Los Cabos Travel Guide

place travel mexico los cabos

Located at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, Los Cabos consists of three distinct areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, and the coastal highway between them, referred to as the Tourist Corridor. The popular destination is served by San José del Cabo International Airport which is located about three miles from San José del Cabo and about twenty miles from Cabo San Lucas.

Los Cabos is a combination of desert, beachfront, and mountain terrain, with the Pacific Ocean on the west side of the peninsula and the Gulf of California, also called the Sea of Cortés, on the east. The warm, dry, sunny climate and beautiful scenery have turned the former fishing village into the home of hundreds of resorts, hotels, and vacation homes from Cabo San Lucas up to a newly developing coastal area north of the airport called the East Cape.

Sportfishing, snorkeling, swimming, diving, sailing, and surfing are among favorite water sports, and on land, visitors play golf and tennis, explore the desert and beach terrain on dune buggies, hike, and ride mountain bikes, horses, and camels. Guests enjoy lively nightlife and dine at top restaurants or casual cafés.

Best Time to Go

Temperatures are warm year round, with August the hottest month (75 to 92 degrees F) and January and February the coldest (54 to 79 degrees F). For perfect weather with temperatures from the mid 70s to mid 80s as well as a getaway from colder climates, November through April are high season months, and prices reflect the demand.

April and May are the driest months with practically no rain at all, and in May and June, the temperatures get well into the 80s, and you'll probably want to be near a beach or pool enjoying the sunny weather.

Late July, August, and September are the warmest months with higher humidity, and the wettest months are August and September averaging about two to three inches of rain. Hurricanes are possible during those months, but they are relatively rare. For avoiding crowds and high prices, a late summer visit could be worth considering.

Whale watching season runs from about December through April, with humpbacks frequently seen during that time of their migration. In February, the calves (baby whales) become active. The gray whale season is from January through March. Boat trips to see the whales up close are very popular during that time.

The Festival of San José, patron saint of San José del Cabo, takes place from March 14 to 19, with parades, carnivals, dancing, food, parties, traditional costumes, entertainment, and music. Sportfishing tournaments are held in October and November. Music and film festivals, food and wine events, competitions, and religious holidays fill the calendar all year long in Los Cabos.

Things to Know

The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortés meet at the southern tip of Baja where El Arco (The Arch), a rock formation, rises from the sea. The surf on the Pacific side is quite rough, and the Sea of Cortés is calm, although there can be strong currents. Before jumping in, be sure you're at a safe swimmable beach.

Timeshare sales people at the airport can be quite aggressive as you pass, and drivers will approach offering to take you to your hotel. It's advisable to arrange transportation in advance through your hotel or a reliable local service .

Although the currency is the Mexican peso, U.S. dollars and major credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. It is possible to obtain pesos at the airport upon arrival, through ATMs, or at some hotels.

Tipping is customary in Mexico at bars, restaurants, spas, and at hotels for assistance with bags or other services. It is considerate to leave something for hotel housekeepers each day. Tour guides should also receive a gratuity. At restaurants and spas, the typical amount is 10-20%. For others, the equivalent of what you would leave in the U.S. is appropriate.

How to Get Around

Taxis: Taxis are available at hotels and at the airport. In San José del Cabo, red and yellow taxi vans operate and in Cabo San Lucas, the vans are blue and green—they operate 24 hours a day. From the airport, Los Cabos has an official taxi provider. The fare between the two cities is about $60-$70.

Buses: The Suburcabos buses run between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo every day from about 5:00 a.m. in San José and about 5:20 a.m. in Cabo. They run about every 20 minutes until approximately 9:30 p.m.

Airport Transportation: Car rentals , private companies, shuttles, and taxis provide transportation from the airport. Note that Uber is not permitted at the airport, and it is illegal in Cabo, although it may be operating.

The Perfect Cabo Itinerary: 3, 5 or 7 Days in Los Cabos

By: Author Janice and George

Posted on Last updated: April 30, 2024

Categories Tips

Home / Tips

So you’re ready for a getaway in paradise and Cabo San Lucas is calling your name? We totally get it!

We’ve heard the call ourselves (many times, in fact!), which is why we keep making our way back there. We just love going to Cabo and we’re excited to share our recommendations with you.

We have some Cabo itinerary options for you that you can adapt to your liking – whether your Cabo trip planning is for a quick 3-day escape, or you’re able to take it slower and soak up the sun for 5 days in Cabo (or even a week).

No matter what you have time for, though, you’re in for an amazing vacation.

So, let’s plunge right in and see what’s in store!

Every Cabo itinerary must include a visit to Land's End!

Cabo itinerary

We’ve crafted this as a 5-day Cabo itinerary.

But you can easily shorten it and make it work for a long weekend in Cabo (i.e., 3 days in Cabo San Lucas).

Or, if you have a week or more and want to know what to do in Cabo San Lucas (or Los Cabos) for a longer vacation (i.e., 7 days in Cabo), consider adding some of the additional day trips listed at the end of this Cabo travel guide .

Day 1 – Arriving in Cabo

Upon arriving at the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), we always reserve a Cabo airport shuttle in advance instead of taking a taxi, and we highly recommend you do the same.

It’s less expensive and also offers better service.

The cheapest airport transfers that we’ve found are with Gray Line Los Cabos ($37 per person roundtrip) for shared airport transportation in a mini-van or SUV to and from your hotel in Cabo San Lucas.

The cheapest private airport shuttle for a group of up to 5 passengers in a van is $139 with Legacy Transportation (roundtrip transfers).

Once you’ve settled into your hotel, you’ll probably just want to take it easy and relax by the pool or check out the resort’s amenities. There’s no need to rush on your first day – remember, you’re in paradise now!

Day 2 – Beach and Land’s End

Morning: take a boat ride to land’s end.

The best way to start your second day is with one of our favorite Cabo activities – an all-clear boat trip to Land’s End . (Or you can just hop on a regular water taxi boat.)

This is a great way to take in the breathtaking natural beauty of the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas .

There’s a colony of raucous sea lions that call the area around the Arch home, so have your camera ready!

The last stop of the boat tour is Lover’s Beach.

It’s the ideal spot to relax on the creamy golden sand, surrounded by stunning rock formations.

Known locally as Playa del Amor, Lover's Beach in Cabo San Lucas can only be easily reached by boat.

If you’ve brought snorkel gear, you can snorkel in the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez – the water is usually calm, especially in the mornings.

Most glass-bottom boat tours and water taxi rides will drop you off at Lover’s Beach for an hour or so, then pick you up later.

Ask your boat captain if you can do this. (There may be a small extra charge.)

Afternoon: Hit the beach!

After exploring Land’s End, head to one of the many beautiful beaches in Cabo .

Medano Beach is a popular choice, known for its lively atmosphere and various beach clubs . You can indulge in water activities like jet skiing or parasailing, or simply kick back and soak up the sun.

Evening: Enjoy a sunset cruise

Friends toast the sunset on a sunset cruise in Cabo San Lucas.

Finish your day with a memorable sunset cruise .

If you haven’t already taken a boat ride to Land’s End, a cruise is the best way to enjoy the stunning coastal views during this magical time of day.

One of our favorite sunset cruises for a chilled evening is this 5-star-rated sailing tour with Cabo Sailing .

It’s quite classy and intimate. Sip on a refreshing cocktail or a glass of chilled Chardonnay as you witness the kaleidoscopic show of pink, orange and golden colors as the sun dips below the horizon.

We told you this was paradise! The sound of the sails luffing in the breeze just adds to the magic.

Day 3 – Whale watching and/or other Cabo San Lucas activities

Morning: go whale watching (in season).

Now that you’re relaxed after spending time on the beach yesterday, you’re probably ready for some activities.

This morning, you’re going on a whale watching excursion .

Yep, whale watching is one of the best things to do in Cabo and shouldn’t be missed!

If you’re there in the winter months, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the majestic whales in their natural habitat.

The Cabo whale watching season runs from around mid-December to mid-April, and you can see different types of whales during different times.

For instance, the best time to see humpback whales is between late December and the end of January (although adorable baby humpbacks start appearing in February).

Meanwhile, you have an excellent chance of seeing gray whales between early January and March.

Afternoon: Go camel riding, golfing or ziplining

If you’re feeling energetic and up for more adventure, there are several options to choose from.

They each give you a different take on the best of Cabo and are worth doing. Pick your pleasure.

Camel riding

Yes, you read that right!

Camel riding is one of those unique things to do in Cabo that probably never crossed your mind. But it doesn’t get more fun than riding one of these woolly creatures while exploring some of the Baja Peninsula’s natural beauty.

You can book a camel riding tour at an oceanfront ranch on a wild and pristine stretch of the Pacific Ocean coastline (you’ll get to ride your camel along the beach).

The tour includes return transportation, a Mexican lunch and tequila tasting at the end.

Golfing in Cabo

Calling all golf enthusiasts!

If you’re looking for the perfect golfing experience in Cabo San Lucas, you’re in luck.

With over a dozen championship golf courses to choose from, Cabo is a golfer’s paradise.

Many of these courses are consistently ranked among the top 100 in the world by esteemed publications like Golf Digest and Golf Magazine and have been designed by golf legends like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf and Tiger Woods.

You can bet that teeing off at any of these will be an experience to remember!

Desert golf course in Los Cabos

Here’s a list of 5 top Cabo golf courses that are open to the public:

  • Puerto Los Cabos: Located on the East Cape near San Jose del Cabo, Puerto Los Cabos is a golf resort that features three distinct 9-hole courses designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. Each course boasts its own delightful “culinary palapa” complete with a chef and bartender.
  • Cabo Real Golf Club: This course, expertly designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., has become a must-play for every golfer visiting Cabo. The front nine holes of the Cabo Real Golf Club offer sweeping ocean views and forgiving fairways, while holes on the challenging back nine wind through desert terrain, testing your skills. Keep an eye out for the elevated green on the 14th hole, perched at a 500-foot rise above sea level.
  • Diamante’s Dunes: This beauty is a private golf course designed by Davis Love III. With its towering sand dunes, coastal winds, ocean vistas, and split fairways, this course is an absolute gem. Although Diamante’s Dunes is primarily exclusive to Diamante hotel guests, some tee times are available for non-guests.
  • Cabo Del Sol Cove Club Golf Course: Nestled along the stunning Sea of Cortez, the Cabo Del Sol Cove Club Golf Course , previously known as the Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course, offers a remarkable golfing experience. The 3-hole finish guarantees jaw-dropping views.
  • Palmilla Golf Club: Designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, Palmilla Golf Cub has wide fairways, over 80 bunkers and tees situated on their own grassy islands surrounded by desert vegetation. The service at Palmilla Golf Club is outstanding, and there are plenty of opps to capture stunning photos amidst the scenic surroundings.

Another exhilarating option is to go ziplining at Canopy Costa Azul .

There are actually three ziplining operators in Los Cabos. But Costa Azul Ziplines is a good choice for a 3-hour tour that you can easily squeeze into your itinerary for Cabo San Lucas.

On this tour, you’ll soar through the air on a series of seven thrilling ziplines. Bonus: You cross a wobbly suspension bridge and get to rappel down a 200-foot mountain wall too.

Afternoon alternative: Wander the Cabo San Lucas Marina

If you’d prefer a more leisurely afternoon, hang around the Cabo San Lucas Marina after your whale watching tour and enjoy a nice stroll.

Ogle the striking white pleasure boats and mega-yachts, check out the pelicans that snooze on the docks and soak up the maritime ambience.

White yachts and fishing boats in the Cabo San Lucas Marina

Also go souvenir shopping at the many shops and stalls that offer a variety of unique gifts, artwork and local crafts.

Evening: Dine at one of Cabo’s many great restaurants

Have you worked up an appetite?

After your adventures today, you’ll be ready to indulge in some great dining at one of Cabo’s many excellent restaurants.

For a taste of Italy, try Salvatore G’s or Il Forno , two of our favorite Italian restaurants in Cabo San Lucas .

If you’re in the mood for high-end seafood, you can’t go wrong with El Farallon .

For breathtaking sunset views and a romantic setting, Sunset Monalisa is the perfect choice.

If you want something more casual, you’ll love tasting the best tacos in Cabo San Lucas.

Fresh shrimp tacos don’t get much better than the ones you find in Cabo!

After dinner, if you’re up for some nightlife, Cabo San Lucas has an electric bar and clubbing scene (especially in the winter high season).

Dance the night away at popular venues like The Giggling Marlin , Mandala or El Squid Roe , where you can enjoy live music, drinks and a buzzy atmosphere.

Day 4 – San Jose del Cabo

Morning: explore san jose del cabo.

A restaurant with pink chairs in a pretty courtyard in San Jose del Cabo

We really love San Jose del Cabo – it’s quaint and very different from Cabo San Lucas .

While both towns make up the municipality of Los Cabos in the state of Baja California Sur – and are just a short drive away from each other – they’re not alike in look and feel.

For one, San Jose del Cabo does not have the bustling energy of Cabo San Lucas (it’s not a Spring Break mecca, for example).

San Jose del Cabo is also a much smaller city and 250 years older. Cobblestone streets and colonial architecture give the city center a much more traditional, small-town Mexican feel.

Take some time to explore the historic downtown area, visit the Mission San José del Cabo Church and browse the art galleries showcasing works by local and international artists.

Visitors stroll the streets of San Jose del Cabo.

If you’ve rented a car in Cabo , there’s also the Tourist Corridor that you may want to explore on your way from Cabo San Lucas.

It’s a 20-mile stretch between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, lined with gorgeous beaches, luxury resorts and world-class golf courses.

Lunch: Savor a farm-to-table experience

Beyond the fancy resorts and fun activities, Cabo offers unique farm-to-table experiences that celebrate the region’s rich agricultural heritage.

Cabo is developing a well-deserved reputation for its organic farms, local markets and innovative restaurants, making it somewhat of a foodie’s paradise.

One of our favorite farm-to-table restaurants in Cabo is Flora Farms.

The first in the farm-to-table biz, this 25-acre organic farm is home to a magical outdoor restaurant called Flora Fields Restaurant . It’s one of the best restaurants in Los Cabos!

It serves up mouth-watering wood-fired pizzas, farm-fresh salads, home-cooked comfort food like grilled pork chops and fried chicken (organic, of course!) and amazing cocktails.

Flora Farms cocktail

We also love Acre , nestled in the foothills of San Jose del Cabo (very close to Flora Farms), featuring towering palm trees and twinkling lights.

More sophisticated than Flora Farms, their menu is awesome and features dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.

Be sure to order one or more of their signature craft cocktails, also made with ingredients sourced from their own garden. Their ginger mezcalitas are especially yummy. (We know, we’ve sipped a few of these!)

Evening: Join the Art Walk

If your trip sees you in Cabo on a Thursday night between November and June, we highly recommend you join the Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo .

During this popular cultural event, art galleries open their doors to visitors (often serving complimentary wine) and there are wandering musicians and performers.

It’s a magical evening of strolling the streets (which are closed to traffic), admiring unique artwork and immersing yourself in the local art scene.

Day 4 – Water activities and spa

Morning: go snorkeling, scuba diving or kayaking.

the PezGato sailing tour boat gets ready to leave the marina for an afternoon of snorkeling fun.

One thing’s for sure, there’s no shortage of water activities in Cabo .

Kick-start your morning with a kayaking and snorkeling tour to Santa Maria Bay and Chileno Bay.

These two pristine bays are known for their stunning underwater ecosystems.

If you prefer a luxurious sailing and snorkeling trip, we recommend this Los Cabos luxury snorkel and lunch cruise .

On this small-group tour (for up to 16 people), you first cruise by the iconic Arch, then sail to either Santa Maria or Chileno Bay for snorkeling and stand-up paddleboarding.

Lounge on cushions on the sailboat deck, while sipping on specialty cocktails and sparkling wine from the open bar.

Also savor a delicious lunch featuring fresh grilled shrimp and seafood ceviche.

Towels, snorkeling gear and SUP boards are included, and during winter, you may see whales and playful manta rays.

If you’re traveling with a group of family or friends, you might like a private yacht charter .

For scuba diving enthusiasts, explore the depths of Cabo’s underwater wonderland at some of the best scuba diving sites around.

place travel mexico los cabos

Beginners will love the easy dive sites just a short boat ride away from town – there’s actually some excellent easy diving at Land’s End.

More advanced divers can take advantage of some of the best marine life by exploring some offshore walls.

Afternoon: Get pampered at a spa

After an adventurous morning, it’s time to treat yourself to some resort-style pampering.

Cabo has some of the finest spas around.

Not surprisingly, the most luxurious ones are found in the high-end resorts – and the best part is you don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy their services.

Here are three of our favorites:

  • Waldorf Astoria Spa : Immerse yourself in a world of relaxation and tranquility at this exquisite 12,000-square-foot spa, where all treatments start with an herb-and-lime foot scrub.
  • Jasha Spa (at the JW Marriott Los Cabos) : This sophisticated spa features 12 treatment rooms, indoor vitality pools and an outdoor co-ed hydrotherapy circuit and garden. The couples massages are excellent.
  • The Spa at Esperanza : Find serenity and well-being at this lovely indoor-outdoor spa, complete with a steam cave, beach cabanas for massages and outdoor showers. Skilled therapists pamper you with indigenous treatments that use local botanical plants and seaweed.

Day 5 – Todos Santos day trip

Shop in Todos Santos

On the last day of your 5-day Cabo San Lucas itinerary, we recommend exploring beyond Cabo and doing a day trip to Todos Santos – one of Mexico’s Pueblo Magicos .

Like many people, we love this charming town, known for its thriving arts scene, boutique hotels , cultural heritage and wild secluded beaches .

Getting to Todos Santos

The easiest and best way to reach Todos Santos is by renting a car, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

We’ve used and recommend using Discover Cars , a price comparison and booking website that searches top car rental agencies like Avis, Hertz, Budget, and Alamo to find the best prices.

Morning: Explore Todos Santos

There’s a lot to explore here, from its vibrant streets adorned with colorful murals to upscale art galleries showcasing local talent.

Pop into the Profesor Nestor Agundez Martinez Cultural Center (a local history museum) and check out the Hotel California.

Take your time to wander and discover its hidden gems.

Lunch in Todos Santos

Our favorite is The Green Room , a lovely beachfront spot that offers delicious dishes while you enjoy panoramic ocean views.

Grilled shrimp appetizer at The Green Room in Todos Santos

Another favorite is Oystera . For fresh seafood lovers, this place can’t be beat!

More things to do if you have one week in Cabo

There are many great day trips from Cabo that you can do.

If you have plenty of time on your vacay, consider the following day trip options, all of which we’ve greatly enjoyed.

Day trip to Cabo Pulmo

It’s well worth adding a Cabo Pulmo day trip to your Cabo San Lucas vacation itinerary if you have more time.

Cabo Pulmo is located about 60 miles northeast of Cabo San Lucas and takes you out of the bustling resort town vibe and into the serene East Cape region.

The natural beauty of Cabo Pulmo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is really quite special. Snorkel or dive in the crystal-clear waters, home to colorful coral reefs and marine life galore.

Sea lions at Cabo Pulmo

The drive to get there involves a stretch of dirt road at the end. So you may prefer to go on a tour, rather than drive there yourself.

Here’s a 5-star-rated private jeep tour from Cabo San Lucas. It includes snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo and lunch.

Hike to the Sol de Mayo Waterfall

Another option if you’re spending one week in Cabo San Lucas is to take a hike in the Canyon of the Fox to the Sol de Mayo Waterfall, located just beyond the village of Santiago.

It’s set in the Sierra de la Laguna mountains , and the mountain scenery is gorgeous. Pine woods are intersected by canyons, through which riverbeds and streams meander.

It’s a stark contrast to Los Cabos’ typical ocean and desert vistas!

place travel mexico los cabos

And a swim in the cool waters of the idyllic swimming hole at the base of the waterfall is always a treat after working up a sweat on the trail.

The hike to the waterfall is moderately difficult. It’s not long but there are some steep sections and you need to be comfortable with hiking on a rocky and uneven trail.

We recommend going on a guided hiking day tour .

Snorkel with whale sharks at La Paz (in season)

Take a day trip to La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur to discover stunning beaches and do one of our most memorable activities of all time – swimming with the La Paz whale sharks !

Mouth of a whale shark

The Bay of La Paz in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez is one of the few places left in the world where you can swim with these gentle giants, so we highly recommend taking advantage of this surreal opportunity.

Where to stay in Cabo

When figuring out where to stay in Cabo , there are plenty of options.

From luxury resorts and hotels with swimmable beaches to family-friendly resorts, all-inclusives and lovely boutique hotels , you’ll find it all.

The following are our hand-picked suggestions. We’ve stayed at all of these hotels (except Chileno Bay and Mar del Cabo, which we’ve inspected on media hotel visits).

Best luxury resorts in Cabo

One&Only Palmilla dining

We especially love the One&Only Palmilla for their incredible service (hello, private butlers!), gorgeous Mexican colonial architecture and swimmable beach.

It’s really one-of-a-kind. (See our One&Only Palmilla review .)

Then again, we also love the five-star Chileno Bay Resort & Residences with their three-tiered pool, luxurious contemporary rooms and snorkeling beach right out front.

The fabulous pool at Chileno Bay Resort & Residences

Best resorts for families in Cabo

The side-by-side Pueblo Bonito Rose and Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos are lovely condo-style resorts with kitchenettes.

Right on beautiful Medano Beach, they feature top-notch amenities and breathtaking ocean views.

Pink beach chairs in front of the side-by-side Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos and Pueblo Bonito Rose resorts on Medano Beach

Another plus: Their location makes it easy to get around in Cabo . They’re walking distance to the Cabo San Lucas Marina (and boat tours that leave from there), as well as restaurants, shops and the movie theater in town.

This makes these two resorts especially great for families with teenagers, as the teens can have some independence going into town.

Psst! You don’t need to get the all-inclusive option if you stay here, as you have so many eateries in town at your fingertips!

Best all-inclusive resort in Cabo

For a first time visit to Cabo San Lucas, you may want to stay at an all-inclusive resort which takes care of everything.

It doesn’t get much better than the Grand Velas Los Cabos . Think luxurious accommodations (minimum 1,200 square feet), gourmet dining, pool butlers, top-shelf drinks and a divine spa.

There’s no reason to leave here. And we didn’t.

Best mid-priced boutique hotel

Step into the picturesque paradise of Mar del Cabo !

It’s the perfect spot to immerse yourself in Instagrammable beauty (fuchsia bougainvillea abounds!) and have a beach break without breaking the bank. (Note: Its beach isn’t swimmable, however.)

Beach in front of Mar del Cabo, Los Cabos

Best all-inclusive resorts for adults

You’ll find some amazing all-inclusive Cabo resorts for adults only .

We really liked staying at Pueblo Bonito Pacifico . It’s got you covered with its all-inclusive perks, stunning ocean views and a lively vibe. Here it’s all about relaxation, luxury and a whole lot of “adulting” done right!

It’s not as high-end as the Grand Velas Los Cabos, listed above. But it has a very Zen feel – and pretty well all guests are couples.

A brand new all-inclusive just for adults is the Grand Velas Boutique Hotel . If it’s anything like the neighboring Grand Velas Los Cabos (which is for everyone), the adults-only boutique Grand Velas should be pretty swank.

Best boutique hotel in San Jose del Cabo

Overlooking the Puerto Los Cabos Marina, Hotel El Ganzo has rooms with views of dive-bombing pelicans and fishing boats coming and going.

And it features an underground recording studio and a rooftop infinity pool with glorious views. What’s not to love?

Oh, and it’s adults-only too.

A complimentary water taxi boat takes guests from Hotel El Ganzo to their beach club across the marina.

Frequently asked Cabo San Lucas itinerary questions

How many days do you need in cabo.

The ideal time frame is at least 4 days in Cabo.

This gives you enough time to explore some popular tourist highlights, try some of the many available activities and also have enough time to just relax on the beach.

If you can spend 5 days in Los Cabos, that’s even better. You can then devote of couple of days to exploring beyond the immediate Cabo San Lucas surroundings.

When is the best time to go to Cabo?

Cabo San Lucas is great to visit any time of the year.

The one exception is maybe August and September, which is very hot and humid. (Mind you, if you love sportfishing, September is one of the best months to visit Los Cabos .)

Keep in mind that peak tourist season is from December to April when the weather is at its best – warm and dry.

Cabo’s rainy season is technically in the summer, with the most rainfall happening in August and September (which is in the “official” hurricane season). The low season is July to September.

Personally, we love Cabo San Lucas in November because the ocean water is warm for all water sports.

But we tend to go more often to Cabo San Lucas in January (and late December), as we join other family members then.

These months also happen to be the least rainy months of the year and the weather is pretty much perfect (not too hot).

A lot of other people also think December and January are great months to visit Los Cabo, so be sure to book your hotel accommodations in advance.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds and even cash in some great deals, the shoulder season months of May to June or October are your best bet.

Is it safe to visit Cabo San Lucas?

Yes, Cabo San Lucas is generally safe for tourists.

It’s a popular vacation spot that gets many visitors every year, and Mexican officials have done a good job of keeping it monitored and relatively crime free.

But, like you would with any place you travel, always use common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

Stick to well-traveled areas, use legit transportation options and keep an eye on your belongings.

The local authorities and resorts in Cabo take safety seriously and work hard to make sure visitors have a great time without any worries.

That’s a wrap for the ultimate Los Cabos itinerary!

There you have it… Your ultimate 3-, 5- or 7-day Cabo itinerary!

You’re all set now for embarking on a wonderful getaway in one of Mexico’s most popular sand-and-sea destinations. All that’s left is to pack your bags , slip into vacation mode and let the fun begin!

If you’re like us, your first trip to Cabo certainly won’t be your last. It always finds a way to lure us back in, and we have no doubt you’ll easily see why.

Los Cabos – or just “Cabo” – is a popular Mexican resort area at the tip of Baja California, and one of our favorite places to go in Mexico for sea and sun. With a coastline that takes in the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez, Cabo is best known for its fine beaches, luxury hotels, beautiful desert scenery, surfing, and vibrant beach, dining, and nightclub scene.

Frequently Asked Questions about Los Cabos

Where is los cabos.

Los Cabos is a municipality at the southern tip of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Bordering the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Sea of Cortez (or Gulf of California) to the east, it comprises the two resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, separated by the 32 km “Corridor” of resorts and posh condos.

Cabo San Lucas lies about 160 km south of La Paz, and 1625 km south of Tijuana and the US border. Non-stop flights to Los Cabos International Airport take just over 3 hours from San Francisco, 2 hours 35 minutes from Houston, 2 hours 15 minutes from Los Angeles, just over 2 hours from Mexico City and Tijuana, and 1.5 hours from Guadalajara.

How big is Los Cabos?

Los Cabos has a greater metro population of almost 288,000. Cabo San Lucas itself has a population of around 81,000, while San José del Cabo has around 93,000 inhabitants.

What is the history of Los Cabos?

Originally the home of the indigenous Pericú people, the first official Spanish attempt to colonize Los Cabos began in 1730. In that year San José del Cabo was founded as a Catholic mission by Jesuits, on the site of a Pericú village – it was destroyed in the Pericú Revolt four years later, and over the next hundred years, the location of the mission and settlement was re-located several times. Meantime, diseases virtually wiped out the Pericú.

In the 19th century, San José developed into a small port and agricultural center, while Cabo San Lucas remained a tiny village frequented by pirates and smugglers. In the 1940s writer, John Steinbeck sailed along the Baja coast, recording his journey in The Log from the Sea of Cortez – he called Cabo San Lucas a “sad little town”. There was a tuna cannery here and little else, and the road connecting the two settlements wasn’t finished until 1970. In the 1980s everything changed when the Mexican government began developing the region as a major international resort and cruise destination – today millions of North Americans vacation here annually.

How do I get to Los Cabos?

Los Cabos International Airport is connected to the US and Canada by numerous non-stop flights; flights take anywhere from 2 hours 15 minutes to 8 hours, depending on the destination. Most domestic flights link Cabo with Mexico City.

Because of its relatively remote location, getting here overland can be very time-consuming. First-class long-distance buses run down the Baja peninsula from Tijuana (at least 28 hours to Cabo San Lucas) via La Paz (2 hours 30 minutes), though these can be infrequent.

Santa Maria beach Cabo

Beautiful Santa Maria Beach is a sheltered beach with calm swimming and snorkeling areas.

What are the options for Cabo airport transportation?

Los Cabos International Airport lies 19km north of downtown San José del Cabo and a further 32km from Cabo San Lucas. All the major car rental companies have desks here; otherwise, reserve a taxi or shared minibus in advance with Transportistas Josefinos , Cabo Transfers , or Los Cabos Airport Shuttle . Airport taxis are available on arrival, but are very expensive and will try and charge US dollars – local buses are a cheaper alternative, but not recommended with luggage.

Can I use Uber in Los Cabos?

Using Uber in Los Cabos is complicated. Uber cars are available (assuming phones have roaming, and the app works), but they are technically operating illegally, without government approval (as of August 2020). It’s definitely not possible to catch an Uber at the airport. Local taxi cartels have aggressively fought to keep Uber out of Los Cabos – until the situation is stabilized, it’s best to make other arrangements.

Can I drive to Los Cabos?

It’s possible to drive to Los Cabos. Driving down from the US border is relatively straightforward, and plenty of Americans and Canadians take their own vehicles – the main highway is good, virtually empty outside the towns, and is fairly safe (though driving at night should be avoided). There are many Mexican army checkpoints along the way, but tourists are usually waved through without problems.

It’s important to fill up whenever a gas station is seen and plan accordingly. The drive is over 1,625 km (1,010 miles) and takes around 24 hours non-stop – most folks break the journey into two or three days. Another plus: foreign vehicles do not need a Mexican “Temporary Importation of Vehicle Permit”, as long as they stay on the Baja peninsula.

If renting a vehicle, it’s much easier to do this once across the Mexican border, as taking US rental vehicles into Mexico comes with all sorts of restrictions.

Do I need to rent a car in Los Cabos?

It is not necessary to rent a car in Los Cabos. Though some beaches are hard to access without a vehicle, public buses do run up and down the coastal highway. To explore the region, renting a car , for at least some of the stay, can provide more flexibility. Car rental is relatively straightforward and cheap at the airport and in either of the resort towns – beyond the congested roads of the resorts, highways are generally empty and easy to navigate.

lands end lovers beach

The gorgeous “Land’s End” Beach at the southern tip of Baja is a favorite spot for visitors.

How do I get around Los Cabos without a vehicle?

Taxis or local buses are the easiest ways to get around Los Cabos without a car. Local buses run up and down the “Corridor” between Cabo and San José every 10 to 20 minutes for a handful of pesos – just flag them down. They will stop on the highway near most of the beaches on route if asked. Taxis are obviously more convenient and always available at ranks in both towns, but are very expensive by Mexican standards – they will try to charge US dollars, though paying in pesos is always cheaper because of inflated exchange rates. Always check the latest rates before getting in – there are no meters. Trips along the Corridor will be at least US$40 and between Cabo San Lucas and San José at least US$60.

When is the best time to go to Los Cabos?

The beaches of Los Cabos are at their best from November through May when there’s great weather (and whale-watching Jan–Feb). Much of the peninsula shuts down during the broiling hot summers, though Los Cabos tends to be an all-year destination. Skip Christmas, Easter, and Spring Break (Feb/March), to avoid the crowds.

Where should I stay in Los Cabos?

The coast of Los Cabos can be broadly divided into three sections. Cabo San Lucas itself is where the main marina, nightlife, and entertainment is focused and has the widest range of accommodation and food options. The beaches tend to be the busiest, though even here it’s possible to find empty sections of sand, especially on the Pacific side of town.

San José del Cabo is primarily a historic enclave, slightly inland, known for its art galleries, crafty stores, and charming restaurants – staying here in a boutique hotel is a much more tranquil experience than in Cabo, though it’s a few kilometers from the nearest beach. This is dubbed San José’s “Zona Hotelera”. The wide beach here is lined with family-friendly resorts, though the nightlife is far tamer than in Cabo San Lucas.

In between the two towns, the “Corridor” features a series of quiet coves and sandy beaches, backed by mostly high-end luxury resorts. The beaches, however, are all open to the public. Staying here means relying primarily on in-resort dining and entertainment options, or requires renting a car to visit the two main towns.

What are the best beaches in Los Cabos?

Our favorites beaches in Los Cabos include family-friendly Playa el Chileno (15km northeast of Cabo San Lucas), which has well-maintained restrooms, and a shop that rents watersports equipment. It’s excellent for swimming, diving, and snorkeling. Playa del Amor (Lovers’ Beach) in Cabo San Lucas is incredibly picturesque, accessible only by boat from Cabo Marina or Playa El Médano. Bahía Santa María, (12km northeast of Cabo San Lucas) is an enchanting horseshoe cove that offers snorkeling over reefs (rays and turtles hang out here), while Playa Acapulquito (5km south of San José del Cabo) is a tiny but beautiful sandy beach that’s ideal for beginner surfers (just around the headland lies the celebrated Zippers and La Roca surf breaks). Finally, Playa El Médano is Cabo’s premier swimming and party beach – the main strip is heaving with beach bars, vendors, jet skis, and sunbathers.

Where to change money in Los Cabos?

Though the Mexican peso is the official currency in Los Cabos, US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. However, change will often be given in pesos, and US dollar prices invariably work out to be higher than peso prices because of inflated exchange rates. Try to use ATMs to withdraw peso cash in Los Cabos if possible (check with the bank before leaving to confirm a debit card can be used and how much they will charge – using credit cards can incur interest or fees). Credit cards are widely accepted everywhere, but cash is needed for buses, most taxis, and small purchases.

See humpback whales and other amazing marine mammals up close on a whale watching tour .

What are the best things to do in Los Cabos?

The best things to do in Los Cabos are connected with the water; swimming, surfing, relaxing on the beaches, and various watersports. Other pleasures include dining, drinking, and shopping – particularly the growing number of art galleries – in the centers of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

In Cabo San Lucas, Cabo Adventures offers a range of packages involving interactions with dolphins, while numerous operators in the marina offer boat trips out to “El Arco”, the huge rock arch at the very end of the Baja peninsular. Andromeda Divers runs highly recommended scuba diving trips. For on-land excursions by camel and zip-lining, Cabo Adventures is also a solid choice. Spine-tingling aerial tours by ultralight (powered hang-glider) are organized through Cabo Sky Tours .

All sorts of boat trips operate from Cabo marina, from faux pirate ships and family-friendly catamarans , to huge party boats .

In San José del Cabo it’s worth visiting the old church, La Misión de San José del Cabo Añuití, built in 1932 on the site of the original Jesuit mission, or attending the Art Walk (usually every Thursday 5–9 pm, November to June only), when all the local art galleries open late.

It’s also worth taking a day-trip to the pretty colonial town of Todos Santos, or the provincial capital of La Paz.

What are the restaurants like in Los Cabos?

The restaurants of Los Cabos are incredibly varied. In Cabo, we love Bar Esquina located at Bahia Hotel and Beach House , with its Moorish-inspired dining room and fusion of Mexican and Mediterranean flavors, Mama’s Royal Café for its excellent breakfasts, and legendary taco joint Taquería El Paisa (Lazaro Vicario, at Alikan).

In San José del Cabo our favorites include Baja Brewing , the local microbrewery, and chef Loïc Tenoux’s French-influenced Mexican cuisine at Mi Cocina .

Is Los Cabos expensive?

Los Cabos is known for its luxury hotels, exclusive beach clubs, designer shops, and pricey bars and restaurants, and it can be a challenge to visit on a modest budget. To save money, avoid the beachfront resorts and stay in cheaper hotels in San José del Cabo (budget Airbnb deals are also a viable option here). Take local buses to get around (skip taxis), and seek out the cheaper Mexican restaurants and taquerías for meals – international restaurants are always more expensive.

Is Los Cabos safe?

Yes. Los Cabos has generally avoided the drug violence that has affected other parts of Mexico. Take the usual precautions, especially at night, and keep valuables in room safes. Theft of personal items from beaches does happen – never leave anything of value unattended, even on seemingly empty stretches of sand.

Chileno Beach Chileno Beach free

Chileno Beach's calm, shallow waters make it the go-to spot for snorkelers. But the real reason travelers love Chileno's cream-colored shore is the lack of noisy bars and restaurants that plague other Los Cabos beaches. However, this does mean that you'll have to come prepared with your own snacks and drinks and rely on public facilities (showers, toilets and rental umbrellas are on-site). Most travelers don't seem to mind these small inconveniences and say the impressive snorkeling conditions (and variety of colorful fish) make a trip here well worth it.

Chileno Beach is easily (and affordably) accessible by bus from both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo . Some visitors recommend arriving by car if you don't want to do a lot of walking and waiting in the heat for the bus. They also note that there is plenty of nearby parking.

15 Best Things to Do in Los Cabos (Mexico)

At the southern tip of Baja California Sur where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, Los Cabos is a thriving tourist region that has only just come to the world’s attention.

The Los Cabos Corridor between the main towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo is a succession of enticing coves with gentle waters for snorkelling or bathing.

On these beaches you may spot whale pods in the distance from November to April.

In the blink of an eye hotel resorts have opened up along this coastline, and are furnished with luxury spas and golf courses that are rated among the best in the country.

The Cabo Pulmo National Park is within the boundaries of Los Cabos and is a habitat for endangered sea turtles and coral reefs, while El Arco de Cabo San Lucas is an awesome natural monument at the very tip of the Baja Californian peninsula.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Los Cabos :

1. El Arco de Cabo San Lucas

El Arco De Cabo San Lucas

Without hesitation, the first thing you should do in Los Cabos is book a boat trip Land’s End next to San Lucas.

Here sinuous granite rock formations mark the point where the Sea of Cortez joins the Pacific Ocean.

The eponymous arch is a circular natural portal, and if the tides cooperate you’ll be able to go ashore to walk through it.

The arch is just one of a crowd of surreal natural monuments, like the Window to the Pacific, a rectangular hole in the cliffs where you can see through to the ocean, and Neptune’s Finger, a narrow stack resembling a giant digit from a submerged hand.

Sea lions inhabit this rocky coastline and you should pass groups of them sunning on rocky ledges.

2. Cabo Pulmo National Park

Cabo Pulmo National Park

Divers will put this marine reserve firmly in their plans, but on land you could also pack a snorkel and fins and drive northeast from San Lucas or San José.

You’ll be well off the grid in this unpopulated region, and that’s half the fun.

The coast alternates between powerful granite headlands and gentle coves, and the interior is all big skies and cactuses.

The national park has been set up to protect a chain of coral reefs, and even if you’re just snorkelling, the wealth of sea life in these waters is staggering.

At times you may be literally enveloped in shoals of fish.

Five of the seven sea turtle species reside here while on the reefs (11 coral varieties), you’ll see outlandish molluscs among the multicoloured parrotfish and butterflyfish.

3. Playa del Amor

Playa del Amor

The north-facing beach on Land’s End, Playa del Amor is bookended by the granite rocks that form “El Arco”. Facing away from the Pacific and its roaring surf, Playa del Amor is a serene cove where boats drop off day-trippers to recline on the sands, snorkel in the clear waters, climb on the rocks and get the best shots of this incomparable location.

If you need more room to stretch out, the aptly named Playa del Divorcio is just behind and pummelled by Pacific surf.

Bathing isn’t permitted on this side but there’s a generous strip of sand and the sunsets are dreamy.

4. Todos Santos

Todos Santos

Northwest of the Los Cabos municipality, across the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range, Todos Santos is a sweet traditional town that has been designated a “Pueblo Mágico” by Mexico’s Secretariat of Tourism.

That has a lot to do with the painted one-storey houses, upmarket restaurants and arts and crafts shops near the main Plaza del Pueblo.

On the south side of that square is the whitewashed mission, and there’s an Art Deco cinema from 1944 on the western frontage.

The beaches at Todos Santos are battered by the Pacific and while this isn’t conducive to casual bathing, surfers will know all about the quality of the breaks.

For those who want to give something back to the ocean environment on Baja California Sur, Tortugueros Las Playitas is a conservation charity allowing you to help leatherback turtle hatchlings find their way to the ocean.

5. Playa Santa María

Playa Santa María

A beach that you’ll never want to leave, Playa Santa María is a crescent-shaped cove defended by two promontories.

These keep the currents out, so even when other beaches are choppy, Playa Santa María is normally tranquil and clear.

Like the rest of the Los Cabos Corridor there’s been an increase in construction at Playa Santa María.

A new bathroom and a car park have taken over from what used to be a dirt track.

But as of early 2018 the beach still has an undiscovered feel, even when the boat-loads of snorkellers arrive early in the afternoon.

There are no vendors, and just a small set of palapas (palm sun shades), so it’s best to come prepared.

6. Playa el Chileno

Playa el Chileno

Another sensational beach on the Corridor, Playa el Chileno rivals Santa María for beauty and has only just been earmarked for development.

It’s an east-facing public beach on a slight recess in the coast, and there’s now a boardwalk leading down from the car park.

The quantity of sea life in the bay’s shallow waters is startling, and on calmer days the sea is clear enough that you won’t even need snorkelling gear to see the fish darting around your legs.

The joy of Playa el Chileno is its seclusion, but this means no bars or restaurants, so you’ll need to pack a picnic as well as a parasol.

In season you can sit on the rocks to the south and watch the whale pods swim past.

7. Mission San José del Cabo Church

Mission San José del Cabo Church

The grandest historical landmark in all of Los Cabos is the Colonial-style parish church in San José, the remainder of a mission founded in the 18th century.

It was the southernmost of a line of Jesuit missions that ran down the Baja California peninsula.

In 1735, five years after the mission was founded, there was a revolt among the local Pericú culture, and the missionary, Nicolás Tamaral ended up being sacrificed.

The surviving church has a simple but refined facade, with a curved pediment framed by two towers.

The nave is just as discreet, but deserves a few minutes, while there’s a plaque outside explaining the fraught first few years of the mission.

San José’s square in front is a delight, and has a classic Mexican bandstand watched by colourful houses.

8. San José del Cabo Art Walk

San José del Cabo Art Walk

On Thursday evenings in high season (November to June), San José shows off its creative side with an art walk from 17:00 to 21:00. This event was set up to attract people to the art district, a group of galleries and art shops located on the blocks behind the church.

As the art walk has gained momentum the town has made the main street, Calle Alvaro Obregon, car-free, which has added to the atmosphere.

Up to a dozen galleries in the quarter, like the Frank Arnold Gallery, Desertica and Casa Dahlia, take part in the event and organise lectures, wine evenings, meet and greets, and live music.

9. Mount Solmar

Mount Solmar

One of the most rewarding free activities available in Cabo San Lucas is climbing this rough-hewn peak on Land’s End.

Even if the slopes of Mount Solmar look tough, the trek to the top is achievable for most ages as the rocks are like natural steps and the peak isn’t much more than 100 metres above sea level.

The only hard part is finding the trailhead, which sits on private property at a dog shelter, but this can be easily researched online.

Once you hit the summit the panoramas of Los Arcos and the San Lucas Bay are everything you’d hope for.

10. Whale Watching

Whale Watching

December to April Los Cabos is on the migration route of the humpback whales that swim down to tropical waters off Mexico’s Pacific Coast to calve.

As we’ve mentioned, in these months you could find a headland along the Corridor and chances are you’ll spot a fin or tail if you’re patient.

There’s a directory of businesses offering whale-spotting expeditions.

Companies like Whale Watch Cabo are so confident that you’ll see whales in this five-month window that complimentary follow-up tours are provided if you don’t see anything on the first trip.

Many vessels also have hydrophones installed so you can hear the humpbacks’ whalesong.

11. Wirikuta Botanical Cactus Garden

Wirikuta Botanical Cactus Garden

In five hectares, this attraction at Puerto los Cabos has more than 1,500 varieties of cactuses and succulents from all over the world.

The Wirikuta Botanical Cactus Garden is planted as a kind of homage to desert plants, with 1,000,000 specimens arranged in strips and concentric circles.

Wirikuta also has a superb sculpture garden featuring works by some heavyweights of Mexican modern art like Gabriel Macotela, José Luis Cuevas and Manuel Felguérez.

On Wednesday nights the park is the scene of an authentic Huichol acrobatics and dance show, with surprisingly high production values.

Diving

Los Cabos is as good as it gets for seasoned divers.

There are reefs bright with eye-popping wildlife and where you can drift with the currents, and bull shark dives are available in Cabo Pulmo.

Curious sea lions may approach you, and if you don’t think twice about plunging to the depths of the Cabo San Lucas Underwater Canyon you’ll witness the bizarre natural phenomenon of “Sand Falls”. Here sand cascades down the cliff, propelled by currents and the slight movements of tectonic plates.

New to diving? Cabo Pulmo and the Corridor have protected coves where newcomers can enter the water from the beach.

Dive companies in Los Cabos also provide tailored trips up to La Paz from October to swim with whale sharks.

13. Outdoor Adventure

Baja California Sur, ATV riding

The raw desert interior of Baja California Sur is geared towards high-octane fun.

For adrenaline junkies there are ATV and buggy trips along dusty riverbeds: Companies in San Lucas and San José will pick you up from your accommodation and take you out to the remote desert for high-speed drives, all captured by a professional photographer and with post-trip beers to wind down.

On the Corridor between the two main towns sits Wild Canyon Adventures, a cross between an adventure sports company and a theme park.

They also offer ATV and buggy trips, as well as bungee jumping, zip-lining across a wild desert canyon and camel rides, to name a few.

For younger family members Wild Canyon has a zoo with macaws, iguanas, crocodiles and more camels that kids can interact with.

If you’re brave you can even try handling a baby croc.

Los Cabos Golf Course

In no time at all Los Cabos has become the best place to play golf in Mexico.

Seven of Mexico’s top fifteen courses listed in Golfer’s Digest in 2016 were based in Los Cabos.

This is staggering when you think that the first course only opened in 1987. Many of the deluxe courses have taken advantage of the once empty coast on the Corridor, where the rough is flecked with mesquite and cactuses.

The highest-rated of all is Cabo del Sol, which has as Ocean Course plotted by Jack Nicklaus and a Desert Course by Tom Weiskopf.

A green fee will set you back $375 USD at peak times from January to May, but a discerning low-handicap golfer will feel it’s worth every penny.

After a round at Cabo del Sol you can watch the ocean from the veranda of the hacienda-style clubhouse.

15. Cuisine

Shrimp Tacos

One of the most peculiar but appetising local specialities is almejas chocolatas (chocolate clams), in which seasoned clams are cooked on a bed of pebbles covered with romerillo scrub twigs that are set alight.

It goes without saying that fish and shrimp tacos are a much-loved treat, and there’s an array of stews and soups prepared with shrimp, lobster and giant sea snails (abalones). Squid are also plentiful, and the regional way of cooking calamari is to season the squid with coriander seeds, garlic, cumin, oregano and pasilla chilli before frying it in butter.

And if you’re peckish early in the day you could get your hands on a tamale de Güemes, a maize dough pocket stuffed with chicken, pork, raisins and olives.

The best seasons in Los Cabos for sun, water sports and margaritas

Apr 2, 2022 • 7 min read

High-angle view of Cabo San Lucas harbour in Mexico.

Los Cabos’ desert-meets-the-sea views look awfully beautiful all year long © ferrantraite / Getty Images

Picture-perfect Los Cabos offers a desert-meets-sea aesthetic, with gorgeous burnt orange rock formations that tumble down to meet the wide open Pacific.

Los Cabos is a natural stunner, but it also happens to be one of Mexico’s most luxurious destinations. Packed with some of the best resorts in the country, Los Cabos often sets the bar on a five-star experience.

But there is much more to this southern Baja town than stellar accommodations. The destination is also known for its world-class water sports, diving, yachting, culture and events. It’s no wonder that Los Cabos is one of Mexico’s best year-round destinations.

Still, there are always things to consider when deciding the best time to visit Los Cabos. High-season holidays can drive up hotel rates, while low season can either make or break a vacation, with the potential for both rock-bottom prices and thrashing storms. Even in low season, however, Los Cabos manages to find a way to keep things fun and enjoyable.

Here’s our season-by-season, month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Los Cabos.

Stick to high season (December to April) for perfect weather

With average temperatures that range between a delicious 77 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, high season is the most popular time to visit Los Cabos for a reason. Thanks to cool breezes that ride in off of the Pacific, visitors to Los Cabos can expect sunny and warm days with cooler desert nights. Since Los Cabos is where the desert meets the sea, the cooler winter temperatures make this the best time for sightseeing in Los Cabos, from outdoor adventures like ATV riding and hiking to visiting its so-called Magic Towns, like Todos Santos . High season is also the best time of year to see the whale sharks that migrate past Los Cabos. All of this said, high season does bring crowds, especially around Christmas, New Year’s and spring break. Expect hotels and restaurants to increase their rates considerably.

Peace and quiet await during shoulder season (May to June)

Los Cabos’ shoulder season might be the destination’s best-kept secret. Not only are temperatures still perfectly pleasant (warm in the day, cool at night), but the majority of crowds have gone home – meaning prices come down, and the frenzied, vivacious holiday vibe gives way to one that’s almost sleepy. While the whales will have left for cooler waters, the increasingly warmer temperatures mean that the water is just right for swimming. (Though as always you’ll have to scope out the elusive swimmable beaches in Los Cabos, as many are too turbulent for a casual swim.) Temperatures start to really get up there in May and June as Los Cabos heads into its driest months. Still, with plenty of sun and prices that descend from the holiday highs, you’ll see that shoulder season is one of the best times to visit Los Cabos.

You can find great deals in low season (July to September)

Late summer into early fall is when you’ll start to see temperatures rise into the 90s (Fahrenheit), bringing a thick blanket of humidity and lots of rain. While the rain may make it a little more difficult to catch those southern Baja rays, the rainy weather brings a green, lush carpet to the otherwise rocky desert environment. This time of year is incredibly quiet by Los Cabos standards, and visitors may find that restaurants or activities operate on more limited schedules. That said, this is the time to find the best deals in Los Cabos, from lower nightly rates to free upgrades.

Here’s a monthly guide to what you can expect in Los Cabos. Keep in mind that events and details are subject to change.

January is the coolest month in Los Cabos. But even the coldest day here is still pretty warm. Expect a large number of crowds and high hotel prices first week of the month, as New Year’s celebrations wind down.

Key events: El Día de los Reyes Magos, Todos Santos Music Festival

You’ll still be enjoying the perfect weather in Los Cabos, only this time with much more space to yourself. Except, of course, if you're into jazz. February is when Plaza Pescador in San José del Cabo plays host to the Jazz Festival, a key event of the vibrant cultural scene in the region.

Key events: Todos Santos Art Festival, Los Cabos Half Marathon, Jazz Festival

Daytime temperatures begin to inch their way into the 80s during the month of March, and with the start of spring break in schools, you’ll start to notice an uptick in both families as well as younger travelers looking to party by the pool by day and bar-hop by night.

Key events: Cheese & Wine Festival, Todos Santos Film Festival

By April, spring break and Semana Santa (Holy Week) are in full spring all across Mexico’s resort destinations, including Los Cabos. Expect high room rates and lots of people out on the beaches, in the streets, and at the bars, especially in Cabo San Lucas. San José del Cabo tends to be much more quiet. By the end of the month, though, the frenzy begins to cool off, while the temperatures begin to climb.

Key events: Spring Break, Semana Santa

May languidly rolls in on a heat wave. Yet it’s also one of the best times to visit Los Cabos because the vibe still hums with energy, especially if you’re a boater or a surfer. Surf season in Los Cabos runs from May through October in the Sea of Cortez. May also brings thousands of aquatic enthusiasts to the marina to enjoy the Cabo Marine Show.

Key events: Cabo Marine Show, Gastrovino Baja Food & Wine Festival

The southern tip of the Baja Peninsula is a tropical desert, and June weather will certainly remind you of that. The days stay hot, and precipitation is virtually nonexistent. But that does not stop Los Cabos from putting on a host of events. From surf competitions to golf and music, Los Cabos has plenty to entertain.

Key events: Los Cabos Open of Surf, Stars Stripes Fishing & Golf Tournament, Fiesta de la Música, Gala de Danza

Scorching temperatures hit their peak in Los Cabos in July. You may see a rainstorm here and there, but precipitation is still pretty rare at the peak of summer. July begins turtle-nesting-season in Los Cabos. It’s also peak time of year for Mexican summer vacation, which means beaches can be crowded and hotel occupancy high.

Key events: East Cape Dorado Shootout

Blazing temperatures and thick humidity continue. Thunderstorms start to become more normal towards the end of the month. Still, fishing is in full swing in the Sea of Cortez.

Key events: East Cape Bisbee Tournament, Festival del Mango Todos Santos

Los Cabos crashes into September with a roll of thunder and heavy rain. It is the wettest month in Los Cabos. While hurricane season is said to start in summer, in reality the storms don’t kick up force until September.

Key events: Independence Day

Storms continue into October, though they tend to taper off considerably compared to September. October is also when Los Cabos begins to prepare for the rush of the holiday high season. Hotel rates start to climb, and the events calendar starts to pick up again, especially when it comes to fishing tournaments.

Key events: Los Cabos Billfish Tournament, Bisbee's Los Cabos Offshore Tournament, Bisbee's International Black & Blue Tournament, Fiestas Tradicionales Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos Gran Fondo

After months of heat and humidity, the temperatures finally begin to break in November, and the rains start to fade away. Peak season is just around the corner, so it’s best to book November travel a few months in advance in order to secure lower prices. Thanksgiving is one of the most popular times to visit Los Cabos. November is when many of the peak season events start back up, like the San José del Cabo Art Walks and the organic market.

Key events: Day of the Dead, Los Cabos International Film Festival, VIP Summit

Peak season officially kicks off when the calendar flips to December. If you like whale watching, December kicks off the season when the whales start to arrive in the warmer waters around Los Cabos. Crowds start to arrive in Los Cabos in droves and hotel rates reach all-time highs, especially in the days leading up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Still, this is one of the most energetic times to be in Los Cabos, with holiday celebrations, foodie events and lots of parties to enjoy.

Key events: Sabor a Cabo Festival, New Year’s Eve Fireworks

16 Essential Cabo Travel Tips for a Better Vacation

Share with your friends!

There are a few important things to know before going to Cabo San Lucas that many people don’t realize until they get there.

For example, there’s a few different areas to stay, important information about beaches and swimming, and age restrictions are hotels during certain times of the year.

This post covers all the essential Cabo travel tips you should know before booking your vacation to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click through and make a purchase I may make a small commission. I only share information about things I know, love and trust!

Los Cabos vs. Cabo San Lucas vs. San Jose del Cabo – What’s the Difference?

place travel mexico los cabos

Planning a trip to Cabo can be confusing if you’ve never been before.

Los Cabos is the name for the entire region, which includes the two main cities: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

It’s important to know which city or area you want to stay in.

Cabo San Lucas is the more popular destination for tourists, and this is where you’ll find all the nightlife, bars/clubs, lively beach restaurants, and the marina with all the water sports.

San Jose del Cabo is about 40 minutes away, and this is where the international airport is.

San Jose del Cabo is more of a residential vibe, a little quieter and laid back, with some upscale resorts and quiet family friendly hotels.

Best Area to Stay in Los Cabos

Along the coast in between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas are a lot of all inclusive resorts.

So if you want to visit each city for a half day, it might make the most sense to stay somewhere in the middle, also known as the tourist corridor.

Any of the resorts along the tourist corridor are a great place to stay as far as location goes.

If you want nightlife and beach bars, it’s best to stay at a boutique hotel or an all inclusive resort somewhere near the Marina in Cabo San Lucas.

Cabo San Lucas Airport Tips

place travel mexico los cabos

Transportation

Make sure you already have your transportation arranged before you land at the airport.

After you exit customs, but before you get outside, you’ll walk through a corridor with lots of sales reps hollering at you trying to get your attention.

These are timeshare reps, disguising themselves as transportation helpers.

They will shout at you and ask you which company you traveled with and when you answer, they will pretend to be with that company.

Avoid these people, and get outside as fast as you can. Outside is where the reputable transportation agencies are.

Money Exchange

If you can, avoid using the currency exchange and ATMs at the airport. The rates are horrible and will be way too expensive.

Documents You Need to Travel to Cabo San Lucas

place travel mexico los cabos

US citizens require a passport to enter Mexico, whether by air or land entry.

Canadians also need a passport to enter Mexico, it’s a good idea to make sure it will be valid for at least 6 months from your date of travel. In other words, you don’t want to arrive in Mexico with a passport that’s set to expire in a few weeks.

Keep Your Tourist Card

When you arrive at the airport in Cabo, you’ll go through customs where you’re given a tourist card (you have to originally fill this out on the plane).

Keep this card with your passport in a safe place and don’t throw it away! You need this card to depart the country.

The Beaches are not Swimmable

The most important thing to know before traveling to Cabo is that most of the beaches are not swimmable.

This is because the currents are too strong which makes it completely unsafe to swim in.

Many all inclusive resorts are beachfront, but you won’t actually be allowed to swim in the water.

You might be able to walk along the beach, however, most beaches are very rocky.

Beaches You CAN Swim in Cabo

place travel mexico los cabos

  • Medano Beach
  • Chileno Bay/Beach
  • Lovers Beach & Divorce Beach

There are a few beaches that are safe enough to swim in, Medano Beach near the marina in Cabo San Lucas is the most popular one.

That being said, the views of the beaches and the ocean are absolutely stunning in Cabo.

So if you prefer to sit by the pool with gorgeous views, you’ll love Cabo.

Here’s a list of 18 resorts in Cabo with swimmable beaches.

You Can’t Drink the Tap Water in Cabo

The tap water in Mexico has different bacteria than most people from the USA or Canada are used to, so it’s recommended that you just drink bottled water (which is always available and very inexpensive).

I have no problem brushing my teeth with the tap water, but just try not to swallow any of it.

You don’t have to be concerned about ordering drinks with ice either, as all ice used in restaurants, bars, hotels and resorts comes from filtered water.

So you can feel fine ordering your Margarita on the rocks in Cabo!

Uber in Cabo

Uber does exist in Cabo, but there are still a few issues being worked out.

The taxi companies do not like that Uber is becoming popular and this can cause some problems.

For instance, if you’re staying at an all inclusive resort, there is a usually a large gate with a guard to enter the property. And then it’s a 2 or 3 minute drive to the hotel lobby.

Most resorts do not let Uber through these gates.

So if you’re trying to get dropped off at your hotel, your Uber ride might not be let through.

Thus, if you’re booking a private car to or from the resort, it’s best to stick with a taxi.

Also, you can’t take an Uber from the airport.

However, if you’re hanging out in either Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo, using an Uber to get around the cities is no problem.

Safety in Cabo

If you’re traveling to Cabo as a tourist on vacation, you’ll have no issue with safety. Especially if you’re planning to stay at your resort the entire time.

If you do plan to spend some time walking around downtown Cabo San Lucas, as long as you don’t make yourself a target, you won’t have any issues.

This means being aware of your surroundings, not wearing flashy and expensive looking jewelry, not having large amounts of cash on you and not becoming completely inebriated.

As long as you use common sense and don’t go looking for trouble, you won’t run into any safety issues.

Los Cabos is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico and there is no need to feel unsafe.

Expect Vendors Selling You ANYTHING

From dusk into the night, as you walk along the Marina and the beach, there are many vendors trying to sell you items that you shouldn’t buy.

I’ll call these ‘party favors’ if you know what I mean.

You’ll likely get bombarded, with vendors asking you to buy things every 30 feet.

This surprises a lot of first time visitors to Cabo, but this is just the way it is. You can simply ignore them and keep walking or say ‘no gracias.’

Check the Age Restrictions of Your Hotel

Cabo is well known as one of the trendiest and also high-end places to vacation in Mexico. It’s also one of the most popular places for spring breakers to visit.

Because of this, some hotels have minimum age requirements for check-in.

While the minimum drinking age is 18, many hotels and resorts require someone to be 21 to check-in.

Additionally, for the months of March and April, some hotels require you to be 25 years of age or older.

Is It Better to Use Pesos or US Dollars in Cabo?

place travel mexico los cabos

Technically, you can use either Mexican Pesos or US dollars to pay for things in Cabo.

While USD is widely accepted, you won’t get as good of an exchange rate, and you’ll end up overpaying slightly.

Also, each bar and restaurant might have their own exchange rate.

Mexican pesos is the local currency that should be used in Cabo, and you’ll get a better rate by paying in pesos.

If it’s your first trip to Mexico, there are a few things you should know about the local currency, like tipping, using small bills and how to get change.

For more details, I suggest reading my full guide to Mexico travel tips .

How Many Days Do You Need in Cabo?

Most people spend between 5 to 7 days in Cabo. If you’re staying at an all inclusive resort (like most people do), one week is the perfect amount of time to vacation in Cabo San Lucas.

This allows you enough time to enjoy the resort’s amenities for a few days, as well as one or two excursions, and a day or evening checking out the nightlife in Cabo San Lucas.

When to Avoid Cabo

Cabo is a great place to visit most of the year, but mid-August throughout September is when you should avoid Cabo. This is when the short rainy season starts, and it could become very stormy.

August and September are also the most humid and hottest months, making the weather a little too unbearable for many people.

Many people avoid October as well, due to the heat and humidity. However, fishing can be really good during the month of October.

Be Aware of Timeshare Presentations

place travel mexico los cabos

Many resorts and hotels will offer you free activities, vouchers, spa credits, transportation, etc., in exchange for going to a 2 hour timeshare presentation.

To some people, this is worth it, but you should know what you’re getting into beforehand.

The timeshare reps usually approach you after you check-in, and offer to give you a tour of the property and show you around.

This happened to us when we stayed at the Grand Palladium in Puerto Vallarta.

First, the sales reps usually say it’s only 90 minutes to 2 hours long. It’s usually during a complimentary breakfast.

Note that it usually lasts much longer than this, and often takes up to a half day by the time you leave.

If you do attend, you should also know that you will be pressured to sign up. They use very skilled salespeople to ‘hard close’ you.

It can be too pushy and very uncomfortable for some people.

If you are not interested in purchasing any timeshare contracts and are confident in saying no, then the free activities might be worth it.

Inside tip – sales people try to disguise timeshares as something else. Sometimes it will be called vacation rentals, club membership, or even a welcome breakfast or cocktail hour.

  • Always ask if there is a presentation associated with this. If so, this is a timeshare sales pitch.

ME Cabo is the overall best place to stay in Los Cabo. This five-star luxury resort is nestled in the heart of Cabo San Lucas. It comes with its own private stretch of beach away from the huge crowds in the public areas.

Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Los Cabos.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

The 52 Places Traveler: In Los Cabos, Beaches Abound, but So Does Generosity

The southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, turned out to be like an immersive choose-your-own-adventure novel. Here are a few of those turns, and the resulting ups and downs.

By Jada Yuan

Our columnist, Jada Yuan, is visiting each destination on our 52 Places to Go in 2018 list . This dispatch brings her to the East Cape of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, which took the No. 11 spot on the list and is the 10th stop on Jada’s itinerary.

I sped along a two-hour inland drive from touristy San José del Cabo, until paved highway gave way to dirt roads and dust and the coast came into view. Within an hour of parking, I was snorkeling with sea lions in Gulf of California waters containing the oldest of three coral reefs on the west coast of North America.

In a world of seemingly constant dire environmental news, the 17,500-acre Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is a rare success story. When resident fishermen stopped coming home with sufficient hauls in the early 1990s, they proposed a radical plan : Stop commercial fishing and let the reef rebuild itself. Led by researchers from the Autonomous University of Baja California and the Castro family — which runs Cabo Pulmo Divers and Cabo Pulmo Sports Center , where I booked my $50, two-hour snorkeling tour — the villagers lobbied the government to designate the area a marine protected zone, and enforced the no-fishing edicts themselves. Between 1995 and 2009, the reef’s biodiversity increased 463 percent , and every major species returned, even large predators like bull sharks and manta rays.

On our first dip in the water, we saw a stunning array of fish ranging from yellow-striped snapper to blue iridescent scissortail damselfish. On our second dip, we swam with sea lions, who often got so close to us we could touch them, in a friendly but not entirely domesticated way.

“When I thought of Baja and Cabo San Lucas, I just thought it would be party people and filled with Americans,” said Luis Roberto Díaz Flores, a 24-year-old brand content producer from Mexico City I met snorkeling. He was vacationing with friends in La Paz, the state’s capital city, two hours north of Los Cabos. “But for the four days we’ve been here, I’ve just been surprised over and over again. To me, the places I’ve seen here are probably in my top five that I’ve ever experienced in my own country.”

The peninsula seems synonymous with Los Cabos, comprising the cities of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, where I stayed, all connected by a 20-mile “corridor” of resorts and golf courses. For me, the southern tip of Baja turned out to be like an immersive choose-your-own-adventure novel. It asks you the existential question of which unmarked dirt road you’ll take, and has you answer it — and pay the consequences — all in real time. Here are a few of those turns, and the resulting ups and downs.

The West Side

My directive was to explore the peninsula’s lesser-known East Cape — but I got greedy. The only time I’ve been to Baja was when I was 12 and, this time around, I wanted to gobble up the whole coastline. That included a visit to the beaches of Todos Santos, an artsy town on the west coast that was not at all on the itinerary. The pit stop, as they are sometimes wont to do when you’re not paying attention, turned into five hours.

They were five beautiful hours. I wandered around the picturesque Hotel San Cristó bal , with its infinity pool overlooking Punta Lobos , an active fisherman’s beach that’s non-swimmable, like most of the water on the Pacific side of Baja, because of surf and undertow. Locals drove their 4x4s straight onto the sand; kids played soccer with balls they frequently kicked into the waves.

The biggest time suck, though, was trying to find Las Palmas Tropicales , a palm oasis where beachgoers can sometimes share space with wild horses. The entrance, I’d been told, was an unmarked dirt road a few minutes past the dirt road I’d taken to Punta Lobos.

Here is where my choose-your-own-adventure theory of Baja began. Every dirt path I turned down had unmarked forks in the road, which led to different unmarked forks. One choice took me to a steep, winding hill road with grooves so deep I thought my tire would get wedged in one. Another took me into a den of snarling dogs.

Many choices later, I figured out that the unmarked road I should have taken was the second one past mile marker 57, just before the bridge. And that I need ed to follow the two other cars headed to the same destination and blow past a scary “Propiedad Privada” sign. Was it worth it when I finally pulled into a thick grove of the thinnest, tallest palm trees I’ve ever seen, looking wild and unkempt? It was. That is, until I realized I still had another two-hour drive to east coast beaches I wanted to see, and I’d probably be getting there after dark.

That’s when I came up with my second Baja theory: Beaches here are all pretty spectacular. Ask Mexicans for recommendations and pick the one that doesn’t have you driving at night on twisty roads with cow crossings.

The Beaches That Got Away

In the name of not having to drive so far afield, the trip I’d take if I came back would actually begin in La Paz, which puts you closest to La Balandra Beach — popular among Mexican vacationers for its crystal clear shallow waters and routinely voted the most beautiful in the country. It’s also just a two-hour ferry ride complete with whale watching from the uninhabited island national park of Espíritu Santo , where snorkelers can swim among whale sharks. (To make the ferry from the south would require a drive starting around 5 a.m.) “You get closer to the island, and I swear, that’s the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Mr. Díaz Flores.

I’d also return to the quaint eastern beach town of Los Barriles , which I drove through at night. It seems to have a high gringo quotient, but few of the tourist-driven annoyances of Los Cabos, where a common complaint is being constantly approached about buying a timeshare. Bonus, the location is within striking distance of Cabo Plumo and El Chorro Hot Springs in the mountains of Santiago.

Food? Go Low-End

You will hear a lot about the trio of restaurant-farms on the east side of San José del Cabo: Flora Farms , Acre and Los Tamarindos . They are delicious and beautiful. But the meal I’ll remember most was the battered and deep fried fish tacos from the no-frills Tacqueria Rossy, located in what might be described as San José del Cabo’s taco district off Highway 1. I had headed there on the passionate recommendation of an Instagram follower and had that praise backed up by a Cabo resident I asked for directions. My plastic plate came with two corn tortillas and two unappealing lumps of fish that turned out to be incredibly moist. Grilled jalapeños and every topping from the abundant salsa bar brought them into tacos-to-write-home-about territory.

Mariachi Serendipity

San José del Cabo’s famed Thursday Art Walk began soon after I arrived. I saw moving mixed media self-portraits from the artist Hugo Aguilar — and a veritable river of gringos (myself included). Yet even on the most touristy of nights, a part of real Mexico broke through. As I was leaving La Lupita Taco & Mezcal , where I’d spent the night tasting spirits and enjoying the house rock band, a mariachi septet walked in. They launched into the classics “La Bikina” and “La Negra,” and the entire front room of the restaurant began to sing along. It appeared that the band, Mariachi Cabo , had finished its rounds at local restaurants and now w as just having fun. No tip hat made the rounds, but t he members gladly accepted shots of tequila.

The Best Beach Is the Local Beach

“We’re going to another beach. You’re welcome to come with us,” said Mr. Díaz Flores, the vacationer from Mexico City I had met on my snorkeling jaunt. He and his friends had gotten a tip about a hidden haven toward the northern exit of the park.

A dirt road led us to a stretch of sand and a sign for Playa Miramar. Clusters of tents overlooked gently rolling surf. Towels and swimsuits were draped across every surface of a pickup truck to dry. By no design, I’d come to Mexico on Semana Santa, or Holy Week, when most of the country, including my new friends from Mexico City, happened to be on break.

What Mr. Díaz Flores and I found after a little asking around was a heartening makeshift town of Cabo San Lucas locals. All echoed the same sentiment, that they had driven two hours from their homes because this is the closest swimmable camping beach available to them. Many of the beaches along the Hotel Row of their city and San José were private, and the ones that weren’t had strict no swimming or camping policies because of fierce waves and riptides.

On Playa Miramar, though, they’d built a cocoon of relaxation I can only hope to mimic some day. A taxi driver beachgoer we met drank beer while lounging in a makeshift couch his children had sculpted in sand. His eldest son fished nearby while an uncle dove in with a net and another friend rowed a boat trawling for bait parallel to the shore. They had nothing but tiny baitfish to show for the day — but then, as the moon rose, orange and bright as a spotlight, nabbed three big catches at once. “Es la ley,” shrugged Erick Castro, a Cabo-based finance manager who was fishing alongside them. (“It’s the law.”)

What had struck me most about Baja, beyond even the beaches, was a spirit of generosity that reminded me of being back home in New Mexico. I saw that generosity in drivers who were constantly stopping their cars in the middle of a highway to allow me to make a left turn. Or my waiter at Flora Farms, Jorge Solano, who invited me to go to La Baladra Beach with his entire family. Or a plumber on a camping holiday at Playa Miramar who gave me his name and number and invited me to his niece’s quinceañera next year — an invitation that I soon lost to a gust of wind. Anyone in Cabo, if you know a plumber named Oscar, please tell him I’d be honored if he’d get in touch.

Practical Tips

Don’t drive at night like I did. Taking the two-lane Highway 1 from Cabo Pulmo to San José, I got stuck behind exceedingly slow cars more times than I could count. “Only cars?” Mr. Solano, my Flora Farms waiter, remarked. “Usually it’s horses or cows, and the whole drive can take four hours.” One night, while driving on the regional road, at far too late an hour, what crossed my path but: a herd of cows.

I’ll admit to having qualms about heading to Los Cabos after hearing about its exceedingly high murder rate in 2017 , and the shooting death of its police chief in December. I did notice police checks on the highway between San José and Cabo San Lucas every night I drove that way, though I didn’t experience any incidents of my own. (A gay friend of mine and his partner had a very unpleasant time being harassed in Cabo San Lucas — which a longtime hospitality worker in the area told me didn’t surprise her.) La Paz, too, was the site of a lengthy shootout between police and cartel members in January. The cartels and tourism seem to operate in very different spheres. You’ll have to decide for yourself if the risk is worth it.

A final note on lodging: The only room I could find for a last-minute booking in San José del Cabo was at Alegranza Luxury Resorts . I walked in to find a three-bedroom, three-bathroom palace with a balcony overlooking a distant ocean for $248 a night, plus a small resort fee. It had multiple pools and was one day the site of a children’s Easter party that I got to see from my room, with an animated storyteller recounting “La Resurrección de Jesus Cristo.”

Destination: Los Cabos & Mexico’s Pacific Coast

Why los cabos & the pacific coast of mexico.

300 days of sunshine a year.

30 direct flights from the U.S. on major airlines like Delta and more.

Though the official currency is the Mexican peso, American dollars are widely accepted.

What’s New in Los Cabos & the Pacific Coast of Mexico

Los Cabos was named the “Best Destination in Mexico” by Travel Weekly.

The Los Cabos region was named “Golf Destination of the Year” for 2023, by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.

The MICHELIN Guide arrived in Mexico in May 2024, including 19 restaurants in San José del Cabo and the region.

A new Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) at the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) better serves private aviation.

In a region as diverse as Los Cabos and the Pacific coast of Mexico — where adventure, wellness and tranquility effortlessly blend to create a destination unlike any other — there are plenty of options when it comes to things to see and do, as well as places to grab a bite to eat, or host a power lunch or dinner. Here, we look at a few spots in and around Los Cabos and the Pacific Coast of Mexico to pique your interest.

Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery

For more than 15 years, the Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery , in the historic center of San José del Cabo, has exhibited works of contemporary and modern art not only by acclaimed international artists, but local, regional and national artists, too. In addition to its exhibitions, the gallery occasionally hosts Art to Table, a unique experience during which chefs interpret an artist’s work through creative dishes.

Understated Surfing Spots

Consistent swells, warm weather year-round and uncrowded breaks suitable for beginners and experts alike make Los Cabos and the Pacific coast of Mexico an uber-popular surfing destination. Whether your clients are surfers or not, a fun break away from the business of the day can be a visit to one of the area’s popular surf spots to watch others hang 10. Or, for a fun teambuilding event, take lessons and learn to rip it yourselves.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Views

Just like the area’s surfing spots, Los Cabos and the Pacific coast of Mexico affords plenty of opportunities to take in stunning views from myriad hiking trails. From the rugged coastline and seaside cliffs to desert landscapes complete with surprising waterfalls and natural pools, the natural wonder of Los Cabos awaits.

Whale Watching

If your time in Los Cabos and the Pacific coast of Mexico falls between December and April, you’re in luck — that’s prime whale watching season along the coastline. Just like people, whales follow the warmer weather to the nutrient-rich waters to not only feed, but have their babies. Charter a boat for your group to see the gray and humpback whales for yourselves.

Farm-to-Table Cooking Class

Put another spin on farm-to-table with a cooking class high above Los Cabos at Monte Cardón. After the chefs source local ingredients from surrounding farms and orchards, not to mention the sea, your group is in for a four-hour fiesta during which you’ll take a tour of the property, enjoy a welcome cocktail and participate in a hands-on, three-course cooking class, enjoying the fruits of your labor afterwards. Private cooking classes are available, and the venue is available for private events if you’d rather someone else do the cooking.

The golfers in your group will delight in the opportunity to tee off on any one of the more than 20 golf courses in and around Los Cabos, especially the waterfront courses where it seems as though the greens reach right into the ocean. The region is such a dream for golfers that pro Ernie Els and his team at Ernie Els Designs are developing a new 18-hole course just 15 minutes north of downtown Cabo San Lucas.

Cocina de Autor

Los Cabos’ first MICHELIN Star was awarded to Cocina de Autor in May 2024, led by two MICHELIN Star Chef Sidney Schutte. Your guests will be wowed by an unforgettable eight- to 10-course dinner tasting menu that highlights the regions freshest local meats, seafood and produce, all presented in playful yet sensational dishes.

Finding inspiration in the region’s vibrant flavors, Zenna , an Asian-Latin restaurant, is a terrific culinary destination for adventurous foodies. For breakfast, try a plate of Thai sausage and fried eggs served with fried rice and a mint basil salad. The dinner menu features crudos, sushi, crispy chicken, short rib gyozas, pan seared sea bass and a grilled New York steak served with a plantain puree.

The Woods Cabo

Woods Los Cabos

Chef Larbi Dahrouch uses his extensive culinary training to create dishes that highlight the essence of the region for an elevated dining experience at The Woods Cabo . The restaurant’s sushi and butcher house menus complement its extensive dinner menu that features French, Spanish and Baja-inspired flavors. A private event space is available for up to 20 guests, or reserve the entire restaurant for an exclusive dinner.

This Adults-only, All-inclusive Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico, Has an Oceanfront Infinity Pool With a Swim-up Bar, En Suite Jacuzzis, and 24-hour Nachos

We were among the first to stay at the brand-new Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos.

When it comes to idyllic Mexico vacation spots, Los Cabos needs no introduction. The destination welcomes more than 3 million travelers a year and has no shortage of resorts — and a slew of them are all-inclusive. In February 2024, a new all-inclusive resort, only for adults, opened its doors: Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos .

If the name sounds familiar, it's because the owners also have Grand Velas Los Cabos two doors down from the new property. While the 491-room Grand Velas is family-friendly with amenities like a lounge for teens and a 9 a.m. - 11 p.m. daycare for kids, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos is strictly for adults 18 years and older.

Juan Vela Ruiz, vice president of Velas Resorts, told Travel + Leisure that the decision to create an adults-only property is about giving travelers more choices. "With Velas Resorts, we try to give a very wide range of options to our guests," Ruiz said. That's why the hospitality company opted to open an adults-only hotel to complement the thriving family-friendly enclave next door.

Ruiz also noted that Grand Velas was one of the original players in the Los Cabos all-inclusive luxury market. "When we first came out with the all-inclusive luxury product, there was no other player [like us in the area]," he said.

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos

  • All-inclusive resorts often get a bad rep for food quality but this resort really sets the bar high.
  • The oceanfront infinity pool with a swim-up bar is the shining star of the property.
  • Every guest gets a private concierge who is a text message away, and it makes it so easy to ask questions and put in requests.

When I stepped onto the property, I immediately noticed the clean, simple, and modern aesthetic — perfect for an only-for-adults hot spot. Tones of beige dominated with only one bright pop of color: pink bougainvillea flowers. (The flowers are a trademark of Velas properties, which are scattered throughout Mexico.)

Here, my review of the new, all-inclusive Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos.

Grand Velas Boutique has 79 guest rooms and each is more than 900 square feet with a living area, walk-in shower, and either two queen-size beds or a king-size bed. Some rooms offer ocean views and other have garden views, but all rooms have a private terrace with either a Jacuzzi or a plunge pool.

My room had a box of assorted fruits and a tray with a bottle of mezcal. It was also stocked with chips, candy, nuts, and granola. The beverage options included soda, Gatorade, Tecate beer, water, peach juice, and chardonnay. Every night, a delicious dessert amenity appeared with the turndown service.

The bathroom amenities included Molton Brown soap, body wash, and hair products; Dyson hair dryers and straighteners; and dental kits and shaving kits. Each room also came with a straw basket for guests to sport around the resort with their towels and/or belongings.

But the standout part of my suite was definitely the stunning sea views that allowed me to watch the sunrise every morning and also peep whales on the horizon. The view was so good that I spent more time on the balcony than in my room.

Food and Drink

The quality of food at an all-inclusive can make or break the experience. At Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos, the food and beverage options 100 percent make the stay.

The property has five food-and-beverage establishments: Loto, 51 Bar, Del Mar, Roca Bar, and the Pool Bar. All are part of the all-inclusive package and each offers guests something different. "If you go to any of the all-inclusive adults-only boutique hotels in town, they will have one or two restaurants," Ruiz said. "Ours have more, and you will not have to repeat restaurants."

My first stop was 51 Bar, which offers grab-and-go fare, whether for a snack or a lighter breakfast. I was ushered here for my check-in process and swiftly handed a refreshing mocktail to enjoy on one of the plush couches. I found myself visiting for my mid-day caffeine fix and also loitering around the outdoor fireplace for a mocktail at night. (The team of bartenders can whip up mocktails and cocktails throughout the day, and a massive TV in the back serves as a spot for guests to catch up on sports.)

My first sit-down meal was at Loto, a dinner-only spot offering Japanese-Mexican fusion cuisine that specializes in slow-cooking over an open fire. Here, I feasted on tuna tartar cones, a shrimp salad dressed in eel sauce, and an assortment of yaki tori : chicken in shoyu dressing, octopus in gochujang and yuzu, and scallops in miso butter.

For breakfast, guests have the option to indulge in room service on plant-based burritos, vegetarian enchiladas, an assortment of egg dishes, creme brûlée french toast, to name a few options. But there's also daily breakfast (both buffet and à la carte) at Del Mar, which features a menu with traditional Mexican and continental fare.

My first breakfast was huevos rancheros, with a chicken quesadilla and chia-seed pudding on the side. The next day I enjoyed chilaquiles and enchiladas with a side of seasonal fruit. And, as a self-proclaimed beverage queen, I indulged in four drinks every morning: freshly squeezed orange juice, a banana smoothie, water, and a spiced cafe de olla.

During the day, the swim-up Pool Bar offers cocktails, and you can order not-so-small bites, like ceviche, al pastor tacos, fish tempura, and fried shrimp, to the daybeds around the infinity pool.

But there's also Roca Bar — the name is a tribute to the rock formations Los Cabos is famous for — which is a casual spot for drinks and small bites right next to the pool. You can sit inside and enjoy views of the Sea of Cortez while feasting on dishes like tuna tostadas, ceviche, fish tacos, and more regional fare. (In the evening, Roca Bar's terrace transforms into a spot to enjoy the starry skies.)

And, of course, the aforementioned in-room dining is available around the clock — including nachos you can feast on at any hour.

If the on-site dining options weren't enough, guests of Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos can eat at the five restaurants at Grand Velas Los Cabos next door: Cocina de Autor, Velas 10, Frida, Piaf (French), and Lucca (Italian). All of these dining venues are available to Grand Velas Boutique guests at no extra charge.

"Everything we have in terms of gastronomy at Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos is different from what you have in Grand Velas Los Cabos, but they also complement each other," Ruiz said.

Experiences, Amenities, and Spa

The shining star of the property is its oceanfront infinity pool. And for those who want a little more ocean action, there are even umbrellas and daybeds on the beach, where I hung out keeping my eyes peeled for signs of whales.

The all-inclusive includes an array of tasting experiences. In the Agave tasting room, there is a curated selection of tequila and mezcal, and plenty of tequila tastings on offer. (I had a wine and cheese pairing here that spotlighted local vinos under the helm of the property's sommelier, which included a sheep's cheese from Chiapas paired with a 2022 bottle of Xolo from Valle de Guadalupe.)

There's also an outpost of SE Spa, featuring four ocean-view treatment rooms — two are dedicated to couples treatments. There are an array of signature treatments like “Sounds of the Ocean,” which is a massage coupled with sound-bowl therapy. There's also the “Ice and Fire Therapy" treatment, which uses hot obsidian stones and cold marble stones to stimulate blood circulation. (Treatments will use skin care products from EviDenS de Beauté, Natura Bisse, and Babor.)

No matter what you pick, all treatments include a Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos signature wellness ceremony, which brings guests through a sauna, steam room, ice room, and jacuzzi, and ends with a dip in the magnesium pool.

Between the dining options and experiences on-site, there's no need to leave the property. But should you want to, every guest gets a personal concierge, who can coordinate add-on excursions like whale watching, a sunset tour of the iconic arc (El Arco De Cabo), and a visit to Land's End, which is where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean.

The Location

Travelers can fly to and from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), which is a half-hour drive from Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos. The hotel sits along the Tourist Corridor of Los Cabos, which is also known as "El Corredor" by locals, and is a 20-minute drive from the resort city of Cabo San Lucas and a 15-minute drive from San José Del Cabo. The boutique property is next to two other Velas properties: Mar del Cabo and Grand Velas Los Cabos .

Accessibility and Sustainability

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos has elevators and wheelchair ramps, and there are two accessible suites. The pool has access rails. And for guests who want to visit a neighboring property, there is a golf cart service that shuttles you door to door between each resort.

The hotel encourages its guests to reuse sheets and towels instead of requesting a daily replacement. To curb food waste, the kitchen prepares daily based on occupancy and has a system in place to find ways to repurpose fresh ingredients. For instance, vegetables are turned into slow-cooked dishes and broth, and fruits are proactively used in smoothies and to garnish salads.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos is part of the I Prefer Hotel Rewards program, which lets travelers book with points earned previously. The hotel also has seasonal pre-sales (so, look for summer pre-sales in the spring, and fall pre-sales in the summer) that offer discounts on airport transportation and spa credits. Nightly room rates at Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos start at $600 per person for double occupancy. The rates include all food and beverage with 24-hour room service, taxes, and gratuity. As summer peaks, travelers yearning for a blend of beachside tranquility and desert escapades set their sights on Los Cabos. Thoughtful packing can transform a pleasant trip into an extraordinary journey so we’ve put together the ultimate packing list for an unforgettable summer escape to Baja California Sur.

packing list 1

Pack Protection

First and foremost, safeguarding against the elements while preserving our natural surroundings is paramount. Pack reef-safe sunscreen to shield the skin and preserve Los Cabos’ coral reefs and the marine life inhabiting these underwater ecosystems. A wide-brimmed hat and polarized sunglasses are indispensable for protection from the intense summer sun, ensuring comfort while exploring our beaches, farms, and deserts. These essentials will help maintain a healthy glow while soaking in the scenic splendor of Los Cabos.

Clothing Essentials

For the Baja California Sur climate, attire made from lightweight, breathable fabrics is ideal. Linen shirts, cotton dresses, and quick-dry shorts offer both comfort and style, seamlessly transitioning from beach lounging to dining in town. Multiple swimsuits are essential, given the allure of the crystal-clear waters of the Sea of Cortes and the opulent resort pools. To prepare for the varied terrains and diverse activities, pack appropriate footwear from water shoes to protect feet on rocky beaches to hiking boots for rugged mountain hikes.

Those eager to explore the underwater wonders of Los Cabos can pack surfing, snorkeling, and scuba gear for spontaneous sea excursions. However, many tour guides provide equipment for loan or rental. Waterproof enclosures for mobile devices and cameras are essential for preserving extraordinary moments, from observing cetaceans in the Sea of Cortés to navigating the waters surrounding the iconic Arch.

Evening Comfort

Visitors heading out after sunset to experience the thriving nightlife and award-winning gastronomy scenes of Los Cabos should bring along a light jacket or wrap, expecting a drop in temperatures. To wander the cobblestone streets of charming towns like San José del Cabo, bring comfortable walking shoes. Los Cabos offers a wide array of casual dining options but those booking a reservation at one of our Michelin-awarded restaurants should plan to bring upscale resort attire.
