Virgin Voyages offers point redemptions sporadically throughout the year. The availability of cruises you can book with points pop up and disappear just as quickly. You can typically find them on the Virgin Red Travel redemption .

Previous Cruise Redemptions

Previously, offers were for the following:

  • 80,000 Virgin Red Points : five-night Caribbean cruise departing from Miami, Florida, and visiting Virgin’s private beach club in the Bahamas, about $0.30 per point value.
  • 100,000 Virgin Red Points : Seven-night European cruise departing from Barcelona to the French Riviera, or an eight-night Virgin cruise to the Caribbean, visiting Puerto Plata and the Beach Club in Bimini.

Earning Points for Your Virgin Cruise

There are several ways to make sure you have enough points to take advantage of the Virgin Voyages Cruise for points offers when they pop up. Aside from already having the 80 to 100k Virgin Red points, here are some effective methods to earn or transfer points toward your Virgin Voyages cruise:

  • If you have a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account, you already have a Virgin Red account. You can think of the points as being one and the same.
  • Transfer Ratio: 1:1 to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, often with promotional increases up to an additional 30%.
  • Notable Cards: American Express Platinum card (US), American Express Business Gold card (US), and American Express Green card (US).
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards: Transfer ratio of 1:1.
  • Citi ThankYou Points: Transfer ratio of 1:1.
  • Capital One Rewards: Transfer ratio of 2:1.5.

Each of these programs offers different credit cards that allow you to earn points on everyday spending, which can then be transferred to Virgin Atlantic.

Transferring Points to Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Red

Once you have accumulated sufficient points, the next step is transferring them to Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Red, which is the platform used for cruise booking redemption. Transfers from American Express, Chase, or Citi to Virgin Atlantic are usually straightforward and can be done through the respective program’s website. After the points are in your Virgin Atlantic account, you’re good to book your Virgin cruise!

The redemptions are typically for one room type and book into a Central Sea Terrace Cabin or The Sea Terrace Cabin, which are not base-level rooms, offering a comfortable setting complete with a balcony and a hammock.

Virgin Atlantic Holidays Points Plus Money

Another option to consider when booking your Virgin Voyages cruise is the “Points Plus Money” feature offered by Virgin Atlantic Holidays. This feature allows you to offset the cost of your cruise with a combination of points and cash. Here’s how it works:

  • Utilize the Points Plus Money feature: For every 3,000 points you redeem, you can reduce the cost by £16.50. This way, even if you don’t have enough points to cover the entire cost, you can still obtain a discount on your Virgin Voyages holiday.
  • Book your flight and cruise with Virgin Atlantic Holidays Customer Support Team: Contact the Virgin Atlantic Holidays Customer Support Team at 0344 472 9646. Ensure to provide your Flying Club membership number and specify the amount of points you wish to redeem. Your Virgin Points will be deducted from your account at the time of booking. The points you earn for the money part of the purchase will be added to your account within seven days of travel.

It should be noted that at £0.0055 per point, this is a pretty horrible redemption value for points.

Key Takeaways

  • Point redemptions for Virgin Voyages are only available during active Virgin Red promotions.
  • Accumulating points through various loyalty programs and transferring them to Virgin Atlantic, then to Virgin Red, is the pathway to booking your cruise with points.
  • Keeping a close eye on promotions and being ready to transfer and redeem points when the opportunity arises is crucial for successfully booking a Virgin Voyages cruise with points.

With the right strategy and timing, booking a Virgin Voyages cruise with points can lead to significant savings, making your sea voyage an even more rewarding experience.

In conclusion, booking a Virgin Voyages cruise with points, if you are quick and get one of the previous 80k point offers, is a fantastic way to make your dream vacation more affordable. By following these steps and staying vigilant for Virgin Red promotions, you can set sail on a luxurious Virgin Voyages cruise without breaking the bank. Bon voyage!

We love great deals at Upgraded Points, especially when one comes around for something that usually is a bit tricky to book with points — like cruises.

Virgin Voyages is back with awesome deals on select cruises that you can book with Virgin Red points.

Here are all the juicy details.

There are 4 new deals available for Mediterranean all-inclusive cruises that are bookable using Virgin Red points.

These limited-time deals are available for sailings between May and October 2024, with many different itineraries available. The price is per cabin , regardless if you book for 1 or 2 people, in a Sea Terrace or Central Sea Terrace room.

You’ll want to act quickly, as availability is first come, first served.

  • 5-night Caribbean cruise between June and September 2024 : 115,000 points
  • 14-night Barcelona to Miami on October 27, 2024 : 280,000 points
  • 7-night Mediterranean cruises on May 12 or May 19 : 120,000 points
  • 7-night Mediterranean cruise between May and October 2024 : 160,000 points

These Virgin Voyages Deals are available through the Virgin Red website . Just click on Spend at the top of the screen.

Virgin Voyages cruise

Cruises can be tricky to book with points (especially if you like maximizing their value), so it’s awesome to see these Virgin Voyages cruises offer excellent redemption value.

Virgin Voyages itineraries, in particular, are more expensive than most since they’re adults-only, feature high-end food, and include a lot of activities for free. They also include Wi-Fi and gratuities in the purchase price.

As an example, a 5-night Riviera Maya cruise in the Caribbean can cost you $2,676 for 2 guests . If you were to book this cruise for 115,000 points, it’d net you a value of 2.32 cents per point — but it gets even better!

Virgin Red points are easy to earn since you can link your Virgin Red account directly to your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account. While these 2 programs are technically different, you can still transfer points seamlessly between them at a 1:1 ratio.

Link Virgin Red to Virgin Atlantic account

It’s very easy to earn Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points as the program is partners with all of the major transferrable currency programs, including:

  • American Express Membership Rewards — 1:1 ratio
  • Bilt Rewards — 1:1 ratio
  • Capital One Miles : 1:1 ratio
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards — 1:1 ratio
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards  — 1:1 ratio
  • Marriott Bonvoy — 3:1 ratio (5,000 point bonus for every 60,000 points transferred)

So, if you wanted to take advantage of one of these deals, you could simply transfer points over from one of the aforementioned programs to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and then transfer them again to Virgin Red, where you’ll be able to book the cruise.

But the deal becomes even sweeter when you take into account the fact that both American Express and Chase are featuring a 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, meaning you could book a 5-night Caribbean cruise by transferring just 89,000 points !

You can now book select Virgin Voyages cruises for only 89,000 Virgin Red points. The cruises are for 2 people on a few different itineraries, including transatlantic options. You’ll need to book soon to take advantage of this deal as there are a limited number of cabins available.

how to book a virgin cruise with points featured image

When it comes to miles and points, many of us are focused on two main redemption avenues: flights and hotels. Logically, this makes sense, as those are often the two biggest expenses when it comes to travel and can significantly impact the quality of your vacation as you move up the luxury scale.

Understandably so, the right move is to avoid other redemption options like gift cards and merchandise as the value is so poor. But sometimes, there is a unique redemption that can actually deliver outsized value for the right audience.

Let’s look at a unique redemption opportunity offered by Virgin Voyages, and learn how you can book a Virgin Voyages cruise with points.

Virgin Voyages – Overview

Virgin Voyages is the cruise line arm of Virgin Group. The Virgin Voyages fleet currently is made up of four ships: the Scarlet Lady, the Valiant Lady, the Resilient Lady, and the Brilliant Lady.

Virgin Voyages cruises are for adults only, meaning you need to be at least 18 years old to sail with them. This creates a different experience, as opposed to the typical cruise ship experience of having people of all ages onboard.

virgin voyages valiant lady ship in water

Virgin cruise ships travel around the world, including to the Caribbean, Europe, South Pacific, Transatlantic, and more.

Passengers on Virgin Voyages receive all food, soft drinks, tips, group fitness classes, entertainment, and Wi-Fi free of charge. For those who like to drink, alcohol will most likely be your biggest expense while onboard.

Booking a Virgin Voyages cruise with points is a straightforward process, but has a few steps that need to be followed carefully in this order: finding Virgin cruise availability, earning Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points , transferring points to Virgin Red, and finally, making the actual redemption.

Finding Virgin Cruise Availability

The ability to redeem points for a Virgin Voyages cruise is not always available as Virgin is most likely using this redemption as a mechanism to fill empty cabins in advance of cruise dates. It does however seem to be offered at least a few times a year, so it is worth keeping an eye out if you are interested in making this redemption.

If there are any Virgin Voyages cruises available for redemption, they will be displayed on this page . For example, at the time of this posting Virgin Voyages is offering multiple sailings as redemption options from either Athens or Barcelona for only 80,000 Virgin Red points . Cash rates range from $3,800 to $4,500 CAD for the cruises listed in this redemption offer.

virgin voyages cruise redemption with price

While the dates and itineraries do change each time Virgin Voyages has sailings available for redemption, the current four itineraries are Greek Island Glow, Adriatic Sea & Greek Gems, The Irresistible Med, and French Daze & Ibiza Nights.

All Virgin Voyages redemptions are for two passengers. While you can book a cabin for only one person, the pricing does remain the same.

The current redemption options book into a Central Sea Terrace Cabin or The Sea Terrace Cabin , which are surprisingly not the base-level rooms. You can expect a nicely appointed room, complete with a balcony and hammock.

virgin voyages sea terrace cabin

Once you have found the Virgin cruise you are interested in redeeming points for, you will need to earn (or transfer to) Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points.

Earning Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Points

The best way to earn Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points is to transfer them from US Amex Membership Rewards . While there are many cards that can easily allow you to earn enough US Membership Rewards points, some of the standout options include the American Express Platinum card (US) , American Express Business Gold card (US) , or the American Express Green card (US) .

virgin voyages book with points

The American Express Platinum card (US)  earns Membership Rewards and offers cardholders over $1,000 in annual benefits .

Check out our American Express Platinum (US) card review for more details.

You can view all US credit cards that earn Membership Rewards points through our “ Compare US Credit Cards ” tool. If you have yet to enter the US credit card market, it is easy to get started. Consider digging into how to get your first US credit card with Nova Credit and everything you need to know about Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITINs) to get started.

While Amex Membership Rewards points transfer 1:1 to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points , American Express often runs promotions in which the value of transferring to Virgin increases, often up to an additional 30%. This means that if you are looking to transfer Membership Rewards to 80,000 Virgin points during a 30% promotion, you would only need to transfer 62,000 US American Express Membership Rewards points.

While Virgin points do not expire, I would recommend only transferring your US Membership Rewards when you are ready to make a redemption. Plus, US Membership Rewards transfers to your Virgin Atlantic account are very quick (typically instantly) so you won’t have to wait too long once you transfer points.

Linking Virgin Atlantic Flying Club with Virgin Red

Now that you have found Virgin Voyages cruise availability and have the required Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points, you need to create a Virgin Red program account and link it to your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account.

Heads up that as of right now, a US phone number is required to sign-up for Virgin Red so you might need to look into Google Fi or other similar options to create an account. Even if you try to enter a Canadian number, it does identify it as a non-US phone number and will not allow you to proceed.

Once you have created your Virgin Red account, you can link it by entering your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club number in the “Link Accounts” section of your Virgin Red account.

virgin red and virgin atlantic flying club account link

Once linked, you should be able to view your overall point balance and be ready to make your Virgin Voyages redemption.

Making the Cruise Redemption

Before you make the Virign Voyages redemption, ensure you read through the terms and conditions to understand the booking process and if there are any restrictions that apply.

Once you are ready to redeem, visit the redemption page, sign in to your Virgin Red account, and go through the steps which require you to fill out your personal information (and any personal information for those who will be sailing with you) and finalize the redemption. Once redeemed, you will receive an access key which can be used to book your cabin directly with Virgin Voyages.

When making a Virgin Voyages points redemption, all taxes and fees are included which means you will be paying nothing out of pocket. This sweetens the deal even more, as there are no additional charges that are typical with other travel redemptions, such as award flight redemptions.

Our Thoughts on This Redemption

I’m not a cruise person at all, but this redemption definitely has me considering it should other Virgin Voyages sailings be open for redemption in the future.

We’ve seen Virgin Voyage redemption rates between 80,000 to 10,000 Virgin points, making it a reasonable amount of points to earn. This prices out at a bit over a 2 cent per point value, so from a value perspective the redemption makes sense. That being said, there are other good redemption options also available for Virgin points, such as flying on ANA’s “The Room” business class to Japan .

Additionally, when you consider that the redemption is good for two passengers and all food is included, this redemption can save you a significant amount of money and is a great frugal travel choice.

I think this redemption is worth considering if you like the idea of an adults-only cruise and are interested in crossing a bunch of destinations off your list without needing to do any real planning. Cruises are definitely not for everyone, but for those who do have interest, this is a fantastic redemption opportunity and would be well worth building a balance of US Membership Rewards points for a future transfer and redemption.

Redeeming Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points, and in turn, Virgin Red points, for a seven-night cruise on Virgin Voyages presents a unique and reasonably priced redemption option that is available to those who have entered the US credit card market.

Considering the fact that the number of points required can be typically earned from one credit card welcome bonus, and the fact that the cabin redemption is good for two passengers, this redemption option might be a slam dunk for those who are interested in exploring more of the world cruise-style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each Virgin Red member can book up to four cabins when redeeming points. This means you can book cabins for other people who are traveling with you if you are feeling generous or are looking to burn some extra points.

As with any miles and points redemption, it depends on your travel goals. If we look at the redemption from a straight value perspective, you are getting good value out of your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points with this redemption.  However, I would only make the redemption if you like the idea of an adults-only cruise and being able to visit many destinations in a short period of time.

Sign up for Virgin Red and once logged in, you can visit the “Link Accounts” page to add your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account number. Note that you will be required to enter a US phone number to create a Virgin Red account.

Hi, the 80k point are per person? Thank you for share this!

The deal last year was 80,000 Virgin points for a double occupancy cabin. We are hoping to see these deals come back again this summer!

I found this offer last July 2023 and we booked a cruise for August. The Greek glow cruise. It was simply amazing. I can’t believe that it would cost me 80,000 points which was nothing. I am eagerly waiting for the next time they offer this I have points ready. I don’t care where I’m going just so long as I can be on the Virgin cruise again completely zero out-of-pocket !!!

Hey Serena,

Thanks for sharing your experience and I’m glad to hear you were able to make this booking happen! I agree, it is a stellar redemption for the low amount of points it requires.

I cant actually see the cruises that are available?

Then there probably aren’t any available for redemption currently.

I want to book a Virgin Cruise in Greece with my Capital One Venture X points, but I can’t seem to find where to do so. Is this offer only a few times a year? We are flexible. Thanks, Dan

Unfortunately there are no Virgin cruise offers at this point in time. We did see a couple in the summer of 2023, so hopefully more opportunities come back this year.

When will Virgin atlantic have cruises available to book with points again?

Not sure, there isn’t really a rhyme or reason outside of them most likely looking to fill sailings. I’d keep an eye on the site weekly to see if anything comes up.

The pricing on these cruises is higher than when they first ran this deal last year. However, with two transfer bonuses from American Express and Chase, it is still a pretty good deal for cruise lovers.

Mediterranean sailings are available for Virgin Red members for 160,000 Virgin Points. Lucky Virgin Red sailors will be able to embark on an award-winning, seven-night Mediterranean voyage departing from either Barcelona or Athens. Virgin Voyages offers itineraries with departure dates Sunday-Sunday from May through mid-October for Barcelona sailings and May through to the end of July for Athens sailings.

For those ready to sail the Med as soon as possible, Virgin Red has launched a flash sale for seven-night sailings from Barcelona, departing on Sunday 12 May or Sunday 19 May, for the discounted points price of just 120,000 Virgin Points.

F ive-night Caribbean sailings departing from Miami between June and September are also available on Virgin Red for 115,000 Virgin Points.

And last but not least, you can also book transatlantic sailings from Barcelona (14 nights) for 280,000 Virgin Points or from Athens (16 nights) for 320,000 Virgin Points.

Key Details

Cabins are Central Sea Terrace or The Sea Terrace on Scarlet Lady or Resilient Lady, and will be determined by Virgin Voyages according to availability. The price is per cabin (one or two persons). There is no single sailor supplement available.

Virgin Red recommends that bookings should be completed no later than five business days before the date of travel.

Get More Value with Transfer Bonuses

This deal gets better if you have Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards. Both programs are offering a 30% bonus.

That means that f ive-night Caribbean sailings departing from Miami would cost you just 89,000 points or two people. Seven-night sailings from Barcelona would cost 93,000 points.

The First-Timer’s Guide to Virgin Voyages

Dress from AFRM

Embarking on your first Virgin Voyages cruise is an exciting adventure. This cruise line promises to redefine the traditional cruise experience with its modern, adults-only approach. As a first-timer, you’ll find plenty to love, but there might also be a few aspects that don’t quite hit the mark for everyone. Here’s a rundown of the things that I LOVED, as well as some things that may not work for everyone sailing on a Virgin Voyages cruise for the first time.

Things I loved about Virgin voyages

1. Modern Aesthetics and Design  Virgin Voyages ships boast a sleek, contemporary design. From the stylish cabins to the chic common areas, every inch of the ship exudes a modern vibe. The aesthetic appeal is perfect for those who appreciate clean lines, bold colors, and Instagram-worthy backdrops.

2. Adults-Only Experience  For many, the adults-only policy is a major selling point. Without children on board , the atmosphere is more sophisticated and relaxed, catering to adults looking for a more mature vacation experience.

3. Innovative Dining Options  Gone are the days of traditional cruise buffets. Virgin Voyages offers an array of unique dining venues, each with its own distinct cuisine and ambiance. With no extra charges for specialty dining, you can enjoy gourmet meals without worrying about the bill.

4. Wellness and Fitness Focus  Health-conscious travelers will appreciate the emphasis on wellness. The ships are equipped with state-of-the-art fitness centers, outdoor workout areas, and a variety of fitness classes. The spa services and wellness programs are also top-notch, providing a rejuvenating experience.

5. Entertainment and Nightlife  Virgin Voyages offers a vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene. With everything from immersive theater productions to nightclubs and live music, there’s always something exciting happening on board. The unique entertainment offerings ensure that boredom is never an option.

things that may not be for everyone

1. App-Centric Experience  While the use of technology is convenient, some might find the reliance on the Virgin Voyages app to be a bit overwhelming. From booking dining reservations to checking daily schedules, the app is integral to the cruise experience.

Dining reservations book up quickly and the general policy is that you cannot book the same restaurant more than once. We traveled with a group of 8, so timing reservations so that we could eat together did require more effort than on a traditional sailing. This can be a drawback for some.

2. Price Point  Virgin Voyages cruises are often more expensive compared to other mainstream cruise lines. While the all-inclusive nature of the dining and some onboard activities adds value, the initial cost may be a deterrent for budget-conscious travelers.

5. Learning Curve  For first-timers, adjusting to the unique Virgin Voyages experience can take a little time. The unconventional approach to cruising, from the app-centric operations to the avant-garde entertainment, might require some getting used to.

Sailing with Virgin Voyages for the first time offers a fresh and modern take on the traditional cruise experience. The sleek design, adults-only policy, and innovative dining and entertainment options are significant positives. However, knowing all that is involved in this cruising can help you decide if Virgin Voyages is the right choice for your next adventure.

The Best Way to Book Virgin Atlantic Flights With Points

Virgin Atlantic plane

Whether you’re eyeing a dream getaway or planning a business trip, understanding how to book flights with points and miles is key to maximizing your travel potential. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best strategies for booking Virgin Atlantic flights with points, including the best ways to redeem your rewards, how to earn points, and tips for finding award space with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

Table of contents

How to earn Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points

Flying, shopping, dining, and everyday spending can all help you earn Virgin points.

Flying with Virgin Atlantic

The most straightforward way to earn Virgin points is by taking flights with Virgin Atlantic or its partner airlines. Keep an eye out for special promotions and bonus-point offers to supercharge your earnings.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members accrue points depending on the route taken, ticket class, and Flying Club tier status, among other factors. Depending on whether you have Red, Silver, or Gold status, Flying Club members earn varying percentages of points:

  • Red member : earns between 25% and 400% of base points flown.
  • Silver member : earns between 25% and 400% of base points flown, plus a 30% bonus.
  • Gold member : earns between 25% and 400% of base points flown, plus a 60% bonus.

Credit cards

Credit cards are a convenient and lucrative way to earn points with everyday purchases. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club offers two co-branded credit cards that’ll earn you Virgin points for every dollar you spend. Virgin Atlantic Black Card earns 3x Virgin points per $1 spent on Virgin Atlantic purchases, plus 1.5x Virgin points everywhere else, while the Virgin Atlantic White Card earns 3x Virgin points per $1 spent on Virgin Atlantic and 1x Virgin point elsewhere.

Transfer partners

American Express, Chase, Citi, Capital One, and Bilt all earn rewards that can be transferred to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club at a 1:1 ratio. This makes earning Virgin points very easy to do, especially after you earn a sign-up bonus or two.

  • Online shopping

To boost your balance of Virgin points, check out the Virgin Atlantic shopping portal . It allows you to earn tons of points on your online spending, as long as you use Virgin’s site to click through to your preferred retailer.

How to book Virgin Atlantic flights with points

Booking Virgin Atlantic reward flights is a straightforward process that allows travelers to redeem their accumulated Virgin points for flights to their desired destinations. To begin, travelers can visit the Virgin Atlantic website and log in to their Flying Club account. From there, search for available flights using the “Book a Flight” tool and select the option to pay with points.

During the booking process, you’ll need to have the necessary amount of points available in your Flying Club account to cover the cost of the flight. Additionally, travelers should be mindful of any taxes, fees, and surcharges that may apply when redeeming points for flights.

This is especially true on Virgin Atlantic flights to London Heathrow (LHR); the airline passes along carrier-imposed surcharges in addition to fees, so travelers can get hit with fees upwards of $1,000.

How to redeem Virgin points to get the best deal

Redeeming Virgin points for maximum value is an exercise in flexibility. How many points you’ll need for a flight is going to depend on the season you’re traveling, whether you’re flying Virgin Atlantic or a partner, the cabin you’re flying in, and where you’re going. Being open to different travel dates and destinations can unlock more options and potentially lower redemption rates.

One hack? You can manipulate the reward seat finder by typing different airport codes into the URL. Another tip is to explore Virgin Atlantic’s partner airlines within the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club program, as this expands the range of available routes and often offers competitive redemption rates.

It’s important to know that Virgin Atlantic uses a distance-based award chart for flights. This is true both for flights operated by Virgin and for partner flights.

While the amount for partner flights will vary based on which airline you’re flying, the Virgin Atlantic award chart for Virgin Atlantic–operated flights is subject only to standard- and peak-season pricing.

Standard season travel dates and rewards

Virgin Atlantic prices flights differently depending on when you’re traveling. The standard-season dates for 2024 are as follows:

Most of the world:

  • January 4 to March 21
  • April 16 to June 15
  • September 3 to October 24
  • November 6 to December 6

Caribbean and Indian Ocean:

  • March 4 to March 21
  • April 16 to May 26
  • June 3 to July 19

Standard-season rates to/from the U.K.

Note that this is pricing for round-trip flights. If you’re only flying one-way, cut these figures in half.

Peak-season travel dates and rewards

As you’d expect, peak-season pricing is more expensive. These are the dates for 2024:

  • January 1 to January 3
  • March 22 to April 15
  • June 16 to September 2
  • October 25 to November 5
  • December 7 to January 5, 2025

Caribbean and Indian Ocean

  • January 1 to March 3
  • May 27 to June 2
  • July 20 to September 2
  • December 7 to March 2, 2025

Peak-season rates to/from the U.K.

This is also for round-trip flights, so keep that in mind when crunching the numbers.

Redeeming Virgin points with airline partners

This might sound counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to redeem your Virgin points isn’t with Virgin Atlantic at all. In fact, thanks to a strong network of airline partners and a generous distance-based award chart, redeeming your Virgin points for max value is incredibly easy.

Before it joined the SkyTeam alliance , Virgin Atlantic was a solo flier, meaning it needed to forge strong links with other airlines to bolster its route network and make flying better for its passengers.

Now, even though it’s been a member of SkyTeam for the past few years, Virgin Atlantic maintains an envious number of airline partners. This is great news for fliers looking for reward flights, especially since the partner network offers globe-spanning reach.

SkyTeam partners

There are 18 members of SkyTeam, including Virgin Atlantic.

  • Aeroflot (temporarily suspended)
  • ITA Airways
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Saudia Airlines
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Czech Airlines
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Xiamen Airlines

Other airline partners

Virgin Atlantic has nine additional partners that are not members of SkyTeam:

  • Air New Zealand
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • LATAM Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • South African Airways
  • Virgin Australia

Booking a Virgin Atlantic partner flight

Although getting great value from your Virgin points can be simple with partners, the booking process may not be. That’s because Virgin Atlantic Flying Club’s outdated system has a hard time with routes and partner availability.

Finding SkyTeam availability

If you’re wanting to find reward flights with SkyTeam, your best bet is to head over to Flying Blue’s website to search for dates. On Flying Blue’s website, you’ll be able to easily search for reward seats without needing to deal with Virgin’s IT issues.

As a member of SkyTeam, Flying Blue has access to all the same award availability as Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. This means that if you find a reward seat on their site, you’ll be able to redeem Virgin points for that flight.

Once you’ve found the reward flights you’re looking for, you can try a search on Virgin’s site. If it doesn’t show up, however, you’ll need to call to book.

Finding other partner availability

The rest of Virgin’s partners include Star Alliance members as well as airlines that aren’t in a partnership. You can find out how many points you’ll need for flights by navigating to Virgin’s partner page .

Finding reward flights can be a little more complex with these alternative partners, because most Star Alliance airlines make it difficult to figure out which seats are available to partners at a saver level. Your best bet is to try out SAS Eurobonus, then calling Virgin to see if the flight is also accessible to them.

Save time with point.me

All of this has probably convinced you that searching for reward flights, especially with non-SkyTeam members, is too complicated. It’s true. It is. But there’s a better way.

Rather than relying on Virgin’s notoriously incomplete website to find reward flights or attempting a workaround with other airlines, point.me can do the work for you.

point.me saves time by searching the sites for you, then gathering all of your options and giving you live award availability. You won’t need to wrangle with a foreign airline’s website while trying to search; point.me can provide the answers. And when it comes time to book, you’ll get step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

More ways to redeem Virgin points

Virgin Atlantic flights or partner flights may be the best way to redeem your Virgin points, but you can spend them on other aspects of travel too:

  • Seat upgrades
  • Hotel stays
  • Car rentals
  • Experiences
  • Lounge access
  • Points-plus-money bookings

The worst ways to redeem Virgin points

Earning and redeeming Virgin points can be a lengthy process, so you don’t want to waste them. If you’re trying to maximize their value, redeeming your points for reward flights is definitely the way to go.

Other redemptions? Not so much. Aside from redeeming points for seat upgrades, you’ll want to avoid using your points for most of the options above.

Tips for finding Virgin Atlantic award seats

We’ve run through how to find and book seats using your Virgin points, but our strongest tip is this: Don’t waste your time on Virgin’s shoddy website trying to find reward flights. While it’ll work just fine for Virgin Atlantic flights, it struggles with searching for partner awards. It also lacks a dedicated calendar function.

Instead, use a reward-flight search engine such as point.me to save yourself time and headache. While you may still need to call in to book your flights, you can rest easy knowing that point.me’s search process will thoroughly vet seats for you — all you have to do is click.

Last chance: Virgin Atlantic 40% off all routes promo — book flights from just 6,000 points

Ben Smithson

Editor's Note

Looking to travel across the pond this summer? To celebrate the airline's 40th birthday, Virgin Atlantic unveiled a new offer to help you save thousands of points on your next award redemption to the United Kingdom, but you'll need to act quickly, as this promotion ends June 24.

You can get 40% off all award redemptions in economy, premium economy and Upper Class (business class) on any flight operated by Virgin Atlantic, including all routes from the U.S. to London on any date in 2024. This is a better Promo Awards deal than the one we saw in January, which only offered 20% off redemptions for most destinations.

To take advantage of this 40% off award deal, you must book by 7:59 p.m. EDT (23:59 GMT) on June 24 for travel through Dec. 31.

As a reminder, Virgin Atlantic operates between London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) and the following U.S. airports:

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)
  • Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD)

The discounts apply to flights in any direction and any cabin with award availability on any route. This offer is available for redemptions, upgrades and companion tickets.

Virgin Atlantic must operate the flight for your redemption to qualify for the promotion. Virgin Atlantic flies beyond London to various destinations in India, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, China and Nigeria, among other locations.

Round-trip economy redemptions start from just 12,000 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points from JFK or 18,000 points from LAX on off-peak dates. You'll see the points discount applied when booking online. So, if you want to fly to LHR for a positioning flight to start your European summer vacation, you can redeem just 6,000 points if you book a flight from JFK. This is a terrific deal.

To see the full list of starting award redemption prices in economy, premium economy and Upper Class, check out Virgin Atlantic's website .

While 40% award redemptions is a great deal, especially as this deal covers all dates, routes and cabins, customers will incur the full fees, taxes and substantial surcharges when booking with Virgin Atlantic.

Unlike with British Airways , there is no way to reduce the carrier-imposed surcharges by redeeming more points. Even in economy, you can expect to pay hundreds of dollars extra; in business class, the total is more than $1,000 round-trip. For example, this round-trip business-class flight from JFK to LHR can cost you just 57,000 points, but you must pay more than $2,000 in taxes and fees.

These surcharges remain the biggest frustration with the Flying Club program.

How to book Virgin Atlantic award flights

To take advantage of this great offer, you must book by 7:59 p.m. EDT. Sadly, the discount does not apply to existing bookings. You may consider canceling and rebooking if your existing flight falls within the eligibility window. However, availability is not guaranteed.

If you need to earn Virgin points for one of these awards, you can transfer points from American Express Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards , Capital One , Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou Rewards . These transfers process at a 1:1 ratio and should post instantaneously to your Virgin account.

This terrific offer from Flying Club is generous given it covers all routes in all classes for the rest of 2024. Just be mindful of those pesky surcharges when booking.
