The 15 Biggest Travel Scams, and How to Avoid Them

You know that old saying “there’s a sucker born every minute”? Don’t be one of them. Stay ahead of these surprisingly effective travel scams to keep your vacation plans from falling apart. The schemes below may be just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to travel cons, but preparing yourself for these common swindles is a good place to start.

Vacation Clubs

Wholesale travel clubs claim that you’ll have access to incredibly cheap vacations if you join. However, once you pay the joining fees, you find that the deals offered aren’t any better than what you can find for yourself online—for free. Consumer advocate Christopher Elliott , whose book Scammed lays out a helpful roadmap for being a responsible and effective shopper in a world of corporate swindles, has told SmarterTravel: “I’ve never come across a legitimate travel club. My advice is to run, don’t walk.”

Elliott advises that anyone considering joining a travel club do research with a very critical eye beforehand. Simply doing an internet search for the name of the travel company plus “travel scam” will usually reveal a host of problems experienced by other members. Also check the Better Business Bureau for complaints about the specific service before you buy.

Timeshare Sales

Ed Perkins, a longtime contributing editor at SmarterTravel, calls the up-front fees for selling your timeshare the biggest travel scam out there.

“Scammers promise to get you out from under, saying they have buyers, but all they really do is take a fee, upward of $400, and do nothing,” says Perkins.

Never pay up front to have someone help you sell your timeshare. If you want out, go to a licensed company and check them out with the Better Business Bureau before listing with them. If you’re having trouble getting out of your timeshare , work with a rental company and rent it out to recoup some of the money until you can sell.

Vacation Certificates

Ed Perkins also warns against prepaid vacation certificates: “Travel scams promise really great prices but deliver nothing. The idea here is to get the up-front money, then keep stalling: ‘Sorry, these dates are sold out; try again soon.’ They delay until people just quit trying.” Or the company charges huge additional fees to redeem the certificates, and the trip is considerably less luxurious than promised. Before prepaying for a vacation package, be sure to research fees and blackout dates, as well as the company’s reputation.

“Travel-Agent” Card Mills

Ah, the life of travel agents. Cheap hotels and airfares are thrown at their feet once they pull out their travel-agent ID cards, right? Wrong. Don’t believe the hype from outfits that promise to issue you a travel-agent ID that provides access to discounts. Scammers charge hundreds of dollars for these cards, but victims who shell out will quickly find that no place will accept the fakes, and they never see any discounts. The only way to avoid this travel scam is to not buy a travel-agent card if you’re not a travel agent—there’s really no legal way to get around it.

Car-Rental Collision Damage Waivers

Rick Steves calls the car-rental collision damage waivers (CDW) a “collision damage waiver racket” for a reason. When you rent a car, the company often pressures you to buy a CDW supplement, which will prevent you from having to pay a high insurance deductible if the car is damaged. (The deductible can be thousands of dollars before insurance kicks in.)

But most major credit cards already include deductible collision coverage for free , so check your credit-card terms and pay for the rental car with your credit card. Then you’ll be covered without having to shell out extra cash for phony insurance. Most credit-card collision coverage is secondary, meaning you have to claim from your regular insurance first. If you don’t want a claim on your insurance, you can buy third-party primary collision coverage from the booking agency for about $10-$11 a day. Or, if it’s pricey, you can instead buy coverage from an independent outlet; sites like Bonzah.com offer rental coverage from $7.99 per day. That’s about one-third of what the rental companies charge.

“You Won a Free Trip!”

If you’ve ever dropped your business card in a “win a free trip” drawing at a restaurant or signed up to win at a fair, you may have gotten a phone call, letter, or email claiming you’ve won a free vacation. These days, the hustle is often via robocall. Be wary—many of these “prizes” are actually booby traps in which you’ll have to pay hefty fees to claim the vacation or give your credit card number to “verify your eligibility,” resulting in identity theft. After a recent lull in monitoring these robocalls, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is again cracking down on them. If you’re scammed, get the names of resorts and airlines included in the prize and call them independently to verify the trip. Never give credit card information to someone who cold-calls you, and be sure to get details of the prize in writing before accepting.

Fake International Driving Permits

The FTC also warns against fake International Driving Permits (IDPs) . Some countries require tourists to have an IDP in addition to a U.S. driver’s license. However, there are only two American associations that are legally authorized to issue IDPs—the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). Fraudulent companies sell fake IDPs over the Internet, but you’ll pay hundreds of dollars for a permit only to face legal problems for using the imposter IDs in another country.

The Bait and Switch

The hotel you’re thinking of booking is suspiciously cheap, but the property’s website makes it look beautiful and centrally located. When you arrive, the hotel is run-down, missing amenities, and in a deserted part of town—and it won’t refund your money. Avoid this travel scam by using websites like Oyster (one of SmarterTravel’s sister sites) and TripAdvisor (SmarterTravel’s parent site) to read real customer reviews and see honest photos of the property.

“Grandparent” Travel Scams

Even if you’re not currently traveling, you can still be the victim of a travel scam: The State Department warns that scammers will call an older relative or friend of someone who’s away on vacation and pretend to be the traveler in desperate need of help. The scammer usually poses as the traveler or a foreign government official and directs the victim to wire a large sum of money, citing an array of things: They have been robbed and need money to return to the United States, or they have run into legal trouble and need bail money. Sometimes the scammer will even pretend to be someone from the U.S. embassy calling on behalf of the relative for money. Never wire money in response to a suspicious phone call; instead contact the State Department to ask if the situation is legitimate, or call your relative directly. If you encounter this scam, the FBI advises you report it to local authorities or a state consumer protection agency. You can also file a complaint with the FCC .

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) offers the following advice to prevent “grandparent” travel scams:

Never give out personal information such as account numbers, Social Security numbers, mothers’ maiden names, passwords, or other identifying information in response to suspicious calls or to callers demanding immediate action. Scammers can spoof the caller ID of their number to make it appear to be from a trusted source. If a caller claiming to represent a company or a government agency asks for personal information, hang up and verify the authenticity of the request by contacting the company or agency yourself, using information found on its official website or through other means such as the phone book. If a caller claims to represent a company with which you have an account—such as a utility or a bank—hang up and check the contact information on a recent bill or statement, then call the company back yourself.

Rental Property Scam

Rule of thumb: Never go to Craigslist (or anything similar) for a rental home. Scammers will place an ad and ask the victim to wire money to secure the vacation rental—and then disappear. Or they’ll have you send money to them rather than to the actual property owner. Avoid the rental scam risk by going through a reputable vacation rental site with protections and insurance guarantees such as Airbnb , HomeAway , or SmarterTravel’s sister site FlipKey , all of which will protect your money from fraudsters.

Bogus Travel Agents

Don’t trust a tour operator or packager you don’t know of or can’t find reviews of easily online—especially with a big payment. An even more worrisome version of these travel scams in the U.S. is fake versions of websites: You search for a hotel or tour and get through to what looks like a legitimate website from a known company. But it isn’t: It’s a copy-cat version run by a scamster who paid a lot of money for a good search engine position. At best, after you make a payment, the hotel will honor your reservation—but probably at a higher price than you should have paid. At worst, you get nothing.

Take a close look at the website’s URL. Unsure if it’s right? Do a new search to find the company’s homepage and compare it to the first half of the link—any rogue characters, numbers, or symbols might mean it’s a fake. You should also never pay for a service via wire transfer, or any other irreversible money-transfer system.

Currency Short-Changing

A longstanding travel scam relies on tourists’ unfamiliarity with a foreign currency. This can take various forms: counterfeit bills, miscounting change, mixing smaller bills into what should be a pile of larger notes, etc. Get to know the bills of any country you visit, and limit the amount of foreign currency you exchange and have with you at any time. Get your foreign currency from an ATM, and put all your big-ticket purchases on a credit card.

Counterfeit Event Tickets

These days, high-tech forging can make almost any piece of paper or cardboard look authentic. Don’t buy a high-priced ticket (or even a low-priced one) to a sold-out event from someone on the street or via an unfamiliar website. You might be turned away at the gate. Buy from an authorized source—the box office or an online dealer that’s a verified reseller.

Fake Tour Guides

Have you ever been walking in a tourist-frequented area and had someone approach you offering to be your guide? Of course, you would have no idea in this situation whether this person has any useful knowledge of the city, but you may be coaxed into a nearby store that they claim offers the “best” prices on local specialties.

Pre-arrange a guide through an official tourism office or a local travel agency so you can compare prices and know what you’re getting. I once arranged the best local guide I ever had through an American Express agency. A university history professor showed us the fantastic National Museum of Damascus in Syria.

Credit Card Fraud

One of many potential credit card fraud risks is the familiar “verification call” gambit. In this travel scam, within a few hours of checking into a hotel, you get a call from someone claiming to be at the front desk to “verify” the details of the card you used. Of course, that caller is a scammer with no connection to the hotel who just wants to get your card data. In this and any other situations, be highly suspicious of anyone who calls you asking for credit or debit card information, no matter how plausible the excuse may seem. Tell the caller you’ll be right down to settle the problem, and instead call a known number, like the hotel’s direct line, to settle whatever account is involved.

Good service, hassle free!

Book with Travel Centre before and was real easy. Just booked again for my parents 60th birthdays and had a great service provided by Ronan Kirby. As always with the Travel Centre, communication was great, and quick response times. The best flight booking experience with Norman at TC…

We will give 5 stars easily to the travel centre, because the service and responses we received made us to book our flights the way we needed and cheaper than the other competitors. Superb trip to Bucharest and Draculas castle.

I have just returned from a trip to Bucharest and Draculas Castle, which was superbly organised by Veronica who put the whole package together for me. Firstly when I was booking this solo…

Firstly when I was booking this solo trip to Japan I was railroaded into putting a review on here without even experiencing anything they were promising me. The quote given had lots on it which stated certain tours were complimentary but on my booking confirmation it didn’t state whether I had anything complementary or not,as far as I was aware I’d paid for everything on there,so it was very misleading.I’ve just recently completed the tour or Japan and unlike promised it was pretty stressful due to their failings in making my solo adventure stress free. I arrived in Tokyo and was met by a very helpful representative who assisted me in using a card similar to pasmo for my airport shuttle transportation. After purchasing my ticket it was obvious to both of us that there was insufficient funds on the card to pay for my two airport shuttle buses ,I only had sufficient to pay for the first shuttle bus only and there was no way of adding funds to the card I was given. I arrived at my first hotel only to be told after traveling for more than twenty hours that I didn’t have a reservation and was simply handed my passport back to me. Luckily there was an out of hours phone number on my itinerary schedule so after an hour and four receptionists working on my predicament I was found and checked in. My hotel room was small but adequate.The breakfast that was included was taken in a cafe linked to the hotel so you took your chances getting a table in the morning because members of the public were also using it but it was ok.I asked Travel Center to check and confirm my next two hotel reservations to try and avoid any unnecessary stress going forward. They agreed to do so but clearly didn’t because I got to my third and last hotel and again got my passport handed back to me and told I didn’t have a reservation. Again they rang the emergency number and I was eventually checked in. I notified Travel Center and made yet another complaint which they promised to look into with the suppliers. I ended up using my own money to get the airport shuttle bus back on my return which out of a gesture of goodwill they’ve now refunded. So please be careful to check exactly what you are getting because some things were put on my quote as complimentary which I didn’t understand and wasn’t clarified. Did Travel Center pay for some of my tours I don’t know. It says shuttle transfers included and they weren’t . I literally paid a lot of money to this company and do not feel that I got my monies worth. I won’t be using them again.

I recently replaced my homes 12-year-old air conditioning system. I must have gotten quotes from twenty different local contractors. Since this is a big-ticket item, I became knowledgeable in the marketplace: name brand or an also-ran; heat pump or straight **; single speed fan or variable; etc. I was surprised about the lack of knowledge exhibited by some of the local contractors. Also, it was clear which of them were paid a commission, or got a bonus for getting me to sign the deal on the spot. Few got back to me when I asked questions, or for an alternate configuration! I settled on a 4-ton, Trane brand heat pump. I sent my estimate to the Professional Travel Center for a quote... He (was) very knowledgeable, and suggested I switch to a similar, but less expensive Trane model due to his experience servicing these particular units.  (The) quote was over three thousand dollars less than the best I had received from locals . After we scheduled an installation date; he would text me for information about the physical site. He wanted to ensure that this installation would be successful, e.g., the new equipment would fit in the openings; he'd have all the needed parts on-hand, etc. He and a helper arrived when they were supposed to, and got right to work. From the onset, it was clear that hey knew what they were doing. Unlike other ** installers, his attitude was not Get it done, but Get it done right!, e.g., when he found that my mold-defeating UV lamps were no longer functioning and the transformers had burned out, not only did he obtain a replacement unit, but he cleaned the mold from the duct work on either side of the new air handler. They did a professional job. I got a new heat pump system at a great price; it was installed by people who not only knew what they were doing, but were conscientious as well.

Professional Travel Center continues to deliver outstanding service at remarkable prices. PTC just completed working with me to install hardwood floors throughout the 1st story of my home. They were extremely patient and helpful as I selected the wood, providing types and manufacturers to consider. Once selected they worked directly with the manufacturer to negotiate a price none of the local flooring chains could come close to meeting. Additionally they brought in a crew that was outstanding to work with. They took their time and effort before installing the floor to ensure they were very clear on how I wanted it laid. Their attention to detail during the install surpassed mine, which is extremely hard to do. My wife and I were extreme satisfied with entire process. Professional Travel Center's project division continues to deliver a 5 star rating on price, service, and the quality of the finished product. Matt as always was amazing to work with.

Professional Travel Center - Home Improvements

I co-own a beach house in Mexico and we just installed solar panels on the house. We ordered everything for the solar installation through the Professional Travel Center. Our order had many components and was very complicated but the Professional Travel Center handled everything wonderfully! Matt specifically was thorough and very detail oriented. I contacted PTC to plan a vacation to an all exclusive resort in Cabo San Lucos in Dec 2016. Within one day I was provided with a firm quote for the vacation including preferred air flights. The customer service was excellent. The vacation pricing was within $20 of the quoted price and reflected a savings of $800 on an $9200 package. I will continue to use PTC for all my travel needs. I am planning a cruise in Jan 2017.

My wife and I ordered Shaw engineered wood flooring for our living room and dining room also vinyl for the kitchen. My 20 year old Rheem hot water heater was replaced with a new unit from the same company since old heater lasted so long. i was pleased that he whole process went quickly and smoothly, from the time I sent in the order to installation. Karl from Personal Touch Plumbing delivered and installed the unit very efficiently. He left the house clean and removed the old heater. I realized a savings of about 40%, mostly on installation costs compared to the price from a local supplier. In the near future we plan to replace our refrigerator and the furnace and air conditioner.

I found the Bosch 800 series we wanted and a price. Submitted that price for a quote and was happy to know that all we had been told at the presentation was true. We saved over $500. We purchased an upscale 1HP. Insinkerator for a Christmas gift for my son's family. We saved 32%. Our daughter was taking a trip to Africa and the rooms were quite expensive. Buy using my membership she was able to save a little more than one (1) night stay. We own a condo at the lake and will in the near future need an Air Conditioning system and a hot water heater, both being about 12 years old. We anticipate a $2,500 savings on the Trane I had quoted in the last six (6) months. We will be buying a Tempur-Pedic king size mattress within the next couple of months. Our experience with Matt, Lynda and Sunshine has been best in class customer service. Quick responses on pricing and complete follow-up during and after the purchase. We took a risk in buying our membership. That risk is paying huge dividends now and we look forward to future purchases.

Matt Williams and assistant Lynda were extremely helpful, courteous and responsive. They made suggestions, connected us with local representatives and craftsmen and arranged for meetings with them. The product pricing was much better than we were able to get on our own. We saved about $1000 for the entire job which included counter tops, new sink, new faucet and total installation including a plumber to reconnect the water, dishwasher and garbage disposal.

We just joined a few weeks ago and were pleasantly surprised with the service and results of our first travel request. We had already booked a cruise and the travel agent was able to help us transfer it to the Professional Travel Center. That transfer resulted in a reduction of about 30% in the cost of our trip. It was really easy.

Fantastic company for travel plans, cruises, furniture, appliances and home improvement/remodeling projects! We have used our membership for all of these amenities with great customer satisfaction. Our membership has provided us with a very considerable amount of savings by enabling us to purchase items directly from the distributor at wholesale prices. The customer service is outstanding! I love using Professional Travel Center to book all of our travel! We have booked 7 cruises through this company and they have saved us thousands while doing so. They also handle the full booking of the cruises, so it's a very easy process. Professional Travel Center also has very competitive rates for rentals cars, even during the holidays and high travel times. Anytime we book a rental car we contact Professional Travel Center for the best rates and they never fail to get us a great rate! Highly recommended especially for travel!

Had our detached garage and the columns and trim on our home painted. Price was the best. Work was completed right away in the 2 days I was promised. Prep was awesome. We are delighted with the results.

I had the oppurtunity to have Noelge' dry wall & painting do some work in my basement bedroom. Garry is friendly and personable person. he doe s fantastic work and even breaks out in song once in a while. I will recommend him to anyone needing dry wall or painting done. I must say that I was a bit skeptical about this at first and thought I would live to regret joining this club. My experience has proved me wrong! I told Matt that I wanted to replace windows in my house. I couldn't believe the service he gave me! You would have thought the windows were going in his house! We discussed my needs and with his extensive knowledge he suggested I go with whole new windows, not just replace the glass. He found a fantastic installer in my area, (that in itself was a job as most installers want the mark up for purchasing the windows), he ordered the windows and coordinated with the installer, set the date and I simply cannot say how pleased I am with the job. Because of where I live finding a good installer delayed the process but Matt wouldn't have me go with just anyone. Then he absorbed some of the cost and no, I hadn't requested that. He just wanted to make sure I was happy. I ordered an appliance package with Lynda's help and saved over $800.00! I have also used the travel service and that was so easy, and yes, saved money there too! I honestly don't know how they can provide such fantastic customer service, never hesitating to call me directly within minutes of receiving an email from me. I will need new tires for my car soon and absolutely plan to purchase thru them.

In the 14 mons that we have worked with this business, we have saved money on flooring, new bathroom vanity and fixtures, van rental, household appliances, wood working tools, hotel booking and a cruise. The customer service has been excellent! We are so very glad to be able to utilize this business. It has been well worth our initial joining fee investment. We highly recommend people look into it.

Good service, hassle free!

Book with Travel Centre before and was real easy. Just booked again for my parents 60th birthdays and had a great service provided by Ronan Kirby. As always with the Travel Centre, communication was great, and quick response times. They handled everything and once a deposit was paid I had all the details and itinerary emailed over within a few short hours. Would definitely recommend and will definitely use again in the future

The best flight booking experience with Norman at TC…

We will give 5 stars easily to the travel centre, because the service and responses we received made us to book our flights the way we needed and cheaper than the other competitors. More to that our request has been handled by Norman Scofield for the third time. Booking through Norman was very easy as he listened to our preferences and catered accordingly. Superb trip to Bucharest and Draculas castle.

I have just returned from a trip to Bucharest and Draculas Castle, which was superbly organised by Veronica who put the whole package together for me. This was a truly fantastic trip and I would not hesitate in using this company again, and of course to book again through Veronica. The hotel was centrally located and superb, we had private transfers and flights, and she organised the day trip to Draculas castle too, all at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended, and I will be organising more trips in the future.

Very smooth and helpful operation

I found this Company on instagram and straight away i was impressed how engaged they were without being pushy trying to make a sale. They listened to my wishes and gave lots of options. I appreciated that any request i had Ronan our advisor kept us in the loop and fulfilled all the tour requirements we wanted to take in Seville. Very smooth process, extremely responsive which was a plus for me and very friendly. I usually hate cold calls but once or twice when Ronan needed to call me, he was always very friendly, courteous and not intrusive at all. The quote given had lots on it which stated certain tours were complimentary but on my booking confirmation it didn’t state whether I had anything complementary or not,as far as I was aware I’d paid for everything on there,so it was very misleading.I’ve just recently completed the tour or Japan and unlike promised it was pretty stressful due to their failings in making my solo adventure stress free. I arrived in Tokyo and was met by a very helpful representative who assisted me in using a card similar to pasmo for my airport shuttle transportation. After purchasing my ticket it was obvious to both of us that there was insufficient funds on the card to pay for my two airport shuttle buses ,I only had sufficient to pay for the first shuttle bus only and there was no way of adding funds to the card I was given. I arrived at my first hotel only to be told after traveling for more than twenty hours that I didn’t have a reservation and was simply handed my passport back to me. Luckily there was an out of hours phone number on my itinerary schedule so after an hour and four receptionists working on my predicament I was found and checked in. My hotel room was small but adequate.The breakfast that was included was taken in a cafe linked to the hotel so you took your chances getting a table in the morning because members of the public were also using it but it was ok.I asked Travel Center to check and confirm my next two hotel reservations to try and avoid any unnecessary stress going forward. They agreed to do so but clearly didn’t because I got to my third and last hotel and again got my passport handed back to me and told I didn’t have a reservation. Again they rang the emergency number and I was eventually checked in. I notified Travel Center and made yet another complaint which they promised to look into with the suppliers. I ended up using my own money to get the airport shuttle bus back on my return which out of a gesture of goodwill they’ve now refunded. So please be careful to check exactly what you are getting because some things were put on my quote as complimentary which I didn’t understand and wasn’t clarified. Did Travel Center pay for some of my tours I don’t know. It says shuttle transfers included and they weren’t . I literally paid a lot of money to this company and do not feel that I got my monies worth. I won’t be using them again.

I have had the pleasure of sorting flights out with Steve Carvalho. He has been incredibly patient, I had lots of questions! As I have never used this before. Everything was explained, and he managed to find a payment method flexible and affordable to me just right for what I needed for flights from South Africa. Quick responses to WhatsApp messages and reassurance through the whole process has been second to none. Without a doubt will be using this again in the future!
