Las Vegas – a city you’ve undoubtedly heard lots about, and for good reason. Vegas is one of the most eclectic and exciting cities you’ll find in the U.S. and the world.  While Vegas is most famous for its big casinos and headline shows, there is much more to do in Las Vegas than just gambling .

Plus, visiting in October is even better since most of the summer crowds would have dispersed, leaving you with ample opportunities to explore Vegas properly.

So, what can you do in Las Vegas in October? Stick around to find out.

Las Vegas Weather in October

Las Vegas lies within the larger region of the Mojave Desert , so its climate varies each month.

May to September sees high temperatures as high as 40°C (104°F). On the other hand, October brings in a wave of cooler temperatures. You can expect lows of about 21°C (69°F) and highs of 21°C (82°F).

There’s also very little chance of rainfall in October, so you don’t have to worry too much about bad weather.

What to Pack for Las Vegas in October

Weather conditions can fluctuate in Las Vegas during October, so here are a few things you should carry along with you:

  • Casual outfits: Vegas is all about the glitz and glam, but the reality is you won’t need to dress up everywhere you go. So please keep it simple with a few casual items like jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers for everyday outings.
  • Evening wear: After a day of sightseeing, you might be heading to a fancy restaurant or show that will require you to dress up a bit. You can keep it stress-free by packing in an evening dress, a fancy blouse, and a shirt and pants for gents.
  • Light Jacket: As evening settles in, temperatures drop, so it’s best to carry a light jacket to avoid a chill.
  • Walking shoes: Sightseeing usually involves a lot of walking. So, I highly recommend packing in a pair of walking shoes with good foot support to power you through the day.
  • Crossbody Bag: Walking around with a large backpack is not always practical or comfortable for exploring. In that case, bringing a lightweight crossbody bag for all your essentials might be better.
  •  Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses: While October is much cooler than the summer months, during this time, Las Vegas is still much warmer than many cities. And, the sun is quite harsh. So don’t forget to protect yourself by packing all the necessary sun protection.

Top Things to Do in Las Vegas in October

Now that we’ve covered the basics let’s get into the fun bit. Here are a few activities that you can look forward to in October:

1. Attend a Major Sporting Event

Las Vegas is home to various sports teams and hosts multiple teams and individual sporting events throughout the year.

It’s the home of the Las Vegas Lights, a professional soccer team in the U.S.L. Championship, who play their home games at the Cashman Complex. Their seasons extend into October, so if you’re into soccer (or football), you can catch one of their games.

Other sporting events in October include the NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Cup Series, and the P.B.R. Bull Riding Team Series. If any of these events pique your interest, then be sure to attend.

Dates: Various throughout October

2. Check Out the Las Vegas Oktoberfest

If there is one event that Germany is famous for, it’s got to be the epic Oktoberfest . So much so that this beer-loving event is held in other parts of the world, too – including Las Vegas.

This two-week festival usually begins at the end of September or early October. Various restaurants and pubs across Las Vegas celebrate this German festival, some putting their own spin on it.

More than 20 different types of beer are on display, with some even flown in from Germany. You can pair this along with some other German classics like schnitzel or badenwurst .

Dates: To be announced

3. Enjoy a Ride on the High Roller at the LINQ

Now Vegas is a pretty cool place to see when you’re on the ground. But what if I told you there’s a better way to see it? Through the air, of course. And, no, I don’t mean seeing it in the air via a helicopter or private plane ride, which will cost you an arm and a leg.

I’m talking about a ride on the High Roller Ferris Wheel , which sits along the iconic Las Vegas Strip Boulevard.

Standing at 167.6 m (550 feet) tall and 158.5 m (520 feet) wide, it is the second largest ferris wheel in the world, after the Ain Dubai. That’s right; it is even bigger and taller than the London Eye and Singapore Flyer.

From that height, you can see Las Vegas in all its greatness with clear, 360 degrees views of the city. Ticket prices start at around $28, making it a much more affordable sightseeing experience from the air.

There’s also the S.T.E.M. guided tour where you and the kids (if you have them) can learn more about its history, the technology used to build it and its architectural design.

4. Hangout in Area15

If a unique and adventurous experience is what you’re after, then you’ll find it at super fun Area15 . This massive entertainment zone offers everything from multi-sensory concerts to virtual reality events and art installations.

Once you enter, you’ll feel like you’re transported into a different world with the alternate universe theme and neon lights hitting you right away.

5. Admire the Seven Magic Mountains

If you’ve searched for things to do in Las Vegas, one attraction that would likely have popped up is the colorful Seven Magic Mountains. Sitting 10 miles south of Las Vegas, the Seven Magic Mountains is a public art display of seven brightly colored stacked limestone boulders.

What to do in vegas besides gamble

When the exhibition opened in 2016, it was only supposed to be on display for two years. Due to its popularity, it was made a permanent exhibition, which is great because now you might get to see it on your trip to Vegas.

The Seven Magic Mountains’ location outside of the city means that it’s one of the first things you’ll see when entering Vegas or the last thing you’ll see when leaving.

6. Pay the Neon Museum a Visit

The Neon Museum is the perfect place to visit for all things bright and light themes. Built in the 1930s, it became a graveyard where many casinos, hotels and restaurants would go to discard their used neon signs. Now, it’s an open-air museum that houses over 200 neon signs and other artifacts.

Most of the items have been saved from ruin and given new life. Many of these also provide a glimpse of Vegas’ past and how it became the glitzy and glam spot it is today.

non touristy things to do in vegas

Since this is an outdoor venue, October is the perfect time to visit the Neon Museum, as temperatures would have cooled by then. The Neon Museum is filled with gems, making it the ideal place for some highly Instagrammable pictures.

So if you’re looking to spice up your Instagram feed with some inspiring travel photos, the Neon Museum is the place to do so. There’s also a Hard Rock Cafe, with its flashy neon light sign, where you can head to after exploring for something to eat or drink.

7. Experience the Fountains of Bellagio Show

bellagio-fountain

Can you say that you’ve been to Vegas without visiting the Fountains of Bellagio? One of its most iconic attractions? Well, you could, but there’s no fun in that. The Fountains of Bellagio sit along the Las Vegas Strip outside the Bellagio Hotel and Casino.

Every day after midday, the musical fountain show takes place every half an hour when 1214 water nozzles and 4792 lights put together a perfectly synchronized performance to music.

This is the second largest fountain show in the world, after the Dubai Fountain. What makes this one so popular is the fact that it’s free. As you can imagine, getting a good view in the busy tourist months is hard when everyone flocks to them.

So, October is the perfect month to visit, as you won’t have to fight your way through crowds to get a good view of the Fountains of Bellagio.

8. Hang Around in the Downtown Arts District

Many travelers think everything happens on the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street. This is true, seeing that many of Vegas’s attractions are here. But, there’s one area many people forget to mention when discussing Las Vegas’ outstanding attractions – the Downtown Arts District (also called “18b”).

sign for the arts factory

This vibrant area sits between the excesses of the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street, extending into West Charleston. Here you’ll find a vast collection of art galleries, quirky workspaces, cafes, restaurants and antique stores. This is one of the most authentic areas in Las Vegas and is worth checking out if you want to get away from all the mainstream activities.

Where to Stay in Las Vegas in October

Las Vegas is not really about boutique hotels. I am sure there are some but honestly to have the full Vegas experience I am breaking with my boutique positioning and saying go for the full-on decadent 5-star experience – I consider it almost a tourist attraction to do this.

Here are my top choices on the Las Vegas strip:

For European glamour and top-end luxury, I loved my stay at The Palazzo.

Las Vegas has a wealth of activities to keep you entertained all year round. That said, October is a great time to visit since you’ll beat the summer heat and the overwhelming crowds. That’s a double win if you ask me.

Cheap Las Vegas package deals

Most popular las vegas flight and hotel deals, last minute vacation packages to las vegas, search by stars, search by review score, search by board, search by price, search by freebies, when to book a vacation in las vegas, tips for finding las vegas package deals.

  • There are loads of types of vacations in Las Vegas and the cost will depend on what type of trip you’re taking and for how long you’d like to stay. Here are the latest prices for a 3 night trip for 2 travelers: Top vacation $372; Family vacation $328; Romantic vacation $478; Luxury vacation $517; Budget vacation $240.

Why should you book a vacation package to Las Vegas?

The best way to enjoy Las Vegas, saving time and money, is with a vacation package. By bundling together hotels and flights, you will often be able to take advantage of preferential rates, as opposed to standard single rates when booking separately. You will also save time matching hotel availability to your flights. If flexibility isn’t your priority, Las Vegas vacation packages could leave you more money to spend in the city itself, rather than on getting there.

When should you book a vacation package to Las Vegas?

Booking a Las Vegas flight and hotel package is an efficient way to save on stress and cash. For the best deals and rooms, it’s advisable to search for Las Vegas vacation packages during quieter periods. Traveling during the week is generally more affordable than at weekends, and by booking earlier you can help avoid higher rates. The July-August ‘Monsoon’ season is a good time to find Las Vegas travel deals, as most travelers opt to visit during spring and fall when the weather is hotter and dryer. It’s also a good time to get away from the concrete and visit the surrounding valleys, mountains and national parks in cooler weather.

Whilst searching for Las Vegas travel deals, be sure to check out seasonal activities. Most crowd-pulling events such as the NASCAR race, the Super Bowl, and the Rodeo happen during fall and winter as well as major conventions such as the Consumer Electronics Show and the Magic International.

Where should you stay in Las Vegas during your vacation?

For any vacation type in las vegas:.

The Aria Resort and Casino is one of the classiest hotels on the Las Vegas strip, offering private cabana rental alongside a range of first-class, dedicated amenities to make your Las Vegas getaway feel special. The resort is just a 10-minute drive from McCarran International, and offers a 24-hour taxi and limo booking service. If you book a Sky Suite with the hotel, luxury transfer to and from the airport is included.

The Venetian Resort Hotel is a luxurious, whimsical Las Vegas creation. Housed in a sprawling Italianate palazzo, it boasts an on-site grand canal complete with gondolas, renaissance mall, spacious, eco-friendly suites and 10 outdoor pools. The hotel is just 12 minutes by car or taxi from the airport, and it offers a wide range of transport options, from a taxi booking service to a ‘Grazie’ shuttle service (free for Gold and Platinum members), running every half hour between 6.am and 6.30pm.

For family vacations in Las Vegas:

Marriot’s Grand Chateau, 15-minutes’ walk from the strip, boasts spacious family rooms, free valet parking, kids’ activity rooms and a bird’s-eye view of central Las Vegas. Just a ten-minute drive from the airport, head north onto McCarran Airport Connector, carry on to Swenson Street, then left onto E Harmon Ave. The Chateau offers free valet parking.

The Mandarin Oriental offers cozy family rooms and a range of child-oriented services, from children’s afternoon tea to the arrangement of certified babysitters, to ensure a stress-free stay for the whole family. The hotel is around a ten-minute drive by cab or car from the airport and is located right on ‘The Strip’.

For romantic vacations in Las Vegas:

The Desert Rose Resort, just 2 blocks from the southern part of the Strip, is a great choice for couples on a budget. It boasts a range of contemporary condominium suites with private patios or balconies. As it doesn’t host on-site bars or clubs, it’s ideal for those looking for something quieter. Just seven minutes from the airport by car, head north onto McCarran Airport Connector then left onto E. Tropicana Ave. After 1.6 miles, turn left onto Duke Ellington Way – the resort is on the right.

The MGM Grand attracts some of the world’s most famous acts to its numerous nightclubs and showrooms. With pool complexes, a range of signature bars and restaurants, and generously-sized suites, it’s an ideal honeymoon resort. The resort offers tax assistance and features on shuttle service routes to and from the airport (just 7 minutes away, though usually longer via shuttle). If driving from McCarran International, head north onto McCarran Airport Connector and left onto E. Tropicana Ave., then right onto Audrie St. and left towards the resort entrance.

For luxury vacations in Las Vegas:

The Wynne Las Vegas is a dazzling luxurious resort, featuring a full casino, dozens of boutiques and matchlessly designed amenities. The hotel doesn’t offer a free shuttle service, but is located directly on the Strip, and is easily reachable (around 12 minutes) from McCarran International via cab or hired car.

The Four Seasons in Mandalay Bay offers glorious views of the surrounding desert mountains from chic, Art-Deco suites. Alongside stellar on-site restaurants, guests can enjoy tailored treatments in the Forbes Five Star Spa. Limo, taxi and rental car services are available for airport transfers (around 12 minutes away) and beyond.

For budget vacations in Las Vegas:

The Mardi Gras Hotel and Casino is located 5 minutes from the Monorail and offers free shuttles to the Strip and airport transfers (between 7am and 10pm). It also offers free service level parking and a friendly full-service bar and restaurant. From the airport, simply head north on Paradise Road for 2.3 miles. The hotel is on the right.

The Circus Circus Hotel, Casino, and Theme Park is just 5 minutes’ drive from the Convention Center and offers free entertainment nightly. The hotel is just 8 minutes away from the airport by cab, or half an hour way via line 108 bus.

Planning checklist, more resources, weather in las vegas in october – how hot is vegas in october.

  • Average Temp in Las Vegas in August: high of 83° F, low of 46° F
  • Rainfall: 0.3 inches
  • Humidity: 29%

October is when it’s finally fall- ish  (not that we need sweaters)! We get some cooler days in September, but it’s much more consistent in October. That said, don’t be surprised if you find yourself in a heatwave in October.

This month will also bring you better hotel deals as long as you avoid any large events or conferences.

October is the best month to visit for mild weather to enjoy  indoor  and  outdoor activities . We tell all our friends to wait until October to visit for hiking and November for climbing.

Are Vegas pools open in October?

The pool season generally goes from March to October, although some hotel pools stay open year-round (Caesars, Wynn, Aria, and Bellagio). As locals, though, we don’t get in our pool unless it’s been over 100 degrees for several days. Yes, we do get used to the hot weather, and now everywhere else is cold.

Tips for Visiting Las Vegas in October

  • Buy tickets early  since popular shows and events sell out.
  • Save money  by getting an  All-Inclusive or Explorer Pass  if you plan on visiting multiple attractions.
  • Read all the fine print  before heading to a show or event since some don’t allow cameras and others don’t allow bags.
  • Bring layers  because it’s still warm during the day but will be cool at night. Also, inside the casinos, they are always pumping the AC.
  • Sunscreen  is important if you’ll be outside since it’s mostly exposed.
  • Arrive early.  It takes longer than anticipated to get from one spot part of the strip to another. Give yourself plenty of time to find your way around. Casinos are meant to be a maze.
  • Want to know  what to wear to the airport ? These are  our ideal airport outfits .

Is October a Good Time to Visit Las Vegas?

If you’re mostly going to be indoors on the Strip, visit any time of the year since the temperature won’t matter.

For outdoor activities like hiking and climbing, you should visit between November and March. But if you’re here for the pool parties and lake life, this is the time!

In our opinion, we like leaving Vegas during July and August, but you do you!

  • Get comprehensive insurance for your trip.
  • Download these helpful language apps .
  • Find a great deal on Las Vegas hotels .
  • Arrange a rental car for your trip.
  • Book a tour for your visit.
  • Get airport lounge access .
  • Buy a travel charger to keep your devices charged.
  • Get a new backpack for your trip.
  • Buy a Las Vegas travel guide .

The Costco Traveler Blog

Vegas on a budget: 5 things to do for free, finding value at costco travel, members tell all: costco member hotel reviews, more about las vegas.

Las Vegas is a world of imagination. Just close your eyes and think about anything, and the odds are in your favor that you'll find it in Las Vegas. I mean, in only four miles of real estate, you can see relics from all parts of the world, like ancient Egypt, modern-day Venice, the streets of Paris, and the New York skyline. If that seems too kitschy, don't worry, there are plenty of elaborate resorts with non-stop gaming and over-the-top entertainment waiting to greet you. Where else in the world does a wonderland like this exist? Nowhere. But. Vegas.

The atmosphere of Las Vegas is something that you almost have to experience to understand fully. It's the ringing of chimes as a guest just hit the jackpot, the thumping bass from the club, the smell of unique and eclectic delicacies waiting to be tasted, and it's people-watching like nothing you've seen before. It's a never-ending source of irony and improbability where you can turn a chip and a chair into a million dollars.

For each visitor, Las Vegas is going to present a unique experience. It's like an equation where you + more = more of you: more chances to explore your personality, more opportunities to experiment with new ideas, and more thrills to discover around every corner. It's that reason alone that the sentiment "what happens here, stays here" is shared by so many visitors.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.
  • For complete and current safety and security information, including travelers' tips, public announcements, travel advisories and more, please visit the website of the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.gov.
  • December through February: 60° to 66° (Winter)
  • March through May: 72° to 90° (Spring)
  • June through August: 102° to 104° (Summer)
  • September through November: 96° to 70° (Autumn)

The Vegas climate's bark is worse than its bite. Sure, summer highs hover around 100°F, but with no humidity and ever-present air-conditioning, you'll be comfortable as long as you have water on hand. Even the warmer months (June-September) are entirely bearable if you hydrate. Luckily, with 300 days of sunshine a year, the chances of a rain-out are slim. On the other hand, nights can be chilly between late fall and early spring, so bring a sweater or windbreaker for your evening strolls beneath the neon-bathed skies. Las Vegas doesn't have a high or low season by the standard definition, but you'll find it the least crowded between November and January. Hotels are at their fullest July through October. Specific events—New Year's Eve, spring break, major conventions, sporting events—draw big crowds, so plan accordingly.

Things to Do in Las Vegas in October

Hiking in Valley of Fire near Las Vegas

There are so many fun attractions to explore with your family in Las Vegas. From taking in the wonders of the gorgeous hotels to being star-struck by the lights and glamour of the strip, there’s so much to see and enjoy, and don’t forget the delicious food !

It took us a few trips to discover it, but we love the Neon Museum ! It’s a bit off the beaten track, but definitely, a fun spot to check out with adults and kids alike.

Due to its subtropical desert climate, Las Vegas is a fantastic place to visit year-round. Sure, summer travelers are known to spend countless hours in hotel pools, but contrary to what you might think, there are so many fun things to do in Las Vegas during winter .

Checking out Valley of Fire or Red Rock Canyon is a much more comfortable experience in the cooler months of the year. There are some amazing Valley of Fire hikes you won’t want to miss when visiting Las Vegas in October!

If you would prefer to visit Red Rock Canyon, there are lots of great tours . If you don’t have your own transportation, some of these tours include transportation from many of the downtown hotels.

Hiking to the Fire Wave in Valley of Fire near Las Vegas in October

There are so many fun attractions on the strip, but exploring the state park and conservation area is actually one of our favorite things to do with kids in Las Vegas . A quick visit out of town to check out Seven Magic Mountains is another sure bet for family fun in Las Vegas in October!

Las Vegas Day Trips

Visiting the Hoover Dam near Las Vegas

The Hoover Dam is about 45 minutes west of Las Vegas and is considered one of the industrial wonders of the world. Families are welcome to travel to and explore the dam on their own, but we definitely recommend taking a Hoover Dam tour .

During our last visit to Las Vegas, we went down into the dam on a tour, and it was so much fun. It was so interesting to learn more about the history of creating the dam and seeing the big generators.

The tours are super convenient. Many of them pick guests up from Las Vegas area hotels and drive them to the dam.

Antelope Canyon

Walking through Antelope Canyon

If you’re looking for an excuse to get out of town during your visit to Las Vegas, consider an Antelope Canyon from Las Vegas Tour . Antelope Canyon is about four and a half hours outside of Las Vegas. Travelers can choose from different Lower Antelope Canyon tours , including Antelope Canyon X or even an Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend Day Trip .

Travelers who wish to make the road trip from Las Vegas to Antelope Canyon and nearby Horseshoe Bend might find themselves asking, can you see Antelope Canyon without a tour? You can drive yourself to the entrance of the canyon, but you will need to book a tour to go in because it is on protected Navajo Land.

If you decide to stay in the Antelope Canyon area instead of making the long trek back to Vegas all in one day, you can be sure your family will stay in comfort. There are some amazing hotels near Antelope Canyon .

▶ BOOK Antelope Canyon Tour

The Grand Canyon

South Rim of the Grand Canyon

Another fun day trip destination from Las Vegas is the Grand Canyon. There are some amazing things to do at the South Rim Grand Canyon , and it’s a really enjoyable place to visit with family. We are always blown away by how beautiful it is every time we visit.

Best of all, there are some phenomenal places to stay near the Grand Canyon too, just in case you decide to stay overnight! If you are short on time, you can definitely see the Grand Canyon in one day, but if you can stay overnight, you can watch a spectacular sunrise. Sunrise and sunset are our favorite times to visit the Grand Canyon.

If you want a truly memorable and unique way of experiencing the Grand Canyon, check out some of the Las Vegas helicopter tours that visit the Grand Canyon.

FY 2025 per diem highlights

We establish the per diem rates for the continental United States (CONUS), which includes the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia. Federal agencies use the per diem rates to reimburse their employees for subsistence expenses incurred while on official travel.

Federal per diem rates consist of a maximum lodging allowance component and a meals and incidental expenses (M&IE) component. The standard rate of $178 ($110 lodging, $68 M&IE) applies to most of CONUS. For fiscal year (FY) 2025, there are 296 non-standard areas (NSAs) that have per diem rates higher than the standard rate.

Since FY 2005, we have based the maximum lodging allowances on average daily rate (ADR) data. ADR is a widely accepted lodging industry measure derived from a property’s room rental revenue divided by the number of rooms rented. This calculation provides us with the average rate in an area. For more information about how lodging per diem rates are determined, visit Factors influencing lodging rates .

We remind agencies that the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) allows for actual expense reimbursement when per diem rates are insufficient to meet necessary expenses. Please see FTR § § 301-11.300 through 11.306 for more information.

FY 2025 results

The standard CONUS lodging rate increased from $107 to $110. The M&IE rate tiers were revised for FY 2025; they were last revised in FY 2022. The standard M&IE rate increased from $59 to $68, and the M&IE rate tiers for non-standard areas increased from $59-$79 to $68-$92.

The following locations that were NSAs (or part of an established NSA) in FY 2024 moved into the standard CONUS rate category:

  • Ft. Wayne, IN (Allen County)
  • Canton, OH (Stark County)
  • Mentor, OH (Lake County)
  • East Greenwich / Warwick, RI (Kent County)
  • Waco, TX (McLennan County)
  • Wisconsin Dells, WI (Columbia County)

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

Taking a trip this fall? Here's the one travel tip you should follow

There's one thing Jerry Slaff won't do when he travels to Edinburgh and Dublin this fall: complain.

He's hoping to avoid summer tourists by going in October.

But if he doesn't – if he gets stuck in a long line or has to fight the crowds at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery – he'll stay quiet. Slaff, a playwright from Rockville, Maryland, figures that travelers did plenty of griping this summer and people are tired of it. Also, complaining doesn't change anything. So why bother?

Check out Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

That's not the only thing smart travelers aren't doing this fall. They're avoiding some popular destinations, as well as shying away from ambitious itineraries and last-minute decisions about their trips. But there is one thing everyone must avoid this fall – and I'll tell you in a second.

Don't be a casualty: Hotels are returning fire in the 'junk fee' war

What's the outlook for fall travel?

Travel is still expensive and chaotic but this fall travelers will see a little relief compared to summer. A new survey by travel insurance company Faye suggests 68% of American travelers plan to go somewhere during the upcoming fall and winter season, down 3% from last year. And half of them plan to leave the country, which is a continuation of a travel trend that started earlier this year.

Here's what they can expect:

  • Airfares are mixed for fall travelers. Domestic ticket prices are down 11% compared to this time last year, to an average round-trip fare of $257, according to the airfare app Hopper. If you're flying to Europe, they're down only 2% ($813 round-trip), but if you're headed to Asia, ticket prices are up 4% from last fall ($1,417).
  • Hotel rates have slipped but remain higher than last fall. The average room rate is $183, up 11% compared to this time in 2022, but down from summer highs of over $200 per night, said Hopper.
  • Car rental rates are falling. Preliminary booking data shows a 15% decline in the average car rental rate compared with last fall, said Mark Mannell, CEO of CarRentalSavers.com . But the lines at the counter may stay. "Agencies are still understaffed, and we have seen some long lines at locations that serve a lot of international travelers," warned Mannell.

Overall, that's good news. And there's more: Travelers like Slaff, who are headed to Europe, won't have to worry about paying the $7 fee to be charged by the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). It's been postponed to early 2024.

So it's a much better time to travel than this hyper-busy summer, as I explain in my free guide to fall travel . But what should you not do when you travel this autumn?

Visit a summer destination

Some travelers try to outsmart the seasonal crowds by booking a traditional summer destination, like a beach, during the fall. Bad idea. "A lot of people go to places like the Greek Islands and Amalfi Coast in October, when the prices reduce significantly," said George Morgan-Grenville, CEO of Red Savannah , a tour operator. "But what they often don’t realize is that the tourist infrastructure is being dismantled for the winter. Many or all of the restaurants can be shut, beach clubs have closed, and the towns and villages are going on vacation themselves."

Wait to book

Travelers assume that because it's the off-season, they'll be able to wait until the last minute to book. But with demand still high, this is not the fall to try that, said experts like Duncan Greenfield-Turk, chief travel designer at Global Travel Moments . "Don't procrastinate," he said. "Availability may be limited during this vibrant travel season." That's particularly true of some of the more popular tourist destinations in France, Greece, Italy and Portugal.

Schedule a tight connection

Think all of our summer air travel troubles are over? Not so, said Bob Bacheler, the managing director of Flying Angels , a medical transport company. Airlines are not out of the woods, and with the holiday travel season approaching, it's better to play it safe. Bacheler pointed out that on average, a quarter of flights experience a delay. So there's a reasonably good chance you'll get delayed if you're flying. "Any connection with less than one hour is asking for trouble," he said.

Vacation in a popular tourist attraction

I know, I know. You put off your summer vacations because you wanted to see the Colosseum in Rome or climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower. But you might want to wait a little bit longer, said Nathan Heinrich, host of the I'm Moving To Italy! Podcast. "Areas that usually only fill to capacity during the summer months are expected to be overbooked this fall as well," he said. He's telling his listeners to head for less crowded places like Piemonte or the Prosecco Hills of northern Italy.

Here's the one thing you absolutely must not do when you travel this fall

Most importantly, don't overlook your paperwork. Yeah, it sounds boring, but believe me, it is anything but that when you have a paperwork problem.

Just last week, my sons and I were almost denied entry into Vietnam. My son had filled out his visa incorrectly – he said his port of entry was Ho Chi Minh City instead of Da Nang – and they nearly turned us away at the border.

'People became more entitled': Enough with bad tourists ruining everyone's experience

No one likes a seat kicker: Stop touching the airplane seat in front of you

Truth is, no one wants to think about paperwork until they have to. And by then it's often too late. Whether it's COVID test requirements on a cruise or your passport renewal, paperwork has never been more important. The State Department currently takes 10 to 13 weeks to process a new passport . That means if you don't have a valid passport by Labor Day, your fall trip just became a winter trip.

"Avoid waiting until the last minute to renew your passport," said David Alwadish, CEO of ItsEasy Passport & Visa Services . Also, bear in mind that for many popular fall destinations, you need at least six months of validity on your passport in order to get into the country.

So check your paperwork, and then recheck it. Otherwise, you could end up like me: waiting nervously in a line at customs in Da Nang, and hoping that the customs agent is feeling generous.

Fortunately, she was.

Hit the road or the trail to view vibrant fall leaves across America.

The Top Places to See Fall Foliage

There's no other time of year quite like fall. Brisk, cool mornings give way to sun-warmed afternoons, and the dropping temperatures create a kaleidoscope of colors as the leaves change before winter sets in. The displays of color are different across the U.S., but they're all brilliant when leaf-peeping season is at its peak.

Peak leaf season varies by region and by year, depending on the weather, so it's best to check with local sources before you go. Many top destinations to view fall's splendor have leaf and foliage maps and trackers so you can follow the local predictions and current conditions – and arrive just in time for the best of the season. Some of these destinations will be familiar, while others are lesser-known locales where you can capture and embrace fall's beauty.

So, pack your jacket and jeans, then grab your camera to capture one of nature's best spectacle.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Boardwalk through a colorful forest at Acadia National Park, Maine, in the fall.

Acadia National Park covers nearly 50,000 acres along the rocky coast of Maine. Located about 160 miles northeast of Portland, the park boasts the diverse natural beauty of the Atlantic shoreline, including majestic mountains. Peak leaf season in Acadia traditionally falls in the middle of October. This is when you'll see the vibrant displays of oranges, reds and yellows, especially along the Acadia All-American Road, one of the best scenic drives to view the fall colors.

While visiting Acadia , plan to stay at the nearby coastal town of Bar Harbor , considered to be the gateway to the park. Bar Harbor Inn & Spa , situated along picturesque Frenchman Bay, is an outstanding choice for an overnight stay: The historic property offers impressive views of the water as well as Maine's Porcupine Islands. While in town, you can take a whale watching tour and treat yourself to a traditional lobster dinner at Beal's Lobster Pier.

The 34-mile McKenzie River Scenic Byway extends from the vineyards of the Willamette Valley to the forests of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon , treating travelers and road-trippers to views of some of the Pacific Northwest's most beautiful landscapes. Plan your visit for peak season when the golds and reds are most vibrant, usually in mid-to-late October.

The McKenzie River boasts some of the best fly-fishing in Oregon, so anglers will want to cast off for native redside rainbow and cutthroat trout along the way. Other highlights include stops at local farm stands and at Goodpasture Bridge in Vida, which is the state's second-longest covered bridge. For an extended romantic getaway that includes days spent fly-fishing, whitewater rafting and hiking to waterfalls, make reservations at the Eagle Rock Lodge, a bed-and-breakfast for couples in Vida.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

The leaves begin changing at the end of September, but peak season starts around mid-October. You can expect to see colors ranging from golden yellows to vivid oranges to deep reds. If you're up for a hike, take the Stony Ledge trail from the Williamstown side of Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts at nearly 3,500 feet. This route offers one of the best viewing points of the foliage from midway up the mountain.

Back on the ground, the Berkshires feature world-class arts and entertainment offerings along with a deep-rooted food culture with many locally focused dining options. You can also explore the apple orchards and hops farms along the Berkshire Farm & Table Beer & Cider Trail. For accommodations in the Berkshires , splurge on a stay at The Williams Inn, an upscale hotel with a contemporary design that emulates local farmhouse architecture.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Rural countryside and fall forests on rolling hills in Albemarle County, Virginia.

Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia, Charlottesville offers spectacular scenery accentuated by fall's vivid hues. Mid-to-late October is when you'll usually see the most dazzling red, orange and yellow leaves, but the colors can linger into early November, depending on the weather. Some of the best viewing spots with scenic overlooks are along the neighboring Blue Ridge Parkway and the connecting Skyline Drive in nearby Shenandoah National Park .

When you're not leaf peeping, plan to visit Thomas Jefferson's Monticello: the former home, gardens and grounds of the third U.S. president. Travel along the Monticello Wine Trail to sample some of Virginia's award-winning vintages at wineries such as Michael Shaps Wineworks, Barboursville Vineyards and Jefferson Vineyards. In the evenings, travelers can unwind over a seasonally inspired dinner at Marigold by Jean-Georges before settling in at the beautiful luxury property Keswick Hall.

The nearly 90-mile route from the town of Red Wing to La Crescent on U.S. Route 61 also features scenic overlooks, including two must-see locations at Great River Bluffs and Frontenac state parks. This drive along the Mississippi River – part of the 3,000-mile Great River Road, which begins in Minnesota and runs south through 10 states to conclude in Louisiana – celebrates peak fall colors from late September to mid-October.

As you take in the brilliant hues of russet, red and gold along the ride, be sure to stop for an afternoon snack at a roadside apple stand. Bird lovers may be eager to see the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota. While in this town, grab dinner and a beer before spending the night at Turning Waters Bed, Breakfast and Brewery. Further down the road, don't miss the town of Winona, home to the small but impressive collection of works that explore the human relationship with water at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.

Colorful autumn hills near Boreas Pass in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Situated at 9,600 feet above sea level in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge is one of the first places in Colorado to witness fall's brilliant changing of the leaves. While the aspen trees' golds, reds and oranges usually peak by late September, the season can linger into early October. For optimal leaf viewing, plan to drive the 22-mile Boreas Pass: This route begins in Como and heads north to Breckenridge.

While visiting, enjoy brisk fall days hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding or fly-fishing surrounded by the beauty of the Rockies. If you're in town in mid-September, don your best alpine gear and attend the festivities at Breckenridge Oktoberfest. For an extended stay with a view, reserve accommodations at The Lodge at Breckenridge . This property nestled atop a forested cliff is regarded as one of the world's highest-altitude hotels at 10,200 feet.

Hudson, New York

Colorful fall foliage on the banks of the Hudson River in New York.

Nestled in the Hudson River Valley in Columbia County, around 120 miles north of New York City , Hudson is a small town that offers a distinct food, arts and farming culture. There's also a unique history to explore, especially when it comes to architecture: Known as a "dictionary of architectural history," Hudson boasts many well-preserved buildings from almost every major period in America. The area's bounty of trees produce brilliant red, orange and gold hues beginning at the end of September, with peak viewing time around mid-to-late October.

For a unique way to see the foliage, get a designated driver and plan a road trip around the Hudson Valley Wine and Craft Beverage Map, which features more than 100 wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries. After the drive, browse the town's boutiques and antique shops before checking into The Hudson Whaler Hotel, a beautifully restored property in the heart of downtown.

If you'd prefer to cruise the Hudson River Valley to see the fall foliage, American Cruise Lines offers summer and fall Hudson River cruise itineraries. The round-trip sailings from New York City include five stops in New York state: Catskill, Albany, Hyde Park, West Point and the town of Sleepy Hollow, which is the home of Ichabod Crane and the legendary tale of his flight from the headless horseman.

Willamette Valley, Oregon

Rows of grapevines in Willamette Valley during the fall.

Fall is harvest season in the Willamette Valley and one of the best times to visit the renowned wine region. The days are sunny and cool during peak foliage, which typically falls around mid-October. Leaf peepers can expect to see brilliant hues of yellow, orange and red against the deep green shade of the evergreen Douglas fir – the state tree of Oregon. Willamette Valley is home to more than 700 wineries, with many producing internationally acclaimed vintages, so you may want to hire a private guide to craft your itinerary around the best wines and the best views.

McMinnville is situated in the heart of wine country and is a perfect base for exploring the region. The historic downtown offers plenty of non-wine fun with quirky shops and art galleries and restaurants featuring locally sourced and award-winning cuisine – including ƍkta, which is helmed by Michelin-starred chef Matthew Lightner. For an overnight stay, reserve accommodations at the luxury boutique Atticus Hotel. The 36-room hotel features seven distinct room categories, including the Luxury Bunkhouse that's perfect for a getaway with friends in Oregon's wine country.

Stowe, Vermont

Iconic New England church in Stowe, Vermont, during the fall.

Nestled at the base of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak, Stowe is one of the most picturesque villages in New England. It's also one of the best places to view the annual fall spectacle, with colors changing from early September through the end of October. Vermont is around 80% forested and boasts plenty of sugar maples, so autumn visitors can admire vibrant displays of red, gold and yellow leaves across the state. One of the prettiest drives to see the foliage is along the Smugglers' Notch Pass through the Green Mountains in Smugglers' Notch State Park.

If you're planning for several days of leaf-peeping activities, a room at the Austrian-inspired Trapp Family Lodge can be your home base while you go horseback riding, rent a canoe or hop on the seasonal Stowe Gondola SkyRide to the summit of Mount Mansfield for unparalleled views. Back in town, check out local breweries like The Alchemist or von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall.

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Cog railway train on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire climbing through autumn foliage.

Set in the White Mountains of New Hampshire , Bretton Woods is one of the top destinations in the state to view fall foliage. Leaf-peeping season begins in mid-September and continues through late October – this is when the most vibrant yellows, oranges, reds and even purples will paint the surrounding mountains. Due to the many tree species, it can be hard to predict peak foliage in this area, but you'll likely have the most luck around the second week of October.

To enjoy the spectacle for several days, make reservations at the Omni Mount Washington Resort . This historic property sits at the base of the highest peak in the Northeast, giving guests a front-row seat to the show. During your stay, dash through the treetops on a zip line canopy tour, enjoy a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride or take a thrilling trip on the Mount Washington Cog Railway. You may also opt to take in the sights on a gondola ride and have lunch atop the mountain. Back on the ground, book a signature spa treatment and relax with expansive views of the Presidential Range, Crawford Notch and Mount Washington from the therapy rooms.

Northwoods, Wisconsin

Fall colors reflected in the water of a northern Wisconsin lake with an early morning mist hovering over the water.

The Northwoods of Wisconsin comprises five counties boasting thousands of lakes and vast forests perfect for fall leaf-peeping adventures. The northern part of the state offers some of the best foliage viewing in Wisconsin, typically between mid-September and early October, when you can see vibrant shades of orange, red, yellow and purple. If you want to experience the local art scene – and take in the autumn views – the Northwoods Art Tour takes place every fall in October. Visitors can stop at dozens of unique sites featuring artisan jewelry, pottery, woodwork, glass pieces, sculpting, painting and more throughout the Northwoods.

Stop for a few days in Boulder Junction to see more of the area and take in some of the outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, kayaking and more. Located in Vilas County, the charming town is home to hundreds of biking and hiking trails and nearly as many lakes. You'll also find cute local shops to peruse and casual restaurants downtown and on Main Street. Take your pick of rustic cabin-style accommodations and private rentals or reserve a room at one of the motor lodges in town: Boulder Bear or Boulder Junction.

Highlands, North Carolina

Fall colors at Cullasaja Falls in Southwestern North Carolina.

This picturesque mountain town sits at more than 4,100 feet in elevation on the Highlands Plateau in the Nantahala National Forest. Highlands is also located in a temperate rainforest, so the vegetation is lush and there are many waterfalls, rivers and lakes to explore in and around the area. Leaf-peeping season typically begins in mid-October, when you'll see leaves starting to turn bright yellow and orange, as well as deeper hues of red, rust and even purple.

There are many active outdoor activities to enjoy in this region, such as hiking, fly-fishing and golfing, but the community also has a vibrant cultural arts scene. During your visit, check out the exhibits at The Bascom (a visual arts center), as well as events at the Highlands Performing Arts Center and the new Mountain Theater Company. While in town, reserve accommodations at Old Edwards Inn and Spa . This beautiful Relais & ChĂąteaux property, located in the heart of Highlands, puts visitors within walking distance of the many restaurants and boutiques located on Main Street.

Whidbey Island, Washington

View of Deer Lagoon and neighboring farms on Whidbey Island, Washington, on a cloudy day.

The 55-mile Whidbey Isle Scenic Way is one of the driving routes along Puget Sound in what's known as "Washington's ultimate road trip": the Cascade Loop. Peak color along the loop typically occurs between late September to mid-October with brilliant shades of gold, orange, and red – and you'll have plenty of opportunities for leaf peeping with all the farms, parks, mountains and wineries along the way. The scenic drive on Whidbey Island begins as you cross over historic Deception Pass Bridge and head south toward the largest town on the island, Oak Harbor. This coastal city is home to Deception Pass State Park and many Garry white oak trees that are native to the Pacific Coast.

In Coupeville, the second-oldest town in the state, more than 100 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stop for photos at Fort Casey State Park and the Admiralty Head Lighthouse before feasting on local Penn Cove mussels at one of the waterfront restaurants. Other highlights on the drive include Greenbank Farm, where you can sample local wines and cheeses surrounded by the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade Range, as well as the town of Langley, known as the "Village by the Sea." This charming artsy community sits atop a bluff overlooking the Saratoga Passage and the Cascade Mountains.

Letchworth State Park, New York

Aerial of Middle Falls at Letchworth State Park in New York during the fall.

Letchworth State Park, fondly known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is home to some of the most striking fall foliage views in the U.S. The park's 14,300-plus acres of lush forest usually hit their peak in early-to-mid-October, when leaf peepers will be treated to yellow, orange and red foliage framing the magnificent Genesee Gorge and Genesee River. Explore this unique setting on miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, including the park's new Autism Nature Trail, a milelong hiking loop with marked sensory stations. You can also take to the skies in a hot air balloon with Balloons Over Letchworth, the only company that launches from inside the gorge.

While you're visiting Letchworth State Park, be sure to check out the surrounding Wyoming and Livingston counties for fun fall activities. You can soak in the views in Wyoming County with a Fall Foliage Train Ride on the Arcade & Attica Railroad, or head to Livingston for a free ranger-led walking tour of the Mount Morris Dam. When you're ready to relax, explore local craft beer, wine, cider and spirits along the LivCo Libation Loop. Stay the night in the heart of Letchworth State Park at the Glen Iris Inn, which offers convenient access to both counties and overlooks Middle Falls on the Genesee River.

Tunnel of Trees, Upper Peninsula of Michigan

"Tunnel Road" above Houghton, Michigan, dips and twists between hardwoods turning red, orange and gold.

Known as the Tunnel of Trees, this 20-mile scenic route follows the historic Michigan 119 highway between Harbor Springs and Cross Village. The area's canopies of golds, oranges, yellows and crimsons are on display typically from late September to mid-October. A few highlights for travelers include visiting the picturesque waterfront resort town of Harbor Springs and sampling authentic Polish cuisine at the iconic Legs Inn restaurant in Cross Village.

For overnight lodging, plan to stay at The Highlands, a Boyne Resort in Harbor Springs. This property offers many outdoor activities, including zip lining, horseback riding, biking and swimming. While here, reserve a seat on the Heather Express chairlift: This excursion to the top of the mountain affords incredible views of Little Traverse Bay, Harbor Springs and the area's beautiful fall foliage.

North Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

Dock outside of Tahoe City near Commons Beach in North Lake Tahoe during the fall.

North Lake Tahoe, which unfurls across both California and Nevada, is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, so there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure, from kayaking and paddleboarding to boating and relaxing on the area's many beaches. When it comes to viewing fall's splendor, hundreds of biking and hiking trails with 10-plus different species of native trees show off the red, orange and yellow foliage.

The best time to see the colorful leaves is from about mid-September to late October, especially at the top leaf-peeping locales: Tahoe Meadows, Ellis Peak, Mount Rose Summit and Sugar Pine Point State Park. For a memorable getaway, book accommodations at the Everline Resort & Spa at the base of Olympic Valley. Amenities at this luxury resort include a golf course with a view, a luxurious spa and various outdoor experiences, such as guided fly-fishing trips, hiking and backpacking.

The Ozarks, Arkansas

Twin Falls in Arkansas during the colorful fall season.

Situated in the northern part of Arkansas , the Ozark Mountains are the perfect destination to explore the outdoors and marvel at autumn's palette of bright golds, reds and oranges. The transformation typically begins around the second week of October, and peak colors appear by late October. One of the top spots to view the foliage is in the Buffalo National River area around the small town of Ponca. This beautiful wilderness destination in the mountains offers the opportunity to disconnect and get away from it all.

While here, take time to hike or float down the river – all the while keeping an eye out for wild elk. Fall is when the bulls are battling to become king of the herd, so they're especially active during this time of year. Plan to reserve one of the cabins in the mountains above Ponca. Vantage points from these properties yield incredible stargazing opportunities, as well as memorable sunrise and sunset views.

Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway, Maryland

Old rustic covered bridge in the Maryland countryside during the fall.

The roughly 40-mile scenic drive from Emmitsburg to Point of Rocks runs along U.S. Route 15 in Maryland . Known as "hallowed ground" and considered sacred by some, this long stretch of road highlights significant Civil War sites and pristine natural areas, including Catoctin Mountain Park, home to the presidential residence Camp David. The best time to make the journey to view the foliage on the Maryland route is between late September and early November, with peak season around mid-October.

One not-to-be-missed detour is a stop to see the 78-foot waterfall and gorge in Cunningham Falls State Park. If you're after a challenging hike with great views, travelers say Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson can't be missed. Afterward, spend time exploring the shops, art galleries, distilleries, breweries and restaurants in the historic city of Frederick. You can book an overnight stay at one of the charming local B&Bs, such as 10 Clarke. If you're up for more fall festivities, visit nearby Gaver Farm in Mount Airy, whose Fall Fun Fest has a corn maze and more than 65 attractions, including a zip line, a chicken show, jumping pillows and giant slides.

Adirondacks, New York

Houses around Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains, New York, during the fall.

The Adirondacks offer leaf peepers 10 distinct regional destinations covering more than 6 million acres in the northeast corner of New York state. Adventurers can head to the Lake Placid region in late September and early October to hike the Adirondack High Peaks, which offer the best mountain vistas during peak fall foliage. While you're in the region, be sure to visit the Olympic Jumping Complex. Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the ski jumps for a bird's-eye view of the Adirondacks before heading back down on a zip line.

In the first two weeks of October, you'll find peak leaf peeping around Lake George, a popular vacation spot with 109 miles of shoreline and 300-plus islands. Hike nearby Prospect Mountain for a breathtaking view overlooking the lake's beautiful blue waters and the vibrant yellows, oranges and reds of the surrounding forest. For an authentic Adirondack stay without sacrificing resort luxuries, book a vacation rental at The Lodges at Cresthaven. Located on the shores of Lake George, this resort property offers a host of amenities along with Adirondack decor and panoramic views of the lake.

Anchorage to Kenai, Alaska

Yellow flowers along the ocean on Seward Highway in Anchorage, Alaska, with snowy mountains in the background.

The epic landscapes of Alaska are awash with vibrant reds, purples, yellows and oranges – and even snow-capped mountaintops – from late August through September as fall arrives in The Great Land. The autumn colors across the state's vast wilderness, forests and tundra change quickly as winter approaches, beginning in mid-to-late August in the Arctic regions and lasting as late as October in southern areas like Tongass National Forest.

This roughly 160-mile drive on the Seward and Sterling highways from Anchorage to Kenai travels along two National Scenic Byways. You'll find many vantage points along the way to take in the jaw-dropping views and capture photos. The first 50 miles of Seward Highway follow the Chugach Mountains and the shoreline of Turnagain Arm, where you may catch a glimpse of Dall sheep, beluga whales and eagles. From Tern Lake to Skilak Lake on Sterling Highway, you won't want to miss the sight of the Kenai River's teal glacial waters set against the orange and yellow leaves.

For a side trip en route, visitors can plan to stay in one of the recently refreshed Signature Rooms at the beautiful Alyeska Resort, about 40 miles southeast of Anchorage. Indulge in a day at the Alyeska Nordic Spa and, if you visit by mid-September, take a ride on the aerial tramway to the top of Mount Alyeska for panoramic views from above. Be sure to save up enough energy to chase the aurora borealis in the wee morning hours, as the northern lights dance across the night sky from mid-August to mid-April in Alaska .

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

Aerial of Highway 476 in the Appalachian Mountains near Lehighton, Poconos Region, Pennsylvania, in the fall.

One of the best ways to view the Pocono Mountains' vibrant fall hues of reds, yellows, oranges and purples is with a scenic drive along U.S. Route 6 in Pennsylvania. This road meanders through charming towns like Milford, Hawley and Honesdale, where you can take in autumn festivities that include the Hawley Harvest Hoedown and Honesdale's Harvest and Heritage Days. Another optimal viewing spot for the foliage is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area with its 70,000 acres of forests and wetlands, the two tallest waterfalls in the state, and more than 150 miles of hiking trails.

The peak season for vibrant leaves in the Poconos depends on the region (north or south) and the progression of temperatures in the fall, but you can typically expect the best viewing from mid-September through the peak season in early-to-mid-October. For up-to-the-minute information, check the fall foliage forecast on the Poconos Mountain website . After a busy day of exploring, The French Manor Inn and Spa is the perfect place to kick back, relax and admire even more of autumn's beauty. This luxury property is perched atop Huckleberry Mountain in Newfoundland, offering spectacular views of the kaleidoscope of leaf colors.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Flowers among fall colors at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington.

The majesty of Mount Rainier, with its summit reaching 14,410 feet above sea level, is even more breathtaking surrounded by fall's vibrant colors. While you can see the peak from miles around, a drive through Mount Rainier National Park can bring you up-close viewing of the spectacle. Top leaf-peeping areas include the White Pass Scenic Byway to Chinook Pass via Bethel Ridge – if you have a high-clearance vehicle. Visitors may consider making a side trip to Cash Prairie before venturing on to Timberwolf Mountain. Peak season to capture the brilliant crimsons, ambers and golds can vary, but it typically occurs between mid-October through early November.

While in the park, enjoy other favorite fall activities such as foraging for local mushrooms – chanterelles, hen-of-the-woods and matsutake, for example. You can also book an early-morning Elk Bugling Tour at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park to see the Roosevelt elk sparring during their "rut," or breeding season. For rustic accommodations to enjoy the great outdoors while visiting the park, reserve a cabin or campsite at Mounthaven Resort.

North Conway, New Hampshire

Church and other buildings in North Conway, New Hampshire, at sunset during the fall.

For prime autumn foliage in one of the best small towns for an adventure, head up to North Conway in New Hampshire . Located roughly 85 miles north of Portsmouth, this small town is encompassed by the White Mountain National Forest and home to Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast. With dozens of foot hike options through the surrounding 700,000 acres of protected forest, there's no shortage of leaf-peeping opportunities. Peak colors typically paint the landscape with vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow from the end of September into the first two weeks of October.

A ride along the Kancamagus Highway – affectionately called "The Kanc" by locals – is a must-do. The 34-mile scenic drive will immerse you in a fall wonderland as it winds through the New Hampshire countryside, but make sure to fill your tank before you set off, as there are no gas stations or stores along the highway.

While you're in the area, don't forget to indulge in North Conway's other unique activities. Enjoy the perks of tax-free shopping at Settlers Green Outlet Village or grab a chairlift ride at Cranmore Mountain Resort. If you decide to hop aboard the historic Conway Scenic Railroad, experience 360-degree views of the fall foliage in a deluxe dome car on the 1950s-era transcontinental streamlined train. When you're ready to settle in for the night, the Cranmore Inn, a boutique inn located in the center of town, blends modern amenities with historical charm.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

Morning fog over mountain ridges in Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park encompasses more than 522,400 acres across the states of North Carolina and Tennessee. The Smokies are known for their incredible display of autumn hues with about 100 species of native trees. At 4,000 feet in elevation and above, leaf peepers can expect to see intense shades of red, orange and brown during peak season, which is typically around early-to-mid-October. Lower-elevation towns like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg will experience peak color around mid-October to early November.

The highest summit in Great Smoky Mountains National Park , Clingmans Dome, sits at 6,643 feet and offers one of the best views of the foliage, with panoramic vistas from a 54-foot observation tower. The 11-mile one-way loop at Cades Cove (accessible from the nearby town of Townsend, Tennessee) is another top spot for seeing the colorful display in the park. This scenic valley features hiking trails, historic homesites, a visitor center, a campground, a riding stable and a picnic area.

Clingmans Dome and Cades Cove can be very busy with tourists in the fall, so another option is to take a drive on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, which is a round-trip scenic route from downtown Gatlinburg. You can also head out on one of the many hiking trails in the park to see Mother Nature's spectacle. If you're planning to stay a few days to explore the park and the nearby towns, make reservations at the Historic Rocky Waters Inn, A Small Luxury Hotel in Gatlinburg. The property also offers curated guided experiences inside and outside the park for its guests.
