"Travel Assist is currently not available"

  • Add to quote

I've had my 2022 Golf R since the first week in January 2022. The "Tavel Assist is currently not available" alarm, was an issue from the beginning. On my 10 minute drive to the gym, in the morning it would alarm and clear 14 times. In March of this year, someone posted a way to clear/stop this alarm, by squeezing the bottom of the steering wheel. The post was only a couple of days before April 1st, and thought it was a joke. But I tried it, and it worked . I could go days without the alarm. If it did alarm, I would just squeeze the bottom of the steering wheel and it would stop/clear. So all you owners out there, waiting for your back ordered steering wheel, try it. Oh, and by the way, I just had my steer wheel replaced this afternoon. No alarms on the way home. Tomorrow morning will be the test. My VW dealer is located in Whitby, Ontario. The same one I've had since 1984.

I also read that post and I've found that the squeeze works too, though it works better for me when I push the bottom of the steering wheel in. Sure weird and would assume that there is a lose connection in there. How long did you wait for the new Steering Wheel?

Travel assist Errors. UPDATE!!!

www.vwvortex.com

I'm only getting the SOS comm failure message. Dealer is ordering the associated car net module. Anyone else in this situation?

Yeah, dealer will have to work with VW tech support on troubleshooting. It's a tiered approach unless your car is throwing fault codes that directly lead them to surmising a new steering wheel is required. In my case, they tried to replace a radar sensor first - which didn't work. I brought car back in and it was determined that I need a new steering wheel. Current backlog is 80+ on new steering wheels.

I was having the same issues. It's the steering wheel needs to be replaced. My dealer had mine in for this same thing and vw had them order me a new one. Something else I noticed and I hope will be fixed after the new steering wheel gets installed is the sensitivity of the travel assist sensing your hand on the steering wheel. My wife's id4 I can barely rest my hand on the steering wheel and it knows it's there. My golf r always tells me to put my hands on the steering wheel even if they're already there.

Got the call that new steering wheel has arrived. 6 weeks to work through 80 unit backlog, not horrible.

Steering wheel was oryfor mine today, of course it’s on back order

I know right?? Haha

Hi, so obviously this has fixed the issue? Just got the call my replacement wheel is in and now on schedule a week out. I'm just wondering how much is involved, like what actually needs to come apart in order to do the job? Does the mechanic literally sit in the seat and go to town or what? thx in advance

So, new wheel installed for over a month now and warning lights still periodically pop up. Taking it back to the dealer for them to do more investigation. This is third trip in for same issue. Hopefully they can fix it this time around. If it's not the steering wheel, where upstream might the problem lie?

I’m having the same problem now now and have an appointment at my dealership to get this diagnosed in a couple of weeks. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will just be the steering wheel. OP, keep us posted on your progress with this. I’m wishing you the best of luck!

Mine was replaced, lasted for 25 min and the errors came back 😆 it was a long 7 hr drive without cruise control. made another appt for tomorrow.

ugh! That is not encouraging. If it’s still doing this in several months’ time, I can definitely see my year and a half honeymoon with this car coming to an end.

There are folks on other boards who are on their 3rd+ wheel. Try squeezing the wheel hard at the 4-5 and/or 7-8 o-clock positions. This seems to immediately resolve the issue (at least temporarily)

Looks like I'm getting bitten by this bug finally on a more consistent basis. Really happens after cold start and first driving the car. Turn the wheel full lock and it will blip on. Squeeze the wheel and it will go away. Will do this a couple of times if I turn the wheel hard lock, then goes back off. I was talking to the dealership and that is evidently one of the ways they can trip it. The weird thing is after cold start, meaning I stop the car, turn it back on after awhile, it doesn't happen. My guess it's storing codes for each "timestamp" so to speak based on cold starts. That's just a some what intelligent hunch. Either way, I need it to start doing it more frequently so I can bring it in and the dealership can replicate and order a new wheel. Go figure...

Im curious how many owners have this issue. Seems this and the intake runner are common issues..

.... These issues happening on the 20th AE too? I wonder if the 24s will also have the same issue, since new wheels aren't fixing it.

travel assist volkswagen

I had this issue since March and got on the list for a new steering wheel which was replaced in July I believe? I was also lucky enough to have the intake runner flap issue AND my car is apparently consuming about 1 qt of oil per 10k miles. (not a huge amount, but I have been fortunate with previous cars to never have a consumption issue). I'm curious whether the wheel part number actually changed (i.e. a design change), or if it is being replaced with the exact same part.

After it was replaced, did you still have the same error messages about Travel Assist?

No - the errors regarding Travel Assist and Emergency SOS not being available are gone (knock wood). So errors are gone, and TA function is actually useable now.

The other day, I had zero problems with this but this morning. I must have had 30 messages pop up on my 23 minute commute.

It was always very sporadic for me. More common in cold weather than warm, and some days would generate constant errors while others were fine.

I have heard that a KLR module fixes this.

My GTI a 22 model year had this issue. I waited months for diag / loaner. I did end up figuring a way to code out the problem sensors resulted in no chime however it limited my Lane assist I had to actually tilt the wheel and not just touch to keep it ACC working. I ended up trading my car in later for Golf R 20th AE this one has never had the chime on travel assist warning so they must have fixed it on some newer cars. Emergency Assist is currently not available. Warning chime

I didn't think the car was going to be bug/issue free, but I do expect that they be fixed. After 4th trip to dealer and steering wheel replacement, warning lights still present. Not sure I really want to head down the buyback path as I otherwise enjoy the car. However, there has to be an end in sight....right?

short found in camera circuit. New camera being installed. Hopefully this solves it. new steering wheel and new camera.

I’m getting my steering wheel replaced on Tuesday. Wish me luck!

Gosh what a bummer. Be interesting to see a poll of people with issues or none. Im actually holding off until these things are figured out.

Switch Off Travel Assist, Keep ACC

  • Add to quote

I've had my ID.4 for three of the best days of my life. A question: if during a drive I turn on adaptive cruise control and then travel assist, is it possible to turn off travel assist and keep adaptive cruise control going? If I turn them both off (say by tapping the brake), can I turn the adaptive cruise control back on without also turning on travel assist?

travel assist volkswagen

Just press Set only. Then TA is off, but adaptive cruise control is on.

Edit: This doesn't work for me. Are you in the US?

Press the top right button on the left side of the steering wheel (I'm not in the car to get the exact description) lightly. This will turn off TA, but keep ACC on. If you press this button too hard it will go to the total off for both functions.

jopo's suggestion didn't work for me. Edit: This didn't work for me either. What I've been doing up 'till now is pressing the top right button to turn everything off, then pressing the "RES" button to turn ACC back on.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will investigate later today.

I have trouble with long tap-short tap on the 1mph v. 5 mph CC speed increases. I almost always get 5 mph increments. I also had a hard time differentiating with just the short tap to "brake tap" the CC on the steering wheel. It was being recognized as a long tap and disabling CC. Just a tip to be aware of on the CC 0/I button–YWMV.

I have an Euro car. So maybe that works differently(?). Let say I have used brakes (=ACC/TA goes off) and I want ACC only: I press Set to activate ACC only. But when Set is pressed while TA is still on, then pressing Set only sets a different speed for ACC. > TA keeps on. If I want active both I press TA button or Set+TA. If TA is on, I can’t turn only TA off and leave ACC on.

Also on haptic controls, it could be worse.

Is it possible to turn off that "travel assist is unavailable" beep? It's driving me mad!

travel assist volkswagen

Does it turn off with over steering the steering wheel?

Do you mean, does Travel Assist turn off if you give the steering wheel a sharp turn right or left? While using Travel Assist, you can still turn the steering wheel a bit -- for example, to pull to the left side of a lane when passing a bicycle. This does not turn off Travel Assist. I've never tested what would happen if you tried a larger turn of the wheel. Certainly, this is not a way I'd want to turn off Travel Assist routinely! But I guess there's a question whether a sharp turn of the wheel would turn off Travel Assist as a safety measure.

Travel Assist

  • Add to quote

Hi all, Just bought my first VW, a 2021.5 SEL 3.6 4Motion. One of the features that intrigued us was the new Travel Assist, to make road trips just a bit nicer. However, despite every article I can find online, as well as the window sticker, confirming that 2021.5 SELs should have this function, the user manual seems to indicate there should be a specific button on the left side of the steering wheel to activate it. Our steering wheel has the driver assistance settings button here instead, so I'd theorized that maybe as long as all the individual assistance functions were enabled, it might automatically engage when ACC is active. That doesn't seem to be the case, as when I have ACC on I get the separate icons for Lane Assist and ACC rather than the icon for Travel Assist in the digital dash. I've reached out to VW to inquire, but does anyone happen to know if there's some alternate way to engage Travel Assist?

travel assist volkswagen

I am having this same issue. Did you find out any information?

I have not received any response yet. Not sure what the rules are for cross-posting here, but on another forum there has been some discussion that VW has failed to install this feature on early production 2021.5s, and some are showing a corresponding $250 deduction on the window sticker - I do not have that on mine.

Correct, I found this out during my search. The first batch of 2021.5 that were not SEL Premium didnt include Travel Assist. If you have Travel Assist it will be located on the Assist menu screen.

So I was able to get into the closest dealer this morning after coordinating with VW corporate. The conclusion after the dealer verified what I was saying is that, while my window sticker lists Travel Assist as an installed feature, if the dealer pulls up the window sticker based on the VIN, it shows that this is not installed and that there should have been a $250 deduction. The dealer's opinion was that it is not possible to retrofit this. I'm waiting to hear back from the corporate office as to next steps, because I definitely would not have taken delivery of the vehicle if the physical window sticker had been accurate.

What does Travel Assist entail? The VW website doesn't give much detail.

  • set cruise control speed to current speed
  • turn on adaptive cruise control (radar)
  • turn on lane assist and set to hold to center of the lane

travel assist volkswagen

My 2021.5 SEL Rline does have the travel assist button on the left side of the steering wheel, I can show you a picture if you want. Apart from the features above it also sets the speed based on the road signs so going into school zones etc it slows down automatically. I've tested a few times, only had the Atlas 4 days and it works on roads without lines as well.

That's sounds like a useful feature....IF it includes the ability to set your speed based on the signs.....such as if on highways you could set it to +10. Other than school zones and neighborhoods with lower speed limits, I don't think most people drive "the speed limit" especially on highways.

Wanted to follow up for anyone else in the same boat I am - after several weeks of back and forth, VW wrote an acceptable check for the missing feature. I definitely would have preferred an option to have Travel Assist installed, but if someone else with an early build 2021.5 is missing it and also didn't get the credit up front, it is worth the time to go through corporate to get a resolution.

What Is Travel Assist? This Short Video Explains VW’s New ADAS Feature

Carl anthony.

  • July 2, 2020

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan will have a new ADAS featured called Travel Assist. This brief video explains what the system is and how it works. Additionally, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan will include an enhanced version of adaptive cruise control that leverages GPS and map data.

Although it’s not a direct comparison, VW’s Travel Assist sounds similar in functionality to Ford’s Active Drive Assist and  Cadillac’s Super Cruise . However, one of the key differences is that VW’s system does not allow for hands-free operation of the vehicle like Active Drive Assist and Super Cruise. Should a driver take their hands off the wheel of the 2022 Tiguan, a “touch detection” alert will prompt them to regain control.

The 2022 Tiguan will be available in the United States in the fall of 2021.

Emergency Assist 1

Part of the iq.drive safety-enhancing and intelligent technologies.

The VW Emergency Assist system enhances driver safety by monitoring steering wheel activity and delivering alerts if the driver is not actively operating the vehicle . If the driver does not respond, the system can keep the vehicle in its lane and bring it to a controlled stop while activating the hazard lights.

Emergency Assist does not require Travel Assist to be active, but Lane Assist must be enabled.

  • If there is no contact with steering wheel for several seconds, the system will prompt you to take over steering.
  • If there is still no response, there will be an audible alert and brief braking.
  • If there is still no response, the system will slow the vehicle to a stop.
  • Control can be regained at any time by moving the steering wheel, pressing the brake pedal or pressing the acceleration pedal.
  • System will engage automatically , as long as Emergency Assist is switched to ACTIVE.
  • You can switch the system on / off in your digital cockpit or your infotainment screen (available on select models ).
