How to search open tabs in safari on mac.

Find that one missing tab in your overloaded Safari tab bar.

Quick Links

Searching tabs using "tab overview".

When you have dozens of tabs open in a Safari window, it becomes difficult to find a specific tab in the tab bar. Here's how to quickly search open tabs within the current window in Safari on Mac.

Safari's Tab Overview screen (similar to the tab switcher on iPhone and iPad) includes a built-in feature that lets you search through all the open tabs in the current window. The only drawback is that if you have multiple Safari windows open, you'll have to perform this action in each window.

To get started, open Safari on your Mac and visit several sites in multiple tabs. Then, click the Tab Overview button (which looks like one square overlapping another) in the top-right corner of the Safari window.

(Alternately, you can select View > Tab Overview in the menu bar or press Shift+Command+\ on your keyboard.)

You will now see all your open tabs in a grid view that Apple calls "Tab Overview." If you're using a modern version of Safari on your Mac, you'll see a "Search Tabs" bar in the top-right corner.

(If you don't see the search bar there, scroll up to reveal it. We recommend that you update Safari immediately  because using an older browser is a huge security hazard .)

On the Tab Overview screen of Safari 14 and up, simply start typing the name of the website or the title of the page that you're searching for---there's no need to click the search bar. On older versions of Safari, you'll need to click the search bar first or press Command+F.

Safari will instantly start filtering your results. When you find the tab you're looking for, click its thumbnail to switch to it.

Use it as much as you'd like to search through your tabs. If you use Safari as the default browser on your iPhone or iPad, this feature is available in the mobile version of Safari as well !

How to search Safari tabs across all your devices, instantly

By Charlie Sorrel • 11:00 am, December 7, 2017

safari

You’re going to love this one if you’re a keyboard-shortcut user. And if you’re not, then this tip might be the thing that finally converts you. Did you know that you can quickly search across all open Safari tabs on all your devices, just by hitting a key-combo and then typing?

Show all tabs on Mac

This tip has two parts, although that makes it sound way more complex than it actually is. The first part is Safari’s Tab Overview , the cool grid-like view of thumbnails showing all the open tabs in the current window. Can get to this in a few ways. One is to pinch in on your Magic Trackpad. Another is to click the Tabs Overview icon in Safari’s toolbar. It’s the icon that looks alike a square laying on top of another square. Another way is to mouse up to the menubar and choose View>Show All Tabs .

And finally, the quickest way of all is to hit ⇧-⌘- on the keyboard (this combo also works on iOS, as we’ll see below).

Safari’s Tab Overview is a great feature already, but the reason we mention it here is that you have to invoke it in order to search through those same tabs.

Safari tab search

Typing filters all your open tabs, and shows only those which match.

To search your open tabs in Safari on the Mac , you just have to start typing. Safari narrows the results as you type, presenting only the tabs whose titles match your search string.

Amazingly, it also includes any tabs you have open on other devices. So, if you search in Safari on your Mac, the results will include tabs from Safari on your iPhone, your iPad, or any other Mac you use. Just start typing.

Weirdly, the search doesn’t include tabs from other windows open in Safari on the same machine . That means you’ll have to switch between Safari windows to search in each one. That seems like an absurd omission, but then again, I guess most folks just use a single, with a zillion tabs open in it.

iOS tab search

Search across all your iCloud tabs also works on iOS.

Tab search also works on iOS with or without a keyboard. Hit the same key combo to see all tabs in a grid: ⇧-⌘-, or pinch to zoom out to the tab overview.

To search tabs, either tap into the Search tabs field at top left, or hit ⌘-F and start typing. This only searches tabs open on your local device, showing a thumbnail of any matching tabs. The tabs on other devices — your iCloud Tabs — show up as lists at the bottom of this view, and are not included in the narrowing-down of the search.

Can also be done using pinch gesture to get to the thumbnail tab grid, and then tapping in the search field to search.

Custom search key

I love this feature so much that I set up a custom keyboard shortcut so I can use the otherwise-defunct application menu key on my Windows-layout keyboard to trigger Safari’s Tab Overview on my Mac. The key is in the bottom row, and I can hit it with my little finger to trigger both the overview and the search. In most cases, though, the overview is enough, and way better than mousing over the tiny tab titles to find what you’re after.

macOS: How to Manage Multiple Open Safari Tabs

Browser tabs in Safari are a great way to visit multiple webpages in the same browsing session without having to close any of them, which makes them particularly useful for cross-referencing and researching things online.

safari icon blue banner

1. Bookmark All Open Tabs

safari

If the browser tabs you have open are related and you plan to regularly revisit them, it's worth bookmarking them together in their own bookmark folder. To do so, simply select Bookmarks -> Add Bookmarks for These X Tabs... (X being the number of open tabs).

You'll then be invited to create a name for the bookmark folder and select where you want it to be kept amongst your other bookmarks, which you can access at any time by selecting Bookmarks -> Show Bookmarks in the menu bar.

Note that you can perform a similar action to add all open tabs to your Reading List for later perusal, even when you're offline. ( Bookmarks -> Add These X Tabs to Reading List .)

2. Use Tab Groups

safari

In macOS Monterey, Tab Groups are a neat way to save and manage related tabs without having to have those tabs active and taking up space. If you're planning a trip, for example, you can save all of your tabs into a "Vacation" group, accessing them when needed and leaving your device free for other content when you're not doing active planning.

To create a new Tab Group, click the Show Sidebar icon next to the traffic lights, then select New Tab Group . Alternately, click the down arrow next to the Show Sidebar icon and select either New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group With X Tabs , "X" being the number of tabs currently open.

Any Tab Groups you create are listed in the sidebar for easy switching. You can also select groups by clicking the down arrow next to the Show Sidebar icon. Any tabs that are opened when a Tab Group is selected will automatically be included in that group. For more tips on working with Tab Groups, check out our dedicated how-to .

3. Change Safari's Tab Layout

safari

Safari offers two tab layouts: Compact and Separate. Compact is a more unified Safari design that does away with the dedicated URL and search interface and makes any individual tab able to be used for navigation input.

The problem with the Compact layout is that it severely limits space for multiple open tabs. In this regard, the Separate layout is more preferable, as it positions the URL/search bar at the top of the Safari window, with your tabs arranged below it.

If you're not already using the Separate tab layout, you can switch to it easily enough by selecting Safari -> Preferences... in the menu bar. Click the Tabs menu in the preference pane and select Tab Layout: Separate to remove the compact tab bar that merges everything together.

4. Rearrange Open Tabs

safari

Sometimes you may have several open tabs from a handful of websites that you tend to visit but which are mixed up with other tabs from different places across the web.

In such cases, it can be useful to rearrange your tabs so that tabs from the same website are lined up next to each other, allowing you to easily review what you've read and dispense with any redundant tabs that were hiding between them.

To sort your tabs according to website, or title if you prefer, simply right-click any tab and select Arrange Tabs By -> Website or Title from the dropdown menu.

5. Pin Tabs

safari

Safari's pinned tabs feature lets you better organize your tabs, especially if find you have too many open at the same time. It's particularly useful if you have certain websites that you tend to visit frequently throughout the day.

The neat thing about pinned tabs is that they stay in place, even when you open a new Safari window or quit and reopen Safari. And when you click a link to another website from a pinned tab, the other website opens in a new tab, ensuring your pinned tab always shows the website you pinned.

To pin a tab, drag the tab to the leftmost side of the tab bar, and when the tab shrinks to show just the website's favicon, simply drop it in place. You can also select Window -> Pin Tab from the menu bar, or right-click (Ctrl-click) a tab, then choose Pin Tab from the contextual menu.

If you have multiple pinned tabs, you can rearrange them in the Tabs bar by dragging them with your cursor. To unpin a website tab, just drag the pinned tab to the right side of the tab bar and it will expand to become a normal tab again.

6. Kill Them All

safari

If you're done with all your other open tabs because you've found what you were looking for, then you can close all open tabs except the currently active one. Alternately, you can opt to close all open tabs to the right of the one you're currently viewing. Simply right-click the currently active tab and select Close Other Tabs or Close Tabs to the Right .

How to search through tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad

If you do a lot of browsing on the internet with Safari on your iOS device, there may come a time when you want to find a specific site or page that you have open. While you can easily scroll through your open tabs, if you’re looking for something in particular, it may take less time to simply search for it, especially if you have a bunch of tabs opened.

So, here’s how to search through tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad.

iPhone Searching Tabs in Safari

Access your Safari tabs

With Safari open on your iPhone or iPad, tap the Tabs button on the bottom right corner.

Safari Tab Button and Tabs iPhone

Now to search through your tabs, slide down on that tabs screen, and you’ll see a search box appear at the top. Type in your search word or phrase, and all tabs not containing it will disappear, leaving the one or more that apply.

You’ll notice as you begin typing that the results will start to narrow down immediately. So, in many cases, you won’t even have to type the complete word or phrase you’re looking for. When you see the site or page you want, tap it, and you’re set.

How to master Safari tabs in MacOS Monterey

Alex Blake

There are a lot of useful ways you can use and manage tabs in the Safari web browser on MacOS. With a few settings hidden in preference panes and right-click menus, you can make your web browser much more effective and efficient in day-to-day use.

Step 1: Change tab appearance

Step 2: create a new tab group, step 3: manage your tab groups.

  • Step 4: Get a bird’s eye view

Step 5: Move and reorder tabs

Step 6: reopen closed tabs and windows.

Things get interesting when you start using Safari’s Tab Groups , which were introduced with MacOS Monterey . These let you organize your tabs into related groups and then switch between them. For instance, you might have one group containing a few tabs for work, then a second group for news sites that you read during your lunch break. Switch from your news group to your work group, and all the news tabs are hidden. It’s like moving between two different Safari windows, but with less hassle. And even better, all your Tab Groups sync between your other Apple devices that are using the same Apple ID.

Of course, there is far more to Safari tabs than just Tab Groups and plenty more useful tips and tricks to learn along the way. We will cover these as well in this guide, helping you get much more from the humble web browser tab.

  • How to take a screenshot on a Mac
  • How to change the default apps on a Mac
  • Apple just announced the dates for WWDC 2024

By default, Safari keeps the URL bar above the row of tabs you have open. However, you can merge the two so that clicking the active tab lets you enter a new web address directly into the tab.

To do so, click Safari > Preferences in your Mac menu bar. In the Preferences pane, click Tabs , then click Compact next to Tab Layout .

Don’t forget to check the other settings while you’re there. You can change how tabs behave, including whether new pages open in tabs or windows and whether the focus switches to a new tab as soon as you open it.

In most browsers, all your tabs are grouped together into one long stream. In situations like that, it can be easy to lose track of the different things you were working on in different tabs. Safari does things a little differently with its Tab Groups feature, which lets you create named groups of tabs and switch between them with ease.

To create a Tab Group, click the sidebar button in the top-left corner, then click the New Tab G roup button on the right of the sidebar. Next, choose whether you want the Tab Group to comprise your currently open tabs or to create a new, blank group. Give it a name, and you’re done.

Alternatively, you can create a Tab Group by right-clicking on any tab and clicking Move to Tab Group > New Tab Group . Or open the sidebar, right-click the X Tabs button (where X is the number of tabs you have open), then click New Tab Group with X Tabs .

When you switch between Tab Groups, the tabs in your previous group will be replaced by those in the new group. Don’t worry, they still exist, they’re just hidden. To move between Tab Groups, click the downward arrow next to the name of the group in the top-left corner, then click the name of a different Tab Group. Or simply click a different Tab Group in the sidebar.

You can add a tab to an existing Tab Group at any time by right-clicking it and clicking Move to Tab Group , then clicking the name of the destination group. Alternatively, open the sidebar, then drag and drop a tab from the main window into your desired Tab Group.

To remove a tab from a Tab Group (but still keep it open), right-click it and click Move to Tab Group > X Tabs , where X is the number of tabs this group contains. This will put the tab in an unnamed group of tabs located at the top of the sidebar.

You can rename a Tab Group by double-clicking its name in the sidebar or by right-clicking it and selecting Rename . Note that this only works with groups you have created, not the X Tabs Group at the top of the sidebar. To remove a group entirely, right-click it and click Delete . This will close all tabs contained in the group.

Step 4: Get a bird’s eye view

If you use a lot of tabs at once, it can be hard to find the one you want because tabs shrink in size the more you have open. However, there’s a quick way to get a bird’s eye view of your tabs. Just press Shift + Command , click View > Show Tab Overview  or click the Tab Overview button in the top-right corner of the Safari window (it looks like four squares arranged into a larger square). This will show all your tabs as large tiles. Just click one to make it the active tab.

Additionally, you can add a new tab to a Tab Group using the overview feature. Open the overview, then click the large Plus tile, and a new tab will open. And if you need to find a specific tab, open the overview and start typing. You will notice the cursor is active in a Search Tabs box in the top-right, and results will appear as you type.

Reordering your tabs is as easy as clicking and dragging one to a new place in the tab bar. There is another, more ordered way to do it, though. Right-click any tab, then click Arrange Tabs By and choose either Title or Website . This will arrange the tabs alphabetically either by tab name (the website title that’s shown in the tab) or by the website address.

Accidentally closed a tab? Not to worry — you can instantly reopen it by pressing Command + Z . Keep pressing it to keep reopening other tabs.

If there’s a specific tab you want to reopen, click History in the menu bar to see recently visited websites. Or click History > Recently Closed for a long list of recently closed tabs. You can even reopen tabs from days prior by clicking History , then choosing a date from the bottom of the menu and picking a tab.

To reopen a closed window, just press Shift + Command + T , or click History > Reopen Last Closed Window .

Want a quick way to switch between tabs? Just press Command + Shift + Right Arrow or Command + Shift + Left Arrow to move along the row of tabs. Alternatively, use Command + 1 to Command + 9 to switch to the tab that corresponds to each number. Both are great  Mac keyboard shortcuts that will save you time.

And if you have several Tab Groups open when you close Safari, the likelihood is you will want them open again when you next launch your web browser. To ensure they load when Safari opens, click Safari > Preferences in the menu bar, then click the General tab. Under Safari Opens With , click All Windows From Last Session .

The MacBooks versus Windows laptops debate has been raging for decades, but never has it been this intense or important. New advances in chip technology are propelling even entry-level MacBooks to high-performance targets, and a shift in Windows laptops away from cheap plastics evens the playing field between these two platforms. Both Windows 11 and macOS are intuitive and clean operating systems. But where they differ comes down to one key element: their ecosystems.

What this means for you is that choosing an option from a list of the best laptops isn't so simple. The laptop you choose today can greatly influence which accessories you buy, which apps you use, and even what kind of phone you carry. Your entire workflow will depend on the platform you go with, from how you manage windows to which keyboard shortcuts work best. It's not a light decision. Build quality vs. variety The Dell XPS 14. Shortcuts gains powerful Find Tabs action for Safari, more in second public beta

Finally, a way to deal with all of those tabs you have open.

Iphone Safari Start Page Hero

On Thursday, Apple released iOS 16 public beta 2, which includes a set of new actions for the Shortcuts app that work with Safari, Mail, and Reminders. These actions include Find Tabs, Find Tab Groups, Find Bookmarks, Open Bookmarks, Find Reading Lists, Open Reading List Items, Search Mail, Open Mailbox, Open Smart List, Create Reminders List, and Search Reminders.

These 11 actions come in addition to the 46 actions added in the first public beta , bringing the total up to 67 new actions coming to iOS 16 .

Here’s a little more about what each of these new actions does.

Screenshot of the Shortcuts app showing the Safari tabs, Bookmarks, and Reading List actions.

The new actions for Safari in iOS 16 are extremely powerful, and perhaps the most significant actions that Shortcuts has gotten in some time.

For the first time, Shortcuts can interact with all of the open tabs in the Safari app using the Find Tabs action. This action pulls all of the currently open tabs in the active tab group and brings them into the Shortcuts app, letting users extract the title and URLs from each and use them in their workflows.

With an action like this, Shortcuts users can create flows to save all of their open tabs into notes for later from their favorite iPads , for example.

In the current implementation, the Find Tabs action is a bit confusing because it seems to be missing some filter options, like picking from a tab group. I expect Apple will update this action in future releases with more parameters.

Shortcuts also now has actions for Find Bookmarks and Open Bookmarks, as well as Find Reading Lists and Opening Reading List Items.

In the current beta, however, these actions also seem to be missing filter options that would make them more functional. Users can only retrieve all items or filter by title or URL, but these are missing options to filter by bookmark folder or by date, for example.

Also, for reference, Safari is receiving substantial updates for Shortcuts users in iOS 16, so these actions will all be great additions to the set of Safari actions added in the first public beta .

Screenshot of the Shortcuts app showing the new Mail actions

The Mail app received two new actions in the second public beta: Search Mail and Open Mailbox.

Search Mail enables Shortcuts users to fill out a query in the Shortcuts app and have it passed into the Mail search field, taking advantage of the much-improved search capabilities coming to Mail in iOS 16 .

Open Mailbox is also super useful because it enables users to jump directly to a specific inbox, section of a mailbox, or folder in the app. Users can make shortcuts to jump to places like their VIP or Flagged inboxes, a specific account folder, or places like Gmail tags that are synced over as folders when using Mail.

Screenshot of Shortcuts showing the new Reminders actions

The Reminders app also got new actions for Open Smart List, Search Reminders, and Create Reminders List.

The ability to open smart lists is great because it works with filters like the Today View or the All Reminders view. However, this action is missing the ability to open to your own smart lists, so you can't currently open to them to take advantage of any advanced tagging features. Like many of these actions, I expect this to get updated in future betas.

Reminders can also now accept a query, then filter the results based on what you searched for using Shortcuts. With Create List, you can also pre-program in a title for a new list in Reminders.

These reactions also build off of the set that became available in iOS 15, which added functionality like creating tags or adding them to Reminders.

Getting ready for a big iOS 16 release

The second public beta continues to pack in functionality to Shortcuts for the iOS 16 release. The expanded capabilities in Safari are extremely useful and very welcome, and the sets for Mail and Reminders round out the basic capabilities that should be available in each of those apps.

Currently, the new Books app actions that were present in the earlier developer betas are still not available in the public betas — perhaps we’ll see those in the next few releases. Plus, as I mentioned above, there are some areas in this current set of actions that appear incomplete or could use more functionality. Hopefully, we see those changes before iOS 16 launches.

Despite some flaws, it feels like Safari's deeper functionality is another signal for more powerful actions that could come to other apps as well. Adding the ability to Find Mail Messages would be extremely useful too, for example.

Stay tuned for more coverage of new actions in future releases of Shortcuts, and if you’re not on the beta train, check out our latest story on how to get started with Shortcuts for Apple Watch .

Want to Bookmark All Your Tabs in Safari at Once? Here's How You Can Do It

Follow these tips to instantly save all your open tabs to a bookmark folder in Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

The number of tabs you have open in Safari can get out of hand pretty quickly, especially when researching. You may want to control the clutter and close some tabs to stay organized, but doing so would result in you losing them. This is where Safari bookmarks come in.

You can bookmark each tab separately, but the task is quite tedious if you've got a lot of them. Instead, a brilliant feature allows you to bookmark all the open tabs in Safari at once. We'll show you how to do it on your iPhone or Mac below.

How to Bookmark All Your Open Safari Tabs on iPhone

Follow these steps to bookmark all your Safari tabs at once:

  • On any of your open tabs, tap and hold the Book icon at the bottom of Safari.
  • You will see three options: Add Bookmarks for X Tabs , Add Bookmark , and Add to Reading List . Tap on Add Bookmarks for X Tabs to save all your tabs.
  • After you hit Add Bookmarks for X Tabs , a new popup called New Folder will appear. This lets you change the name of the folder you're creating for all your new bookmarks. You can also choose the location of your bookmarks from Favorites and Bookmarks .
  • After you've made the changes, tap Save screen.

All your open tabs will save to the same folder you just created. If you want to access your bookmarked tabs later, tap the Book icon at the bottom of your screen again. From the three icons at the top of your screen showing Bookmarks , Reading List , and History , press the Book icon on the left side to open Bookmarks.

If you chose your location as Bookmarks , you will see your folder of saved tabs here. If you chose your location as Favorites , tap the Favorites folder, and you will see your folder here instead

Another cool feature along with saving multiple tabs when researching for projects is the Reader View on Safari .

How to Bookmark All Your Open Safari Tabs on Mac

Before you can save all your open Safari tabs on a Mac, make sure that Safari is updated.

Related: How to Update Safari on a Mac

When you've done that, here are the steps to bookmark all your open Safari tabs on a Mac:

  • From any of the open tabs, click the Bookmarks option in the menu bar.
  • You can select the save destination for your bookmarks from the following dropdown list, under Add this bookmarks folder to: and change the name for the new folder, too.

To re-open the tabs at a later date, just click the Bookmarks button again and select Show Favorites or Show Bookmarks , depending on where you saved your tabs.

You can also open the bookmarks by viewing the sidebar on your Safari window. Click the Show Sidebar icon at the top of your window and find your folder from the list shown. Control-click and press Open in New Tabs to open all your saved tabs at once.

Browsing in Safari Made Easier

With this handy feature, you can easily browse or research on Safari without it getting messy or disorganized. You can make easily accessible folders of all your tabs and refer back to them whenever you want to. It's like an effortless online portfolio.

All you have to do is open your Bookmarks and choose the option that allows you to bookmark all tabs. You can choose your name and location for your saved tabs.

How do I make Safari open search results in a new tab by default?

I'd like for results from the search toolbar to open in a new tab by default, like I've configured in Firefox. How can I get this same default behavior in Safari? I already know that Command-Enter will do this for me, but I want to change the default behavior so that I don't have to hold down Command every time I do a search.

Daniel Beck's user avatar

  • Not an answer, but I wonder how you get the cursor into the search field to start with. If you use your mouse or touchpad, then maybe the following makes your workflow a bit easier: Command-N for a new window, followed by Tab to get into the search field, and after typing your search text: Return to show the search results in that (new) window. –  Arjan Oct 28, 2010 at 19:40
  • @Arjan: Can be slow on some machines, because it might load the Top Sites for new windows. Cmd-L for Location bar, Tab, Search, Cmd-Enter is faster (at least on my machine and in my opinion). –  Daniel Beck ♦ Oct 28, 2010 at 19:45
  • @Arjan Glims can be configured to focus the search field for new windows and tabs. Saves a keystroke. –  Daniel Beck ♦ Oct 28, 2010 at 20:16
  • I don't think it's possible. I just checked Saft (well-known commercial Safari modification), Glims and the Safari Extensions library, nothing turned up. It seems you need to continue using Firefox for full customizability. –  Daniel Beck ♦ Oct 28, 2010 at 20:26
  • Wow, that's horrible. -1 to Safari. –  Jeff Oct 28, 2010 at 22:52

If you're in to some work, then Glims with a custom search provider, and some AppleScript to create your own protocol handler (URL scheme) can do the trick. But I think pressing Command-Return is much easier. ;-)

Here's what you'd need:

Open Applications, AppleScript Editor, and paste the following:

Select menu File, Save As, and be sure to select File Format: "Application". This will create something that looks like a single application, but actually holds a folder structure.

In Finder, find the place where you saved the application, right-click it and select "Show package contents".

Find file Contents/FileInfo.plist and open it with a text editor.

At the end, just above the last two lines </dict></plist> , add:

Move the whole application package into, for example, Application/Utilities (to ensure Launch Services registers it ).

Test in any browser, using newwindow://http://www.google.com/search?q=abc . If it doesn't work, then double-click the application or even rename the package, just to trigger the discovery by Launch Services again.

Install the Glims plugin for Safari.

In Safari's preferences, tab sheet Glims, Search Engine List, add a new entry. Note that Glims requires the slashes after newwindow: . Without that, Glims would prefix http:// to whatever text you entered:

I don't know how to change the icon that Glims shows... Also, when using this, there's no key you can hold down to not open the results in a new window.

  • ...and to open in a new Tab: set Safari to use tabs when a new window is opened. Did I mention that Command-Return is soooo much easier? ;-) –  Arjan Oct 31, 2010 at 22:10
  • Yikes! I think I'll stick with Command-Return for now. –  Jeff Nov 2, 2010 at 3:29
  • And generally I guess I'll use Chrome and Firefox instead of Safari. –  Jeff Nov 2, 2010 at 3:30
  • 1 Wow. This is... insane. Wow. Good job! –  Daniel Beck ♦ Nov 2, 2010 at 6:55

Here's what I found out so far:

  • It is not possible in vanilla Safari
  • It is not added in Saft (well-known commercial Safari modification)
  • It is not added in Glims .
  • There is no Safari extension for that and the Safari API does not support this for an extension.

Therefore, I don't think it's possible. It seems you need to continue using Firefox for full customizability.

  • Hmmm, now the homepage shows this question has an answer... –  Arjan Oct 28, 2010 at 20:08
  • @Arjan what do you mean? –  Daniel Beck ♦ Oct 28, 2010 at 20:11
  • I mean this does not answer the question. But now this question no longer has zero answers, and hence might not trigger others to read it? –  Arjan Oct 28, 2010 at 20:17

Jeff wrote:

...I wonder how you get the cursor into the search field to start with...

You can do that with Command-k just as you would with Firefox. Just go into Apple -> Preferences -> Keyboard and add a new keyboard shortcut for Safari.

Decavolt's user avatar

  • Jeff didn't write that, Arjan did. Furthermore, Command-Option-F is the shortcut to directly focus the search bar. –  NReilingh Apr 3, 2011 at 18:10

Be default, here is how I do it:

  • With Safari open, press CMD + OPTION + F (puts cursor in search field)
  • enter my search term
  • press CMD + ENTER (opens results in a new tab)
  • Done, search results open in a new tab in 4 seconds or less

That said, I have updated CMD + OPTION + F to be CMD + K to match Firefox (and I think Chrome?)… but I would prefer that there was a checkbox in Safari Preferences on the "Tabs" tab to make search results open in a new tab.

How to Group Tabs in Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox

Quick links, how to group tabs in google chrome, how to group tabs in edge, how to group tabs in firefox, how to group tabs in safari.

  • Group tabs in Chrome by right-clicking any tab, selecting Add tab to new group , and naming/color-coding it for easy management.
  • Edge allows tab grouping by right-clicking a tab or using the Tab actions menu for suggested groups.
  • Firefox lacks built-in tab grouping, but the Simple Tab Groups add-on helps create, hide, and manage tab groups efficiently.
  • Safari keeps it simple with a dropdown menu, followed by creating a new group.

If you're a tab hoarder, tab groups are the best way to organize your browsing experience, so it's time to learn how to group tabs in the most popular browsers: Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox.

Grouping tabs in Google Chrome is quite easy. To do so, right-click on any tab you want to add to a tab group. Select Add tab to new group and then name and color code your tab group. This helps you manage tab groups when you have multiple groups open.

To add more tabs to an existing group, drag and drop them near the tab group. Alternatively, right-click the tab you want to add to the group, click on Add tab to group , hover your mouse over it, and select the tab group where you want to add it.

If you use the same set of tabs frequently (perhaps for work), you can save the tab group in Chrome by right-clicking the tab group name in the tab bar and turning Save group on. Essentially, it is a bookmark of different tabs that you can access with a single click, and the saved tab group appears on your bookmark bar.

Like Chrome, Edge also lets you group tabs by right-clicking any tab and selecting Add tab to new group . In the same way, you can drag and drop tabs (once you've created a group) to add or remove them from the group.

However, Edge also offers another simpler way to group tabs. Click on the Tab actions menu icon (in the top-left corner) and select Organize Tabs . Edge then shows suggested tab groups, giving each of them a suitable name. If you need to change the tab groups, you can drag them into/out of the group. Then, click Group tabs , and voilà, your tabs are organized.

If you can't see the Tab actions menu, go to edge://settings/appearance, scroll down to Customize Toolbar, and turn on the Show tab actions menu .

Unfortunately, Firefox does not have a built-in feature for grouping tabs, so you'll have to resort to add-ons to manage multiple tabs in Firefox . Though there are several add-ons you can try, Simple Tab Groups is quite a popular and handy one.

Download: Simple Tab Groups for Firefox (Free)

Once you've downloaded the add-on, right-click any tab, select Move tab to the group , and then Create new group . Name the tab group and move all related tabs to the group.

Simple Tab Groups hides the grouped tabs from your window to declutter the screen. To access tab groups, click the extension icon and select Simple Tab Groups . From here, you can create new tab groups or click any existing tab group to open it. Right-clicking the group name shows more options, like discarding, exporting, or opening tabs in a new window.

You can also create a new group by clicking the extension icon , selecting Simple Tab Groups , and choosing Create new group .

Pin the extension to the toolbar to open tab groups quickly.

To create a tab group in Safari , follow these steps.

  • Click the down icon (next to the sidebar icon) and select New Empty Tab Group if you don't want to add any tab to the group for now.
  • If you already have tabs open, you can select New Tab Group with X Tabs to add all the open tabs to the newly-created group.
  • Once you've created a tab group, Safari lets you rename it to your liking.
  • You can also access the option to create a tab group by clicking on File .

Once you've organized all the tabs into groups, click the down arrow (beside the sidebar icon) to see all the different tab groups and select the one you want to open.

Kuznetski Most area in Moscow

Kuznetski Most is a small area between Tverskaya street, Kremlin, and Kitai Gorod (Lubyanka) and it's a downtown of Moscow. First of all, 'Kuznya' is a great place to walk: it is a real Moscow area, not a postcard at all, hectic busy streets neighbour tranquil lanes and courtyards with traditional architecture. There are also many very nice cafes, restaurants, clubs, and shops. If you want a cool place to meet people, go for a walk and to get the real feeling of the city, check out this area.

Kuznetsky Most area - photo by Sergey Rodovichenkov @FlickR

Long time ago there were only half-broken low wooden houses in Kuznetski Most area, and it was the place where poor blacksmithes lived. Blacksmith is 'Kuznets' in Russia, hence the name. In the beginning of the street (on top) there was a bridge over a small river, later this river was put underground, so there's no bridge anymore. About 200 years ago there was a rich Moscovitan noble buying this area. He immediately put away all the blacksmiths' houses and started to build a fancy new district. Just in few years he built up beautiful houses, with impressive ornaments, rich decoration, pools in the courtyards. Also, he opened some French boutiques in the area. That's when Kuznetski Most started to become fashionable. In a short time all the elite moved to this  area, and those who wasn't so fast were coming here to make some shopping and to sit in many of the restaurants and cafes around.  In the 20th century, when the communist times arrived, most of the buildings were given to government offices, some were given to soviet shops. The area became boring, the architecture was slowly deteriorating , but nobody seemed to care. In the beginning of the 90s  the area was revived again: the buildings were  restored , there was many new cafes being opened, boutiques, and shops. One important landmark of Kuznetsky Most is that it's home to FSB (Federal Security Bureau - former KGB) offices, and if you walk along Kuznetsky Most street you can get to the FSB reception, which is open 24 hours (in case you have something to report).
