Three of the most adrenaline-fuelled moments from the Travel Guides' trip to New Zealand

Just a three hour flight from Australia's east cost is our friendly neighbour New Zealand.

And while the Travel Guides are no stranger to the country's South Island they headed on an adventure to the less-explored North Island.

"Holiday snobs" Kevin and Janetta , the Frens , siblings Stack and Josh , best mates Kev, Dorian and Teng and Matt and Brett took on a scenic driving tour with a detour for adventure.

Stream new episodes of Travel Guides on 9Now.

And as the home to the adrenaline capital of the world, New Zealand certainly delivered thrills at every stop.

From throwing themselves off sky high buildings to rafting the world's tallest waterfall, we take a look at the most electrifying activities the Guides took on in New Zealand.

Matt overcomes his fear of heights

Auckland's Sky Tower stands at a toe-tingling 330 metres tall.

And despite having been to Auckland at least seven times before Matt and Brett had done their best to avoid the dizzying heights... until now.

It was time for the couple to take on the SkyWalk.

"This is the stuff of nightmares. This is like my number one top fear ever," Matt told cameras.

Not wanting to back down, Matt teetered along the one-metre wide ledge 53 floors above the ground.

"I've never been more terrified in my life," Matt was brought to tears.

"It escalated for me really quickly, but now I'm out here I don't want to retreat. I have to push myself to see how far I can go."

EXCLUSIVE: The first look inside Victoria from Travel Guides wedding

He wobbled out onto the edge but achieved his goal making husband Brett "very proud".

Matt wasn't the only one freaked out by the height, with Kevin and Janetta "not even making it out the door"

The Guides take the plunge over the world's highest waterfall

A gentle stream down Kaituna River sounds like the perfect way to spend an afternoon in nature.

But that's not what Rotorua Rafting had in store for our Guides.

They were about to take on the world's highest commercially rafted waterfall and while Victoria thought it was "awesome" not everyone was as thrilled about it.

"We're gonna die," Kev blurted out.

As a non-swimmer, he admitted that water was his "biggest phobia".

"I'm terrified of the ocean, I'm terrified of currents. I am not excited to do this, I'm terrified," Kev told cameras.

And while his mates Dorian and Teng were delighted at every drop, Kev "knew it was only going to get worse".

The rafting wrapped up with a plunge over the world's highest commercially rafted waterfall – the seven-metre Tutea Falls.

Kev's nerves were not eased when the instructor told him that he once spent 40 seconds under water following the drop.

The moment the raft dropped over the waterfall, Kev, Dorian and Teng came flying out and surfaced in the wash.

EXCLUSIVE: The Guides share their 'genius' packing tips

"That was the most scared I've ever been, that was insane," Kev later told cameras.

"I think near-death brought us closer together."

"To see your mates in that much fear, it's the rawest you can get," Teng added.

The travellers have a ball Zorbing

To wrap up their New Zealand road trip, the travellers made sure to (literally) have a ball with one last adventure activity – Zorbing.

The Guides hopped into a giant ball where they would then be pushed down a hill.

EXCLUSIVE: The Guides reveal the weirdest foods they've ever eaten overseas

"Zorbing was invented in 1994, in Rotorua New Zealand," narrator Denise Scott revealed.

And the Target Boys wanted to make sure to go out with a bang and rolled down the highest and fasted track on the course.

Siblings Victoria and Jono also got in on the action although it's safe to say the journey downhill wasn't without it's obstacles.

Travel Guides 2023

"I think Victoria's got her head in Jonathon's crotch," mum Cathy laughed.

And upon exiting the Zorb ball Victoria said: "That is like a washing machine on turbo cycle."

Firm that built superyacht Bayesian say ‘human error’ is to blame

The firm that built tech billionaire Mike Lynch’s superyacht, which sank off the coast of Italy, has dropped a bombshell.

The firm that built tech billionaire Mike Lynch’s superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Sicily say “human error” is to blame.

On Thursday, the head of Italian Sea Group, Giovanni Cotantino, said the tragedy could have been avoided after the $58 million ship capsized in a water spout on Monday morning.

“Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors,” Mr Costantino said.

The company, which includes the Perini Navi company, built the luxury 56-metre yacht in 2008.

Mr Costantino told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed.

Italian Sea Group, Giovanni Cotantino said ‘human error’ is to blame for the tragedy.

Security camera footage of the ship from the shore showed the lights on its mast going out, which Mr Costantino said indicated a short circuit, meaning that the ship had already taken on water, AFP reported.

“A Perini ship resisted Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 (hurricane). Does it seem to you that it can’t resist a tornado from here?” he told the publication.

Mr Costantino said it was “good practice when the ship is at anchor to have a guard on the bridge, and if there was one he could not have failed to see the storm coming”.

“Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice in a trap,” he said.

A photo shows the Bayesian in Palermo, Italy, before it sank. Picture: Perini Navi Press Office

He also told The Sun modern sailing ships, especially high-tech ones like the Perini, are designed to be extremely safe and stable.

“Even in very critical conditions, if procedures are followed, a sailing yacht like the Bayesian will return to an upright position,” he said.

“However, if the ship takes on water, this stability is compromised.

Body of billionaire Mike Lynch retrieved from sunken yacht

“Where the water entered will be determined by the investigators.

“What is certain is that the ship took on hundreds of thousands of litres of water.”

He also disputed widely reported claims that the ship sank in just 60 seconds - instead saying logs show it took 16 minutes to go down.

Disturbing CCTV captured the moment the superyacht was swallowed by a tornado-like waterspout.

“The torture lasted 16 minutes. It went down, not in one minute as some scientists have said,” he told The Financial Times .

“It went down in 16 minutes. You can see it from the charts, from the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking chart.

“The captain should have prepared the boat and put it in a state of alert and of safety, just like the boat [the Sir Robert Baden Powell] anchored 350 metres away, which was built in 1957 and handled the [weather] event brilliantly.”

He claimed the Bayesian was “one of the safest boats in the world” and was virtually “unsinkable”, telling Italian publication Corriere della Sera : “The passengers reported something absurd, that the storm came unexpectedly, suddenly. That is not true. Everything was predictable.”

Divers have recovered five of the six missing passengers including British tech billionaire Mike Lynch. Picture: Vigili del Fuoco / AFP

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, close to Porticello, where the vessel went down, have opened an investigation into the disaster. They will seek to establish what caused the yacht to sink and whether any of the crew are criminally liable.

The body of billionaire tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch is among the five bodies divers recovered on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old was said to be trapped by two mattresses inside a cabin on the superyacht, according to Italian publication La Repubblica.

Italian officials said on Wednesday that they believed his 18-year-old daughter Hannah to be among those recovered, but she is now thought to still be inside the boat.

Fifteen people have been rescued, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, a mother with her one-year-old baby , and New Zealand captain James Cutfield who is recovering in hospital.

Mr Lynch and his wife Angela Bacare (together, above) who survived the tragedy.

Captain questioned

Prosecutors, who have been interviewing survivors from the tragedy, questioned Mr Cutfield for several hours about the disaster, Giornale Di Sicilia reported.

The 51-year-old, who managed to escape from the vessel, told Italian media, “We just didn’t see it coming” , when speaking of the abrupt nature of the water spout.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Mr Cutfield.

Mr Cutfield’s brother Mark told the NZ Herald his brother was a “very good sailor” and was “very well respected”.

He said he is currently in hospital but was not suffering from injuries “too dramatic”.

“He’s safe, he’s okay,” Mark said.

Mr Cutfield’s wife had flown from their home in Palma, Mallorca, to be by his side in Italy and has been updating his family back home in New Zealand.

According to the NZ Herald , he had been a captain on luxury yachts for eight years and had previously been working on them and involved in building them for the past 30 years in various locations around the Mediterranean.

The publication reported that before Mr Cutfield worked for the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, he had worked for a Turkish billionaire.

Mr Cutfield’s interrogation comes after divers found that the keel, a crucial part of the boat’s structure which helps keep it balanced, had been raised when the yacht was anchored off shore.

New Zealand captain James Cutfield, who survived the tragedy, was questioned for several hours by authorities as an investigation into what happened has been launched.

The keel operates as the main structural backbone of the yacht, filled with heavy materials, keeping it balanced and helping it to correct in stormy waters.

Dan Green, Research & Investigations lead at eSysman SuperYachts, told The Mirror that if the keel was raised it would harm the boat’s stability and could explain why it sank so quickly.

“The keel when lowered increases the stability of the vessel,” he said.

“When raised, this reduces stability as the centre of gravity is raised, as the keel is also weighted with lead.

“Another effect of the keel being in the up position is the vessel will not self-right if it leans far over.

“If you add to that the possibility of hatches being opened on the vessel that would explain why it’s saying [sinking] so quickly.”

The UK’s marine accident investigation branch also sent four inspectors.

Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told AFP what happened was “pretty unprecedented” after the yacht was struck by a “black swan” waterspout during a storm.

UK meteorologist Peter Inness described a waterspout as a “narrow column of rotating air below a thunderstorm that occurs over water”.

More Coverage

Like tornadoes, they suck up air in a rotating motion. Many are fairly inconsequential, but some can pack winds of more than 100km per hour, Mr Inness said.

Jean-Marie Dumon, a former naval officer now with the GICAN, the French maritime industry association, added that conditions with winds of 100kph or more can “create completely anarchic sea conditions which can cause capsizing”.

- with AFP, The Sun

Tributes have flooded in for Hannah Lynch after divers found a sixth body following the tragic sinking of the Bayesian superyacht on Monday.

A plane carrying tourists has crashed shortly after taking off from Bangkok. All nine on board are believed to have died.

A Jetstar passenger has described the moment a fellow passenger opened the emergency exit where he was seated and climbed out.

Taylor Swift explains why she waited to speak about foiled terror plot on canceled Austria shows

Taylor Swift performs at Wembley Stadium as part of her Eras Tour.

Taylor Swift said she's grateful to be grieving "concerts and not lives," in her first remarks since an alleged planned terror attack on her Austrian concert dates led to the shows being canceled .

In a post on Instagram Wednesday, the singer said goodbye to the European leg of her Eras Tour, which wrapped the day before in London, but said that walking onto the city's Wembley Stadium stage following what was supposed to be three nights in Vienna the week prior "was a rollercoaster of emotions."

"Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows. But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives," Swift wrote.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

Swift's Vienna shows — which were scheduled for Aug. 8, 9 and 10 — were canceled after two teens were arrested in connection with a foiled plot to attack the events. A third teen was arrested days later, though police said he had no direct connection in planning the attack.

Authorities say all three suspects, ranging in age from 17 to 19, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group. The 17-year-old had secured employment at the Vienna venue, and bomb-making materials were found in the 19-year-old's home, who also confessed to planning to "kill as many people as possible outside the concert venue."

Though the concerts were initially set to move forward with enhanced security, they were ultimately canceled when Vienna police said an "abstract danger” still existed even as the concrete danger was minimized. Still, devastated fans gathered in the city to trade friendship bracelets and sing Swift's music amid the canceled shows.

"I was heartened by the love and unity I saw in the fans who banded together. I decided that all of my energy had to go toward helping to protect the nearly half a million people I had coming to see the shows in London," Swift said in her Instagram post, noting she and her team worked "hand in hand" with Wembley Stadium staff to ensure she could fulfill that goal.

After thanking those who assisted in the safety measures, Swift explained why she waited until the London shows were over to speak on the canceled shows.

"Let me be very clear: I am not going to speak about something publicly if I think doing so might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows," she wrote. "In cases like this one, 'silence' is actually showing restraint, and waiting to express yourself at a time when it's right to. My priority was finishing our European tour safely, and it is with great relief that I can say we did that."

Swift concluded her post by commemorating the five nights at Wembley, which followed three in June that made her the first solo artist to play the venue eight times in one tour. She will next head back to North America in November with shows in five cities to conclude the Eras Tour.

"To the fans who have seen us this summer, you'll always have the most sparkling place in my memories. You were a dream to perform for, dance with and share those magical moments with," Swift wrote. "We'll see you all again when we resume The Eras Tour in October, but for now we get to take a much needed rest. Thank you for the adventure of a lifetime. May it continue…"
