Day 01: Ooty arrival from Hyderabad

Morning arrive at Ooty. On arrival check in to hotel. After reaching, visit Ooty Lake, approximately 2 kms from Ooty-a popular destination for picnicking, paddle boating and enjoying Ooty leisurely. Its scenic beauty is really mesmirizing. The Lake is surrounded by Eucalyptus trees and greenery all around. Next we will visit Rose Garden-near Vijayanagaram with around 3600 varieties of roses. It is the largest rose garden in India.This garden was recognized as the ‘Garden of Excellence’ by the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS).

Next to that we have Botanical Garden– visit the magical place. A pleasant green space away from the craziness of city. It’s just like a park with full of greenery around you- do nothing just admire the beauty. Have your lunch and visit to Doddabetta Peak- it’s literally a big mountain-4 th highest peak in South India-wonderful trekking point. Day 02: Ooty & Coonoor Local Sightseeing

After breakfast Proceed to Coonoor. Enjoy the toy train. Coonoor Sight seeing(Sim’s Park, Lam’s Rock, Dolphin Nose and Ketti Valley – beautiful scenic views of the valley). Also visit Tea factory, Tea Museum and Doddabetta Peak – highest peak of the Nilgiri mountain range. Overnight stay at Ooty.

Day 03: Ooty to Kodaikanal Local

Tourist E-Pass to enter Ooty & Kodaikanal: Will it lead to better experience for tourists or impact tourism revenue?

I n summer, Ooty and Kodaikanal are among the two most visited destinations in Tamil Nadu. However, this year, if you're planning an impromptu trip to these hill stations, it might not be so easy. Recently, the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu government to introduce an e-pass system for vehicles entering the Nilgiris, Ooty, and Kodaikanal from May 7 till June 30, 2024. This measure is aimed at reducing congestion in these hill stations during the busy summer season.

'E-pass is for tourists' benefit' Carrying capacity is a very important element for any destination when we look at sustainability. The overall experience of tourists will be impacted if vehicles are lined up in the ghat section due to traffic jams. So, this decision might lead to a better experience. On the bright side, everything will be online. Even during COVID, we adapted to it. And this isn’t permanent and is solely for the summer. Tourists should understand this is for their own benefit.

'Tourists from other states will go elsewhere' Tamil Nadu's beauty lies in its tourism, but we've let ourselves down with poor planning, which is really disheartening. The Western Ghats is a stunning spot for eco-tourism and trekking, but we've failed to maintain it properly. This e-pass system feels like a last-minute solution. To make things work, the government shouldn't just enforce rules but also listen to suggestions from travel agents, hoteliers and guides. The e-pass system raises a lot of questions. Because of this rule, tourists coming here from other states will be hit the hardest. They might want to enjoy the wonders of Tamil Nadu, but this could make them rethink and go somewhere else. It might lower tourist numbers, and impact tourism revenue

'The purpose is to check the carrying capacity of these hill stations' This will be a great way to assess the number of tourists, stays and number of vehicles in Ooty and Kodaikanal, as the data is collected based on the number of e-pass issued to the tourists. The main purpose is to check the carrying capacity of these hill stations. The e-pass will be issued based on the assessment and no restrictions are limiting the number of people like the time of Covid rather this will enhance and extend the facilities needed for the tourists.

'Easily available without paying anything' There are no criteria for issuing e-passes, it is easily available to the public without having to even pay a single penny. There are two key aspects that we are focusing on. One is to count the number of tourists from across India and foreigners visiting Udhagamandalam during the season, particularly on weekends, and every day until June. Secondly, we found out that in Nilgiris, accommodation establishments and the number of stays have a carrying capacity of 45,000. But tourists are still unable to find accommodation and are staying on the roadside and bus stops, so we wanted to find a solution.

'E-pass has messed up our travel plans' Our family usually plans a trip to Ooty and Kodaikanal once a year, but this new e-pass system has thrown us off. We're worried because we don't know how it works. It's messed up our plans because we'll need time to figure it all out. Lots of tourists from other states will face trouble as they may not know how this system works.

This system might ruin our livelihoods, say residents After the COVID lockdown, they're bringing back this e-pass system, and it's not just the tourists who will have trouble. Residents of these hill stations will be hit hard because most of their jobs rely on tourism. Over 85% of them depend on tourists. If visitors can't come here, they'll just choose another place which doesn't have an e-pass system. Half of Ooty's economy comes from tourists, and this system might ruin our livelihoods.

How to obtain an e-pass? Tourists who plan to visit either of these hill stations should log in to https://epass.tnega.org/home . Once they provide the details required, like the purpose of visit, number of passengers, and vehicle, they will be able to generate an e-pass, which will have a QR code for authentication at checkpoints.

'Masinagudy vazhi Ooty' trips and Wayanad tourism suffer due to Madras HC restrictions

Kalpetta: The tourism sector in Wayanad suffered a setback when the Madras High Court recently ordered restrictions on the viral ‘Ooty via Masinagudy’ trips. The Court took this drastic step considering the uncontrollable crowds and the harsh summer that has led to water shortages in many places. However, this order has indirectly affected the tourism prospects of Wayanad which lies close to Ooty. The latest order by the highest court in our neighbouring state has made a dent in the tourism industry in Wayanad which was already struggling.

All the major tourism spots in the district remain shut after the eco-tourism centres were closed down a few months ago. Most people came to Wayanad on two–day tour packages that involved many places in Wayanad and Ooty. After the restrictions came into place, tourists have been reluctant to visit Ooty. As a result, trips to Wayanad too began getting cancelled. The restrictions are valid from May 7 to June 30. The High Court ordered that only those who have e–pass should be allowed to enter Ooty.

Eco–tourist centres closed down The eco-tourism centres in Wayanad were closed down following a few cases of attacks by wild animals. This led to the shutting down of around seven major tourist attractions in the district. Anish B Nair, an office bearer of the Hotel and Restaurant Association says that most people cut down their two–day trip to Wayanad to just a single day. Earlier, tourists who came from the southern districts preferred spending at least two days in Wayanad. However, since the eco-tourism centres were closed down, they opted to travel to Ooty from Wayanad.

Visitors from the southern districts would begin their journey the previous night and reach Wayanad by morning. After visiting the various tourist spots, they spent the night in Wayanad. The next morning, they travelled to Ooty and returned to Kerala by evening. Many tour operators were keen to book rooms in Wayanad as the room rent is quite pricey in Ooty. When restrictions are imposed on tourists to Ooty, people are less likely to visit Wayanad alone, especially because the eco-tourism centres here remain closed. Compared to last year, there has been a decline of around 30% in the number of tourists visiting Wayanad. Anish says that it may go up to 50% considering the latest restrictions in Ooty.

Water shortage, traffic blocks in Ooty As crowds began swarming Ooty, heavy traffic blocks became a common thing. The authorities were finding it difficult to control the heavy traffic and crowds. People had to wait for hours in the traffic blocks from Gudallur to Ooty. Meanwhile, the water resources too dried up in the harsh summer. The water shortage has become so severe that the beds of some of the dams in Ooty are visible. The functioning of the hotels has also been affected due to water shortage. Moreover, the uncontrollable crowds in the forest areas and the increase in the number of vehicles have begun taking a toll on the environment too. At this point, the Court was forced to intervene and issued the order imposing restrictions.

The daily lives of the residents too were affected as the number of tourists reaching Ooty on holidays broke all limits. Besides, accidents became common in the mountain passes as the vehicles of tourists from Kerala got stuck here in unending lines. Those who began their journey from Gudallur early in the morning could manage to reach Ooty only by midnight. It is estimated that around 20,000 vehicles reach Ooty daily. Even though the restrictions may bring joy to the residents of Ooty, those who work in the tourism industry aren’t thrilled. The viral route to Ooty via Bathery – Gundelpet – Masinagudy was in fact an alternative to the Gudallur route. It is assumed that the restrictions in this route too may affect the tourism prospects of Wayanad district.

Madras HC introduces e-pass for The Nilgiris ahead of the Ooty Flower Festival

The Queen of Hill Stations — Ooty — situated in The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, is all set to welcome the 2024 edition of the Ooty Flower Festival , which is a six-day celebration of floral magnificence, scheduled from May 17 to May 22.
