Rajasthani Music And Dance

Traditional Rajasthani Dance

The desert land of Rajasthan comes alive when professional artists take the center stage. They leave the spectators spell bound with their mesmerizing Dance and Music performances. No celebration is complete without swaying to the rhythms of the folk music. Be it the advent of monsoon or the festivals and fairs of the state, Rajasthan has a dance for every occasion. The women sing melodious songs while carrying out their household chores.

Rajasthan is famous for its special entertainment communities whose profession is to entertain people with their dance and music performances depicting stories of romance and chivalry. They keep shuttling from place to place to flaunt their talent. The Rajput families would invite these entertainment communities to perform at their celebrations. The erstwhile Maharajas were patrons of dance and music and hence their kingdoms had great artists. Maharajas used to support the entertainers in every way.

Some of the Famous dance forms of Rajasthan are:

Ghoomar: It is the most popular dance of the state. The tourists admire it very much. The women flaunt their skills of taking rounds at a very high speed while the music is being played. Their Ghagras (long skirts) spread out while dancing. They simply look graceful. It involves a lot of energy and enthusiasm. And the astonishing thing is that the faces of these women performers remain covered by the veil while performing. According to the tradition of Rajasthan the new bride is expected to perform Ghoomar dance when she comes to her husband's place for the first time.

Fire Dance: As the name suggests this dance form involves the use of fire as a prop in the dance. A large bed of flaming coals is set for the performer to walk on coals. And the astonishing thing is that the performers do no get any blisters on their feet after the performance. May be they are blessed with God's grace! Actually it is because of the swift movements of the dance.

Drum Dance: This dance is performed by people belonging to the Martial race. The dancer holds a naked sword in his mouth and juggles three other swords with his hands without causing any injury to himself. This awe inspiring performance is coupled with the beat of drums.

Kachhi Ghodi: This is an interesting dance performance packed with laughter . It is performed in a bridegroom's party. The performers decorate themselves in special costumes and it seems as if they are riding dummy horses. The dance touches the theme of chivalry.

Kathak: It is a pure classical form of dance.

Kathputli (puppet) Dance: The puppet dance of Rajasthan is famous all over the world. This dance form is high on entertainment quotient. The puppets are strung on the stage and the tales steeped in the royal history are told through dance.

Chari: The women performers dance while balancing 7-8 brass pots on their head.

Sapera Dance: This dance form is performed by the Snake charmers. A great deal of expertise is involved in it. They wear long black ghagras (long skirts) embellished with silver ribbons. They spin in circles at a very high speed as of they are made of rubber and not flesh.

Bhavai: This dance involves flipping of earthen pots on the beats of the musical instruments. The musical instruments used in this dance form are Ravanhatha (a stringed instrument), the Morchang (a Jewish harp), the Bankia (trumpet) and the Algoza (twin flutes).

Raas Dance: This dance form is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Holding sheer philosophical meaning, the dance depicts scenes from the life of the divine.

Gangaur Dance: This dance is performed during the celebration of the famous Gangaur festival when womenfolk worship goddess Gauri for long life of their husbands. They perform while balancing a pot filled with green leaves, flowers and grass on their heads.

The music of Rajasthan touches several themes like love, war and devotion. The musicians can be broadly categorized into two traditional classes: the Langas targeting the Muslim audiences and the Manganiars who do not have any particular target audience.

Some of the musical instruments used in the Rajasthani music are the Morchang, Naad, Sarangi, Kamayacha, Rawanhattha, Algoza, Khartal, Poongi, Bankia, and Daf . The list is endless as each region has its own special instruments.

There are a wide range of instruments that form a musician's repertoire in the country-side. Dances of Rajasthan with the women performers in their swirling skirts and male performers in their colourful turbans & costumes, are an absolutely spellbinding sight. The mesmerizing melody and beats will get you also foot taping in absolutely no time at all.

Sarangi is a string instrument; Shehnai is the very well known wind instrument, it is used in India during weddings and other joyous occasions; Manjeera has a cymbal like sound; Khartal and Dhol are beat instruments that provide the thump. The folk songs narrate the rich royal history and stories of the valiant warriors of this land, as well as describe the beauty of the desert. There are ballads that sing of stories from Mahabharata and Ramayana, apart from singing in the praise of various saints.

Most of the communities that perform the music and dance of Rajasthan are Wandering Minstrels and live in the rural areas. Some of these communities are Dholies , subdivided into Mirasis, Dhadhies, Manganiyarv and Langas as each has a distinct style; Jogis , known for recitation of the ballad Nihalde Sultan, Shivji-ka-byawala and songs about Gopi Chand and Bhartrihari; and Chipas or Joshis who are famous phad painters. Phad is an elaborately painted work of art; the stories told in Phad also find their way into the music of Rajasthan.

The royals elevated the musicians, giving them the title of Kalawants. The Kalawants have created Maand , a sophisticated style of singing. Chairawi, Kuchamani Khyals and Maach of Chittaurgarh, Tamayha of Jaipur and Rammat of Bikaner are all forms of folk opera.

Ghoomar is a dance performed by the women of Rajasthan. Traditionally, the dance is performed by the women of a family, only before their own family members. Gair, Sapera (with snake like movements) and Bhavai are the other dance forms. In Bhavai, veiled women dancers perform with brass pitchers over their head while standing gracefully on the edge of glass or open sword. In another dance form, Fire dancers dance on a bed of flaming coals.

Personal adornment goes as a part of the territory with performing arts. It is de rigueur for women to wear heavily embroidered long flowing skirt with a multi-coloured dupatta and beautiful necklace and bangles. Men wear frilled and embroidered kurtas or jackets and may also wear royal sherwanis in Rajasthan festivals.

Watching at least one performance of Rajasthan music and dance is a must for people visiting this State, to get the real experience of Rajasthan.

Govt. committed to tourism development in Telangana: Bhatti

rajasthan tourism music

Khammam: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu has declared that significant development of tourism will be visible within one year under Indiramma Rajyam.

Addressing a media conference after visiting the Khammam Fort in Khammam the district headquarters on Monday, he said that they would allocate any amount of funds for development of tourism sector and wide publicity would be given to Telangana tourism and make a place for it in the world tourism map.

Bhatti appreciated the decision of Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao to visit tourist places of a district. He toured along with MLAs and Ministers of the district concerned. As part of this decision, Jupally already completed his programme in Mahbubnagar and started his Khammam tour.

It was a good suggestion from the Tourism Minister that MLAs and Ministers of the district concerned should visit and stay in tourist places along with their families. Noting that there are ample opportunities for development of eco tourism and temple tourism in Khammam district, the Deputy Chief Minister said the forests from Kunnerasani to Bhadrachalam were ideal for eco tourism.

Similarly, temple tourism opportunities were aplenty from Buddhist monument in Nelakondapalli to Sitarama Swamy temple in Bhadrachalam via Jamalapuram. The ropeway proposal to fort in Khammam district headquarters has been pending for long and the Minister Jupally signed the file giving approvals for rope way construction.

Funds would be released to start work and it would be completed in a few months. Bhatti said Buddhists from countries like Japan be invited to Nelakondapalli Buddhist monuments to promote and publicise places of tourism in the State. As a result, tourist footfall from across the world would increase generating revenue to local areas and pave way for employment to youth.

According to Bhatti, Hyderabad is hub for software sector and facilities for trekking, walking tracks, resorts and internet facilities be provided in the forest areas to enable IT sector employees to spend relaxed time during week-ends or once a month.

If all facilities like high speed internet are provided, the IT sector employees could relax as well as work from here if required. Speaking at the Nelakondapalli Buddhist monument, Bhatti suggested that on important Buddhist festivals, celebrations should be organised in Nelakondapalli.

The government has already sanctioned Rs 10 crore for promotion of Buddhist tourism sites and works should be started soon. Kondapalli Aramam has not lost its prominence and it should be protected while also opening old ‘Aramams’ to tourists. Measures should be taken to provide adequate facilities and security to tourists, he added.
