  SCHWALBE MARATHON PLUS TOUR TYRES

  I’ve run Schwalbe tyres on various bikes for many years. Each visit to their website reveals further refinements to the range. At one time a set of Marathon Plus tyres for the tourer made selection easy. Now, with the Marathon Mondial, the Marathon Supreme, the GT, GT360 there are fine decisions to be made. Well, the Marathon Plus Tour is a robust choice for mixed surface touring where speed is not of the essence, but durability is. It has offered sound handling on all the surfaces, wet and dry, I’ve taken it over. It may be a compromise, but then there are many people out there who do not specialise in surfaces, just in riding their bikes all over the place.

  Pros: a rugged all-rounder.

  Cons: no 700x32c option.

  Spec 4.25/5

  Fundamentals are these: a wired, directional, twin-skinned tyre. Nothing unusual there. It comes in five sizes; 26x1.75 and 26x2.00; and 37-622, 42-622, 47-622. This fits very nicely with recent trends in trekking and touring bicycles. Just check your clearances, especially if you like to run with mudguards.

  A moderately aggressive tread promises road and off-road potential in roughly equal measures, according to Schwalbe’s publicity. 67 EPI is not the highest possible, but above this durability is sacrificed on the altar of rolling. Even so, you’d expect these to be lively enough for a touring bike. Schwalbe score rolling at 3.5/6.

  ​ The “Endurance” is common in Schwalbe’s touring range. They score it as 7/7 for durability – a definite requirement for mixed-surface touring. 

  

  The same score for puncture protection comes via their “Smart Guard” system. Rather than acting as a single line of defence, this uses defence in depth to expel infiltrators.

  Pressures run from 50-85psi. Our two testers are both over fourteen stone, so testing tended to be toward the top end to preserve them from pinch punctures. More of that later. That range is actually pretty good, and should give something for everyone. Lower pressures may best be reserved for the larger profile versions.

  There’s a reflective “reflex” strip and a track for a bottle dynamo.

  Schwalbe state a weight limit of 105kg. Don’t panic. Remember, you have two tyres. 205kg should manage most touring rigs and riders.

  Fitting 3.75/5

  

  Fingers only onto SON and Jalco rims. Likewise, Mavic and Ryde Sputnik. Schwalbe seem to have ditched the Marathon Plus’s reputation for stubbornness of bygone years. Removal, of course, requires tyre levers, but I’ve not had to resort to anything like the long handle. LifeLine tyre levers out of my touring tool-kit have sufficed. Definitely, no need for the long-handled tyre-wand.

  Puncture Protection 4.25/5

  Well, 350 miles of mixed surface riding has not yet heard the hiss of death. That has included urban cycle paths with the usual detritus left by our glass-smashing-brethren, as well as a long chunk of rocky single-track with technical rocky sections, as well as road and gravel.

  Although the tread is moderately aggressive, it hasn’t picked up flints and shattered glass readily. I managed to find a hawthorn twig – usually enough to sink any tyre and inner tube. This was the exception. A puny hawthorn or a tough tyre – well, this is not an exact science.

  My conclusion? Schwalbe’s Smart Guard is still as good as you get.

  Having said that, if weight is no problem, I may well go for Tannus Armour to allow running at lower pressures. Fortunately, I’ve found the combination performs equally well under a touring load when I’d like to keep pressure higher.

  Durability 3.5/5

  OK, as ever, this report would be a long time in the making if we were to look at getting a couple of thousand miles in. At this early stage, there are no signs of marking on the tyre, despite a teenager’s skid-pulling antics on gravel tracks. In fact, with a little spit and polish they still look as good as new. With the emphasis on durability, and much experience of Schwalbe tyres, I’d expect these to last a long old time on a 

  

  commuter-touring- hack-leisure machine in use for all-purpose riding. In other words, as good as you’ll get for mixed surface tours.

  Handling 3.5/5

  These were not designed for fast-rolling. On the other hand, they’ve gone well-enough mounted on the aluminium frame of an all-purpose Pinnacle. On the heavier, big tour Swallow – hub dynamo on the front wheel – they take on a more stoical persona. Even so, they’ve plenty of life, perhaps a product of the supple side-walls.

  Handling has been really good. True, they don’t cut into the surface as well as the G-One All Round or the GT365, but they’ve taken on some tight turns on forest gravel with confidence as well as feeling reassuring on wet tarmac in city traffic. Sound braking, too – including on those deliberate skids. I’ve found them more than adequately responsive, but faster rough-riders may prefer, suppler, less durable, tubeless set-ups (like the aforementioned G-One All Round).

  As you’d hope, under load, their performance doesn’t diminish – within reason. Trucking long with full camping gear – or heading home after a supermarket run – corners will be taken more cautiously, but that isn’t caused by the tyres.

  With this sort of profile, a comfortable ride should be expected – especially for someone who regularly runs 28s or 32s. As the trend is toward fatter tyres for touring, these hit the mark pretty well.

  The best part of £92 for a pair of tyres is a big investment, but not unreasonable, especially when one considers the reliable miles you’ll get for each penny. In any case, you are likely to find them discounted on-line.

  

  Other tyres in the Marathon range come in within a similar range, although the Marathon Racer is £37.49.. OK, the magic carpet, ultra-durable, multi-surface  Marathon Mondial  are significantly pricier. At just under £60 each, The Marathon Supreme are probably a better bet if your bias is for asphalt. Equally, we found the slightly cheaper Marathon GT365 a good bet, especially for mixed terrain riding in a typical UK winter.

  Other brands of tyre are available, of course. For example, we found the  Vee Tire Co Zilent MK2  worthy choices, not just for commuting and city work, but also for gravel and touring ventures (as opposed to the Zilent originals, which were best without a hefty touring load). The Marathon Plus Tour probably edge it on handling and rougher surfaces, in my opinion.

  Goodyear County Premium   tyres are a bit pricier, but may be preferred by some lighter-weight tourers looking for a bit more speed on a mixture of surfaces.

  

  More than workhorses, though very good for the daily commute or shopping trip, the Marathon Plus Tour do well on mixed surfaces when underload or travelling light. Strong puncture protection is not unusual these days, and compromise is perhaps key to the good all-round touring tyre. Road-biased tourers may prefer, Conti Top Contacts or the good old Schwalbe Marathon Plus or the Marathon Supreme. More extreme terrain may require knobblier rubber, but I can’t think of a mixed-terrain tour that I have ever done that these would not have handled with aplomb.

  Verdict 4/5 Taking its place in the subtly differentiated Schwalbe touring range, this is a lively, reliable all-rounder.

  JO de Paris 2024 : plusieurs marathoniens amateurs mettent en vente leur médaille du "Marathon pour tous" à plus de 300 euros sur une plateforme de revente

  

  Plusieurs sportifs amateurs ont décidé de revendre sur une plateforme leur médaille du "Marathon pour tous" ou du "10 km pour tous" de Paris 2024 pour des sommes allant de 186 à 420 euros, a constaté franceinfo sur Vinted.

  Un peu moins de 10 de ces médailles, ruban orangé, métal couleur bronze, sont actuellement en vente. Près de 20 000 coureurs ont pu prendre le départ de ce "Marathon pour tous", une course organisée en parallèle des JO, sur le même parcours, et dont l'inscription était gratuite, sur tirage au sort.

  Sur la plateforme Vinted, d'autres utilisateurs tentent de faire des affaires avec les JO. On peut par exemple y trouver des tenues de bénévoles, de marque Decathlon : un t-shirt à 100 euros, une banane au même prix, ou encore une tenue complète (chaussures, chaussettes, bob, t-shirt, jogging) mise à prix à plus de 3 000 euros.

  Particulièrement remarqué pendant l'olympiade, le bob des volontaires, de couleur rose, avec des touches noires et jaunes, est mis en vente par des dizaines de bénévoles, avec des prix allant d'une centaine d'euros à plus de 500.

  L'Éthiopien Tamirat Tola a été sacré pour l’Éthiopie sur le marathon alors que la légende kenyane Kipchoge a abandonné très vite ses espoirs de triplé.

  L’Ethiopien Tamirat Tola s’est montré implacable pour remporter le marathon des Jeux de Paris samedi sur un parcours atypique et vallonné que n’a pas terminé la légende de la course, le Kényan Eliud Kipchoge, dont les espoirs de troisième titre olympique se sont rapidement envolés.

  Kipchoge n’aura pas atteint le décor prestigieux de l’Esplanade des Invalides, théâtre doré de la ligne d’arrivée du marathon olympique, un aller-retour entre Paris et Versailles rendu piège par un inhabituel enchaînement de montées et de descentes en plein cœur du parcours.

  Distancé après à peine plus d’un tiers de course, le Kényan de 39 ans a ensuite sombré et abandonné après le 30e kilomètre. À ce point de passage, il accusait près de 8 min 30 sec de retard sur la tête de course.

  Acclamé par le public parisien au moment de son abandon, le double champion olympique 2016 et 2021 et ex-recordman du monde leur a donné son dossard, ses chaussures et ses chaussettes, avant de monter dans la voiture-balai, a constaté un journaliste de l’AFP.

  « Je l’ai dépassé au 21e kilomètre, j’étais assez étonné de le voir déjà  en difficultés », témoigne le Français Félix Bour, finalement 50e, à plus de sept minutes de Tola (2h13 : 46.).

  « Des coureurs qui marchaient dans la côte » 

  « C’est dur de le voir dans la difficulté, on n’a pas l’habitude. Ça fait bizarre de le doubler, on n’ose presque pas, on ne sait pas s’il faut l’encourager, c’est presque déstabilisant, renchérit Nicolas Navarro, le Tricolore le mieux classé du jour, 16e en 2h 09 min 56 sec. Malheureusement, une carrière, ce n’est pas interminable. »

  Dôme doré des Invalides dans le dos, Tola, qui fête ses 33 ans dimanche, s’est lui imposé en 2h 06 min 26 sec, nouveau record olympique, un exploit sur un parcours si exigeant, devant le Belge Bashir Abdi, à 21 sec, et le Kényan Benson Kipruto, à 34 sec.

  Hypersolide d’un bout à l’autre de la course, Tola en a pris la tête autour du 20e kilomètre et a prouvé qu’il avait de bonnes jambes sur ce marathon vallonné avec 436 m de dénivelé positif et 438 de dénivelé négatif, presque entièrement placés entre les 15e et 30e kilomètres. Son attaque dans la côte du Pavé des Gardes, quand la route s’est brutalement relevée pour la seconde fois du parcours, a été décisive.

  L’enchaînement des montées et descentes sur ce Paris-Versailles-Paris a forcément pesé sur les jambes de ces coureurs, pour la plupart habitués à chasser le chronomètre sur des parcours hyper plats.

  Quatrième Ethiopien en or 

  « Le public était vraiment fou, j’ai les oreilles qui sifflent encore, on a pris beaucoup de plaisir même si le parcours était vraiment très difficile. Il y avait même des coureurs qui marchaient dans la côte », raconte Bour.

  Tamirat Tola devient le quatrième Éthiopien champion olympique du marathon masculin après le pionnier Abebe Bikila (1960 et 1964), Mamo Wolde (1968) et Gezahegne Abera (2000).

  Tola avait intégré l’équipe éthiopienne sur le tard en remplacement de Sisay Lemma, forfait.

  Déjà médaillé olympique sur la piste, en bronze sur 10.000 m à Rio en 2016, il avait aussi décroché des médailles aux Mondiaux sur marathon, l’argent en 2017 à Londres et l’or en 2022 à Eugene (États-Unis).

  L’Éthiopien avait abandonné à Londres en avril et, quelques mois avant son succès dans le prestigieux marathon de New York (2023), aux Mondiaux de Budapest en 2023. Il possède un record en 2 h 03 min 39, établi à Rotterdam en 2021.

  Autre légende de la course, Kenenisa Bekele a été lâché assez tôt, quand le relief a pris forme, et a finalement terminé 39e en 2 h 12 min 24 sec, à près de 6 minutes de son compatriote vainqueur.

  Ukrainian troops now up to 30km inside Russia, Moscow says

  Ukrainian troops have advanced up to 30km inside Russia, in what has become the deepest and most significant incursion since Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

  Russia's defence ministry said its forces had engaged Ukrainian troops near the villages of Tolpino and Obshchy Kolodez, as the offensive in the Kursk region entered a sixth day.

  Foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Kyiv of "intimidating the peaceful population of Russia".

  President Volodymyr Zelensky, who directly acknowledged the attack for the first time in an address last night, said 2,000 cross-border attacks had been launched by Russia from Kursk this summer.

  "Artillery, mortars, drones. We also record missile strikes, and each such strike deserves a fair response," Mr Zelensky told the country in his nightly address from Kyiv.

  A senior Ukrainian official told the AFP news agency that thousands of troops were engaged in the operation, far more than the small incursion initially reported by Russian border guards.

  While Ukrainian-backed sabotage groups have launched intermittent cross-border incursions, the Kursk offensive marks the biggest co-ordinated attack on Russian territory by Kyiv's conventional forces.

  “We are on the offensive. The aim is to stretch the positions of the enemy, to inflict maximum losses and to destabilise the situation in Russia as they are unable to protect their own border,” the official said.

  Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday that its forces had "foiled attempts by enemy mobile groups with armoured vehicles to break through deep into Russian territory".

  But in an apparent admission that Kyiv's forces have now advanced deep into the Kursk border region, the defence ministry reported engaging Ukrainian troops near the villages of Tolpino and Obshchy Kolodez - which are about 25km and 30km from the Russia-Ukraine border.

  Footage circulating online and verified by the BBC also appeared to show a Russian strike near the village of Levshinka, around 25km from the border.

  Ukrainian troops have claimed to have captured a number of settlements in the Kursk region. In Guevo, a village about 3km inside Russia, soldiers filmed themselves removing the Russian flag from an administrative building.

  Clips have also emerged of Ukrainian troops seizing administrative buildings in Sverdlikovo and Poroz, while intense fighting has been reported in Sudzha - a town of about 5,000 people.

  Ukrainian troops have already filmed themselves outside Sudzha at a major gas facility involved in the transit of natural gas from Russia to the EU via Ukraine, which has continued despite the war.

  In Sumy region, which borders the Kursk region, BBC reporters witnessed a steady stream of armoured personnel carriers and tanks moving towards Russia.

  The armoured convoys are sporting white triangular insignias, seemingly to distinguish them from hardware used within Ukraine itself. Meanwhile, aerial photos have appeared to show Ukrainian tanks engaged in combat inside Russia.

  Photos analysed by BBC Verify also appeared to show Russia constructing new defensive lines near the Kursk nuclear power plant. Ukrainian forces engaged at Obshchy Kolodez were within 50km (31 miles) of the facility.

  Contrasting satellite imagery of the same location captured yesterday with imagery from a few days earlier, images show several newly constructed trench lines in the vicinity, with the nearest roughly 8km (5 miles) from the plant.

  Russia says 76,000 people have been evacuated from border areas in the Kursk region, where a state of emergency has been declared by local authorities.

  Acting regional governor Aleksei Smirnov also said 15 people were injured late on Saturday when the wreckage of a downed Ukrainian missile fell on a multi-storey building in Kursk's regional capital, Kursk.

  Oleksiy Goncharenko - a Ukrainian MP - hailed the operation and said it was "taking us much closer to peace than one hundred peace summits".

  "When Russia needs to fight back on their own territory, when Russian people are running, when people care, that's the only way to show them stop this war," he told the BBC.

  The Kursk offensive comes after weeks of Russian advances in the east, where a succession of villages have been captured by the Kremlin's forces.

  Some analysts have suggested that the Kursk attack is part of an effort to force Russia to redeploy forces away from eastern Ukraine and relieve pressure on the beleaguered Ukrainian defences.

  But the Ukrainian official told AFP there had been little let-up to date in Russian operations in the east.

  Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the offensive was a "major provocation".

  Meanwhile, emergency services in the Kyiv region said a man and his four-year-old son were killed in a missile strike near the capital overnight.

  Air defences also destroyed 53 out of 57 attack drones launched by Russia during its overnight airstrikes, air force officials said. Four North Korean-manufactured missiles were also fired as part of the barrage, they said.

  Russia has been forced to turn to the isolated Asian state to re-stock its munitions, with the US alleging that vast amounts of military hardware have been shipped by Pyongyang.

  Elsewhere, Russian officials in the occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast said a fire broke out at the region's nuclear power plant on Sunday.

  Yevgeny Balitsky, the Kremlin-installed governor of Zaporizhzhia, claimed the fire erupted after shelling by Ukrainian forces. He said there had been no radiation spike around the plant.

  Russia's state Tass news agency reported that the main fire at the plant was extinguished in the early hours of Monday.

  In a statement posted to X, the UN's nuclear watchdog - the International Atomic Energy Agency - said its on-site inspectors had witnessed "strong dark smoke" coming from the north of the facility, but emphasised that there was "no impact reported" for nuclear safety.

  President Zelensky said in a post to social media that Russian forces had started a fire on the territory of the plant.

  The site has been under the control of Russian troops and officials since 2022. It has not produced power in more than two years and all six reactors have been in cold shutdown since April.

  JO 2024: les dernières informations autour du Marathon pour tous

  

  Samedi soir, une grande première aura lieu dans les rues de Paris, et plus globalement en Ile de France, avec le "Marathon pour tous" entre l'Hôtel de ville et les Invalides. Pour cette séquence, deux courses sont au programme (un marathon et une course de 10km) et 40.048 dossards ont été distribués.

  Côté sécurité le dispositif mis en place par Paris 2024 et la préfecture de Police de Paris est le même que pour les deux autres marathons olympiques qui se tiendront samedi matin et dimanche matin. C'est à dire qu'un barrierage permanent sera assuré tout au long du parcours. Et lors des arrivées aux Invalides , les participants ne pourront pas passer la ligne avec leurs enfants (ou un membre de la famille) pour célébrer la fin de l'aventure.

  Le dispositif mis en place est le copié/collé des professionnels. Les équipes de Paris 2024 font face à un défi logistique impressionnant car le parcours du marathon devra être nettoyé pour dimanche matin avant le départ du marathon olympique, qui dispose par exemple de sponsors différents. Les services de police effectueront par exemple le parcours entier entre la fin du marathon pour tous et le marathon olympique pour le sécuriser.

  Des participants de 16 à 94 ans

  Avec des coureurs inexpérimentés, des postes médicaux seront installés tous les 7kms du parcours. Un système de marathon connecté, pour les personnes qui n'ont pas eu de dossard, est aussi mis en place. 127 pays seront représentés alors que plus de 400.000 demandes ont été enregistrées. Sur le 10 kilomètres, le plus jeune coureur a 16 ans et le plus âgé a 94 ans, avec une moyenne d'âge de 39 ans. Sur le marathon, le plus jeune aura 20 ans et le plus âgé 85 ans, pour une moyenne d'âge de 41 ans.

  Aucun classement ne sera réalisé à la fin de la course, les inscrits recevront uniquement leurs temps. Les coureurs doivent terminer le parcours avant 4h30 du matin aux Invalides. Le dernier temps de passage, en bas de la Tour Eiffel, devra être validé à 3h53 du matin. Aucune diffusion en live du marathon n'est prévue, ce soir-là de nombreuses finales sont programmées.
