Who Owns Seabourn Cruise Line?

Seabourn is a luxury cruise line that was established in 1987. It is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, and is one of the subsidiaries of the Carnival Corporation, the largest cruise company in the world.

Carnival Corporation & plc

Carnival Corporation is a dual-listed company that was formed in 2003, following the merger between Carnival Corporation and P&O Princess Cruises. Carnival Corporation is registered in Panama and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange. The company has a market capitalisation of approximately $19 billion and operates 105 ships under 10 different brands, including Seabourn.

Seabourn was acquired by Carnival Corporation & plc in 1991. Since then, the luxury line has become a significant part of the Carnival Group portfolio. Originally known as “Yachts of Seabourn”, the cruise line changed its name to simply “Seabourn” in 2010.

Seabourn Cruise Line operates five ships and two expedition ships, which offer luxury cruises to various destinations around the world. The ships are Seabourn Odyssey , Seabourn Sojourn , Seabourn Quest , Seabourn Encore , and Seabourn Ovation . The expedition ships are Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture .

The cruise line has won numerous awards for its exceptional service, dining, and accommodations. It is consistently recognised as one of the best luxury cruise lines in the world. In 2017, Seabourn was named the “Best Small-Ship Cruise Line” by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.

Despite being a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc, Seabourn Cruise Line operates independently and has its own management team. The company’s president is Richard Meadows, who has been with Seabourn since 2011. Meadows has extensive experience in the cruise industry and has previously worked for Holland America Line and Cunard Line, both of which are also subsidiaries of Carnival Corporation & plc.

Carnival Corporation Sells Seabourn Odyssey to MOL Group

  • March 16, 2023

Seabourn Odyssey

Carnival Corporation and its luxury Seabourn brand have announced the sale of the 450-guest, 2009-built Seabourn Odyssey to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), which currently operates a one-ship Japanese cruise line with the Nippon Maru.

Following the sale, Seabourn will continue to operate all published voyages through August 22, 2024, under a charter arrangement.

The Seabourn Odyssey will then be delivered to MOL after the charter agreement.

Of note, it’s the 26th ship to exit the Carnival Corp. fleet since 2020.

“We are proud that Seabourn Odyssey carried our guests across the world for the last 14 years and are happy to see her join a great company, MOL,” said Seabourn President Natalya Leahy. “As we prepare to say farewell to Odyssey in September 2024, I am excited to further optimize our fleet as we grow our expedition business. With the addition of Seabourn Pursuit this summer, Seabourn will have one of the most modern fleets in the ultra-luxury segment with an average age of just seven years.”

The company said that Seabourn’s fleet expansion into the ultra-luxury expedition market allows for a more diverse offering of deployment opportunities, which will lead to new and exciting itineraries across all seven continents with a higher guest capacity compared to 2019 even after Seabourn Odyssey’s departure.

“With this elite, modern fleet, Seabourn continues as the leader in ultra-luxury travel, providing highly curated and immersive experiences and unique ‘Seabourn Moments’ for our guests,” Leahy said.

Warm-weather expedition cruises offer adventures that feel 'more like vacation'

Portrait of Nathan Diller

At first, all I could see was what looked like a light gray stick.

But as our Zodiac boat slowly approached a mud bank in Western Australia 's Kimberley region, a thick, scaly tail and a mouth that appeared to be curled in a jagged smirk came into view. “Ladies and gentlemen, we have a crocodile,” said Robin West, general manager and vice president of Expedition Operations and Planning for Seabourn, who was driving.

The reptile was the first of six or seven saltwater crocodiles we saw during a tour of Hunter River and Porosus Creek in late June (there was some debate about the final tally among my companions). The area, also home to mangroves, mudskippers and other wildlife was one of the stops on our 10-day trip through the Kimberley aboard Seabourn Pursuit, the cruise line’s newest expedition vessel.

After about two hours in the roughly 90-degree heat, I was beat by the time we got back to the ship. I took a cue from some of the crocodiles we’d seen lounging in the sun and spent much of the rest of the day reading and admiring the view from the vessel’s shaded open decks.

Cold-weather destinations like Antarctica and the Arctic get a lot of love among expedition cruises, but there are perks to exploring a warmer locale.

Expedition plus pleasure cruise

My Kimberley itinerary combined the kinds of educational and immersive activities nature lovers expect from an expedition with elements that felt like a pleasure cruise.

“It can definitely be very relaxing,” said Claire Maguire, a travel agent and franchise owner at Cruise Planners.

The temperatures hovered between 80 and 90 degrees during my trip, with sunshine nearly every day. As a result, when I wasn’t in a Zodiac or exploring various ports on foot, I often sat on my suite balcony or ate meals at outdoor tables by the ship’s infinity pool, surrounded by sandstone peaks and turquoise water.

By contrast, when I took an Antarctica cruise in December, the temperatures were milder than I expected but still too chilly to comfortably spend much time on the outer decks.

“It does feel more like a vacation, I think,” Maguire said. “Sometimes the cold weather can seem a little bit more like work. This one is a little bit more laid back, it's slow-paced, it's relaxed.” On my cruise, we only disembarked once a day most of the time, giving guests time to attend lectures about the region from expedition team members, visit the spa or gym, or just laze around.

The luxury line also pampered guests in a way that made the adventure more cushy.

One afternoon, after venturing to see the Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay – a sideways waterfall effect caused by water squeezing through cliff passages – we cruised toward another Zodiac that our guide said may have broken down. But as we approached the boat, occupied by other members of the expedition team and crew, they presented us with Champagne and popsicles (that wouldn’t be the last time either).

What are the other benefits of warm-weather expeditions?

Different destinations mean different gear, and with warm weather, you can leave long underwear and parkas at home.

“You obviously have to pack a lot less specific clothing,” said Maguire. “That’s another advantage. You don’t have to take a lot of heavy layers or anything like that, which is nice.”

Getting in and out of Zodiacs felt less of a production than in Antarctica, for instance, where I had to dress in base layers, waterproof pants, boots, a hat, and more every time I disembarked.

There are some essentials travelers should have, though, including sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat. I forgot that last one and would have likely burned were it not for the kindness of other folks onboard with extras. Seabourn and many other operators have packing lists for reference, as well.

Maguire also recommended wearing long sleeves, particularly if you plan to swim. Warm-weather destinations generally make getting in the water easier and more pleasant (no disrespect to the polar plunge ). We even did so in the Kimberley, where swimming is only possible in select places due to crocodiles.

One morning, we went snorkeling at Ashmore Reef in water that had been hovering around the high 70s. Roughly 45 minutes of swimming among coral, fish and blue sea stars passed in what felt like 10.

And if penguins and polar bears are the faces of Antarctic and Arctic expeditions, respectively, crocodiles may hold that distinction in the Kimberley. But there’s plenty more for wildlife enthusiasts to watch for, from brahminy kites to nurse sharks.

How much does an expedition in Kimberley cost?

Prices vary by operator, sailing date, room category and other factors, but a 10-day Kimberley expedition with Seabourn departing on June 27, 2025, starts at $10,999 per person based on double occupancy. The fare includes meals, wines and spirits, Wi-Fi and more.

Nature can make you feel small: You should seek that feeling when traveling

Where else can I take a warm-weather expedition?

The Kimberley’s not the only option if the cold isn’t your thing. Cruise operators offer itineraries in the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, and Indonesian islands like Bali and the Raja Ampat archipelago, which Maguire noted “is an amazing location for snorkeling and diving.”

She also recommended destinations like Africa, where she said guests could combine a cruise with a safari on land, and the Mediterranean, where she went hunting for truffles and visited a horse farm on a recent expedition.

“You definitely do more off-the-beaten-path activities (than a regular cruise),” she said.

One of the world's best-known luxury cruise brands to shrink in size with ship sale

Gene Sloan

Another major cruise line is downsizing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luxury line Seabourn on Thursday announced it had sold one of its six vessels — the 458-passenger Seabourn Odyssey — to a Japanese company that offers cruises aimed at the Japanese market.

The buyer of the ship, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., will charter it back to Seabourn for the next 17 months so that Seabourn can continue offering all the departures that are currently on Seabourn Odyssey's schedule. No sailings will be canceled.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter

Seabourn Odyssey's last voyage for Seabourn is now Aug. 22, 2024.

First unveiled in 2009, Seabourn Odyssey is the oldest of Seabourn's six vessels. It has sailed for the line for all its 14 years in service.

"We are proud that Seabourn Odyssey carried our guests across the world for the last 14 years and are happy to see her join a great company, MOL," Seabourn president Natalya Leahy said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

The departure of Seabourn Odyssey will represent a significant downsizing for the Seabourn brand, which is considered one of the leaders in luxury cruising. The ship currently accounts for about 16% of Seabourn's passenger capacity.

Related: The 8 best luxury cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity

Seabourn Odyssey's departure from the Seabourn fleet comes as the line's parent company, Carnival Corporation, struggles to put its financial house back in order following a massive, multiyear downturn in revenues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The downturn forced the company to take on an enormous amount of debt to stay solvent — debt that must now be paid down. As of December, the company's total debt stood at $34.55 billion, up from less than $12 billion at the start of 2020.

For context, Carnival Corporation — the parent company of Seabourn, Carnival Cruise Line , Princess Cruises and six other cruise brands — made about $2.9 billion in profits in its last good year (2019).

Carnival Corporation's recent financial maneuvers included shedding its least profitable ships, cutting service on remaining ships and increasing fees for shipboard services in an effort to cut costs and boost revenue.

Carnival Corporation has also paused new ship orders for its nine brands for now.

Seabourn didn't say how much money the sale of Seabourn Odyssey would raise for Carnival Corporation's coffers.

Related: Carnival Corporation doesn't rule out brand sale to raise cash

In all, Carnival Corporation has shed 26 vessels across its nine brands since the start of the pandemic. It went into the pandemic with 105 vessels. The downsizing has included the removal of four ships from the company's Holland America brand and six ships from its Carnival Cruise Line brand .

Even as it sheds one of its six existing vessels, Seabourn is preparing to welcome a new ship to its fleet. Due in August, the 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit will be a small expedition ship of the same design as its 7-month-old Seabourn Venture .

Given its small size, Seabourn Pursuit will only partially make up for the lost passenger capacity caused by the removal of Seabourn Odyssey.

Three Seabourn ships sold to Windstar owner

This site contains affiliate links for which we may be compensated.

Seabourn, the ultra-luxe six-ship cruise line, has sold their three oldest and smallest ships to Xanterra Parks & Resorts, owner of Windstar Cruises. The three ships being sold are the Seabourn Pride, Seabourn Spirit and the Seabourn Legend. The transition of ownership will be completed by May 2015. Seabourn’s three newest ships, each with more than double the cabins of their predecessors, may see a new addition to the family in the next couple of years.

Seabourn Spirit

“Seabourn remains dedicated to our mission of creating the world’s finest travel experiences through our small-ship cruising product,” said Seabourn president Richard Meadows. “Our three newest vessels, Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Sojourn, and Seabourn Quest have raised the bar for ultra-luxury cruising and we intend to add a fourth ship of similar design,” he continued. “Seabourn is already in discussion with shipbuilders and an order is likely to be announced within the current fiscal year. The new ship will allow Seabourn to maintain much of its current guest capacity.”

According to Seabourn, all published voyages for the Seabourn Pride, Seabourn Spirit and Seabourn Legend will not be affected by the sale and the transfer of ownership will occur after each ship completes its current schedule. The Seabourn Pride will be transferred in April, 2014 while the Seabourn Spirit and Seabourn Legend will be transferred to Windstar in April 2015 and May 2015, respectively.

Windstar Wind Surf refurbished suite

The addition of these three small ships will double the size of Windstar’s fleet. Currently, Windstar operates three luxurious, masted sailing ships throughout Europe and the Caribbean. In 2014, Windstar will return to Tahiti with the recently refurbished 148-passenger Wind Spirit sailing 7-night cruises from Papeete, Tahiti.

Windstar Wind Surf in the Caribbean

There’s even a new name for this fleet expansion project, Global Windstar, which will catapult Windstar to become the cruise industry leader in small ship cruising. Each of the six ships in the new Windstar fleet will carry no more than 300 passengers, with no more than 208 guests on the three Seabourn ships.

“Windstar is proud of its heritage in sailing and will continue to offer voyages on all three sailing yachts,” said Hans Birkholz, Windstar’s chief executive officer. “What our guests continue to be enthusiastic about is our intimate, yacht style of cruising. This style is the core of our brand experience and the new ships are a perfect fit to build on that foundation.”

Sailing Seabourn in the Owner’s Suite

Seabourn Odyssey

Guest blogger Maureen Hudson shares her recent experience sailing on the Seabourn Owner’s Suite on Odyssey, on a Venice to Athens itinerary.

Within the span of an hour, we traveled through centuries, leaving the 14th-century opulence of Hotel Danieli to board the sleek, clean-lined Seabourn Odyssey, a 450-passenger, all-suite ship built in 2009.

Our first cruise with Seabourn, the seven-day Adriatic and Greek Isles cruise from Venice to Athens, seemed perfect to celebrate the 25th wedding anniversary of my sister and her husband. The experience was made even more perfect because we were upgraded from our Penthouse Suites to a Seabourn Owner’s Suite, and boarded eagerly, awaiting the big reveal.

Our Seabourn Owner’s Suite

At 526 square feet, the Seabourn Owner’s Suites are larger than most hotel rooms.

Located at the most forward part of the ship, our well-appointed suite was cheerfully decorated in neutrals with burgundy accents for a pop of color. A stunning orchid arrangement, a chilled bucket of champagne, a fruit platter, and canapés were set out to welcome us.

The spacious main room of the Seabourn Owner’s Suite included a dining table for four, a comfortable chaise sofa with a flat-screen TV, and a half bath conveniently located next to the fully stocked in-suite wet bar and pantry.

French doors led to a separate room with a queen-sized bed, another flat-screen TV, and a granite bathroom with a double sink, a separate bath and shower, and a walk-in closet with built-in drawers to die for.

The jaw-dropping wrap-around wood balcony with rattan loungers, armchairs and tables provided additional living space and a superb vantage point for gazing at the ever-changing scenery.

Relaxing on the balcony while sipping tea and coffee, my husband Tom and I had front-row seats to our morning sail into the stunning Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, threading its way through the fjord-like steep green cliffs, past Venetian fortifications to the medieval town, a UNESCO world heritage site.

An ambiance of casual elegance

As two-time cruisers with another luxury line, we were unsure what to expect onboard Seabourn.

Having read the accolades, we anticipated an upscale, all-inclusive, small-ship cruising experience with superb dining and service. Yet Seabourn’s reputation for a more casual environment that attracted younger crowds worried us.

Our vision of a serene, blue-water Mediterranean cruise did not include crying babies or blaring music on the pool deck, or relentless loudspeaker broadcasts of deck activities.

Our fears dissipated that first evening. Seabourn’s atmosphere of casual elegance simply meant less formal, not any less refined. Think fine dining without the highbrow service, sophistication without the stuffiness.

The dress code most evenings was designated as Elegant Casual or Resort Casual. Particularly for shorter itineraries with one formal optional night, it’s hardly worth packing a tuxedo and dress shoes. Slacks and a jacket will do nicely for gentlemen; a blouse with a skirt or slacks or a cocktail dress is fine for ladies.

Yes, there were plenty of affluent boomers onboard but hardly any babies. As for loudspeaker announcements, we wound up looking forward each day to the pleasant greetings and infectious enthusiasm of Ms. Sophie Tehrani, our Cruise Director.

The public areas of the ship strike a comfortable balance between quiet, personal space and inviting social spaces to meet and mingle with new friends. With open bars throughout the ship and fine wines poured at lunch and dinner, Tom and I easily adapted to this more approachable style of pampered luxury.

A chat with the Captain

While onboard, I spoke with the Captain, David Bathgate, to better understand Seabourn’s business model.

Born in 1963 near Edinburgh, the Captain fit in perfectly with Seabourn’s affinity for attracting a younger clientele. He rose quickly through the marine ranks and attained his first command at the age of 35.

According to Bathgate, unlike many cruise companies who hire through agencies, Seabourn employs most of their crew. Consequently, employees have pride as part of the team, co-ownership of the product, and routinely exceed guest expectations.

Indeed we found the crew to be remarkably intuitive, practically clairvoyant and genuinely eager to please at every turn.

Captain David Bathgate (Credit: Maureen Hudson)

Bathgate added, “One of the key attractions is the size of the ship and the ratio of passengers to the crew. There is almost a one-to-one guest-crew ratio that provides for a certain intimacy that works very well and is very popular with Seabourn’s guests.”

With only 229 ocean-view suites and its 450-guest capacity, passengers get looked after pretty darn well.

Bathgate also discussed the personality of the ship, noting that the layout and style make it feel very personable. Indeed, within the first few hours onboard, I felt surprisingly at home. The variety of restaurant choices, and the mix of bars, lounges, and entertainment, along with its light and fresh décor, give the ship an inviting, contemporary vibe.

Dining onboard

The Odyssey has four outstanding dining venues, each with its own distinctive menu, and all-day in-suite dining. Most venues are open seating and reservations are required only in the smallest restaurant, Restaurant 2, offering tasting menus.

At The Restaurant, we indulged in gourmet dining that rivaled many four-star restaurants. Chef de Cuisine Martin Kitzing enjoys creating local dishes and looks for something that fits in with the place the ship is sailing. His signature dish: Pecorino cream cheese ravioli with olives and Prosecco sauce.

Chef Martin Kitzing (Credit: Maureen Hudson)

The Colonnade is an airy indoor-outdoor casual venue with hot and cold food stations featuring rotating culinary themes. We sampled Old English, Indian and Thai themes during the week. While Old English food sounded off-putting to me, I’m still dreaming of the Pan Fried Dover Sole we devoured at lunch.

The Patio Grill is a convenient, inviting poolside location for a casual lunch or dinner, and of course, cocktails. The Seabourn Square coffee bar serving cookies, cake pastries, gelato, and finger sandwiches, is the preferred haven for Starbucks-deprived guests in need of a pick-me-up.

Entertainment options after dinner included piano music in the Observation Bar and more lively band music and dancing at The Club. Befitting its atmosphere of casual elegance, we relaxed on the Patio Bar, listening to beautiful guitar music under the sky.

Time well spent passes quickly

While the cuisine is undoubtedly the star attraction, the award-winning spa is a close second.

The two-deck health spa and salon, with a hydro pool and heated loungers, is the ultimate way to wind down after a day of sightseeing. Right next to the spa is a fully equipped, ocean-view gym with complimentary yoga and Pilates classes should you feel the need to work off Chef Martin’s delights.

As part of Seabourn’s Conversation program, guests get to share their passions with luminaries from the arts, sciences, history and current affairs and engage in learning experiences with fellow passengers. While our husbands soaked up historical lectures previewing the next day’s port, my sister and I would settle in for afternoon tea or cocktails at the Observation Bar.

The line offers a variety of shore excursions, including both group and private tours with a range of styles (motor coaches, boats, private cars, and minivans) and levels of difficulty (easy, moderate and considerable walking).

In addition to general interest tours, Seabourn features epicurean and adventure collection tours, such as exploring Corfu by mountain bike or 4×4 self-drive vehicles. Tours generally depart early, around 8:30 am and last from 3-7 hours. As part of its alliance with UNESCO to help protect World Heritage sites, Seabourn invites speakers with special knowledge onboard to offer guests deeper insights about World Heritage sites.

Hands down, the Seabourn Signature Epicurean poolside party was the most fun event of the week. We joined fellow guests and ship officers for caviar with some tasty morsels and Ouzo.

Later that evening, we enjoyed a hilarious comedy show called The Liar’s Club, where the audience is invited to figure out who among the professional panelists of liars is telling the truth or a pack of lies.

The week sailed by without enough time to try many of the activities onboard, such as complimentary kayaking, pedal-boating and water skiing from the back of the ship on Marina Day; shopping with Chef Martin; social bridge, golf putting contests, Jive and Zumba classes; and the Big Screen Popcorn Movie night.

A week’s time in the Seabourn Owner’s Suite was just not enough. Newly converted to Seabourn’s relaxed style of luxury, we departed wanting another, longer adventure. Can’t wait.

Wow, Seabourne sounds wonderful! That suite, the food, the excursions…

Maureen sure returned “wowed”! I had a wonderful trip on Seabourn’s Spirit years ago. It’s a great line!

A very interesting read. When we sailed on Azamara last year, there were some Seabourn refugees who said they found the Seabourn “crowd” too old. Mind you, these refugees were not spring chickens themselves. Maybe some day I’ll have the opportunity to do the comparison myself.

Very often, the demographic mix is also a matter of the itinerary and timing, don’t you think? I haven’t noticed huge age differences on ocean-going vessels.

Hi Irene and Maureen,

It seems one of the big benefits of ocean or river cruising is the lectures. I would be all about the historical and cultural lectures. Thanks for the thorough review! ~Josie

Seabourn is classy as it is. Sailing in the owner’s suite must have been quite something! The really nice thing about cruising on the “six-star” lines are the inclusions – complimentary wines, water activities, often excursions. Glad you enjoyed your trip!
