“Best” is always subjective and yes there are many other great takes on quotes that can inspire one to travel or speak to why the idea of travel is so powerful and life-changing.

Below, we’re going to be listing the best travel quotes with the associated person that wrote or said them. We’ve created pin-able images for many of the quotes for you to use and share.

For organization, wanderlust inspired quotes are broken down into high level categories. Some may belong to multiple but I tried my best to segment them into appropriate buckets.

We’ve also dropped a few nuggets of wisdom and color commentary for a few that we really love.

As we mentioned, the selection of the “best” quotes is subjective. Every quote speaks to every individual differently because of where you are in your life, the experiences you’ve had, your mind space, where you want to be, and your aspirations.

These are the best in our eyes because they aren’t deep in meaning and haven’t been overused to death.

1. “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

do not follow where the path may lead and create your own is one of the best travel quotes by ralph waldo emerson

Passed on from generation to generation is the idea that we need to fit in our own box and follow the norms set for us. It can be societal, cultural, or anything. We’ve found joy in our lives not following that conventional path.

Starting Going Awesome Places and turning it into a full time job sounded crazy (still kind of is) but we carved our own way through it. Sure there are parallel paths but I’d like to think we’ve blazed our own trail.

2. “We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone.” – Katie Thurmes

we take photos as a return ticket to our memories northern lights with bubble by katie thurmes

I’ll be the first to admit that we take way too many photos when we travel but when we go back and look at the own albums (whether on our phones or photobooks we print), it really is a wonderful portal back in time to moments and time gone but not forgotten.

3. “This wasn’t a strange place; it was a new one.” – Paulo Coelho

this wasn't a strange place paulo coelho best travel quote in the magdalen islands

Take the incredible journey I had in our 9 day Ethiopia itinerary . Sure it was uncomfortable and challenging but I embraced it all.

4. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

journey of a thousand miles travel quote by lao tzu

You can make your dreams come true with a simple step. It might be the hardest step that you’ve ever had to take because you don’t know where the journey will take you but all it takes are the first baby steps.

Sometimes it can be literal when you take that step off the plane when we went skydiving in New Zealand .

5. “I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

the moon shines on the other side of the world new zealand tongariro hike mary anne radmacher

Where we grow up in many ways define who we are and what we know. Like it or not, places like our favorite restaurants in North York , the Oxford County Cheese Trail , or local walks in the parks in Richmond Hill , are a core part of who you are.

It’s our own little bubble and when we are able to bust out of it to see what the world is like, it will challenge you to open your eyes, mind, and be a better person. In Mary’s words, you will never be the same again.

6. “Wanderlust: a strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world”

comfort in losing sight of the shore wanderlust quote by andre gide

My mind immediately went to the new worlds we’ve seen while going to the best places to scuba diving in the world but this is one of the best quotes about travel because it encourages us to leave the comforts of home to make new discoveries.

You can take this from the perspective of us being land mammals or the fact that we naturally want to be close to the things that we feel at home with. Whether small or large, you won’t learn something new until you put yourself out there and venture to places unknown.

And no, it’s not just “man” but all the wonderful people of this earth!

As a married couple, there’s a deep honesty to this travel quote. As a couple, travel will test your relationship to the max and we always say that even more -so than moving in is to go on a trip together to see if you have partner in life.

Travel is the greatest teacher of them all. It’s something that has truly opened my mind and is something that more of us need. I’d like to think that we don’t travel for travel’s sake but we do it with purpose – to open our minds, break barriers, and gain broader understanding of the world.

13. “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” – Gustave Flaubert

Airport Parking: You’ll need a spot to leave your car at the airport so why not book a spot at a discount. Use code AWESOME7 to get at least $5 off at Airport Parking Reservations or Park Sleep Fly packages.

Wifi Hotspot: We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices such as PokeFi (use code GAP24300 ) because their rates are are hard to beat and it works globally. Solis is another that we recommend. Pros are that you can share the wifi with your whole group but cons are that you have to invest in a device and you have to charge it every night.

eSIM: Lately, we’ve really loved using eSIMs. The one we find using the most is Airalo . Save money by getting region-specific eSIMs and use referral code WILLIA9500 to get $3 USD credit on your first purchase. Ubigi is another one that we’ve had success with where they uniquely offer 5G coverage. Use code AWESOME10 to save 10% on your first order. The newest eSIM we’ve tried is KnowRoaming that sneakily has great rates on unlimited plans. We’ve partnered with them to give you a custom code GAP10 to save you 10%.

Hotels: Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts . Expedia is also worth using especially with their One Key rewards program which is basically like cash. The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. Always do a quick check on TripAdvisor as well.

Vacation Rentals: Your first instinct will be to check Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental (now eligible for One Key ).

Tours: When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.

Travel Insurance: Learn how to buy the best travel insurance for you. This isn’t something you want to travel without.

  • HeyMondo – Popular insurance provider for frequent travelers and comes with great coverage and special perks.
  • RATESDOTCA – Search engine Canadians looking for the cheapest insurance including multi-trip annual policies.
  • SafetyWing – A perfect fit for long-term nomads.
  • Medjet – Global air medical transportation.
  • InsureMyTrip – Best for seniors, families, and those with pre-existing conditions.

There’s Actually A Scientific Reason You Feel The Urge To Travel

not just travel wanderlust

If you're constantly daydreaming about traveling the world, rarely feel settled in one place, and get a case of the itchy feet regularly, you probably have wanderlust. But indulging in this urge to travel often takes up more resources than we may readily have available — for one, it's expensive, and for another, it's pretty inconvenient, requiring you to pick up your life for a few days and deal with the consequences of missing them. Obviously traveling is worth it, when you're able, but these inconveniences beg the question: why do we like to travel so much? Turns out that there's a scientific reason our suitcase is always half packed.

Wanderlust is strongly embedded in human evolutionary history. Modern humans, it's estimated, lived in nomadic communities for as much as 99 percent of our history , following the seasons, hunting, opportunities and ritual patterns. Sometime around 10,000 years ago, agriculture , aka the skill to harvest crops in one place that could feed bigger communities, was developed. The catch? You had to stay in that area to tend the things you were growing. Human settlements popped up, people stayed and had kids, and gradually villages became towns and then cities. But a nomadic urge isn't unnatural; if the situation in one place seems dire, it's always made good evolutionary sense to pack up and move on, even if in today's world you actually have rent to pay and a 9-to-5.

The feeling behind wanderlust doesn't necessarily have to do with the glamor of getting on a plane, though there isn't too much that's glamorous about air travel anymore. It's about novelty: seeing new places and new things. Human brains are acutely attuned to novelty and find it deeply pleasurable. We seek new and interesting things all the time, and our brain makes completely novel information "stand out." Various neurons have the specific job of finding novel things , and can distinguish between sights you've never seen before and stuff you saw once many years ago.

Why? Because curiosity and pleasure at discovering unfamiliar stuff are also a major evolutionary advantage. When you want to go to a place you've only ever seen in travel brochures, you're playing into an age-old reward system in your brain that gives you dopamine hits for new experiences that can help you understand the world around you. Thanks to a characteristic called neoteny , which means that we tend to act more child-like than other primates even when we're grown up, humans retain childlike curiosity and a desire to try new things into our adulthood. In many other species that tendency stops at maturity, if it exists at all.

Interestingly, a study in 2015 highlighted a genetic variant, DRD4-7R, that could be related to the desire to wander. It was immediately touted as "the wanderlust gene" , but genetic reality is a lot more complicated; DRD4-7R appears to be tied to a greater likelihood for novelty-seeking behavior , impulsivity and adventurousness. Researchers hasten to point out that there isn't just one gene responsible for anybody's wanderlust tendencies, but some of the science behind DRD4-7R is very intriguing. It's an unproven hypothesis that migration in your past might make you more full of wanderlust now, but it's an interesting idea.

The flipside of the novelty coin is also fear of boredom. Humans hate boredom and will do a lot to get away from it. The poet Joseph Brodsky, in a commencement speech at Dartmouth College in 1989 , told students, "Whether rich or poor, you will inevitably be afflicted by monotony. Potential haves, you’ll be bored with your work, your friends, your spouses, your lovers, the view from your window, the furniture or wallpaper in your room, your thoughts, yourselves. Accordingly, you’ll try to devise ways of escape [....] changing your job, residence, company, country, climate." The problem with that, Brodsky explained, was obvious: that you'll wake up eventually feeling the same sense of boredom and have to change everything all over again. Sometimes we experience wanderlust because we want to get away from the familiar, and travel represents the best way to do it.

If you're feeling the urge to pack up your life and run to somewhere else, there are good scientific reasons for that sensation, from a need for novelty to a potential genetic "push". Go get those new passport stamps.

50 Travel Quotes Sure to Inspire Wanderlust

not just travel wanderlust

I am a sucker for travel quotes. I read them and instantly feel inspired. I write them in margins of journals, find inspiration for posts in them and even create travel mantras. I also love sharing my favorites with fellow-travelers. I’ve shared them in various forms here on For the Love of Wanderlust, but today I’m sharing my favorite 50 Travel Quotes.

not just travel wanderlust

For the Love of Wanderlust’s Favorite 50 Travel Quotes:

“Most travelers hurry too much… the great thing is to stray and travel with eyes of the spirit wide open, and not too much factual information. To tune in, without reverence, idly– but with real inward attention. It is to be had for the feeling…. You can extract the essence of a place once you know how. If you just get as still a needle, you’ll be there.” Lawrence Durrell

50 Travel Quotes

“Please be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live in.” Andrew Zimmern

not just travel wanderlust

“You get a strange feeling when you’re about to leave a place. Like you’ll not only miss the people you love, but you’ll miss the person you are now at this time and this place, because you’ll never be this way ever again.” Azar Nafisi

not just travel wanderlust

If you’re brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting, which can be anything from your house to bitter, old, resentments and out on a truth-seeking journey, either externally or internally, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher and if you are prepared, most of all, to face and forgive some very difficult realities about yourself, then the truth will not be withheld from you.” Elizabeth Gilbert

not just travel wanderlust

“Let’s not travel to tick things off lists or collect half-hearted, semi-treasures to be places in dusty drawers in empty rooms. Rather, we’ll travel to find grounds and rooftops and tiny hidden parks, where we’ll sit and dismiss the passing time, spun in the city’s web ’til we’ve surrendered, content to be spent and consumed. I need to feel a place while I’m in it.” Victoria Erickson

not just travel wanderlust

“(Travel is) humbling to the point where you have major regrets about some of the stupid things you said, some of the things you thought were right. You keep going to these countries, and it’s like you forgot the lesson from the last time. But the first person you encounter kind-of bitch-slaps you upside the head in the most wonderful innocent way, and you realize, God, I’m still an asshole . And this guy, by doing nothing except being broke and so incredibly polite – it takes you aback,  you realize, I’m still not there yet. I still have, like, eight miles to go before I can even get into the parking lot of humility. I have to keep going back. It’s like going back to the chiropractor to get a readjustment . That’s me in Africa; that’s me in SE Asia. You come back humbled and you bring that into your life.” Henry Rollins

not just travel wanderlust

“When it is over, I don’t want to wonder if I have made of my life, something particular and real. I don’t want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.” Mary Oliver

not just travel wanderlust

“I want a life measured in first steps on foreign soils and deep breaths in brand new seas. I want a life measured in welcome signs, each stamped with a different name, borders marked with metal and paint. Show me the streets that don’t know the muse of my wandering feet and I will play their song upon them. Perfume me please in the smells of faraway, I will never wash my hair if it promises to stay. I want a life measured in the places I haven’t gone, short sleeps on long flights, new words to describe the dawn.” Tyler Knott Gregson
“I’d like to repeat the advice that I gave you before, in that I think you really should make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” John Krakauer
“The wish to travel seems to me characteristically human; the desire to move, to satisfy your curiosity or ease your fears, to henge the circumstances of your life, to be a stranger, to make a friend, to experience an exotic landscape, to risk the unknown, to bear witness to the consequences, tragic or comic, of the people possessed by the narcissism of minor differences.” Paul Theroux
“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you – it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart and on your body. You take something with you… Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” Anthony Bourdain

not just travel wanderlust

“People often ask me how I have managed to have so many interesting people – experiences in my nomadic wanderings. It’s because I trust; I always have. It’s not something that has developed with experience, though perhaps with constant reinforcement I do it more often. I’ve never been disappointed, though I’ve sometimes been surprised. I know there’s a risk but it’s one I’m willing to take. My life is constantly enriched because I trust people.” Rita Golden Gelman

not just travel wanderlust

Travel is little beds and cramped bathrooms. It’s old television sets and slow internet connections. Travel is extraordinary conversations with ordinary people. It’s waiters, gas station attendants and housekeepers becoming the most interesting people in the world. It’s churches that are compelling enough to enter. It’s McDonald’s being a luxury. It’s the realization that you may have been born in the wrong country. Travel is a smile that leads to a conversation in broken English. It’s the epiphany that pretty girls smile the same way all over the world. Travel is tipping 10% and being embraced for it. Travel is the same white t-shirt again tomorrow. Travel is accented sex after good wine and to many unfiltered cigarettes. Travel is flowing in the back of a bus with giggly strangers. It’s a street full of beard backpackers looking down at maps. Travel is wishing for one more bite of whatever that just was. It’s the rediscovery of walking somewhere. It’s sharing a bottle of liquor on an overnight train with a new friend. Travel is, ‘Maybe I don’t have to do it that way when I get back home.’ It’s nostalgia for studying abroad that one semester. Travel is realizing that ‘age thirty’ should be shed of its goddam stigma.” Nick Miller

not just travel wanderlust

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many place I have still to go, how much more there is to learn. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise and how far I have yet to go.” Anthony Bourdain

not just travel wanderlust

“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.  So, throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.   Explore.  Dream.  Discover.” Mark Twain

Thanks for putting together this amazing compliation of quotes, I think that travel quotes both inspire the passion for travel, and also inspire reflection, on the things we’ve learned through our experiences, and remind us of our memories. I think it’s impossible to choose a favorite from such a long list though!

I agree. They’re multi-faceted and there’s a quote for any type of traveler as well. I love a boost of inspiration.

Sandy N Vyjay

These are all so inspiring and bring alive the spirit of travel. Indeed I fee that blessed are the people who travel for they get to see and experience what others don’t. Life is definitely not fully lived if you do not travel.

I absolutely agree with that. I’ve never found something else that has done so much for me. Travel is fun, an educator, trying, beautiful and unifying, all at the same time!

' src=

AuthenticTravels

Oh, this is such a wonderful idea and an inspirational post. You know, at the beginning of my blog, I had started to collect travel quotes and I was planning to write + comment one /week. I am very happy to see that you found the time to do this awesome job. I think that the quote I resonate now is the one referring to how small we are in this world. I would add my favorite quote too:”we live to discover beauty, all else is a form of waiting.” (Kahlil Gibran)

That’s a beautiful quote! There are so many. Maybe I’ll have a 50 more post some time! They’re really fun to collect aren’t they?

' src=

What a fantastic selection of quotes! I think my favourites are the ones by Gustave Flaubert and Anita Desai. I definitely try to bring back some of the good parts of travelling and I don’t mean souvenirs, but healthier or more relaxed ways of living

I completely agree. Those are the best kinds of souvenirs! I have to admit they usually go by the wayside after time, but that’s a great excuse for a refresher and more travel!

You have compiled my favorite quotes in one post. I cant help but keep going back to pick my favorite travel quote. I think travel shows we need to modest in our day to day lives.

I completely agree. I remember when I came home from my first long-term trip, I came home and purged everything and donated so much to Goodwill. It teaches you how little you truly need to be happy.

I love that you created pins for this quotes:) many of these are new to me and it is so inspiring to read. It is hard to pick a favourite though. These quotes makes you really appreciate the wanderlust when people might say travelling is useless etc. Thank you so much for this post 🙂

Thank you! It was really time consuming, but also a lot of fun! I also love to reference quotes when people make judgy statements about travel being useless. Thanks for reading!

Thank you! It was time-consuming but also a lot of fun! They really do make good responses to people who think traveling is foolish or a waste of time/money.

' src=

I love travel quotes and they are always so good! My favorite from these was this one from Andrew Zimmern. I never really thought about those two words in depth: traveler and tourist. Now every time I think of those words I will remember his quote 🙂

Yeah it’s an interesting idea. I remember when this sparked a huge debate a couple of years ago. I think everyone has their own styler, but I’d rather travel that take a vacation/holiday so it’s a good reminder to me and my travel-style.

' src=

These are some amazing quotes! It’s nice to stumble upon the not so “cliche” ones. I love the one by Jeff Johnson. Definitely saving this list for later when I need a little travel inspo.

I love that one too. It’s from the travel film 180 South. Super inspiring, I would highly recommend it, especially if you’re a Nature-lover.

' src=

They are all such great quotes and I can personally connect to more than a few of them ! I am actually saving some 🙂

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed them! I tried to share my favorite, less cliche quotes.

' src=

I love reading about travel quotes, especially those non-clique ones 😛 My favourite from this post is the “Travel isn’t always pretty” by Anthony Bourdain. People always think travel is fun (and glamorous) all the time, but it is not! I feel especially so this year!

' src=

Anne @TravelTheGlobe (@TTGLOBE4L)

Saved to Flipboard. I love these but when I want one can never find one. What a great resource I now have

' src=

I love love love travel quotes and this is a great list that you have put together here. I am definitely going to pin this for later on when I am in need of some motivation or just inspiration. It is hard to pick one favorite as I like so many of them.

' src=

Sonal of Drifter Planet

Love this post. Reminds me of my desk job days when I used to print them and pin them on my workstation. I’d spend a lot of time looking at them everyday and then eventually decided to quit my job and to leave. 🙂

' src=

A very well compiled list of travel quotes which are sure to tickle the wanderlust in me. This post has just become my source for travel quotes in the near future. Thanks a bunch! Cheers.

' src=

“Travel is not a reward for working, it’s an education for living.” Can I just say WOW? My mind is blown! Love that these quotes are not the cliche offering and that there are so many of them I haven’t heard. Revisiting this post so I can bookmark everything!

' src=

Claire 🌍 (@clairesturz)

I do love a good travel quote! I was getting tired of the same ones though, but you’ve got some I hadn’t seen here before. I like Anthony Bourdain’s – travel isn’t always pretty for sure, but it definitely has changed me. I’m a different person now than I was when I left, for sure!

' src=

Love all these quotes! So inspiring!

' src=

nickwheatley

I am with you – I absolutely love travel quotes! When my wife and I were starting our first extended trip abroad I gave her a travel journal in which I inscribed a quote to get her started – now she always asks me to write travel quotes in her journals. This is such a great list and has many I have never heard of before – thanks for compiling!

' src=

I love these! There are so many in here that I haven’t ever heard. Not your typical quotes. Love the Angelina Jolie one all the Jack Kerouac ones!

' src=

Tamara Elliott

I love these! I think my favourite one is about the stories found between passport pages. So good!

' src=

Jenn and Ed Coleman

I really like the construction of this article. Well done. My favorite quote today was “there is nothing that the road cannot fix”. That seems apropos as we are returning back to Tucson AZ this weekend. So much of my life, triumph and heartache has been centered around this city. I can only realize how much the road has set me free when I am engulfed in all of the city’s familiarity and ghosts.

' src=

Eric Gamble

I love this. I think I love the Edward Abbey, The Buffalo Bill, & the Mark Twain quotes the most. I am always restless and wanderlusting cause I cant imagine I was put on this gigantic planet just to hangout in one tiny place.

' src=

thewanderingcore

The quote by where Azar Nafisi where he says “You get a strange feeling while leaving a place…” That’s my feeling for everywhere I’ve been to and I think that’s what I crave for. What a truly beautiful collection where your described travel not as hobby or even as a passion but as a way to live life fully. Just wonderful post.

' src=

Wow, there are so many great quotes! My favorite travel quote Comes actually from the movie “The Hobbit”. “I’m going on an adventure!” Sums travelling pretty much up 😀

' src=

forever roaming the world

Some really great quotes here 😀 – I have to say sometimes I have to stop myself reading travel quotes because I want to get back out on the road haha. After reading through these it’s happening to me right now haha.

' src=

“All you have to do is dicide to go and the hardest part is over”- So true, so many people talk about traveling but few book the ticket

' src=

Traveling Well For Less

What an interesting mix of travel quotes. They really range the gamut. Of all them, the Michael Palin quote is my favorite.

' src=

Wow! Amazing how many quotes there are about traveling. Though my vaforite remains: Just go our and travel!

Happy continued travels! C

' src=

London-Unattached.com

Some great quotes here! I’ve seen a few of them but some are quite new to me.

' src=

WorldGlimpses

Love that one by Gustave Flaubert that “travel makes you modest”. That’s so true! When you see the diversity of the world, you can only get impatient to learn more and stand in awe before that grandeur of the globe! The only way to respect other cultures is to meet them and learn about them. Only then you should ask for respect for the “tiny space that you occupy”. 🙂

' src=

Jody Robbins

These are so good! I had no idea there were so many inspirational travel quotes out there. It often comes back to the same thing thought- be open and ready to learn.

' src=

WanderingCarol

It’s hard to go wrong with Kerouac and Sylvia Plath! So let’s keep rolling under the stars and follow our crooked paths.

' src=

I love your idea of gathering travel quotes! They are so inspirational. I actually never know there are so many travel quotes as I never actively seek out for them. I especially like the one about “travel makes you modest” – travelers really need to remember this!

' src=

Patricia Steffy (@PLSteffy)

These are great travel quotes, and most I’ve never read before (double bonus points). I think my favorite is the Anita Desai quote “where you go becomes a part of you somehow” (also amazing picture). It really resonates because I think I really have absorbed, to some degree, some element of every place I’ve been to — even from my travels with my parents when I was a toddler!

' src=

Sara Broers (@TravelWithSara)

I love all of these. I am always looking for “that” one quote. I particularly like Mark Twain’s quote, as we all get caught up in our day and in all reality, in 20 years, what will matter? Thanks for putting this together, as I’m bookmarking this for future reference.

' src=

This is a great collection of travel quotes. It’s hard to choose a favorite! Can’t go wrong with Twain or Bourdain though. 😉 Explore. Dream. Discover. All the way!

' src=

Love the quote by Anthony Bourdain. “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you – it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart and on your body. You take something with you… Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” I’ve been on the road a lot in my life, broke, uncomfortable and heartbroken. Through all that I’ve learned so much!

' src=

I’m always looking up travel quotes more than any other! I love the inspiration behind them, and a lot of them seem to work in accordance with my beliefs. Thanks for putting them all in one place!

' src=

wow! This was an amazing page. to keep this brief I will share the names of my favorites: Martien Vercruysse, Paul Theroux, Michael Mewshaw, Rita Golden Gelman, Nick Miller, Mark Twain. And I loved the unknown quote: “Of all the books in the world, the best stories are found between the pages of a passport.” Loved this post alot.

Is Wanderlust Due to Nature or Nurture? Here's What You Said

Dubrovnik Croatia

Last week, we shared a few stories about how travel can scientifically change your life . In one, editors Mark Ellwood and Laura Redman investigated the “ wanderlust gene ”—DRD4-7R, to be precise—that may genetically predispose nearly 20 percent of the world's population to “restlessness and curiosity.” In another, contributor Eliot Stein explored "dromomania," a diagnosable impulse-control disorder that basically translates to travel addiction .

We heard from so many Traveler readers who self-diagnosed themselves with 'vagabond neurosis' or claimed to have the controversial gene. But in trawling through our Facebook comments, it all came down to one real question: are you born with the travel bug or can you (and the people around you) come down with it? Here's what you said.

Nature: "It's in the genes."

"My grandparents sold their house and lived in a RV for 15 years, traveling all across the country. My mom moved us to another country when I was three and my dad took me to Jamaica when I was 13. I often have dreams I'm on a plane traveling to another country. For me, it's in the genes." —K.L. Hope C.

"I got it too! I wonder if some places have a higher pull due to ancestry or past lives? I have been to Ireland 3 times but it is calling again. As I wander its green hills and valleys I feel an ancient tie." —Stacy F.

"My mom and her mom loved to explore... I have been to over 16 countries... I think my oldest daughter is following suit (case)!" —Heidi L.

"My mom always said I inherited my dad's 'itchy feet.' He had a wanderlust too." —Rae T.

"Just back from Bulgaria and Istanbul today! I have been traveling since I was 18 and I love it...I'm 63 now and I don't plan to stop!" —Susan S.S.

Nurture: "I started late... and haven't stopped yet."

"Growing up in the Midwest, we pretty much would road trip to other parts of the Midwest, namely to visit family. Perhaps because of this I have always deeply craved seeing the world. My parents and brother, however, really aren't keen on traveling. Especially if it involves getting in a plane. I don't know where I get the wanderlust from." —Michele C.B.

"Interesting. I love it. I started late, but my first trip out was to Croatia on a job in 1997. I haven't stopped yet. I graduated to not just traveling, but living in numerous countries. I love travel books, maps, and passport stamps!" —Ruth A.

"My family never traveled anywhere, and I love to wander this planet." —Joan T.

"I am the farthest traveled person on both mom and dad's sides of the family. I hope one of my future kids make it to Mars then." —Sheri A.

not just travel wanderlust

I'm just a curious beach kid in the world.

Hello, I am Sascha Tobias Tegtmeyer from Hamburg – and a real beach child with heart and soul! Sea fan, travel lover and always up for an adventure. On my travel blog Just-Wanderlust.com and the social media channels of Strandkind Travels, I combine my love of traveling and nature with a passion for water sports such as stand-up paddling, diving and surfing. I am a journalist, author and blogger - and I am naturally curious when I get to know new travel destinations and then write about them in detail. As a technology fan, when I'm traveling with my family or alone, I'm always happy to bring a few travel gadgets with me for testing purposes. My favorite travel countries, which I also prefer to write about in my travel blog: USA, Thailand and Maldives.

The Wanderlust List of Creative Travel Words You Might Not Know

Uncover creative words that relate to wanderlust. read through our complete list of travel words along with their definitions for your caribbean journey..

You may know a lot of words, but do you know all of these? Come and take a look at the top traveler's list of wanderlust words that you can use during your next vacation in the Caribbean . Find out what each word on this list means and how to best use each one.

In this list of words, you will find some words with multiple meanings, some that have been lost to history, and others that are obscure and unique in their understanding. With each word you learn, you will begin to define wanderlust and have a lot of creative travel words for you to use on vacation.

English wanderlust travel words

The meaning of this word is quite literal. It's a lust to wander or a desire to travel. When you have wanderlust, you have that ache in your heart that needs to escape to new and beautiful places.

Nemophilist

Though you probably haven't heard this one for the last hundred years, a nemophilist is a person who adores the forests and woods. Yes, this can also include jungles.

A woman enjoying the lush jungles of the Dominican Republic

Serendipity

The idea behind finding something wonderful by chance. For example, you may be exploring the beach and find a beautiful shell with a fantastic stroke of serendipity.

This one goes deep even if it is made up. It is the realization that every person who passes you by has a life that is as rich and complicated as your own. When you travel, it opens up your mind to other cultures and gives you much chance to sonder.

Coddiwomple

Doesn't this word just sound great? We should all be using Coddiwomple more often. It is the concept of moving forward without a set destination. Whilst some apply this to travel, nowadays it is really more about how we live life.

When something is unique, unusual, extraordinary, never seen before, and just so different from anything you have ever seen, it can be described as selcouth. For example, “ I found a selcouth spot by the water where the hermit crabs seemed to gather ”

This one has two wanderlust related meanings. A modern idea is that photophiles are people who love photography and just want to go on vacation snapping pictures all the time. The real meaning behind photophile however is someone who thrives in the sunlight. “ Jim spends all day at the beach because he's a photophile ”

A man running along the beach in the Caribbean sun

Someone who seeks delights and enjoyable and pleasurable activities is a gadabout. This means that yes, if you love lavish experiences, luxurious vacations, and escape to the Caribbean whenever you can, you could refer to yourself as a gadabout.

Some things are so incredible that there just are no words to describe the experience. Thankfully when that happens we have a word to describe that. Ineffable. When something is ineffable, it goes beyond everything you could say, and every expression. You could say “ My stay in the Caribbean was… ineffable ” …its also a great copout if you can't think of any descriptive words.

People usually think of Homer's Odyssey which covers the story of a king who wandered for 10 years. However, the word in itself can be used to describe a long and exciting journey full of adventures. When are you planning your next odyssey?

We all know amphibious to mean creatures or things that can operate on land or in the water. But this word has very different original meanings. It is used to represent two modes of life. For example part time work and part time travel. Yes, you can be amphibious and not even swim.

This term has been used in many ways to describe travelers of all sorts. But really, a wayfarer is someone who travels on foot. Are you walking somewhere? Congratulations, you are a wayfarer!

Footsteps in the sand on a beach where a wayfarer has been

French and Spanish travel words

There are many concepts of paradise throughout history. In medieval times people had Cockaigne. This was an imaginary place of luxury where you could be pampered to perfection and every comfort was at hand. Sound familiar? Indeed, you could say that a luxury resort is its own Cockaigne.

Dérive

This is a true wanderlust word. It means to wander around somewhere without any real purpose or objective in mind. It's unplanned, aimless roaming for the sake of it. Even on a planned vacation, you can have a dérive by heading into town… and just seeing where the day takes you.

Flâuner

If you are a person of leisure, someone who enjoys simple strolls, pleasures, and soaking up the enjoyment of the ambiance, you could call yourself a flâuner.

Trouvaille

A very fortunate find could be noted as a trouvaille. For example, let's say that you are diving in the Caribbean Ocean and you find an empty sea urchin shell. “This shell was a true trouvaille”

A wanderlust traveler underwater exploring the Caribbean oceans

Dès Vu

This one may require some meditation. It is a state of mind, a perspective. It means to see the current moment as you look forward to the future. It's an awareness that the time right now will gain new meaning as you look back on it in the days to come.

Dépaysement

There is a burst of adrenaline that fires from being in a foreign place surrounded by different things. Whilst this word can be used in a negative way, for wanderers and travelers it is a feeling they choose to enjoy through an authentic experience and ambiance.

This Spanish word has been used for many things relating to nostalgia and care. Its deeper meaning however refers to your home away from home. It's a place that calls you where you feel comfortable, welcome, and safe. For example, “ Excellence Playa Mujeres is my Querencia”

Greek wanderlust travel words

Eudaimonia

A state of utter and complete happiness. The best version of life any human can attain. This goes beyond mere contentment and refers to not just joy but also a sense of accomplishment. It adds meaning to pleasure seeking. Some people are eudaimonic travelers.

Thalassophile

This is a word you will find on every list of beach words. It literally means a lover of the sea. So you could go to the beach and be a photophile, a hodophile, and a thalassophile all at the same time.

A thalassophile at the beach admiring the beauty of the Caribbean sea

Eleutheromania

Usually, we might think that something ending in “mania” might not be good. But in this case, it is. Eleutheromania is the intense and earnest zeal for freedom. It's an irresistible desire to escape to somewhere new and to explore. Whilst it can be related to obsession, eleutheromania is a wanderlust quality that explains the craving for vacation really well.

Strikhedonia

A word that seems to only be found on lists of words. Is it a real word? Who knows. Either way, its meaning is a really cool concept. It basically refers to being able to say “Oh, why not” in an expression of lack of concern or fear for something you are about to do. “ In a moment of strikhedonia, I decided to go swimming with a shark .”

Hodophilia is a deep love of travel, so as you might guess, a hodophile is a person who adores travel. Are you a hodophile? I know I am.

Acatalepsy

The idea of never truly fully comprehending anything. This is used for travelers a lot with the concept that you can enjoy Extraordinary Moments on vacation but never really grasp how those experiences impact your life or the person that you are.

Halcyon

Often used in reference to a past period of utter happiness. Originating from a mythical bird that could calm the waves and sea, this expression can be used to describe a time when you were on a peaceful vacation in the past. Those were your “halcyon days”.

Peripatetic

This word describes someone who likes to travel from one place to another for relatively short periods of time. You could head to Punta Cana for 3 days, then spend a week in Cancun and you would be a peripatetic traveler.

Latin wanderlust travel words

Solivagant

Nowadays we often use the expression solo travel for people who enjoy exploring distant places on their own. In the past, however, the word for solo travelers was Solivigant. For example: “ It takes a solivigant like Susan to plan their vacations by themselves and head to an unknown destination .”

Peregrinate

You have heard of Emigrate which denotes permanent moving to another country. Now get ready for Peregrinate which involves wandering from place to place. “ We decided to peregrinate over to Montego Bay ”

Wanderers in Montego Bay walking along the shore

Originally this word had a type of spiritual feeling linked to it. However it can also mean being awestruck, or a situation that takes your breath away. “ When I saw the waters glow, it was a numinous moment that I will never forget ”

Vagary

Comes from a Latin word meaning “to wander” and implies the sentiment of unforeseeable and incalculable travel to a destination. A whimsical roaming journey of unpredictable ideas. “ I booked my flight that same day and my vagary surprised everyone .”

Quaquaversal

To move in every direction at the same time. A bit like when you pack your bags and your flight leaves in an hour. It's also something that many wanderlust travelers want to do when they arrive at their destination. So much to see, so much to explore.

Novaturient

This word means to want change or something different. The desire for something new and exciting. The feeling you know all too well when you want to travel. Are you a novaturient person?

Use this list of wanderlust words!

2024 Travel trends to watch

2024 Travel trends to watch

As we strap in for the journey into 2024, the travel landscape is transforming in profound and exciting ways. Shaped by the latest global changes and a growing consciousness among travellers, this year is set to redefine how we experience the world. From the integration of technology in travel to the rise of sustainable and health-focused trips, we are witnessing a new era of exploration that values personal growth, environmental stewardship, and cultural immersion.

READ MORE: Here’s why Aussies are embracing the journey of self discovery in 2024

So, we decided that a 2024 travel trends list would be a great way of showcasing some of the insight we have gained from speaking to experts and staying abreast of the most recent changes.

Sustainable and eco-friendly travel

2024 Travel trends - sustainability is now normal for travel

Sustainability is the new luxury in travel. In 2024, eco-conscious travel is not just a preference but a deep-rooted value for many adventurers. This trend goes beyond just choosing green hotels or eco-lodges; it’s about engaging with destinations that prioritize the preservation of their natural environments and cultures.

Costa Rica, for instance, offers an exemplary model with its eco-lodges that blend seamlessly into the natural landscape, providing an immersive experience in the heart of the rainforest while ensuring minimal environmental impact. Similarly, in New Zealand, sustainable tourism initiatives are not only preserving the pristine beauty of the landscapes but also ensuring that tourism benefits local communities. This conscious travel movement is reshaping how destinations market themselves and how travellers make their choices, placing a significant emphasis on environmental and social responsibility.

Technology-enhanced travel experiences

The intersection of technology and travel is creating new dimensions in how we explore. In 2024, virtual and augmented reality are not mere novelties; they are essential tools that offer immersive exploratory experiences. These technologies are particularly transformative for historical and cultural sites.

For instance, VR technology can recreate historical events or bring extinct environments back to life, offering a window into the past that was previously unimaginable. AR, on the other hand, is enhancing the way we navigate and interact with destinations. From AR-guided city tours to interactive museum exhibits, these technologies are enriching the traveller’s experience, making learning more engaging and comprehensive.

However, this digital immersion also brings a challenge: finding the right balance between technology and the authentic, unmediated experiences that travel offers. The key lies in using these technologies to enhance, rather than replace, the real-world experience.

Off-the-beaten-path destinations

2024 is witnessing a significant shift in destination preferences. Travellers are increasingly seeking unique experiences away from crowded and popular tourist spots. This trend is about more than just finding quiet vacation spots; it’s about discovering the heart and soul of unexplored territories. Destinations like remote islands, hidden villages, and lesser-known cities are gaining popularity. This shift is not only about satisfying the wanderlust of travellers but also about distributing the benefits of tourism more evenly across the globe. By exploring these off-the-beaten-path locations, travellers are contributing to local economies that have not traditionally benefited from tourism, thus helping to alleviate the issue of overtourism in popular destinations.

This trend also presents an opportunity for travellers to engage with cultures and experiences that are not typically highlighted in travel brochures, offering a more authentic and diverse perspective of the world.

Wellness and health-focused trips

The concept of travel as a means to rejuvenate body and mind is gaining momentum in 2024. Wellness retreats are no longer niche; they have become a mainstream choice for many. These retreats offer a diverse range of experiences, from spiritual yoga retreats in Bali, where travellers can engage in meditation and mindfulness practices, to wellness cruises that combine the luxury of a cruise holiday with health-focused programs.

This trend reflects a broader societal shift towards prioritizing mental and physical well-being. More than just a holiday, these trips are viewed as an essential part of maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle. They offer a sanctuary for travellers to disconnect from the stresses of daily life and focus on self-care, be it through spa treatments, fitness activities, or nutritional programmes. The rise of wellness tourism signifies a deeper understanding among travellers that vacations can be more than just a break; they can be transformative experiences that contribute positively to one’s overall well-being.

Cultural immersion and learning experiences

In 2024, the desire for authentic travel experiences is stronger than ever. Travelers are seeking out opportunities that allow them to immerse themselves in the culture and lifestyle of their destinations. This trend is about more than just observing; it’s about participating and engaging with different cultures.

From cooking classes in the rustic kitchens of Tuscany, where travelers learn age-old recipes from local chefs, to language immersion programs in the bustling streets of Madrid, these experiences offer a deeper connection to the places visited. They are not only about seeing new places but also about learning and growing from these experiences. Hawaii travel update: this kauai trail was just named to the hall of fame. no, it’s not the kalalau trail..

The Ke Ala Hele Makālae trail runs 8 miles along the east coast of Kauai and was recently inducted ... [+] into the Rails to Trails Conservancy's Hall of Fame.

The Hawaiian Island of Kauaʻi is known for its lush beauty and, within the outdoor community, its extensive network of trails.

Hikers have long raved about several of Kauaʻi’s unique trails, including the myriad of paths in and around Waimea Canyon as well as the infamous Kalalau Trail along the Nāpali Coast, which is often featured in news articles that tout the world’s most incredible hiking trails .

But this month, another trail was given a great honor.

On August 8th, the Ke Ala Hele Makālae trail in Kapaʻa was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Rails to Trails Conservancy.

The Rails to Trails Conservancy is the nation’s largest trail organization that works with local officials to build trails, connect public spaces, and promote outdoor recreation.

The Ke Ala Hele Makālae trail is one that many visitors to Kauaʻi have probably seen—or even been on—without really thinking about it.

The paved coastal path runs 8 miles from Lydgate Beach Park to Kuna Bay along the island’s east coast, connecting several small towns and beach parks.

Ke Ala Hele Makālae translates as “The Path that Goes by the Coast.” Names in Hawaiʻi are typically very literal and descriptive, a practice that goes back to ancient times.

“This stunning trail was nominated for its scenic value, community connections and accessibility—creating new opportunities for people of all abilities to access nature and to walk or bike in the community where they live, supporting the region’s public health, mobility and quality of life goals,” the release said.

New Password Hacking Warning For Gmail, Facebook And Amazon Users

Today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for wednesday, august 28th, microsoft update leak—good news revealed for 30% of windows users.

The trail is being “celebrated for the social, economic and quality-of-life value” it brings to the local community, not only offering a place for physical exercise, scenic beauty, and social interaction, but one of transportation and education.

One can use the path to travel between towns, and interpretive signs explain local history and nature. It’s not exactly a hiking trail, though many people enjoy it on foot by walking or running sections of it for exercise or simply a scenic outing.

Visitors to the island should consider checking out the trail, or even spending the day on it. The most efficient way to enjoy it is to rent a bike from your hotel or local bike shop and ride sections of it between towns or beaches.

Some hotels in the Kapaʻa area are conveniently located along the trail, making it easy to step out and enjoy a morning or evening walk.

The Hilton Garden Inn, for example, the Sheraton Kauaʻi Coconut Beach Resort, and the Aston Islander are all nearby the trail, among other lodging options.

In the future, the plan is to expand the trail to 17 miles—more than double its current length—to stretch between Nāwiliwili and Anahola. As of this writing, there are no firm dates for the construction or completion of the extension.

You can find a map and a deeper explanation of the Ke Ala Hele Makālae trail here .

Sea-Tac airport computer outage is ongoing. Here’s what travelers should know

A cyberattack hit systems at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport over the weekend, causing headaches for airline staff and long lines for travelers.

As of Tuesday – just days ahead of one of the busiest travel weekends of the year – airport systems were still down with no clear timeline as to when outages would be resolved.

Airport officials aren’t sharing much about what happened as the incident is still under investigation, but spokesperson Perry Cooper said Monday the outage occurred after “nefarious characters” were seen on the airport’s computer system early Saturday, prompting officials to turn off the entire system.

Cooper said the airport is working with federal agencies to investigate the cause of the incident and would not comment on possible motives behind a cyberattack.

This has resulted in the movement of luggage through the airport getting badly snarled and long lines at some ticket counters, among other issues. Here’s what travelers should expect if they are flying through Sea-Tac in the next few days.

What systems are affected?

As of Tuesday, the airport’s website and app, ticketing computers for smaller and international airlines, and baggage sorting are all still experiencing outages.

Wi-Fi and phone systems inside the airport, departure and arrival boards, and the airport’s lost-and-found tracking system are also down.

Computers at “common use” check-in counters, or ticketing desks that are shared by multiple airlines, are off. Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country and all international airlines are among those especially affected because they do not have their own dedicated system within the airport, Cooper said.

The airport’s largest airlines, like Delta or Alaska, have not been affected because they have their own computer system, he said.

Those airlines with computer outages have begun handwriting boarding passes and bag tags for passengers who check in in person.

Because computers that operate the airport’s baggage check are down, airport and airline staff have had to manually sort bags to their proper gate and bag claims. This had led to some delays in both departing flights and bags arriving at their destination, Cooper said.

In a post on Tuesday,  the airport said it was making progress in restoring elements of its baggage system and that staff is using “a variety of methods to ensure bags reach their aircraft.”

Are there long security lines?

No, lines through security checkpoints have remained at normal levels.

The Transportation Security Administration’s systems at airports across the country are on their own secure system, which has not been affected by this outage, said Greg Hawko, TSA’s federal security director in Washington.

He encouraged everyone traveling, especially those who may choose to carry on a bag instead of checking it, to remember  TSA’s rules for what to pack .

What can travelers do to have a smooth experience?

Mostly, travelers can expect long lines at ticket counters and possible delays in flights as staff work to ensure everyone and their bags make it onto their planes.

Lines through security checkpoints have remained smooth, Cooper said, and most of the wait is concentrated at the check-in area.

He encouraged travelers to avoid visiting a ticket counter, if possible. That means downloading a mobile boarding pass through an airline app or printing a physical ticket at home and leaving their checked bags at home.

“If you can travel without bags, just carry ons, please do so at this point,” he said.

If a traveler does need to visit a ticket counter, they should plan for extra time. Those traveling on affected airlines should arrive at least three hours early, Cooper said. Those who are traveling internationally and are planning to check a bag should give themselves as much time as possible, he added.

What about cruise ships?

The Port of Seattle’s maritime phone systems and website are out, but cruise ship operations are continuing as normal, Cooper said.

Where to find more information

While airport systems remain out, those looking for updated flight and gate information should check individual airline mobile apps or websites.

The airport is also posting updates on the  Washington Ports website  and  its YouTube channel  periodically.
