Star Trek (1966)

The Lights of Zetar

  • A mysterious, twinkling mass of sapient energy ravages an important archive and Scotty's new girlfriend may be linked to it.
  • The Enterprise is on course to install new equipment on Memory Alpha, the central library storage facility for the Federation. Chief Engineer Scott has been working closely on the project with Lieutenant Mira Romaine with whom he has been forming a romantic attachment. The Enterprise encounters a space storm that kills the staff at Memory Alpha and possesses Lieutenant Mira Romaine. — laird-3
  • On its way to the planetoid Memory Alpha (an unshielded, open-to-all Federation central library storage facility), the Enterprise faces a strange, unnatural phenomenon, which appears as a storm but attacks the crew's brains, impairing motor functions selectively. Spock finds that these "lights" are the life force of ten intelligent aliens (remnants of a civilization from the dead planet Zetar). Only Lieutenant Mira Romaine - for whom Cdr. Scott has a fawning interest - is deeply and lastingly affected, with visions that seem precognitive but which are indicative of something far worse. — KGF Vissers
  • En route to Memory Alpha, a massive Federation library designed to hold all the knowledge of its member worlds, the Enterprise comes across an entity of twinkling lights that is impervious to the ship's weapons and can move faster than the speed of light. For Lt. Mira Romaine, it's her first deep space voyage, but she has the support of Lt. Cdr. Scott, who has fallen very much in love with the lass. When they first encounter the new being, Mira's body is invaded, and it soon becomes clear that the entity has no intention of releasing her. The challenge for Kirk and Spock is to find a way to rid them of this being, but the only method available may also kill her. — garykmcd
  • En route to Memory Alpha, a massive Federation library designed to hold all the knowledge of its member worlds, the Enterprise comes across an entity of twinkling lights that is impervious to the ship's weapons and can move faster than the speed of light. As the entity engulfs the Enterprise, each member of the crew is effected, Kirk cant speak, Chekov cant see, Uhura cant move and so on. For Lt. Mira Romaine (Jan Shutan), it's her first deep space voyage (and she is the expert to oversee the transition of Enterprise data-banks into the library computers), but she has the support of Lt. Cdr. Scott, who has fallen very much in love with the lass. When they first encounter the new being, Mira's body is invaded, and it soon becomes clear that the entity has no intention of releasing her. Mira is irritable after her encounter with the entity. Sulu, meanwhile, plots the course for the entity and finds that it will go through memory alpha. Uhura cant make any contact with memory alpha and the mini-planet has no protective shield. The entity goes through memory alpha just before Enterprise reaches its orbit. Spock, Kirk, McCoy and Scott beam down to investigate. The memory banks are burnt out and the entire crew at the planetoid is dead. Only one woman has survived and she makes the same garbled sounds made by Lt Romaine after she was invaded by the entity. She dies shortly thereafter due to collapse of her nervous system. Other crew died as each had a different portion of the brain destroyed by the entity. Romaine tells Kirk that the entity is returning to kill them, and sure enough it is on its way back to memory Alpha. Kirk beams back to the Enterprise, but ROmaine is stuck in transit, whom Scott recovers after operating the transporter himself. Kirk orders the Enterprise to leave. The entity follows the Enterprise. Spock determines that the entity carries 10 life forms as a community. Kirk tries to communicate with the entity and says contact is fatal to humans, but the entity does not relent. Kirk fires phasers, and that results in an injury to ROmaine. Scott tells Kirk that another phaser attack will kill Romaine. Kirk brings Romaine into the briefing room. Spock determines that Romaine's current brain waves are exactly the same of the entity. The entity engulfs the Enterprise again and this time they are able to control ROmaine. Kirk speaks to the entity via romaine and figures that the entity is the life force of the last 100 inhabitants of Zetar (a planet which was destroyed eons ago). The entity is looking for a body to live out its life and after a long search, it has found Romaine. Kirk reminds the entity that it is killing people, but the entity says that resisting them kills the people. Kirk shoves Romaine into a pressure chamber and increases pressure on the entity. The theory is that the entity has gotten used to a weightless environment and cannot handle pressure. Sure enough, the entity escapes Romaine's body as the pressure is build up. Romaine survives and Kirk returns to Memory alpha to rebuild the library.
