The Inverted Design

Inverted forks simply work better. By inverting the fork so that the lighter stanchions are on the bottom, we reduce the mass of the moving part of the fork so that it will react quicker and easier to the trail. Inverting also anchors the stanchions into the stronger, larger upper tubes and crown-making the overall chassis much stronger and stiffer. Inverting lowers the fulcrum point where the uppers join the stanchions, compared to other fork designs, decreasing the leverage factor. Inverting also positions the seals downward so that all kinds of bad stuff doesn’t sit on them and get pulled into your fork. A strong, stiff, quickly moving fork is especially important for fat bikes where the size and weight of the tires put increased pressure on the fork.

Keyed Stanchions

Keyed Stanchions  keep Wren suspension forks running true and prevent the stanchions from twisting. The 43mm beefy uppers are channeled to accept brass keys that fit our oversize 36mm stanchions. The keys perfectly align the stanchions in the uppers and are designed to shear should you take a really big hit. This protects the channels and your fork from damage.  The fork will still function and the keys are easily replaced.

Review: Wren V5PF Play-Fi Speaker

Mike Giffin, the silver-tongued CEO of Wren Sound Systems , is an audio journeyman. For about 35 years, he has worked in the high-end audio segment, partly as a division president at Harman International. He speaks with a radio-friendly cadence and a rich tonal quality, almost like the products he creates. After more than three decades making speakers and home audio components, he has hit a home run.

The Wren V5PF ($400) is the Android-enabled version of Wren's V5AP speaker designed for iOS devices. Unlike that model, which relies on the sometimes sketchy AirPlay wireless streaming technology, the new Wren uses DTS Play-Fi . This is the same technology inside the Phorus Play-Fi wireless speaker system speaker I reviewed recently.

There's one major difference between AirPlay and Play-Fi, outside of the iOS versus Android debate. AirPlay works most of the time, but in my tests, it can flake out when someone else in your home is downloading a new game demo on an Xbox 360, streaming a movie to a laptop, and generally consuming a chunk of your wireless bandwidth. Play-Fi, on the other hand, worked amazingly well when I first encountered it in the Phorus speakers, even though I wasn't a big fan of the speaker quality itself.

The Wren V5PF is the best of both worlds. The speaker, available in bamboo or rosewood, has the chops to produce a rich (but not overwhelming) bass, warm midtones, and pristine highs. And Play-Fi maintains a clean, consistent signal even when there's congestion on the network. In some ways, it's like having a quality-of-service (QoS) engine inside your music collection, apart from whatever QoS you run on your router.

The slim speaker, which weighs just 6.6 pounds, has an understated design that looks like another piece of furniture inside your home. There's no handle to carry it around; it's meant to stay put in your living room or by the bed. It is also not battery powered, you plug it in. The speaker enclosure measures about 16-inch across, 4 inches deep, and 6 inches tall. It's curved – Wren uses a medium-density fiberboard that's not only pliable, but tends to vibrate less than the injected-molded plastic used on other speakers. This improves the overall sound and adds a depth to the low end. The bass hits a low point of 60Hz (lower is better) instead of the 80Hz typical of these mid-sized speakers.

Now, you can easily get a "big sound" with a big cabinet, or you can use powerful drivers inside a smaller speaker box to accomplish a similar goal, which is the path Wren takes. Inside the speaker are four drivers – a pair of three-inch, long-throw speakers with four-layer voice coils that push most of the sound out, and two 19-mm tweeters spaced as far apart as possible. The arrangement provides just enough power and richness to fill a room, but not overwhelm it.

Unlike so many wireless speakers on the market, the Wren V5PF does not support Bluetooth – only Wi-Fi streaming. Wren will be adding a Bluetooth speaker to its lineup soon.

So, about that DTS Play-Fi. I tested the Wren V5PF with about six different Android gadgets. On a Motorola RAZR HD, I installed the Wren app and was playing my locally stored music in just a few seconds. The speaker showed up on my Wi-Fi network almost immediately. (You can also play music using a 3.5mm aux input, but there is no way to play music over USB.)

The app can stream from a network storage drive, and I had no problems selecting and using a Seagate BlackArmor drive on my wireless LAN. I streamed an entire album by the quirky techno band Baths without any glitches. Next, I streamed a Dustin Kensrue radio station for about two hours using the Pandora service built into the Wren app. You can also play Internet radio stations from within the app.

OK, so full confession here: When I tested my brand new Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone with the speaker, the Wren app suffered an epic fail – crashes, glitches, and so on. Wren worked out the bugs and released a new app, and after updating, I had no problems. The version of the Wren app I tested (version 1.0.1.061) also has a feature to "force takeover" the speaker. That means, whoever tries to connect to the speaker with their Android device will be able to. This is not something you can configure (or block), but that could show up in a later version.

I also tried a Kindle Fire HD, a Samsung Galaxy S3, and an HTC One smartphone and had no problems. My Play-Fi stream stayed pure. The sound quality never dipped into that distortion-laden Bluetooth category where it's so annoying you'd rather just play music on a home stereo. (The AptX audio codec for newer Bluetooth devices is already making progress toward changing that impression, though.)

Apparently, the sound designers listened to a ton of Jimmy Eat World when creating the Wren speaker, and that's a good thing. Mainstream artists with plenty of bass and drums, but without too much subtle orchestration, sounded better on the Wren than the $250 Sony BTX500 speaker I reviewed recently, and a hair better than the Logitech's $250 UE Boombox . Other speakers at the same price as the Wren, like the $400 Klipsch KMC 3 , have more bass, but the Wren sounded warmer for mainstream music, with a pleasing soundstage.

Things get more interesting when listening to more refined music. On something a little loud and chaotic, like the song "Exit Wound" by the band Mixhell, the Wren made an intro siren sound realistic, as opposed to the whiz toy you'll hear on lesser speakers. You might even look out the window trying to spot the accident. On the song "Chase Lights" by All Tiny Creatures (a band famous for working with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver), the bells in the intro have a resonance that makes them seem like they're sitting right next to you.

One slight ding: the Wren didn't exactly pass my Iceage test. This punk band from Denmark probably never imagined they'd end up being my measuring rod for wireless speakers. But on their song "Ecstasy," there's a slight cymbal tapping in the intro that you can hear a little more clearly (more realistically) on other wireless speakers. To really appreciate Iceage's dynamics, you need a really great system with a pair of floor-standing speakers.

In the end, in test after test, I ended up liking the Wren's audio reproduction the best compared to other wireless speakers in the $400 price range. Play-Fi streamed accurately with no problems, and the app just worked. Maybe your ears will hear something different (and let me know in comments), but for the music I tested, the Wren is my top pick overall for wireless speakers that use Wi-Fi. That is, for now.

Wren V5PF Review

As the technology behind wireless speakers improves, most of the focus is shifting toward smaller, ultra-portable models. While this may be true for the bulk of manufacturers, it isn’t true for everyone. While Sonos might currently be the most recognizable brand, there is fairly large group focusing on wireless in-home audio, rather than speakers that can easily fit inside a backpack.

Wren is one of these companies, and their V5 series comes in a few different models aimed at owners of various devices: an Airplay model, a DTS Play-Fi model, and a more recently released Bluetooth model. We’re looking at the Play-Fi model, the Wren V5PF. While the connectivity differs, the sound and build remains the same across all of the various models.

What’s In The Box?

The Wren V5PF is one of the largest speakers we’ve reviewed, so it was no surprise that the box is a fairly large one. Open it up and the first thing you’ll see is the speaker. Underneath you’ll find the AC adapter and power cable, mini USB cable, micro USB cable, and the Setup guide.

Build & Design

While sleek, rounded and futuristic are all words that describe a large percentage of modern wireless speakers, Wren takes a different approach with the V5PF. Instead, the speaker takes its design cues from high-end home stereo equipment, complete with a wood finish — available in either rosewood or natural bamboo. The silvery cloth on the front of the speaker provides a nice contrast to the wood.

As mentioned earlier, the speaker is fairly large, measuring 4.2 x 16.7 x 6.2 inches. It isn’t light either, weighing in at 6.6 pounds. Considering this isn’t a speaker meant to be carried around, the size and weight aren’t a problem, but it’s worth doing some measuring if you don’t have a lot of space and you’re thinking about buying the V5PF. Luckily, the rubberized bottom will keep the speaker from easily sliding off of a table or desktop.

Connectivity

Play-Fi isn’t nearly as common as Bluetooth, but luckily you don’t have to worry much about hardware compatibility. Adding Play-Fi to your phone or computer is as simple as downloading an app. Plug the speaker in and turn it on, and it immediately becomes visible to any Play-Fi enables devices on your wi-fi network.

While enabling Play-Fi is simple, playing the music of your choice may be trickier. Playing local music on a mobile device is simple, but I wasn’t able to use Spotify on either an iPhone or Android phone. If this is a big deal to you, it might be worth looking into the Airplay or Bluetooth versions of the speaker. From a PC, on the other hand, the DTS Play-Fi app allowed me to play any audio from the computer to the speaker.

While it was fun to push the volume slider up on the computer in my office and hear the speaker get louder in my kitchen, this isn’t ideal, so it’s nice that the Wren V5PF features a few buttons on the side / front. Starting from the top, you’ll find the power button, volume buttons (plus and minus) and finally the source button, which allows you to switch between Play-Fi and the 3.5 mm aux jack on the back of the speaker.

Sound Quality

Testing was done playing music of various genres and styles from a Windows PC as well as both an iPhone and an Android phone. Right now, Play-Fi is limited to CD quality (16 bit, 44.1 kHz) sound, but that is still at least technically better than Bluetooth’s lossy transmission.

Bass response is impressive for the size, and notes are well represented. While many speakers “fake” the low end, here the size works to the Wren’s advantage. A word of advice: the V5PF features a bass port in the back, so for maximum bass, place it near a wall.

The mids provide plenty of room for guitars and vocals. Response doesn’t sound totally flat, with a cut between 500 and 1000 Hz (likely to avoid muddiness) and another in the higher mids (presumably to avoid harshness).

Detail is fairly good in the high end, but it’s clear that they’re playing it safe. There is a bit of softness in the high end at times, but this is certainly preferable to harsh, tinny high end.

While it might be larger than most speakers we review, the Wren still isn’t large enough to provide a wide stereo field, though soundstage is fairly good and it certainly can fill a room. Unlike most of the speakers we look at, we noticed no audible breakup on most songs as we cranked the volume — in fact, in most cases it seems that the V5PF sounds at its very best when cranked up.

One of our favorite large-format wireless speakers of 2014 was the Bose SoundLink 3, and in terms of sound quality and ease of use, the Wren V5PF beats it handily. If you need portability, this obviously isn’t the best choice, but if you’re looking for a speaker that will sit on your shelf, the Wren is one of the best sounding speakers we’ve heard. Just be sure that you choose the right model for you.

• To connect a device (phone, laptop, tablet, or other) to the speaker, start with the speaker turned off, then long press to turn it on. The speaker will enter pairing mode automatically, as indicated by a flashing blue light.
• Turn on wireless pairing on your device and search for the speaker, which will appear as “Wren Tokay” on the list of available connections. Select this, and when the connection Is successful, the flashing blue light will turn solid and a tone will sound.
• Note: The speaker will automatically connect to the last paired device (if available and within range).
• You can also connect a device to the speaker via the included Aux cable. Open the port cover and connect one end of the cable to the port labeled “AUX IN,” then connect the other end to your device. Press M to cycle through Input modes.
• In addition, the speaker will also play certain audio files (such as .MP3) from a TF or microSO card. Open the port cover and insert a TF or microSO card into the slot labeled “TF.” Press M to cycle through input modes.
• If you have two Tokay speakers, you can enable TWS (True Wireless Stereo) mode to sync their output.
• Start with both speakers powered off and within range of each other. Make sure that your device is also within range and that wireless pairing on the device is turned off.
• Turn on both speakers simultaneously. Each one should now show a flashing blue light. -On one of the speakers, long press M to start the TWS connection process. From here on, consider this speaker the “Master.” The Master speaker should now flash both yellow and blue lights simultaneously, while the other speaker (the “Helper”) should continue flashing blue.
• When the Master and the Helper are connected, you will hear a tone. The light on the Helper should now he solid yellow, while the light on the Master should he solid yellow with flashing blue.
• Now turn on wireless pairing on your device and select “Wren Tokay.” If you have previously used your device with the Master, it may pair automatically. When this pairing is successful, you will hear a second tone. The Master should now show both a solid yellow and solid blue light simultaneously, while the Helper will show a solid yellow light. You are now ready to play in TWS Mode.
• Note: For subsequent uses of TWS Mode, the speakers should connect to each other automatically when powered on simultaneously.

Indications

Applies to TREK™ RX & OTW 2.25 mm – 5.00 mm sizes only: The TREK™ RX & OTW Coronary Dilatation Catheters are indicated for:

• Balloon dilatation of the stenotic portion of a coronary artery or bypass graft stenosis, for the purpose of improving myocardial perfusion
• Balloon dilatation of a coronary artery occlusion, for the purpose of restoring coronary flow in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction
• Balloon dilatation of a stent after implantation

Applies to MINI TREK™ RX and MINI TREK™ II OTW 1.50 mm – 2.00 mm sizes only: The TREK™ RX & OTW Coronary Dilatation Catheters are indicated for:

• Balloon dilatation of a stent after implantation (balloon model 2.0 mm only)
• Balloon dilatation of de novo chronic total coronary occlusions (CTO)

Applies to MINI TREK™ RX and MINI TREK™ II OTW 1.20 mm sizes only: The MINI TREK™ RX & MINI TREK™ II OTW 1.20mm Coronary Dilatation Catheters are indicated for:

• Initial balloon dilatation of the stenotic portion of a coronary artery or bypass graft stenosis (≥ 70% stenosis).

Note:  (applies to 2.00 mm to 5.00 mm only): Post-deployment stent expansion testing was performed on the bench with the MULTILINK VISION™ and MULTI-LINK ULTRA™ stents. All stents should be deployed in accordance with the manufacturer’s indications and instructions for use.

Contraindications (applies to all sizes)

The TREK™ RX & OTW, MINI TREK™ RX and MINI TREK™ II OTW Coronary Dilatation Catheters are not intended to be used to treat patients with:

• An unprotected left main coronary artery
• A coronary artery spasm in the absence of a significant stenosis

Warnings (applies to all sizes)

This device is intended for one time use only. DO NOT resterilize and / or reuse it, as this can compromise device performance and increase the risk of cross contamination due to inappropriate reprocessing.

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) should only be performed at hospitals where emergency coronary artery bypass graft surgery can be quickly performed in the event of a potentially injurious or lifethreatening complication.

PTCA in patients who are not acceptable candidates for coronary artery bypass graft surgery requires careful consideration, including possible hemodynamic support during PTCA, as treatment of this patient population carries special risk.

Use only the recommended balloon inflation medium. Never use air or any gaseous medium to inflate the balloon.

Balloon pressure should not exceed the rated burst pressure (RBP). The RBP is based on results of  in vitro  testing. At least 99.9% of the balloons (with a 95% confidence) will not burst at or below their RBP. Use of a pressuremonitoring device is recommended to prevent over pressurization.

To reduce the potential for vessel damage, the inflated diameter of the balloon should approximate the diameter of the vessel just proximal and distal to the stenosis.

When the catheter is exposed to the vascular system, it should be manipulated while under high quality fluoroscopic observation.

Do not advance or retract the catheter unless the balloon is fully deflated under vacuum. If resistance is met during manipulation, determine the cause of the resistance before proceeding.

Do not use, or attempt to straighten, a catheter if the shaft has become bent or kinked; this may result in the shaft breaking. Instead, prepare a new catheter.

Do not torque the catheter more than one (1) full turn.

Treatment of moderately or heavily calcified lesions is considered to be moderate risk, with an expected success rate of 60 – 85% and increases the risk of acute closure, vessel trauma, balloon burst, balloon entrapment, and associated complications. If resistance is felt, determine the cause before proceeding. Continuing to advance or retract the catheter while under resistance may result in damage to the vessels and / or damage / separation of the catheter.

In the event of catheter damage / separation, recovery of any portion should be performed based on physician determination of individual patient condition and appropriate retrieval protocol.

Precautions (applies to all sizes)

Note the “Use by” date specified on the package.

Inspect all product prior to use. Do not use if the package is open or damaged.

This device should be used only by physicians trained in angiography and PTCA, and / or percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA).

Prior to angioplasty, the dilatation catheter should be examined to verify functionality and ensure that its size is suitable for the specific procedure for which it is to be used.

During the procedure, appropriate anticoagulant and coronary vasodilator therapy must be provided to the patient as needed. Anticoagulant therapy should be continued for a period of time to be determined by the physician after the procedure.

If the surface of the TREK™ RX & OTW, MINI TREK™ RX or MINI TREK™ II OTW Coronary Dilatation Catheter becomes dry, wetting with heparinized normal saline will reactivate the coating.

Do not reinsert the TREK™ RX & OTW, MINI TREK™ RX or MINI TREK™ II OTW Coronary Dilatation Catheter into the coil dispenser after procedural use.

The safety and effectiveness of this PTCA balloon catheter for the treatment of in-stent restenosis (ISR) have not been established.

Applies to TREK™ RX and MINI TREK™ RX only (APPLIES TO ALL SIZES), in addition to above:

The design and construction of these catheters do not provide the user with distal pressure monitoring capability.

Applies to TREK™ RX 4.50mm and 5.00mm sizes only, in addition to above:

With 4.5 mm and 5.0 mm balloon dilatation catheters, some increased resistance may be noted upon insertion or withdrawal into or out of the guiding catheter. Choosing a larger guiding catheter size may minimize this.

Applies to TREK™ OTW and MINI TREK™ II OTW (APPLIES TO ALL SIZES), in addition to above:

Bench testing was conducted with 0.014” (.36mm) constant diameter guide wires to establish guide wire compatibility. If another type of guide wire is selected with a different dimensional profile, the compatibility (e.g., wire resistance) should be considered prior to use.

Adverse Events (applies to all sizes)

Possible adverse effects include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Acute myocardial infarction
• Arrhythmias, including ventricular
• Arteriovenous fistula
• Coronary artery spasm
• Coronary vessel dissection, perforation, rupture, or injury
• Drug reactions, allergic reaction to contrast medium
• Hemorrhage or hematoma
• Hypo / hypertension
• Restenosis of the dilated vessel
• Total occlusion of the coronary artery or bypass graft
• Unstable angina
