We already visited Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan under the scorching sun of the summer season. My wards were quite aware of our next destination – Nainital – one of the most beautiful hill stations of India where weather was fine and climate was “ Thanda – Thanda , Cool – Cool. ” We were so excited that we wanted to fly over there within a few minutes, we didn’t have patience to wait and stare. Secondly we were extremely tired of exertion that we had had during the period of our visit to Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan – so warm, so tiring !

We reached Mathura Cant Station at 9 PM. We were very fortunate that it was drizzling unexpectedly – “Bin Mousam Barsat .” We had no umbrella with us. We came under the shed. We got the reservation in the first class bogie in the superfast passenger train – Agra to Kathgodam.

The train arrived in time and we got into the compartment. We arranged all our luggage and occupied our seats. The TTE came and sat beside us. We introduced ourselves. He was very pleased to see us on tour to Nainital. He said he hailed from Bihar but settled there. He gave us some important tips while visiting Nainital. He advised to get down at Haldwani in stead of Kathgodam as it would be cheaper. I still remember his name, he is Mr. Rambalak Singh Yadav. So gentle , so sober – a gentle man of helping attitude… ? He guided in a nice way, we could have been cautious and could have saved money by following his guidance.

Early in the morning we got down at Haldwani Station and from there we came to Nainital by Maruti Van. We stayed in a hotel just up the main road. The rent was a little bit higher. We thought of changing after one day stay. But Bablu said, “ Papa! We will stay here, wouldn’t go anywhere. The other boys suported him. I introduced the owner of the hotel that I was a member of lions club of Gobindpur, Dhanbad, District 322A. He said he was also a member of lions club of Nainital.

How many days will you stay? Only two days. Stay at least for five days. Your hotel charge we cannot afford for five days. Just pay me fifty par cent, fifty par cent discount for you. Any problem, tell me.

He asked the manager to guide us and arrange taxies on reasonable fare wherever we wanted to go. It was a great relief for us. My wards were very happy and desired to stay for a week then.

Nainital is considered as one of the most beautiful hill stations of India. It is situated in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, head quarter of the district, the summer capital of the Governer at 8580 ft. above the sea level. It was founded and constructed in 1841 during the British regime. AS such tourism is the most significant segment of the Nainital economy. During Summer Vacation parents with their families preferred to visit this place and enjoy with their children. Some foreigners liked to visit in winter seasons to enjoy snow falls.

Where and how we visited and enjoyed the worth seeing places in Nainital is depicted here under: 1: Nainital Lake- The climate was very cool. We had warm clothes with us. After taking lunch we came out of the room and decided to enjoy boating in the Nainital Lake. It was just in front of our eyes. It is also known as Naini Lake situated in the heart of the city. We enjoyed the beautiful and scenic views of the surroundings all around the lake. The northern end is connected with that of the southern end with a bridge. As the weather was very cool and the sunrays were soothing, we spent a few ours in the boat going all around of it. My youngest son was so adamant that he didn’t want to boat with anyone but with his mother only.

2: Naini Devi Temple: It was situated just on the northern shore of the Nainital Lake. Next day on 30th may we were ready by 8 in the morning and went direct to do darshan and pujan of Goddess Naini. We offered Prasad with beautiful red flowers only and prayed for peace, happiness and prosperity in life. Nainital is believed to be one of the 64 Shaktipeeths of India where one of the body parts of Goddess Sati fell down when Lord Shiva carried her body on his shoulders. In Nanital the eyes (Naina) of Sati are believed to have fallen here in Nainital and since then the temple is known as Naini Devi Temple. Naini Devi are the deities of Mata Kali and Lord Ganesha.

3: Sat Tal, Tin Tal and Bhil Tal: The manager of the hotel said us that it would take whole day to visit Sat Tal, Tin Tal and Bhim Tal as these were far away from there down in the tarai areas. An ambassador car was hired for the whole day. We left early in the morning at about eight after bath and breakfast. The road was pucca but zigzag, every five and ten minutes there were turning points written so many warning slogans. We reached Sat Tal. We got down at the shore. We found a series of very beautiful lakes one after another. All around the lakes we stared at the greenery covered with the green plants and trees of different kinds and sizes in length. We touched the water of the Tal and it was as cold as ice. So clean that we cannot describe in words. The cold wave was blowing and the children were shivering . Some tea stalls were at the shore. Some people were selling breakfast and serving lunch.

Simla Mirch, tomatoes and cauliflowers were produced here in the Tarai Areas and the farmers earn money from sale proceeds. We were feeling hungry. We ordered for fried rice, dal fried and gobi – aloo, matar panir sabji and salad. “Very tasteful dishes” – my eldest son said. Really meal was warm readily prepared and served nicely. In the way to return we stopped for a few minutes. Our legs were jammed in sitting in the seats for a long time.

I had with me some toffees and balloons to distribute among the village children. We went to nearby houses. We were happy to meet the people and loved their children – so innocent and simple like lambs, gave them the toffees and balloons. My wife and my daughter went inside the house and talked to the ladies. They served us very tasteful tea. Our children mixed with their children and talked and played with them. We enjoyed their association. We were given a packet of green vegetables by them. I asked the driver to make a round with the children. The driver was very obedient as we treated him as our family members wherever we went and whatever we ate and drank. We came back at about 6 PM. Here in Nainital the Sun rises very late and sets very late. The reason is best known to everybody. I thanked the driver for his good drive and good behavior. I patted his shoulder and paid him Rs.200 extra for sweets for his children. As we were very tired, we didn’t go anywhere but the children went out for shopping in the nearby open market. By that time the owner of the hotel came. I met him in person and thanked him for his co-operation in guiding us. I said to him, “ We will stay further for two/three days only. We may leave on 3rd. June. Why so soon? Stay at least for a week, any problem? No. We are very comfortable and the children are happier than us in living in your hotel so near to everywhere, so beautiful scene and scenery all around us.

4: Ropeway: My wards had noticed the ropeway going and coming up and down – ascending and descending. I also felt its charming scene from a distant place. Early in the morning when bed tea was being served by the waiter, I gave them the packet of green vegetables and asked to prepare Aloo-Parotha and Aloo-Gobi, and Tomatto Chatni by 9 AM. We had planned to enjoy travelling by the Ropeway. We took our lunch as scheduled in time and came out of the hotel at 9.30 sharp. We reached Millital from where aerial ropeway starts. We bought tickets from the ticket counter and sat for our turn.

Nainital is very popular for its nice ropeway. Ropeway is the main attraction of the tourists and pilgrims. There are only two trolleys and their carrying capacity is 11 passengers each at a time. Travel time is from 10AM to 4PM. The thrilling matter is its steep ascending and descending while going up and coming down. We enjoyed the panoramic views of the Naini Lake from the above and also a bird’s eye view of the flats/houses/buildings while descending. It took about ten minutes in going up and coming back down to the starting station. The boys and the girl sat still for a few minutes in watching the Ropeway going up with the passengers and coming back down. Really it was an amazing experience in watching it from a distant place going up and coming down – so quickly – so fast.

5: Hanuman Gadhi – Shri Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir: As usual we got up early in the morning and didn’t wait for tea as we asked the waiter not to serve bed tea. We were ready after bath and hired a taxi for hanuman Gadhi. We had to walk on foot also. As soon as we reached, we noticed a few devotees in front of Sri Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir. This place is situated at a higher level than that of Nainital city. We stood in queue with Prasad and yellow flowers in hands. We did darshan and Pujan of Hanuman Ji and prayed for peace, happiness and prosperity in family. We came out of the temple and rested on the chaubtara built around a tree. We were surprised to see different sizes and types of bells hanging with the branches of a tree near the temple. The pilgrims and tourist come to this place and pray for fulfilling their desire and when it is fulfilled they tie up bells to the branches of the tree. It is a tradition and the people believe in so. The children went up the hill, we also (Wife and husband) followed them. The clouds were flying from one side to another touching our bodies. We touched the clouds with our hands and experienced a unique type of thrills. The weather was cold. All of us were wearing warm clothes. The Sunrays were very soothing to our body and mind. The children had a bunch of balloons in their hands and holding very tightly so that they couldn’t be swept away from their holds.

My youngest son couldn’t hold them fast and as such they were swept away far – far away in the valleys. He was crying, for he lost the bunch of balloons. I took him in my lap and handed over to his mother. We returned in the evening at four.

6. Top Peak of Nainital: It was very steep ascend and descend route to one of the top peak of Nainital. We had never seen such a steep road with big boulders everywhere. We talked to the horseman about our journey on horse backs. They assured our safe riding on the horse backs under their supervision and guidance. We also noticed some tourists on horse backs. Our courage was multiplied to see them. The road was not pucca, somewhere quite muddy. The horses were stepping up very carefully with minimum speed. Slowly and slowly we reached the destination. First of all we came near a safe place. We looked at below the beauty of the tri-mountains in a cylindrical state. At the bottom the narrowest area and at the top the widest ones. The most exciting thing we came to know that the voice or sound we made as loudly as we could do towards the valleys, it was echoing in the same manner after a few seconds. I called loudly Rama, it returned echoing Rama in the same fashion. The children enjoyed it calling their names again and again. My sons and daughter reached the top of the hill by crawling on hands and feet slowly and slowly. Very calm and quit site we have found here.All the hills were covered with green plants and trees. We had never seen such a wonderful place anywhere in life. We stayed there for a few hours on the lap of nature and came back by horse backs. We were relieved of tension as soon as we got down from the backs of the horses. We thanked the horsemen for their careful and safe guide. I paid their wages with respect. We came back to hotel. We were so tired that we didn’t come out. We took tea and biscuits and lied flat on the beds for rest. Our next destination was Dehradun. We reserved an ambassador car from “Nainital To Dehradun” and paid advance to the driver. He said to us to be ready by 6 in the morning next day.

My Summer Trip to Nainital

We had been talking about going to Nainital for a very long time. A three day holiday just seemed the best time to do it. So we sorta decided on the spot. The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigams Office in Lucknow (Just behind Hutch house on Shah Najaf Road) was helpful and made the necessary bookings at their tourist rest house at Sukhatal in Nainital (two nights) and Corbett International Resort at Corbett (Three nights).This is a pvt. hotel for which KMVN makes bookings – Public-Private partnership as the PRO at KMVN called it – Damn costly though. In this story I am writing about Nainital. I would share my Corbett tale along with pics in a subsequent post, hopefully very soon. We did see ‘the thing’ in Corbett so stay tuned.

Some pics from my trip.

Outside of Nainital are the Bhim Tal and Sat Tal lakes which mean a ride by taxi. We did not attempt this and so cannot comment. Someone else may like to add.

For the other lakes around nanital, taxis can be hired. As you eat breakfast on mall road guides and horse touts identify tourists instantly and solicit customers. I don’t know about the taxis as I didnt hire any. However the horse touts show you albums with all the spots. Then they show you an official looking chart which quotes Rs. 400/- for a standard ride. But considering the fact that it is offseason he will tell you that he will settle for Rs. 300/- per horse. Do haggle at this juncture cos as the day progresses the prices come down drastically as I found out to my cost. They reach about Rs. 125/- per horse by 3-4 pm. However, having said this I would like to add that it is hard work for these fellows – they practically run along with the horse and it is such a steep climb and coupled with the cold it must be pretty difficult. I for one did not mind paying what they asked at the end of the ride along with a tip to boot. On top of Dorothy’s seat are two cameramen who offer to take wonderful photographs at Rs. 25/- a piece and have them delivered to your hotel by evening. Beware, they are lousy photographers. My digital camera took much sharper photos than the ones he gave me so generally avoid them unless you have battery problem in your cam or your mem stick is full at an inopportune moment. If you have your own car, entry to the mall is charged at Rs. 50/- while there are toll gates on the way to lovers / suicide point and on the way to Raj Bhavan (Rs. 25/-). Beware of Uttaranchal taxi drivers – they usually think they are the best hill drivers and disdain other drivers especially with other registration plates. Parking at the lake is charged at Rs. 50/- for 24 hrs. They even have a check out time of 12 pm at the parking lot.

I have been to Nainital few times, but I could never been to all these points. Mostly due to my lack of initiation (and everyone else around me). After reading this, it seems there is much more to see at Nainital then just the Mall.

Ram we did try to go to Raj Bhavan. Unfortunately on the first day we reached during lunch time. The second day was a public holiday and the bhawan is closed. so we sorta gave up after that.

First of all welcome abroad, your tips on Naini are very useful. I too stayed in Sukhataal KMVN guest house, its a good place and we enjoyed the cave garden too.

About horses I have a differing opinion: I and later on my Brother-in-law fell down from the horses during the steep climb. I would say its not safe, esp with kids. Generally a single person manages two horses and sitting on saddle is more painful than trekking to the top (even with the kids, one can stop at a point where kids are tired). I think the horse rides are good on planes, for example around Naini lake, but not to the China peak or to the snow view peak. Its with the motto that a travel should be without any injury to anyone.

Next time when you go do enjoy beautiful Saattal and Naukuchiyatal.

Another thing – it was painful until we sorta learned how to balance ourselves but the thighs still ache for some time. Anyway will try to visit Saattal and naukuchiyatal next time. Thanks

Manish, 6 years ago u wrote a comment on how dangerous horse riding was. 2 years ago on a trip to manali the horse i was riding broke a leg while climbing down a steep slope and fell on top of me. Luckily it fell on my legs which saved my back. It was tied to the horse behind me which was carrying my wife and two year old son. That horse fell too. Luckily we were clad in that fur which they force on you will driving to Rohtang and so no scratches. The baby did not even wake. But still it probably underlines the dangers of horse riding expecailly up steep slopes. I now prefer walking anyday. Patrick

Where is Nainital Located?

Nainital is located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state in north India. This immensely popular hill station sits in a valley at the foothills of the outer Himalayas. At the heart of the Nainital is the mango-shaped, jewel-bright Naini Lake which boasts a circumference of nearly 3 kilometers!

Situated at a height of nearly 7000 feet above sea level, Nainital is surrounded by steep mountains on all sides of which Naina, Deopatha, and Ayarpatha are the highest. Around Nainital, there is an incredible number of viewpoints that offer gorgeous panoramic vistas of the snowy ranges, tangled ridges, and vast plains stretching as far as the eye can see.

Why Visit Nainital

If you were thinking about visiting Nainital but not able to decide whether you should or not, then mentioned below are a few points that can help decide. To keep it brief, you should visit Nainital if:

How to reach Nainital

Nainital is a very well connected town and getting there will not be a problem at all. Depending on your own preference, you can either chose to drive by your own vehicle or use public transport to get here.

However, due to its location in the hills, there will definitely be some amount of road journey involved so if you were coming by flight or train, you will have to find the nearest airport or train station that is of convenience to you. More details on this are provided further in the article.

How to reach Nainital by Car / Motorcycle

There are two most common routes that you can take to travel from Delhi to Nainital. Up to Moradabad, it is actually the same road but after Moradabad, you can either take the road via Rampur and Haldwani; or you can travel via Kaladhungi. I will explain both.

Delhi to Nainital via Rampur

Delhi – Ghaziabad – Hapur – Garh Mukteshwar – Gajraula – Moradabad – Rampur – Haldwani – Kathgodam – Nainital

This route is more commercial and hence also the more crowded one. Until Moradabad, the journey is a smooth one but then it turns into a problematic one the moment you cross Moradabad and remains so until Nainital.

You will have to cross the busy market of Bilaspur and Rampur to get to Haldwani, which is even more crowded. You will have to encounter all kinds of traffic here including light to heavy vehicles as well as bullock carts. The condition of this road is kind of a little bad and I will advise you to not take this one.

Delhi to Nainital via Kaladhungi

Delhi – Ghaziabad – Hapur – Garmukteshwar – Gajraula – Moradabad – Tanda – Bazpur – Kaladungi – Nainital

As compared to the one via Haldwani, this route is much more scenic and a lot better. Heavy vehicles are not allowed on this road so there won’t be any buses or trucks to bother you. The condition of the road is absolutely amazing and the total distance is only 265 kilometers. By this road, you can easily make it to Nainital from Delhi in about 6 – 7 hours.

Nainital Road Condition

Road conditions in Nainital and while getting there will be a mix of good, average and bad but it will mostly be good all the way. If you are driving by yourself, make sure you are confident about tackling the mountain roads, which are steep and full of hairpin bends.

Best Vehicle for Nainital

There is no best vehicle as such needed for the Nainital trip. Though the place is at some height, I have seen the locals here drive around in a Maruti Alto as well.

So as long as your car or motorcycle is well maintained, you will be able to visit Nainital irrespective of its engine size. Especially for motorcycles though, if yours was a 100CC or 125CC one, it would be better to plan the trip solo and travel as light as possible.

How to reach Nainital by Bus

There is a regular Bus service to Nainital from almost every major city nearby. These buses are operated by the local state transport as well as private operators.

You can get to Nainital by either UP Roadways, Uttarakhand Roadways , or other state-run buses depending on where you were coming from. Many private bus operators offer daily travel options from New Delhi as well as other cities and towns. You can choose from non AC, AC, Volvo, or sleeper buses.

In terms of booking a Bus seat, If you were coming by private Bus, you would have to work directly with the tour operator. For Uttarakhand state-run buses, you can do the booking at their official government’s website .

How to reach Nainital from Delhi

There are daily bus services from Delhi to Nainital. The buses leave from ISBT Anand Vihar Delhi and are run by Uttarakhand Roadways.

Bus Fare to Nainital

This will entirely depend on the type of Bus and whether it was a state-run or by a private tour operator. But on average, a Delux Bus to Nainital will cost you about Rs. 600 from places like Delhi and Dehradun. An ordinary Bus ticket will cost close to Rs. 300-400.

Buses from Nainital

For your return journey, most Buses leave Nainital from Tallital bus stand. If you weren’t able to find a Bus to your hometown directly from Nainital, you will have to first get to either Haldwani and Bhowali. Haldwani is a major Bus as well as Train Terminus and there are regular Buses from here to almost every major city nearby.

• Nainital to Delhi Bus: Departures at 9 am, 9.30 am, 7.30 pm 8.30 pm, 9 pm. Fare Rs. 600 for AC Bus and Rs. 390 for non AC
• Nainital to Haridwar Bus: Daily departure at 6.30 pm. The fare is Rs. 355 and it is an ordinary Bus.
• Nainital to Dehradun Bus: Departures at 5.30 am, 7.30 am, 6 pm, 8 pm. Fare is Rs. 425 per person.
• Nainital to Almora Bus: Departures at 7 am and 10 am. Fare per person is Rs.100
• Nainital to Haldwani Bus: A Bus at every half an hour from 5.30 am to 9 pm. Fare is Rs. 65 per person.

How to reach Nainital by Taxi

You can also book a private taxi to drop you at Nainital but it may turn out to be a costly affair. From Delhi or a city at the same distance, a private taxi to Nainital will cost about Rs. 4000 for a drop and Rs. 6000 for a return journey. If you opted for an SUV like Innova, this rent will be around Rs. 6000 for a drop and Rs. 9000 for a return journey.

How to reach Nainital by Train

The nearest railway station to Nainital is at Kathgodam, located about 35 kilometers away. It has robust connectivity to major Indian cities such as New Delhi, Kolkata, and Lucknow.

There are many daily trains to nearby states. Some of the frequent trains are Ranikhet Express, Bagh Express, Kranti Express, and Uttar Sampark Express. The best train by far is the New Delhi Kathgodam Shatabdi Express which operates daily. Travel time on this train is approximately 5.5 hours one way. From Kathgodam, you can book a private taxi or share a cab to reach Nainital.

How to reach Nainital from Kathgodam

From Kathgodam, private taxis charge about Rs 650-900 for a drop to Nainital. The price will be different between the types of car you chose. If you wanted to opt for a more budget option, you can also board shared taxis which would cost 150-300 per person.

Most hotels can also arrange a pick up for you from the train station if you were staying with them. The cost will be the same as I mentioned above, Rs 600-900 for a drop.

The most cost-effective method would be to walk to the bus stand which is about 1.5 kilometers away from the railway station and take a bus to Nainital which will only cost Rs. 60-65 per person.

How to reach Nainital by Flight

The nearest airport to Nainital is Pantnagar Airport, located about 65 kilometers and 2 hours away. It is served by Air India and is one of the least busy airports in the country, handling only 6-7 scheduled flights a week.

There are also private chartered flights to Pantnagar and it also provides helicopter landing pads. Direct flights to Pantnagar are available only from New Delhi and a private taxi from Pantnagar to Nainital will cost Rs. 4000-4500 in peak season.

Local Transport in Nainital

Once you have reached Nainital, below is how you can move around locally in the town and to nearby areas for sightseeing.

Private taxis

These typically charge Rs. 1000 per person for the Kathgodam-Nainital journey and Rs. 2000 for the Pantnagar-Nainital journey. A share taxi would reduce the cost to Rs. 300-600 per person.

Taxi rides within town cost Rs. 50 to Rs. 250.

Self-driving

Drive into Nainital from New Delhi via Ghaziabad and Hapur. Continue on NH 24 till you pass Moradabad and then transfer to NH 121. You will reach Nainital after passing through Kashipur, Tanda, Nandpur, Ramnagar, and Kalidhungi.  Try to begin your drive as early in the morning as possible to avoid getting stuck in traffic on the national highways.

Cycle Rickshaw

Some flat stretches in Nainital such as on the route between Malli Tal and Talli Tal offer cycle rickshaws. These are very popular with tourists these days. A prepaid cycle rickshaw will cost you about Rs. 10 per kilometer, which is dirt cheap. However, avoid these if possible.

They are time-consuming and impossible to navigate through thick crowds. Also, certain areas of Nainital such as the Mall Road are closed entirely to vehicles. It is also pretty costly.

Cycle-rickshaws charge Rs. 30 along the Mall.

Rented Motorcycles

Another way to move around in Nainital would be to rent a motorcycle or an automatic bike like Activa. You can rent one from either Nainital itself or from Kathgodam or Haldwani (near bus stop and railway station)

Private Car

For a full day of sightseeing, it is wise to book a private car. The cost will be approximately Rs. 1800. At the day end, they will drop you where you wish.

Horse Riding

While prohibited inside the town proper, you can hire a horse to scale the surrounding hills. Bara Pathar is the best place to hire a horse.

Nowadays, Naini Lake resembles the Dal Lake in Srinagar due to the sheer number of crafts sailing on its waters. On any given day, you can choose to hire paddle boats, rowing boats, or even a yacht.

Since the Naini Lake has a circumference of more than 3 kilometers, you can moor your boat at some far-off jetty and have a picnic on the Lakeshore, far away from the tourist crowd!

Nainital is best explored on foot. Take your time and enjoy the picturesque beauty of this hill station on long walks.

Things to Pack for Nainital Trip

Now let us take a look at how your packing should look like for visiting Nainital.

Clothes to Pack for Nainital

Carry warm clothes no matter what time of year you are traveling. Also, dress in layers so that you can put on or take off a layer when the temperature changes suddenly. In winter especially, thermal wear and heavy jackets are a must.

Carry extra pairs of clean socks at all times. All mountain areas can experience sudden or continuous downpours at all times of the year, so carry an umbrella, poncho , or windcheater. Nainital is best explored on foot, so sturdy, all-terrain, all-weather shoes are a basic requirement.

Remember, respect the sentiments of the local tribal people and do not wear clothes that are revealing, especially when visiting a holy place such as a Monastery.

Carry at least 10 copies of your Identification proof and Address proofs along with the original documentation. Passport and Aadhar Card are the accepted ones. Also, carry several passport size photographs. It is also advised to carry a list of emergency contact numbers on your person at all times.

Hygiene and personal care

A basic first aid kit should be carried on a priority basis which includes not just bandages and gauze but also medication for fever, diarrhea, indigestion, cold, etc. If you take prescription drugs, carry the adequate dosage of the same to cover the duration of your trip.

ATMs are few and far between outside Nainital, and the ones which exist may not have adequate cash at all times. So, it is wise to carry a decent sum of cash. Don’t rely on payment through card as most hotels and nearly all shopkeepers only accept cash. Distribute cash through all your belongings for safety.

This will ensure that you are able to cover all of the must-visit places without rushing through in any part of your journey.

Below is a sample itinerary for the Nainital trip. For the sake of explaining the route and travel plan, I will assume Delhi as your starting point. However, even if you were coming from a different city, only the journey on the first and last day will be different. The rest of the details will still apply.

• Day 1: Depart from New Delhi to Nainital, preferably very early in the morning. If you are driving, you can have lunch at the various roadside dhabas. Reach Nainital in 6-7 hours and check in to the hotel. Relax for a bit. In the evening, explore Mall Road.
• Day 2: Sightseeing around Nainital – begin at the Naina Devi Temple and explore the lake and boating. Next, visit the zoo. For lunch, head up to Tiffin Top for a picnic. In the evening, take the ropeway to Snow point for the sunset.
• Day 3: Excursion to Bhim Tal and Sat Tal. Alternatively, you can also visit and camp overnight at the Jim Corbett National Park.
• Day 4: Shopping at the Bhutia Market, Tibetan Market, and Bara Bazaar
• Day 5: Breakfast followed by departure to New Delhi

Is Nainital Safe to Visit?

It is very safe to be in Nainital throughout the year. However, visitors are advised to stay cautious during monsoon season. The only thing visitors have to consider is to stay indoors as it may rain continuously during the rainy season.

The standard rules of safety like being alert with strangers and not hanging out in strange places will apply to everyone. If you are traveling alone then it is advisable to stay in a hotel in Nainital itself and not in a remote area.

Can you travel to Nainital with your family?

Nainital is a child-friendly place and there are plenty of attractions to keep the young ones occupied and happy. Traffic Rules

The entry of heavy vehicles is not allowed during the months of May, June, and October from 8 AM to 10.30 AM; and 2.30 PM to 10.30 PM, light vehicles from 6.00 PM to 10.00 PM and cycle rickshaw from 6.00 PM to 9.00 PM. There is no parking allowed on the Mall road except for designated parking places as mentioned below.

• Parking at Sukhatal, Opposite Petrol Pump Mallital.

Movement of vehicles is not allowed on Mall Road between 6 – 9 p.m during tourist season. Tallital to Mallital is converted into a one-way route for LMV from 6 to 9 pm. During Off-Season the Mall Road is closed between 6 – 8 p.m

At a distance of 2 km from Tallital Bus Stand, The Naina Devi Temple is situated on northern end of the Nainital Lake near the Nainital Boat House Club in Nainital. The presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Naina Devi represented by two eyes. According to the legend, Naina Devi Temple is the place where eyes from burned body of Goddess Sati fall when her corpse was being carried by Lord Shiva. The word Naina is synonymous with Sati's eyes. The temple is one the main places to visit in Nainital . It is said that the current temple at Nainital actually replaces the original 15th century temple. In 1842, a devotee Moti Ram Shah installed an idol of Naina Devi. A major landside has destroyed the temple completely in 1880. Naina Devi temple was replaced by the present structure in 1883. Inside the temple, devotees have darshan of three deities. 2 Nainital Lake / Naini Lake

At a distance of 1.5 km from Tallital Bus Stand, Nainital Lake is a natural freshwater lake, situated amidst the main town of Nainital . Nainital Lake is one of the prime places to visit in Nainital town. The lake is most commonly represented to promote Nainital Tourism. According to the history, this lake was built in 1839 by P. Barron at an altitude of 2,000 m. This is one of the four lakes of Kumaon hills, the other three lakes are Sattal Lake, Bhimtal Lake and Naukuchiyatal Lake. Nainital Lake is lunar-shaped and has an outlet at the southeastern end. The lake covers a perimeter of 2 miles with a depth varies from 6 m to 28 m. Northern part of the lake is called as Mallital while southern part known as Tallital. Balia Nala is the main feeder-stream of the lake. 3 Snow View Point

At a distance of 3 km from Tallital Bus Stand & 2 km from Nainital Lake, Snow View Point is one of the most beautiful places in Nainital and also among the most visited Nainital tourist places . Situated at an altitude of 2,270 m, Snow view point offers excellent views of snowcapped mountains like Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Kot. It also offers great views of Nainital Lake and the town. Snow view point is well connected by road but a ride in aerial ropeway from Mallital is the best way to reach this place. 4 High Altitude Zoo

At a distance of 1.5 km from Tallital Bus Stand, G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo is a high altitude zoo situated in Nainital. It is one of the popular Nainital tourist places and is one of the three High Altitude Zoo Parks in North India, apart from those in Darjeeling and Sikkim. The Zoo was established in 1984 and is spread over an area of 11 acres. It is situated on the Sher Ka Danda hill at an altitude of 2,100 m (6,900 feet) and is the only zoo in Uttarakhand. The Zoo was opened to visitors on 1st June 1995 and is managed by Bharat Ratna Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo Management Society, Nainital from 1st March 2002. The Mall Road was constructed during the British colonial rule. This is the main commercial area which runs through the heart of the Nainital town. Hi. I will visiting Nainital.in June with my family and will stay in Nainital itself. We plan to do a day trip (maximum 2 hours one side travel). Kindly suggest whether we should go in for Bhimtal and Naukuchital or Jim Corbett. Or some other nearby destination can also be suggested.

It's best to avoid Jim Corbett for a day trip as the main attraction is the safari, which requires more time. Instead, visit Mukteshwar or Sattal, Bhimtal, and Naukuchiatal.

Nainital is a beautiful hill station in Himalayas. My father is very fond of Nainital. This year we went just after Deepawali to Nainital on a short trip. There is no direct suitable connection by train to Nainital from Allahabad so we first went to Rampur and then from there we took a train to Kathgodam.

From Kathgodam we took a taxi and by road went to Nainital. It was a call for BANDH (a strike) in Uttarakhand, the new state people wanted to be carved out of Uttar Pradesh, so there were very few people on the roads and shops were closed.

We were stopped a kilometre short of Nainital by roadblocks and we had to cover this last kilometre of our journey on foot. When we reached our rest house, we saw monkeys were playing opposite our suite. There is a lake named Naini here. There were pedal boats and rowboats in it. Pedal boats were in three shapes – Duck-shaped, Fish-shaped and standard ones.

There are temples also at Nainital. Naina Devi temple is near the ‘Flats’ the large flat ground which is carved out of the lake itself due to landslides in olden times. It is near the Mallital area. Pashan Devi temple is on the ‘Thandi Sadak’ on the other bank of the lake. On this side of the lake lies the Mall road.

Hanumangarhi Temple by Nim-karori Baba is some three kilometres away from Nainital. We enjoyed the walk alongside the lake periphery covering four kilometres in one day. It was very interesting. We visited Hanumangarhi also and walked on return trip from temple. My papa and mom walked both ways while my sister, my grandmother and I took a taxi ride while going.

We had lunch at Shiva restaurant in Mallital. Our trip was a very short one – four days only, since my mom had to attend the marriage of my mama (uncle) at Kanpur.

There were two trollies. I purchased so many beautiful candles from Nainital. My sister and my grandma took Golu Dev and Lord Ganesha’s statue moulded wax. We came down on the fourth day to Kathgodam. The train was ready to go. We boarded the train immediately and next morning we came back to our residence at Allahabad.

March - June : These months constitute the summer season in Nainital and are generally considered pleasant for a day sightseeing and for boating on the lake. This is also the best time to visit Nainital as the weather is favourable. The average temperature varies between 10-25 degrees C. This is also the time when Nainital packages are at their most popular.

July - September : Heavy rain showers are expected during the monsoon months and sometimes the rain can continue throughout the day. Rainfall between July and September can lead to some road blockages; however, it is promptly cleared by the authorities. Being off-season, you can avail good deals on Nainital packages during these months.

October - February : October can also be a good time for a Nainital trip as it is neither too hot nor too cold during the day. However, a certain chill can be felt in the air at night. How to Reach Nainital

By Air: Nainital does not have direct air connectivity. The nearest airport is in Pantnagar which is well-connected to New Delhi and Mumbai via SpiceJet and Air India. From Pantnagar, you can take a cab to Nainital.

By Road: Nainital enjoys excellent road connectivity to and from important cities in North India. Several tour operators operate daily bus services from New Delhi to Nainital. Air conditioned, non-air conditioned, sleeper and Volvo buses ply to and from Nainital. You can also take a taxi to Nainital, or plan a self-drive Nainital trip.

By Train: The nearest railway station from Nainital is located at a distance of 34km in Kathgodam. Kathgodam railway station enjoys good connectivity to and from cities like Delhi, Lucknow, and Howrah. From Kathgodam, taxis and buses are available for Nainital.

• Places to Visit in Nainital

One of the best places to visit in Nainital, the Mall Road was built during the colonial era. It is the centre of all activities in town. It is home to a number of souvenir shops, restaurants, hotels and cafés. Taking a stroll on the Mall Road is one of the best things to do in Nainital. Apart from its regional significance, it was also the shooting location for many Bollywood films like Kati Patang  and  Koi Mil Gaya .

• Naina Devi Temple

Situated along the northern end of the Naini Lake, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Sati. It is counted as one of the 64  Shakti Peeth  devoted to goddess Shakti. This makes it a must visit place in Nainital tour packages. According to legend, the eye of Goddess Sati fell at this spot when her mortal remains were being carried to Mt. Kailash by Lord Shiva. This is how she began to be worshipped as Naina Devi. Also known as Nanda Devi Temple, it is one of the most religiously significant places to visit in Nainital. It is also the venue of the grand Nanda Devi Mahotsav.

Located 4 km from the city centre, Land's End is situated at an altitude of 2118 meters. Appearing like the end point of the valley, this place offers picturesque panoramic views of the valley and surrounding hills. Villages nestled at the bottom of the valley look spectacular from this vantage point. The most stunning vista that you can behold from this spot is that of Khurpatal, which looks like a shimmering gem hidden amidst pine forests. To explore this place during their Nainital trip, tourists have to reach Bara Pathar, from where the cliff lies a kilometre towards the top. The trek to Land's End is an easy one and replete with beautiful views enroute.

Set at an elevation of about 2,290 metres in the Ayarpatta Hills, Tiffin Top is one of the most famous places to visit in Nainital. This picnic spot is fondly known as Dorothy's Seat, in loving memory of the eminent painter Kellet Dorothy. A cobble-stoned walkway leads up to Tiffin Top. Since this can be a tiring trek, those travelling with their families opt for a horseback ride all the way up. The place earns recognition for offering picturesque vistas of the Himalayas and of the entire town. On reaching this high-altitude site, visitors are welcomed by invigorating weather that relaxes them after the upward climb. It is a perfect place for photography enthusiasts as well as for family picnics.

Naini Lake forms the heart and soul of this beautiful hill city. The fact that Nainital is named after the Naini Lake speaks highly of its significance. This beautiful lake is surrounded by seven majestic mountains and is a highlight of Nainital packages. Dedicated to Lord Shiva – the Supreme Hindu deity, this temple enshrines a white marble Shiva Linga with a copper yoni. Since years, this temple has been a significant shrine for Agaries – an iron ore miner community and people from Maheshwar sect. It has also been mentioned as one of the 18 important Shiva temples in Hindu scriptures. The shrine has a simple architecture with a flight of stone stairs that lead devotees to the main shrine. Apart from the sacred Shiva Lingam, it houses idols of various other deities like Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Parvati.

Chauli Ki Jali

Located on a cliff behind the Mukteshwar temple is Chauli ki Jali, translating to “rock hole”. It is a paradise for nature lovers. To have an adrenaline rush, you can try rock climbing here. Get picture perfect views of the Kumaon valley from the edge of this cliff. This place is considered to be a witness to a fierce battle fought between the Goddess and the Demon. The trunk of an elephant, a shield, and outlines of a sword are testaments to the war. Many superstitions have also been associated with this cliff.

Nainital Zoo

It is the only wildlife establishment of its kind in the state of Uttarakhand which makes it significant in Nainital tour packages. Nestled in the Sher ka Danda Hills at an altitude of 2100 metres above sea level, the high-altitude Zoo is covered with beautiful flora, which includes some rare flowering and ornamental plants. Human beings are curious by birth. From the beginning, man has traveled far and wide to satisfy his curiosity and pleasure.

Travel is a pleasant experience in itself. Every journey carries many memories in itself, but some are very memorable. Most people travel during the summer holidays, and the trip to the mountains is enjoyable during this season.

I have visited historical and religious places many times, but during the last summer vacation, I also got a promising opportunity to visit the hill station. One of my father’s friends lives in Nainital.

I had requested my father many times to visit the hill stations. During the summer vacation, he decided to go to Nainital to visit his friend. He first informed his friend by letter. His friend gladly invited him to come to Nainital. Then we made a program to go to Nainital with the family.

Benefits of Travelling

Travelling to different places enhances our experience, allows us to endure hardships, and becomes self-supporting. For a few days, one gets Freedom from the daily work cycle, due to which a wave of joy runs in life. By travelling, we get acquainted with the customs, languages, etc. of different castes and places.

By traveling, mutual love grows in our heart, an opportunity to understand each other’s happiness and sorrow. In the body, there is a sense of vigour and freshness; in the mind, a feeling of working with courage. This type of journey has special significance in human life.

The View of Nainital

The road to Nainital was very steep, and there was a beautiful view of the valleys on either side of the road. Somewhere these valleys were stunning, and somewhere, their depth was intimidating.

The beauty of the trees in the mountains was made on sight. The cool breeze gave immense pleasure to the mind even in the summer. The streets of the city were clean, and the houses were clean.

Nainital got its name from a pool that is also named ‘Lake District’. On one side of this pool is the temple of Naina Devi. The sisters of the temple are stunning mountains that captivate everyone’s mind.

The reason for my trip to be memorable

My first train journey because of this journey, was the view of the platform, theft on the train, and the incident of pocket-cutting, besides enjoying the scenic view and the scenic beauty of the mountains by seeing them up close. Mountains are so big that it is known by looking at them. I will never forget the experience of the mountainous climate and the hard-working life of the people there.

I could not have imagined that the lush green fields would be so attractive and this train journey would be so exciting. Seeing the mountain’s beauty, the mind was overwhelmed. Now the eagerness to undertake another similar journey remains in my mind. The memories of this journey will always fascinate me.

The name of that village was Ranakpur. There was a settlement of about four hundred houses in it. The houses there were tiny and beautiful. A new ‘Panchayat Ghar’ was built in the middle of the village. He had a thick tree trunk.

The school and library were at the south end of the town. There used to be a massive crowd of devotees in the village Ram temple in the evening and early morning. The city was small, but it was beautiful! Apart from this, many such places in the village are beautiful. We travelled a lot for three days. After that, attending my friend’s function, we caught the train to go home the next day.

This visit to the village was enjoyable and memorable for me. The place’s natural beauty mesmerized me, and I captured the scenes on camera. If given a chance, I would like to go on such a pleasant journey again.

However, when I got information from the school about the educational tour to Shimla, my name was added to the list of students who participated in going there.
