10 n.j. bands you need to listen to in 2021, like this article share it with your friends.
Posted on July 15, 2021 by Hunter Hulbert - Community
For some misguided people, New Jersey is just a dreary stretch of highway between New York City and their preferred destination. This conceit was concocted by insecure New Yorkers who are now willing to pay double the asking price for your Aunt Mary’s multifamily house in Bloomfield. But we, the true hipsters, know that there is some exotic combination of toxins and nutrients in the air, soil and sand of our Garden State that breeds world-class musicians. The long, long list includes Frank Sinatra (“The Voice”), Bruce Springsteen (“The Boss”) and everybody in between and beyond, including Perth Amboy’s Jon Bon Jovi and Deptford Township’s Patti Smith. Our distinctive blend of ingredients: the Turnpike, the Parkway, the pollution, the cherry blossoms, tomatoes, the Shore, the pizza, the diversity, the volume, the density, the attitude — all these disparate factors have given local artists something to write, sing and shout about.
Today, there is a whole new generation of voices and bosses on the scene, waiting out the pandemic and poised to make their distinctive sounds heard in New Jersey and nationally.

I checked out a small cross section of some of the hottest bands from Exit 172 of the GSP on south to get a sense of what kind of noise Jersey will make in 2021 and beyond. This is just a handful of bands sampled from our teeming music scene, which is as lively and jam-packed as bluefish off the Jersey Shore. Most of them can be found and heard on the site Bandcamp , which The New York Times called “one of the greatest underground culture bazaars of our time.” And they can all be found on YouTube.
I talked with Jay Lustig, longtime music critic for The Star-Ledger, a kind of Obi-Wan Kenobi of Jersey rock. Lustig is now the editor of the invaluable arts website, www.njarts.net , which covers the entire New Jersey arts landscape. “The Jersey music scene is remarkably resilient. Bands are always doing incredible, creative things,” he said. “Once clubs open again, you can drop into one in Jersey City or Asbury Park and other towns and hear great music. The number of bands and their talent continues to astonish me after writing about music for 40 years.”
The Outcrops’ sound is a clean, no-frills mix of rock, folk and pop. Photo courtesy of The Outcrops
One of the bands he recommended was The Outcrops , based way up north in Sussex County. Formed in 2016 by lead guitarist Bryan Schroeder and singer/rhythm guitarist, Cassidy Rain (both self-taught musicians), the rest of the foursome is bassist Jason Casanovas and drummer Dave Moore. Makin’ Waves named them 2020’s Band of the Year .
Their sound is a clean, no-frills mix of rock, folk and pop, influenced, perhaps, by their chill, bucolic Sussex County surroundings. To top it off, they’re very photogenic. “Rock ‘n’ roll is really a stew of all different styles of music,” Schroeder said.
Founded in 2010 by childhood friends Evan Stephens Hall, center, in teal, and Zack Levine, center, in dark blue, Pinegrove’s style has been called a mix of alt-country and emo and includes a banjo. Photo courtesy of Pinegrove
Lustig also recommended Montclair’s Pinegrove . Founded in 2010 by childhood friends Evan Stephens Hall (lead singer and guitarist) and Zack Levine (drummer), who remain the core members, their style has been called a mix of alt-country and emo and includes a banjo. They learned their craft in Montclair basements, and their second album, “ Cardinal,” was recorded in one.
It went on to be on many critics’ “best of” lists. The New York Times described them as “poised to increase their audience significantly.” Their indie/luxe sound retains some welcome basement echoes, and their chill, intelligent lyrics elevate it.
The Screaming Females have been around since 2005 and got their start in New Brunswick’s basement club scene, where underage kids could hear the music. Photo courtesy of Screaming Females
A lot of good bands are clustered around “The Hub City” — New Brunswick. It’s the home of Rutgers University, has a gritty, urban feel, and a good club scene. The Screaming Females , led by the ferocious Marissa Paternoster on vocals and guitar, with Jarrett Dougherty on bass and Mike (“King Mike”) Abbate on drums, has a loyal, cult following. They’ve been around since 2005 and got their start in New Brunswick’s basement club scene, where underage kids could hear the music. Screaming Females is not new but definitely worth checking out. Everything you need to know about life in New Jersey can be heard in Paternoster’s magnificent pipes.
Cook Thugless performed with Wyclef Jean at The Miracle Theater in Inglewood, Calif. on Jan. 24, 2020. Photo courtesy of Cook Thugless
Cook Thugless describe themselves as “an independent hip-hop act.” The name is a play on the Cook/Douglass Campus of Rutgers, where the band first came together in 2012. Everybody in the seven-member collective can handle vocals, but in live performances, Jean-Louis Droulers and Jack Blerry are the frontmen rappers along with Koi Cola. Jahmar Beaubrun (“J Titty”), the drummer, raps as well, and for live shows, Riley Byrne is on bass, Jace Limb is on guitar, Brian Clines is on saxophone and Keith Lalley is on the trombone.
Their 17-track release, “ Money ,” got this rave from Bob Makin: “ ‘ Money’ proves that rap and hip-hop can uplift the soul and improve the mind.” Their single, “ Lockjaw ,” went national in 2019.
Despite the edge of Raw Webb, there is a soft soul underneath. Photo courtesy of Raw Webb
New Brunswick rapper Raw Webb worked his way into making music by being a DJ. His no-frills music is blunt, gritty, unapologetic and, in its forthrightness, has a universal appeal. The vibe of his lively, historic hometown saturates his distinct sound. His tune, “ What You Hatin’ For ,” asks the question and answers it. Despite the edge, there is a soft soul underneath.
Formed in 2011, Iselin-based Palisades has been described as ‘post-hardcore’ led by potent vocals. Photo courtesy of Palisades
Not that far away, the band Palisades holds court in Iselin. Formed in 2011, they’ve been described as “post-hardcore.” Lead singer Lou Miceli’s scorching, take-no-prisoners voice drives the band, and he’s sometimes joined by bassist Brandon Elgar and lead guitarist, Xavier Adams, as well as Aaron Rosa on drums and Matthew Marshall on rhythm guitar. They have a few records out, and last year’s “ Erase the Pain ” is potent and testosterone-driven. I had a fantasy of a Miceli/Palisades, Paternoster/Screaming Females duet, but that might require a blast shield.
Heading down the Garden State Parkway to Exit 102, we arrive in historic Asbury Park, the ancestral home of Jersey rockers and still a magnet for the next generations. Starting in the 1960s with the legendary Upstage Club, where a young Springsteen asked the club’s owner if he could play onstage while the other musicians were on break. Sure, she said — and history was made. Asbury had the beach and “The Circuit,” a mile-long strip that was loaded with clubs, bars and hangouts, all just a few steps from the Atlantic Ocean.
Deal Casino’s sound has been described as ‘urgent and groove heavy,’ but lead singer Joe Parella’s throaty vocals cut through the bass and cannot be ignored. Photo courtesy of NJ Advance Media
Like Pinegrove, Asbury Park’s Deal Casino is another band with deep, childhood roots. They originally got together while still in grammar school in Sparta. Their name comes from the ritzy Shore town not far from Asbury Park.
Their sound has been described as “urgent and groove heavy,” but lead singer Joe Parella’s throaty vocals cut through the bass and cannot be ignored.
At first glance, the Teenage Halloween group looks like somebody’s mom dropped them off at your kid’s Halloween party. But these ‘power pop queer punks’ mean business. Photo courtesy of Teenage Halloween
Just down the road from Deal Casino is Teenage Halloween . Music site Stereogum described their sound as “big, hearty, hooks-out punk rock.” At first glance, they look like somebody’s mom dropped them off at your kid’s Halloween party. But these “power pop queer punks” mean business.
When lead singer Luke Hendricks opens his mouth, the sound is raw, ragged and wise beyond its years. The rest of the band includes Tricia Marshall on bass/vocal, Eli Frank on lead guitar, Jane Lai on piano, Peter Gargano on drums and Hakim Diran on sax.
The delicate, wistful and electric voice that drives Bottled Blonde of Asbury Park is Mackenzie Brown. Photo courtesy of Bottled Blonde
The opposite of Luke Hendricks’ vocals is Mackenzie Brown’s come-hither voice “begging you to lean a little closer,” as The Star-Ledger said. That voice drives Bottled Blonde of Asbury Park. It sounds delicate and wistful at first hearing, but there is an electric undercurrent underneath Brown’s mysterious phrasing and cool demeanor. That undercurrent informs the band’s spikey, idiosyncratic tunes and canny lyrics .
With Remember Jones’ brassy backup band and great pipes, the result is pure showmanship and unvarnished charisma. Photo courtesy of Jay Lustig
Lustig mentioned an artist named Remember Jones (a name that’s hard to forget). Based in Asbury Park as well, Remember Jones is a singer and a band, described as a soul/pop singer, storyteller and bandleader. His/their style is reminiscent of the early days of Chicago . He has great pipes that can purr, riff and soar.
With his brassy backup band, the result is pure showmanship and unvarnished charisma. Part of his backstory is that he’s a weight loss survivor, having lost 200 pounds 10 years ago.
As we shake off the pandemic’s dust and happily wander into the summer sunlight, it’s still unclear how many of New Jersey’s favorite music venues will reopen: The Stone Pony , The Saint , The Stanhope House , White Eagle Hall , The Clubhouse and others could, would and should be jammed with music lovers and their pent-up aching need for our balls-out, homegrown Jersey sound. Whatever the case, Jersey-tough musicians will be making music wherever they can: in arenas, clubs (or their parking lots) and in basements and garages across the state. Keep your ears open.
Manuel Igrejas has worked in the theater as a playwright and a publicist on and off-Broadway. He was the publicist for Blue Man Group for 15 years, and his other clients have included Richard Foreman, John Leguizamo, Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, STREB, Julie Harris and Peak Performances.

Great article thanks!! You should check out The Harrisons at TheHarrisonsBand.com Just saw them at two live venues recently in Sussex County, NJ and they are an amazing duo. They do covers and original music as well. Cheers.
There’s a new bound in the Burlington NJ area I heard that was good called “IInclusion” has a feisty drummer that could sit in most anywhere. Their keyboardist is splitting time between gigs and interviews for his producing experience. Great listen!
