Lala-Parijan Sanctuary or the Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary is one of the most beautiful Kutch tourist places known for the conservation and preservation of India’s heaviest flying bird- Bustards. Marine National Park is the first marine reserve of India, located on the southern coast of Kutch in Jamnagar district. The marine park features saline grasslands, swampy tracts, and marshy shores, along with rocky outcrops, estuaries, and mud beds.

14. Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary 

Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is another one of the popular places to visit in Rann of Kutch region for wildlife lovers. Spread over 2797.7 sq miles, this biosphere reserve has rare as well as almost extinct wild animals like chinkara, jackals, wild boar, porcupine, desert fox, and spiny-tailed lizards.

15. Narayan Sarovar

How to Visit Great Rann of Kutch: Essential Travel Guide

The Rann of Kutch, also known as the Great Rann of Kutch (there's a  Little Rann of Kutch  as well), is a remarkable place to visit in Gujarat. Much of it consists of one of the world's largest salt desert, measuring about 10,000 square kilometers (3,800 square miles). What makes it even more amazing is that the salt desert is underwater during the main  monsoon season in India . For the remaining eight months of the year, it's an enormous stretch of packed white salt. Here's all the information you need to visit it.

The vast and arid expanse that is the Great Rann of Kutch lies to the north of the Tropic of Cancer (you'll pass through it and see the sign), at the top of the Kutch district. The northern boundary forms the border between India and Pakistan.

The Great Rann is best approached via  Bhuj.  Dhordo, approximately an hour and a half north of Bhuj, is being developed by the Gujarat government as the Gateway to the Rann. Dhordo is on the edge of the salt desert.

The Rann begins to dry up in October every year, steadily transforming into the desolate and surreal salt desert. The tourist season runs until March. Nearby accommodations close at the end of March and don't reopen until November. If you want to avoid the crowds and have a more peaceful experience, go towards the end of the tourist season in March. You can still visit the salt desert in April and May though, on a day trip from Bhuj. However, it's very hot during the day. Plus, there's an absence of basic facilities for tourists (food, water and toilets). You'll pretty much have the salt desert to yourself though!

It's best to head out into the desert only in the early morning or evening, otherwise the salt can be blinding. You can take a moonlight camel safari into the desert. The full moon is the most magical time of month to experience it.

Getting There

Resorts in the area will arrange transport for you from Bhuj. There are a couple of ways of getting to Bhuj.

• If taking a train, it's most convenient from  Mumbai  (15 hours).
• Bhuj has a domestic airport. Air India flies there non-stop from Mumbai (2 hours).
• Buses to Bhuj are available from many places in and around Gujarat, and the road is in good condition.

If you want to do the Great Rann on a day trip from Bhuj, you can hire a cab or motor bike. Alternatively, small group tour packages are available.

Going on a guided tour takes the hassle out of planning and sightseeing.  Kutch Adventures India  is based in Bhuj, and is involved in rural and responsible tourism in the area. Owner Kuldip will put together a bespoke itinerary for you, including visits to surrounding handicraft villages (which Kutch is renowned for).

Permits for Visiting the Rann of Kutch

The Rann of Kutch is a sensitive area, due to its proximity to the Pakistani border. Therefore, a permit is required to visit the salt desert. This can be obtained on the way at the Bhirandiyara village (famous for  mawa , a sweet made from milk) checkpoint, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Bhuj. The cost is 100 rupees for an adult, 50 rupees for a child aged six to 12 years, 25 rupees for a motor bike and 50 rupees for a car. You'll need to submit a photocopy of your ID, plus show the original. Do note that the checkpoint may not open until late morning (around 11 a.m.) and is not open at all during the off-season. Alternatively, Indian citizens can now get permits online here.

You must present the permit to the officers at the army checkpoint at the entry to the salt desert about 45 minutes further on from Bhirandiyara village.

Where to Stay

It's most convenient to stay in Dhordo or nearby Hodka.

The most popular option is the  Gateway to Rann Resort  at Dhordo. It's made up of characterful Kutchi  bhungas  (mud huts), traditionally crafted and decorated with handicrafts. Rates start from 4,500 rupees for an air-conditioned double, per night.

The Gujarat government has also set up tourist accommodations, the  Toran Rann Resort , opposite the army checkpoint near the entrance to the salt desert. This resort is closest to the salt desert, although the location is not particularly scenic.  Bhunga  accommodations cost 4,500-5,500 rupees per night, plus tax. Breakfast and dinner are included.

Another recommended option is the  Shaam-e-Sarhad  (Sunset at the Border) Village Resort in Hodka. The resort is owned and managed by the local residents. You can choose to stay in eco-friendly mud tents (3,400 rupees per night for a double, including meals) or traditional  bhungas  (4,800 rupees per night for a double, including meals). Both have attached bathrooms and running water, although hot water is provided only in buckets. Family cottages are also available. Visits to local artist villages are a highlight.

The Rann Utsav

Gujarat Tourism holds a  Rann Ustav  festival, which begins at the start of November and extends until the end of February. A tent city with hundreds of luxury tents is set up near the Gateway to Rann Resort at Dhordo for visitors, along with rows of food and handicraft stalls. The package price includes sightseeing trips to surrounding attractions. Activities offered included camel cart rides, ATV rides, para motoring, rifle shooting, kids' entertainment zone, spa treatments, and cultural shows. Unfortunately, the festival has become increasingly commercialized in recent years, which has resulted in pollution and garbage in the area. Some people complain that it's ruined the atmosphere. If this is a concern, ideally plan to visit after the festival is over.

Other Ways to See the Rann of Kutch

If you want to see the Rann of Kutch from a different perspective, Kalo Dungar (Black Hill) offers a panoramic view from 462 meters above sea level. It's the highest point in Kutch and you can see all the way across to the Pakistani border. Kalo Dungar is accessible via the village of Khavda, which is 25 kilometers (16 miles) away and around 70 kilometers (44 miles) from Bhuj. This village is home to artisans who specialize in block printing, including ajrakh block printing from Pakistan. It's best to take your own transport as public transport is infrequent. The old Lakhpat Fort (140 kilometers/87 miles from Bhuj) also provides a fabulous view of the Rann of Kutch.

I experienced a stunning sunset at the White Rann, discovered some of Nirona village’s almost-extinct handicrafts, spotted wild asses in Little Rann, and got into a fun mood at the colorful Rann Utsav . There were so many wonderful things to do in Kutch that I could go back and spend a month there and still not be done.

Amazing things to do in Kutch, Gujarat

They say, “Kutch nahi dekha to kuch nahi dekha”. “If you haven’t seen Kutch, you haven’t really seen anything.”

Honestly, after my recent trip to Kutch, I strongly believe in this adage. Kutch is so full of amazing places and unique things that visiting India without exploring Kutch is almost a crime.

Located on the westernmost end of Gujarat, bordering Pakistan, is the irresistible Kutch district that boasts of a long history and stunning natural beauty. Kutch was once the cradle of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, housed the illustrious Kingdom of Cutch, and suffered a devastating earthquake in 2001. It is home to one of the largest salt deserts in the world, the enigmatic hills of Kalo Dungar, and the near extinct Asiatic Wild Ass. Kutch has an arid terrain where people have added color to their lives through art, craft, dance, and music.

Kutch is a destination with tons of interesting things to do and seeing all of them would probably take a lifetime.

My bucket list for Kutch keeps growing every day as I discover new places to visit, new arts to discover, and new foods to try. So, here’s my list of the most incredible things to do in Kutch, Gujarat which, I am sure, will keep growing longer with time.

Attend the colorful Rann Utsav

The Rann Festival , commonly known as Rann Utsav, is held in Rann of Kutch every year from the 1st of November to the 20th of February.

This unique festival celebrates the beauty of the India’s largest salt desert, its people, their culture and heritage. In short, Rann Utsav is a celebration of life, resilience, and the ability of humans to create wonders even in the face of adversity.

In the 4 months of the Rann Festival, local artisans set up numerous handicraft stores. Food stalls pop out of nowhere. And hotels and resorts set up temporary but luxurious accommodations. It is like one huge fest that lasts for 4 long months giving you plenty of opportunities to eat, shop, dance, and be merry.

It is a great idea to plan your Kutch trip around the same time as the Rann Utsav so that you can see the best that the festival has to offer as well as visit several other destinations within Kutch.

Experience a sunrise/sunset at White Rann

If there is just one thing you want to do in Kutch, then go watch a sunrise or sunset in White Rann . I did the sunset tour and some of my friends went for the sunrise trip. Both were equally magical.

The White Rann or Safed Rann is a salt desert that begins in Kutch, Gujarat and goes all the way till Sindh, Pakistan. During the rainy season, the low-lying mudflats of White Rann get filled in by salt water. After the rains, the water cannot recede (because of gravity) and slowly begins to evaporate, thus leaving the salt behind.

What results is a beautiful white salt desert that stretches till the eyes can see. And watching the sun go down against a vast expanse of white is simply magical!

December – January is the best time to visit White Rann. If you wish to take your experience a notch higher, then do a tour on a full-moon night. That is beyond magic!

Stay in a traditional bhunga

Bhungas are traditional Kutchi houses that are circular in shape and have thatched roofs. They are built in a special way so as to resist earthquake tremors and moderate the extreme temperatures of Kutch.

Very often, these bhungas are decorated in beautiful Lippan art. Lippan is a mud-and-mirror art that is native to the Kutch region. A mixture of clay and camel dung covers the interiors of the bhunga. A stunning assemblage of mirror work over the clay gives each bhunga a character of its own. The exterior walls are further painted in bright colors and remarkable designs.

Luckily, several homestays in the region provide us with an opportunity to do so. Also, I loved the bhungas and the art inside them at the Gateway to the Rann Resort , if you are looking for a luxurious stay.

Visit the ruins of Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

I haven’t had the chance to visit Dholavira yet but it is very high on my Kutch bucket list. Especially after seeing the ruins of Lothal , on a day trip from Ahmedabad , I have been itching to explore the archaeological site of Dholavira, one of the largest Harappan sites in India.

The excavations at Dholavira reveal that the city was a major urban center during the time of the Indus Valley Civilization. It was first settled in between 3000 – 2500 BC thus making it more than 4500 years old. Dholavira was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in July 2021.

The ruins give us deep insights into the lives and living conditions of the people of the Harappan civilization. This makes Dholavira one of the best historical places to visit in Kutch.

It is now easy to get to Dholavira from Bhuj and the Rann. The drive takes around 2.5 hours (one way) with the new connecting road in place. Earlier, the drive used to take 5 hours (one way) thus making it painful for a day trip. But now things have gotten better.

As of December 2021, a new kuccha road is in place that reduces drive time from 5 to 2.5 hours. By the end of 2022, a pucca road should come up too. Get wowed by the views from Kalo Dungar

If you thought the Rann of Kutch was all about flat white deserts, then you are wrong. Because right here, in the middle of Rann, is a series of hills, the highest among them being Kalo Dungar.

Kalo Dungar literally translates to Black Hill. There is an interesting story why it is called so. In the olden days, when the people of Sindh traveled to Kutch, they could see nothing but barren land. It was either the white salt deserts or the mudflats of the Rann. After walking for days, they would spot the hills of Kalo Dungar. These hills appeared black from a distance and that’s how the name stuck.

From the top of Kalo Dungar, you will get stunning views of the White Rann as it stretches all the way from Gujarat to Sindh . On a clear day, you will be able to see the border of Pakistan as well.

Some of the resorts can also arrange for you to visit the India-Pakistan border at Nada Bet, Gujarat. Here, you will experience something similar to what you see at the Wagah Border in Punjab.

The best way to get to Kalo Dungar is by a private transport. Resorts also have their Kalo Dungar tours which typically happen on buses. The bus will drop you at a parking lot 500m below the hilltop. From there, you can take a jeep (INR 30 one way), ride a camel (INR 100 one way), or simply walk to get to the top. Remember that even if you take a jeep (which I did), you will have to climb 50 odd stairs to get to the top of the viewpoint.

Pay your respects at the 400-year-old Dattatreya Temple

If you are visiting Kalo Dungar, do not forget to pay your respects at the 400-year-old Dattatreya Temple that is located on the same hill.

The temple is the abode of Lord Dattatreya, a saint who once visited the hills of Kalo Dungar. It is believed that he encountered a pack of hungry jackals and offered them a part of his body for dinner.

Even today, the temple authorities cook prasad (offering to God) every night and offer it to the jackals who still feed on it. The offering is called long prasad which is probably a corrupted version of “le ang” (take my body part).

Discover the dying arts of Kutch at Nirona village

Now this was one of my favorite places to visit in Kutch – the vibrant and colorful village of Nirona. It is incredible how many different art forms the village of Nirona is home to.

First, make a stop at the Khatri household which has preserved the very beautiful Rogan art for the past 400 years.

It is believed that Rogan art came to India from Persia. Today, only the Khatri family creates authentic Rogan artefacts.

Using castor oil (also known as rogan) and a metal stylus, the artists create stunning patterns on cloth. Their “Tree of Life” designs are the most popular and sell for thousands of rupees. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, gifted a Rogan Tree of Life to Barack Obama during his US visit in 2014.

Copper bells

Handmade copper bells – another interesting art form that the family of Husen Luhar creates from scrap metal. Enter into their courtyard and you will be greeted by the rings and chimes of hundreds of bells.

The family makes copper bells from scrap iron that is obtained from cars and other junk, beats them into a thin iron plate, coats them with copper, and creates beautiful shapes from them. Then, they make these shapes into bells by just fixing them on top of each other, without any welding. Simply watching the process is such a fulfilling experience. You wouldn’t want to come back without buying one for yourself. Here is their official Facebook page though it hasn’t been updated in quite sometime.

Also, remember to listen to Husen Luhar playing the morchang. That, my friends, is absolutely divine.

Lacquer art

Usually, I would associate lacquer art with bangles but in Nirona, I found lacquer art in the most unusual of things – bread rolling pins, spatulas, and utensils. There were toys too but I found no lacquer bangles here.

Lacquer, which is obtained from the sap of a tree, is mixed with various organic colors to coat wooden objects and give them vibrant colors and designs. So, if you are in the mood to add some color to your kitchen, do make a stop at the home of lacquer artisans in Nirona.

Visit the resurrected village of Gandhi nu Gam

We all know of the devastating earthquake of 2001 that destroyed much of Bhuj and Kutch. Thousands died, villages perished, and people were rendered homeless. What was left was rubble and ruins all around!

Vastu-Shilpa Foundation (VSF) took up the herculean task of resurrecting 13 villages in the region. Gandhi nu Gam was one of them. A plan was drawn. Locals were involved and Gandhi nu Gam rose like a phoenix from the ashes.

As soon as you step into the village today, you see colorful bhungas dotting the place. Women in vibrant attires sell pretty handicrafts. What we cannot see is the strong will power and determination of the people who literally came back from the dead.

Enjoy a beach day at Mandvi

Do you know that Kutch has beaches too? Yes, the Kutch district in Gujarat has a long coastline that borders Gulf of Kutch. This gives rise to sprawling, golden sand beaches, many of which lie undiscovered.

Mandvi is one such beautiful beach in Kutch. It is located just an hour away from Bhuj and makes for a great day trip.

Feel like a royal at Vijay Vilas Palace in Mandvi

The city of Mandvi was once a prosperous port city. Consequently, it held great importance for the Kingdom of Cutch.

Maharao Shri Khengarji, one of the most renowned maharajas of Kutch, went on to build his summer palace in Mandvi. His son, Shri Vijayaraji, used the palace very frequently. It came to be known as Vijay Vilas Palace.

The palace is a stunning example of Rajputana architecture and features beautiful stone carvings, jalis, murals, and colored glass work. An in-house museum gives you deep insights into the history of the monument and the region.

Explore the royal cenotaphs of Chhatedi Bhuj

Looking for more historical things to do in Kutch? Visit the royal cenotaphs at Bhuj Chhatedi.

These are the cenotaphs of the members of Kutch’s royal family. Jadeja rulers built them in the 18th century. The cenotaphs are shaped like umbrellas and hence, called chhatris. Architecture is a mix of Mughal and Rajput styles.

The largest cenotaph in the complex is the Rao Lakpatji Chhatri at the far end of the enclosure. You can only see the arches of this chattri that are still intact. The domes fell during the earthquake of 2001 and haven’t been restored yet. Right in the middle of the structure is a stone slab that suggests that the 15 wives of Rao Lakpatji gave up their lives at his funeral pyre.

Bhuj Chhatedi is free to enter and is open from sunrise to sunset.

Shop till you drop at Bhujodi

Bhujodi is an art and craft hub that is located right next to the city of Bhuj. Here, you will find numerous examples of Kutchi handicrafts such as shawls, dupattas, bags, footwear – all loomed in the open courtyards and verandahs of the Vankar community that resides here.

If you haven’t already purchased your Kutch knick-knacks and souvenirs, then Bhujodi is a good place to stop. You will be overwhelmed by the choices here.

Walk through the palaces of Bhuj

When in Bhuj, do not miss two iconic palaces – Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal. 

Built in 1865 in the Italian Gothic architectural style, Prag Mahal has an ornate Durbar hall that is replete with statues and carvings. Its 45m clock tower is especially remarkable. As you stand outside the palace appreciating its beauty and craftsmanship, it’s quite easy to get confused if you are in India or medieval Europe .

Aina Mahal, on the other hand, is a palace filled with mirror work. Hira Mahal and Fuvara Mahal here are truly beautiful. 

Discover the colors of Kutchi villages

What I loved about walking through the lanes of Kutchi villages was the abundance of colors in them. Vibrant doors, charming alleyways, and smiling faces were waiting for me at every corner.

If you have some time to spare, walk through these character-filled lanes of Kutch’s villages and tell me what you find at every turn.

Go stargazing in Rann

Yes, you can actually go, stargaze at a remote spot in the White Rann.

Even though the entire Rann is a great place to look up and see the stars, it is kind of difficult in the resort areas because of too much light. However, your resort ( Dhordo Tent City does this) can organize a stargazing tour for you.

You will head to a spot that is about 10kms away from Dhordo where you can see the milky way in all its glory. They also have telescopes to make your tour even more interesting. If you are a stargazer or a photographer, you would not want to miss this.

Visit the Wild Ass Sanctuary in Little Rann of Kutch

I was quite surprised to find out that Rann of Kutch was not just about culture, history, and colors. It was also a lot about wildlife.

I did a open jeep safari in Little Rann of Kutch and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Little Rann of Kutch or LRK is home to the Asiatic Wild Ass, a near threatened species. Here, you will find the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, one of its kind in the world.

The safari takes you through the arid lands of the Rann where you will spot wild asses, numerous birds including lesser flamingoes and short-eared owls. You can also see the process of salt making in designated areas.

Best time to visit Kutch

The best time to visit Kutch is during the winters when temperatures are low and the weather is mild. The famous Rann Utsav is also held in the winters and it is absolutely the best season to see the white desert.

November – February is perfect. Be sure to carry a jacket with you because evenings get cold here.

Where to stay in Kutch?

Bhuj, the largest and most important town in Kutch district, is a great place to stay and explore the many beautiful places of Kutch. Many of the destinations that I have spoken above are just a day trip away. Plus, Bhuj has some of the best hotels and homestays in the region.

If you are looking at value for money, try “Go Desert” Homestay located in Sanskar Nagar, Bhuj. Amazing hosts, yummy food, and clean rooms are their USPs. In case you want to spend your days at an established hotel, try Fern Residency with excellent food, spacious rooms, and a great location. If you love grand havelis and open courtyard homes, try The Kutchh Courtyard – an innovative concept by the husband and wife duo – Abhinav and Smita.

If you are visiting Little Rann of Kutch, consider staying at Rann Riders in Dasada . Set in the middle of marshy wetlands, the place boasts of authentic bhunga homes and delicious local food. Try their farm fresh juices – the guava one is the best. They will also arrange safaris for you in the Wild Ass Sanctuary.

Many tourists visit Kutch to witness the vibrant Rann Utsav. For that, you would want to stay somewhere close to the festival and the White Rann. How to get to Kutch?

The best way to get to Kutch is to arrive at Bhuj, the headquarters of Kutch District. If you are traveling from Mumbai, you are in luck because Bhuj has a small airport and just one Alliance Air flight flies in and out of Bhuj to Mumbai, 4 days a week. Have a look at the Bhuj Airport official website for flight updates.

If you are traveling from anywhere else in the country, you will need to take the train or the bus. Train journey from Ahmedabad to Bhuj takes about 7 hours while a bus ride can take you anywhere between 8-10 hours. Book your train tickets on IRCTC and bus tickets on Redbus .

Practical information to plan your Kutch trip

• Finding good Wi-Fi may be a problem in the entire region. Even your trusted mobile network may be quite patchy. So, be prepared for that.
• When I traveled to Kutch in December 2021, Vodafone 4G network worked decently in and around Dhordo village, Bhuj, and Nirona. Connectivity was bad on the hills of Kalo Dungar and the White Rann.
• Carry or buy colorful and/or traditional clothes to wear at the White Rann. They look great against the white landscape.
• It is hard (almost impossible) to find good non-veg food in Rann of Kutch. I would recommend sticking to the local, vegetarian fare.
• Gujarat is a dry state. So, no alcohol.

Great Rann of Kutch: Essential Travel Guide

India is a vast country covering a total area of around 3.28 million square km. The diversity in history, culture, landscapes, architecture, and cuisines is mind-boggling.  There is so much to see and experience that it may take years to explore the hidden gems. When you have places like the Taj Mahal, Rajasthan , Kashmir , Kerala , Delhi, Goa , and Uttarakhand to visit, it is not surprising that a small region near the western border of India is mostly overlooked by travelers. But thanks to a successful campaign to promote tourism by the Gujarat government with the charismatic Amitabh Bachchan as the brand ambassador, places like Gir National Park and Great Rann of Kutch are slowly finding a place on the tourist map of India.   

What is the Rann of Kutch?

Rann means barren land. The Rann of Kutch is a geographical marvel located in the Kutch district of Gujarat. Kutch was a part of the Arabian Sea, but a massive earthquake in 1809 separated it from the sea. The exposed sea bed was transformed into a vast barren land that remains dry with white salt and sand during summer/winter and looks like a massive sea during the rainy season. The extensive mudflat and salt clay of the marsh, which now lies about 15 meters above sea level, gets submerged by the high tides rising from the Arabian Sea in May-June. 

During monsoons, the Rann of Kutch also gets flooded with water from neighboring rivers like Luni, Sindh, Bhuki, Rupen, etc. As the monsoon ends, the seawater slowly evaporates and recedes from the shallow wetland, leaving behind an enormous stretch of crunchy snowy white salt. 

Why should you visit the Great Rann of Kutch?

The largest known salt desert in the world, the Great Rann of Kutch provides a surreal and unique spectacle that you might not see anywhere else in the world. Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia offers a similar experience. But, Salar de Uyuni is not a salt marsh, it is a salt flat that was formed due to the transformation of lakes in prehistoric times. 

Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh, that remains underwater during the monsoon season but is visible for the rest of the year. As you stand on the salt-tinted land, the vast expense of white marshland will leave you mesmerized. The emptiness for miles can be scary and the only thing one can see is the white snowy land melting into the distant horizon. Sunrises and sunsets are flamboyant as the changing hues of the sun are gloriously reflected on the white snowy marsh.

If this natural grandiosity is not enough, there are lots to keep you occupied. You can shop for gorgeous authentic handicrafts that can be found everywhere in the area – the Tent City, small villages, fairs, etc. Bedcovers, cushions, quilts, stoles, jackets, and skirts all adorned with exquisite embroidery and applique work are a must-buy. Then there are Bandini sarees, Ghagra-cholis, Juttis, lacquer curios, trinkets, silver ornaments, puppets, and other traditional stuff that you can pick as souvenirs .  During the Rann Utsav, there are cultural and musical performances every day by local artisans. You can enjoy plays, puppet shows, magic shows, folk music, and local dances.  

Location of Great Rann of Kutch?

Rann of Kutch is located mostly in the state of Gujarat (India), but some parts spill into the province of Sindh (Pakistan). It lies in the Thar Desert in Kutch, a district situated in the North-West of Gujarat. The best way to reach the salt marsh is from Bhuj, which is around 85 km from Dhordo – a small town that the government has developed as the Gateway to the Great Rann of Kutch.

How to reach the Great Rann Of Kutch?

The Great Rann of Kutch is situated on the Western border of India, and is not easily accessible from most parts of the country – this is one of the main reasons why the Rann of Kutch is not so popular amongst travelers. Reaching the Great Rann should not be a problem if you are in Gujarat. Outside of Gujarat, Mumbai is the best place to start your journey to the Great Rann of Kutch. As mentioned before, you must reach Bhuj first and then plan your onward journey. Resorts in the area normally arrange transport from Bhuj.

By Road – Bhuj is 335 km from Ahmedabad and it would take you 7 hours to reach Bhuj. Standard and Luxury buses are available for Bhuj from major towns and cities in Gujarat and the roads are in good condition.

By Train – Kutch’s rail hubs are Bhuj and Gandhidham, which are well-connected to major cities. A train from Mumbai-Bhuj takes around 15 hours. It takes 21 hours to reach Bhuj from Delhi by train.

By Air – Bhuj has a domestic airport. There are non-stop regular flights from Mumbai to Bhuj that take two hours.

Best Time to visit Rann of Kutch?

The best time to visit Rann of Kutch is from November to February when The Rann Utsav organized by the Gujarat government takes place. During these winter months, days are pleasant but it can get freezing cold at night, especially in December and January . March also sees a few tourists, but by the end of March all accommodations, eateries, and basic facilities close down. Summer(April-May) is scorching hot, and the temperatures can touch 50°, making it impossible to explore the region. The Rann of Kutch is parched for most of the year, but there is rainfall between June to September. The Rann begins to dry up in October, transforming the Great Rann into a wide ocean of salt.

The full moon is the most coveted time to visit the Rann of Kutch as miles and miles of salty marshes sparkle like precious gems under the moonlit sky. The White Rann glows steely blue reflecting the bright moonlight. The Great Rann comes alive with local artists performing folk dance and songs in the white saline desert.

Where to stay in Rann of Kutch?

Staying in Dhordo is the most convenient option to see the Great Rann of Kutch. If you are visiting the region during the Rann Utsav, you can camp at The Tent City – the complex built closest to the entrance of the Rann. T he Te nt City provides you with luxurious and spacious tents with all the amenities required for a comfortable stay. Another option is White Rann Resort where you can lodge in tents as well as the mud Bhungas (huts). These two packages offered by Gujarat Tourism are all-inclusive and you don’t have to worry about anything. They also organized a permit to visit the Great Rann. They are expensive but well worth the cost. 

If you are looking for cheaper alternatives, you can stay in one of the many resorts and homestays that have sprouted in Dhordo in recent years due to the increasing popularity of the Rann Festival. Some of the available options include Gateway to Rann Resort, Bhuj House, Rann Village Resort, Praveg Resort, Rann Resort, Dholavira Rann Resort, and Kutir Craft Village Resort.

How to Get a Permit?

Due to its proximity to the Pakistan border, you require a permit from the Border Security Force (BSF) to visit the Great Rann of Kutch. The permit can be acquired at the Bhirandiyara check post, located around 20 km before Dhordo. Indian tourists can also apply online for the permit. You just need ID proof for validation. The check post opens at 11 am and closes at 5:30 pm

What is Rann Utsav?

Gujarat Tourism holds a Rann Utsav(festival) every year from November to February. The Rann Utsav is a vivid and colorful festival showcasing the best of Kutch culture, handicrafts, cuisine, and heritage. Around 350 luxurious tents are set up in Dhordo in a large complex spread across an area of 5,00,000 sq. meters. Around 35,000 visitors stay at Tent City every year. The sprawling complex is abuzz with folk performances, vibrant shopping options, festive fervor, and multiple adventure activities. You can opt for a 1-2-3-night all-inclusive package. The package price includes pick-up/drop from Bhuj, food, stay, sightseeing trips, and adventure activities. 

Events are also held in different locations around the Kutch area to give tourists a peep into the local culture and traditions. The festive extravaganza adds much-needed color to the white barren land. The carnival not only gives you the opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of the endless salt marshes but also brings the unique and ethnically diverse culture of the Kutch region to the forefront.

Other things to do in the Great Rann of Kutch?

If you are looking for other places to visit during your visit, there are a few interesting places nearby. Mandvi Beach, Dholavira, Narayan Sarovar, and Kalo Dungar (which offer panoramic views of the entire region), are a few of the places that can be visited if you have the time. Camel rides, camel-cart rides, ziplining, paramotoring, ATV rides, archery, rock climbing, meditation, yoga, and spa are some of the activities offered during the Rann Utsav. There is also a Kid’s Zone to keep the little ones entertained.

Some useful tips

• Two days are sufficient to explore the Great Rann of Kutch and the surrounding attractions.
• The best time to visit the salt desert is early morning or evening as the salt can be blinding
• During the winter months, days are sunny and pleasant, but it gets very cold and windy at night. Carry all your woolens – thermals, coats, caps, gloves, boots, socks, etc. You will need them during sunrise and full-moon excursions. Summers are really hot and humid, so pack loose, breathable, cotton clothing. 
• The tents in The Tent City do not have any sort of locks. Anyone can open the zip and enter the tent. However, the whole complex is under CCTV surveillance and quite safe.
• The region is known for Kutchi embroidery, tie-dye, leatherwork, pottery, bell metal craft, and the famous Rogan painting – so shop to your heart’s content.
• You will get the best of Kutch and Gujarati cuisine, but non-veg food is not served. Gujarat is a dry state and alcohol is not allowed in the entire region.
• Paramotoring over the Great Rann is an experience that should not be missed.
• Bhuj airport is a defense airport and you cannot take photos and videos.
• The region of the Great Rann of Kutch has good internet connectivity and you won’t face any problems in using your mobile phone and other gadgets.

Hi , this was a very informative post. I was looking at doing Bhuj and surrounding areas in 2 days in mid March (around full moon) Is it feasible to do this (we don’t mind long days) : Day 0- 1.Ahmedabad – Bhuj (over night bus), arriving early morning at Bhuj. Day 1 -2.Take an auto (?) from Bhuj for the whole day and cover the following: 1.Take permit 2.Visit village Hodka /Ludiya / Gandhi nu Gaam for crafts 3.Proceed to Kalo Dongra for sunset 4.Proceed to Dhordo for some photography for moonlight on White dessert 5.Return back to Bhuj & stay the night

Day2 : 1.Lakhpat fort 2.Narayan Sarovar / Chari Dhand 3.Come back to Bhuj (4pm possible?) 4.Overnight Take bus from Bhuj to Somnath or should we look at staying somewhere close to Dhordo and do the sunrise and then head to Lakhpat to see the fort on Day 2

Day 3: 1.Take local bus from Somnath to Gir by lunch 2.Do 4-7 pm safari at Gir

However, I would recommend that you visit Dhordo during sunset also. The visuals and aesthetics there are much better than the one at Kala Dongra, so if you have to choose one, opt for sunset at Dhordo. The second day, I wouldn’t recommend it. Traveling alone would take 6-7 hours and then sighseeung. You won’t be able to come back by 4 pm. Though I haven’t covered that route so not the best judge.

Witness the Gorgeous White Salt Desert, Great Rann of Kutch

Sprawling in an area of 7,000 sq km, White Salt Desert in Great Rann of Kutch is a magical place as well as the top tourist attraction. Witness the Rich Heritage of Kutch Region at Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal at Bhuj

Not so far from the Kutch Museum are the royal heritages called Prag Mahal and Aina Mahal , the two best places to visit in Kutch. Visit Vijay Vilas Palace, the Famed Film Shooting Location in Kutch

One of the popular points of tourist interest, Vijay Vilas Palace is situated in Mandvi, which is about 65 kms from Bhuj city. This scenic town was once the hub for ship building industry, however now, it boasts of its rich heritage and beautiful beach. Sprawling across a land of 450-acre, the Vijay Vilas Palace is the highlight of the town and this has also earned it the benefit of being the film shoot location for many bollywood movies; the most prominent being Lagaan, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and R Rajkumar. The long and painful quest to visit Kutch finally came to a delightful end. I not only experienced the stunning white salt marsh of Kutch but also got a taste of the famous Rann Utsav festival . From the colorful cultural villages like Nirona and Gandhi nu Gam to historical places in Kutch that include the new UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dholavira and seeing the Wild Ass Wildlife sanctuary , I found myself mesmerized by the various shades of Kutch.

Is Rann of Kutch the same as Kutch? – Information and facts about Kutch

Most people assume the Kutch (or Kachch) is synonymous with the Rann of Kutch which is the great white desert. Well, this isn’t completely wrong as the Rann of Kutch occupies 50% of the district that is largely termed as Kutch. The other parts of the district include higher sandy grasslands and gorgeous beaches like Mandvi . Here are some facts about Kutch that will further clarify this difference.

• Kutch means a tortoise in the local language. The name was derived from the shape that the map of Kutch made.
• The area of Kutch district is 45,674 sq km and that makes it the largest district of Gujarat . The headquarters is in Bhuj and the other important towns include Mandavi, Rapar, Anjar and Bhachau.
• While one side of this district has the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Kutch bordering it, at the other end are the salty marshlands – better known as the Rann of Kutch.
• The Gujarat Rann of Kutch is divided into the Greater Rann of Kutch and the Little Rann of Kutch . Together they make up around 26,000 sq km of the district of Kutch.
• The Greater Rann of Kutch is a saline wetland that is submerged in water during monsoons and becomes a beautiful white desert during winters. A part of this desert extends into the Sindh district of Pakistan. It is believed to be the largest salt desert in the world.
• The Little Rann of Kutch is also, a salt marsh but also, includes a few grasslands which are sanctuaries for some amazing and rare wildlife like the Indian Wild Ass.
• The Rann of Kutch was originally a sea basin where the great Indus river along with other rivers used to empty itself. However, with the earthquakes and geological shifts, the land got separated from the rest of the sea and what remains are the salty mudflats.

History of Kachch

Kutch has been a setting for many mythological stories. Go to Dhola Vira – one of the historical places to visit in Rann of Kutch and you will find evidence going back to 8000 years – specifically the Indus Valley Civilization. (more on that coming up). It is not known what happened after the city of Dhola Vira got buried but Kutch definitely existed when Alexander The Great came to India. He mentions this place in his Greek chronicles.

From Greek rulers to Persian commanders, then the Mauryans and finally the Guptas in the 1 st century, Kutch found several rulers. It was documented as Kiecha by the famous Chinese traveler and scholar of that time – Hiuen Tsang . After the Guptas, the Maitraka dynasty took over in 5 th century, followed by the Chavdas In the 7 th and finally the Solankis in the 10 th century. During the rule of Jadejas (Vaghela dynasty renamed), it became a princely state with a council of 12 called Bhar Bhayat.

The Jadejas succumbed to the British East India Company in 1819 and they became vassals in Kutch. Upon India’s independence, it reverted to the status of a princely state until the devastating earthquake in Kutch in 1950s. Post the calamity, it was merged with the state of Gujarat.

Kutch has seen several natural disasters of epic proportions including a cyclone in 1998 and the Bhuj earthquake of 2001. Despite the serious damage, the district has risen and remained as an important part of the state. Visiting Kutch allowed me to see the resilient nature of the Kutchi people and their love of tradition and culture.

Best places to visit in Kutch Gujarat

With such an illustrious history and unique geological landscapes, I am sure it is now obvious to you that there is a diverse set of things to do in Kutch. Each of these attractions in Kutch offers you a multitude of activities – all of which I have detailed in this part of the travel guide to Kutch.  

White Desert of Kutch – the Great Rann of Kutch

It is natural to begin this list with the most renowned of the Kutch Tourist Places – the great white desert. To be honest, this was the main reason why I wanted to visit the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. The endless expanse of the white landscape appears so surreal. In many cases, the place appears like a winter wonderland filled with snow.

Rann in Hindi means desert and for most, that would be heaps of sand. However, the Rann of Kutch is neither snow nor sand. I t is actually a salt marsh – and one of the largest in the world. During monsoons, the place gets soaked with water and it looks nothing like what you see in the pictures. Eventually, as it starts drying up, you get this endless expanse of the White desert. The white Rann of Kutch remains like this from October to March after which it slowly cracks to the summer and finally submerges in monsoons.

After spending a complete day in the white desert of Rann, I could not but help compare the landscape to the Taj Mahal in Agra. You might find it strange but the kaleidoscope of colors in this rare landscape in Gujarat was akin to the manner the Taj Mahal shines through the day. 

The sunrise over the Zero-point of Kutch let me witness the soft pink glow of the white Rann while through the day, this white salt marsh in Kutch sparkled white. The sunset swathes an orange hue over the desert before it shines white again under the moon. The shades of Rann matched the hues of Taj Mahal through the day. If you ask me which is the best time of the day to visit Rann of Kutch – my answer would be – depends on which shade you would like to see! 

Adding to the fun of this play of colors are the various things to do in the Greater Rann of Kutch. Here is a quick list of activities that are possible in one of the best tourist places in Kutch Gujarat.

• Opt for a cycle tour to the Rann of Kutch. There are cycles available at most resorts in Dhordo (the base of the Rann Utsav festival) and if you are staying the Tent City, then you can take one of their guided cycle tours to explore the white desert.
• Try Paramotoring at the Sunset point of the Rann of Kutch
• Go on an ATV ride over the salty marsh
• Sign up for a star-gazing tour at the Rann of Kutch. Tent City has one every day. And I would not say no to one especially if you want to experience the glory of the full moon over the white desert of Kutch. When I visited, there was a meteor shower expected and my co-travelers did see their fill of shooting stars.

Important Tip : Make sure you wear crocs or washable shoes when you visit the Rann of Kutch, especially at dawn. The marshy soil is usually damp and your feet are likely to sink. Yes, you will be leaving muddy footprints around  and if you are wearing jeans or pants, they will get soiled. So dress accordingly.

Taj Mahal – the wonder of the world is one mesmerizing monument that glows in various shades under the sun. Check out how you can experience these shades and decide on your best time to visit it.

Bhuj – the headquarters of Kutch

This isn’t just the administrative capital of the Kutch district. Once the capital of the Jadejas, this town has its own set of tales to share. From its beautiful palaces and cenotaphs to modern temples and a lake teeming with migratory birds, Bhuj definitely requires more than a day to explore. Here are some of the most unmissable parts of this town –

This literally translates into the palace of mirrors and was built almost 350 years back. You will find the exteriors damaged by the earthquake but once you enter, be prepared to be mesmerized by its very European interiors – starting with the glass chandeliers. There are several interesting paintings within the Aina Mahal of Bhuj.

Prag Mahal – one of the key tourist places in Kutch

Right next to the Aina Mahal, is the Prag Mahal that was built in the 19 th century by Maharaja Pragmalji . The Palace is conspicuous with its very Gothic Italian architecture. The palace was the backdrop of the movie Lagaan -which was set around the British Era. It has a stunning Durbar hall and a tall clock tower that can be climbed for the lovely views of Bhuj.

Bhuj Chattardi

The red sandstone cenotaphs of the Jadeja family are a work of marvel and a testament to the local architecture. While there has been a lot of damage owing to the earthquake of Bhuj, what remains is still worth a visit. The intricately carved ceilings, tall pillars and detailed hero stones will leave anyone spellbound – even today.

Museums of Bhuj

There are several museums in Bhuj that you can add to your Kutch places to visit. One is the City Museum that has a collection of rare historical artifacts – from coins to weapons, arts and crafts, textiles and more. The museum is an ideal foundation for anyone who wants to get to the roots and the culture of Kutch.

The other museum that I would recommend you visit is the Smritivan Earthquake museum that was recently built near the Bhuj fort. Meant as a memorial for the devastating earthquake victims, this place will leave you with a lot of food for thought. The galleries span the history of Kutch, the actual event, the stories of survivors, the aftermath – positive and negative effects and the new future. The location of the museum is such that you can enjoy a gorgeous sunrise or sunset over Bhuj when you reach its highest point.

Swaminarayan temple

The white marble temple will awe you with its spellbinding architecture. It has over 250 pillars and 25 domes . The temple exteriors did suffer some damage with the natural disaster of Bhuj but magically, the idols inside the temple escaped and remained intact.

Hamirsar Lake

The lake within Bhuj town attracts several migratory birds and is an ideal place for bird lovers. From the pelicans to cormorants and the common mallards, there is plenty to be spotted around this water body that was made by the Jadeja kings.

Important tip: It might be a good idea to keep Bhuj as a base for a day or two during your Rann of Kutch visit. Not only will you be able to cover all these places to visit in Kutch Bhuj but also, make day trips to the nearby traditional Kutch villages.

Traditional villages of Kutch

They say that if you want the authentic flavor of a place, then you should head to the rustic hamlets there. Quite true I would say – especially when the best places to visit in the Rann of Kutch are their traditional villages . Not only do you get to experience the local life but also, learn about the heritage art and handicrafts of Kutch – most of which you can buy and carry back home as souvenirs.

When you visit the Kutch villages, keep an eye out for the traditional Bhungas – round homes of the Kutchis. Do not dismiss them as thatched dwellings. They are in fact, ingenious structures designed to withstand the earthquakes that this region is prone to. Constructed using bamboo, clay and cow dung, these homes adapt to the harsh climate of Kutch – keeping their residents warm in winters and cool in summers. The thatched straw roof collapses inwards in case of an earthquake and is made such that it can withstand strong winds.

Most of the Kutchi residents still garb their colorful traditional outfits – Kediya for men and ghaghras for women . The women sport a lot of jewelry and tattooes on their arms. Many are happy to strike a pose for you but some are camera-shy. Be sure to respect their privacy and ask them before clicking their picture!

Among the various famous places in Kutch, these are my recommended hamlets that you fit into your itinerary.  I have mentioned the distances of these villages from Bhuj as well as Dhordo Village – the latter being the place for Rann Utsav festival and Tent City.

Dhordo – the center of Rann Utsav Festival

Distance from Bhuj – 80 km

Dhordo is a village that is known for its for Mutwa art – which is an embroidery of Kutch done using a single stitch and may or may not involve mirror work. However, the bigger claim to fame for this village is that it is the site which hosts the three-month long Rann festival – from December to February.

During the Rann Utsav months, the entire focus shifts to the temporary carnival spot – The Tent City which is the tented accommodations created for visitors to the Rann of Kutch. There are art and craft stalls created in and around the Tent City that are given out to the heritage artisans from all over Kutch. The festive atmosphere is further enhanced by live folk performances and various other activities.

Thousands of visitors throng the village during the Rann Utsav. This festival and how to plan visiting it requires a complete blog post which I will be sharing soon. In the meanwhile, note that besides Bhuj, Dhordo is a base to visit the nearby places in Kutch.

Nirona Kutch

• Distance from Bhuj – 40 km
• Distance from Dhordo – 70 km

There are three unique art forms that Nirona is known for. The first is Rogan art –  a Persian art that is only practiced by the Khatri family in India. The cloth printing art involves the use of thickened castor oil with colors. The sole family has kept this form alive and has won national awards for it.

The 2 nd unique art is the Copper Bell Art practiced by the Luhar family. The craft initially was used to create cow bells with varying sounds using metals like copper but the ingenious family has now extended it to other metal artifacts including musical instruments and wind chimes. What makes these metal crafts amazing is that they are beaten into a desired shape and no screws are used to fix them together. Instead, they involve an interlocking mechanism which the family demonstrates on a visit.

The last but not the least is the lacquered wood art similar to the Channapatna toys found in Karnataka. Practiced by the Vardhas, you can see a live demonstration of how the local neem wood is polished into shape and decorated with vegetable colors to make the most fascinating kitchen equipment like ladles and spatulas. Of course, there are some amazing toys too!

Gandhi nu gam – a charming Kutch tourist attraction

• Distance from Bhuj – 70 km
• Distance from Dhordo – 29 km

The o riginal name of this village was Ludiya (Ludia). It was one of those places in Kutch that was completely destroyed by the Bhuj earthquake. The hamlet has literally risen from the rubble with the help of an NGO. Now called Gandhi nu Gam, it is home to the Meghwal community .

Gandhi nu gaam was one of those Kutch attractions that completely charmed me with its vibrant atmosphere. This is where you will see the most colorful bhungas that are not just home but double up as a workspace with the courtyard actively used as a shop front. From fashionable ghagras that can double up as skirts to mirrorwork dupattas, trendy traditional jewelry, stunning bags and purses and cotton bed covers and quilts – there is so much to shop for (and all very reasonable).

The one art form that you should keep an eye out for is the carved wood tables that are made completely by hand. One of the bhungas is a demonstration shop and the artisan will be more than happy to display his skill.

There is a resident who has made this village famous on the Indian postage stamp. The gorgeous Kheta Ben lives in the far end of the village and she shot to fame for her face was chosen as a portrait by the Indian postal department – under the theme of the traditional women of India. You can pay a visit to her and maybe even strike a pose with her – the last with a small purchase from her shop. Loved her cheeky entrepreneurship where she does not directly ask for money but requests you to buy something for that one picture.

Bhujodi Kutch

• Distance from Bhuj – 10 km
• Distance from Dhordo – 86 km

Known as the Weaver village of Kutch , Bhujodi is home to the best of handlooms that this region has to offer. In this over 500-year old village, you can find fashionable tie and dye fabrics, bandhani and block-printed designs – all done right from scratch. There are multiple places where one can witness live demonstrations of the same.

Ajrakhpur Village

• Distance from Bhuj – 14 km
• Distance from Dhordo – 90 km

Home to the Khatris, this village is renowned for the 3000-year old Ajarkh block printing . The art form came in with the earliest generation of Khatris who settled here from Sindh. What makes it unique is the use of natural colors like henna, indigo, pomegranate and even mud on the fabric. There is a 16-step process that you can witness when you visit Ajrakhpur and learn more about this form.

What makes the fabric worth your buy are not just the amazing designs but the fact that these will never run color! 

Hodka Village

• Distance from Bhuj – 65 km
• Distance from Dhordo – 18 km

Hodka village is another colorful hamlet with its bhungas. It is best known for its leather goods and quilts . The quilts made here are not just cozy but very decorative – thanks to the traditional embroidery of Kutch. You will also, find tons of mirror-work wall hangings (torans) and quirky jewelry on sale in this village.

Kalo Dungar (Black Hill) – the highest point in Kutch

• Distance from Bhuj – 97 km
• Distance from Dhordo – 48 km
• You can plan a visit to Gandhinugam – either before you arrive at Kalo Dungar or after you leave it. It almost, falls along the way .  

Literally translating to the “Black Hill ”, Kalo Dungar is the highest point in Kutch . At an elevation of 462 m above sea level, this is the place to get panoramic views of the Greater Rann of Kutch .

Kalo Dungar is located very close to the Indo-Pak border (which is only 40 km away) and is under the protection of the BSF (Border Security Force). On a bright and clear day, you can see the Hanuman temple which is close to the border of India and which was bombed during one of the Indo-Pak wars. On the day I visited, I even caught a glimpse of the last bridge – India Bridge from the peak.

Besides being a sunset and sunrise point, Kalo Dungar is home to a 400-year old Dattatreya temple that is attached to a legend. As the story goes, Lord Dattatreya met some hungry jackals at this hill and gave his body to them as food. Miraculously, his body kept regenerating the parts that the jackals ate. Even today, the temple has a separate feeding station for the jackals where the prasad of the evening aarti is kept.

When you visit the Kalo Dungar, you will see an active street market between the temple and the viewpoint area. Some interesting folk artists perform on the street and keep you entertained as you enjoy the mesmerizing views of the Rann of Kutch.

Kadiya Dhro – one of the offbeat attractions in the Rann of Kutch

• Distance from Dhordo – 80 km

It was an article on the internet that had first introduced Khadiya Dhro to me. Referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Gujarat”, I found myself comparing the landscape of the weathered rock to the other Grand Canyon in India that I had visited. The textured erosion and the placid river flowing through those hollows had really got me excited but unfortunately, it was not to be on this trip to Kutch.

You however, should plan to get here and try some hiking. The Tent City in Dhordo arranges for day trips to Kadiya Dhro.

Mandvi – adding a beach to the list of Kutch sightseeing places

• Distance from Bhuj – 58 km

 The beach town of Mandvi has one of the oldest ship-building yards in India and is home to the beautiful Vijay Vilas Palace built in the 1920s. The palace in particular, is renowned for its architecture which is a fusion of Rajasthani, Bengali and Kutchi styles. The palace has been a backdrop of many Bollywood movies.

Mandvi adds a different flavor to your Kutch places to visit with its beach activities . Consider an idyllic day by the shore with this destination. Besides the Palace, you should also, visit the Jinalaya Jain temple with its 72 shrines dedicated to the Jain tirthankaras.

Road to Heaven

This is the latest addition to the list of places to see in Kutch. The newly constructed road from Khavda cuts across the Arabian Sea and connects the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dholavira to Rann of Kutch. The reason I include this in a must-see Kutch attraction is the stunning views on either side of the road.

The 30 km stretch on one side has the Arabian sea while the other side has either the sea or its backwaters or the salt marsh of the Rann of Kutch. The seemingly endless road is perfect for a sunrise or a sunset drive – during which you can even spot amazing birds. In fact, it was on this road that I spotted the famous pink flamingoes in Kutch.

Dholavira – a must-visit historical place in Kutch

Much before it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 , Dholavira was on my eternal bucket list. The fascinating site was said to be the 2 nd largest discovery of Harappan ruins after the one in Pakistan.

Dholavira in Kutch is an archaeological marvel that provides insight into the ancient Indus Valley Civilization.  When you visit the site, you will see a well-planned urban infrastructure and advanced water conservation systems of that era. It was fascinating to see the excavated pipelines that took water to the upper city which is believed to have been occupied by the royalty.

I was fascinated with the various structures within the partially excavated site – which I believe is just 5% of what has been unveiled. The rest of the city still remains underground and is slowly being brought out.

The Dholavira Museum has the various articfacts that were found during the excavation. Don’t miss their audio visual tour – it definitely makes you appreciate this place better. Visiting Dholavira is definitely one of the best things to do in Kutch for history lovers.

Important Tip : The Road to Heaven is the best route to get to Dhola Vira from Dhordo. With this new road the Dholavira to Rann of Kutch distance has been reduced to 88 km (Dhordo).

Indian Wild Ass sanctuary at Bajana  – a key place to visit in the Little Rann of Kutch

So far, most of the top places to see in Kutch have been in the Greater Rann of Kutch. With the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary on your planned visit list, you will get a taste of the Banni grasslands and the Little Rann of Kutch.

The Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary is located at Bajana, near Surendranagar and is the only place in India where you can spot the endangered Asiatic Wild Ass. If you look at the picture, you might dismiss them as donkeys but they are far more than that. Known as Khur locally, they are strong and fast creatures that have resisted domestication. They for one can run at 70 kmph and actually create a sandstorm when they do.

Besides these unusual and underrated animals, you can also spot wolves, jackals, desert foxes and deer. The wetlands that you encounter on your jeep safari through the park is home to numerous birds – native and migratory. In fact, the variety that can be spotted here has brought several ornithologists from across the world to the sanctuary. On my quick visit, I spotted the bar headed geese and a variety of cranes as well as flamingoes.

The Greater Rann of Kutch is very close to the international border of India and hence, you do need Restricted Area Permits to visit the Rann of Kutch. You can avail these at the Bhirandiyara checkpost by showing your Passport or any other Government IDs like Aadhar Card. The permit costs are as below – – INR 100 per Indian adult and INR 50 for children between the ages of 6 and 12. – INR 500 for foreign nationals – INR 50 for a four-wheeler vehicle permit – INR 25 for a two-wheeler permit

Both individual and vehicle permits have to be obtained.

Recently, Indians can get these permits online through this website. Only one ID needs to be uploaded for the permit. However, all the travelers will have to still show their offline IDs along with the digital copy of the permit at the Bhirandiyara village checkpost.

What is the best way to get to the Rann of Kutch?

There are three ways of getting to the Rann of Kutch – By air, rail or road.

By Air: The nearest airport to Kutch is Bhuj. However, you only Mumbai to Bhuj flights. On a similar line, you have Kandla airport which is around 54 km from the Rann of Kutch. However, again with a limited connectivity, this is not used as much.

The other options that you can consider is Rajkot which is around 230 km from Bhuj. This has a better frequency of flights with a few direct international connections. You can just hire a cab to take you from Rajkot to Kutch by road.

The best connectivity by air is the Ahmedabad international airport. There are multiple flight options and lots of buses as well as cab availabilities to reach Kutch. The Ahmedabad to Kutch distance is around 335 km and it takes around 8 hours to travel that. By Rail:

Bhuj is the closest railway station to the Rann of Kutch .

By Road: There are plenty of cab transfers available from the bigger cities like Ahmedabad and Rajkot to Kutch. You can even rent a car or a bike to get to the Rann of Kutch. The highways are quite well developed and well lit till Bhuj. From Bhuj to Dhordo, you do have good roads but they are not lit at night.

Visiting Kutch is all about a road trip from your chosen base. Most of the places to visit in Kutch are at least 30 km from each other and the public buses between these places is not as frequent. Hence, it is advisable to have a transport with you at all times.

Which is the best time to visit the Rann of Kutch?

The best time to visit the Rann of Kutch is between November to February. From March onwards, the white salt marsh hardens and the beauty of it pales down during the scorching heat. Monsoons covers the marshland and submerges it till October.

The Rann Mahotsav is when the salt marsh comes alive with the vibrant cultural fiesta. This is a 3 month long festival held in Dhordo – starting in December. It is possibly the best time to visit Kutch and experience the traditional hospitality.

How many days is ideal to visit the Rann of Kutch?

Keep aside at least three days to visit the Greater Rann of Kutch and around one day for the Little Rann of Kutch. This just the minimum duration of stay. Depending on where you are coming from, you should set aside at least two days of complete travel to reach and leave Rann of Kutch.

Kutch is a district in the Indian state of Gujarat and is popular for its   Banni grasslands   with their seasonal   marshy   wetlands . It is beautiful yet peculiar location as most of Kutch is known for its dry lands which are submerged in shallow water during the rainy season. Most popularly, Kutch is known as The Rann Of Kutch because of its marshy   salt flats   which become snow white after the seasonal water that the land is submerged in dries up during the summer or winter. It is a beauty that you cannot experience anywhere else, it is the sheer majestic splendour of the place that it attracts tons of tourist gl obally. The salt flats make gives it a glossy look and makes it seem like an endless stretch of land in the horizon which has a different thrill in it. Quite rightly it is a great spot for a weekend getaway trip as it is an amalgamation of beauty and bewilderment.

How to reach Kutch?

By Air – The closes airport to Kutch is the Bhuj Airport which is located at a distance of about 70 km from the city centre and tourists can then take a cap to their destination location. However, the airport does not have great flight connectivity as it mainly connects to just major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. But tourist can also take a flight from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport which is located in Ahmadabad and has a regular connectivity both with all Indian cities as well as international cities.

By Train – The closest railhead is the Bhuj railway station and it certainly is the best way to reach Kutch as it is connected to all major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Kolkata, Jaipur and Pune via regular trains.

By Bus – Travelling by bus is also a great option as roads are well connected here and Bhuj has a great bus station which has many regular buses from major cities like Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Surat, and Baroda. Tourists have the option of both AC and NON-AC buses from both government and private bus service providers.

It is one of the oldest township area in Kutch which makes for a great historical tourism. Tourists can delve into time with the numerous old buildings many of which date back to the 18 th century along with beautiful old alleys and temples, parks and lakes. This is also of the main cities so weekend getaway trip cannot be a success without a visit to this city.

2) Aina Mahal –

It is an 18 th century building built in an Italian Gothic–style has now become one of the prime tourist spots in Kutch. Elaborately decorated with chandeliers, mirrors and semi-precious stones the building also has a religious Hindu temple in the courtyard which makes it both a historic extravaganza as well as a religious tour. Best Kutch trips have to have a visit to the Aina Mahal.

3) Dholavira –

It is amazing archaeological site. 6) Siyot Caves –

The caves are popularly known as Kateshwar Buddhist cave. This is a five rock cut-out cave near Village Siyot in Kutch district. Images of god Buddha a in various mudras are drawn on rock of this caves. It is a splendid place for historians and archaeologists.

7) Prag Mahal –

It is yet another old building in Bhuj and is thus a tourist spot. Built during the 18 th century it has some interesting architectural designs and from the top of the Mahal one can have a bird’s eye view of Bhuj. However, according to the city tour guide it is recommended that the trip to this place is clubbed with some other spot.

8) Kutch Museum –

It is the oldest museum in Kutch which is located near the Hamirsar Lake in Bhuj. The museum is divided into floors and it consists of various articles and artefacts from different historical eras. Some of which are stone writings from ancient times, obituaries of nobles and some superbly carved figures. Also figures of local tribes and their attire. Beautiful Bandhani clothes ranging from purses to large coats and sarees, small interesting beautifully artefacts like hairpins and vessels, some old coins and also old weapons used by the kings in ancient times. Among the many things to do at Kutch a visit to the museum is a must to enlighten and enrich you with the history of this beautiful place.

9) Vijay Villas Palace –

This place is one time summer palace of Jadeja Rajas of Kutch and is now a popular tourist location. The palace is surrounded by beautiful greenery and there is a private beach a few meters from the palace, the large hallways, and the dome shaped ceiling, the minute architectural designs all of which makes it a grand spot, as rightly associated to the Kings of the past. 10) Tera Fort –

It is one of the old forts in Kutch which is associated to the previous Royals of the place. The fort is located in the Tera village in the south-western side of Kutch. However, this historic site is not maintained well due to the constant tussle between the reaming members of the royal families.

11) Kanthkot Fort –

The fort is located on an isolated rocky hill and is surely one of the oldest forts in Kutch and may be in the whole of India. The fort was built even before the 8 th century and in the eighth century the fort is said to have been the capital of the   Kathis   and later on to have been taken by the   Chavdas.   Middle of the tenth century, under the name Kanthadurg the Chaulukya   king   Mularaja  left. It was after the fifteenth century during the rule of Jadejas; Kanthkot was given as an estate to Dedaji. In 1816, it surrendered to a British; however the Jadejas still ruled it till the Independence in 1947.

Thus this fort is an epitome of history, not only of the colonial history but it goes way beyond that. However, the fort is not in a very well condition but a visit to this will broaden your understandings of our historical past.

Religious places

12) shri swaminarayan mandir –.

The temple is devoted to Swami Narayan who is believed to be an embodiment of Lord Vishnu. Idols of other Hindu Goddesses and Gods were also seen in the temple. The temple is built in the recent times, with marvellous modern architecture. The idols in the temple are mostly made with marble which gives it a more graceful and divine look. The temple is supervised by the Nar Narayan Dev Gadi of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, a part of Hinduism.

13) Ma Ashapura Temple –

The temple is dedicated to Mata Ashapura is Kuldevi of the Jadejas / Rajputs who ruled this city. Tourists also need to visit Mata Na Madh which is situated near Panandro Mines of coal.

14) Bhadreshwar Jain Temple –

The temple is also known as the Vasai Jain Temple which is located in the Bhadreshwar village of Mundra Taluka. 15) Tapkeshwari Temple –

16) Ambe Dham Temple –

It is a small temple dedicated to Goddess Ambika (Ambe) which is 15-20 minutes from Mandvi. The intricate designs inside the temple are just amazing with all the golden mirror work done on the dome interior.

There is also a food court, exhibition hall, replica of Holy Vaishnaodevi Shrine complete with hill structure, and large garden, it attracts large numbers of devotees and tourists as well. Thus visiting this newly built temple is a must thing to do to make it the best Kutch trip.

17) Koteshwar Mahadev Temple –

The temple is an amazing Shiva temple. The temple is more famous for the mythological stories that the temple is associated with which the locals or the tour guide will tell you. 18) kalo dungar –.

Kalo Dungar is also popularly known as the “Black Hill”. It is the highest point in the region at a height of 462 meters. Tourists flock to this location to enjoy the mesmerising view of nature that one can witness from top of the hill. It is like a bird’s eye view of the village and the Rann of Kutch which can be seen at a distance.

1. Vijaya Villas Palace

Vijaya Vilas Palace, named after Yuvraj Shri Vijayaraj, the heir of this kingdom, is one of Kutch’s most popular attractions. This palace is made of red sandstone and features some of the most exquisite stone carvings and tile work. Dholavira, also known as Kotada Timba, is a heritage site in the Kutch region where the Archeological Survey of India discovered remains of the Harappan civilization. In fact, relics from all stages of the Harappan timeline (2900 BC to 1500 BC) have been discovered here.

It is spread over 100 hectares of land and shows continuous evolution. Dholavira has been studied and some interesting facts about the Harappan Civilization have been revealed. The Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary, located near the buried 5000-year-old Harappan city of Dholavira, also contains numerous fossils.

8. Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary

The Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, situated in the Little Rann of Kutch, is India’s largest wildlife sanctuary, spanning 4954 square kilometers. Moreover, It is home to a diverse range of predators, animals, and birds. This sanctuary is also well recognized for the endangered Indian wild ass species Khur and the Asiatic wild ass species Oranger. Other animals, reptiles, and amphibians can also be found in this region.

As the oldest museum in the state of Gujarat, the Kutch Museum is another one of the places to visit in Kutch for those that love to learn about history and culture.

From Kshatrapa inscriptions to tribal artefacts and diverse folk arts and crafts, this museum has a nice variety of artefacts and relics to look at and learn from, some even dating all the way back to the 1 st Century. Although the museum itself isn’t all that large, the huge collection more than makes up for it.

How about swapping a museum visit for an adventure into an archaeological treasure? 

When it comes to one of the best historical places to visit in Kutch, nothing quite rivals Dholavira – a glimpse into one of the earliest civilisations on the planet. The site allows you to wander through the remains of a once-bustling ancient city from the Harappan era, letting you get a peek into days long past. 

Check out the well-preserved street plans, the nifty water systems they had going on, and the bits and pieces that reveal just how Dholavira was a testament to human creativity and the story of yesteryears. Imagine taking a time machine as you roam the intricate passages, check out the water reservoirs, and gawk at the jaw-dropping structures that tell tales of folks who lived there nearly 4,000 years ago. Whether you’re a history buff or just up for an offbeat adventure, Dholavira ranks high on the must-see list in Kutch.

7. Bhadreshwar Jain Temple

Bhadreshwar Jain Temple is one of Bhadravati’s most ancient temples and certainly one of the best places to see Kutch. The building is currently being rebuilt and completely transformed into a new complex. The main temple is quite magnificent, made entirely of white marble. It also has beautiful architecture with etched pillars displaying great artwork. There are 52 minor monuments, graves, and two-century-old mosques that surround the great temple.

8. Kalo Dungar

Kalo Dungar, also known as Black Hill, looms to the north of Khavda village, securing the title of the highest point in Kutch at 462 meters. From this vantage point, you’re in for breathtaking vistas of the Great Rann salt flat or an inland sea if you happen to drop by during the monsoon. Getting there demands your own means of transportation, however. The hill is also renowned for its 400-year-old shrine dedicated to Lord Dattatreya. As you ascend to the hill’s summit, a panoramic view unfolds over the expansive, bleached landscape.

The hues shift with the passage of time and the setting sun behind the mountains. A brief 15-minute ride from the hill’s base will lead you to the India Bridge, linking the northernmost part of Kutch to the mainland. Do note that this area falls under military jurisdiction, and photography is not allowed.

Whether it’s a trip to the Rann of Kutch, a stunning white-sand and salt desert, or to the location of the historic Dholavira ruins, Kutch has something delightful to offer every tourist.
