We thought about all the things that could go wrong that might stop us from going on this cruise — the death of an elderly relative, a work conflict or a broken leg. At the time, "pandemic" did not make our shortlist. We ultimately purchased a trip insurance package without the pricey "cancel for any reason" add-on (sometimes called CFAR). We thought we'd be just fine.

Of course, the sudden emergence of COVID-19 changed things and, boy, do we wish we'd sprung for the additional CFAR protection.

More destinations are reopened to American travelers, and people are booking trips once again. But the coronavirus pandemic isn't over, and there is still some uncertainty about what the rest of this year and 2022 holds. Cancel-for-any-reason trip protection can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in a time when flexibility is paramount when booking travel.

What you need to know about travel insurance

Cancel for any reason, also known as CFAR, is a time-sensitive, optional benefit that can be added to some comprehensive travel insurance policies for qualifying travelers. Before we delve into the details, it's useful to understand trip insurance in general. Here are some resources that explain everything you need to know about travel insurance and its benefits, from trip cancellation and interruption coverage to emergency medical to baggage delay. What is cancel-for-any-reason protection?

While travel insurance policies can offer a range of inclusions (think: medical evacuation, trip cancellation due to foreign or domestic terrorism or damage to your rental car), not every eventuality is included in all insurance policies. For example, some trip insurance plans may offer coverage in the event of employment layoffs, while others do not. Some policies may have robust emergency medical coverage, while competitors don't. That's why it's so important for you to select a plan that meets your specific needs for each trip.

A commonality among insurance policies is their long list of exclusions. For example, my homeowners' insurance clearly states I'm not covered for damage caused by an alien invasion. Yes. Seriously.

When it comes to travel insurance, it's common to see these sorts of incidents excluded from coverage: normal pregnancy, the illness of a pet, suicide (yours or a traveling companion) or any self-inflicted injury, psychological disorders, mountain climbing, bungee-jumping, skydiving, declared (or undeclared) war as well as epidemics and pandemics.

So, under normal circumstances, a travel insurance policy would likely not cover a trip you cancel because you're worried about contracting coronavirus .

That's where a cancel-for-any-reason policy comes into play. This is a time-sensitive add-on you can purchase from some providers when buying specific comprehensive travel insurance plans — as long as you meet certain eligibility requirements. By paying extra for this coverage, you can cancel for any reason under the sun as long as you follow the policies' purchase and cancel stipulations.

When am I eligible to add CFAR protection?

In general, you're only eligible to add CFAR protection to a comprehensive travel insurance policy at the time of purchase — you typically can't purchase the policy and then decide (at a later date) to commit to the CFAR add on. In addition, you'll need to commit to the policy and CFAR protection fairly soon after making your initial trip payment. According to InsureMyTrip.com , typically "a policy must be purchased within 10-21 days of making the initial trip payment to be eligible for CFAR benefits."

Many providers will also require you to insure the entire value of your trip, and additional requirements may apply. As always, it's critical to read through all of the terms before committing to purchasing any travel insurance policy — including CFAR coverage.

How much does cancel-for-any-reason coverage cost?

CFAR coverage is sounding pretty good as a way to hedge bets against the continued uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic. But, how much are you going to have to dig into your wallet to pay for it? The fee for this add-on is typically calculated as a percentage of the price of the standard insurance policy you select.

Standard comprehensive plans can cost about 4-10% of the total cost of the insured trip, and CFAR can be an additional 40-60% on top of the standard plan (not the cost of the trip).

Consider the following illustrative example for a $5,000 trip with two 50-year-old travelers to Aruba:

  • A standard, comprehensive plan might cost around $250 — which is 5% of the total trip cost.
  • A comprehensive plan with the CFAR upgrade included might cost around $375 — which is the price of the standard plan ($250) plus an additional 50% ($125).

However, please note that all plan costs can differ based on individual quote details.

Will you get all your money back if you purchase CFAR coverage?

No. Generally speaking, CFAR can reimburse up to 75% of your total insured, prepaid, nonrefundable trip cost. In addition, CFAR typically requires you to cancel your trip no less than two days prior to departure to be eligible for reimbursement.

Check the insurance policy terms carefully to find out how much your refund would be if you invoked the CFAR terms and canceled your insured trip — and be sure to know the deadline for doing so.

Should you buy CFAR coverage?

Whether to travel and what level of insurance to purchase — or not — is always a personal decision. But, TPG has consistently received a lot of reader questions over the past year about what they should do if they have a trip booked or were about to book a trip and now don't know what to do because of the uncertainty of the coronavirus.

"One of the top questions travelers ask is about when to splurge for the CFAR upgrade," says Meghan Walch, a travel insurance expert for InsureMyTrip . "It's important to note that a standard comprehensive policy does not cover fear of travel. That's why we strongly recommend all travelers consider CFAR, if eligible. There is so much uncertainty with the pandemic, travelers are leaning towards maximum flexibility to cancel their trip to receive a percentage of their trip cost back."

If your total trip cost is low, you may decide to forego insurance — or the additional CFAR coverage — and self-insure (i.e., eat the nonrefundable trip costs if you cancel). But, if your vacation is expensive, the additional fee for CFAR may feel like a bargain instead of potentially losing thousands of dollars if you have to cancel nonrefundable reservations.

A few more words of advice

Coronavirus is adding a layer of complexity to decisions travelers must make about going on planned trips and booking future vacations. Here are a few specific scenarios to consider:

What to do if you're about to book a trip but are hesitant because of coronavirus

If you're afraid to commit a large amount of money to a future trip, purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance policy and adding the cancel-for-any-reason coverage option might be the best bet.

"Cancel-for-any-reason is the only way to protect the majority of your trip cost if you would like the flexibility to cancel your trip due to fear of the coronavirus pandemic and variants that are currently spiking," says Walch.

This could also be a great option for immunocompromised travelers. Even a doctor attesting to your inability to travel may not be enough to qualify for reimbursement under a standard, comprehensive plan — but CFAR coverage could help recoup some of your forfeited costs.

What to do if you booked a trip and have insurance — but your policy doesn't include CFAR clause

If you purchased a comprehensive travel insurance plan for an upcoming trip but didn't add CFAR coverage, just be aware that your options for coronavirus-related cancellations are more limited. While CFAR is the only cancellation option to cover fear of travel due to the coronavirus pandemic, some comprehensive policies still offer coverage for other COVID-19-related concerns. This may include:

  • Coverage for common concerns like cancellation due to diagnosed illness before traveling
  • Emergency medical care from a doctor or hospital if you become ill while traveling
  • Accommodation coverage if quarantined at your destination

Always be sure to review your policy carefully to understand the exclusions — but note that, without CFAR coverage, canceling a trip simply because you're afraid of contracting COVID-19 will likely not result in a successful claim under standard, comprehensive travel insurance plans.

What to do if you booked a trip and have no travel insurance

First, look at when you actually booked the trip. If it was within the last three weeks, you may still be eligible for a comprehensive travel insurance plan with the cancel-for-any-reason add-on. And if not, there may still be more limited policies that provide some coronavirus-related protection — including emergency medical evacuation.

In short, it's critical to begin investigating your travel insurance options as soon as you book (and make an initial payment on) a trip, as this will maximize the number of applicable plans. This is particularly important when it comes to time-sensitive benefits — like CFAR protection.

What doesn’t qualify for a claim?

Refundable expenses don’t qualify. For example, if you book a flight, cancel your trip and receive a refund or a travel voucher, you can’t claim it afterward. If you redeemed airline rewards and got the miles redeposited, that also doesn’t qualify for a reimbursement.

Additionally, if you accept a voucher or credit from a hotel or airline for a canceled trip, your claim may be ineligible for CFAR insurance reimbursement. However, if you’re provided with only a partial voucher/credit for the trip or have leftover unreimbursed expenses, you can claim the remaining amount.

Let’s say you received a voucher for a canceled flight to Amsterdam but your hotel reservation wasn’t refundable and you couldn’t use your prepaid ticket to the Van Gogh Museum. In that case, you can still claim the nonrefundable expenses, minus the flight.

CFAR has a few limitations:

It doesn't offer full reimbursement.

Different policies have varying reimbursement percentages ranging from 50% to 75%.

A trip cannot be canceled at the last minute. You will need to cancel usually two days in advance to get reimbursed.

You are required to insure 100% of your nonrefundable trip costs; you can’t pick and choose which parts you want to insure.

You have a limited number of days (10 to 21 days depending on the policy) after buying a nonrefundable trip to add the CFAR option.

Regular travel insurance restricts when you can get reimbursed for canceled travel. For example, you might get a full refund if you, a family member or a traveling companion gets sick before your trip and you have a doctor’s note to validate your claim. Other valid reasons under some trip insurance policies include circumstances like:

Terrorist attacks.

Natural disasters.

Bankruptcy of the carrier.

Travel insurance typically won’t help if you want to cancel because you’re afraid of getting sick. Many people found that out as the coronavirus was starting to spread in 2020. Buying CFAR coverage is usually the only way to get a partial refund of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip.

Also, travel insurance policies usually exclude pandemics from coverage. Once the World Health Organization officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020, policies with pandemic exclusions wouldn’t cover illness or losses related to COVID-19.

Every policy is different, and you’ll need to review the fine print to see what is and isn’t covered.

How much does CFAR travel insurance cost?

Cancel For Any Reason coverage will likely add about 50% to your total travel insurance bill. According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, a complete travel insurance policy will usually cost about 4% to 8% of the trip's cost.

Based on these numbers, if you buy CFAR coverage along with travel insurance, your total out-of-pocket cost will be 6% to 12% of your trip.

To test these numbers, we searched for travel insurance policies that offer a CFAR upgrade on Squaremouth , a travel insurance comparison site. In the chart below, we’ve included four providers that offer Cancel For Any Reason coverage. The figures are based on a nonrefundable $1,000 one-week trip to Mexico in April taken by a 30-year-old U.S. citizen.

For each of the policies listed, travel insurance was from 4% to 8% of the total trip cost. CFAR coverage increased the cost of travel insurance by roughly 40%-50%. The cost of travel insurance inclusive of CFAR represented 5% to 12% of the total trip cost.

As you can see, CFAR is a pricey upgrade. Though these numbers may not look excessive, they are based on a one-week $1,000 trip. If you want to protect a two-week $5,000 trip (or a bigger one), the cost of CFAR increases considerably.

Will CFAR give me a full refund of my trip?

No. Typically, CFAR coverage includes a 75% reimbursement of prepaid nonrefundable trip plans. That is the appeal of the pricey CFAR add-on.

Let’s consider the example above. CFAR coverage under those policies reimburses 75% of the total trip cost. If you buy travel insurance for this trip (without CFAR) and need to cancel for a noncovered reason, you will lose the $1,000 you paid.

However, if you buy the CFAR option and cancel your trip, you will be reimbursed $750 and lose $250. You’re essentially paying an extra $16-$40 to safeguard $750 of your trip, no matter the reason for your cancellation.

If you’re having second thoughts about a trip you’re planning and suspect you may need to cancel it, CFAR could provide peace of mind.

1. Seven Corners

With Seven Corners , you must insure your trip within 20 days of the first deposit to be covered for 75% of the trip cost.

The cancellation must not occur within two days of the scheduled departure. This benefit isn’t available in all states.

Tin Leg provides the option to cancel for any reason on some of its policies and reimburses up to 75% of nonrefundable expenses for a covered trip.

You must buy coverage within 14 days after paying a deposit, cover the full cost of all nonrefundable costs and cancel the trip no fewer than two days before departure.

Allianz Global Assistance provides AAA’s travel insurance policies. Some AAA travel insurance plans offer a Cancel For Any Reason add-on. You can’t buy such coverage online and must talk to an agent first.

To qualify for a partial refund, you must buy the CFAR upgrade within 15 days of the initial trip deposit, cancel the trip more than 48 hours before departure and insure all prepaid, nonrefundable costs when buying the policy.

Cancel For Any Reason insurance is available as an add-on to the following protection plans by Trawick International : Safe Travels First Class and Safe Travels Voyager.

You must buy the coverage within 14 to 21 days of making your first trip payment (depending on the plan) and cancel the trip no fewer than two days before departure.

Most trip insurance providers limit the time during which you can buy CFAR coverage. We reviewed 16 travel insurance policies that offer CFAR as an optional upgrade and found that this add-on must be bought within 10 to 21 days of making your initial trip payment (depending on the company).

In the case of cruise-specific policies, you must buy CFAR coverage before the final payment date of your cruise. You cannot buy a CFAR supplement if your trip has begun.

If you buy travel insurance from a comparison site like Squaremouth, you can filter by policies that offer a CFAR upgrade. When choosing a policy, make sure to select the Cancel For Any Reason add-on (remember, it is optional).

Not every insurance company offers CFAR, so if you’re buying directly from a provider, check to see whether CFAR is available before you buy. Cancel For Any Reason coverage may not be available in every state, and policies may have changed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

If you’re interested in adding this type of coverage to your travel insurance policy, these providers are a good place to start your search.

If you have any inclination that you may cancel your trip — be it for personal, professional, health, family or other reasons — paying the upcharge for this optional add-on will be worth it.

Rather than being out all of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses, you'll lose 25%-50% of those costs.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card

If you booked your trip with a credit card that offers travel insurance , like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , paying out of pocket for CFAR coverage may not be a smart money move.

Cross-check your card's insurance benefits and coverage limits with the CFAR policy in question so you can make the right decision for you.

Look closely at transit and lodging cancellation and refund policies because having CFAR coverage may not be necessary for your specific trip plans. If the airline will credit your account with the full value of the ticket, you might be comfortable forgoing getting that money back in your personal bank account (rather than tied up in your loyalty account).

Similarly, some hotels offer generous refund policies for certain bookings, and vacation rentals vary in timelines for eligible refunds.

Trip cancellation provisions under travel insurance policies have a lot of exclusions. Wanting to cancel because you’re scared to catch the coronavirus isn't an allowable reason under these policies. The only way to protect a nonrefundable trip is to buy CFAR coverage. If you do cancel, make sure you do so in the allowable time frame (two days for many providers).

Similar to the trip cancellation coverage provided by travel insurance policies, credit card trip cancellation coverage has a long list of exclusions. Acceptable reasons for trip cancellation coverage can include bankruptcy, terrorist attacks and extreme weather that prevents a trip from starting. Changes in plans are generally not covered. The only way to protect your nonrefundable trip is to buy travel insurance and get a CFAR optional upgrade.

If it has been more than 10 to 21 days (based on the policy) since you made your initial trip payment, it’s probably too late to buy CFAR coverage. If you’re planning a cruise, CFAR must be bought before your final payment, in most cases.

No, you must add a Cancel For Any Reason insurance upgrade to an existing policy. Not all travel insurance policies offer the option to add the CFAR portion, so make sure you read the terms carefully before buying a plan. You can call the insurance provider if you can’t find the information online.

Trip cancellation clauses cover a list of events, such as natural disaster, an airline strike, a hurricane or jury duty, which are typically spelled out in a policy. If a reason isn’t listed, it’s not covered. A CFAR policy, by definition, covers events not specified in the policy, such as border closures or fear of travel, meaning you can cancel without disclosing the reason for cancellation. A standard trip cancellation policy still applies because you buy the two benefit components together. This means that if you have to cancel for a covered reason, you might be eligible for 100% reimbursement instead of the partial refund that a CFAR plan provides.

Because you have to claim 100% of your nonrefundable trip expenses on a CFAR policy, you should be able to identify them. Typically, these expenses are anything you’ve paid for and likely won’t be refunded if you cancel. Examples include: flights that can’t be refunded, a deposit for a Danube cruise, a monthlong Airbnb in Spain, airport transfers in Cancun, amusement park tickets bought for specific dates, a cooking class in Bali, you name it. If you can’t get a refund, it qualifies.

The coronavirus has had a significant impact on travel. Many people have had to cancel trips, and some are still hesitant to plan vacations. Though standard travel insurance can protect you when unforeseen circumstances affect you before or during your trip, the coverage comes with a lot of limitations and exclusions.

My wife and I added the Viking cancel for any reason coverage to our Viking Greek cruise scheduled for early December.  Due to emergency surgery, we were obliged to cancel at the beginning of November. We notified Viking and received a cancel confirmation. And filed the documentation with Trip-Mate in early November. Their paperwork, our hospital and surgical info, etc prob 18 pages.

Heard zero from Viking or Trip-Mate the administrator. Nothing on the Trip-Mate site about receiving our information. Their phone rep said they are swamped, expect three weeks or more for anything to show up. Viking was no help.

We received another confirmation of our cancelled trip from Viking in early December. Magically, the Trip-Mate site updated that night to show all documents received and under review. That was December 5.

It's now December 28, and still no resolution. Trip-Mate's representative says the review may be completed as early as next week. If approved, the payments will be made within 30 days. That pushes it out to February.  "If approved", what's to approve?  We cancelled for any reason.

From the beginning of November when documents were filed to the beginning of February when payments could be made seems like an outrageous amount of time since they've had access to the supporting documents for the entire time.

We have been happy with Viking Ocean and its operations over two cruises, and have recommended Viking to others. But the choice of Trip-Mate and the deliberately slow walking of all steps in our reimbursement seems inconsistent with Viking's requirements of full payments well in advance when it is receiving payments.

Next time around, we will be sure to get our travel insurance coverage from a company which does right by its policyholders.  "Cancel for any reason"  We cancelled and provided evidence, and they still slow walk the whole process.

Apparently Viking coverage operates differently. CFAR means you don’t have to provide documentation. You get reimbursed with vouchers regardless of the reason for cancellation.  You had a medical claim which qualified for full cash reimbursement.

I don’t really understand why people accept vouchers in place of cash even if some bonus FCC is awarded. Vouchers can be difficult to use and may still require new money or forfeiture of value depending on how they are applied. Plus, Viking will not insure vouchers used for the subsequent trip, and bonus FCC can’t be insured by third-party policies so any advantage is lost if the second cruise is cancelled.

If you look closely at the Trip Mate policy through Viking, it CLEARLY states that Part A is provided by Viking and it is Cancel for Any Reason coverage with reimbursement by voucher from Viking to be applied to a future cruise.  Part B is provided by the Underwriter totally separate from Viking.  A refund is given IF the reason for cancellation is a covered reason and IF the required documentation is provided to the Underwriter within their stated time frame.  We choose Part A or Part B.  Once we make that choice it is final.

Emergency surgery should be a covered reason to cancel.  It sounds like you provided the documentation, it was received and approved.  Your follow up for payment should be made with the insurance company.  Viking was out of the picture once the Part B claim was made and they are not a liaison with the insurance underwriter for you.

You’re right. It might have gone faster as a true CFAR because documentation is not required. In your case, the administrator had to verify the claim so that took longer. Your state insurance commission might have been able to intervene on your behalf if you had contacted them.  I hope that the rest of the process goes smoothly and that your wife is well on her way to recovery.

I understand your frustration, and I won't even begin to try to talk you out of it. Having placed a claim through TripMate ten years ago from a land based tour, I have a reasonable degree of confidence you will get your reimbursement. 

I will, however, offer one bit of advice. EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, takes longer than it used to take. Somehow, it is a side effect of the pandemic. I hope it is not permanent. Best of luck.

To update this situation -

I spoke with Trip-Mate today about the progress, if any, on our cancel for any reason reason Viking refund.

Me: We received communication at the beginning of December that all information, including that from Viking, has been received.  What's the status?

Joe at Trip-Mate:  Yes. Your claim has been approved. It has been moved to payment processing.

Me: That's great, When will I get my money?

Joe: Well, once payment processing finishes its work, the authorization review takes place, then it moves to final review, and will be scheduled for payment.

Me: How many days are we talking about here? You guys haven't exactly moved very quickly so far.

Joe: Expect it will take about 30 days.

Me: 30 days from when?

Joe: Today.

Me: when was the claim approved? Today?

So, it seems that Viking and Trip-Mate are aggressively playing the float here. Trying to stretch out payment as long as possible. They've had all the material they need from us for nearly three months, and could have had the info from Viking much earlier than they said they received it.

I'm very unhappy with the way Viking and Trip-Mate are gaming their customers. On the one side, you have to pay for cruises immediately, even though the departure may be 18 months away. On the other side, they actively hold customer refund money far longer than they need to.

We had a similar situation.  It took about 4 months for resolution and constant checking.  One needs to have patience.

Yes, patience is a virtue. Viking / TripMate finally sent us our checks via email, three full months to the day after we cancelled.

The paper checks can be deposited. If we wished to receive direct deposit, that would cost us another 5%.

Lesson learned, now onto the next cruise adventure!

It doesn't matter if it's caused by an unexpected illness, political unrest in your destination country, or something else. If you don't have an effective travel insurance policy, you could lose all your nonrefundable costs. For international or long-trip travelers, this could be thousands of dollars.

Regular travel insurance will cover cancellations as long as the cause falls within guidelines. Unfortunately, this leads to a lot of unexpected denials. People assume travel insurance covers everything only to find out that their family emergency, illness, etc. isn't included. This is where cancel for any reason coverage comes in.

What is cancel for any reason travel insurance? 

Cancel for any reason insurance is a type of travel insurance rider that allows you to cancel your trip and get reimbursed for nonrefundable travel costs. CFAR insurance generally increases your premium by 40% to 50%.

Travel insurance is a type of insurance policy that protects you from various losses that can occur while on a trip. Though most standard policies cover trip cancellation, it's typically limited to specific scenarios — like illness or a natural disaster.

If you add on cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage, you can cancel for virtually anything as long as you do it within the required timeframe. You typically need to cancel at least two days before the trip is scheduled to start.

"The cancel for any reason benefit means you can nix your trip for reasons other than those specifically covered in your plan," says Jeff Rolander, director of claims at Faye, a travel insurance provider. "Adding CFAR protection to your travel insurance plan helps give you peace of mind knowing you have the ability to cancel your trip if you simply don't feel like going."

Comparing CFAR with Standard Travel Insurance

Standard trip cancellation insurance covers you for specific, predefined reasons, such as illness, injury, or the death of a family member. On the other hand, CFAR insurance provides a broader scope of coverage, allowing you to cancel your trip for any reason that's not listed in the policy. However, CFAR typically comes at a higher premium and usually offers partial reimbursement of your trip cost.

Life is messy and often unplanned. While many countries are reopening and reducing restrictions, that could change anytime. This is complicated without including family emergencies, illness, and other unexpected complications. Cancel for any reason insurance takes the mystery out of things.

1. CFAR is worth it for any trip, no matter the cost

CFAR increases the cost of travel insurance quite a bit, so it may not be worth it on shorter, less costly trips or ones you're very unlikely to cancel (like a trip to your own wedding, for example).

If you're taking a particularly long or expensive trip, it might be worth it — especially if there's some concern you may need to cancel. If you want the freedom to cancel due to COVID-related concerns, it can also be smart.

"CFAR is worth the money if a traveler has a very specific concern that can't be covered otherwise," Moncrief says. "CFAR proved popular throughout the pandemic as a way for travelers to prepare for the constantly changing travel landscape."

2. CFAR costs a ton of money

While CFAR coverage does make your travel insurance more expensive, you'll still pay around $100 or less in most cases. As you can see in the chart above, the typical CFAR policy costs about $60 to $130 — in addition to your basic travel insurance premium per person.

3. My credit card offers trip cancellation coverage, so CFAR is never worth it

While many credit cards do come with travel benefits, coverage is often limited in scope. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , for example, won't reimburse you for trips canceled due to a "change in plans or financial circumstances." The Platinum Card® from American Express covers cancellations due to injury, sickness, inclement weather, terrorist actions, and other reasons covered by most basic travel insurance plans. Still, in comparison, CFAR offers much wider coverage and protection.

4. You can buy CFAR at any point before your trip begins

You have to purchase CFAR coverage soon after booking your trip. Most companies require you to purchase within 15 to 21 days of putting down an initial deposit. After that point, you will be unable to add CFAR coverage to your policy.

The cost of CFAR travel insurance varies by provider and depends on the age of the travelers, the destination, the duration of the trip, and other details. You can generally expect to pay between 40% to 50% more when adding CFAR coverage.

Why should I buy Cancellation for Any Reason coverage?

Although there are a great many covered reasons for Trip Cancellation, not every possible reason is covered. Travel protection plans generally do not cover a change of mind or other similar discretionary reasons.

Our Deluxe Plus Plan offers a Cancellation For Any Reason benefit which allows the traveler freedom to cancel a trip for any reason not otherwise covered by the plan (you must cancel two (2) days or more before the scheduled departure date) and this plan provides reimbursement for 75% of the unused non-refundable trip cost insured. Of course, if a trip is canceled for a covered reason, then reimbursement would be at 100% of the trip cost insured under the Trip Cancellation coverage.

How do I determine the correct amount of travel protection to buy?

You should protect the full cost of all of your non-refundable air, land or cruise travel arrangements.

For example, many first class airline tickets, and some business class tickets are fully refundable. You should only buy travel protection for the full cost of your non-refundable travel arrangements. Non-cash transactions such as frequent traveler awards, early bird discounts etc, generally cannot be covered as these items have no cash value.

Important Tip!  You should always insure the full cost of any non-refundable travel arrangements.

Do I purchase for my age at the time of travel or when the plan is purchased?

You should provide your current age at time of purchase.

When does my travel protection plan go into effect?

Under the Trip Cancellation and Cancel for Any Reason Benefit, coverage begins at 12:01am on the day after for the plan. For most other coverages, coverage begins when you depart on your first travel arrangement.

May I extend my travel protection plan if I have already departed?

Extension of Coverage: All coverages under this Plan will be extended if Your entire Trip is covered by this Plan and Your return is delayed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond Your control. This extension of coverage will end on the earlier of the date You reach Your originally scheduled return destination or 10 days after the Scheduled Return Date.

What is a pre-existing condition?

A “Pre-Existing Condition” means an illness, disease, or other condition during the 60 day period immediately prior to the date your coverage is effective for which you or your traveling companion, business partner or family member scheduled or booked to travel with you: (1) received or received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment for a condition which first manifested itself, worsened or became acute or had symptoms which would have prompted a reasonable person to seek diagnosis, care or treatment; or (2) took or received a prescription for drugs or medicine.

Item #2 of this definition does not apply to a condition which is treated or controlled solely through the taking of prescription drugs or medicine and remains treated or controlled without any adjustment or change in the required prescription throughout the 60 day period before coverage is effective under your plan.

What if all I do is take medication(s)? Would this be considered a pre-existing condition?

If throughout the 60 day pre-existing period, your condition is stable (i.e. no other treatments, tests, or diagnostic exams), and your medication remains unchanged, this would not be considered a pre-existing medical condition.

My traveling companion is unable to travel with me, however I still want to travel, what should I do?

If you would like to take your trip without your traveling companion, you can be reimbursed if you incur occupancy upgrade charges, provided your traveling companion has canceled or interrupted his or her trip for a covered reason.

What happens if my flight home is delayed and I must spend additional time at my destination?

The Travel Delay benefit covers reasonable accommodation, meals and local transportation due to common carrier delay of 12 hours or more while enroute from your trip.

What happens if I miss my tour or cruise departure?

Our plans reimburse (up to the plan maximum benefit amount) additional transportation costs to join your trip and unused portions of prepaid land or water travel arrangements.

This benefit applies if you miss your tour or cruise departure because your arrival at your trip destination is delayed 3 hours or more due to:

  • any delay of a common carrier;
  • a documented weather condition prevented you from getting to the point of departure; or
  • quarantine, hijacking, strike, natural disaster, terrorism or riot.

What happens if the airline loses my baggage at the start of my trip?

Coverage is available (up to the amount listed in the schedule) for baggage and personal effects, passports and visas  (lower limit) that are lost, stolen, or damaged during your covered trip.

Our plans also provide a Baggage Delay Benefit. This benefit reimburses the cost of reasonable additional clothing and personal articles purchased by you (up to the amount listed in the schedule of benefits) if your baggage is delayed 24 hours or more while on your trip.

May I cancel my plan if, after reviewing it, I am not satisfied?

You may cancel and return your plan documents within the 10-day free look period and your payment will be refunded. Provided you have not already departed on your trip or filed a claim.

Should I take my Plan Documents with me and should I read them first?

Yes, you should always take your Plan Documents with you, and you should read your documents as soon as you receive them to make sure the information is accurate.

Plan Documents explain the plan benefits, limitations, conditions and exclusions. The Schedule Of Benefits contains the maximum benefit amounts of each coverage included in the plan purchased.

I have read my documents and notice some of the words are capitalized. Why?

A word or phrase is capitalized because the word or phrase is defined in the Plan Documents.

My travel information is incorrect or need to be changed. What do I do?

In addition to Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation, the plan includes other benefits to help protect you from the unexpected during your vacation, such as:

  • Medical and emergency assistance — includes benefits up to $25,000 for medical expenses, emergency medical transportation and 24-hour emergency assistance service for illness or injury during the trip.
  • Post-departure trip interruption — covers you up to the original cost of your trip, when you must interrupt your trip or return home early for covered reasons, such as sickness, injury or other covered reasons.
  • Travel delay — pays up to $100 per day for meals and accommodations when you are delayed on your trip for 12 hours or more.
  • Baggage delay — reimburses you up to $250 for clothing and personal items if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours.
  • Loss or damage to baggage or personal effects — covers up to $2,500 for loss or damage to baggage or personal effects that occur during the trip.

  • If purchased, everyone on the booking must purchase the Travel Protection Plan. 
  • The cost of the Travel Protection Plan is only refunded for cancellations covered by the hurricane policy (or within the state required free look period).

Lowest Price Guarantee (Provided by Delta Vacations)

If Delta Vacations advertises an identical vacation at a lower price, Delta Vacations will guarantee that price. The advertised vacation must be available and include the same air components (including air fare class), hotel and room category, and any other previously purchased components, including the Travel Protection Plan PLUS. Refunds for the difference in the package price will be issued in the original form of payment.

Below, you'll find information on how to request the lowest price guarantee along with lowest price guarantee terms and conditions.

To request the Lowest Price Guarantee 10 days or more before departure:

  • Create a new reservation with lower price and place on hold.
  • Note: Some reservations may require confirmation with a credit card.
  • Contact Delta Vacations at 1-800-800-1504, 6:00 am - 11:00 pm CST.
  • If the new reservation qualifies, the travelers will receive confirmation of the new reservation at the adjusted price. Previous reservation will be refunded to the original form of payment.

To request the Lowest Price Guarantee within 10 days of departure:

  • Create a new reservation and confirm with credit card.

Travel Protection PLUS and Lowest Price Guarantee Terms and Conditions

  • The Travel Protection Plan PLUS cannot be applied to Miles to Go or upgraded bookings.
  • Lowest Price Guarantee is on the total package price, not component to component.
  • All components must be available at the time of the new reservation.
  • Lowest price guarantee must be on the exact same vacation package including the same dates, air components, hotel and room category, and any other previously purchased components, including the Travel Protection Plan PLUS.
  • Lowest price guarantee is allowed to be used only one time per booking, and may be exercised up to the time of departure.
  • Promotional codes applied to the original reservation must be valid at the time of the lowest price guarantee request to maintain promotional code discount. If the promotional code is no longer valid, a new promotional code can be applied, as long as all terms and conditions are met.
  • Lowest price guarantee does not apply to group reservations.
  • Lowest price guarantee cannot be purchased separately, and is only available through the Travel Protection Plan PLUS program.
  • Delta Vacations is the final authority on the interpretation of these rules, and reserves the right to change these terms and conditions without prior notice.

Travel Protection Plan Travel Certificate Redemption Terms and Conditions

Redemption Instructions

  • Contact Delta Vacations at 1-800-800-1504 or online at delta.com/vacations.
  • Enter/provide the 12-digit travel certificate number printed on the front of the travel certificate document during the payment step.
  • Provide additional form of payment, if necessary.
  • Delta Vacations will issue and send your travel documents via the delivery method requested during the booking process.

Redemption Terms and Conditions

  • Travel certificate is valid for the value indicated on the front of the travel certificate document when redeemed toward the purchase of any Delta Vacations air and hotel package; air, hotel and car package; hotel-only; or hotel and car or ground transportation package purchase.
  • Travel certificate can be redeemed in its entirety or in increments up to the value or balance remaining on the certificate.
  • If the price of the booking is more than the value of the travel certificate, an additional form of payment for the remaining balance will be necessary to complete the transaction.
  • Travel documents for the redeemed travel certificate will be issued, and sent via the delivery method identified during the booking process.
  • Purchases with this travel certificate will be deducted from the balance until the value reaches zero or until the expiration date is reached, whichever occurs first.
  • No refunds or credits will be issued for any unused portion of the travel certificate.
  • Travel certificate is not valid for use toward the purchase of Group bookings, ski bookings, gift cards or another travel certificate.
  • The expiration date for this travel certificate is printed on the front of the travel certificate document; the travel certificate is valid for payments made prior to the expiration date.

Passports, Visa & Travel Documents

Viking will send you a number of notifications via email as your departure date nears, including your booking confirmation, payment receipts and, if you purchased your air travel from Viking, logistical information about your air travel and transfers. Be sure your email account is set up to receive communications from Viking so that these messages can find their way to you.

Distribution of Travel Documents

Tickets and other travel documents will be issued approximately 3 weeks prior to departure. Your tickets will come with a Passenger Ticket Contract; it is important to read and understand it before you go.

Passenger Ticket Contract (US & Canada)

Due to airline security measures, your passport name must match your airline ticket name or you may be denied boarding. Your passport’s expiration date must be at least six months after your return from your trip; if it is not, you should renew your passport.

Passport Application

If you are traveling with us to Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, China, Egypt India, Jordan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, or Vietnam, you will need a visa. Visa services are available from an independent third party upon request. If you would like to obtain your visa through our partner, please visit their website and download a visa kit. Complete and return the forms to the visa company in a timely manner so that you will have your documentation in time to travel. The timing is explained within the kit instructions. Anyone who wishes to obtain their own visas for Cambodia and Vietnam should make sure to get a single-entry visa for Cambodia and a double-entry visa for Vietnam. This will enable travel to Vietnam, to Cambodia and back to Vietnam during the course of the itinerary. Please note that e-visas for Vietnam are now accepted for US and Canada passport holders. E-visas for Cambodia are accepted for guests traveling from Hanoi to Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh City. However, if traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Cambodia to Hanoi, a label visa or visa on arrival is applicable. Viking will assist with obtaining the latter. On Ocean cruises, the ship will obtain the required visa prior to your arrival for Egypt, Jordan, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Travel Guard  is one of the best-known names in the travel insurance industry, with several plans available for traveler needs in every direction. AIG also provided the lowest quote for our hypothetical Europe travelers despite offering the highest ceiling on CFAR reimbursement.

Both AIG's Preferred and Deluxe insurance plans offer CFAR coverage as an add-on to the policy, and some policies cover up to 75% of total trip costs going all the way up to a maximum reimbursement of $112,500.

AXA Assistance USA  is a great option for our hypothetical Europe cruise travelers, with its coverage of up to $1,500 per person for missed cruises and tours. This insurer also covers lost and delayed ski, sports and golf equipment – items that aren't always included in lost or delayed baggage coverage under other carriers. The rest of your belongings are safe too with AXA, as lost baggage claim ceilings are up to $3,000 per person - more than double some of its other competitors.

Unfortunately, AXA may not be the best fit for travelers who need high-ticket travel protection, as the upper limit for CFAR reimbursement only goes up to a maximum of $50,000 despite covering up to 75% of total nonrefundable expenses, which is lower than the ceilings from other competitors such as AIG and Seven Corners. Furthermore, CFAR insurance coverage can only be added on to AXA's top-tier Platinum plan.

This insurer offers flexible coverage terms for longer travel durations. If you are 79 years old or younger, you can purchase a single-trip travel insurance plan that can cover your adventures for up to 150 days. Furthermore, reimbursement for baggage delays and losses, trip delays and missed connections kick in far more quickly than most competitors, with up to $2,500 per person for eligible missed travel connections available at the three-hour mark.
