Whether golfing or strolling along the beach , a UV umbrella is a simple, portable shade solution that helps protect you from overheating, damaging your eyes, or getting burned. An umbrella isn’t perfect nor a substitute for sunscreen, UV-blocking clothing, or sunglasses—but it can block most direct UV rays. When researching products for this article, special attention was paid to the type of materials used, whether they featured vents, and their ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating.

Best Overall

Uv-blocker uv protection compact umbrella.

Thermal-regulating features

Also protects against the rain

Ventilates well

Not particularly stylish

A premium product with a price tag to match, the UV-Blocker Compact Umbrella is not a cheap option. However, its sizable 42-inch arc is paired with a folding design that reduces the total length from 21 to 11 inches—a major plus for frequent travelers or city slickers who don't want to compromise on coverage. The canopy's double-vented design allows air to pass through, keeping you cooler on hot days and minimizing the chance of the umbrella inverting when it's windy.

The top layer is made from silver Solarteck fabric, which reflects most UV rays, reducing the temperature beneath the umbrella by up to 15 degrees (according to the brand). The blue underside of the canopy absorbs any remaining UV rays, giving an overall UPF rating of 55+. You can also use this umbrella to stay dry.

"The astronaut silver of the UV-Blocker UV Protection Compact Umbrella might initially make you a little self-conscious. But it's a well-made, portable umbrella that protects you from UVA and UVB rays as well as the occasional surprise rain shower," our tester reported. "While it might not be your first choice in terms of visual appeal (particularly when considering the massive UV-Blocker logo across the canopy), it does serve a purpose. The silver exterior is designed to reflect sunlight and reduce heat absorption, and the navy blue interior is supposed to absorb the sun's reflection from below."

Best Budget

Cuby uv umbrella.

Lightweight

Travel-friendly

Protective claims without UPF rating

For the best bang for your buck, reach for this simple yet effective protective umbrella. The multilayer pongee fabric has a hydrophobic coating on the exterior to repel water and a black vinyl coating on the inside to absorb light and keep you cool. Eight fiberglass-aluminum ribs support the canopy without adding unnecessary heft—this model tips the scales at about 12 ounces. Other highlights include the auto-open and close button for one-handed operation, a rubber handle for a comfortable grip, and the collapsible shaft for convenient storage.

Canopy Dimensions: 37 inches (diameter) | Folded Dimensions: 11 inches | UPF Rating: Not listed

Best for Golf

G4free double canopy uv golf umbrella.

Generous coverage

Year-round protection

Compatible with most golf cart umbrella mounts

Too big for crowded city use

The G4Free Windproof Golf Umbrella's oversized canopy is made from 210T pongee, a micro-weave fabric known for its water-resistant, quick-drying qualities. A UPF rating of 50+ means it blocks 99 percent of the sun's rays, so you can spend hours outside without getting burned (though we recommend pairing it with other forms of sun protection). The 62-inch arc is big enough to accommodate two comfortably, making this product ideal for beach trips, golf tours , and sports matches. However, some may find it too unwieldy for city living.

Windproofing is provided courtesy of a double canopy vent that allows air to pass through for better handling in harsh conditions and is supported by eight reinforced fiberglass ribs. Another great feature is the auto-opening mechanism—simply press a button for instant, one-handed release. The EVA handle is easy to grip, and a travel sleeve with an over-the-shoulder strap comes included in the price.

Canopy Dimensions: 52 inches (diameter) | Folded Dimensions: 39.4 inches | UPF Rating: 50+

Best Oversized

Suntek 68-inch uv protection umbrella.

Interior offers a pop of color

Can double as a golf umbrella

Also offers rain protection

Could be easier to open/close

Those who want maximum coverage should opt for the SunTek Canopy Umbrella, whose 68-inch arc can accommodate at least two people. The 100-percent-nylon double canopy features a silver coating that reflects heat and provides UPF 50+ protection from UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. A Vortec venting system prevents the umbrella from inverting in high winds.

Fiberglass construction keeps the umbrella lightweight while also increasing its lifespan. It stands 42.5 inches high and features an easy-to-grip handle that fits into the umbrella mount on most golf carts, leaving your hands free to work on perfecting your swing . Although all products have a silver coating on top, you can choose from a range of colors for the underside of the canopy, including yellow, black, blue, and green.

Canopy Dimensions: 57 inches (diameter) | Folded Dimensions: 42.5 inches | UPF Rating: 50+

Best for Travel

Umenice uv protection travel umbrella.

Packable size

Opens automatically

Slides effortlessly into sleeve

Complaints about durability

While most UV umbrellas on the market are travel-friendly, the Umenice UV Protection Travel Umbrella stands out for its light weight of 12.8 ounces. Its aluminum frame is also less than 12 inches long, meaning you can easily tuck it into your handbag and whip it out when needed. Plus, the umbrella has a double-coated silver canopy with UPF 50+ protection that blocks more than 98 percent of UVA/UVB rays. It can also stand up to strong winds thanks to its fiberglass frame, while a PU-coated handle makes the umbrella easy to grip.

Canopy Dimensions: 36 inches (diameter) | Folded Dimensions: 11.6 inches | UPF Rating: 50+

Best for All Conditions

Coolibar travel umbrella.

Allows airflow

Built to last

Easy to operate

Handle could be more comfortable

Rain or shine, the Sodalis Travel Umbrella from Coolibar has got you covered. It boasts a high-tech coating with UPF 50+ protection that blocks 98 percent of UV radiation, and its underside absorbs UV rays. And for rainy days, the umbrella's water-repellent, durable nylon fabric comes in handy. With a 42-inch arc and a 38.5-inch diameter, this umbrella's double-canopy design with mesh inserts also offers ventilation for hotter weather. Its soft-grip handle and auto-open/close button make the umbrella great for travel, as it collapses into a compact 11 inches.

Canopy Dimensions: 38.5 inches (diameter) | Folded Dimensions: 11 inches | UPF Rating: 50+

Best Design

Sharpty inverted umbrella.

Unique, reverse closure

Lots of colorways

Thoughtful handle design

Not very compact when closed

With a double-walled canopy, the Sharpty Inverted Umbrella is great for blocking the sun on sizzling summer days but also has a brilliant design if it does happen to start showering. While most umbrellas close from the inside out, this one has an easy button that closes from the outside in, trapping the water so that your car seat, luggage, and floor don't get soaked. Plus, there are 17 bright and fun colors and designs ranging from sunflowers and stripes to starry nights and the Eiffel Tower. The C-shaped handle is made from carbon fiber and allows travelers to attach it to one of their forearms to free up their hands.

Canopy Dimensions: 42.5 inches (diameter) | Folded Dimensions: 31.9 inches | UPF Rating: Not listed

Best for the Beach

Sport-brella sun and rain canopy umbrella.

Vented for airflow

Included stakes have limited utility

Many sun umbrellas are too small to realistically double as beach umbrellas. Many beach umbrellas are too large and heavy to realistically carry on a walk. The Sport-Brella tries to bridge this gap with a large but lightweight sun umbrella with built-in flaps for converting to a wind- and sun-blocking shelter for the beach, concerts, and anywhere you can take it. At 8 feet wide, it’s big enough for two, and it comes with stakes and poles to secure it in place when used as a shelter.

Canopy Dimensions: 96 inches (diameter) | Folded Dimensions: 55 inches | UPF Rating: 50+

Best Parasol

Vivi sky old-fashioned parasol.

Comfortable to hold

Not sturdy enough for daily use

Fashionistas will love the retro look of this beautiful parasol, with its peaked pagoda shape and 16 slender metal ribs. It offers protection from UV rays and rain (although its delicate construction is not intended to withstand strong winds). It's made of 210T pongee fabric, which is waterproof and keeps the rain off you. Choose yours in ivory, black, pink, or purple. Whichever color you go for, the matching hooked handle, ribs, and canopy trim are contrasting, thereby increasing the parasol's visual impact. It measures 35 inches in diameter and 33.5 inches in length.

Canopy Dimensions: 35 inches (diameter) | Folded Dimensions: 33.5 inches | UPF Rating: Not listed

If you're in the market for a UV umbrella that offers ample coverage, stands up to wind and the surprise shower, and packs down small, the UV-Blocker Compact Umbrella is ideal. For UV protection on the links, we recommend the G4Free Double Canopy UV Golf Umbrella .

What to Look For in a UV Umbrella

Nothing ruins a good umbrella like a stiff gust of wind. Look for vents (sometimes referred to as a “double canopy”), which allow air to pass through your umbrella instead of taking it for a ride or inverting it. Some models also offer ventilation via mesh panels.

Polyester and nylon are two of the most common fabrics used in umbrellas. Polyester is affordable but can sag and stretch more than nylon if soaked. Pongee is a lesser-known material with a higher thread count than nylon or polyester; as such, it's very thin, silk-like, and better equipped to repel water.

When it comes to support, look for strong, flexible, and lightweight rib constructions. Flexibility is essential in a non-vented model as it will improve the umbrella's ability to withstand strong winds and occasionally invert instead of breaking.

Often associated with sun-protective clothing, UPF measures how much sunlight penetrates a particular fabric. It's not to be confused with SPF, which is associated with sunscreen and measures how long it takes for UV-exposed skin to redden. UPF rating is affected by the construction, color, treatments, and type of fibers used in a product.

A rating of 20 means 1/20th (or 5 percent) of available UV radiation will pass through the fabric, blocking 95 percent of harmful rays. A protective fabric needs a minimum rating of 15. An item with a 30 rating will receive the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation , while 50+ is considered excellent protection. The best way to find the rating of an umbrella is simply to check the product details since manufacturers generally advertise this information.

Yes, definitely. While a good sun umbrella will block most direct rays, UV radiation comes in several forms and can easily reflect off surfaces. And, because the sun moves, you may not always be able to stay perfectly under the shade of your umbrella.

Yes, if you're going to be in the sun for long periods, a layer of sunscreen is necessary. A good pair of sunglasses is perhaps even more important—glare and reflections from intense rays can easily hit your eyes, even with an umbrella. And don't discount sun-protective clothing, which can be one of your best defenses against UV radiation.

Almost any UV umbrella will also shed rain, though they may not be as purpose-built for that as a true rain umbrella. High-quality rain umbrellas will use tight fabrics and coatings meant to block rain and stay dry.

A rain umbrella will certainly block some UV rays, as will nearly any fabric. The advantage of a UV umbrella is that it is made for sun protection and will likely block more than 99 percent of direct UV rays. Many also have reflective coatings that help keep the air underneath cool.

Best Overall

Weatherman travel umbrella.

We were impressed by this umbrella’s performance and sturdiness.

The price tag is worth it — but not if you’re prone to losing umbrellas.

There’s nothing quite as humbling as an umbrella that flips inside out at the slight whisper of wind, leaving you awkwardly trying to flip it back as you stand in the rain, but this Weatherman umbrella proved its worth during testing. Our team member took this product out during an intense storm in San Francisco akin to a hurricane complete with “purple winds,” and this umbrella stepped up to the challenge like a true hero. It made it through strong winds and rough handling like a champ without popping inside out. Our team member reported back, “It felt like the wind was going to pick me off the ground and the umbrella survived that!”

It also dried quickly and showed no signs of wear. The grip was comfortable, and the umbrella provided ample protection from the rain. Weighing under a pound and just shy of a foot long when unopened, it’s the perfect size to throw into a bag or backpack without feeling like it’s even there. The color options are impressive with 11 styles to choose from, ranging from classic black to fluorescent pink. When it comes to weathering storms with style and reliability, this umbrella takes the cake, leaving flimsy alternatives in the dust. It’s a worthwhile investment, but if you’re notorious for misplacing umbrellas, then you may want to think twice — or at least be extra careful.

Best Compact

Davek mini umbrella.

This is the smallest, most lightweight option on our list.

This umbrella is not suitable for more than one person.

Compact and lightweight, the Davek Mini Umbrella is the perfect choice to bring anywhere with you as an “emergency” umbrella, slipping effortlessly into coat pockets or fanny packs without weighing you down. We were impressed that this option is only seven inches long when not in use (for reference, that’s as tall as an iPhone 13 Pro Max). Despite its smaller size, its robust mechanics, sturdiness, quality, and forecasted longevity make it a worthy investment at $60.  Plus, with a range of 10 vibrant colors to choose from, it adds a touch of fun to rainy days. This umbrella is perfect for solo strolls but not ideal for sharing with a friend — unless you're comfortable with a little cozy closeness.

Best for Two People

Shedrain jumbo compact umbrella.

This umbrella provides more than ample coverage for two people.

We wish the handle was longer, although that’s not a deal breaker.

Bigger isn’t always better, but in this case, it might very well be. Despite its jumbo size, this umbrella is easy to handle and comfortably fits two individuals. With a spacious canopy and sturdy construction, it's a reliable shield against the elements, even boasting windproof capabilities up to 75 mph. It is on the longer side at 15 inches when closed, but it’s still compact enough to fit in a small carry-on suitcase . We love that it comes with a rubber wristlet so you can easily throw it on your wrist or hook it onto the outside of your bag when not in use. Bonus points: it only takes this umbrella about 10 minutes to fully air dry.

Best Quick-dry

Totes titan umbrella.

Overall, we recommend this umbrella for its portability, durability, and ease of use, in addition to standing out as a top choice for water repellency and fast drying.

We would suggest improving the closing mechanics for a smoother operation.

Say goodbye to leaving your soaking wet umbrella out to dry overnight. The standout feature of this umbrella is how quick it dries after use, only needing minutes to fully dry. Despite facing moderate rain and strong winds of 25-28 mph, this umbrella held its ground admirably. Its one-handed, button-operated opening proved to be smooth, though closing required a bit more force. With a generous 43-inch canopy, it provided ample coverage for one person. The sturdy frame and solid mechanics withstood the wind during testing, offering a secure grip with its textured handle. Compact and lightweight at just 11 inches when folded, it's easily portable for on-the-go use.

Most Affordable

Sy compact travel umbrella.

For how compact it is, we were impressed at how wide the canopy was when open, providing great coverage from getting wet.

Minor improvements could include enlarging the closure loop for easier fastening.

If you’re searching for affordability, durability, and style, then look no further. As the most budget-friendly option on this list, this umbrella impressed with its user-friendly design and effectiveness in repelling water. Its easy one-button opening and closing mechanism, though requiring a bit of muscle to fully close, was easy to operate. The comfortable handle added to its appeal, enhancing grip and comfort. Portable and lightweight, it easily fits into various bags without adding bulk. There are multiple colors and prints to choose from, providing an option for every taste.

Best Inverted Design

Siepasa inverted reverse upside down umbrella.

This umbrella is lightweight, sturdy, and reliable when it’s windy.

Given the inverted design, it is too large to fit into an average backpack, tote, or carry-on suitcase.

There are a whopping 44 design options to choose from with this stylish umbrella, featuring a solid color, print, or pattern on the inside of the canopy. We thought it was too large to carry in most day-to-day bags, but it would make a great option to keep in a car. In fact, its inverted design makes it especially easy to close when entering a car, while the button-operated opening mechanism provides smooth and hassle-free operation.

It does also offer hands-free carrying options, such as an oval handle for convenient wrist or bag strap attachment . Some users may find the smooth plastic handle difficult to grip for extended periods. However, the umbrella's ability to stand on its own was a standout feature, adding convenience when setting it down. Despite its lightweight and slim profile, it offered ample coverage for one or even two people, with sturdy construction that held up well against gusts of wind during testing. For what you pay, you get a lightweight, incredibly sturdy umbrella that is easy to use and reliable in the wind.

Most Stylish

Gustbuster automatic umbrella.

You can add a custom metal engraving on The Metro’s hardwood handle for a stylish detail.

This umbrella is better suited to fit in a backpack or tote than a smaller purse or pocket.

Have you ever considered adding a personal touch to your umbrella? Well, now you can with the option to engrave on this Gustbuster option. While it is considered a splurge, the ability to customize your umbrella adds a unique flair to an everyday item and also makes a great gift option. We love this umbrella for its ease of use and impressive water repellency. With a simple button operation and secure Velcro closure, it offers convenience and security, although its slightly larger size may make it bulkier to carry compared to smaller travel-size umbrellas. Despite its larger dimensions, it provides ample coverage for one person and possibly two, thanks to its durable construction and sturdy materials.

Best Prints

Shedrain compact umbrella.

Lightweight, compact, and available in multiple prints, it fits easily into various bags, making it a versatile choice.

This umbrella is best for one person.

Pick up this ShedRain umbrella if you want to brighten up a sad, rainy day. This travel umbrella comes in a variety of punchy prints, from colorful florals to bold patterns. In terms of performance, the umbrella excelled in repelling rainwater, offering sufficient coverage for one adult and possibly two, although they would need to be close together. While not tested in extremely windy conditions, it still proved sturdy and durable, drying off quickly after we used it, with no signs of wear. Lightweight and compact, it fits easily into various bags, making it versatile for different situations. Priced at under $20, we’d say it’s an affordable option to add to your inventory of travel accessories.

EEZ-Y Compact Travel Umbrella

This umbrella offers excellent value for its quality and design, outperforming some more expensive brands.

While the umbrella's compact size is convenient for portability, it does not provide sufficient coverage for multiple people during heavy rainfall.

Four words: ballin’ on a budget. With its simple yet functional build and impressive performance compared to pricier alternatives, this travel umbrella earned our praise and recommendation as a budget-friendly, reliable choice for rainy days. Its automatic push-button opening mechanism, ergonomic handle, and compact size made it easy and comfortable to use during testing. Despite its small size when closed, it provides surprisingly ample coverage when open, suitable for one person. The umbrella's quality surpasses typical travel-size umbrellas, with sturdy construction and wind-resistant design. We found that it effectively repelled water and dried quickly after use, maintaining its functionality and appearance after we used it during light rainstorms. Highly portable and lightweight, it fits easily into various bags without taking up much space.

Best for Sun Protection

Sport-brella versa-brella.

This umbrella’s best feature is its versatility, making it a highly adaptable option for providing shade in various outdoor settings.

It's a clamp-on model, so it's not intended to be used as a handheld umbrella.

Did somebody say beach day? This umbrella is best to take on the go to the beach, pool, park, or anywhere you think you’ll need some extra shade. This umbrella has a 1.5-inch clamp that will hold onto anything, making it versatile for any outdoor situation. While primarily designed for sun protection, it proved durable and provided satisfactory rain coverage for one person, although the lopsided design (one half of the umbrella is longer than the other) required adjustments in windy conditions. The material is durable, but we found that the frame can be flimsy depending on what it's attached to.

Other Travel Umbrellas We Liked

Three additional travel umbrellas we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list due to minor issues but still had notable features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Blunt Metro Umbrella : It’s clear that this umbrella’s structure provides durability, but despite its quality build, we found it to be too large for daily commuting and travel. However, this could be an excellent option to keep at home.

Samsonite Windguard Auto Umbrella : The umbrella's durability and quality materials make it feel sturdy and capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions, providing reliable protection. However, it requires significant force to close, which could be challenging for individuals with limited hand or arm strength. It also only comes in one color option: black.

EuroSchirm Swing Liteflex Ultra-light Weight Trekking Umbrella : This umbrella has a lightweight design and spacious canopy that accommodates two people comfortably, but the high price point and elongated size of the collapsed umbrella limits its portability and affordability compared to other travel umbrellas on the market.

Our T+L team tested 18 travel umbrellas in everyday scenarios to assess ease of use, protection, durability, portability, and value. We followed a comprehensive examination to evaluate each option, including overall construction, packability, performance in wet weather and windy conditions, coverage, drying time, and sturdiness. We used the umbrellas in a variety of practical scenarios, including rainy and windy days, and tested them while commuting to and from work to determine functionality, versatility, and durability.

We took notes on how easy it was to open and close the umbrellas and their portability in different sized bags. Special attention was paid to the durability and quality of the umbrellas’ materials, including the fabric, wire structure, handle, and pole, to assess long-term resilience. In wet weather conditions, the umbrellas’ performance was evaluated in terms of its coverage, sturdiness, and comfort. Assessments include whether the umbrella adequately protects from rain, its size when fully open, the comfort of the handle, and stability in windy conditions. If exposed to rain, we also took notes on the time it took for the umbrella to dry completely and any signs of wear and tear. Some options did not make this list due to low-quality materials that blew inside out too easily and didn’t offer adequate coverage in the rain.

Our long-term plan includes testing these umbrellas for an additional six months to monitor each umbrella’s performance and durability in different travel scenarios and weather conditions. As we continue to test the umbrellas in various real-world settings, we will take notes on portability, practicality, and durability, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each travel umbrella’s reliability. We will update these results if our findings should change and as we test new umbrellas.

Tips for Buying Travel Umbrellas

Think about how compact you need it to be.

Before purchasing the travel umbrella that is best for you, take a moment and think about your intended use. Determine whether you need the umbrella for occasional travel or everyday use, as this will influence factors like durability and portability. Assess whether the dimensions — especially the length of it when not in use — and weight of the umbrella suit your preferred method of carrying it, whether in a pocket, purse, backpack, or by its strap/handle.

We recommend opting for umbrellas that are specifically designed for travel since they are often more compact and lightweight compared to regular umbrellas. Additionally, pay attention to the dimensions of the umbrella when it’s fully open. Some travel umbrellas are designed for one person, while others are larger and suitable for two. Choose the size that best fits your needs, whether you prefer individual coverage or sharing with a travel companion.

Prioritize durable materials

When you're on the hunt for a travel umbrella, don't forget about durability. Look out for ones that have durable materials to ensure longevity and reliable performance, including fiberglass, aluminum, or sturdy steel for the frame and ribs. (Pro tip: all of our recommendations on this list are made from one of these three materials.) A strong canopy fabric, preferably with water-repellent coatings, adds to the umbrella's durability and weather resistance.

And, don’t overlook the quality of the handle and grip, as this will make or break your rainy day travels. Choose options with handles made from comfortable, non-slip materials like rubber or foam, ensuring a secure hold even in wet conditions. Ergonomic designs further enhance comfort during prolonged use.

Look for useful features

When purchasing a travel umbrella, look for useful features that enhance convenience and functionality. Consider umbrellas with a carrying strap that allows you to loop it around your wrist while walking, keeping your hands free for other tasks. A rubberized handle provides a secure grip, especially in rainy conditions, reducing the risk of slippage.

Opt for umbrellas with alternate designs such as inverted umbrellas or those made from Teflon-coated materials. Inverted umbrellas fold inward, trapping water inside and preventing drips when closed, while Teflon-coated fabrics repel water and facilitate quicker drying, ideal for on-the-go use.

Additionally, consider other features like automatic open and close mechanisms for effortless operation, windproof designs with reinforced frames and vents to withstand strong winds, and UV protection for added sun safety during outdoor activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ideal diameter for a travel umbrella depends on personal preference and intended use, but a common diameter range for travel umbrellas is between 36 to 42 inches when fully opened. This size provides a balance between compactness for portability and sufficient coverage to protect against rain.

If you plan on using the umbrella for two people, a diameter closer to 48 inches or more would provide sufficient coverage for both individuals. Ultimately, the best diameter for a travel umbrella is one that suits your specific needs and preferences while offering adequate protection from the elements.

An umbrella is considered windproof when it's designed and constructed to withstand strong wind gusts without flipping inside out or breaking. Several key features contribute to making an umbrella windproof, including a sturdy frame and a flexible and durable canopy material that can withstand wind pressure without tearing or collapsing. Even automatic open and close mechanisms ensure quick deployment and retraction, enabling the umbrella to be easily deployed even in sudden gusts of wind.

Yes, you can bring an umbrella on a plane. According to the TSA , umbrellas are allowed for both carry-on and checked baggage, as long as you adhere to size and weight restrictions. In this case, we recommend packing a portable, compact umbrella to avoid any potential hold ups during a security screening.

Staying dry and comfortable on your next adventure takes a lot more than just investing in a travel umbrella, especially if you're visiting cities and countries known for incremental weather. These simple, versatile items will help you tackle any and all elements (without taking up too much precious luggage real estate) so that you can enjoy your vacation no matter the forecast.

Hunter Short Women's Rain Boot : Fitted with a slip-resistant sole, these lightweight rain boots provide the right amount of traction on both wet grass and pavement. Despite being "short," they're still high enough to block out any puddle splashes.

They're coated with Carhartt’s Storm Defender waterproof breathable membrane, which kept our feet dry while trodding through rainy sidewalks and into big, deep puddles.

Outdoor Research Aspire Women's Super Stretch Jacket : This lightweight, breathable, ultra-comfy jacket keeps water out while allowing for a full range of movement. It's very compact and can easily be folded away in a suitcase or backpack.

Order Processing:

Most orders are shipped out typically same day or within 48 hours. All orders are shipped from our warehouse in San Diego, California. We do not process orders on weekends.

In very rare cases, 1% of the time, we get customers that email us stating they have not received their order after it has been posted as "Delivered" by USPS/selected carrier. In most of these cases, the postal courier has placed the package inside the mailbox (rather than the front door) as many of our packages are in mailers and not boxes. If you have not received your package and it has been posted as delivered in tracking, please check your mailbox first, then contact the courier directly as only they can connect you with the courier that delivered or marked delivered the package. Unfortunately, we have no control of USPS or the package once it leaves us so if it has been marked as delivered we must take USPS's word that it has been. If you contact them we have never had an unresolved issue of it still being missing.

For promo discounts , if missed at time of purchase, it is no issue at all. However, we ask that you please email us within 24 hours of placing the oder in order for us to manually apply it. If an order has already been shipped, then discount code will no longer apply in retrospect.

For domestic shipments, you should expect a notification when package has successfully been delivered. If for any reason you do not find the package soon after receiving delivery notice, we recommend  that you wait until end of business day, sometime even 24 hours after. Our customers have experienced discrepancies between the time such notification is sent out and the actual delivery time of package. Please make sure your package was not picked up by someone else at your residence. We also recommend that you check with your local postal delivery person, just in case, and feel free reach out to our customer service so that our team is also aware of the issue. We recommend that you do so within 24 hours from the time delivery notification is sent out.

Standard Shipping Fees: Typically $4.99. Possibly more depending on carrier of choice

We find that most of our customers receive their purchases within 3-5 business days of processing. We ship standard orders using USPS First Class Mail.

Expedited shipping cost varies for domestic US shipping destinations. Expedited shipping typically takes up to 4 business days to arrive.

Please note:  we cannot guarantee shipping speed/timeframe, nor influence the process with the USPS. Our guarantee is fast processing time, and that we will upgrade the shipping speed to Priority, per the order request. Should you decide to pay for expedited shipping, and package is delayed, we are not responsible nor liable. as a result, we do not issue shipping refunds on all expedited shipments, unless it was delayed by Sungrubbies team.

International Customers

International Orders are welcomed. Shipping charges default to carrier charges which are presented during the checkout process. You will be prompted to select the most suitable option between all available carriers.

If you have any questions email [email protected].

If your country does not show as an option during shipping, please send us an email at [email protected] and we will see if we can accommodate shipping to your destination. Not all destinations can be shipped to.

Lastly, please note that you will be responsible for any customs/VAT/duties, if applicable, at the time of delivery. In many cases, if a consumer refuses to pay the taxes associated with the transaction it gets rejected and sent back to us. We would not refund the shipping charges we incurred if a package is rejected for nonpayment of duties/taxes owed.

Customs, duties and other fees assessed by the destination country for an item can NOT be paid to the United States Postal Service® when the item is mailed. The recipient of the mail-piece is the only one who can pay the customs fees.

All items entering a foreign country are subject to customs inspection and assessment of duties, taxes, and fees in accordance with that country's national laws (this fee is also collected in the United States on inbound international items). Customs duties and taxes are assessed, generally, if the item sent is dutiable and if the value of the item is above the threshold set by the country's laws. Each country assesses customs, duties, and taxes. Check the World Customs Organization website for general information, or visit the website of that country's customs service.

It is important to understand that, if duties and taxes are assessed on an item mailed via the Postal Service™, they are collected from the recipient. Postage is charged to cover the expense of delivery only. Postage does not cover charges assessed by customs in the destination country.

It is also important to keep in mind that packages may be delayed due to customs or even local carriers, which in most cases is out of our control. In fact, due to the limited tracking available in many countries, we find very little information as to what is happening in real time with some of these package.

So far so good!

I ordered this umbrella because I have hyperpigmentation and use a big hat for sun protection. As the days got hotter, wearing a hat became unbearable and a hat did not give me the option to put my hair up because it is so tight. Enter this umbrella. It's perfect. I can wear my hair in a high pony and my head is cooler without a heavy straw hat. The umbrella came in a timely manner and is just as described.

Great sun protection!

This umbrella was great for protecting me from the sun and keeping me cooler during a heat wave.

Excellent quality - it does a great job!

Wonderful. Much much better at protecting me from the sun than a regular umbrella for the rain.

I'm excited to have this sun umbrella. I've tried using regular rain umbrellas to shield the sun but they don't actually work. This is well made and I like the features. I plan to use it all the time.

Love this sun umbrella

Very handy and effective for staying cooler while walking the dog during the summer.

Best UV Umbrellas for Sun Protection: Portable Shade In Your Hands!

Umbrellas are for more than just rain – many provide great protection against UV rays. However, you need the right umbrella for true sun protection.

Can umbrellas really provide adequate sun protection? How exactly do they work?

While sunscreen is still the most effective and reliable protection against the sun, sun umbrellas are a great alternative when you don’t feel like re-applying on a sunny day. Plus, in addition to protecting against UV rays and reducing your risk of skin cancer and melanoma, sun umbrellas can also provide shade that keeps you cooler and more comfortable in the heat of the day.

In this article, we’ll discuss how to choose a sun-protective umbrella and review some of the best options we’ve found online!

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Sun Protection Umbrella

When choosing an umbrella for sun protection, remember that shade coverage alone is not enough – you’ll want to ensure that the umbrella has a good UPF rating. Usually 50+ UPF is a good starting point, as 50 UPF protects against 98% of the sun’s rays .

Size & Shade Coverage

When you’re selecting an umbrella to use for sun protection, be sure that it’s large enough to provide adequate shade coverage . For your umbrella to block the maximum amount of UV rays, choose a wide umbrella with a large canopy made from fabric that blocks UVA and UVB.

sun canopy umbrella

Some umbrellas even have additional panels that can fold down to increase the shade coverage area for a group of people.

Materials & Fabric

Look for umbrella fabrics made of polyester, nylon, or polyester-nylon blends. These materials are UV resistant and provide great sun protection. Many sun umbrellas also boast double canopies for extra sun-blocking capabilities.

The umbrella fabric should be tightly woven in order to block more UV light . If you primarily value aesthetics, a parasol might be a better choice for you, as parasols feature beautiful, elegant pattern work. The downside is that parasols are often made of thinner materials and don’t boast the same level of UV protection as sun umbrellas do.

umbrella weave

While sun umbrellas can come in a wide array of colors and patterns, the best umbrellas will have a light-colored canopy that is designed to reflect UV rays.

Choose a fabric with a tight or medium weave, and bright colors like yellow, red, blue, or other bright shades that will reflect UV light.

Angle Adjustment

If you’re looking for a sun-proof umbrella that will usually be stationary (as opposed to holding the umbrella in your hand), you may want to consider choosing an umbrella that can be adjusted and tilted to different angles.

A movable umbrella canopy allows you to easily adjust the umbrella angle based on the direction of sunlight and how much coverage is needed in a certain area.

Umbrella Weight & Portability

When shopping for a sun umbrella, choose an umbrella that’s lightweight and portable yet large enough to provide shade coverage for you and your family.

Some umbrellas are specifically designed to provide enough shade coverage for two or more people. The drawback of course is that these umbrellas are bulkier and less portable.

Handle and Frame

You’ll want to choose an umbrella that has a comfortable, ergonomic handle and a sturdy umbrella frame, especially if you’ll also be using the umbrella for rain or in storms.

Are Umbrellas a Good Source of Sun Protection?

UV radiation is a major risk factor for skin cancer, including melanoma. It’s important to protect the delicate skin on your face, head, hands, and arms from UV radiation.

The umbrella can be used as a method of easy sun protection that protects these vulnerable areas especially well. It’s an especially great alternative for running errands or short walks when you don’t feel like applying sunscreen and forgot your sun hat .

sun umbrella

However, it’s worth noting that the umbrella cannot block all UV exposure, and won’t provide the same amount of protection as sunscreen or UPF clothing would . Still, you’ll still be getting a solid amount of sun protection by using a sun umbrella, and it’s a much faster and easier method of protection.

Using an umbrella for sun protection is much better than being outside with no sun protection at all. If you feel like more coverage is needed, try using sunscreen on exposed areas or wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants.

The 6 Best UV Umbrellas, According To A Dermatologist

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

travel sun umbrella

When you need protection from the sun, “seek out umbrellas that have a UPF rating, which refers to the Ultraviolet Protection Factor,” recommends Marisa Garshick, M.D., a dermatologist with MDCS Dermatology in New York City. “UPF values of >40, 45, 50, 50+ offer excellent protection, protecting against 97.5 - 98% of UV rays.” Beyond UPF rating, look for larger umbrellas, which block more rays than smaller ones (whether you choose a beach-sized or handheld umbrella), and think about whether you’d prefer your umbrella to have a black or reflective coating.

What Criteria To Consider

Umbrellas designed for sun protection typically use lightweight polyester or nylon with a black or reflective coating to block rays. Without this coating, ordinary polyester or nylon umbrellas only block 77% of UV radiation . However, the coating you choose depends on your priorities. Dr. Garshick notes that “black coating may offer higher UPF protection and is less likely to peel off” than reflective coating. That said, while reflective coating may eventually peel, it also “keeps the area under the umbrella cooler, particularly when the weather is very hot.” So, umbrellas with a reflective coating are ideal when you’re looking to keep cool as well as protected.

When it comes to the size of your umbrella, know that bigger is better for UV protection. Handheld umbrellas range from 23 to 68 inches, and you should err on the larger side when you can. A lightweight, collapsible umbrella helps make wider canopy sizes more manageable. Though beach umbrellas are usually bigger than handheld ones, you should still look for the most coverage possible, which could simply mean taking care to sit toward the center of the umbrella. The closer you sit to the edge of the shade, the less protection the umbrella provides .

Beach umbrellas tend to provide UV protection from overhead, but your umbrella may also need an adjustable pole or side flaps that form a beach canopy for continued protection as the sun’s angle changes. In windy areas, windproof umbrellas usually feature a double-canopy design that prevents the umbrella from inverting.

Whether you’re walking through the city or lounging on a beach, these UV umbrellas with high UPF ratings will keep you safe from sunburns and skin damage — but, Dr. Garshick notes, “while an umbrella is a helpful addition to protect against UV exposure, it may not provide sufficient protection for extended exposure,” so it’s always good to use a dermatologist-recommended sunscreen , too.

1. A Portable UV Umbrella With A Wide Canopy

Best Portable UV Umbrella With A Wide Canopy

With a 42-inch diameter and a reflective coating that provides UPF 50+ protection, the Umenice UV umbrella casts ample shade and helps keep you cooler on scorching hot days, too. The portable design collapses down to less than 12 inches long so it can fit easily in a handbag or backpack. There’s also a handy wrist strap.

With a carrying case, a comfort grip handle, and an automatic open button, this is a convenient on-the-go design, so you’ll always have sun protection at hand when you’re out and about. Plus, you can pick from a handful of different designs.

Sun protection: UPF 50+ | Coating: Reflective | Canopy size: 42 inches

One reviewer wrote: “ Having a heat wave in SoCal and received this just in time. I am often out walking or dining outside, and this umbrella completely blocked the suns rays. It’s also cute with the slight pink interior.”

2. A Beach Umbrella With Side Panels For Extra UV Protection

Best UV Beach Umbrella With Side Panels

This unique UV umbrella from Sport-Brella is a great pick for beach days and outdoor hangouts. The reflective coating on the durable polyester canopy provides UPF 50+ protection and helps keep you cool when the sun is bearing down in the process.

The 53-inch canopy expands to give you a total of 8 feet of shade coverage when you put the side flaps down. These flaps can be held in place with the included ground stakes to provide all-around coverage that doesn’t require adjusting as the sun moves in the sky. It also has a tilting mechanism so you can aim your shade perfectly, as well as a twisting auger on the base of its pole to easily anchor it to the sand.

Though this may compromise the side sun protection, the canopy has mesh side windows on either side that you can open to create airflow when you need extra help staying cool. These windows along with the double canopy design also prevent the umbrella from blowing down in strong winds since wind gusts can pass through the umbrella instead of catching on it.

Sun protection: UPF 50+ | Coating: Reflective | Canopy size: 53 inches

One reviewer wrote : “Very happy with this purchase. So simple to set up and LOVE that it can be either a regular umbrella or a half tent.”

Also available on: Walmart , $39, and DICK’S Sporting Goods , $60

3. A Budget-Friendly All-Weather UV Umbrella

Best Cheap UV Umbrellas

For less than $10, this affordable UV umbrella from ABCCANOPY uses a long-lasting black glue coating to provide UPF 50+ protection in a convenient collapsible design. The 40.5-inch canopy is large enough to provide plenty of shade for one person, and the thick, multilayered fabric provides added UV protection while also making this umbrella extra durable.

The compact umbrella is also waterproof and has flexible resin-coated fiberglass ribs that make this a good pick for windy or rainy climates as well. The all-weather design works in any season so you can keep UV rays off you no matter what time of year it is. Choose from several solid-colored picks, or some with vibrant designs.

Sun protection: UPF 50+ | Coating: Black | Canopy size: 40.5 inches

One reviewer wrote : “It's an adorable design, and it's compact and suitable for sun and rain—great little umbrella.”

4. A UV Umbrella That Mounts To Your Beach Chair

Best UV Umbrella For A Beach Chair

The Versa-Brella from Sport-Brella boasts a UPF 50+ rating (thanks to a reflective coating underneath) and a universal clamp that makes this great for beach days or just a long, lazy day of relaxing outdoors. Mount it to a chair or put it on a stroller, golf cart, or anything else with a place to clamp this umbrella.

The broad asymmetrical canopy is 38 inches by 39 inches so there’s plenty of shade coverage. It also has a 360-degree swivel joint near the top so you can adjust the angle of the umbrella as needed to keep the sun off even as it moves.

The popular UV umbrella has earned 4.3 stars on Amazon overall after more than 45,000 reviews. It also comes in nine different colors and an extra-large size that’s 44 inches wide and 44 inches long.

Sun protection: UPF 50+ | Coating: Reflective | Canopy size: 38 x 39 inches

One reviewer wrote : “They thought of everything with this one and the umbrella can be manipulated in which ever way to get proper sun coverage no matter which way the sun is directing. Love it and would recommend to friends and family!”

Also available on: Walmart , $39, DICK’S Sporting Goods , $22

5. A Windproof UV Umbrella

Best Windproof UV Umbrella

An extra-large canopy that measures 52 inches in diameter (with a 62-inch arc) provides UPF 50+ protection with this UV umbrella from G4Free . The dense fabric is a thick barrier that is made even more protective with the addition of a silver reflective coating that repels UV rays away from you.

The double canopy design and durable yet flexible fiberglass ribs also make this a great option for windy days. The double-canopy allows air to pass through to prevent the umbrella from inverting. But if winds are strong enough that it inverts, the fiberglass frame can simply be flipped back down into shape without breaking like other frames do.

Thanks to that reflective coating, this umbrella can help you stay cooler, and you can also choose between three sizes to find the right balance of portability and coverage. Go down to a 54-inch arc if you want something a little easier to carry, or up to a 68-inch arc if you want an even wider shade area for your handheld umbrella.

Sun protection: UPF 50+ | Coating: Reflective | Diameter: 45, 52, and 59 inches (arc measurements: 54, 62, and 68 inches)

One reviewer wrote: “I love playing golf and when I’m at the practice range, I’m there for 3+ hours. I wanted this umbrella to block the UV rays while I’m there and it does a great job. I have a push cart and the handle fits perfectly in the holder. While under it, the temp is at least 10° cooler. It also holds very well on a breezy day.”

6. An Adjustable Beach Umbrella

Best UV Beach Umbrella

This classic beach umbrella offers UPF 50+ protection and a 7-foot canopy that can be adjusted as needed to keep the sun out no matter where in the sky it is. This beach umbrella uses polyester fabric with a silver coating to block harmful rays.

An air vent near the center creates airflow and adds wind resistance without reducing the UV-blocking powers of the umbrella. The adjustable pole can be easily tilted to block the sun with the push of a button, and it comes with an anchor to keep it firmly in place in the sand. It’s available in eight beachy color combinations.

Sun protection: UPF 50+ | Coating: Reflective | Canopy size: 84 inches

One reviewer wrote: “After years of frustration with different types of beach umbrellas blowing away in average windy days, I chose this model because of the screw-in base and sturdy construction. It lives up to its promise as a heavy wind beach umbrella. Easy to assemble and provides plenty of shade for two people. Highly recommend.”

Dimensions: ‎7.6" x 4.84" x 2.09" | Weight: 6.7 oz.

When we tested the Totes mini umbrella, we found that it provided good coverage and was compact enough to fit into small purses and bags. While we are fans of this lightweight pick, it is a manual umbrella so you can't open and close via a button. Still, our evaluation found it to be a durable pick and we like the easy-to-grip rubber handle. Choose from seven cute patterns, including polka dots and cheetah print. One five-star review writes, "I took this on my trip to Italy and it worked perfectly without taking up much space in my bag. Love it!"

Dimensions: ‎6.2" x 1.9" x 1.7" | Weight: 8 oz.

Weatherman Travel Umbrella

Travel Umbrella

Although this is one of the more expensive travel umbrellas in our guide, it comes packed with convenient features we love, and can it stand up against gusts of wind. "I’ve used this travel size one a bunch of times and it’s held up really well," says Sachs. We appreciate the auto open/close and comfortable handle plus a wrist strap for easy holding while your hands are full. Despite its small design, the umbrella still provides good coverage. One satisfied shopper writes they took it to Wellington, New Zealand and the Scottish highlands, fairly wet climates, and reported that "it took both total downpours and heavy drizzles with ease."

Dimensions: 13" x 2.5" x 2.5" | Weight: 0.85 lbs

Rifle Paper Co. Garden Party Umbrella

Garden Party Umbrella

At the end of the day, an umbrella is also an accessory. If you want to make a fashion statement — and not lose track of yours in a crowded umbrella stand — opt for an umbrella with a unique pattern. The five available floral patterns plus a cute option with drawings of houses and trees bring classic teardrop and polka dot patterns to a whole new level. A wooden handle adds to the luxe look and the auto open/close mechanism makes for easy use. We haven't tested this model yet, but one five-star review writes: "This umbrella is just gorgeous. The colors are vivid and bright." It isn't the most expensive umbrella on our list, but it is definitely above average in cost.

Repel The Original Portable Travel Umbrella

The Original Portable Travel Umbrella

This Amazon's Choice umbrella has an impressive 72,650 online reviews with an overall 4.5-star rating. One satisfied customer writes, "This umbrella is the best I’ve owned so far. It’s huge and the water slides right off it. You just shake the umbrella and it’s no longer wet." Available in nine colors and packs of one, two, three or four, this Repel umbrella is a popular choice among shoppers — and it's under $25! The brand claims that you can fit it in your pocket or small purse. While we appreciate the size and price point, Lab analysts found it to be less flip-resistant than other models we've tested, with one noting that it inverted during their first time using it.

Dimensions: 11.5" folded | Weight: 15 oz.

Tumi Small Auto Close Umbrella

Small Auto Close Umbrella

While this is the most expensive travel umbrella included in our list, the splurge can be worth it if you travel often for work and need a high-quality product that'll look chic in your work backpack . It opens and closes with the push of a button, and the subtle red accents and reflective trim set it apart. We also like the rubberized carrying strap for a better grip, and it won't absorb water. The luxury umbrella would make a practical gift for the frequent traveler in your life.

Dimensions: 11.25" x 2.75" x 2.5" | Weight: 0.74 lbs

Mini

Davek is a popular brand among umbrella shoppers on Reddit , and the Mini is its smallest model that can fit in a handbag, clutch or pocket. It's available in 10 solid colors and has nice design features like a stylish handle and color-coordinated carry loop. While we appreciate the lightweight design you can store in your bag, we wish that it was more affordable. The frame appears less sturdy than other pricey models and a manual open/close may not be as easy to use compared to an automatic umbrella. That all said, the sleek and minimalistic umbrella fits in the palm of your hand and is nice and sleek.

Dimensions: 7" folded | Weight: 8 oz.

What to consider when buying a travel umbrella

double line break

✔️ Size: A travel umbrella will have a shorter canopy diameter than a full-size umbrella. While you lose some coverage, a smaller model means it takes up less space in your suitcase, purse or work bag. If you have a specific bag you plan to store it in, pay attention to the folded dimensions listed by the manufacturer.

✔️ Weight: Similar to size, travel umbrellas tend to be lighter weight than large umbrellas. This again helps with packing light, but it can mean that the umbrella feels less sturdy and may not hold up as well against rough winds.

✔️ Material: Umbrellas are made of synthetic fabrics (e.g., nylon or polyester) that have waterproof coatings so rain slides off easily.

✔️ Vents: These are small openings in the umbrella's canopy that help wind flow through to decrease the likelihood of your umbrella flips inside out. Note that vents are typically more common in full-size umbrellas.

✔️ Features: There are a few additional features to look out for when choosing the right umbrella for you. When it comes to the opening mechanism, the majority of our top-rated picks have an automatic open/close design so you can simply push a button. A few styles have a manual design that requires you to open and close the umbrella yourself. Another minor feature we like is an included case so you can keep your umbrella covered while traveling.

The one thing that I absolutely never forget to pack: a travel umbrella. No matter where I’m going, except for the Wadi Rum or the Sahara Desert maybe, there’s bound to be some inclement weather. Rain, sleet, thunderstorms; no destination is without them. Having an umbrella on hand allows you to keep your travel plans intact, and even see the sights in some places without all the crowds.

However, the task of picking an umbrella is about as daunting as picking a suitcase . With about a million options to choose from and all of them claiming to be “the best travel umbrella,” it’s no wonder so many just pick the cheapest option and go. However, not all umbrellas are created equally—as anyone who has found themselves with one completely inverted during a torrential downpour will tell you. Below, we’ve rounded up the best of the best travel umbrellas, keeping features like durability, wind-resistance, and size in mind.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Best overall travel umbrella

Image may contain: Tool, Axe, Umbrella, and Canopy

Why we love it : Sturdy, wind-resistant, lightweight, and incredibly compact, the Weatherman travel umbrella is undeniably the best on the market. This umbrella has a serious fanbase, with hundreds of nearly perfect reviews on Amazon. It is surprisingly lightweight, and can easily fit in a carry-on or tote bag . It has an automatic open and close feature, a reinforced fiberglass base, and a water-resistant, Teflon-coated fabric. Plus, it shields winds up to 45 MPH and is tough enough to withstand even the heaviest of rainfall.

Worth noting : There aren’t many things to complain about this umbrella, however, it is a bit pricey coming in at $69. However, with a lifetime warranty, it’s well worth the splurge.

Dimensions:  Open diameter: 38"; Closed length: 12" Weight: 0.85 oz. Carrying sleeve included: Yes

Most compact

travel sun umbrella

Why we love it: When they say mini, they mean mini. The Davek Mini is so small and compact that it fits in the palm of your hand. Measuring less than 7 inches when closed, you can easily stash this umbrella in your carry-on, backpack , or even a jacket pocket. Plus, it weighs less than a pound, making it almost unnoticeable when not in use. Made from reinforced fiberglass, it also comes in 10 bright colors so you can coordinate your umbrella with the rest of your outfit.

Worth noting: Because of its size, the canopy doesn’t provide overwhelming coverage. Additionally, it’s not built for extreme storms and functions best in light showers.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 38"; Closed length: 7"

Weight : 0.8 oz.

Carrying sleeve included : Yes

Best for cities

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Lifejacket, Vest, Shirt, Text, and Label

Why we love it : With a sleek and stylish small wooden or plastic handle, this lightweight umbrella features a wind-defying 8-rib canopy that’s also UPF 50+ certified, meaning it provides adequate sun protection, too. Small enough to walk down the busy streets of Chicago during a rainstorm without the awkward “bump and sideswipe,” it fits easily in a work tote, briefcase, or backpack. Plus, it features an automatic open and close, and comes in over a dozen bright and bold patterns and colorways, making it easy to stand out in a sea of black and blue canopies. It also comes with a five-year global warranty and is pretty affordable at only $40.

Worth noting: It’s small enough to fit in your hand, which means the canopy doesn’t offer premium protection in heavy rainstorms.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 38.1"; Closed length: 21.6"

Weight : 0.76 oz.

Most affordable

Image may contain: Umbrella, and Canopy

Why we love it : You can’t go wrong with this incredibly durable, lightweight, and affordable Repel travel umbrella. With over 36,000 4.5-star Amazon reviews, this is an overwhelming crowd favorite among travelers, worker bees, families, and everyone in between. I tested the durability during a heavy summer rainstorm in Chicago, and it stood up surprisingly well thanks to its 9-rib canopy, heavy-duty Teflon-coated fabric, and non-slip rubber grip. Plus, the automatic open and close feature makes it super easy to go in and out of buildings and restaurants without getting soaked or stuck. Another thing to note was how well it stood up to Chicago’s infamous winds—not bending, flipping, or even flapping during big gusts. The best part? It’s only $27 on Amazon and comes in 10 colors.

Worth noting: We didn’t find any problems with the umbrella, but some reviewers found that it didn’t stand up to heavier winds and isn't as lightweight as other comparable brands.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 42"; Closed length: 11.5"

Weight : 0.93 oz.

Carrying sleeve included : No

Most durable

Image may contain: Umbrella, and Canopy

Why we love it : This heavy-duty umbrella stands up to even the strongest rainstorms, and offers supreme coverage thanks to its patented wind-tip rounded edges, which work like mini umbrellas. It’s also built with a 360-degree spinning canopy which prevents it from breaking when dropped or knocked over. It’s extremely wind-resistant and has been tested to withstand the winds and rains of a category one hurricane. It’s also made from rip-resistant pongee fabric that is also super quick to dry, so you can easily go back indoors without needing a plastic cover.

Worth noting: This umbrella only features six ribs, which means it's smaller than Blunt’s other umbrellas.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 39"; Closed length: 15"

Weight : 0.85 oz.

Best splurge

Image may contain: Canopy, and Umbrella

Why we love it : If looking chic is just as important as staying dry, this is the umbrella for you. Handcrafted by Italian umbrella maker Pasotti, the canopy will stop people in their tracks—with a beautiful tropical pattern in sage, gold, and dark green. When I was walking in downtown Chicago, I had four people stop to ask me about this umbrella (and then a few ask to buy it from me). Although I originally gravitated to this umbrella for its looks, the functionality is why it’s my absolute go-to. The canopy extends 102 centimeters and has a 93 centimeter shaft, meaning I’m not going to get pelted by rain when it’s windy (which is everyday in Chicago).

Worth noting: At $275, this is by far the most expensive on the list.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 40"

Most lightweight

Image may contain: Canopy, and Umbrella

Why we love it : They weren’t kidding when they said this is one of the most lightweight umbrellas on the market, weighing only 8 ounces. Small enough to fit into most purses , carry-ons, totes, and computer bags, this umbrella doesn’t take up any more space than it needs too. One drawback with the size is that you need to activate the canopy manually (no quick release button). However, the handle is sturdy and the canopy provides ample coverage for most light-to-moderate rain storms. I love the fact that it comes in multiple colors and patterns, and the price makes it easy to stock up on a few (only $25 at Amazon).

Worth noting: Due to the size, it’s not super wind-resistant and wouldn’t be a great pick if you’re facing a heavy downpour or storm.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 43"; Closed length: 11.2"

Weight : 7.8 ounces

Best patterns

Image may contain: Canopy, Umbrella, Architecture, Building, House, Housing, Patio, and Patio Umbrella

Why we love it : If you’re someone who buys a bottle of wine based on the label, these umbrellas are for you. Known for its bold, whimsical, and delicate patterns and floral designs, Rifle Paper Company’s umbrellas are true works of art. Each umbrella also features a sleek wooden handle and an automatic open/close feature.

Worth noting: This is not the umbrella to buy if you’re looking for durability, extreme wind resistance, or more bells and whistles. This basic umbrella provides decent coverage in light rain, but isn’t meant for heavy winds or downpours.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 43"; Closed length: 11"

Most wind-resistant

Image may contain: Umbrella, Canopy, and Tent

Why we love it : There’s a reason 81 people have given this umbrella a nearly perfect rating on Amazon—it actually holds up. Sure, it may be a splurge at $159, but it is well worth the price tag when you see how it holds up. Surprisingly compact, the canopy extends 50 inches, giving you extreme protection against even heavy rains. Plus, it’s small enough to fit in a carry-on, backpack, or large tote bag. The fabric is 201-thread count, making it luxurious to touch but also extremely powerful against rain. The best feature is the wind-tension frame system, which can withstand heavy winds and prevent inversion. We tested this against a very blustery 55 MPH wind day in Chicago, and there was barely any flapping or movement at all from the tough canopy.

Worth noting: It’s expensive, but comes with a lifetime warranty and replacement guarantee.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 50"; Closed length: 35"

Weight : 1 lb.

Most sustainable

Image may contain: Umbrella, and Canopy

Why we love it : Shopping sustainably is more important now than ever, and that extends to umbrellas, too. Tote’s recycled umbrella is made from 100 percent Recycled PET plastics, equating to about 7.5 recycled water bottles per umbrella. The handle and strap are also made from all renewable resources, like bamboo and hemp, and the production process uses less water overall. In terms of coverage, the Pet umbrella features Tote’s patented NeverWet invisible coating allowing the rain to drip off the umbrella 4 percent faster, leaving you with a drier umbrella once indoors.

Worth noting: Its compact design makes it easy to travel with, however, doesn’t provide a ton of additional coverage beyond your person.

Dimensions : Open diameter: 43"; Closed length: 11.5"

Weight : 1.15 lbs.

The Best Travel Umbrella To Keep You Dry in 2024

When you’re on the road, the only weather guarantee you can count on is the fact that nobody can predict what’s coming. Forecasts are subject to change, and things can go from sunny to sour in a heartbeat.

For high-spirited travellers, a bit of rain is nothing a good hot choccy can’t fix, but for some of the gear we take with us everywhere we go, a poorly-timed shower can erase hard drives and permanently destroy expensive equipment.

Luckily, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad planning. Travellers ready for anything won’t leave the house without a good Travel Umbrella to better protect their bags, gear, and phone from all sorts of weather.

Even tropical paradises change quickly in the rainy season, and before you know it, the clouds start rolling in. We’ve all felt the feeling of horror as the first few drops land around you and knowing you won’t make it home in time!! This is where a good quality umbrella comes in!!

Carry peace of mind with you wherever you go with one of the best travel umbrellas on the market. These slimline protection fit in any gear bag or campervan and can quickly step in to save the day.

#1 – Best Overall: Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella is our pick for best overall compact travel umbrella.

  • 11.5 inches long
  • 36.5 inches wide

The Repel windproof travel umbrella sets the bar high. This umbrella is lightweight, strong, and even offers fully reversible designs that can withstand windy weather. The repel brand has earned acclaim across the world for its durability and quality design, and this travel umbrella is its flagship model.

Let’s be honest, using an umbrella in blustery weather is a nightmare, but this windproof umbrella with its double canopy can repel strong winds without blowing inside out! When you’re looking for a compact travel umbrella you often have to compromise but here, no way!

Thanks to their lifetime replacement guarantee, this affordable umbrella should be the last one you ever have to buy. In addition, the Repel windproof travel umbrella package comes with a travel case so your rain protection can easily fit into the most miniature carry-on bags.

Taking up less space than a raincoat and providing enough coverage for you and your bags, this top-of-the-line lightweight travel umbrella is a safe choice and it’ll stand up to way more than just light rain.

#2 – Most Portable: HERO Travel Umbrella

HERO Travel Umbrella

Meet the most portable umbrella: HERO Travel Umbrella

  • 13.74 inches long
  • 40 inches Wide

Gunning for the crown is this upstart travel umbrella, a new option that has turned heads as quickly as kept them dry.

We can be heroes with the right equipment in our pocket, and the convenient hardshell case allows your lightweight travel umbrella to be protected while compacting down to fit into even the smallest pack, even a travel purse .

Once unravelled, the travel umbrella promises best-in-class rain coverage thanks to comprehensive and robust ribs and Teflon coverage. Even though it’s one of the most compact umbrellas out there, it will still withstand some strong winds and is a great option if you’re looking for a windproof umbrella.

With the same lifetime guarantee as the Repel windproof travel umbrella, the only reason the HERO travel umbrella isn’t higher on the list is the slightly larger price point. However, travellers looking to invest in an extra splash of coverage can rely on this option to help stay dry. It might just be the only umbrella you’ll have to buy!

#3 – Best Wind Protection: Goothdurs Windproof Travel Umbrella

travel sun umbrella

Our pick for best wind protection is Goothdurs Windproof Travel Umbrella

  • 12.4 inches long
  • 40 inches long

With a simple yet colourful design scheme and top-notch reinforcements in the right places, this windproof travel umbrella is protection made interesting. The umbrella uses a mix of alloy steel and carbon fibre to strengthen its ribs while remaining one of the most lightweight options on the market.

We gave this Goothdurs Umbrella incredibly high rain-resistant ratings thanks to the Pongee material used in the outer layer, also giving the umbrella its signature look. The fabric naturally repels even the strongest showers. With a double canopy, you’re not going to be caught out any time with this compact travel umbrella.

Wrap it all up in the included carrying case and take this compact umbrella wherever the storm finds you. If you’re looking for the best windproof umbrella then you can’t go wrong with this number!

#4 – Most Convenient: LANBRELLA Inverted Umbrella

Glamore Inverted Umbrella

LANBRELLA Inverted Umbrella is one of the most convenient umbrella

  • 42 inches wide
  • 32 inches long

This umbrella thinks a bit differently. The handle slips right over your wrist which allows you easy access to your phone or an ice cream cone while the umbrella is in operation.

When it’s time for storage, you won’t find anything more convenient than LANBRELLAs inside-out design. No one wants a wet umbrella in their backpack!

Flip this umbrella over, and it will completely seal off the damp side of the product from the rest of your possessions until you get home. This umbrella can’t entirely fold in half, but the inverted design still makes it a compact umbrella.

The cherry on top is the luminous band on the outside edges of the otherwise black umbrella that allows you to be spotted quickly crossing dark streets at night. Packed full of new features, there’s something for everyone in this option, making it one of the best umbrellas on the market.

#5 – Most Stylish: Kate Spade Raindrop Travel Umbrella

Kate Spade Raindrop Travel Umbrella

Meet the most stylish umbrella: Kate Spade Raindrop Travel Umbrella

  • 40 inches wide
  • 12.75 inches long

Sometimes it’s worth splurging to look good. Pop-out in a rainstorm with the high-quality coverage provided by this less adventurous travel umbrella. It comes with a convenient wrist strap and automatic open capabilities.

This umbrella can’t fold in half and won’t break any space-saving records, but it doesn’t weigh much more than some of the lightest travel options on the market, and it will provide a splash of much-needed colour on a cloudy day.

#6 – Best Lightweight: Umenice Automatic Travel Umbrella

Umenice Automatic Travel Umbrella

Umenice Automatic Travel Umbrella is our pick for best lightweight umbrella

  • 39 inches wide

This lightweight umbrella still expands for enough coverage to protect two people and is favoured by travellers who take every ounce seriously. Tucked inside its travel case, you can slide this travel umbrella into a purse or jean pocket and carry rain protection everywhere you go. It might just be the best most compact travel umbrella on the market for those packing light.

While it lacks Teflon or other high-performance features to make it a completely windproof umbrella, it’s still made out of steel and fibreglass materials that won’t crumble at the first gust.

Even the most lightweight backpackers can find the space necessary to bring along this compact travel umbrella. If you’re specifically looking for portable umbrellas then this brolly is gonna get the job done.

#7 – Best Casing: BodyGuard Travel Umbrella

BodyGuard Travel Umbrella

Our pick for best casing umbrella is BodyGuard Travel Umbrella

  • 13.3 inches long
  • 37 inches wide

Each rib on your travel umbrella will help to protect you from windy conditions better, so it’s never a bad idea to bring along a few extra. Unlike most travel umbrellas which feature eight ribs, this bodyguard spreads its rain coverage across ten ribs to provide more wind resistance.

The extra ribs better protect the Teflon technology that is spread across the canopy, allowing water to wick off quickly and helping the umbrella dry faster than the competition. Once it’s dried up, it fits nicely inside the included leather case for a fashionable and protected look.

While slightly more expensive than some industry-leading options, this travel umbrella packs plenty of safety features to justify an extra few bucks. You’re really getting a quality umbrella here for the money.

#8 – Most Variety: Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella

Lewis N Clark Travel Umbrella

Lewis N. Clark Travel Umbrella is our pick for most variety umbrella

  • 11 inches long
  • 38 inches wide

Lewis N. Clark surely wished they had the technologies included in this travel umbrella when they first crossed the country, as the rain coverage in this travel tool will make any trip better. The umbrella folds up smaller than some of the best travel umbrellas on the market, and when it’s time to use it, the wide diameter keeps everything dry.

All of this in an affordable package makes the umbrella a no-brainer, and the company’s one-year guarantee will make sure you get your money’s worth. Is it the best compact umbrella on the market? Quite possibly!

You can choose between a variety of fun colours or stick to black. No matter what colour you pick, you’ll have lightweight rain protection that can survive winds up to 30 mph.

#9 – Best Quick Dry: EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella

EEZ Y Travel Umbrella

EEZ-Y Travel Umbrella is one of the best quick dry umbrella

Another option that isn’t trying to do too much, this easy travel umbrella won’t save you from a tropical storm, but it can hold its own in most rain showers. The umbrella has venting technology across the entire double canopy, which allows the umbrella to dry faster than the competition.

This feature also allows wind to blow through without carrying you away. The vented double canopy still folds up to an incredibly compact size, and a reinforced steel frame should last a lifetime.

It’s not as wide as the best umbrellas on this list, but its affordability and variety of protection features still make this quality umbrella a great addition to any travel arsenal.

#10 – Most Affordable: AmazonBasics Automatic Travel Umbrella

AmazonBasics Automatic Travel Umbrella

Our pick for most affordable umbrella is AmazonBasics Automatic Travel Umbrella

  • 11.2 inches long

If you’re not expecting much out of your travel umbrella, you won’t need more than the basics. Amazon has provided enough lightweight features in a compact body to provide a quality travel umbrella as long as you’re not expecting much wind.

The umbrella includes button-operated open and close features and still provides full-sized protection despite rolling up into an 11-inch package. Unfortunately, while slim and protective, you won’t find any durable materials on this product, with a simple steel alloy frame.

It might not be the best umbrella out there, but if you get caught in a drizzle from time to time, having this travel umbrella in your bag will prevent a bad day from getting worse.

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

If you stick around long enough, there’s bound to be some rain. The perfect travel umbrella is small enough that you don’t notice it in your bag for months but is ready to open up and protect you and your gear in a flash.

When it’s time to open up your umbrella, you won’t want to spend your walk home fighting with the wind either. The best umbrella stands up to not only the rain but won’t flip inside out at the slightest breeze!

Strong wind gusts are your umbrella’s worst nightmare, and if you don’t have the right travel umbrella, your protection could be gone with the wind! Think, Mary Poppins gone wrong!

Umbrella companies have taken measures to provide compact but resilient travel companions that offer varying levels of the following characteristics. Great umbrellas balance protection, hardiness, and compactness with keeping the costs down to qualify as a contending product.

Let’s be honest, even if you’ve got the best travel bag out there, you still don’t want to risk it getting soaked wet if it’s got your expensive laptop and travel camera inside!

What’s the point of an umbrella if it is not good at protecting you? Protection should be the deciding factor when you are searching for the perfect travel umbrella.

Every travel umbrella may hold its own in a minor rain shower, but few can handle gale-force winds.

If you’re expecting some foul weather, look for stainless steel frames and ribs that are malleable but resilient.  Blending these frames with Teflon-coated exterior layers or flexible fibreglass allows certain high-tech travel umbrellas to tolerate windy conditions better. Some umbrellas also have a double canopy to allow wind to move through without catching in the canopy.

Travel umbrellas that promise to be windproof can stay in shape through winds up to 60 mph. If you’re experiencing winds any more robust than that, I highly suggest you get inside immediately!

The best brands have battle-tested their brolly’s in various laboratory conditions to prove their worth on a windy day, and others have sacrificed a few high-performance pieces to be extraordinarily lightweight or compact.

Compactness

Every travel umbrella seeks to find the perfect balance between compact size and complete rain protection. You’ll have to decide for yourself how much space in your luggage you’re willing to sacrifice for a larger canopy.

A quality travel umbrella should fold up by telescoping to take up less precious cargo space, squeezing down to packages about a foot long. All of the umbrellas on our list can compact themselves to fit easily in any carry-on luggage.

These compact umbrellas are made lightweight to fit into more bags using light metals and sacrificing some canopy reach compared to an everyday parasol. Look for travel umbrellas to only weigh around one pound, while some of the best-in-class options are closer to half a pound.

Juxtapose the weight with your coverage requirements. Umbrella enthusiasts agree that a 23 inches canopy is the minimum length necessary to protect one person. However, you’ll want your canopy to tack on a few inches if you expect it to guard your bags as well as your body.

Finding the perfect blend to these stats is the recipe for a great travel companion. If your Bumbershoot is too big, it might be tempting to leave it out of your day pack, which could be a fatal mistake.

On the other hand, an umbrella that is too small to protect you and your belongings entirely is useless no matter how little space it takes up.

Whether it’s facing the wind, rain, sleet, or grumpy baggage handlers, you’ll need a travel umbrella that can take a beating. Luckily, some of the most lightweight metals have also proven themselves capable of absorbing a few punches.

Fibreglass steel and Teflon will provide the hardiest protection, followed closely by lightweight aluminium alloy. Ideally, your umbrella will have a combination of a few of these elements that allow it to stay light and strong.

If you don’t want to buy a new umbrella every year, it’s worth investing a few extra dollars into a high-quality product that combines these metals. Cheap substitutes can talk a big game but can often snap after a few weeks in the bottom of your luggage.

Some of the best travel umbrellas on the market take protection a step further by providing a tough yet packable case that makes it easier to safely and compactly store your umbrella.

7 Best Ultralight Hiking Umbrellas (and How to Use)

A guide to the best umbrellas for ultralight backpacking and how to use..

Photo: @tarwoodz

An umbrella may not be one of the top items on your thru-hiking gear list . However, you may want to think twice before counting out this incredibly useful device. Oftentimes, these are NOT junk luxury items. On the contrary, they can be crucial shields while parading through open areas.

With way more uses than the umbrellas actually get credited for, along with being one of the best sun-protection investments you can make for your skin, bringing along this roughly 8-ounce device on your next thru-hike could end up being a real game-changer on the trail.

3 Reasons to Use a Hiking Umbrella

#1 Sun: Protection FROM SERIOUS EXPOSURE

Using a hiking umbrella for sun protection in high exposed areas like tree lines trails, deserts, or long stretches of trails like the Continental Divide Trail can be your skin's saving grace. Not only will the canopy of the umbrella help deflect UV rays, but the shade created by an umbrella has been measured to decrease temps by up to 15 degrees. These cooler temperatures result in a much more enjoyable hike, along with less sweat which means less water loss all around.

#2 Rain: HIGHLY Effective FOR RUNOFF (and Breathable!)

When rain clouds blow in while out on the trail, the first thing you probably do is stop, take off your backpack, and start digging around for your rain jacket . Even though most rain jackets nowadays have improved ventilation and breathability, there are certain conditions where they still fall short.

An umbrella is by far the most breathable piece of rain gear you can own, and the ventilation you get from using an umbrella instead of wearing a rain jacket in hot conditions is unmatched. Say your hiking uphill in 90-degree temps with high humidity and it begins to rain. The last thing you probably want to do is put on more layers when you’re already hot and sweaty. This is where an umbrella really pays off. Using it will not only keep you dry, but you’ll also stay cool and properly ventilated while doing so.

When facing snow or hail, the protective rim of a hiking umbrella will stop precipitation from accumulating on your pack and shoulders. If conditions get really sketchy, your umbrella can even become an instant pop-up micro shelter to shield you when there are none readily available, like on sections of the PCT. This micro-shelter will also come in handy when you need to do things in rain like read a map , eat a meal, or just wait out the crappy weather. Umbrellas are also great wind blockers for starting fires.

#3 RANDOM PROTECTION: Self-Defense And Makeshift Shelter Add-On

Umbrellas aren’t just for protection against the weather. They can also be used as walking canes, spider web clearing devices, defense tools to scare away snakes and other wildlife.

They also make great add-on additions to your tent or shelter. If your tents sprung a leak, an umbrella can act as a rain plug. If your camping somewhere with no trees, it can become the anchor for a tarp beak. And if you’re in a heavy bug area, an umbrella can be used as a DIY bug canopy by draping a bug net over it.

When NOT to Use a Hiking Umbrella: Wind, Lightning and IcE

A hiking umbrella can be a great piece of equipment to have while out on the trail. But just like every vital piece of backpacking equipment, it too has its time and place.

A time when you should NOT use an umbrella is during windy conditions (unless you’re looking to break your umbrella or become the next modern-day Mary Poppins).

Also, it’s not a good idea to open your umbrella when there’s lightning as it is likely to attract it and shock you .

Hiking in icy conditions would be another no-no for umbrella use, as you may need both hands to brace yourself or bust out that ice axe.

Considerations

Type: Full-Size vs. Collapsible

There are two types of hiking umbrellas on the market today: full size (stick) umbrellas, and compact or (collapsible). Full size umbrellas are sturdy and reliable, yet their long-bodied classic design makes them heavier. The compact or “collapsible” umbrella is lighter and smaller than the full-size, but it’s less durable in heavy winds and the collapsible hinges weaken in time.

full-size vs. collapsible ultralight hiking umbrella

Size: Extended Length AND Canopy Diameter

How much coverage do you want from your umbrella? Do you want to be under more of a bubble or a wider arc? Do you want a shorter handle or a longer one? Do you want just your shoulders covered, or most of your body? Take these questions into consideration when looking at the various sizes and builds of umbrellas. And as always, keep in mind that the bigger you go, the more weight you’ll have.

UV Protection: UPF Ratings and Color

Traditional umbrellas only block about ¾ of the sun rays, whereas specially designed sun umbrellas block nearly 99% of UV rays. Most umbrellas have a UPF rating assigned to them, and the color of an umbrella can play a vital role in this. Silver and black canopies are both great in sun protection for different reasons. Silver canopies reflect the sun’s rays away, whereas black canopies absorb them before they can reach you.

Weight: Between 6 and 8 Ounces

Speaking of weight, isn’t adding more weight to your already perfectly pre-planned backpack something you’re trying to avoid? Probably. But since a 6-8 oz umbrella helps with sun, rain, snow, wildlife and can become an instant micro-shelter… the extra few ounces might just be worth it.

Durability: Frame Material and Build

A well-built, quality frame will help keep the umbrella from collapsing or breaking in high winds. Frames made of steel, iron or brass are the strongest, but these materials will rust if stored when wet. Aluminum and fiberglass frames aren’t as strong as the other metals, but they are lighter and they won’t rust.

The “ribs” are important to look at on an umbrella because they are the most common part that breaks. The ribs are the arc-shaped metal pieces that run between the base of the umbrella to the fabric’s tips. They’re typically made from aluminum or steel, and they hold the canopy in place. Most umbrellas have 8 ribs, although this number can vary from 6 to 24. A strong umbrella will usually have a shaft made of steel or iron along with solid “rivets” (pieces that connect the ribs). Not hollow or see-through ones.

best hiking umbrella canopy structure

Canopy Fabric: PVC, Nylon OR Polyester

Buying an umbrella with the correct canopy fabric will ensure that your umbrella dries fast, blocks out the sun, and holds up for the long haul. PVC, Nylon and Polyester are great canopy materials because they’re lightweight, yet still durable.

PVC is a clear vinyl that naturally blocks 99% of direct sunlight and heat. It is the heaviest out of the three fabrics, but is also the most effective in sun, heat and rain protection.

Nylon is stronger than PVC and Polyester; however, being that it’s like silk, it's more prone to abrasion. Nylon is used less today, because it has been found to shrink in humidity which can impact the opening and closing of the umbrella.

Polyester doesn’t shrink in humidity and because it’s extremely lightweight and holds up better than PVC or Nylon to abrasion, it has become the most common material for hiking umbrella canopies today.

PVC is waterproof while Polyester and Nylon are water-resistant. Although Polyester and Nylon don’t absorb water, they will not be 100% waterproof unless applied with a waterproofing agent such as Teflon. A Teflon coating has usually already been applied to Polyester umbrellas when you buy them. This “coating” makes the water pool up and “roll” off the fabric.

Handle: Shape and Material

Shape -  The shape of a hiking umbrella handle can make a difference in how convenient and easy it will be to carry. There are two main handle styles for most umbrellas - the “straight” handle and the U-shape or “hook” handle. Straight handles are more space efficient and are typically adhered with rubber padding for comfort and durability. Hook handles are a more traditional style, and they can be very useful in hanging the umbrella upside down to dry, or even “hooking” to your arm for easy carrying.

Material -  You can find umbrellas with wooden, plastic or EVA hard foam handles. EVA hard foam is the material used in products such as yoga mats and shoe insoles. It’s also commonly used to cover umbrella handles because it’s durable, lightweight, and better yet: soft to the touch. EVA hard foam is a “closed form” structure which pretty much is the scientific way of saying it is moisture and water resistant. Umbrellas with wooden handles are more costly and heavier, whereas plastic handles are the lightest option of the three but less durable and comfortable.

Tips & FAQ

How to attach the umbrella to your pack? The "Hands-Free" Setup.

Having to carry around an umbrella for miles at a time during a thru-hike may not sound very appealing. Especially if you’re a fan of trekking poles, since, you know, you only have so many hands. Lucky for us there are crafty, inventor-like hikers out there that have figured out tactical ways for attaching umbrellas to their packs. Also lucky for us, these crafty individuals have shared their knowledge with the rest of us! That’s right, we too can learn how to hike hands free with our umbrellas.

To do so, all you’ll need 2 shock cord loops with cordlocks. They will allow you to strap the umbrella onto one of your backpack's shoulder straps. One cord loop will hold the shaft while the other will secure the handle.

Where and how to store the umbrella when not in use?

When not using your umbrella, the best place to store it is somewhere on your pack that’s easily accessible, like alongside your water bottle or in another side pocket. The idea is to put it somewhere where you can access it quickly without breaking stride. Another note: It is ALWAYS best to let your umbrella dry out after use. This will help avoid rust, mildew, or any weird smelly build-up.

UL Tip: How to minimize the weight of your ultralight umbrella?

To save you a few unnecessary ounces, you can get rid of the straps and toss out the carrying case of your hiking umbrella. If you only want to use it as an attachment to your pack, you might be able to discard the handle as well as the handle loop. Because every ounce counts!

The Anatomy of an Umbrella

Canopy: Commonly made from Nylon, Polyester or PVC, canopies are the fabric part of the umbrella that form an arc. The canopy stretches to cover the ribs of the umbrella, and the fabric is often treated with a Teflon coating for added waterproofing.

Ribs: You know the wiry pieces of metal that run along from the base of the umbrella to the canopy’s tips? Those are the ribs. Part of the frame, the ribs hold the canopy in place. There are typically 8 made from steel, aluminum, fiberglass or plastic. An umbrella made from steel will be stronger than one made from aluminum or plastic, however it will be heavier and less flexible.

Stretchers: Also made from metal, fiberglass or plastic, this is the part of the umbrella that connects the ribs to the runner. When the runner moves up the umbrella to open the canopy, the stretchers push outward placing pressure on the ribs which create the arc of the umbrella.

Shaft: Usually made from wood, metal or fiberglass the shaft is the “base” of the umbrella. This connects the frame to the handle. Full size umbrellas have one solid shaft, whereas compact umbrellas have shafts that collapse in either one or two spots.

Handle:  It's the part of the umbrella that you hold. It can be straight, curved, cushioned, gripped or covered in non-slip EVA hardfoam. On compact, collapsible umbrellas, you’ll often find that handles run smaller and are plastic.

Best UV Umbrella for Sun Protection

Last updated on April 20, 2023 by Meg Leave a Comment

Best UV Umbrella

You can stand under my umbrella, ella, ella ey. Oh! Hi Guys! Today we are going to explore the world of umbrellas. Yep this is a sun safe blog and, believe it or not, umbrellas are an important part of sun protection.

On overcast days you may not even think about sun protection, but did you know that you can still get sunburnt even when the sun isn’t shining.

When I think about umbrellas my first thought is rain, but when I take a second and think about it, umbrellas and sun are a marriage made in heaven. There are specific umbrellas you take to the beach, ones to place over your pool for shade, and golfers are always using umbrellas!

Before you ask if it is really necessary to use one if you already have on sunscreen – the answer is yes. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied, multiple times, after swimming, before heading outside, I mean look at the common mistakes people make when using sunscreen. In reality, sunscreen should be your last defence after sunglasses , a hat , clothing , and… an umbrella!

Now don’t get me wrong, sunscreen is still a must, but umbrellas also provide something sunscreen doesn’t, shade! Some days it is just simply too hot to be out in direct sun!

You want to take a dip, get the kids outside, or go for a walk but you’re worried you will melt. Well worry no more guys because today we are going on the hunt for the best UV umbrella for sun protection.

Suntek 68” Reflective UV Protection Windcheater Umbrella with Vented Double Canopy (Silver/Blue)

After thorough research into requirements for the best uv umbrella to be effective for sun protection, SimplySunSafe recommends SunTek 68 Inch UV Protection Wind Cheater Vented Canopy Umbrella as the best UV umbrella. Read on for a detailed buyer’s guide, comparison table, and in-depth reviews of the top 5 umbrellas for sun protection.

Buyer’s Guide on UV umbrella for Sun Protection

Let’s make sure you are throwing out some serious shade. When looking for the best sun protection umbrella you are going to want to keep your eyes out for some of the following features:

Large or small can make a big difference in the umbrella world.

  • Do you intend on using it alone or will you be needing one big enough for two?
  • Do you intend on using it in big crowds?
  • Or are you headed out on the golf course?

All of these things will have some impact on what size umbrella you are going to need to look for.

Now firstly, umbrella sizes are measured across the arc rather than the width so make sure you have got your head around that so we can you properly covered. A ‘regular’ umbrella size is between 40 to 50 inches with ‘golf’ umbrellas reaching up to 68 inches!

Before you buy – check your size!

Pardon, a UP what rating?

Let me explain, UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor rating provides important information on how much of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays may penetrate fabric and potentially harm your skin.

It is important to remember, UPF rated items can be ineffective if you don’t use them correctly so it’s important to remember the following:

  • Fabric sun protection items should not be pulled too tight as it may become thin and transparent, resulting in less effective protection.
  • Items may become significantly less effective when it becomes wet.
  • Old items should be replaced as it may lose its ability to protect you from those rays. Go on just buy a new one!

See the table below for further information on UPF ratings:

Material/Make

So you want to buy a sun umbrella and you are a bit baffled by the material options. Check out my list below to help get your head around some of the ones you may come across.

  • Carbon Fibre – strong, sturdy and won’t rust or weather.
  • Fibreglass – built strong and safe for use in storms.
  • Nylon – perfect for protection you from rain and sun.
  • Printed fabric – Let your personality shine through with a bold print or pattern. There is no need to think umbrellas are boring! There are lots of options for you to explore.
  • Plain fabrics – Corporate and classy. Plain print umbrellas are available in a large number of colors.

If you are after an umbrella dedicated to sun use it could be different to an umbrella you want to use in the rain.

A clear bubble umbrella might be perfect for the rain but it isn’t going to much use to you in the sun. Some parasols may be ideal for use in the sun but are horrible for rain protection.

So be sure to decide whether you want an umbrella that can do both or just sun or rain. The last thing I want is for you to get sunburnt or soaking wet!

Manual v Push Button

This is all about how you are going to get your umbrella open and protecting you from the sun.

Some umbrellas will open at the press of a button. Others will require you to push them open yourself. To make the comparison easy here are my pros and cons for both:

Push Button Opening

  • Easy to use (especially for children and the elderly)
  • Fast opening
  • May be more expensive
  • Once broken are difficult to fix
  • May be unable to be used if broken or malfunctioning
  • May cause injuries if opened unexpectedly or by children

Manual Opening

  • Easy to use
  • User controls opening and closing
  • May be cheaper
  • Can be fiddly and tricky especially for younger children or the elderly
  • Requires some coordination and hand strength

Umbrella prices can range anywhere from pocket change into the hundreds of dollars for some brands.

You want to look for a quality umbrella that isn’t going to fall apart on you in your hour of need, or flip inside out on a hot windy day (come on I know you have seen this happen before!).

It’s always ideal to look for a quality umbrella within your budget to start off with, but if you think a higher priced umbrella will provide a better quality then don’t be afraid to spend a little extra.

FAQs on Umbrella for Sun Protection

Q: what is a uv umbrella.

A: A UV umbrella is a shield that provides protection from the sun’s rays. Protective UV umbrellas are made from special fabrics such as polyester and acrylic that block harmful UV rays. These umbrellas ensure to protect your skin from sun damage on sunny as well as cloudy days.

Q: How effective are UV umbrellas?

A: UV umbrellas can provide moderate protection from UV radiation. They work by blocking more than three-quarters of ultraviolet (UV) light on a sunny day. Pair your UV umbrellas with sunscreen and hats; you will have maximum protection against sun damage.

Q: Why is UV umbrella more effective in blocking UV rays than ordinary umbrella?

A: An ordinary umbrella is mostly used as protection from rain, hail, or snow. However, a UV Umbrella is used to block and protect you from the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UVR) which are responsible for the harmful effects of skin cancer.

A common misconception about a UV Umbrella is that it can be made out of any material since it only protects against the sun’s rays and has little to do with blocking water drops. The truth, though, is that blocking sunlight isn’t enough on its own to prevent harm coming from UVR. That’s why UV umbrellas come with a UPF rating printed on them alongside their style name, so you know how well they actually protect against UVR.

Q: Can you still get sunburned using a UV umbrella?

A: Although some people think that a sun umbrella will protect them from the harshness of sunlight, this is not true. The reflective quality of light makes it impossible for any physical object to completely obstruct its rays.

This means that although you are in the shade, there is still an increased risk for skin damage and potential cancer due to UV exposure under your arm or around your neck, where most umbrellas don’t typically cover those areas. Be sure to always wear sunscreen when outside so as not to put yourself at unnecessary risks!

Ukraine war latest: Extra security at 'extremely exposed' nuclear plant - as Moscow takes action against US newspapers

Russian officials are stepping up security measures at a nuclear plant in Kursk, where Ukrainian forces have seized land. Meanwhile, Moscow has banned entry to more than 20 US journalists. You can watch the United Nations Security Council meeting in the stream below.

  • Your questions answered: Can Ukraine advance further inside Russia?
  • Reporting by Bhvishya Patel

The fear of escalation by Western allies is the "biggest problem" faced by Kyiv as it battles Russia, Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba has said.

"Ever since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, the biggest problem Ukraine has been facing is the domination of the concept of escalation in the decision-making processes among our partners," Mr Kuleba said.

The Ukrainian minister made the comment during a conversation with Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski.

He also said: "The war is always about a lot of hardware: money, weapons, resources but the real problems are always here, in the heads.

"Most of our partners are afraid of discussing the future of Russia. This is something that is very upsetting because if we do not speak about the future of the source of threat, then we cannot build strategy."

Ukraine has relied heavily on the West to supply it with weapons and hardware and financial assistance to hold out against Russia.

But Kyiv is pushing the West to give it the long-range weapons - and the authorisation - to strike targets deep inside Russian territory. It also wants help shooting down incoming missiles.

The United Nations Security Council are meeting to discuss the latest situation in Ukraine.

It comes after a Russian missile struck Volodymyr Zelenskyy's home town of Kryvyi Rih today.

You can watch the meeting in the stream above.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that a Russian airstrike earlier in the day on the eastern town of Kupyansk had resulted in some deaths, without providing a number.

The Ukrainian leader has also said in his nightly address that the West should lift restrictions on long-range airstrikes by Ukraine because it would help end the war.

"There was a strike with a guided aerial bomb on Kupyansk - right in the city centre, people were under the rubble. Unfortunately, there are fatalities," Mr Zelenskyy said.

Kupyansk, which is located 22 miles from the border with Russia, was hit in the afternoon, local officials said.

The strike injured 14 people and damaged the building of the city hall, the regional prosecutor's office wrote earlier on the Telegram messaging app.

Russian TV has begun filming for a fictionalised comedy series in which Joe Biden travels to Russia undercover.

The drama will centre around the US president travelling to the country to find out "why sanctions aren't working against Russians", the Moscow Times reports, citing the Russian television channel TNT.

While in Russia, Mr Biden loses his passport and ends up living in a Soviet-era flat and working as an English teacher so he can make money and return home.

Russian actor Dmitriy Dyuzhev is set to play the role of Mr Biden.

The comedy, which is entitled Goodbye, is set to premiere next year.

Russia has banned entry to 92 US citizens, including journalists, lawyers and the heads of what it claims are key military and industrial firms upholding "Washington's Russophobic stance".

The list, published on Telegram by Moscow's foreign ministry, includes 14 Wall Street Journal employees, five New York Times journalists and four from the Washington Post.

The ministry said it was targeting editorial staff and reporters from "leading liberal-globalist publications" involved in producing and disseminating what it described as "fakes" about the Russian armed forces.

It comes weeks after the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was freed by Moscow in an extensive prisoner swap after nearly 500 days in a Russian jail on espionage charges.

The ministry wrote: "In response to the Russophobic course pursued by the Biden administration with the declared goal of 'inflicting a strategic defeat on Moscow', an integral part of which has become 'carpet' sanctions against Russian politicians, representatives of the business community, scientists and cultural figures, journalists and media structures, entry into the Russian Federation is permanently closed for 92 US citizens."

For context : This is not the first time the Kremlin has banned dozens of media representatives from the West.

Since launching its war in Ukraine, it has cracked down on Russian and foreign independent news outlets.

Legislation was also introduced soon after the war to criminalise media outlets spreading "false information" about the Russian army.

Additional security measures will be introduced at Kursk's nuclear plant from tomorrow, authorities in the region have said.

The measures will see the entrance to the town of Kurchatov, where the plant is located, temporarily restricted, Alexei Smirnov, acting governor of the Kursk region, wrote on Telegram .

"Despite the fact that the security of the Kursk nuclear power plant is maximally ensured, the armed forces of Ukraine do not abandon their attempts to enter the city," he said.

"In this regard, and also in order to ensure additional security measures, the operational headquarters has decided to restrict entry to Kurchatov in the near future."

The statement comes after Russian troops claimed they had defused an unexploded US-supplied missile that was shot down and found near the Kursk nuclear facility (see post at 10.15am).

What do we know about the plant?

Yesterday, nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi issued a warning about the danger of a nuclear accident at Kursk's nuclear power plant.

Mr Grossi said the plant's nuclear reactor was "extremely exposed" to attack and the facility lacked the containment dome and protective structure that is typical of modern nuclear power stations.

"This is why we believe that a nuclear power plant of this type, so close to a point of contact or a military front, is an extremely serious fact that we take very seriously," he said.

Russian forces are making significant advances in the direction of the key mining city of Pokrovsk.

Moscow sees taking control of the city as an important stepping stone to annexing the entire Donbas region.

Just to the west of the city is its coal mine, which is the only place in Ukraine that produces high-quality coking coal, critical for the steel industry and war effort.

Pokrovsk also lies on a key road used by the Ukrainian military to supply other embattled outposts.

During the first year of the war, the city was considered the safest place in the Donbas, with the frontline then 30 miles away.

Now, Russian advances mean that, at the current rate, there are strong fears that the city could fall in the coming weeks.

Ukrainian officials have given residents two weeks to evacuate, with lives bundled into suitcases and people placed on trains heading away from the region.

How can Ukraine hold the city?

Kyiv had hoped that its surprise invasion of the Kursk region of Russia would divert troops away from Pokrovsk.

But, speaking yesterday, Ukraine's top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said Moscow had understood its aims and had continued to focus its efforts on Pokrovsk.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Ukraine would "further strengthen" its forces in the region after warning the situation was "difficult".

But, if Kyiv's forces can hold out, time could be on their side.

Analysts have pointed out that it will be difficult for Vladimir Putin to maintain momentum during the winter months, so he has around 10-12 weeks to achieve his objectives before the winter weather settles in.

An oil depot in Russia's western region of Kirov has been attacked by Ukrainian drones, sources have told the Kyiv Independent .

Russian air defences shot down two drones today while three others "fell" and started a fire near the Zenit oil facility, according to reports.

Sources say the attack caused a fire at two oil tanks.

No casualties have been reported.

"The target is located more than 1,200km [745 miles] away from Ukraine's border," a source told the news outlet.

"The Zenit oil depot is a facility of the enemy military-industrial complex and provides fuel to the Russian occupation forces."

Sky News cannot verify these claims.

For context : Ukraine has been ramping up drone strikes in Russia, targeting oil refining and storage facilities in particular.

Earlier, we reported that an oil depot in Russia's Rostov region was hit overnight and that three tanks were burning at the depot in the Kamensky district after two drones fell on the area (see post at 6.21am).

Looking at why Ukraine may be doing this, our  military analyst Sean Bell  noted that Russia generates huge revenues by exporting that oil.

Therefore, by damaging the facilities, you reduce the revenues, which reduces Russia's ability to fund the war.

The deputy director of the CIA says it will be difficult for Russia to regain the territory it has lost to Ukraine in the Kursk region.

Speaking at the intelligence and national security summit in Washington, David Cohen said the significance of the Kursk invasion "remains to be seen".

While Kyiv has said it has no intention of annexing the area it has captured, Ukrainian troops are building defensive lines and it appears that they intend to retain "some of that territory for some period of time," Mr Cohen said.

"We can be certain that Putin will mount a counteroffensive to try to reclaim that territory," he added.

"I think our expectation is that that will be a difficult fight for the Russians."

He also said that Mr Putin will have to "deal with reverberations back in his own society" over the loss of Russian territory.

Ukraine has claimed the capture of 100 settlements in the Kursk region, while Russian forces continue to inch forward in the eastern Donetsk region.

Moscow has dismissed Volodymyr Zelenskyy's suggestion that Kyiv will submit a plan to Washington on how to end the war.

Ukraine's president said yesterday that the invasion would end with dialogue, but that Kyiv needed to be in a strong position for this.

He said he would present a plan to Joe Biden and his two potential successors, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Responding to this, the Kremlin said Moscow would carry on fighting.

"This is not the first time that we have heard such statements from representatives of the Kyiv regime," Dmitry Peskov said.

"We are aware of the nature of this Kyiv regime. We are continuing our special military operation and will achieve all of our goals."

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
