Safari Rally Kenya 2024: Entry List + Itinerary

A total of 29 crews will be taking on 229 competitive miles of action in Kenya

After a six-week break, the World Rally Championship finally returns for round three of its global adventure, as the series embarks on its first gravel rally of the year on Safari Rally Kenya.

What was already one of the toughest events on the calendar has been made even more challenging by the return of the Safari to its traditional spring calendar slot. That puts it right into Kenya’s heaviest rainy season, and could be the catalyst for plenty of drama on the stages this weekend.

Safari Rally Kenya promises an Easter weekend of epic entertainment, and here’s everything you need to know.

Rally Safari Kenya Entry List

Total 29 crews 9 Rally1 crews 14 Rally2 crews (13 WRC2) 1 Rally3 crew (1 WRC3) 5 Group N crews

Jourdan Serderidis increases M-Sport's lineup to three cars in Kenya

The top class field remains at nine cars for the second consecutive rally, but there’s one new face in the field compared to last time out in Sweden.

That face belongs to Greek privateer Jourdan Serderidis, who has reversed his decision to retire from the WRC’s top level after last year’s Acropolis Rally Greece and returns to the seat of an M-Sport Ford Puma this weekend.

He’ll join M-Sport regulars Adrien Fourmaux, fresh from his first WRC podium in Sweden, and Grégoire Munster in the Cumbrian squad’s three-car line-up.

After winning the opening two WRC events of 2024, Hyundai enters an identical line-up to the last event in Sweden, with points-leader Thierry Neuville and 2019 world champion Ott Tänak again joined by Esapekka Lappi, who’ll be on the hunt for back-to-back WRC victories.

Defending manufacturers’ champions Toyota will also field an unchanged squad, with reigning WRC champion Kalle Rovanperä making his second start of the year, alongside full-season duo Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta.

Kajetan Kajetanowicz has won the last two editions of Safari Rally Kenya in WRC2 and starts his 2024 season here

Five brands are represented across the 14 Rally2 crews in Kenya, in what should be a hotly contested battle for supremacy.

Rally Sweden WRC2 winner and joint-series points leader Oliver Solberg returns to Kenya in his Toksport Škoda Fabia RS, but this time will score WRC2 points, as will his team-mate Gus Greensmith, who will make his first start of the season on the Safari.

Defending Keyna class-winner Kajetan Kajetanowicz also makes his first start of the year in the latest generation Fabia, as does compatriot Daniel Chwist.

Frenchman and Hyundai customer Nicolas Ciamin heads the South Korean brand’s charge in Kenya, while Charles Munster, brother of Rally1 driver Grégoire, makes his WRC2 debut behind the wheel of another i20 N Rally2.

Junior WRC regular Diego Domínguez Jr. joins the WRC2 field in the sole Citroën C3 entered, while a host of African rallying stars will test themselves against the WRC2 regulars, including Kenya’s Carl Tundo in his Ford Fiesta R5, and Tanzania’s Yasin Nasser, who makes his WRC debut behind the wheel of a Fiesta Rally2.

Hamza Anwar was a regular competitor in the Junior WRC last year

Last year’s Junior African Rally champion Hamza Anwar is the sole WRC3 entrant, and the Kenyan will start his home WRC event for the fourth consecutive year driving a Ford Fiesta Rally3.

Safari Rally Kenya Itinerary

This year’s Safari Rally Kenya will cover 229 competitive miles (368 km), the longest edition since it returned to the WRC calendar in 2021.

The first of the rally’s 19 stages takes place on Thursday afternoon, with the Kasarani superspecial pitting drivers against each other across the jumps and bumps of this epic opening test just outside Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi.

Friday is the event’s first full day and will take the crews away from the service park to the rough roads around Lake Naivasha. The morning loop consists of three stages totaling 40 miles (64 km), repeated in the afternoon following a lunchtime service.

Saturday is the rally’s longest day, featuring six stages including the mammoth 22-mile (36 km) Sleeping Warrior test. After 100 miles (161 km) of grueling Saturday action, the first points of the weekend will be provisionally awarded.

Super Sunday comprises 46 miles (74 km) of action across six stages on the roads around Lake Elmenteita, with only a short 15-minute service to work on the cars after the third test of the day, Hell’s Gate. The rally concludes with the second running of the 7-mile (11 km) Hell’s Gate stage, which serves as the powerstage.

WRC - Africa awaits as the competition goes on Safari in Kenya

2024 FIA World Rally Championship - Safari Rally Kenya (round 3/13)

  • World Rally Championship
  • SEASON 2024
  • Safari Rally Kenya

The diverse and spectacular nature of the FIA World Rally Championship will be highlighted to the full in Africa next week (March 27-31) with the 72nd Safari Rally Kenya marking the third event of an increasingly exciting WRC season.

Just three points separate the top two drivers, Thierry Neuville and Elfyn Evans, in the provisional standings, while the lead of the FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers is shared by Hyundai and Toyota. M-Sport Ford has taken a podium finish in 2024 to underline the strong competition among the Rally1 contenders in the FIA WRC. Since its eagerly anticipated return to the FIA WRC calendar in 2021, Safari Rally Kenya has run in June. However, it’s back in its traditional Easter weekend slot for 2024 and is therefore the first gravel-based round of the year.  It also coincides with Kenya’s rainy season, which means the threat of downpours is ever present. For an event ranked as one of the most challenging on the calendar, that prospect only adds to the task in store for the FIA WRC drivers and their teams as they negotiate the stunning East African terrain.

THE ROUTE IN SHORT The FIA World Rally Championship stars and their cars will be challenged on 19 stages over a timed distance of 367.76 kilometres, a route that’s largely unchanged from 2023.  Following the event-opening Super Special Kasarani in out-of-town Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, on Thursday March 28, the rally relocates to Lake Naivasha, its hub for the remaining three days of competition.  Friday’s first full leg consists of three stages run either side of the Naivasha service halt. Kedong, SS4/SS7, features a new section in the Miti Mbili area and is run in a reverse direction compared to 2023.  Saturday’s action is based around Lake Elmenteita north of Naivasha. The three repeated stages include Sleeping Warrior, now up to 36.08 kilometres from 31.04 and the longest of the rally after a new closing section of some seven kilometres was added.  Sunday’s deciding leg begins with Malewa, which has been reduced from 9.00 kilometres in length to 8.33. The Oserengoni stage, titled Oserian last season, gets its name from the wildlife conservancy estate where it’s located. The 10.53-kilometre Hell’s Gate tests hosts the Wolf Power Stage from 14:15.

Unforgettable experience

Some of the drivers were treated to an unforgettable experience on Monday at the Maasai Mara National Reserve by the Kenyan tourism ministry.

According to Gregoire Munster, he had a wonderful time at one of the world’s most famous tourist destination.

“It was quite an experience. Seeing the Maasai dancing for us and welcoming us was really nice,” he commented.

On his part, Neuville revealed that he had a chance to see some of the big five animals at Masai Mara.

“Some Lions and Elephants. Basically, what you don’t get to see in Naivasha. So, it was something I was missing over the past few years. I mean there are a lot of Zebras and Giraffes and so on, but there are very little elephants and lions. So, it was nice to see them,” he observed.

Stages and dates

This year’s Safari Rally edition will have seven stages with the Hells Gate National Park being the focal point.

Stage one is Loldia, where the shakedown will take place on Wednesday, March 27. Shakedown refers to the process of sampling the status of the road and testing the car before the start of the main event.

After the shakedown, stakeholders will head to Nairobi on Thursday, March 28 for stage two, which is the official flagging off of the rally.

President William Ruto is expected to grace the ceremony that will take place at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC).

In addition, stage three also known as the super special stage will go down on the same day in Kasarani, before the drivers head to Nakuru County for stage four.

Drivers will race in the Loldia, Geothermal and Kedong routes twice on Friday, March 29 before they head to Soysambu on Saturday, March 30 for the fifth stage.

WRC Safari Rally 2024: Everything You Need To Know

Are you ready for high-adrenaline action? Brace yourselves for the ultimate showcase of passion, precision, and power. Here is everything you need to know about the WRC Safari Rally 2024. The Safari Rally was first held in 1953 as the East African Coronation Safari in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika as a celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1960, it was renamed the East African Safari Rally and kept that name until 1974, when it became the Kenya Safari Rally. It then evolved into the current modern-day World Rally Championship ( WRC). Safari Rally is currently the most popular event on the WRC calendar, alongside the 1,000 Lakes of Finland and Monte Carlo.

Safari Rally Kenya Winners

The late Kenyan rally ace Shekhar Mehta and fellow Kenyan Carl Tundo are the event’s most successful drivers, with five victories each. Mehta emerged victorious in the first event of the WRC calendar at the Safari Rally in 1973. He went on to win four more times, from 1979 to 1982. Tundo, on the other hand, has won the rally five times, but all his victories came from editions held outside of the WRC schedule. These events were held in 2004, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2018.

During its run as a WRC event from 1973–2002, the 1979 world champion Bjorn Waldegard and four-time world title winner Juha Kankkunen scored four wins. The Safari Rally was the scene of Colin McRae’s final WRC win in 2002. It was the 1995 world champion’s third Safari Rally triumph, alongside wins for Subaru in 1997 and Ford in 1999 and 2002.

World champions Miki Biasion, Tommi Makinen, and Richard Burns have all won the rally twice. Toyota has dominated the rally since returning to the FIA World Rally Championship in 2021, and the Safari has resumed its reputation as one of motorsport’s toughest challenges. It’s a challenge that TGR-WRT has risen to with three consecutive victories, extending Toyota’s record tally of wins at the event to 11. That includes a historic pair of 1-2-3-4 results in the past two years (2022 and 2023).

Sebastien Ogier won the WRC Safari Rally in 2021 and 2023, while Kalle Rovanpera won in 2022.

WRC Safari Rally 2024

For 2024, the Safari returns to a more traditional date earlier in the year, having been held in June since its WRC comeback. This move could coincide with greater rainfall, potentially turning usually dry and dusty tracks into deep mud—conditions that have previously been responsible for some of the most iconic images in WRC history.

The 2024 WRC Safari Rally will be held from Thursday, March 28th, to Sunday, March 31st, 2024, in Nairobi County , and Naivasha ( Nakuru County ). The rally will kick off with a flag-off at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park on Thursday, March 28th, 2024; crews will head to the Kasarani Grounds for the Super Special Stage.

The Safari Rally is usually characterised by closed dirt roads, picturesque scenery, exotic wildlife, rocky and rutted tracks, and unpredictable weather that frequently turns dusty roads into slippery and tricky mud baths. Kenya’s Safari Rally has always been a challenge for drivers of all categories because it is unpredictable, longer, and filled with pitfalls, adding to the adventure for spectators.

Rally1 Contenders

This year, the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally team brings another strong line-up featuring three drivers who each have multiple Safari podiums to their name. Double world champion Kalle Rovanperä won the event in 2022 and finished a close second last year, while Elfyn Evans has the chance to add his name to the winners’ list after finishing second and third in the last two editions. Kenya has been a happy hunting ground for Takamoto Katsuta too, as the rally where he achieved his first two WRC podium finishes in 2021 and 2022.

Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team: Provisional championship leader Thierry Neuville heads Hyundai’s bid for the first Safari Rally Kenya victory. He’s joined by Ott Tänak, the 2019 world champion, and Esapekka Lappi , the winner of Rally Sweden last month.

Gus Greensmith , the 2023 FIA WRC runner-up, makes his first world championship appearance of the season in Kenya in a Toksport WRT-entered Škoda Fabia RS, as does Daniel Chwist (Škoda Fabia RS) , whose grandfather, Sobiesław Zasada , won the FIA ERC title three times and made his last Safari Rally Kenya appearance in 2021, aged 91.

Diego Domínguez , second in the 2023 FIA Junior Championship, steps up to the FIA WRC2 level for the first time in a Citroën C3, while Charles Munster (Hyundai i20 N) is Rally1 driver Grégoire Munster’s younger brother.

In the WRC3 category , Kenya’s Jeremiah Wahome, and McRae Kimathi will be out of the rally, leaving only Hamza Anwar to keep the victory at home. Safaricom and Kenya Airways sponsor the FIA Rally Star Driver. Hamza Anwar will be driving the Rally 3 Ford Fiesta.

The 2024 WRC Safari Rally is sponsored by KCB, Kenya Airways, Safaricom and CFAO Motors (formerly Toyota Kenya).

WRC Rally Kenya

The FIA World Rally Championship stars and their cars will be challenged on 19 stages over a timed distance of 367.76 kilometres, a route that’s largely unchanged from 2023. (Modifications to the route will make this the longest Safari Rally of the modern WRC era, with 367.76 competitive kilometres.)

Following the event-opening Super Special Kasarani in out-of-town Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, on Thursday, March 28, the rally relocates to Lake Naivasha, its hub for the remaining three days of competition. Friday’s first full leg consists of three stages run on either side of the Naivasha service halt. Kedong, SS4/SS7, features a new section in the Miti Mbili area and is run in a reverse direction compared to 2023.

Saturday’s action is based around Lake Elmenteita, north of Naivasha. The three repeated stages include Sleeping Warrior, now up to 36.08 kilometres from 31.04 and the longest of the rally after a new closing section of some seven kilometres was added.

Sunday’s deciding leg begins with Malewa, which has been reduced from 9.00 kilometres in length to 8.33 kilometres. The Oserengoni stage, titled Oserian last season, gets its name from the wildlife conservancy estate where it’s located. The 10.53-kilometre Hell’s Gate tests host the Wolf Power Stage from 14:15 hours.

WRC Safari Rally 2024 Accommodation

Those who would like to be staying there for the whole period that the rally is meant to happen should have booked their accommodation by now. Naivasha is a beautiful space and you have many places to choose from but ensure your location is at least accessible to where the rally is happening or the routes the rally drivers will be using. This is because almost the whole country will be there and traffic is usually wild so ensure you don’t get to the venue when the rally is almost over if you intend to watch it. Accommodation options;

2. List Of Best Airbnb Vacation Rentals In Nakuru

3. List Of Best Camping Sites In Naivasha

Carry plenty of water, hydrate, and don’t forget to pack as little clothing as possible because the weather can get quite hot at times. If your goal is simply to get out of town, make sure you have a travel itinerary and activities planned for while you’re there. You can take a boat ride on Lake Naivasha , visit Hells Gate , hike to the Menengai crater, or simply relax at one of the resorts along the Naivasha-Nakuru-Nairobi route.

Avoid drinking and driving; your safety comes first. Always make sure that everyone in your car is sober before getting behind the wheel.

Here’s an FAQ about the Safari Rally in 2024

1. Why is the Safari Rally the hardest?

Drivers often look forward to competing on the expansive roads in Naivasha due to their unpredictable nature. The dusty roads could easily turn muddy and impassable in the event of rainfall, which is always a possibility. Fesh fesh is a term you will probably hear a lot from motorsports enthusiasts. It refers to the fine dust on the roads that looks like solid ground. On rocky terrain, it is extremely slippery, and it usually sticks to the engines of the cars, thereby causing major performance issues. It also lingers in the air, which causes major visibility issues for drivers. Teams often struggle to deal with it. In 2022 and 2023, Toyota did the unthinkable by sweeping all the podium places.

I’m amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s both educative and interesting, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is something which too few folks are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.

Thank you. Feel much welcomed

Safari Rally Route 2024

Safari Rally Kenya

28 - 31 March 2024

Https://safarirally.co.ke, safari rally stage maps.

The legendary Safari Rally Kenya , the most famous rally in the world, returned to the WRC in 2022 for the first time in 20 years.  The tough rocky roads are back in June for the 2024 edition of the Safari Rally route 2024. Many of the same stages are being used again providing the spectacular scenery the rally is known for.

Fourmaux Safari Rally 2022

The Safari Rally Route 2024  is a very different beast from when it was run in 2002.  Run on open roads, each crew was required to have a dedicated helicopter to fly ahead and warn of any obstacles such as wildlife and incredibly other road users.

The Safari Rally was an endurance event with individual stages over 100 km and an overall rally length of over 1000 km. The gaps between the cars by the end of the rally were usually measurable in minutes rather than seconds or even 10ths of seconds as it is now.  The last time the rally was run in the World Rally Championship in 2002 was won by the one and only Colin McRae with Nicky Grist on the notes in the Ford Focus RS WRC 02.

Today the Safari Rally Route 2024 has been updated to fit the modern World Rally Championship format. However, it shares the same character of demanding dirt roads and epic scenery.

The Safari Rally Route 2024  is virtually identical to the 2022 and 2023 safari rallies , apart from a few fairly minor adjustments to some stages the only real difference is the replacement of the Osari stage with the Oserengoni stage. Though, these tweaks to the format bring the competitive percentage down slightly, from 30% last year to 26% in this years 2024 safari rally. All the stages are located to the North West of Nairobi with the exception of the Kasarani stage in Nairobi itself.

INSPIRATION

A guide to the wrc safari rally 2023.

Comprehensive guide to WRC Safari Rally 2023. Explore rally routes, event details, schedules, and highlights for motorsport enthusiasts.

The highly anticipated motorsport event of the year is back! The WRC Safari Rally buzz can be felt across various cities as seasoned fans and newbies alike prepare to head to Naivasha. Possibly one of Kenya’s grandest events within the past decade, it evokes both nostalgia and a rekindled love for the sport. For all our Nomads heading for the Safari rally next weekend, here’s everything you need to know for a seamless experience!

1. Dodge the Traffic

As huge numbers make the journey to Naivasha, the roads often become notoriously packed. To avoid getting stuck in traffic for hours on end, we recommend setting out a few hours earlier than you’ve planned for if possible.

Dodge the Traffic

2. Get Familiar with the Itinerary

The entire rally consists of 19 stages covering over 360km. Thursday lunchtime’s traditional Safari starts in the heart of Nairobi followed by a side-by-side super special in the afternoon at Kasarani, north-east of the city centre. At Kasarani, 2 cars will be racing at a time from 14:05 Hrs, which will then see the cars head back to Naivasha and the first overnight Parc Fermé. (Parc fermé, meaning “closed park” in French, is a secure area at a motor racing circuit wherein the cars are driven back to the pits post- and sometimes pre-race.)

Friday’s opening leg visits the northern and southern shores of Lake Naivasha through the forested Loldia. It is followed by KWS Narasha Gate – the stage quickly climbs into the Geothermal fields of the Ol Karia Geothermal projects. Lastly, the route ventures into Kedong, the longest stage of the rally and a favourite passage of rally fans.

Get Familiar with the Itinerary

Saturday takes us through Soysambu, through the familiar Soysambu Conservancy which will have a 3km Spectator area at the start. It is followed by Elementaita’s often used tracks in the Delamere Estate. With the naturally beautiful Lake Elementaita as a unique backdrop, this will serve as the day’s Live TV Stage. Finally we have Sleeping Warrior, set in the shadow of a hill that resembles a Maasai warrior lying down.

Sunday’s finale returns south of Lake Naivasha

Sunday’s finale returns south of Lake Naivasha, with the short, sharp Malewa Stage having been brought back. Next will be Oserian which lies in the Oserengoni Wildlife Conservancy Estate; home to lions, leopards, giraffes, antelope and buffalo. It is followed by Hell’s Gate, which is arguably the most scenic backdrop of any of the Power Stages on the World Rally Championship.

3. Things to Carry

A mask and a pair of sunglasses are definitely handy to have to make the clouds of dust a little more bearable. We also recommend having some cash and a powerbank as network and power issues are a reality in the bush. It helps to be prepared in case of anything for a smooth and easy experience.

4. Mind the Weather

The area is typically very hot during the day with chilly nights, so definitely consider that as you pack. Have some sun hats, sunscreen and warm clothes and throws on hand for the night.

Mind the Weather

With that said, we’re wishing all rally fans safe travels and a fantastic experience of the WRC Safari Rally!
