It's Easy to Speed Up Chrome With These 6 Methods
I'm finally leaving google chrome, and these are the 4 reasons why, 7 bits of tech you think you need, but you'll never use.
While it's fine to write down all the places you plan to visit on your next trip, plotting your itinerary on a map can help you optimize your routes, coordinate with your travel buddies, and navigate in real time.
Fortunately, mapping your itinerary is now easier than ever with these travel planning apps.
1 Scout (Web): Best Travel Planner for Cities With Detailed Map
When you're planning a trip to a new city, either alone or as a group, you will usually list many places you want to visit. With Scout, you can add these in different sections and see them on a live map, thus making it easier to figure out which places are within close distance and create an itinerary.
When you start a new trip in Scout, you'll first have to pick a city you're visiting and set your arrival and departure dates. By default, you get sections for attractions, food, and accommodations. But you can always add more custom sections. Each section gets its colored pin marker (for example, all food places will show as blue pins). You can add a place by searching for it or typing the full address. It's powered by Google Maps, so it'll be easy to find any place.
Once you've added the points of interest, open the itinerary view to see your dates. Drag-and-drop places from the first bar to any day's itinerary. Once you add multiple places to a day, the map will automatically create a route for that day, linking all the places. You can rearrange them to find the best route to take.
You can also share your Scout trip with others so that they can add their own points of interest and update the itinerary to create a group plan. It's also a helpful way to get tips from locals, as they'll be able to add recommendations directly to your map.
Scout also lets you publish your map or itinerary to its directory so others can discover your helpful recommendations. And, of course, you can browse the directory to find what others have recommended.
2 Wanderlog (Web, iOS, Android): Comprehensive Travel Planning App With Map
Wanderlog is a feature-rich app for creating detailed itineraries. You can start planning a trip by selecting a destination, choosing dates, and inviting friends.
Once you've created a trip, Wanderlog will show you various places to visit in your selected city. You can add these to your trip or search for more places. Likewise, you can add a section for restaurants or other activities and color code all these places.
If you want to note down any details, Wanderlog provides an option to create notes and checklists, so you won't need a separate note-taking app for your trip.
Wanderlog lets you create a day-wise itinerary as well. You can add places manually or let Wanderlog autofill your day. There's a separate travel-planning chatbot within Wanderlog to help you plan a perfect trip.
The map on the right side of the screen shows all the places you've added to your trip, along with route lines/directions. If you've subscribed to Wanderlog Pro, it can even optimize your route and export the map to Google Maps.
Moreover, Wanderlog has an expense tracker that keeps a log of all your expenditures and can split the costs between your travel partners . Within Wanderlog, you can save details about your flights, lodgings, rental cars, or other reservations.

3 Sygic Maps (Web, iOS, Android): Maps Made for Travelers
Made specifically for travelers, Sygic Maps can help you plan your perfect trip. Powered by OpenStreetMap, it highlights restaurants, markets, parks, cinemas, and other tourist attractions around you.
To create a trip, you'll have to create an account and sign in. Click the profile icon in the top right corner and select My Trips > Plan a new trip . Select the destination, dates, and your trip name.
Once you've created your trip, you can add places to your itinerary. Either search for the sites you want to visit and add them to your trip, or explore Sygic Maps to find and save tourist spots. Based on your selected destinations, Sygic Maps will show a route and traveling time. You can rearrange places to optimize your route and set the time you'll spend at each place.
Sygic Maps also lets you invite participants and share the trip itinerary. If you are willing to pay for Sygic Premium, you can download offline maps on the mobile app and export your trips.
Though it doesn't offer as many features as Wanderlog, Sygic Maps is a great option if you're looking for a simple, intuitive app to plot your itinerary on a map.

4 Travel Mapper (Web): Google Sheets Travel Itinerary With Live Map
When planning the itinerary for your next trip, you usually want to visualize it on Google Maps, too. Travel Mapper is a custom Google Sheets template that lets you create your travel itinerary, share it with friends, and instantly add the locations to Google Maps.
Travel Mapper is simple to use. Once you download the add-on, open a new Google Sheet and go to Extensions > Travel Mapper > Start Here > Generate Template . Add the date, time, activity, location, links, costs, and any additional notes in the sheet. The sidebar shows the Google Map for your itinerary, which you can update when you make any changes.
The map is customizable. You can add color codes for different elements and filter activities to see your map differently. The Google Maps in the sidebar can also be used to discover other places of interest near any location. It's one of the best Google Maps hacks for travel trips .
Travel Mapper also includes a to-do list, a packing checklist, and a favorites list to ensure you don't forget anything. You can also share your newly created sheet with friends, who can add their own locations to the map.
5 Plip (Web, Android, iOS): Mobile-First Collaborative Trip Planner With Maps
Plip is a mobile-first travel planning app that you can use to plan your entire trip on your phone or tablet. It also has a web app for use on your laptop.
Register for an account once you create a new trip; otherwise, your travels won't be saved. You can keep the trip private or share it with a group by adding others' emails.
When you want to add a new entry, there are eight types of plans to choose from: plan (generic), flight, reservation, lodging, restaurant, event, vehicle rental, and transit. The default details to fill for any entry are the title, the location, the start and end date and time, and any notes if necessary. Certain plans have additional entries, like "Provider" in events or "Confirmation number" in lodgings.
You can quickly filter your entries by the type of plan to view them in a list. Otherwise, switch to the Map view to view all your places of interest marked on the map and scroll through a pane at the bottom.
Download: Plip for Android | iOS (Free)
These apps will help you plan your entire trip, giving you a clear idea of when and where you will be. But don't rush to book everything.
The travel and hospitality industry offers many last-minute deals on flights, hotels, and tourist attractions. You should try to check different travel apps to save money and take advantage of the deals where you can.

Are you dreaming of creating your own interactive travel map to bring your tours and adventures to life? With Map My Travels, it's easy! Craft and share custom maps of your travels, embedding them seamlessly on your website. Start mapping your journeys and share them with the world today!
Creating a travel map has never been easier
Combine an intuitive travel map creator with many customization options like uploading your own marker icons as well as loading in GPS files. Creating an interactive travel map has never been easier.
Create custom markers
One of the key features of Map My Travels is to customize the way you want to show waypoints on your travel map. That's why you can add markers to your map in multiple ways:
Add content to your travel map
A map marker without information is not a good marker! People want to know what happened at that specific place. That's why you can easily add a popup to your markers and routes, where you can add the following pieces of content:
Fill your travel map with content!
Embed the travel map on your own website
You can share your map in many different ways. You can share a link to the map on social media or where ever you like. You can also embed the map on your own website, like I've done on my personal website! It doesn't matter if your website is made with Wordpress, Squarespace or any other.
Upload GPS files
Upload your recorded travel data with ease. In the Map My Travels editor you can upload GPS files in the following formats:
After you've added the GPS files you can still change the line's appearance, like color, thickness, opacity etc.
Import your Strava Activities
If you host your travel activities on Strava, a popular fitness app on which you can share your traveled routes (usually used by hikers or cyclists), you can import these directly into the map creator!
If you don't have any recorded route data like from Strava or a GPS file, you can still add lines to your map by just drawing on the map!
Change the look of your travel map
You can customize the look of your map with 4 different map types that Google Maps provides:
Create as many travel maps as you want!
You can add as many travel maps in your account as you want, completely free! There are only limits on the amount of markers and routes you can add to your maps. But you can get started for absolutely free. See more information on pricing and limits on the pricing page.
Create travel maps on any device
All of the map creator features are totally compatible with both laptops and phones. Out of personal experience, I'd recommend editing the maps on a laptop or computer. The experience is a bit better for panning around the map, but it's totally possible to do it on a phone as well. Your travel map will look beautiful either way!

The Best Maps For Tracking Travel this Year
Our list features the top-rated maps for tracking travel around the world. We highlight various styles – at a range of price points – so that every traveler can find the best World Map Travel Tracker to suit their style and stoke their wanderlust!
Push Pin World Map to Track Travels
We think a Push Pin Travel Map is one of the best ways to track trips. With a World Map with pins, travelers can accurately mark the places they have been by pinning the marker on a specific city or region.
A pinnable world map also allows for personal variations. For instance, pins for the tracker map can be color-coded by trip, to designate the difference between past and future travels or to mark bucket list destinations.
Almost every world push-pin travel map comes with a set of pins included to mark the visited countries, cities or places. However, there are a variety of travel push pins – for example, ones with flags – that can be purchased separately to better enhance the Track Your Travels Map.
Framed Push Pin World Map for Travelers
Of all the pinnable map options, we think a Framed World Map with Pins is one of the classiest options.
The classic National Geographic muted tone map comes with a choice of 8 different frames – ensuring you can find the perfect style to match your other room decor. The map for travel tracking comes with a set of 100 pins – colored red, white and black (although we would use these pastel metallic pins instead, which can be purchased separately !)
The large push pin world map frame measures at 27.5 inches by 39.5 inches. The world map for marking travel is priced right around $100 USD.
Earning rave reviews from fellow purchasers, the high-quality pinnable world map is backed by a board that is easy to pin – and it arrives ready to hang!

Personalized Push Pin Map for Tracking Travel
What is better than a Push Pin World Travel Map? A Push Pin Personalized Map! The best part about the National Geographic framed Travel map with Pins is that it can also be personalized!
The inclusion of a name adds an extra special touch. In fact, a customized, personalized push pin world map makes a great gift for an upcoming trip. We also think it’s the best travel map for give as a wedding or anniversary present!
The personalized push pin map – which can include 3 lines of text with 30 characters per line – can include a name, trip title or short travel quote. The customized text transforms the elegant artwork into a classy personalized world travel map.
The Personalized Travel Map with Pins comes with the same specifications as the map above, but does cost just slightly more for the upgraded customization.

DIY World Map Poster with Pins World Travel Tracker
While $100 is an affordable price for a beautiful world travel map with pins and frame, there are options for a less-expensive wall world map with pins. Namely, you can make a travel map wall hanging – with just a little creativity.
To create your own wall map with pins, you can purchase a rolled National Geographic Map – like this one . To build a travel map that can be pinned, buy a cork board that is the same size – like this one – and a set of pins – like these . You can either tack the poster to the cork board or use spray glue . And, just like that, you have created your own pinnable world map!
Pro Tip: If you are looking for inexpensive artwork, check out our list of the Best Map Wall Art for Less than $50 !
Travel Globe with Pins Vacation Map Tracker
While we love World Map Wall Art , we also love map-themed home decor ! Globes can be a gorgeous addition to any room – but globe maps that can track travels are unique.
There are two popular kinds of globe travel trackers: Cork or Magnetic. Both are fantastic for a desk or nightstand – so which globe to mark your travels that you choose depends on your personal style.
Cork Globe with Pins Travel Tracker Map
The Cork Globe to track travels is minimalistic in design. The pinnable globe is a simple black map on cork material. Small in size, the cork map globe is less than 6 inches tall (although there is a more expensive, larger version ). The globe to pin travels comes with 50 bright pins that stand out against the black map. Best of all, the unique world globe with push pins comes at an affordable price (less than $50!).
Magnetic Globe Travel Tracker
A unique way to track travels on a map is with magnetic pins – and a magnetic globe is a beautiful display! This 10-inch globe with magnetic pins comes in four styles – Black, Tan, Blue and Topographic – along with 40 magnetic pins to mark your travels.
Pro Tip: Want more art decor ideas? Find more tips in our blog post, Travel Art for Wanderlust !
Countries Visited Map: Scratch-Off
While we love the idea of a wall map with pins, there are other styles of maps to track your travels – namely, a Scratch-Off Travel Map. With a scratch-away map, travelers can unveil the countries they have visited when they return home from their trip. It’s a great visual way to display your globe-trotting adventures.
Furthermore, scratch-off maps tend to be less expensive than a push pin travel map. Both of our recommended country scratch-off maps are less than $30.
Gold Scratch-Off Map to Track Where You’ve Traveled
A classy rendition of a wanderlust scratch-off map is this pastel map covered in gold foil. The reason that we think this is the best scratch map is that it is poster size, which makes it easier to reveal the countries you have visited…and it makes a nice wall art display. (Just purchase an inexpensive scroll frame to turn the poster into a visually pleasing Framed Scratch Off World Map!)
Black Scratch Map to Track Places Visited
A vibrant way to display the countries you have visited on a map, this black map to show where you’ve traveled definitely stands out. A feature we love about this world map tracker – that is not found in many other travel tracking maps – is country flags (that can also be revealed) at the bottom of the map.
United States Visited Map of Travels
Explorers who want to specifically track their travels of the USA can use a ‘States Traveled’ map. Similar to the ‘Countries Visited’ maps, there are numerous styles of United States of America travel tracking maps.
US Travel Map with Pins Trip Tracker Map
This framed US Travel Map with push pins is exactly like our recommended World Map with Pins – but uses a detailed map of the USA. The United States map comes with a choice of frames. We also love that this US map for tracking travel can be personalized with customized text!
Scratch-Off ‘States I have Visited’ Map
This gold coated United States Travel Map is beautifully designed to reveal a detailed cartographic map. The poster-size map to record places visited is a stunning wall hanging – both when it is covered and as states are revealed.
Personalized US Photo Map Display
The poster size USA photo map is a fantastic way to preserve travel memories from adventures across the States. You use your own photos and cut them into the shape of each state – creating a personalized US Places We’ve Been Map with a collection of your own photo travel memories.
National Parks Scratch Off Map to Track My Travel
We love country and world maps to mark your travels, but not all ‘Where You’ve Been’ travel trackers are in map form. In fact, we are quite fond of this US National Parks poster to show where you’ve visited…and which parks you might plan to visit in the future.

What travelers are raving about
Over 1 million people have already tried Wanderlog and loved its easy trip planning features.
Planning your trip by having all the attractions already plugged into a map makes trip planning so much easier.
I have used several trip planning apps. This one by far is the best. The interaction between goggle maps makes the planning so much easier. Adding an adventure not in the app is also easy. Love the connection to Trip Advisor also. Everything is connected including booking a stay. Easy to use on phone, tablets and computer! Well thought through development.
I'm a rather extensive planner when I take trips so this was great. I liked how it auto-filled all of my travel information from my email account.
This is everything I needed in a trip-planning app. Everything is in one place - lodging, restaurants, destinations. I can put notes to write out little schedule details like when I plan to put my son down for a nap. Each destination you set up automatically puts in a link to that place's website, their hours of operation, travel distance from you place of lodging and more. The app is easy to use and so so helpful.
So much easier to visualize and plan a road trip to my favourite rock climbing destinations and explore the area around.
I absolutely love this app!!! I would recommend to anyone who is seriously planning a trip. It will take you through there entire process with ease and all the features you would ever need. The pro version has some features that would be nice to have, especially during the trip itself, but none of it is absolutely necessary. My only criticism is of the pro payment options. You can only buy an annual subscription, and no monthly options exist. Even a 3 month/semi annual sub would be nice.
It left me speechless that I can add places to my trip and they get automatically populated with a featured pic and description from the web.
I’ve been dreaming of a tool like this for years and finally it’s here! Wanderlog is my new go-to tool after decades of professional travel.
I really like how user friendly it is and the auto-save. I also enjoy being able to look at trips that others have planned for inspiration.
Absolutely love this app! It is so helpful when planning my trips. I especially love The optimize route option. When I have all my information in place like my starting point and my ending point it is fabulous! I found it was worth it for me to buy the subscription to the app to use this feature. I especially love how it will suggest things to do if you don't have any plans. I do wish it had a biking option for travel between points of interest. But other than that I love the app!
Very intuitive and simple while still providing a bunch of features, like photos on the destinations, descriptions and suggestions for nearby places to visit.
Yesterday I walked my kids through the vacation timeline that I've built so far and their excitement levels went way up!

Add the shape of a country and choose “invert”. This way, with a single click, the surroundings of the country, both water and land, turn to the colour of your choice. For example, you can make them the colour of water (RGB, 173, 255, 209), or white, to separate the country of its neighbouring countries and create a floating effect. With the option to adjust the shape transparency, you can colour countries without losing the display of roads, rivers and mountains. Would you like to create a world map and show all the countries you visited? Give all of them a different colour.
Use different POI markers to pin different trips
You can mark your points of interest with dots, squares or any of the standard shapes provided in the editor. Add a label to the markers or number them to display the chronological order of your trip. Or, display the label without a surrounding marker, like an airplane or a ferry. Mark your favorite restaurants, hikes or beaches. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in the editor, easily upload your own custom markers!
Easily create a route map with the route editor that draws on the exact roads you travelled!
Combine Printmaps to show your travel in world view
If you want to show a close-up of your travel route and a world view with your destination highlighted, then combine two Printmaps! After creating your maps you receive a file that is ready for editing in Photoshop or Illustrator, or any other editing program you might use, to add the finishing touches to the maps and to put them together into your awesome, personalised travel map.

If you’re planning a trip, you might be wondering how to figure out where to go and in what order. Luckily, Google has a free tool that you can use in order to get a better sense of your travel plans. We’ll walk you through how to make a travel itinerary with Google Maps through its My Maps feature. In a few easy steps, you can master an excellent organizational tool that’ll help you plan the best trip possible.
Setting Up Your Map
- Unfortunately, as of October 2021, Google no longer supports the “My Maps” app on phones. If you’re on mobile, you’ll have to use your phone’s web browser to access the site while on the go. [2] X Research source
- If you don’t already have a Google account, setting one up is a quick process. A Google account gives you a number of benefits, including a new gmail address. Check out this link to start the set-up process: https://accounts.google.com/signup/v2/webcreateaccount?flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=SignUp
- For instance, your might name your map something like “California Summer Trip 2022,” and you could enter a description like, “Places to see and eat during two-week California road trip.”
- For example, for a California road trip, you might enter “Golden Gate Bridge” into the search box. My Maps will automatically direct you to its location.
- For instance, if you’ve searched for “Golden Gate Bridge,” there will be a white box that offers some information on the location, and even a rating from other users. Click on the “Add to map” button to send it to your saved locations.
- For example, you might fill in the description to the “Golden Gate Bridge” box with something like, “Spend at least 1 hour here—must-see location.”
- You might consider changing the colors of your pins to match how important each location is to your trip. For example, must-see locations could be red pins, your housing spots could be green pins, and optional places to visit could remain as blue pins.
Creating an Itinerary and Planning Routes
- For example, you might have a layer titled “Places to see,” one titled “Places to eat,” and one titled “Places to sleep.” You can then put sightseeing destinations, restaurants, and hotels you want to stay at in their respective layers.
- You can add more than one location to a single route. For example, if you wanted to plot a route from Big Sur to the Golden Gate Bridge, and then to Palo Alto, you can add all three locations to your route layer and create a multi-stop path. [11] X Research source
- By clicking on the three dots next to the layer with your travel route, then selecting “Step-by-step directions,” My Maps will create a set of directions for your travel. Handy!
- For example, by using My Maps, you might notice that seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, walking around San Francisco, and eating at a restaurant in Berkeley are close enough to all be doable in one day, while visiting Big Sur might be better saved for another afternoon. My Maps can help you plan out the most efficient trip possible, so you can enjoy your travels even more.
- When sharing your map, you can also choose the option that allows others to edit the map as well. With this option selected, your friends can pick places that they’re interested in as well, so you can have them all on the same document. [13] X Research source
- Although My Maps can’t be viewed offline, you can download an offline map of any areas you’re interested in on your phone. Using the Google Maps app, type in a location into the search bar, tap the name of the location, then navigate to the option “Download offline map.” [15] X Research source

I WANTED to like it!
I wanted to like it, but too frequently, I click on the App and Its prompting me to re-enter everything: where I've travelled, where I live and desired destinations ... ALL OVER AGAIN!!! Soooooo frustrating! And quite frankly, it doesn't DO ALL that much!!! You choose the countries, the states, if you live in the US, some color selections and that's it!!!! That's all you have to input!!! So, Why can't it retain that little information???? And in return it displays where you've been displayed on a world map, the percentage of the world you've seen and where you rank amongst other users. So you know want to know where this APP Ranks??? A (2)!!! Visiting new destinations is supposed to be exciting! How is that reflected in this App? What is the point if you're more frustrated using this app than going through TSA!
Developer Response ,
We are sorry for the frustration! We have launched a new version of the app that not only fixes the issues mentioned but also comes with new features such as cities, regions, and travel inspirations (to name a few!). Please let us know if you have any other feedback by emailing us at [email protected]!
Good idea but…
This is a good app and I even paid to remove ads and to unlock all the features. HOWEVER, it needs to give more control to the user. They collect so much of your personal information. It’s like either use it and let us collect these information, or leave it. Also, I was forced to sign up to their newsletter. It said I can withdraw from their newsletter at anytime but there is no option for that in the map. I paid for the premium features but you know what? Don’t. None of the premium features were worth it. Let me start off by cities. You can type and choose the cities that you’ve been to and cities that you want to visit. But that is it. You can’t even see a list of those cities that you want to visit, let alone a map of it. Looks like they made it easy for them to collect our information. Inspiration doesn’t have anything. It said it would show travel photos. The only photo it shows is the thumbnail when you select from want/been. If you do download this app, please do go to privacy section and read the “What personal information do we collect?” Section. So far, what a waste of money it has been. If it gets improved, I will update my review.
Thank you for your feedback. We are apologizing for any issues you may have had with the app. Please email us at [email protected] so we can see how we can improve your experience with the app.
Essential travel app
Every traveler should have this app to track countries visited. I’ve been using it for a few years now and seen it progress in features and usability. I love the latest enhancements, particularly new countries with states. But there are additional enhancements that I’d like the developers to consider. Here are my top 3: 1. Small countries are really hard to see on the map right now. Can you make it easier? For example, Liechtenstein gets lost between all of the states. And Pitcairn is nearly impossible, at least for me, to find without using the search feature. 2. Dates of visit would be nice 3. Ability to export the list to a spreadsheet. Bugs? There are a couple but nothing really significant, e.g. South Georgia and South Sandwich are not in Europe. There may have been a conversion bug as my list of countries went from 60 to 58. I reviewed and updated it and it’s now back to 60. Overall, a great app, worthy of of 5 stars!
Thank you so much for helping us improve our app. We have added your suggestions to our "enhance" list. We wish there were more feedbacks like yours. Your help is truly appreciated. Happy travels!

Make your own travel map of visited countries with MapChart
It is easy to make your own travel map showing places you have travelled or you plan to visit with MapChart. In this post, we will see some variations of such maps from users of the website.
First off, and one of the most popular options, a travel map that shows counties visited in the United States :
The map’s legend provides more detail to the map, dividing the colored counties into three categories (lived in, visited, and passed through counties). This is pretty common to have on a travel map, making it more comprehensive.
Another option on the USA Counties map is to take advantage of the shortcut to color all counties in a State. This way, it’s easy to also show unvisited States:
Similarly, on a larger scale, a USA and Canada map showing States visited in these two countries :
If you are based or have travelled in Europe, you can use the Europe Detailed map or the EU NUTS maps to showcase every province you have visited:
Finally, there are always the World map pages ( Simple and Detailed ). Here you can quickly create a map listing countries you visited or plan to visit worldwide:
These are just some examples that you can get inspiration from and make your own travel map. Keep track of your travels with MapChart, update it with new places you visit, and share it with your friends and family!

Mario’s excellent run continues with Mario & Luigi: Brothership on the Switch
At the tail end of the switch’s life nintendo is putting out another great mario rpg..

For a character that’s been around so long, Mario is in something of a golden period. Since last year his mustache has been spotted in theaters , theme parks , and the best ( and weirdest ) side-scrolling Super Mario game in a long time. But he’s had a particularly strong run in role-playing games on the Switch, with recent remakes of both Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and the original Super Mario RPG . Now we have Mario & Luigi: Brothership which keeps the streak alive with a blend of charm, humor, and clever gameplay.
Brothership , once again, starts with the brothers getting whisked away to a fantasy realm in need of help. This time it’s the oceanic world of Concordia, which has been broken apart into a series of islands. The bros end up in a place called Ship Shape Island, a name that’s a bit of a misnomer. While it’s technically an island, it’s also a ship, a floating city like something out of Waterworld . Soon they learn that they need to find the other broken-off pieces of Concordia and literally tether them back to Ship Shape, thus putting the world back together again. Also, for some reason, almost everyone in this world has a power socket for a face.
- The Nintendo Switch has turned into an excellent Mario RPG machine
It’s weird, but things start out simple enough, as you have to pilot the seas to find each island, and then travel to them by firing yourself out of a cannon. There’s an overarching plot about an important lighthouse, a revered tree, and some evil electrical components, but Brothership has the most personality when you visit each of the disparate islands to solve their particular problems before connecting them.
What has always separated the Mario RPGs — aside from all of the Nintendo trappings — is their sense of humor. These games are funny . And Brothership is just as goofy as its contemporaries, with communities suffering from chronic hair gel shortages and characters that include a floating pig (who definitely isn’t a pig) and an old turnip who gives terrible advice and makes even worse puns.
That sense of playfulness extends to the gameplay. Brothership is a turn-based RPG with some light platforming and puzzle-solving. The battles, like the rest of the Mario & Luigi series, are based on timing; you have to hit a button at just the right time to get the most out of an attack. The timing varies whether you’re stomping on a bad guy’s head, smacking them with a hammer, or firing a Koopa shell in their direction, and the brothers can work together on most attacks. This means that, unlike most turn-based RPGs, you aren’t simply selecting actions from a menu. You have to be more involved even for the simpler battles.
This was all true of past games, and so initially Brothership can feel very familiar. But a few hours in it starts to open up with some clever role-playing features. Most notable is something called “plugs,” which are essentially buffs or actions that you can craft and then equip. These do everything from let the brothers heal automatically without using a turn, to increasing your attacks against flying enemies. There are a bunch, so you can really customize your bros, but the twist is that each plug can only be used a certain number of times before it has to recharge for a while. This forces you to experiment and think about what bonuses you want to use and when.
The other major new feature is also my favorite: Luigi logic. The idea is that, at key moments in the game, Mario’s brother will use his unique brain to find a solution to a particular problem. This could mean finding a strange way to navigate an obstacle or a weird new attack to down a boss. You don’t have any control over these ideas, but they’re very funny, and go a long way towards building out the goofy vibe that makes these games so charming. For once, Luigi is bumbling in a way that’s actually helpful.
Of course, Brothership is also notable for being potentially the last major Switch exclusive. There are some more remasters on the way, like Xenoblade Chronicles X , along with possible cross-generation games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A . But Brothership joins the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Princess Peach: Showtime in ushering out the Switch in what is sure to be its last year as Nintendo’s main focus ( for real this time ). The wait for the next console has been an odd one , but games like this make it a lot more tolerable.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership launches on November 7th on the Nintendo Switch.
