What is Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance?

Can i really cancel for any reason what does a cfar policy cover, the limitations of cfar, how does cfar travel insurance compare with regular travel insurance, cancel for any reason travel insurance cost, best cfar travel insurance, tips before you buy, is cancel for any reason travel insurance worth it, cancel for any reason recapped.

CFAR coverage is sold as an optional add-on to a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

Expect to pay another 3% of your trip cost to get this coverage.

CFAR typically covers up to 75% of nonrefundable expenses. You will not get all of your money back.

CFAR only covers eligible expenses; check your terms to determine which down payments count.

Travel insurance can help you get your money back if you have to cancel a trip — but only if you cancel for certain reasons. If you want more flexibility, you may need “Cancel For Any Reason,” or CFAR, coverage.

Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance means exactly that: You can change your mind — regardless of why — and get a partial refund of what you paid without having to worry about meeting insurance coverage requirements.

The main details to know about Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance are:

CFAR is supplemental coverage that offers partial reimbursement when you cancel a nonrefundable trip for any reason that isn't covered by your travel insurance policy.

You cannot buy CFAR on its own; it’s an optional upgrade added when you buy primary travel insurance.

Not every trip insurer offers it, and not every plan is eligible for the add-on.

It is the only type of coverage that will offer reimbursement if you cancel a trip for any reason.

Yes — for any reason, including fear of travel. When you buy CFAR coverage, you can cancel your trip for any reason without worrying that you’ll lose your entire prepaid, nonrefundable vacation deposit.

The reason doesn't matter as long as you cancel within the allowable time frame (usually two days in advance) and you’ve insured the entire nonrefundable cost of your trip.

What doesn’t qualify for a claim?

Refundable expenses don’t qualify. For example, if you book a flight, cancel your trip and receive a refund or a travel voucher, you can’t claim it afterward. If you redeemed airline rewards and got the miles redeposited, that also doesn’t qualify for a reimbursement.

Additionally, if you accept a voucher or credit from a hotel or airline for a canceled trip, your claim may be ineligible for CFAR insurance reimbursement. However, if you’re provided with only a partial voucher/credit for the trip or have leftover unreimbursed expenses, you can claim the remaining amount.

Let’s say you received a voucher for a canceled flight to Amsterdam but your hotel reservation wasn’t refundable and you couldn’t use your prepaid ticket to the Van Gogh Museum. In that case, you can still claim the nonrefundable expenses, minus the flight.

CFAR has a few limitations:

It doesn't offer full reimbursement.

Different policies have varying reimbursement percentages ranging from 50% to 75%.

A trip cannot be canceled at the last minute. You will need to cancel usually two days in advance to get reimbursed.

You are required to insure 100% of your nonrefundable trip costs; you can’t pick and choose which parts you want to insure.

You have a limited number of days (10 to 21 days depending on the policy) after buying a nonrefundable trip to add the CFAR option.

Regular travel insurance restricts when you can get reimbursed for canceled travel. For example, you might get a full refund if you, a family member or a traveling companion gets sick before your trip and you have a doctor’s note to validate your claim. Other valid reasons under some trip insurance policies include circumstances like:

Terrorist attacks.

Natural disasters.

Bankruptcy of the carrier.

Travel insurance typically won’t help if you want to cancel because you’re afraid of getting sick. Many people found that out as the coronavirus was starting to spread in 2020. Buying CFAR coverage is usually the only way to get a partial refund of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip.

Also, travel insurance policies usually exclude pandemics from coverage. Once the World Health Organization officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020, policies with pandemic exclusions wouldn’t cover illness or losses related to COVID-19.

Every policy is different, and you’ll need to review the fine print to see what is and isn’t covered.

How much does CFAR travel insurance cost?

Cancel For Any Reason coverage will likely add about 50% to your total travel insurance bill. According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, a complete travel insurance policy will usually cost about 4% to 8% of the trip's cost.

Based on these numbers, if you buy CFAR coverage along with travel insurance, your total out-of-pocket cost will be 6% to 12% of your trip.

A sample of CFAR coverage cost

To test these numbers, we searched for travel insurance policies that offer a CFAR upgrade on Squaremouth , a travel insurance comparison site. In the chart below, we’ve included four providers that offer Cancel For Any Reason coverage. The figures are based on a nonrefundable $1,000 one-week trip to Mexico in April taken by a 30-year-old U.S. citizen.

tripmate travel insurance cancel for any reason

For each of the policies listed, travel insurance was from 4% to 8% of the total trip cost. CFAR coverage increased the cost of travel insurance by roughly 40%-50%. The cost of travel insurance inclusive of CFAR represented 5% to 12% of the total trip cost.

As you can see, CFAR is a pricey upgrade. Though these numbers may not look excessive, they are based on a one-week $1,000 trip. If you want to protect a two-week $5,000 trip (or a bigger one), the cost of CFAR increases considerably.

Will CFAR give me a full refund of my trip?

No. Typically, CFAR coverage includes a 75% reimbursement of prepaid nonrefundable trip plans. That is the appeal of the pricey CFAR add-on.

Let’s consider the example above. CFAR coverage under those policies reimburses 75% of the total trip cost. If you buy travel insurance for this trip (without CFAR) and need to cancel for a noncovered reason, you will lose the $1,000 you paid.

However, if you buy the CFAR option and cancel your trip, you will be reimbursed $750 and lose $250. You’re essentially paying an extra $16-$40 to safeguard $750 of your trip, no matter the reason for your cancellation.

If you’re having second thoughts about a trip you’re planning and suspect you may need to cancel it, CFAR could provide peace of mind.

Tin Leg provides the option to cancel for any reason on some of its policies and reimburses up to 75% of nonrefundable expenses for a covered trip.

Allianz Global Assistance provides AAA’s travel insurance policies. Some AAA travel insurance plans offer a Cancel For Any Reason add-on. You can’t buy such coverage online and must talk to an agent first.

  • Many different plan options.
  • CFAR available as an add on.

Cancel For Any Reason insurance is available as an add-on to the following protection plans by Trawick International : Safe Travels First Class and Safe Travels Voyager.

You must buy the coverage within 14 to 21 days of making your first trip payment (depending on the plan) and cancel the trip no fewer than two days before departure.

Most trip insurance providers limit the time during which you can buy CFAR coverage. We reviewed 16 travel insurance policies that offer CFAR as an optional upgrade and found that this add-on must be bought within 10 to 21 days of making your initial trip payment (depending on the company).

In the case of cruise-specific policies, you must buy CFAR coverage before the final payment date of your cruise. You cannot buy a CFAR supplement if your trip has begun.

If you buy travel insurance from a comparison site like Squaremouth, you can filter by policies that offer a CFAR upgrade. When choosing a policy, make sure to select the Cancel For Any Reason add-on (remember, it is optional).

Not every insurance company offers CFAR, so if you’re buying directly from a provider, check to see whether CFAR is available before you buy. Cancel For Any Reason coverage may not be available in every state, and policies may have changed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

If you’re interested in adding this type of coverage to your travel insurance policy, these providers are a good place to start your search.

If you have any inclination that you may cancel your trip — be it for personal, professional, health, family or other reasons — paying the upcharge for this optional add-on will be worth it.

Rather than being out all of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses, you'll lose 25%-50% of those costs.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card

If you booked your trip with a credit card that offers travel insurance , like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , paying out of pocket for CFAR coverage may not be a smart money move.

Cross-check your card's insurance benefits and coverage limits with the CFAR policy in question so you can make the right decision for you.

Look closely at transit and lodging cancellation and refund policies because having CFAR coverage may not be necessary for your specific trip plans. If the airline will credit your account with the full value of the ticket, you might be comfortable forgoing getting that money back in your personal bank account (rather than tied up in your loyalty account).

Similarly, some hotels offer generous refund policies for certain bookings, and vacation rentals vary in timelines for eligible refunds.

Trip cancellation provisions under travel insurance policies have a lot of exclusions. Wanting to cancel because you’re scared to catch the coronavirus isn't an allowable reason under these policies. The only way to protect a nonrefundable trip is to buy CFAR coverage. If you do cancel, make sure you do so in the allowable time frame (two days for many providers).

Similar to the trip cancellation coverage provided by travel insurance policies, credit card trip cancellation coverage has a long list of exclusions. Acceptable reasons for trip cancellation coverage can include bankruptcy, terrorist attacks and extreme weather that prevents a trip from starting. Changes in plans are generally not covered. The only way to protect your nonrefundable trip is to buy travel insurance and get a CFAR optional upgrade.

If it has been more than 10 to 21 days (based on the policy) since you made your initial trip payment, it’s probably too late to buy CFAR coverage. If you’re planning a cruise, CFAR must be bought before your final payment, in most cases.

No, you must add a Cancel For Any Reason insurance upgrade to an existing policy. Not all travel insurance policies offer the option to add the CFAR portion, so make sure you read the terms carefully before buying a plan. You can call the insurance provider if you can’t find the information online.

Trip cancellation clauses cover a list of events, such as natural disaster, an airline strike, a hurricane or jury duty, which are typically spelled out in a policy. If a reason isn’t listed, it’s not covered. A CFAR policy, by definition, covers events not specified in the policy, such as border closures or fear of travel, meaning you can cancel without disclosing the reason for cancellation. A standard trip cancellation policy still applies because you buy the two benefit components together. This means that if you have to cancel for a covered reason, you might be eligible for 100% reimbursement instead of the partial refund that a CFAR plan provides.

Because you have to claim 100% of your nonrefundable trip expenses on a CFAR policy, you should be able to identify them. Typically, these expenses are anything you’ve paid for and likely won’t be refunded if you cancel. Examples include: flights that can’t be refunded, a deposit for a Danube cruise, a monthlong Airbnb in Spain, airport transfers in Cancun, amusement park tickets bought for specific dates, a cooking class in Bali, you name it. If you can’t get a refund, it qualifies.

The coronavirus has had a significant impact on travel. Many people have had to cancel trips, and some are still hesitant to plan vacations. Though standard travel insurance can protect you when unforeseen circumstances affect you before or during your trip, the coverage comes with a lot of limitations and exclusions.

The best way to protect a nonrefundable trip is to buy a Cancel For Any Reason optional upgrade because it will allow you to cancel for any reason and still receive a sizable reimbursement.

What Is the BRT Trip Assurance Program?

tripmate travel insurance cancel for any reason

Student group travel typically is planned months or years in advance. It requires significant investments by educators, parents, students and BRT, in both time and money. But sometimes, things change and a group must cancel its plans.

We want you to know that your financial investments are in good hands. With the BRT Trip Assurance Program, if your group must cancel its trip, we will go the extra mile to ensure that the highest refund possible goes back to you.

For 39 years, we’ve been advocates for our educators and their students. The BRT Trip Assurance Program is one more way we continue to do that.

How Does the BRT Trip Assurance Program Work?

At BRT, we customize each trip to the needs of our educators and their students.

A single trip can require coordination with several partners, from transportation companies to hotels to performance venues, with each partner having policies covering cancellations and refunds. During trip planning, we will proactively communicate cancellation deadlines to the group leader.

Should your trip have to cancel for reasons beyond your control, we will work with each of these partners to get you the highest refund possible . As you get closer to your trip’s departure, the non-refundable amounts paid by BRT to vendors will continue to increase. However, if do you need to cancel close to departure, BRT will always work with these vendors to get the most possible refunded.

Program Summary:

The Trip Assurance Program means the following if and when the full group chooses to cancel:

  • 91 days or more from trip departure date: 100% refund less any non-refundable vendor payments.
  • 90 days or fewer refund less any non-refundable vendor payments and a 15% service charge.

Our Promise:

Cancel for any reason (cfar) insurance.

In addition to the BRT Trip Assurance Program, guarantee the best refund by including “ Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) ” insurance on your trip. This third-party insurance will give up to a  75% refund, and when coupled with our efforts to get you the maximum refund, the end result is typically an 80% – 95% total refund.   Contact us to learn more or to add CFAR Insurance to your trip.

How Do I Join the BRT Trip Assurance Program?

"Cancel for Any Reason" (CFAR) travel insurance provides the utmost flexibility, allowing you to cancel your trip for any reason that's not covered by standard travel insurance. It's the safety net for those 'just in case' moments, offering peace of mind for unforeseen circumstances. Let's dive into what sets the best CFAR travel insurance apart from other policies.

Our picks for the best cancel for any reason travel insurance

Best overall: seven corners travel insurance.

Best value: Travel Guard

Best for adventurers: Travelex Travel Insurance

Best for popularity: Trawick International Travel Insurance

Best for cruises and tours: AXA Assistance USA

Best for quick protection: TravelSafe Insurance

Seven Corners Travel Insurance is a well-known carrier that has served thousands of travelers. The Trip Protection Choice plan offers a cancel for any reason travel insurance add-on that covers up to 75% of total trip costs, with a maximum of up to $75,000 in reimbursement. Medical coverage is also generous, with up to $500,000 per person for eligible medical expenses and evacuation/repatriation limits of up to $1 million per person.

Seven Corners also offers generous benefits on lost baggage and delayed travel or baggage expenses. Baggage delay benefits kick in after just six hours and go up to $500 per person.

The Choice plan does not insure travel canceled by tour operators that are or have gone out of business, so this policy may not be the best fit for travelers who plan to visit destinations with tenuous

Best value: AIG Travel Guard

Travel Guard  is one of the best-known names in the travel insurance industry, with several plans available for traveler needs in every direction. AIG also provided the lowest quote for our hypothetical Europe travelers despite offering the highest ceiling on CFAR reimbursement.

Both AIG's Preferred and Deluxe insurance plans offer CFAR coverage as an add-on to the policy, and some policies cover up to 75% of total trip costs going all the way up to a maximum reimbursement of $112,500.

Many AIG policies also include COVID coverage even without CFAR protection, as well as some ancillary benefits such as rental car protection and even pet travel insurance.

Read our AIG Travel Guard Insurance review here.

Best for adventurers: Travelex

Travelex Travel Insurance is a great cancel for any reason option for travelers who plan to participate in strenuous or adventurous activities during their trip. While the CFAR coverage add-on only reimburses up to 75% of nonrefundable trip expenses, it still provides a certain modicum of peace of mind in case of emergencies, with cancellation available as an option up to 48 hours before travel begins.

Travelex offers low medical coverage compared with its competitors, with a maximum of up to $50,000 per person. Travelers participating in adventure sports can purchase an optional add-on bundle for additional coverage. In case of emergency, Travelex policy holders might do well to consider the travel insurance benefits on their credit cards to supplement any potential medical expenses.

Read our Travelex Insurance review here.

Best for popularity: Trawick

Trawick International Travel Insurance had one of the priciest plans with CFAR coverage in our comparison, but the carrier's popularity amongst travelers is undeniable, for many reasons. The Safe Travels Explorer is particularly beneficial for pet owners who may incur medical expenses for their animals, as the plan includes up to $250 toward unexpected costs for cats and that who accompany their owners in their travels.

While Trawick's CFAR coverage was one of the most expensive add-ons we evaluated as well, the carrier offers generous compensation margins for travelers who need it, with up to 75% reimbursement for nonrefundable trip costs.

Read our Trawick Travel Insurance review here.

Best for Cruises: A XA Assistance USA

AXA Assistance USA  is a great option for our hypothetical Europe cruise travelers, with its coverage of up to $1,500 per person for missed cruises and tours. This insurer also covers lost and delayed ski, sports and golf equipment – items that aren't always included in lost or delayed baggage coverage under other carriers. The rest of your belongings are safe too with AXA, as lost baggage claim ceilings are up to $3,000 per person - more than double some of its other competitors.

Unfortunately, AXA may not be the best fit for travelers who need high-ticket travel protection, as the upper limit for CFAR reimbursement only goes up to a maximum of $50,000 despite covering up to 75% of total nonrefundable expenses, which is lower than the ceilings from other competitors such as AIG and Seven Corners. Furthermore, CFAR insurance coverage can only be added on to AXA's top-tier Platinum plan.

Read our AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance review here

Best for convenience: TravelSafe

Travel insurance is a great option to consider if you have a lot of stops or transits on your trip, or if you are an expat living abroad. This insurer offers flexible coverage terms for longer travel durations. If you are 79 years old or younger, you can purchase a single-trip travel insurance plan that can cover your adventures for up to 120 days. Furthermore, reimbursement for baggage delays and losses, trip delays and missed connections kick in far more quickly than most competitors, with up to $2,500 per person for eligible missed travel connections available at the three-hour mark.

While TravelSafe's medical coverage of up to $100,000 may be on the lower side for travelers who anticipate potential medical expenses, those with the right credit cards may be able to supplement their emergency costs through a claim with their card issuer.

Understanding 'Cancel for Any Reason' Coverage

Key features.

CFAR policies are unique; they allow cancellation for reasons beyond the usual covered reasons of travel insurance policies. This includes fear of traveling due to a pandemic or a sudden change of mind. However, it's essential to understand the specifics, such as the percentage of the trip cost reimbursed and the time frame for cancellation.

How CFAR Differs from Standard Policies

Unlike traditional travel insurance policies that cover specific cancellation reasons like illness or weather-related issues, CFAR offers a broader spectrum of coverage. It's the premium choice for travelers seeking full control over their plans.

That said, you must also buy travel insurance early if you want to qualify for a CFAR policy, usually within a certain period from when you place a deposit on your trip. That's why it's important to be mindful of when you buy travel insurance .

How to Pick The Best CFAR Travel Insurance Plan for You

There is no one-size-fits-all "best" insurance plan, especially for CFAR coverage, which can add to your insurance premium. Even for the same person, the right policy will vary from trip to trip, depending on your activities.

If you're primarily concerned about getting your money back if your schedule changes, you may be able to get away with a basic plan that allows you to add CFAR coverage. If you're undertaking a grueling hike through some challenging mountain ranges, you may want to select a policy that includes generous medical and evacuation protection, plus flexibility to reschedule or re-book your trip in case of injury. And if you plan to visit a number of destinations within a short amount of time, trip delay or baggage loss protection may need to be one of your top priorities. If you only need basic coverage, consider our guide for the  best travel insurance policies .

Steps to Choosing CFAR Coverage

  • Evaluating Your Travel Needs Consider the nature of your trip, destinations, and what uncertainties you might face. This will help determine the level of travel insurance coverage you need.
  • Comparing Prices and Benefits Analyze different policies in terms of cost, coverage percentage, and additional benefits. Look for the best value for your specific needs.
  • Reading the Fine Print Understanding the terms and conditions, including the cancellation window and reimbursement process, is crucial to avoid any surprises.
  • Making the Most of Your Policy Once you've chosen a policy, it's important to know how to use it effectively.
  • Understanding Your Policy Familiarize yourself with the details of your policy, including how and when to file a claim.
  • Tips for Filing a Claim Be timely and thorough when filing a claim. Keep all relevant documents handy and follow the provider's process closely to ensure a smooth experience.

How we reviewed CFAR travel insurance

Business Insider reviewed numerous insurance products looking for the best options. Especially when it come to travel insurance, each traveler has a distinct experience and plan. So we looked for companies offering the optimal coverage packages for certain groups.

To accurately compare the cost of CFAR coverage from the insurance carriers we recommend, we collected quotes for a hypothetical two-week trip to three countries in Europe for two travelers ages 38 and 45 that includes a river cruise, renting a vacation home, and taking several flights. The total cost of travel comes out to $14,000 between two people.

The main factors we evaluated when picking our top CFAR travel insurance options were: policy cost, level of protection, claims experience, and policy types.

All our reviews are independently done, meaning travel insurance companies don't get to review or approve our reviews. Similarly, our top guide spots are not for sale. All placements are earned through strong coverage, efficient claims handling, and strong customer service.

Read our insurance rating methodology for more details.

How do I purchase CFAR insurance?

CFAR insurance is purchased as an add-on to a single trip travel insurance policy. It will affect how much you can receive for a canceled trip, but won't affect your other benefits.

Can I purchase CFAR insurance for annual plans?

No, insurance providers generally don't offer CFAR for multi-trip annual plans. It's limited to single trip travel insurance.

What percentage of my trip cost will CFAR insurance reimburse?

This varies by provider, but typically, CFAR policies reimburse between 50% and 75% of the pre-paid, non-refundable trip cost.

Is cancel for any reason travel insurance worth it?

Yes, cancel for any reason travel insurance is worth it if there's a chance you need to change your travel plans. Traditional travel insurance only offers cancellation coverage for specific reasons, so CFAR insurance provides extra coverage and peace of mind. It also reduces the amount of paperwork necessary for filing a claim.

What is the difference between trip cancellation and cancel for any reason?

Trip cancellation coverage is a benefit of standard travel insurance plans, offering reimbursement if your trip needs to be canceled for specific covered reasons, such as a death in the family or illness. On the other hand, cancel for any reason insurance, reimburses you for a canceled trip regardless of the reason, so there are fewer restrictions.

Trip Cancellation and Cancel For Any Reason

One of the most frequently asked question with travel protection is what is the difference between Trip Cancellation and Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage benefits in travel protection?

The Quick Answer

Trip Cancellation means the trip is cancelled, before it begins, and the reason for cancellation is due to one of the covered reasons written in the plan and would be reimbursed 100% of the trip cost.

Cancel for Any Reason allows the traveler to simply change their mind and choose whether to cancel the trip, without needing to provide an explanation and receive 75% of their trip cost.

There are some requirements, and they are important, as explained below.

What’s A Covered Reason?

The covered reasons are listed in the plan documents, available to view prior to purchase and delivered instantly after purchase. The reasons tend to be situations that are unforeseeable and out of your control. The most commonly claimed trip cancellation covered reason is due to a medical need. This could be a sickness, injury or death of one of the travelers or their immediate family members. Other covered reasons can include: weather delays, strike, destination uninhabitable from natural disaster, mechanical breakdown of a common carrier, mandatory evacuation, bankruptcy of a travel supplier, among other covered reasons. For complete details, please refer to the plan documents, available when you create a quote online .

At the risk of being repetitive, Cancel For Any Reason literally means any reason. You don’t even have to tell us the real reason.

Act Quickly for CFAR

Trip Cancellation is available for purchase at any time prior to the trip departure date. It makes more sense to purchase earlier to receive the waiver of Pre-Existing Conditions, insuring a longer amount of time for the same price, as discussed in the 5 Reasons to Book Travel Protection Early . But this is only good advice, not a requirement.

Cancel For Any Reason is available in the TripAssure Complete plan if the plan is purchased within 15 days of the initial trip deposit date and the full cost of the trip is insured. This is the earliest date any payment was made toward any part of the trip. If a small payment toward a cruise was made first, and flights booked later, the cruise payment date is the initial trip deposit date. After 15 days, TripAssure Complete is still available for purchase, but will not include the CFAR benefit.

Insure the Trip Cost

TripAssure travel protection plans allow the traveler to insure some, none, or all of the trip cost. Trip cost includes pre-paid and non-refundable expenses of the trip. The amount of trip cost insured will set the limit on the amount of Trip Cancellation coverage. You could decide to only insure the flight, but not the hotel. You could insure zero trip cost, effectively removing the cancellation coverage benefits, but benefits like medical and baggage remain. The best practice is to make sure the full trip cost is insured, avoiding a possible unhappy customer who would only receive some of their trip cost back if they underinsured.

Cancel For Any Reason coverage limits will also be set at the dollar amount of trip cost insured. However, Cancel For Any Reason requires that the full trip cost be insured. To qualify for this coverage benefit, there isn’t an option to underinsure.

Last Chance to Cancel

Trip Cancellation allows travelers to cancel their trip any time prior to departure. This could be six months in advance, or the day of departure.

Cancel For Any Reason lets travelers cancel at any time up until two days before departure. Once the trip departure date is within two days, CFAR coverage stops. So while Cancel For Any Reason allows you the decision, it doesn’t quite allow a last minute decision.

Have CFAR? Still Have Trip Cancellation Too!

If a traveler purchased the TripAssure Complete plan and met all the requirements to qualify for Cancel For Any Reason coverage, that plan will also include Trip Cancellation coverage. Remember, Trip Cancellation can reimburse 100% of the trip cost, while CFAR is limited to 75%. This means if the reason a trip is cancelled is due to a covered reason, the traveler can claim Trip Cancellation for 100% of their trip cost. If the reason for cancelling is not listed in the plan, then a CFAR claim is the best option.

This information is meant to be a summary explanation of the differences between Trip Cancellation and Cancel For Any Reason coverage benefits in TripAssure travel protection plans. Please always refer to the plan document for specific details, and don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.
