investors on the Tom Cruise space project, which Deadline reported in 2020 would have a budget of at least $200 million.

However, it’s possible the budget could be even higher, given how much going to space costs. Just one seat on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon is thought to run around $55 million , plus NASA charges additional fees for private astronauts using the space station’s facilities while in orbit. S.E.E. says it plans to conduct a fundraising round soon.

Everything to Know About Tom Cruise’s New Movie Set in Actual Space

US actor Tom Cruise attends a press conference for the film 'Top Gun: Maverick'

CGI won’t be necessary when it comes to Tom Cruise’s newest project. The actor has fought aliens in robot suits, traveled to the depths of the galaxy, and has flown numerous types of planes and jets, all with the help of movie magic. But when it comes to the space walk he’s set to take for his new film with director Doug Liman, the plan is this time for it to be the real deal.

Universal Pictures is backing Cruise and Liman’s new movie, which plans to film at least some scene in actual space. Donna Langley, the chairman of Universal told the BBC that the hope is for Cruise to head up in a rocket to the International Space Station and from there, to be “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”

To help with that goal, Liman and Universal have enlisted both SpaceX and NASA. Liman also reportedly has a budget of around $200 million, according to Variety . Cruise, apparently, is said to be getting anywhere from $30 to $60 million for his role as the star and producer of the film.

Cruise and Liman originally pitched the film, which doesn’t yet have a name, to Langley during the pandemic over Zoom. Langley clarified that the majority of the movie will actually take place on earth. Cruise will play “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth” and he will eventually have to “go up to space to save the day.” As of now, there isn’t much more information on the plot of the movie, or the timeline for its filming.

Tom Cruise Is Making a Movie in Space With SpaceX and NASA

Scientologist Tom Cruise in a tuxedo

Greetings, earthlings. Welcome to another edition of The Monitor , WIRED’s entertainment news roundup. This time around we have news about a Labyrinth sequel (nearly 35 years later, but we’ll take it), a new pandemic-ready movie that was shot on an iPhone, and Tom Cruise's plans to film in space. Here, let us explain.

As you might recall, a few weeks ago we told you about some rumors flying around Hollywood suggesting that Tom Cruise wanted to shoot a movie in space with the help of NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX . Turns out, there was something to them after all. Per a report on Deadline , director Doug Liman, who directed Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow , is on board to helm a new action film that will enlist the help of NASA and SpaceX for at least some of the filming.

Little is known about the plot, but Deadline’s report notes that Liman wrote the first draft of the script and Cruise is a producer on the film. Given the current pandemic and the training Cruise and others will likely have to go through, there’s no telling exactly when the film could start production, but it looks like this one might actually happen. Let’s see if we can get #SendTomCruiseToSpace trending.

Speaking of surprising news, Labyrinth is getting a sequel. Deadline is reporting that Scott Derrickson will direct the follow-up to the 1986 Jim Henson classic. The movie, which has the backing of the Jim Henson Company, will be written by Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed the “My Valentine” installment of Hulu’s Into the Dark . Derrickson recently stepped away from the sequel to his Marvel film Doctor Strange over creative differences.

If there’s one movie that encompasses Right Now, it might be IWeirDo . The rom-com and debut feature from Taiwan’s Liao Ming-Yi was filmed entirely using an iPhone XS and features two soulmates—a girl who is a germophobe and a guy who is almost constantly washing his hands. Oh, also you’ll be able to watch its premiere online due to the coronavirus . The film is opening the Far East Film Festival , which typically takes place in Udine, Italy, but this year is happening online as that country continues to deal with Covid-19. The festival will take place June 26 to July 4, and IWeirDo will premiere on Italian site MyMovies .

Will Tom Cruise perform a spacewalk while shooting film on space station?

Cruise reteams with "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman for a possible trip into space

Oblivion

Anyone who has ever seen Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise hanging off jet airplanes, scaling skyscrapers, or zooming through traffic on a motorcycle in countless action blockbusters knows he's truly a man without fear.

But his signature daredevil DNA doing his own insane stunts might be put to the test for one of his next film projects as he experiences a zero-gravity spacewalk that could jangle his steadfast nerves in unimaginable ways.

Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, wants to send international leading man Tom Cruise up into Earth orbit for a space-based action thriller that was originally pitched to her back in 2020 by Cruise and director Doug Liman.

Per the BBC , the basic story outline begins on terra firma , with the " Top Gun: Maverick " star then ascending into the heavens via a rocket to the International Space Station where the down-on-his-luck character's arc requires him to complete a dangerous spacewalk to save the planet.

Video: Tom Cruise talks space with NASA astronaut Victor Glover

According to a BBC News interview, this movie is still in the development stages but if it does get a green light by Universal, Cruise will add the distinction of being "the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station" to his storied career.

Edge of Tomorrow

Cruise, who narrated the 2002 IMAX documentary "Space Station 3D," has ventured into the realm of science fiction several times in his lifetime, the most notable titles being director Cameron Crowe’s "Vanilla Sky," "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds" for director Steven Spielberg, "Oblivion," directed by "Top Gun: Maverick's" Joseph Kosinski, and "Edge of Tomorrow" on which he worked with Liman, the same filmmaker who boldly proposed sending Cruise up into space.

Tom Cruise plans to film a movie in space — and could be the first civilian to do a spacewalk

By Li Cohen

October 11, 2022 / 11:57 AM EDT / CBS News

Tom Cruise's next mission could make history. If the plans for an upcoming film come through, he would fly to space to film the moment where he helps save the planet.

Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Film Entertainment Group, told the BBC in an interview last week that the 60-year-old "Mission Impossible" and "Top Gun" actor will be "taking the world to space."

"That's the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him doing just that," she said, "taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station."

She said the film request came from Cruise directly and that he is in close collaboration with director Doug Liman, who previously worked with Cruise in 2014's "Edge of Tomorrow" and is also known for "The Bourne Identity" franchise, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and "Jumper."

"During the pandemic, he asked for a Zoom call with us and got onto the call and said, 'Guys, I have this great project and here it is,'" Langley recalled in the interview.

The title and details of the film have not been announced, but Langley said the majority of the story will take place on Earth before Cruise's character "needs to go up to space to save the day."

01see.png

The project was first confirmed in 2020 by NASA's then-director Jim Bridenstine. Deadline reported at that time that Elon Musk's SpaceX was also going to collaborate on the film.

Space Entertainment Enterprise announced in January this year that it would work with Axiom Space to build a content and entertainment studio and "multi-purpose arena" space station module. The venture, called SEE-1, is planned to launch in late 2024 and would be connected to the Axiom Station, a commercial module planned for the International Space Station.

Last year, Russian actress Julia Peresild and filmmaker Klim Shipenko  spent 12 days aboard the International Space Station working on the first feature film shot in space , with Peresild playing s a doctor making an emergency house call in orbit.

Tom Cruise is officially going to space for his next movie

It's out of this world.

tom cruise

Plans for Tom Cruise’s outer space film with Elon Musk have been finalised, with the trip now scheduled for 2021.

The pioneering movie was announced earlier this year , confirming that Cruise had teamed up with Musk and NASA to film a new movie in outer space, set to be directed by Edge of Tomorrow ‘s Doug Liman.

NASA confirmed their involvement in the project earlier this year via Twitter , where NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted: “NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station!

“We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”

The film, still untitled, was pitched to Universal via an “exuberant Zoom call” with Cruise, Liman, Christopher McQuarrie and PJ van Sandwijk.

Liman is in the process of writing the film’s script, and the budget is estimated to be around $200 million. McQuarrie, who is the writer/director on the  Mission: Impossible  films, will act as story advisor and producer, alongside Cruise, Liman and van Sandwijk as producers.

Tom Cruise will next be starring in  Mission: Impossible 7 , still filming after a number of coronavirus-lated delays, and will be promoting  Top Gun: Maverick which is set for release on December 23 after being pushed back from this summer.

One small step for Tom Cruise , one giant leap for moviemaking?

Cruise is partnering with NASA to shoot a movie, at least in part, aboard the Intl. Space Station, NASA has confirmed, the first narrative feature to be shot in space.

“NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station,” NASA administrator Jim Bridentsine tweeted on Tuesday. “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”

Deadline Hollywood first reported Monday night that Cruise and Elon Musk’s SpaceX were in the early stages of teaming up with NASA for an action-adventure feature film that would be shot in outer space. Plot details have not been revealed, although Deadline reports that it will not be an installment of Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” franchise.

It’s unclear how Cruise will pull off this feat, but, even at 57, he’s insisted on doing his own stunts, including a freefall at 200 mph in 2018’s “Mission: Impossible — Fallout.”

Cruise’s next film is “ Top Gun: Maverick ,” in which he reprises his role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a test pilot and flight instructor. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Paramount has moved “Top Gun: Maverick” off its July 12 release date to Dec. 23, 2020.

Remember Tom Cruise's Space Movie? We Finally Have Some New Details

It’s about time we got an update!

Tom Cruise as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise will be keeping movie fans entertained in the coming years with Top Gun: Maverick , Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 , but let’s not forget that he’ll also be leaving Earth at some point to provide us with cinematic entertainment. Back in 2020, it was reported that Cruise was teaming with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Doug Liman and Christopher McQuarrie for a movie that will be shot in outer space . It’s been a while since we’ve received any updates on the project, but now we finally have some new details to take in.

Starting off, Universal Pictures is reportedly intending to begin production on this untitled space movie sometime next year, and the studio is waiting for director Doug Liman to deliver the script he’s co-writing with Christopher McQuarrie . The studio is specifically expecting the space movie to be what Cruise tackles next after he and McQuarrie finish shooting Mission: Impossible 8 , which began production not long after Mission: Impossible 7 wrapped up filming in September .

Variety also mentioned in its report that this Universal Pictures feature will only be “partially shot” on the International Space Station, with most of the footage being shot on Earth and some also being obtained on a rocket. Furthermore, rather than being a sci-fi movie, this project is described as an “action-adventure story” that sees Tom Cruise playing a “down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth.”

So now we have a bit of a clearer picture on what to expect from Tom Cruise’s space movie, both with production plans and finally having a basic premise. Unfortunately, Cruise and the gang lost the big screen space race last year , as footage was shot on the International Space Station for a Russian film called The Challenge last October. However, with Cruise’s space outing being a Hollywood production, you can be sure that it’ll rank among the more widely-viewed new movie releases .

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie go way back to when the latter started leading the charge in the Mission: Impossible film series starting with Rogue Nation , and the actor previously worked with Doug Liman on Edge of Tomorrow . While it would have been understandable if either of these men had to exit this space-set project due to scheduling conflicts or other reasons, as of now, they’re still guiding it along. Funny enough, when Cruise, McQuarrie and Liman pitched the space movie to Universal, they didn’t even have a draft of the script , but the studio was impressed enough to pour $200 million into the project .

Hopefully we won’t have to wait a long time again to learn more about Tom Cruise’s space movie, but whenever major updates do arrive, CinemaBlend will pass the along. In the meantime, Cruise can next be seen in Top Gun : Maverick starting May 27, while Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 were recently pushed back to July 14, 2023 and June 28, 2024, respectively.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA is rolling out the International Space Station’s red carpet for Tom Cruise to make a movie in orbit.

The space agency’s administrator, Jim Bridenstine, said before Wednesday’s planned launch of two NASA astronauts aboard a SpaceX rocket that Elon Musk’s company is already getting customers eager to blast off.

Cruise is one of them.

Bridenstine said he’ll leaving it to Cruise and SpaceX to provide the mission details.

“I will tell you this: NASA has been in talks with Tom Cruise and, of course, his team, and we will do everything we can to make it a successful mission, including opening up the International Space Station,” he told The Associated Press.

Asked about Cruise filming on the space station, Musk told “CBS This Morning,” “Actually, I think that remains to be seen. We are supportive and I think NASA is supportive of anything that captures the imagination of the public.”

Bridenstine said the whole reason NASA created “this commercial marketplace” is so SpaceX, Boeing and other private companies can attract customers besides the U.S. government. That will drive down costs to American taxpayers, he said, and increase access to space for all types of people — celebrities included.

“I don’t admit this very often ... but I was inspired to become a Navy pilot because when I was in elementary school, I watched the movie ‘Top Gun,’” the 44-year-old Bridenstine said.

Cruise starred as Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 1986 film. A sequel is due out later this year.

”The question is, ‘Can Tom Cruise make a new movie that inspires the next generation Elon Musk.’ And if he can do that, then we’re all for it. NASA is all in,” Bridenstine said.

A message to Cruise’s representative was not immediately returned.

On a enfin des nouvelles du film de Tom Cruise dans l’espace

La présidente de Paramount donne des nouvelles de son ambitieux projet avec Tom Cruise. Comment avancent les choses pour le voyage dans l’espace de l’acteur ?

Tom Cruise Top Gun Maverick

NASA is helping Tom Cruise film a movie in space

The international space station could play a role in movie history..

NASA’s current desire to commercialize space has seemingly reached its logical conclusion. Administrator Jim Bridenstine has confirmed a Deadline report that NASA is working with Tom Cruise on a movie to be shot aboard the International Space Station. Yes, it should be the first fictional movie shot in space — not just aboard a low-gravity “vomit comet” flight. Bridenstine didn’t share details of the movie, but the earlier leak claimed that it wasn’t a Mission: Impossible movie.

That same report said SpaceX was involved, although it might not have much choice. NASA is determined to fly Americans to space from US soil, and that means using capsules like Crew Dragon in the near term.

The title is reportedly in the very early stages, with no studio involved and no release window. SpaceX doesn’t expect to offer tourist flights aboard Crew Dragon until the second half of 2021 at the earliest.

It’s not shocking that both sides would be eager to work with each other. Cruise is well-known for doing as many of his own stunts as possible, often at high risk. It doesn’t get much more authentic than shooting a space-themed movie in orbit. NASA, meanwhile, has many incentives to team up with the actor. As TechCrunch explained , it’s not just about Bridenstine’s aim to “inspire a new generation of scientists.” This could help NASA turn the ISS into a place of business, and Cruise’s movie could serve as a marketing tool to attract more companies.

Tom cruise's wish to film first movie in space gets beaten by russia.

Superstar Tom Cruise's dreams of becoming the first to make a film in space have been dashed as Russia sends a movie project into orbit.

Tom Cruise loses the race to be the first to film in space as Russia announces they’re sending a movie crew into orbit. Cruise is well-known for performing Earth-bound movie stunts, pulling off numerous death-defying feats in his Mission: Impossible films.

The fearless Cruise indeed upped the ante on his own stuntwork again during shooting for the upcoming Mission: Impossible 7 . For his latest feat, Cruise drove a dirtbike off a cliff with help from a ramp and BASE jumped from the plunging vehicle, performing the same stunt six times in order to get it right. But such gravity-dictated stunts aren’t enough for Cruise as he has been planning the next logical step in his progression: filming a movie in space. In September 2020, it was indeed announced that Cruise and director Doug Liman had booked a flight on a SpaceX rocket headed for the ISS in October, 2021. Not to be outdone, Russia soon revealed that they had designs on beating Cruise to space and were recruiting an actress to participate in the ultimate moviemaking adventure.

Unfortunately for Cruise it appears he has indeed lost this new space race between himself and the nation of Russia. As reported by Collider , the Russian film  The Challenge from director Klim Shipenko is headed to space ahead of Cruise, with plans to liftoff as early as October 5, 2021. The movie’s production crew has reportedly been preparing for a year at Moscow’s Yuri Gagarin Center for Cosmonaut Training and recently received approval for their flight. The film will shoot for 12 days in orbit.

While Russia prepares to make history by sending a film crew into space, the status of Cruise’s own space project appears up in the air. For starters, there has as yet been no confirmation of reports that Universal was prepared to pay $200 million to make Cruise’s space dream a reality. And there also have been no recent updates about the actor’s supposed SpaceX trip in October. Cruise indeed just recently finished shooting Mission: Impossible 7 after multiple delays, so who knows if he’s even ready for his planned ride into space. Civilian space travel is of course becoming much more of a reality these days after highly-publicized flights by billionaires Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson, as well as the recent first-ever launch of an all-civilian crew into orbit by SpaceX.

Knowing the tenacious Cruise he will one-way-or-another make his space dream a reality before it’s over. But unfortunately it seems he’s lost the race to make history by becoming the first to shoot a film beyond the confines of planet Earth. The good news for everyone though is that it seems a barrier is about to be broken when it comes to shooting footage in orbit, which should only result in more such productions getting the go-ahead to launch. Movie fans can only be happy about the idea of more-and-more realistic space films being made in actual zero-gravity conditions, with or without Cruise.

'Mission: Impossible 8': Release Date, Cast, Filming, and Everything We Know So Far

Ethan Hunt's next mission is currently on hold.

Quick Links

Does 'mission: impossible 8' have a release date, will 'mission: impossible 8' be in theaters, who is returning for 'mission: impossible 8', who are the new cast members in 'mission: impossible 8', what will 'mission: impossible 8' be about, who is making 'mission: impossible 8', when and where did 'mission: impossible 8' film.

Editor's Note: The following contains full spoilers for 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning' Fans of the Mission: Impossible franchise have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Ethan Hunt's story in Mission: Impossible 8 .

It's honestly amazing that the Mission: Impossible series has been able to up the ante with every installment since the original 1996 film. Each installment somehow ends up being more exciting than the last and adds its own flavor of action spectacle to keep the franchise fresh and exciting. With a solid foundation formed by Mission: Impossible 1996, we got high-speed motorcycle chases in Mission: Impossible II , a terrifying villain in Mission: Impossible III , a Burj Khalifa-scaling triumph in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol , a stealthy espionage treat in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation , and a gripping nuclear prevention tale in Mission: Impossible - Fallout .

Ethan Hunt's latest mission, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning , might be the best installment in the long-running series yet. In a surprisingly topical tale about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence, Ethan and his team are tasked with finding and destroying a rogue AI known only as The Entity. The resulting globe-trotting journey leads to some incredible action setpieces and more than a few shocking twists and turns.

While the second half of the epic search for The Entity undoubtedly makes Mission: Impossible 8 one of the most anticipated projects of 2025, although moviegoers will have to wait a bit longer than expected for Ethan Hunt's next mission. To learn more about the second part's cast, release date, production status, and more, here is everything we know so far about Mission: Impossible 8 (queue fuse-lighting sequence).

Editor's Note: This piece was updated on April 24, 2024.

Mission: Impossible 8

Mission: Impossible 8 is set to release on Friday, May 25, 2025 . The film has gone through numerous delays, having previously been scheduled for release on August 5, 2022, November 4, 2022, July 7, 2023, and June 28, 2024.

While the initial two delays were because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused both Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning to constantly be delayed as well, the latest setback was because filming had been halted by the SAG-AFTRA strike .

There's a reason why Tom Cruise's catchphrase of "See you at the movies" has become so prevalent. With Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible franchise being such massive box office hits, you better believe that Mission: Impossible 8 will be premiering exclusively in a movie theater near you. After the previous movie lost its IMAX screens after one week due to Oppenheimer , Mission: Impossible 8 will be receiving a three-week IMAX exclusive releas e.

After the film's theatrical run concludes, Mission: Impossible 8 will more than likely be joining the rest of the franchise entries on Paramount+ for a streaming release.

If, by chance, you still haven't seen Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning , you can stream the movie on Paramount+.

Watch on Paramount+

Unsurprisingly, global action superstar Tom Cruise will once again be reprising his role as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt. The actor's world-famous tenacity for doing his own stunts has made him one of modern cinema's most famous figures. Also set to return to assist Ethan in his quest for The Entity are Captain America: The First Avenger standout Hayley Atwell as Grace, Hot Fuzz star Simon Pegg as Benji, and Pulp Fiction icon Ving Rhames as Luther. Also on the cast list is Doctor Sleep star Rebecca Ferguson as the fan favorite Ilsa Faust, but given how her character's story goes in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning , that may not be the case (unless there is a flashback sequence or Ilsa's death was a fakeout).

Other characters expected to return are the antagonists of the film, such as Essai Morales ( La Bamba ) as Gabriel, Vanessa Kirby ( Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw ) as The White Queen, and Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ) as Paris , the latter of whom may return as a redeemed ally after barely surviving her wounds in Part 1 . Also likely returning are Part 1 's deuteragonists, including Shea Whigham 's ( Kong: Skull Island ) CIA agent Jasper Briggs, Greg Tarzan Davis ( Top Gun: Maverick ) as CIA agent Degas, Charles Parnell ( Top Gun: Maverick ) as NRO, and Henry Czerny ( Clear and Present Danger ), reprising the character of Kittridge, who debuted all the way back in the first Mission: Impossible . Kittridge isn't the only familiar face from a past film returning this time either, as Rolf Saxon ( Tomorrow Never Dies ) is reprising his role as William Donloe - another character who hasn't been seen since the first film. Also likely returning in flashbacks is Mariela Garriga ( NCIS ) as Marie - the mysterious woman from Ethan's past who Gabriel killed.

The returning cast is already massive, but even more new faces are joining the second chapter. This includes Emmy Award-Winner Nick Offerman ( The Last of Us ) as Sydney, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Holt McCallany (Mindhunter) as Bernstein, the Secretary of Defense. Also joining the cast in undisclosed roles are Emmy-Award Winner Hannah Waddingham ( Ted Lasso ), Academy Award nominee Janet McTeer ( The Menu ), Lucy Tulugarjuk , Katy O'Brian ( Love Lies Bleeding ), and Tramell Tillman ( Severance ).

While an official plot synopsis has not yet been released, Mission: Impossible 8 will almost certainly be continuing Ethan Hunt's search for The Entity, even though the world's governments and other third parties are trying to stop him. Ethan is also likely seeking retribution against Gabriel, who has now murdered two people very close to him. It's an epic conclusion that will likely see Ethan bring along old friends and potentially meet new enemies.

The film was initially set to be titled Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two , but this is now subject to change. Only time will tell if Paramount decides to remove the "Part One" from the seventh installment.

Much of the behind-the-camera crew from Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning will be returning for Mission: Impossible 8 . This includes writer/director Christopher McQuarrie , who has become a franchise veteran after directing Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible - Fallout prior to the Dead Reckoning films. McQuarrie also shares screenwriting credit with Band of Brothers scribe Erik Jendresen .

Also attached to return are composer Lorne Balfe ( Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ), cinematographer Fraser Taggart ( Robot Overlords ), editor Eddie Hamilton ( Top Gun: Maverick ), and production designer Gary Freeman ( The Witches ).

In an interview with Collider, McQuarrie revealed that most of Part 2 has already been completed , but there are still some major set pieces that have not been filmed yet. However, production was not able to be completed before the initiation of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming has since picked back up, and photos from the set made their way online in late March 2024 .

Suri Cruise celebrates her 18th birthday in rainy NYC as estranged dad Tom works in London

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Suri Cruise was photographed celebrating her 18th birthday in New York City while her estranged father, Tom Cruise, worked abroad in London.

According to pictures obtained by Page Six, the birthday girl stepped out in the rainy weather with a friend on Thursday. The pals chatted as Suri held a pink umbrella over their heads.

The teen, who is also the daughter of Katie Holmes, wore jeans, a denim jacket over a brown shirt and black shoes. She carried a blue backpack and held what looked like a birthday gift in her hand.

A day before Suri’s big day, her father, Tom, was spotted overseas in London filming a new project.

The “Mission Impossible” star, 61, flashed a wide grin as he arrived at a helipad and piloted a jet.

Tom and his youngest daughter have not had a close relationship over the past years. In fact, a source exclusively told Page Six earlier this month that the movie star has not seen Suri since 2012 (they were last seen together at Disney World that summer).

“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” the insider told us. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Holmes, who filed for divorce from Tom when Suri was only 6 years old in June 2012, previously told Glamour that she wanted to keep her daughter out of the public eye “because she was so visible at a young age.”

The 45-year-old also revealed in November 2013 court docs that she filed for divorce from Tom “to protect Suri from Scientology ,” a religion that is often referred to as a cult.

While it is believed that Holmes signed several non-disclosure agreements to prevent her from speaking about her marriage to Tom and the Church of Scientology, Suri will be free to discuss the religion and her father now that she is legally an adult.

Though it’s unclear whether the teen will publicly speak about her father, she won’t be joining Scientology anytime soon.

“Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be … she deserves love and sympathy,” former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder told Page Six.

‘I learn a lot every single time I work’ … actor and director Bryce Dallas Howard

Bryce Dallas Howard: ‘I can’t be trusted around famous people’

The actor on tricking her tear ducts, being entertained as a child by Tom Cruise and legging it from dinosaurs while wearing stilettos

Hi Bryce! If two generations makes an acting family, does three make an acting dynasty? [Her father is director Ron Howard, both of whose parents were actors.] JohnHunt I think a dynasty is five generations or more, so we’re not even close. We’ve got a way to go. We’ve got three generations, so maybe I’ll be around for it when the Howards cross that threshold.

When you’re directing something that’s part of a larger collection, such as The Mandalorian , how do you find the balance between maintaining the tone and making something that reflects your own artistic vision? porcospino Something like The Mandalorian is such an important story and piece of intellectual property. It’s dramaturgically essential to understand the essence of the creator and what inspired them to create that in the first place, so whatever I’m building on is an extension of their original vision. In the case of Star Wars, it’s George Lucas, but I would feel that way no matter what the material is. It’s very important to have a deep, nuanced, compassionate and objective view when you take the baton.

Howard as Elly and Sam Rockwell as Aidan in Argylle

What was it like making Argylle with such a stellar cast? Do you ever get star struck? TurangaLeela2 It’s a completely bananas movie, and that’s what the experience was like making it with this dazzling cast, Versace gowns and doing the whirlybird with Sam Rockwell, Sam [Samuel L] Jackson and Dua Lipa. I get starstruck extremely easily and it’s embarrassing. I blush, I stutter, I say weird things. I get like too excited. I act like a fangirl and it takes a while for me to settle down. I can’t be trusted around famous people is the takeaway.

How did you learn that crying on command thing you demonstrated on the Conan talkshow? MrChevett I taught myself. I heard that there was an acting technique based on the physiology of the human body and triggering certain physiological cues that would then cause you to laugh, blush, yawn, cry. I read the death scene of Romeo and Juliet every single night before bed, starting when I was 14 years old, and I would yawn because, when you yawn, your eyes get watery. I would yawn while saying the text, and got to a point where I could yawn without having the yawn response and could just talk and trigger my soft palate, which would trigger my tear ducts, which would cause tears. I’m doing it right now. I’m yawning inside but I’ve learned how to talk while yawning and trigger my soft palate and tear ducts. See. Now there’s a little tear that’s coming down.

Your performance in Black Mirror was the best I’ve ever seen an actor playing opposite a smartphone! littleisok Thank you. That episode was just so chilling for me personally because I had just joined social media two weeks prior. I was a late adopter, so when we filmed that in 2016 I was in the throes of thinking: “What have I done to my life?” Then I read that script and thought: “Wow, this is going to be very therapeutic.”

You were impressive as Elton John’s mother, Sheila, in Rocketman . How did you manage the accent? Hooplehead1967 I had a wonderful dialect coach who helped me because Sheila is from Pinner [in north-west London] but she’s trying to seem like she’s very posh, so it’s more of a posh dialect than you’d probably find typically in Pinner. I’m glad that I’m not banned from England now! Do I think it’s easier for British actors to do American accents than the other way around? It’s probably because – and I’m about to make some terrible generalisation here – British actors are incredibly well trained, and there’s such an exposure to American media.

Do I have any favourite British slang? I know I have to be careful when asking for my fanny pack. It’s bumbag. And bangs and fringe. I used to always have bangs and I would say: “I’m just blow drying my bangs. Hold on one second. I mean, fringe …”

Bryce Dallas Howard as Sheila in Rocketman

Do you think your acting has improved because of your work as a director? Have you become a better director because of your acting experience? Or does it go hand-in-hand? BMater I learn a lot every time I work as either a director or an actor. My dad says that one of the things he misses most about being an actor is getting to watch other directors work because everyone does it a little bit differently. It’s what I love most about acting as well. With directing, I love working with really talented actors and finding ways to make them feel exceptionally empowered to do their best work. Both scenarios are fun and enlightening as it pertains to the other role.

Do you have any interest in performing on Broadway again? jdsasser Yes. Now that my kids are getting older, that’s definitely something that I’ve been thinking about.

If you had to replace the Dallas in your name for another city, which would you pick? Ellis1997 There are some good ones. My niece is named Aspen, which is good. I grew up in Connecticut where there’s a place called Mystic, so Mystic Connecticut could be fun. Or Bryce Hollywood Howard!

What was Tom Cruise like as a babysitter? TopTramp He wasn’t my babysitter. He just was in a movie [1992’s Far and Away] directed by my dad. My siblings and I were quite young at the time, so he was just a big kid who was really fun and would entertain us with backflips and feed us whatever we asked for. He was always really cool.

Bryce Dallas Howard with Chris Pratt in 2015’s Jurassic World

Are high heels really the best shoes to wear when running away from a T rex [in Jurassic World]? dude1981 Actually, I had the choice to take off my shoes. In the scene, I push up my sleeves and there was going to potentially be a bit where I threw off my high heels, but just being out there in the jungle terrain, I thought: “I’ll do better in heels.”

Have you ever experienced any ginger-ism in your career or personal life? TopTramp That’s the first time I’ve ever heard that term! Apparently, we’re going extinct, and I’ve contributed to it. Neither of my children are redheads. I went to the Louvre over my birthday weekend in March, and walked around and almost every single painting was of a redhead. So we’ve ruled long enough!

“The right man for the right role”: Keanu Reeves Replaces Tom Cruise in The Mummy Fanmade Trailer and It Certainly Looks Promising

T he world fell in love with Keanu Reeves ever since he portrayed the role of Jack Traven in the iconic 1994 film  Speed.  Going on to  The Matrix  franchise, Reeves solidified his career in Hollywood with millions of fans to his name.

In a recent fan-made trailer, Reeves replaced Tom Cruise in  The Mummy  franchise. With shots from various Keanu Reeves movies and  The Mummy,  the trailer sure looks good. But more importantly, Reeves could turn out to be the actor who could replace Tom Cruise in  The Mummy  franchise for the Dark Universe!

Keanu Reeves Might Just Be The Perfect Man To Replace Tom Cruise!

Taking to YouTube, a fanmade trailer for a sequel to the 2017 movie  The Mummy  was released by KH Studio . With shots from the 2017 film with cuts of Keanu Reeves in between, the trailer surely looks good compared to other fanmade trailers.

With Universal Studios trying to create a Dark Universe with horrors from beyond, it seems that Keanu Reeves may be able to save their film. Having some iconic shots of Reeves from films like the  John Wick  franchise, the trailer managed to mix  The Mummy  and Reeves well together. Taking to the comment section of the video, here’s what people had to say about the  Speed  actor potentially replacing Tom Cruise in  The Mummy !

“It was, like, better than an Oscar”: Tom Cruise Broke His 1 Weird Rule for The Mummy Co-Star and She’ll Be Forever Grateful for Years to Come

“The right man for the the right role for me!!” “John wick taking on super natural forces” “You know it will be good with Reeves in it” “Love this concept for a movie!”

10 Times Movie Critics Were Horribly Wrong: Even Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy Was Not Safe From Awful Reviews

Well, as much as we would love to see a mishmash of Constantine, Indiana Jones, John Wick, and, Lara Croft taking on a supernatural mummy, the trailer is just fanmade. On the other hand, Reeves has so many movies to his name that he decided to reject roles (and with good reason too). In an interview, Reeves talked about letting go of  Speed 2: Cruise Control  and the hilarious reason for which he said no!

Why Keanu Reeves Rejected  Speed 2: Cruise Control ?

Back in 1994, Reeves and Sandra Bullock portrayed the lead roles of Jack Traven and Annie Porter in the iconic film  Speed.  Since the movie was a success, a sequel was naturally developed but this time, the bomb would be on a cruise ship.

During his appearance on  Jimmy Kimmel Live  (via  Den of Geek ), Reeves revealed that he had to drop out of the project for two reasons. The second reason is simply too hilarious to drop out of a movie!

“You are a national treasure”: Keanu Reeves’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Role Was Probably Foreshadowed Way Back and Now Fans Have Only 1 Demand

“I loved working with Jan de Bont and Sandra, of course. It was just a situation in life where I got the script and I read the script and I was like ugggghhh.”

He further continued,

“It was about a cruise ship and I was thinking, a bus, a cruise ship… Speed, bus, but then a cruise ship is even slower than a bus and I was like, I love you guys but I just can’t do it.”

“It was slightly out of context”: Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix Flawlessly Uses the Trans Allegory Because it Wasn’t Forced and Lilly Wachowski Agrees

Well, luckily the decision worked out in favor of Reeves since he got to be a part of  The Matrix  while  Speed 2: Cruise Control  became a massive failure. As of April 2023, Keanu Reeves , Sandra Bullock, and director Jan de Bont have expressed their interest in returning for a Speed  sequel with the original cast returning.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise’s 2017 film, The Mummy (which was considered an average film) is available to rent on Apple TV+ in the U.S.

Gerald Ensley: World War II film reminds Tallahasseeans of a past great

(This column was first published in the Tallahassee Democrat on Jan. 11, 2009.)

The plot to assassinate Hitler - the subject of the 2008 Tom Cruise movie, "Valkyrie" - has a Tallahassee connection.

Actually, there were more than a dozen plots to kill Hitler during World War II. And the movie opens with the second most-nearly successful: an attempt to detonate a bomb aboard Hitler's plane. Though not mentioned in the movie, one of the co-conspirators of that plot was Hungarian attorney Hans von Dohnanyi.

Von Dohnanyi (DOCK-non-ye) was the son of world-famous Hungarian pianist and composer Ernst von Dohnanyi - and that's the Tallahassee connection.

Ernst von Dohnanyi spent the last 11 years of his life in Tallahassee and is buried at Roselawn Cemetery. He taught at Florida State University from 1949 until his death in 1960 and helped kick-start the reputation of FSU's internationally famous music school.

FSU's main recital hall is named for Dohnanyi, as he is simply known. In 2002, FSU held a symposium in his memory that drew musicians from around the world.

And his fame continues to grow. More than a dozen biographies have been written about him, including a recent one in Germany about Ernst, Hans and Hans' two sons, Christoph and Klaus. Christoph is the conductor emeritus of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra; Klaus was the mayor of Hamburg, Germany. Both have visited Tallahassee several times.

And Dohnanyi's music is still wildly popular: A foot-high stack of CDs of his compositions performed by modern artists sits on a counter at Dohnanyi's former home at 568 Beverly Court. The home belongs to Sean McGlynn, a local water quality researcher, who is Dohnanyi's grandson by his third wife.

"He was a great composer, and he's being re-discovered," McGlynn said. "His music is very lyrical but also difficult to play. He was a musician's musician, and (modern musicians) are challenged by his work."

McGlynn, who is married and has four children, has lived in the house since 1980 and owned it since his grandmother died in 1986. It remains an informal Dohnanyi museum. Closets are filled with photos and scrapbooks. Cabinets are filled with Dohnanyi's notes and compositions. His books, clocks, art objects and furniture dot the house.

The composer's piano is the centerpiece of the front room - and a shrine to visitors.

"We hosted a reception during the (2002) symposium," McGlynn said. "And all the pianists had to play it."

McGlynn has donated many of his grandfather's letters, notes, compositions plus 150 tapes Dohnanyi recorded at home to FSU. He has donated hundreds of papers to museums in Hungary and England. He has provided photos for a half-dozen recent books. He hopes eventually to donate all his grandfather's memorabilia to museums.

"I feel very lucky to have all this heritage," McGlynn said. "(But) it's the kind of stuff scholars drool over."

McGlynn was a favorite of his grandfather, who wanted him named Ernst (it became McGlynn's middle name) and affectionately called the toddler, "my little Irish terrorist."

Though only 5 when his grandfather died, McGlynn has memories of playing in the backyard with his grandfather and listening to him play the piano. McGlynn plays the piano, the French horn and the bagpipes - but can't match his grandfather's musicianship.

"I grew up with all these stories and around all this talent. I hoped I had it, too," McGlynn said. "It has been frustrating to learn these gifts don't come along that often."

Dohnanyi, born in 1877, was a prodigy. As a teenager visiting Vienna, he met the famous composer Johannes Brahms, who played a composition Dohnanyi wrote - and immediately pronounced, "You are going to be a great composer."

Dohnanyi composed two symphonies and thousands of musical pieces. He was conductor of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra and gave concerts around the world. He mentored famous musicians, including his eventual colleague at FSU, the late Edward Kilenyi. Dohnanyi had a prodigious talent and photographic memory.

"He could look at the sheet music for five minutes, then conduct an entire symphony," McGlynn said. "One of his concert tricks was to ask someone to call out a Beethoven sonata, and he'd play it from memory."

As a member of the Hungarian parliament, Dohnanyi opposed the Russian Communist takeover after World War II. The Russians tried to label him a war criminal and Nazi collaborator, so he sought refuge in other countries. After stints in Austria and Argentina, he wound up in the U.S., and eventually at FSU.

He was revered at FSU, where he conducted orchestras, gave concerts and continued to compose. One of his favorite students was Joanne Byrd, who rented one of two basement apartments at the Dohnanyi home - and was already engaged to her future husband: Fred Rogers, who went on to become TV's beloved Mister Rogers.

"We were not even aware of all (the political intrigue) that had gone on in his life. We just knew Dr. Dohnanyi was a great, great person," said Hilda Starbuck, a retired Leon County music teacher who graduated from FSU in 1952. "From time to time, he would give a little talk about his childhood. Whenever he told us the story (about meeting Brahms), I would get goosebumps."

A favorite son

Hans von Dohnanyi was arrested and executed for his role in the plot to kill Hitler. Time vindicated him, and in 2002 Germany issued a stamp in his honor.

But his father would have cried watching "Valkyrie." Dohnanyi was married three times and had seven children. But Hans was his first-born from his first wife.

"Hans was his favorite child; their marriage never recovered," McGlynn said. "His death was devastating to my grandfather."
