UAE visa on arrival for Indians with US visa, Green Card

Travel & tourism.

Entry visa will be issued upon arrival according to decree approved by UAE Cabinet

Dubai: Indian passport holders with a valid American visa or a Green Card will now be eligible to obtain a UAE visa on arrival, as per the decree approved by the UAE Cabinet, it was announced on Wednesday.

The visa will be valid for 14 days, with a single extension possible for a fee.

The decision to have a simplified visa process is aimed at advancing the UAE-India relations in economic, politics, and trade. It also contributes to achieving UAE’s vision to be the leading country in attracting global tourism.

“Citizens of the Republic of India who are holders of normal passports with a six-month, or more, valid green card or visa issued by the United States of America shall be granted entry visas to the UAE from all ports for a period of 14 days, subject for a single renewal for the same period upon payment of applicable fees,” an official statement said.

According to latest figures, the UAE-India trade has grown to around $60 billion (Dh220 billion) per annum, making India the second largest trading partner of UAE. The UAE exports to India totalled $27 billion (Dh99 billion) while Indian exports to UAE totalled $33 billion (Dh121 billion).

India is investing about $70 billion (Dh257 billion) in the UAE through 45,000 Indian companies, while the UAE is investing $10 billion (Dh36 billion) in the Indian sectors of energy, metallurgical industry, services, technology and construction. A number of UAE companies invest and operate in India such as Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (ADNEC), Emaar, and Dubai Ports World (DPP), which currently operates in six major ports in India.

The number of Indian tourists coming to the UAE last year reached about 1.6 million Indian tourists, and there were about 50,000 UAE tourists who visited India in the same year. There are about 143 flights a day between the UAE and Indian cities, at a rate of 1000 flights per week.

Strong bonds of friendship between UAE and India have found clear expression in the series of high-level bilateral visits between the two countries in the past two years, The move of granting entry visas to the UAE aligns itself with the close cooperation between the two countries.

Deep historical ties between the UAE and India were further accelerated by the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the UAE in 2015, which was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister after 34 years.

The UAE reciprocated with an official visit where His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces,  met Modi in the Indian capital, New Delhi in February 2016 to discuss ways to strengthen the cooperation and friendship between the two countries.

In January 2017, Shaikh Mohammad was the chief guest of India’s 68th Republic Day celebrations, which marked a momentous occasion in relations between India and the UAE and saw the signing of 14 wide-ranging agreements including a strategic comprehensive partnership and deals on defence and maritime cooperation. The agreements added a new momentum to their deepening bilateral engagement.

GCC's unified visa to be rolled out soon: Here's what you should know

 alt=

Dubai: In a significant move to make travelling to the GCC countries simple and hassle-free, a unified visa system that allows the visa holder to stay up to 30 days in these countries, is likely to be launched by the end of this year. The GCC council has permitted to proceed with the unified visa that enables the visitor to enter the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Oman. Currently, separate visas are required to visit each country. The tourism ministers of the GCC countries hoped that the unified visa system would provide an impetus to the tourism sector of the region.

The ministerial-level seminar that was conducted as part of the Arabian Travel Market opined that creating a corridor by linking the major tourist attractions in the Gulf countries would pave the way for healthy competition and cooperation. This would then enable the GCC countries to highlight their incredible tourism potential to the world. The ministers said that the unified visa system would be a significant milestone in initiating developmental activities based on tourism. The meeting was of the opinion that a common visa would be helpful in projecting the Gulf countries as fabulous tourist destinations that are interconnected. Moreover, the GCC countries would be turned into a single tourism unit when the GCC railways too get materialised. Besides, the unified visa system could attract more investment to the airports and cruise terminals in the GCC countries.

Features of the visa The new visa will make travel in the GCC area more affordable and convenient for tourists. It will also improve and increase the activities offered to tourists. At the same time, unlike the Schengen visa, the GCC visa is meant for travellers who have a diverse business portfolio. The visa will also be beneficial to those travelling to the Gulf for Haj and Umra as well as those on short trips. In the first stage, the aim is to maximise cooperation between the GCC countries, which will facilitate the exchange of skilled labour in the second stage. The proposed rail link connecting the Gulf countries also necessitates the implementation of the unified visa regime.

The introduction of e-visas and affordable packages for Umrah has prompted many UAE residents to undertake the pilgrimage a few times a year. However, as Muslims around the world prepare for the Haj pilgrimage (June 14-19), it is now mandatory for UAE residents to book a slot on Nusuk App to perform Umrah. Also, only people with valid Umrah visas will be able to undertake the pilgrimage.

With Saudi Arabia announcing the entry date of Umrah visa holders as May 23, 2024, and exit date as June 6, 2024, pilgrims are eager to seize the opportunity to embark on the pilgrimage.

Over a hundred inquiries a day

Qaiser Mahmood from ASAA Tourism said their agency receives over a hundred calls daily from residents seeking to embark on Umrah before the Haj season commences.

“We were receiving hundreds of calls daily. Residents enquire about the requirements to travel to Umrah before the Haj season begins. There is a huge demand currently but we do see it slightly decreasing as the Haj season approaches,” said Mahmood.

Shihab Perwad from Rehan Al Jazeera Tourism said the quota of Umrah visas has reduced significantly. “Previously, we had 15,000 Umrah visa quota, it has currently been reduced to 1,500. This is being done by the authorities to prepare for the Haj season."

Residents who are willing to perform Umrah before the Haj season must start planning now because of the limited timeframe. “People who have a valid Umrah visa can travel to Madinah and Makkah currently. They have to exit the two holy cities before the set deadline by the authorities,” said Mahmood

Book slots on Nusuk App before tickets

Mahmood said one must book slots for Umrah through the Nusuk app before booking the tickets. “Once the Umrah slot is booked, the pilgrim should reach the holy city in a few hours before it becomes invalid. Failure to do so may result in pilgrims being denied entry to Saudi Arabia."

“The allocation of prayer slots through the Nusuk app has witnessed a decline, with no availability for sites such as Rowdah or Riyad al-Jannah,” said Perwad.

Two-year jail term for violating the law

Perwad said strict penalties await those who violate regulations not leaving the holy sites on or before the Haj season. “It may include imprisonment for up to two years and hefty fines amounting to SAR 50,000. It will be considered illegal entry to Madinah and Makkah,” said Perwad.

Restricted airports

According to Umrah operators, pilgrims with Umrah visas can access certain airports, namely Jeddah, Madinah, Yanbu, and Taif. “Those holding multiple entry visas are prohibited from traveling to these designated airports,” said Perwad.
