Overview of Backland Glamping near the Grand Canyon

Nestled in Arizona’s scenic landscape in Williams, Arizona and only an hour and a half from Grand Canyon National Park, Backland is a luxury eco resort featuring 10 spacious glamping tents that blend comfort with environmental stewardship. Emphasizing the power of meaningful outdoor encounters, Backland invites guests to unplug, breathe in fresh air, and stargaze while enjoying comfortable, sustainable lodging.

travel backland az

Backland, true to its name, is located in a remote area of the Kaibab National Forest about a half hour drive southeast of downtown Williams, Arizona.

The last 8 miles of the drive to Backland is on maintained dirt forest service roads. Any vehicle should be able to make the drive without issue in normal conditions, but do pay attention to road conditions and call the resort if you have any concerns during the drive.

travel backland az

Backland recommends downloading a third-party app with audio-guided instructions to get to the resort, but if, like us, you prefer to minimize your cell phone apps, you can easily navigate your way to Backland via the Google Map directions linked on their website’s Location page. The main thing to pay attention to is that you should NOT turn right onto Forest Service Rd 18 off of Garland Prairie Road, even if Google prompts you to. This will lead you to a locked gate. Instead, follow the directions as shown in the map below and turn onto Forest Service Rd 18 from Rosalida Springs Rd.

Glamping Tent Options at Backland

Backland offers 4 different suite options in their glamping tents.

  • Backland Suite: Sleeps up to 4 with a king bed and queen sofa bed
  • Sky Suite: Same as a Backland Suite, plus a 16-foot skylight over the bed for stargazing
  • Grand Suite: Sleeps up to 6 with a king bed, queen sofa bed, twin bed, and rollaway bed
  • Grand Sky Suite: Same as Grand Suite, plus a 16-foot skylight over the king bed for stargazing.

Sky Suite Review

We stayed in a Sky Suite (Tent #5 to be exact). The glamping tent features a comfortable king-sized bed beneath a 16-foot long skylight. This was our favorite feature of our tent. Tim and I both caught a few shooting stars from the comfort of bed during our stay! Plus, as someone who tends to have night sweats, I appreciated the breathable bedding. Rarely do I find a hotel bed with comforters and sheets that prevent me from sweating overnight, so this was a big plus in my book.

travel backland az

The tent also features a Kuerig coffee and tea area (with pods, mugs and creamers provided), a microwave, pull-out sofa, living room table, desk and chair, and bedside end tables.

travel backland az

The bathroom has a sink, shower, toilet, and closet for resetting the electric hot water. One thing to note is that we did have issues with the hot water heater during our stay, which took over an hour to resolve with the help of Backland staff. Part of the adventure of glamping is being prepared to be flexible. While Backland is a luxury glamping stay, it is nevertheless glamping .

The bathroom is equipped with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, but you might want to bring your own conditioner, if, like me, you are prone to tangles. Towels and washcloths (including darker ones for makeup, dirt, etc.) are also provided.

travel backland az

The tent is climate-controlled, with remote-operated heating and cooling units. We had no issues with the heat during our November stay!

The far end of the tent features floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors that open out to a lovely patio overlooking the forest. Our patio had two chairs and a sun lounger. This was a perfect spot to enjoy the sunrise! Oh, and don’t worry about unwanted light coming in in the mornings. There are separate privacy and blackout curtains on the windows/doors so you can let in as much or as little light as you’d like!

Amenities and Activities

  • Stargazing: In addition to skylights in the Sky Suites, Backland also offers complimentary telescopes available at reception to enhance your stargazing experience.
  • Spa: You can request a massage from the spa during your visit.
  • Pond and beach: An excellent spot to watch the sunrise, the pond and beach outside of reception have ample spots to lounge, yard games, fishing poles, and kayaks.
  • Fire pit and s’mores: In the evenings, there are complimentary s’mores by the fire pit outside of reception.
  • WiFi: WiFi is free and available in reception only.

Restaurant and Meals

The onsite restaurant at Backland features seasonal and local ingrediants. The complimentary breakfast features fresh fruit, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cereal, granola, and a build-your-own crepe station. Juices, coffee, and water are also available.

Backland’s restaurant also offers a decadent cooked-to-order dinner (additional cost), and boxed lunches to fuel your adventures to nearby destinations like the Grand Canyon or Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon.

Final Thoughts on Grand Canyon Glamping at Backland

For a tranquil natural environment near popular day-trip destinations in Arizona like the Grand Canyon, Page, and Flagstaff, Backland is a unique glamping option that invites guests to embrace the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort.

While rejuvenating the skin, body, and soul, guests get to relax and enjoy the bountiful forests of northern Arizona. Yoga classes near the beach are also offered. The Luxurious Glamping Experience Near The Grand Canyon And Sedona

travel backland az

With great anticipation, we drove along the gravel forest service road into the wilderness to Backland’s eco-luxury resort for our glamping experience. I waited for months to unplug and disconnect at this eco-resort.

Five years ago, I began solo camping. No tent for me, though. I slept in my SUV and purchased comfortable gear for such adventures. I loved visiting Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California to observe and photograph the night sky.

Last year, I upgraded my car camping to glamping in a covered wagon , which was a step up from car camping. Camping fulfills my midlife crisis but glamping is so much better!

Backland offers the best glamping in Arizona if you’ve been thinking about glamping at eco-resorts. They’ve thought of everything to make your stay comfortable, relaxing, and enjoyable.

Backland hosted me on this visit. However, all opinions are my own.

Where Is Backland Glamping Resort

On a hidden ranch about 20 miles southeast of Williams, Arizona, Backland resides on 160 acres of private land. Surrounded by the Kaibab National Forest and the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world, this luxurious glamping experience is ideally situated for quiet, connecting with nature, and reconnecting with loved ones. Yet, it is close to exciting destinations like the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Flagstaff for daytime entertainment.

Breakfast in Backland, Williams, Arizona

Let’s talk about tent construction. Built to stay taut and not flap in the wind, the tents are fully insulated with high-efficiency heating, air conditioning, and automatic climate control.

Parking right by your tent is a plus. Transporting luggage to your tent is easy.

There are enough electrical outlets to keep all your devices charged, even though we were expecting to disconnect.

Ensuite Bathroom

The ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower and water conservation fixtures rivals upscale hotel rooms in any big city. Add the bounty of thick white towels, and it’s pretty luxurious. Quality ecological toiletries are provided.

I enjoyed cozying up in a fluffy white robe. Need I say more?

King-Size Bed

The king-size bed with luxury linens speaks volumes for this eco-resort. We were in a skyview tent with a glass skylight over the bed. The full moon lit our room in its travel across the night sky.

The 16-foot-wide panoramic sliding glass doors on the front wall of the tent gave us an unobstructed view of the meadows, pine forest, and lake. We felt immersed in nature.

With more than 75 feet between tents and sound-dampening insulation, we didn’t hear our neighbors.

Farm-To-Table Dining

Enjoy gourmet meals inside or outside on the patio in the reception building.

Dining at Backland was such a pleasurable experience. The farm-to-table cuisine delivered to our table by knowledgeable waitstaff was memorable. The produce was fresh and the menu was creative. The breakfast and dinners, made to order, were delicious.

While you might think plastics and disposables are camping requirements, Backland uses compostable plates, utensils, and glassware. Backland doesn’t use dishwashers and saves many gallons of water every day.

In the afternoon, we received a text asking when we would like to reserve our place for dinner. It was personal and attentive.

Spa And Yoga

The spa tent has two massage tables where you can schedule massages for two or other spa services where herbs and botanicals come from the Backland property.

Reserving a massage and participating in a complimentary yoga session by the pond takes average glamping to a much higher level.

Keeping with eco-luxury, lighting on the paths to the reception building and tents comply with dark sky conditions. Arizona has the most Dark Sky Communities in the nation.

If you drive an electric vehicle, you will be happy to know that Backland provides an electrical vehicle charging station by the reception building.

Backland Resort in Williams, Arizona

Things To Do

You can do any or all of these when you are on a glamping vacation at Backland. I particularly enjoyed kayaking. It was a milestone in my adventure career.

Watch The Sunrise From Bed

If you’ve closed the shades, roll them up so you can see the splendor of the morning light or step out onto the patio while enjoying the first cup of coffee for the day.

Kayak On The Lake

Hop on a paddleboard or use one of the brightly colored kayaks pulled up onto the sandy beach for a paddle around the lake. You might see snakes sunning themselves on the rocks.

With over two miles of trails on Backland property, paved with wood chips, take a refreshing walk or run. Visit the original homestead, which may be placed into service in the coming years.

Outside Activities

Complimentary use of sports equipment, books, games, and even sleds for winter snow fun, can be checked out at the reception building. They’ve thought of everything!

What I enjoyed most was watching the kids play indoor board games with their parents and siblings in the dining room. I also enjoyed when they were outside building sandcastles on the beach.

I asked Clare, the tiny 4-year-old guest digging in the beach sand under her mother’s watchful eye, what her favorite activity was. She said, “making sandcastles.” Clare’s 11-year-old sister, Emily, said she liked kayaking best and all the board games inside.

I have to admit, my favorite activity was kayaking, too. The lake was so calm and the kayak so sturdy, that I overcame my fear of the sport and was reluctant to return to shore and hand over the paddle.

Wil Lewis, another young guest, said his favorite activity was s’mores after dark. He was so happy because he could make s’mores two nights in a row.

You can play outdoor games like tetherball, volleyball, and corn hole that are right outside the reception and the dining room. I must warn you this is not just child’s play.

Try your hand at fishing with complimentary fishing poles. While the lake is currently not stocked, there’s something about casting a line in the water and watching the appealing float bob.

The staff organized scavenger hunts with geo-caching for the kids. While I didn’t see the hunt, I heard from the young guests how much fun it was.

All the activities are close to the reception building, making it easy to access after dark and keeping the space around the tents quiet. From roasting s’mores over the firepit to stargazing with the telescope, wrapping up with a star-spangled walk along the lit pathway to your luxury room is the perfect day’s end at Backland.

Stylish and cushy couches face the lake on the patio and provide a comfortable place for quiet conversations or reading in the sun. Two lounge chairs with a small table on the side of the patio also make a nice meeting place with a view for couples or solo travelers. While Backland is a great place for families with children, my husband and I enjoyed the luxury and location for just the two of us.

Connect With Nature

Connect with nature by bird watching with the complimentary use of binoculars and a bird guide.

Listen to coyotes in the distance as you watch the sunset over the lake or borrow a book from the library at reception. They have many to choose from.

Kayaking in Backland Resort in Williams, Arizona

Things To Do Off-Site

If you want to leave Backland for the day, here are some suggestions for things to do in Williams, the Grand Canyon, and Sedona.

Pro Tip: Consider visiting Sedona before your Backland experience because I promise you won’t want to leave once you get to Backland.

Grand Canyon Railway

You can have breakfast at Backland then head into Williams for the Grand Canyon Railway experience that includes almost three hours at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. You’ll be back in time for dinner at Backland.

Grand Canyon Deer Farm

The Grand Canyon Deer Farm is close to the Backland turnoff from Highway 40. The farm is the most fun hands-on animal experience I’ve ever had. You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy this.

Bearizona is the perfect place to view wildlife in natural environments. The walk-through experience allows you to stroll through winding walkways and get up close to jaguars, grizzly bears, and smaller animals. You must stay in your vehicle for the drive-through experience.

Elephant Rocks Golf Course

Have breakfast at Backland then take your golf clubs to Elephant Rocks Golf Course in Williams. This championship course is nestled amongst the ponderosa pines with giant lava rocks at the entrance resembling elephants.

Historic Route 66

A visit to Williams wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Route 66 Museum & Gift Shop . Many neon signs decorate the downtown with memorabilia exhibited throughout the town.

I ate at the Red Raven Restaurant midday and had a healthy wrap sandwich. Red Raven would be an ideal place to have lunch while you are in town.

Sedona is known for its art, shopping, and mystical influence.

Red Rock State Park

Learn about the scenic wonders and outstanding recreational opportunities in the park. See exhibits and environmental education services about the local geology, the human influence on Verde Valley, and seven biotic communities in the area.

Bell Rock Vista & Pathway

Bell Rock is a butte north of the village of Oak Creek. It’s a famous landmark with panoramic views. A hike up Bell Rock is fun, especially for kids.

Trolley Ride

An open-air trolley ride provides lively narration if you want something less strenuous than a hike up Bell Rock.

Pro Tip: Traffic can be heavy in Sedona and Oak Creek. Bring your patience in the afternoon.

Tent at Backlands Resort in Williams, Arizona

Things To Consider

Mosquitos were not a problem when I was at Backland in the fall. However, they have all-natural mosquito bye-bye wipes that are aromatic with 100 percent natural oils that are safe for the whole family.

Water

Water is shipped in for all consumption, so conservation is a priority at Backland. Because of their rigorous water-saving measures, they can utilize the existing septic system. I appreciated the awareness that it brought to my time there.

Backland provides a pitcher of water (with a cover) on request for your tent rather than bottled water.

Handicapped Accessible

Backland welcomes and accommodates people with disabilities. Tent #1 is expertly adapted for wheelchair use. Pavers in front of the tent for parking and the low front door jamb provide an accessible entrance and exit. In addition, the brick pavement wraps around the tent for patio accessibility.

The handicap-accessible tent has a roll-in shower and a roll-under bathroom sink. The towel rack design makes the towels easy to reach. Area rugs are eliminated and a height-adjusted twin bed is conveniently close to the bathroom and entry door.

Handicapped parking with pavers at the reception and dining room allows the whole Backland eco-resort experience for all guests.

Allow yourself to succumb to the Backland experience. If you only have a two-day weekend, don’t leave the property. Live and deeply experience all that Backland has to offer. It’s a simple encounter with immeasurable results.

Those looking to get out and explore will find walking trails crisscrossing the property, a pond with a beach, and a volleyball court. Backland has several native plant and pollinator gardens, including a milkweed garden for monarch butterflies, an apiary that produces honey used onsite, and native orchards.

Further afield, Backland guests can make the direct, one-hour drive to Grand Canyon National Park or visit one of the many nearby natural attractions, including Sycamore Falls, Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater Volcano, and Walnut Canyon National Monument.

To use your stay at Backland for good, book at least a 2-night stay before Dec. 31, 2023, and enter the promo code STAYFORGOOD at checkout. Planning a road trip? Stop at one of these 18 uniquely Arizona roadside attractions

travel backland az

While the nearest rest stop or fast-food chain restaurant may be the most convenient place for tired travelers searching for a reprieve from the open road, it would be remiss of road trippers to ignore the unusual roadside attractions scattered along the Arizona highways.

If life-sized cartoon characters near the Grand Canyon or exotic animals on the way to Tucson sound like better pit stops than the local gas station, you're in luck when driving in Arizona.

Here are some of the most notable Arizona roadside attractions you can check out the next time you cross the Grand Canyon state.

Bedrock City at Raptor Ranch

As if Fred Flintstone's prehistoric town had always been set in Arizona, visiting Bedrock City at Raptor Ranch will make baby boomers (and anyone else who watched reruns of the popular '60s cartoon) nostalgic for their childhood. Colorful statues of familiar characters and the iconic brontosaurus slide have been essential roadside attractions off State Route 64 in Valle.

Details: 332 S. State Route 64, Valle. 928-635-3072. www.raptor-ranch.com .

Four Corners Monument Navajo Tribal Park

Less of a roadside attraction and more of a cool fun fact you can share, the Four Corners Monument Navajo Tribal Park recognizes the only place in the U.S. where the borders of four states meet. After visiting, you can finally join many Southwestern residents in saying you have been in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona all at the same time.

Details: 597 NM-597, Teec Nos Pos. 928-206-2540.  www.navajonationparks.org.

Meteor Crater

Over 50,000 years ago, an iron-nickel meteorite approximately 150 feet wide collided with what is now northern Arizona. According to the site's website, the impact hit the Earth with a force 150 times greater than an atomic bomb. The crater this meteor left is now the best-preserved meteorite site on Earth and a historic landmark to visit if you are driving near Flagstaff.

Details: Interstate 40, Exit 233, Winslow. 928-289-5898. www.meteorcrater.com .

Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch

If you are heading south near Picacho Peak, it is hard to miss the billboards advertising Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch. Seemingly the only place you can find stingrays, donkeys, deer, parrots and dozens of ostriches in the middle of nowhere, this roadside attraction is a great spot for adults and children to make memories.

Details: 17599 E Peak Lane, Picacho. 520-466-3658.  www.roostercogburn.com .

Standin' on the Corner Park

You don't have to be an Eagles groupie to be familiar with the nod to this Arizona town in one of their most popular songs, "Take it Easy." "Standin' on the corner in Winslow, Arizona ..." is a line memorialized by Winslow residents at Standin' on the Corner Park. A bronze statue of a young musician is a salute to the troubadours who put Winslow on the classic rock map.

Details: Corner of Kinsley Avenue and Second Street in Winslow. 928-289-2434.  www.visitwinslow.com .

Without spoiling the enigma that can be uncovered in Benson, The Thing is a worthy roadside attraction to consider as you head down the I-10. The various billboards that line the highway are hard to miss as you get closer to the "Mystery of the Desert." Located next to a Dairy Queen and a Shell gas station, you can take care of your hunger, gas tank and curiosity at the same time.

Arizona's 'world's largest' roadside wonders

According to a map created by  blog.batchgeo.com , more than 195 roadside attractions in the U.S. consider themselves the “world’s largest” something. These are Arizona's "world's largest" wonders and where they are located.

  • World's Largest Cow Skull, Amado.
  • World's Largest Petrified Tree, Holbrook.
  • World's Largest Map of Old Route 66, Meteor City.
  • World's Largest Kokopelli, Camp Verde.
  • World's Largest Kachina, Carefree.

Giganticus Headicus

Art is completely subjective. To Kingman residents, Giganticus Headicus is one of the most iconic art pieces off Route 66. Created by local artist Gregg Arnold, the tiki-style head is 14 feet tall and bright green. If taking a picture isn't enough, you can further memorialize your time with the head with a miniature from the local gift shop.

Wigwam Village Motel

Need a place to stay overnight? Have you considered a wigwam? This quaint village off Mother Road may be just the eccentric place to spend a night while traveling through the state. Constructed in the 1950s, a night in a wigwam will make you forget why you would want to sleep anywhere else.

Details: 811 W. Hopi Drive, Holbrook. 928-524-3048. sleepinawigwam.com .

Lumberjack muffler man

A familiar face to Northern Arizona University students, the 25-foot-tall muffler man resembles the school's mascot, Louie the Lumberjack. Before being moved outside of the Skydome, the lumberjack was located outside the Lumberjack Cafe and appeared in the background of the 1969 movie "Easy Rider."

Details: 1701 S. San Francisco St., Flagstaff.

Rainbow Rock Shop Dinosaurs

If you're in search of more prehistoric creatures to gape at, stop at the Rainbow Rock Shop as you drive along Route 66. Fans of geodes and other pretty rocks will be able to admire the variety of concrete dinosaurs while searching for their next gem.

Details: 101 Navajo Blvd., Holbrook.

Located near the Mexico border, Dateland is a necessary stop on Interstate 8. A major producer of the Medjool dates, the dry heat provides the perfect climate for cultivating the fruit. Dates are fiber-rich, sweet as candy and contain more potassium than a banana. Try Dateland's world-famous date shake when you visit.

Details: 1737 Ave. 64 E., Dateland. 928-454-2772. www.dateland.com .

London Bridge

You don't need to travel across the world to experience a little European history. As a result of a strange series of events, the London Bridge , which once crossed the River Thames, was broken down and rebuilt in Lake Havasu City by Robert P. McCulloch. This British import attracts tens of thousands of travelers every year.

Details: 1340 McCulloch Blvd. N., Lake Havasu City. 928-453-3444. www.golakehavasu.com .

Take a break from speeding down the highway by cruising through the ponderosa pine forest. An attraction you don't need to get out of your car to enjoy, Bearizona has over three miles of road surrounded by picturesque nature and North American animals. If your legs need a break from sitting in a cramped car, the park also has a 20-acre walk-through area.
